I'm John Pop.
And I'm Kate Trinko.
And this is the Daily Signal Top News for Tuesday, August 15th.
Here are today's headlines.
Former President Donald Trump has been an indicted again.
This indictment came from a Georgia grand jury late Monday night and included 18 other defendants.
Among those indicted were former attorney Rudy Giuliani and White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows.
Fulton County District Attorney Fannie Willis, who launched the investigation, says she wants to try all of the
defendants. This is the fourth Trump indictment. In this case, charges revolve around the
Racketeer-influenced and corrupt Organizations Act, or RICO. RICO is typically used in cases
to prosecute organized crime. This case claims that Trump and his indicted allies attempted to
put pressure on state election workers to find fraudulent votes and change the results of the
presidential election in Georgia. Trump commented on the case through the social media platform
true social. So the witch hunt continues, he said. Nineteen people indicted tonight, including the former
president of the United States, me, by an out of control and very corrupt district attorney who
campaigned and raised money on, I will get Trump. Trump now faces 91 charges from his four indictments.
A federal appeals court ruled on Tuesday that the District of Columbia unevenly enforced its so-called
defacement ordinances against anti-abortion groups and that the city treated pro-life protesters
more harshly than Black Lives Matter activists, reported Fox News.
This reverses a lower court's dismissal of a complaint filed by the Frederick Douglas Foundation.
The Frederick Douglass Foundation and Students for Life of America filed the lawsuit against Washington,
D.C., after two pro-life activists were arrested on August 1, 2020,
for writing on the sidewalk with chalk black pre-born lives matter near a planned
parenthood. The court's decision read,
in the summer of 2020, thousands of protesters flooded the streets of the district to proclaim
Black Lives Matter. Over several weeks, the protesters covered streets, sidewalks, and storefronts
with paint and chalk. The markings were ubiquitous in an open violation of the district's
defacement ordinance, yet none of the protesters were arrested. The decision of the appeals court
said that the government may not enforce the laws in a manner that picks winners and losers in public
debates. It further said that an uneven enforcement of the law would undermine the First Amendment's
protection of free speech if the government can discriminate against disfavored viewpoints under the
cover of press-a-cuitarial discretion. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer announced on Tuesday that he
supports a short-term bill to fund the government until December, according to the Hill. In a conference
call with reporters, the Democrats said he spoke with Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy about the
matter, and they agreed that the short-term bill would be needed to prevent a government shutdown.
I thought it was a good thing that he recognized that we need a continuing resolution in September.
I'm supportive of that, Schumer said.
He continued a continuing resolution until early December provides time for consideration of these bipartisan
bills.
We urge our House colleagues to emulate the Senate.
The only way we're going to avoid a government shutdown is by bipartisan support in both houses.
You cannot keep the government open if you just want to do it with one party.
We hope that House Republicans will realize that any funding resolution has to be bipartisan
or they were risk shutting down the government.
Representative Chip Roy, a Republican, blasted the potential budget deal.
Under no circumstances will I support a continuing resolution to fund the government
at bloated, corrupt 2023 levels.
This is especially true if it were to stupidly expire in December, according to Roy.
President Joe Biden says he will be visiting Hawaii soon.
His remarks come after he has been criticized for not commenting about the wildfires.
Justin Sink of Bloomberg tweeted Sunday,
after a couple of hours on the Roebuth Beach,
President Biden was asked about the rising death toll in Hawaii.
No comment, he said, before heading home.
Biden also announced that he would be giving new funds to those affected by the fires via breaking 9-1-1.
We've also authorized one-time payments of $700 per household.
The folks have been displaced so they can do the immediate things of just taking care of medications and prescription that they so badly need.
We'll continue to keep you updated on this story.
And that's going to do it for today's episode.
