Starting point is 00:00:25 We'd love to talk, business. America has a new president. Donald Trump took the oath of office today to become the 47th president of the United States. I'm Virginia Allen and this is the Daily Signal Top News in 10 for Monday, January 20th. The golden age of America begins right now. President Donald Trump delivered those words from the U.S. Capitol today moments after being sworn in as the 47th president of the United States. Trump gave remarks to the American people that included a brief summary of the U.S. capital of the United States. Trump gave remarks to the American people that included a brief summary of, his policy priorities. Our sovereignty will be reclaimed. Our safety will be restored. The scales of justice will be rebalanced.
Starting point is 00:01:23 The vicious, violent, and unfair weaponization of the Justice Department and our government will end. Former President Joe Biden and former Vice President Kamala Harris sat behind Trump as he stood at the podium and delivered his inaugural address. Former President's Barack Obama, George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton were also in the audience. With the former president sitting behind Trump, Trump said that America's decline is over. My recent election is a mandate to completely and totally reverse a horrible betrayal and all of these many betrayals that have taken place and to give the people back their faith, their wealth, their democracy,
Starting point is 00:02:07 and indeed their freedom. From this moment on, America's decline is over. Trump pledged that his legacy will be one of a peacemaker and unifier. Today's inauguration was the 60th U.S. presidential inauguration, and it was unique in that it was held inside the U.S. Capitol instead of outside because of the cold weather. Usually, Americans are invited to watch the inauguration on the national. National Mall, but instead they were invited to view that inauguration from the Capital One Arena here in Washington, D.C. The arena only holds just over 20,000 people, so there were a lot of
Starting point is 00:02:55 Trump supporters who couldn't fit inside that arena, so they celebrated the inauguration on the streets of Washington, D.C., even staying warm by doing the YMCA dance outside that packed arena. The Daily Signal's Elizabeth Mitchell was outside. the Capital One arena today talking to Trump supporters. Hey, Elizabeth. Thanks, Virginia. Were you doing that YMCA dance out there as well? It was hard not to dance hearing that song.
Starting point is 00:03:27 The energy in the air was extremely high. Trump supporters just stopped what they were doing. Tons of them in the streets, doing the Trump dance, doing the YMCA dance. It was just a very joyful scene. The crowd is all wearing pro-Trump gear and a lot of patriotic, pro-America, flag type of gear. and it was clear that these people who've come from all over the country braving very cold, windy temperatures, are feeling like this is a great day to be an American. You spoke with many of the folks that were outside, that were waiting in line, hoping to even maybe get a glimpse of Trump as he drove by in the motorcade. What did you hear from the folks that you spoke to?
Starting point is 00:04:07 People are so excited, like you said, they were willing to wait in line just to see the motorcade. That's how excited they are. People waited for Capital One Arena to get in, starting for like eight. hours they were in that line. And some of them didn't even get in. Out in the cold, the temperatures really are a big factor. So the biggest thing I was hearing from these people was that they're really excited about Trump securing the border and making America safe again. That was across the board with something I was asking people was, what do you hope to see President Trump do differently and what do you want to see on day one and close the border, secure our nation's border was really the
Starting point is 00:04:39 biggest thing I was hearing. Wow. Well, we're going to talk a little bit more about that and those executive actions that Trump is laying out here just in a moment. But inside the Capital One arena, our colleague Rob Bluey, the president and executive editor of The Daily Signal, he was speaking to folks who had made it inside that Capital One arena. And he spoke to one gentleman named Terrence, who said he was a Trump supporter now, but that wasn't always the case. What makes you a Trump supporter? I've always liked Trump since I was young. I'm 41 years old, so I've known Trump in his heydays when everybody liked him before all the politics. and everything, and he took it into the White House.
Starting point is 00:05:16 Originally, I didn't vote for Trump in 2016 because I didn't think he was taking it seriously. I thought it was just something to do. But after I found out he was serious, I worked for Trump in his real election campaign, and I've been a trumps to every since. Well, you are quite popular, canter around that belt. Yeah, man, I'm trying. I just want to show people that we're talking about, the people's champ, you know what I'm saying? I want to respect the president.
Starting point is 00:05:39 Thank you. And the vice president, you know what I'm saying? They're the people's champs now, man. And I just wanted them know that, you know, us as the American citizens, we appreciate y'all. Well, Terrence, thanks so much for speaking to The Daily Signal. Well, Elizabeth, thanks for braving the cold and being out there and for all of your reporting today. Thank you. And for all of our listeners who want to get even more coverage of the inauguration tonight,
Starting point is 00:06:00 make sure to check out Tony Kennett's show right here at The Daily Signal. Well, shortly after taking the oath of office, Trump started implementing his America First agenda. The president has begun signing a slew of executive orders today that apply to everything from the border to ending DEI programs. He has and is still signing these orders, potentially even as we speak right now, at three different locations across Washington, D.C. First, he signed some of those orders at the U.S. Capitol right after being sworn in, and then he's slated to sign more on stage in front of the crowd at Capitol One Arena, and finally he will sign more at the White House this evening. evening. First, let's look at some of these orders that specifically pertain to what Elizabeth
Starting point is 00:06:48 just mentioned a moment ago, border and immigration. Trump will sign 10 border-related executive orders today. The first being a declaration of the border as a national emergency. This emergency declaration unlocks access to additional resources like National Guard troops to help secure the border. Trump also was expected to sign executive orders to end catch and release, reinstate the remaining Mexico policy and continue building the wall along America's southern border with Mexico. He's also expected to sign an order that designates the criminal cartels as global terrorists. In addition to border-related orders, Trump is signing executive orders today, mandating that the federal government recognize two sexes, male and female only.
Starting point is 00:07:37 Other orders relate to energy policy, like putting an end to the Green New Deal and the termination of the electric vehicle mandate and be getting more oil and gas drilling in Alaska. Trump is also signing an executive order on remote work policies for some government agencies that requires federal employees to return to in-person work for four to five days a week. But it is up to Congress to actually pass bills that will cement Trump's agenda into federal law.
Starting point is 00:08:06 House Speaker Mike Johnson was beside Trump as he signed some of these executive orders today. Johnson put out a statement pledging that House Republicans will work closely with President Trump to deliver the America First Agenda, adding we are focused on economic policies that return jobs to American workers, lower inflation, cut taxes, and revive our manufacturing sector. You can read more about the specifics of Trump's executive orders by following the links in today's show notes. We'll be right back with today's newsflash right after this. First up in our news flash for the day, before Trump was sworn in this morning, Biden issued one final slew of presidential pardons, including a pardon for Dr. Anthony Fauci, retired general Mark Millie, and members of the House Committee that investigated January 6th. Biden said that the issuance of these pardons should not be mistaken as an acknowledgement that any individual engaged in any wrongdoing, nor should acceptance be misconstrued as an admission.
Starting point is 00:09:10 of guilt for any offense. Biden also pardoned some of his family members during his last hour in office, including his brother, James Biden, who congressional investigators said misled Congress during an investigation into allegations that the Biden family participated in influence peddling. Well, Trump has said multiple times that there would be held to pay if the hostages being held in Gaza were not released before he was sworn into office. Well, just 24 hours before he was sworn. He was sworn in, three female hostages were released from Gaza. They include 24-year-old Romigonan, 31-year-old, Doran Scheinbecker, and 28-year-old Emily Damari. These are the first hostages to have been released or freed in months. Another four hostages are expected to be released this weekend and another
