Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani can no longer practice law in the state of New York.
I'm Virginia Allen, and this is the Daily Signal Top News for Tuesday, July 2.
Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani has been disbarred effective immediately in the state of New York.
A panel of judges in New York's appellate division wrote Tuesday that Giuliani flagrantly misused his position working for President Donald Trump to make false statements.
to the public in regard to the 2020 election.
That's according to reporting from the Hill.
In a 31-page ruling, they wrote,
Giuliani not only deliberately violated some of the most fundamental tenets of the legal profession,
but he also actively contributed to the national strife that has followed the 2020 presidential election,
for which he is entirely unrepentant.
The court demanded that Giuliani desist and refrain from practicing.
law. The Hill also reports that according to a political advisor to Giuliani, Ted Goodman,
the former New York mayor does intend to appeal the decision. Goodman said, members of the legal
community who respect the rule of law in this country should immediately come forward and speak out
against this politically and ideologically corrupted decision. We will be appealing this objectively
flawed decision in hopes that the appellate process will restore integrity to
our system of justice.
Giuliani also spoke about the decision on X, and he said, I'm not surprised that I've been
disbarred by a bar association, which is a politically and ideologically integral part of the
Democrat one-party corrupted court system for a long time.
Giuliani added the judges in New York City are selected by local Democrat bosses and compare the
judges to the ones in a one-party communist dictatorship.
that are not really elected at all.
Texas Democrat Representative Lloyd Dodget is calling on President Joe Biden to drop out of the 2024 presidential race.
This comes from a report from the Daily Signal's Fred Lucas,
and Dodget is the first elected Democrat to call for Biden to step aside following Thursday night's debate.
Meanwhile, other Democrat leaders, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffreys,
even former President Barack Obama are continuing to back Biden. But we have seen even among
liberal pundits that Thursday night's debate has been called a disaster, and some of those
pundits are floating whether or not Biden should stay in the race. Polling after the presidential
debate shows that Biden's Republican opponent, former President Donald Trump, has gained a decisive
lead. Biden has reportedly not called congressional Democrats since that Thursday night debate
that many are describing as a disaster.
Dodget made a historic comparison
to President Lyndon B. Johnson,
who withdrew from the presidential race
in March of 1968 amid deep unpopularity.
Dodget said,
I represent the heart of a congressional district
once represented by Lyndon Johnson.
Under very different circumstances,
he made the painful decision to withdraw.
President Biden should do the same,
according to Dodget.
The president and his family,
seemed determined to remain in the contest, however.
First Lady Jill Biden told Vogue that they will not let those 90 minutes define the four years he's been president.
We will continue the fight, according to Jill Biden. Stay tuned.
Trump has requested his sentencing in his business fraud conviction out of New York City to be delayed.
And now it has.
Today, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg told Judge Wanmarshan that he doesn't oppose
former President Donald Trump's request to delay his sentencing.
Trump was originally scheduled to have that sentencing on July 11th, days before the Republican
National Convention.
But now, Judge Mershahn has moved the sentencing to September 18th.
So why push for the delayed sentencing?
Because of the Supreme Court's ruling on Monday.
Trump's legal team moved to overturn the conviction on Monday following that Supreme
Court ruling in the case Trump versus the United States.
States. The Supreme Court ruled that a former president is presumptively immune from prosecution
for any official duties of the president of the United States, but he may be prosecuted for
unofficial acts. Well, this relates to other cases that Trump is involved in as well. Special
prosecutor Jack Smith has alleged that Trump conspired to overturn the 2020 presidential election
by speaking knowingly false claims of election fraud. But Trump's legal team argued that the
allegations made by Smith fell under the outer perimeter of Trump's official duties as president,
and he was therefore immune from prosecution. So the charges, according to Trump's team,
should be dismissed. Back to the case in Manhattan, Trump is asking Judge Mershon to weigh those
same arguments that the Supreme Court's immunity ruling invalidates in his hush money conviction.
That's according to the Wall Street Journal. Trump's lawyers have argued that.
that the conviction on those 34 counts in the alleged hush money scheme be thrown out,
given the Supreme Court's ruling, that presidents have immunity from acts while in office.
The Manhattan court prosecutors said that they believe Trump's case is meritless,
but as we just discussed, they have agreed to move that sentencing.
Trump's lawyers argued that under the court's ruling, prosecutors would have been prohibited
from presenting evidence, including social media posts from Trump's president,
and witness testimony about White House meetings.
Trump's lawyers said that these would be considered official acts under the ruling.
Well, with that, we're going to leave it there for today's edition of the Daily Signal Top News.
We will see you right back here tomorrow morning.
I am so pleased to be joined by Heritage Foundation National Security expert Victoria Coates.
