I'm Brian Gottstein, and this is the Daily Signal Top News for Wednesday, February 21st.
Here are today's headlines.
Former President Donald Trump confirmed a list of potential vice-presidential candidates for his 20-24 ticket.
The Republican presidential frontrunner spoke with Fox News host Laura Ingram on Tuesday
and confirmed his candidates were Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina,
entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, Florida Congressman,
Byron Donald's, South Dakota Governor Christie Gnome, and former Hawaii Representative Tulsi Gabbard,
who formerly served in Congress as a Democrat. Scott, Ramoswamy, and DeSantis all ran against Trump
in the Republican presidential primary. The former president said that all of those people are good.
They're all solid. He said that he was looking for someone who could help him from a voter standpoint
and who had common sense on important issues. Referring to Senator Scott, he said,
A lot of people are talking about that gentleman right over there, and he's been so great,
he's been such a great advocate.
According to the Hill, Trump did not confirm a timeline for when he'd announce his
vice presidential pick.
The Biden administration announced on Wednesday that it's canceling $1.2 billion in student loan
debt.
The loan nullification plan extends to about 153,000 people.
According to NBC News, one can qualify for loan forgiveness if it's a loan notification.
if he's enrolled in the administration's saving on a valuable education repayment plan.
According to a White House fact sheet, the plan extends to borrowers who've been in a repayment
for as little as 10 years and took out $12,000 or less in loans.
According to the Washington Times, education under Secretary James Caval said that
college is meant to lead to a better life, but too many students end up struggling due to their
student debt.
He said that the program will allow the administration,
to help struggling borrowers who are experiencing hardships.
However, Republicans in Congress offered some sharp criticism of the plan.
There's no such thing as student loan forgiveness, Republican Senator Tom Cotton said.
President Biden is simply transferring the debt to make you and your kids pay back student loans that you never took out.
Senator Marcia Blackburn of Tennessee blasted the process that Biden took to enact the student loan plan.
She said that the plan to cancel.
a $1.2 billion in debt is yet another move that circumvents a prior Supreme Court ruling
and harms American taxpayers.
New York State Attorney General, Letitia James, told ABC News on Tuesday that if former
President Donald Trump isn't able to come up with the cash to pay the penalty on his
civil fraud case, she'll seize his assets.
Judge Arthur Engaron ordered Trump to pay nearly $355 million plus a
approximately $100 million in pre-judgment interest on Friday in a case that James launched.
James said that if Trump doesn't have the funds to pay off the judgment, then she'll ask the judge
to seize his assets. She said that she'd consider seizing Trump's Wall Street skyscraper.
We're prepared to make sure that the judgment is paid to New Yorkers, and yes, I look at 40 Wall
Street each and every day, James said, referring to Trump's building. The former president said in his
interview with Laura Ingram that what's happening to him is a form of communism or fascism.
New York Mayor Eric Adams announced on Wednesday that he'd halt the drastic budget cuts and hiring
freezes that the city had planned for the next fiscal year. According to New York's ABC
station, he said it was because of better than expected economic performance in 2023. Adams also
said that the city would stop the budget cuts because it's going to reduce what it's spending on a
immigrants and asylum seekers who flooded the city.
ABC reported that the city would cut an additional 10% in spending on illegal immigrants,
and that's after a 20% reduction already announced during the preliminary budget.
We're far from out of the woods, but we're showing that we can manage the crisis
if we watch how we spend and how we manage the spending we're seeing in the city, Adam said.
And that'll do it for today's episode.
