Starting point is 00:00:25 We'd love to talk, business. A federal judge has blocked President Donald Trump's ability to enforce his executive order that limits birthright citizenship. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegeseth says America is fast-tracking drone production to grow our unmanned warfare capabilities. And President Trump is headed down to central Texas today to survey the damage that devastated so many communities there with flash floods. I'm Virginia Allen in for Tony Kennett. It's Friday, July 11th, and this is the Daily Signal's Top News in 10. A federal judge has blocked President Donald Trump's ability to enforce his executive order that limits birthright citizenship. The judge is Joseph Laplante of the U.S. District Court for the District of New Hampshire.
Starting point is 00:01:22 LaPante made use of an exception in order to overcome the Supreme Court's ruling last month that allows the Trump administration to move ahead with limiting birthright citizenship. Laplante said, his decision applies nationwide to babies who would have been subject to Trump's executive order. So let's just recap this whole case for a second. When Trump first took office, he signed an executive order aimed at preventing the babies born in the U.S. to parents of illegal aliens from automatically becoming U.S. citizens. The 14th Amendment declares that all persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof are citizens of
Starting point is 00:02:03 the United States and the state wherein they reside. Trump's executive order focuses on that phrase subject to the jurisdiction thereof. The president holds that those born to parents who are not in the U.S. legally are not subject to U.S. jurisdiction and are therefore not legal citizens. Of course, lawsuits were filed when Trump signed that executive order and the case rose all the way to the Supreme Court. Sort of. The Trump administration asked the Supreme Court to specifically consider the issue of nationwide injunctions in this case? In other words, can a court that is not the Supreme Court give a ruling that applies to every state across the country? In June, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Trump administration. The justices ruled six to three that universal
Starting point is 00:02:51 injunctions likely exceed the equitable authority that Congress has given to federal courts. Now, Judge Laplante is testing the limits of the Supreme Court's ruling against universal injunctions. The judge has paused his order for seven days to allow time for an appeal, which will no doubt be filed. All that to say, you can expect to hear a lot more about this case in the coming days and weeks. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth made a big announcement on Thursday. Hegsses says the U.S. is unleashing military drone dominance. Hegsaith has issued a new order that will fast-track drone production in the interest of outpacing Russia and China, in the area of unmanned warfare.
Starting point is 00:03:35 Heggsas shared a video making the announcement as drones flew beside him. Take a listen. We were brought here to rebuild the military, match capabilities to the threats of today. So while our adversaries have produced millions of cheap drones, before us, we were mired in bureaucratic red tape. Not anymore.
Starting point is 00:03:56 In June, President Trump issued an executive order unleashing American drone dominance to bolster our drone industry and arm our war fighters, because that's what we're all about. So today I'm rescinding restrictive policies that stifle production, and this will unleash American manufacturing and the ingenuity of our war fighters by doing three key things.
Starting point is 00:04:20 First, we're gonna bolster the US drone manufacturing base by producing thousands of American-made products, prioritizing by American. We'll arm combat units with a variety of low-cost American crafted drones, leveraging our world-leading engineers and AI experts. And third, we're going to train as we expect to fight. According to Fox News, Hegsa says he expects the U.S. to establish domain dominance in the area of unmanned aircraft systems by the end of 2027. Finally, President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump will travel to central Texas today to survey the damage that was caused by
Starting point is 00:05:02 the flash floods there last week. The president is expected to meet with first responders and families who have been affected by these deadly floods. Texas Senator Ted Cruz and Texas Governor Greg Abbott are both expected to join Trump on this trip. At least 120 people have been confirmed to have been killed by these floods, including 36 children. There are at least 160 people who are still missing. Camp Mystic, the Christian Girls Camp was one of the hardest hit areas. at least 27 campers and staff from the camp are among those who have been confirmed to have been killed by these floods. One of the camp counselors at Camp Mystic was a young lady, 18 years old, named Chloe Madeline Childress. She was from Houston, Texas.
Starting point is 00:05:49 She started attending Camp Mystic when she was in the third grade and attended all the way until 12th grade. And then after graduating high school became a counselor there. Her funeral is taking place tomorrow on Saturday. And in her obituary, she is described as a lover of music. She taught herself how to play the guitar. She was also a varsity cross country runner and the founder of a club called Love Our Senior Citizens. In the fall, Chloe had planned to attend the University of Texas at Austin to pursue a career as a doctor. And of course, we keep the children's family and all of those families affected by the flash floods in Texas in our prayers.
Starting point is 00:06:28 There are some links in today's show notes. if you want to support the recovery effort and communities, churches, organizations that are providing support to those affected.
