Starting point is 00:00:25 We'd love to talk, business. President-elect Donald Trump held a press conference today and caused quite a stir with numerous remarks. I'm Virginia Allen, and this is the Daily Signal's Top News in 10 for Tuesday, January 7th. President-elect Donald Trump held a press conference from Mar-a-Lago today. The press conference lasted for about an hour, and Trump discussed everything from the hostages in Israel to the war in Ukraine to America's economic relationship with Canada. Trump began by announcing a major investment from a Middle East company to build new data centers across the United States. I'm thrilled to announce today that the MAC will be investing at least $20 billion over a very
Starting point is 00:01:17 short period of time into the United States, and they may go double or even somewhat more than double that amount of money. It's a great thing. The president-elect went on to discuss a host of issues and some of Trump's comments have caused a bit of a stir. The president-elect said under his administration, he will rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. Trump mentioned his interest in Greenland and a reporter asked him if he could assure the world that as he tries to get control of Greenland and the Panama Canal, he won't use military or economic coercion. To this, Trump said no. He could not give that assurance. Trump ended the press conference restating that there will be held to pay in the Middle East if the hostages being held
Starting point is 00:02:06 in Gaza are not released by the time he takes office in less than two weeks. We want to get back those hostages for Israel and for us. You know, we do have people that are hostages being held. And I'll just say it again. If this deal's not done with the people representing our nation, by the time I get to office, all hell is going to break out. Thank you very much. And in some other Trump-related news today, Trump also had a legal win today. The judge who has overseeing the classified document case against Trump has temporarily blocked the release of a report on that case. Special counsel Jack Smith led that investigation into Trump that accused the president-elect of holding on to classified documents and seeking to interfere with the results of
Starting point is 00:02:52 the 2020 election. Jack Smith wrote a report of his findings and he was planning on releasing that report. But Trump's legal team asked that the report not be released. And now U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon has temporarily blocked the Justice Department from releasing that report. Social media users, big news out of meta today. Meta is the overarching company that runs both Facebook and Instagram. Mark Zuckerberg announced in a video message today that Facebook is making some big changes in order to get back to the company's roots of embracing free speech. We've reached a point where it's just too many mistakes and too much censorship. The recent elections also feel like a cultural tipping point
Starting point is 00:03:40 towards once again prioritizing speech. So we're going to get back to our roots and focus on reducing mistakes, simplifying our policies, and restoring free expression on our platforms. Zuckerberg goes on in that video to explain how Facebook is going to go about returning to being a platform that allows for greater freedom
Starting point is 00:04:00 of expression of viewpoints. The platform is going to end the third-party fact-checking program and move to a community notes model. This will first start in the United States. Facebook is also going to change its content policies to remove some restrictions and allow more room for debate and discussion on topics like immigration or gender issues.
Starting point is 00:04:22 Plus, Zuckerberg says that Facebook is going to simplify its systems to reduce over-enforcement and cut down on mistakes by focusing on enforcement on illegal and high-severity violations like terrorism, drugs and fraud and scams. And finally, the platform is going to start phasing civic content back in with a more personalized approach and control so that people that want to see more political content in their feeds can do so. The House of Representatives passed the Lake and Riley Act today. The bill prioritizes the arrest of some criminal illegal aliens. It's named after the Georgia nursing student Lake and Riley who was murdered by an illegal alien last year.
Starting point is 00:05:11 Specifically, the bill requires immigration and customs enforcement to arrest and detain illegal aliens who commit theft offenses. The bill also gives states the authority to sue federal officials who refuse to enforce immigration law. The bill passed with bipartisan support today. Every Republican and 48 Democrats voted in support of the legislation. Georgia GOP Congressman Mike Collins wrote the bill, and before the vote today, he read a statement, on the House floor from Lake and Riley's family endorsing the legislation. I want to leave you with an excerpt from a statement from the Lake and Riley family. The Lake and Riley Act has our full support because it would help save innocent lives
Starting point is 00:05:57 and prevent more families from going through the kind of heartbreak we've experienced. Get you and your crew to the big shows with Go Transit. There is no greater gift that could be given to her or our country than to continue her legacy by, saving lives through this bill. The vote on this bill was the first vote on a federal piece of legislation in the 119th Congress. And for brand new lawmakers, this was the first federal piece of legislation that they voted on as a sitting member of Congress.
Starting point is 00:07:01 Representative Addison McDowell is a freshman from North Carolina, and he voted in support of the Lake and Riley Act today. He told the Daily Signal that the bill is an important step in making sure something like this, meaning the murder of Lake and Riley at the hands of an illegal alien never happens again. The bill now moves to the Senate and it is expected to pass in the Senate since Republicans now control the Senate. We already know that the bill is going to receive at least one Democrat vote in the Senate because according to Punchable News, Pennsylvania Democrat Senator John Federman is joining Republicans to co-sponsor the Lake and Riley Act. And of course, Trump is expected to sign the bill into law after he swore into office
Starting point is 00:07:42 on January 20th. Now let's hit our news flash of the day. As Trump was discussing his interest in Greenland at a press conference today, his son, Don Jr. was in Greenland. Rorters reports that the visit is a private one and notes that the visit was only supposed to last about four or five hours. John Jr. did not have any known public meeting scheduled with officials while he was in Greenland today.
Starting point is 00:08:11 Finally today, the snow, much of the Atlantic and the Midwest. have been hit by winter storms this week, and tragically six people have reportedly been killed by that winter storm. Now, there is another storm that's headed for parts of northern Texas, southeast Oklahoma, Arkansas, and northern Louisiana, including Dallas-Fort Worth, Little Rock, and Treveport. That's according to the National Weather Service. So stay safe out there and hope for all the kids that they have some fun in the snow. Your government is out of control. It's doing things it has no business doing.
Starting point is 00:08:45 It spends way too much money. It gets involved in way too many wars. It not only tells you what you can and can't say, it actively censors you. And the things your government should do, it can't, or worse, won't, do it all. It can't keep your streets clean of crime and filth. It can't keep your neighborhoods safe enough for kids to play outside. It can't even prevent your country from being invaded by millions of illegal immigrants. Why is that?
Starting point is 00:09:09 Because your leaders no longer represent you. They represent themselves. elves and their friends.
