Starting point is 00:00:25 We'd love to talk. Business. Liz Cheney is firing back at Trump after he called her a warhawk. I'm Virginia Allen, and this is the Daily Signal Top News for Friday, November 1st. Four days until the election, and we begin today's show with a fact check. Axios published a story today claiming that former president Donald Trump suggested during a campaign event that Liz Cheney should have guns trained on her face. CNN, Newsweek, Time Magazine, the Washington Post.
Starting point is 00:01:08 they all ran similar headlines. Cheney is a former Republican congresswoman from Wyoming, and she's a very fierce critic of Trump's. So, did Trump, in fact, say that Cheney should have guns trained on her face? Well, context is critical. Trump claimed that Cheney is a war hawk, a term that's used to describe politicians who introduce legislation aimed at steering the nation towards war.
Starting point is 00:01:34 Here is what Trump said with context. She's a radical warhol. hawk. Let's put her with a rifle standing there with nine barrel shooting at her, okay? Let's see how she feels about it. You know, when the guns are trained on her face, you know, they're all Warhawks when they're sitting in Washington in a nice building saying, oh, gee, will, let's send 10,000 troops right into the mouth of the enemy. The Harris campaign quickly began using Trump's comments against him. Senior advisor for Harris's campaign, Ian Sams, told MSNBC today, you have Donald Trump, who's talking about sending a prominent Republican to the firing squad,
Starting point is 00:02:13 and you have Vice President Harris talking about sending one to her cabinet. Harris has said that if elected president, she would appoint a Republican to her cabinet. Cheney fired back at Trump herself, writing on X, this is how dictators destroy free nations. They threaten those who speak against them with death. We cannot entrust our country and our freedom to a petty, vindictive, cruel, unstable man, Who wants to be a tyrant? While the Harris campaign is taking advantage of Trump's comments about Cheney, the Trump campaign is taking advantage of comments made by Mark Cuban. Mark Cuban is a businessman and a vocal Harris supporter.
Starting point is 00:02:55 During an interview on ABC's The View yesterday, Cuban claimed that Trump never has intelligent women around him. Donald Trump, you never see him around strong, intelligent women, ever. It's just that simple. They're intimidating to him. He doesn't like to be challenged by them. It did not take long for women who have and do work for Trump to fire back at Cuban. Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders worked for Trump as his press secretary, and she had this to say to Cuban. Martin Cuban just said there are no strong, intelligent women around President Trump.
Starting point is 00:03:31 It's a disgusting law. And it's pretty funny coming from Democrats who can't even tell you what a woman is. I worked for President Trump for two and a half years. Democrats tried to tear me down. President Trump empowered me and every other woman in America. R&C co-chair Laura Trump responded to Cuban's comments saying, just when you think the Kamala camp can't possibly alienate and divide people any more than they already have, now they attack women who support Trump. Nice job, Mark. And Trump's former White House senior counselor, Kellyanne Conway, reflected on a time during the Trump administration when she says she looked around the Roosevelt room and saw Brooke Rollins, Ivanka Trump, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, and Mercedes Schlapp. She said that between the five of us, we had 19 children.
Starting point is 00:04:22 At the time, ages 2 to 16, we had the highest rank in the White House as strong, intelligent women. We have the latest jobs numbers today. In October, the U.S. economy added 12,000 jobs, but Dow Jones had ever. estimated 100,000 jobs would be added in October. In fact, the latest jobs report is the weakest since 2020. So why is that? Here with us to explain is Heritage Foundation Public Finance economist E.J. and Tony. E.J., thanks for being here. My pleasure. Thank you for having me. So Dow Jones estimated that there would be 100,000 jobs that would be added to the U.S. economy in October, but instead there were 12,000 added. That's quite,
Starting point is 00:05:07 a discrepancy there in the numbers. Why was there such a big gap? Well, it certainly is a big gap. And on top of that, the previous two months were also revised lower. So the initial estimates, it turned out, were a little too overly optimistic. And once you put all of that together, the losses from the previous two revisions and the anemic gain today, it's only a hundred thousand. Excuse me, I should say it's a loss of a hundred thousand. So it's not even moving in the right direction anymore. The reason for that is simply because the economy is really slowing down. Now, has the hurricanes have an impact? Absolutely. Are strikes having an impact? Absolutely. But we also have other data in this report. It's from a survey of households, and it shows the number
Starting point is 00:05:54 of people employed is also falling. The reason that's significant, Virginia, is the fact that people are still counted as employed in that survey, even if they're temporarily out of work because of something like a strike. So it's very clear all of the data together shows us that things are really slowing down in the labor market. As far as what we know about the jobs that were added, those 12,000 jobs, what kind of jobs are we talking about here? It was literally all government. In fact, the private sector is losing jobs right now. So we had 40,000 government jobs get created and all of the job losses came from the private sector. So at this point, the productive part of the economy, Again, that's the private sector.
Starting point is 00:06:36 That's losing jobs. We are literally only adding government jobs at this point. And that's not simply a fluke from the month of October. This has been a longstanding trend of the Biden-Harris administration where a disproportionate number of jobs are being funded by taxpayer dollars. And that's true for both direct hires by the government and also indirect hires. What I mean by that is things like a nurse at a hospital whose salary is funded by a grant from the government. That person's salary is being paid for.
Starting point is 00:07:05 by the taxpayer. Well, E.J., you always put out such good analysis on these reports when they come out on social media. Tell us, how do we follow your work? Best place to follow me is going to be on Twitter or X, you know, whatever we call it these days. And the handle there is at Real E.J. Antone. A.N.I. The Heritage Foundation's E.J. Antony. E.J., thanks for your time. Thank you. Now, let's hit our news flash for the day. First up in the Middle East,
Starting point is 00:07:34 Israel carried out more strikes on Lebanon last night and today. The Associated Press reports that the strikes destroyed dozens of buildings in a suburb of Beirut. And 24 people were reportedly killed during strikes in northeast Lebanon today. And the IDF announced this afternoon that they have eliminated the head of national relations in Hamas's Political Bureau. Flash flooding in Spain has left over 200 people dead. The floods were caused by heavy rainfall in the Valencia area of Spain. Images of piled debris and piles of cars reveal just some of the devastation in eastern Spain. White House press officials have altered an official transcript of the president.
Starting point is 00:08:24 Specifically, they changed a transcript of the call in which President Joe Biden called Trump supporters garbage. The specific change is an insertion of an apostrophe. So let's give a quick recap here to the situation. Biden was commenting on remarks that a comedian, Tommy Hincliffe, said at a Trump rally. During that rally, the comedian referred to Puerto Rico as a floating island of garbage. Biden responded, saying the only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters. The White House added an apostrophe before the S on supporters. This slight grammatical change pointed to Biden criticizing the
Starting point is 00:09:06 comedian at Trump's rally instead of the millions of Americans who are supporting Trump for president. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer finds himself in some hot water this week. Schumer reportedly told administrators at Columbia University to dismiss the GOP criticism surrounding the school's handling of anti-Semitism on campus. The New York Post reports that the GOP-led House Education and Workforce Committee released a report in which they found that Schumer told the university's president that Democrats would not scrutinize the school over pro-Palestine demonstrations on campus.
Starting point is 00:09:44 Instead, he told the school that the political problems are really only among Republicans. Jazz Shaw passed away yesterday. He was the weekend editor of Hot Air and a conservative political pundit. You can read a little bit about his legacy in today's show notes. With that, we're going to leave it there for today.
