Donald Trump surprised everyone at the Republican National Convention last night.
I'm Elizabeth Mitchell, and this is the Daily Signal Top News for Tuesday, July 16th.
It's day two of the Republican National Convention.
Virginia Allen is on the ground in Milwaukee with the Daily Signal team, and she joins us now.
Virginia, Trump made a surprise appearance at the RNC last night, correct?
Yes, Elizabeth, that's right.
It has been a very exciting two days, keeping off the RNC,
And former president Donald Trump, he entered with a bandage on his ear last night.
We weren't sure if he was going to be there on day one, but he made this really big entrance.
And I think the crowd was just really overwhelmed to see him and to see him walk in after that assassination attempt on his life on Saturday with his ear covered.
He walked up and kind of took his seat in the box as the crowd was cheering.
And on one side of him was Tucker Carlson and Congressman Byron Donald's.
And on the other side was his choice for vice president, Senator J.D. Vance, as well as House Speaker Mike Johnson.
And like I said, the crowd was really energetic. This is what they sounded like.
And I don't know that I've ever seen Trump look as sober and as emotional as he really did last night entering.
But it was very evident that he was pretty overwhelmed by the amount of support that he felt from the crowd here at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.
Wow, that's amazing to hear.
And you're two days into the convention with two more days to go.
So who has the Daily Signal been talking to on the ground of the convention?
Oh, my gosh.
We have had so many great conversations with lawmakers and various conservative voices here on the ground.
I was really, really honored and privileged to get to have a conversation yesterday with Tucker Carlson talking about the implications of that assassination attempt on Trump, what that means for the election.
In Carlson's words, that essentially won the election for Trump, in his opinion.
We also discuss why J.D. Vance is the right choice.
And Tucker was very affirmative of that choice.
But we have had a number of individuals so far that we have sat down with,
from Congressman Logels to Dean Kane today, to Von Gino, to Brett Bondell.
So we're just really, really excited for the conversations that are continuing right here
from the Daily Signal booth in Panther Arena in Milwaukee
during the Republican National Convention.
Wow, I know we're all really excited to hear those interviews once they're ready.
Well, we are excited to be bringing them to you.
And thanks, Elizabeth, for all of your coverage of so many great speeches
that are happening throughout this time at the Republican National Convention.
And for anyone that's not following the Daily Signal on social media or at our website,
I'm going to go ahead and put that plug in again because we have a live stream running on YouTube
but throughout the event, throughout this week, it runs through Thursday.
We have so many great summaries of speeches that are from the main stage.
And of course, so many great interviews, both coming out on the day with the digital podcast,
but also a lot of content that's only going to be on our social media.
So make sure you are subscribed.
So you can catch all of the insider information.
And I'm really excited to talk to you tomorrow about with more updates.
Thanks so much, Elizabeth.
After a judge found the appointment of the prosecutor in the Trump classified documents case to be unconstitutional,
Jack Smith's other Trump case will likely fail.
On Monday, Judge Eileen Cannon, a federal judge in Florida, found Smith's appointment unconstitutional
because he was not appointed by the president or confirmed by the Senate.
Attorney General Merrick Garland chose Smith, a private citizen, to prosecute the former president.
Smith's office has said it will appeal Cannon's ruling.
Smith could appeal to the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals,
which almost guarantees Supreme Court review, is in the cards for Smith.
The classified documents case was considered to be the stronger one against Trump.
It's now unlikely the other charges against Trump, brought by Smith in Washington, D.C., will stand.
In it, Trump was indicted on four counts of alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election.
The Secret Service is under investigation for its failure to stop the former president from being shot at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on Saturday night.
The agency is being questioned on how it handled warnings from crowd members of a suspicious person outside the rally.
An agency spokesman confirmed that local police officers warned agents about the suspicious person before Trump came on stage.
According to the director of the Secret Service, local police were inside the warehouse.
building where the shooter was on the roof when he fired at the rally. The former president was
wounded in the ear and narrowly missed being fatally shot in the head when a would-be assassin
shot him at about 6.10 p.m. Saturday in Butler, Pennsylvania, about 33 miles north of Pittsburgh.
Trump told the New York Post, doctors said he should be dead. The investigation on the 20-year-old
would-be assassin who was killed by secret service snipers after shooting the former president
continues. The FBI has access to his phone and have been looking through his text and emails,
though they have not yet uncovered a motive or if he had connections to others.
The GOP officially adopted a new party platform at the Republican National Convention yesterday.
The platform included a softened position on abortion, leaving the issue up to the states.
The platform says,
We proudly stand for families in life. We believe that the 14th Amendment to the Constitution of the United
states guarantees that no person can be denied life or liberty without due process.
The states are, therefore, free to pass laws protecting those rights.
After 51 years, the platform continues, because of us, that power has been given to the states
and to a vote of the people. We will oppose late-term abortion while supporting mothers and policies
that advance prenatal care, access to birth control, and IVF fertility treatments.
The GOP removed the 2016 platform's reference to marriage as between a man and a woman,
instead saying Republicans will promote a culture that values the sanctity of marriage,
the blessings of childhood, the foundational role of families, and supports working parents.
The platform passed with overwhelming support on a voice vote,
but not without an audible collection of notes, Politico reported.
Seven states are fighting a new rule that could force doctors into performing gender transition proceedings.
procedures. Missouri, Utah, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, Idaho, and Arkansas all filed a lawsuit
against the Department of Health and Human Services in response to the rule change. The change to the
non-discrimination provision of the Affordable Care Act, adopted by the Department of Health and Human
Services, would prohibit medical professionals from turning away patients seeking gender
transition procedures. The Hill reports that the changes expand the rules definition of sex discrimination
to include discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
As a result, despite personal beliefs, religious conviction, or political values,
it would become an active discrimination for a doctor to refuse someone
the medical interventions they ask for to change their gender.
Doctors who refuse could lose access to federally funded programs,
like Medicare, Medicaid, and the Children's Health Insurance Program.
