Starting point is 00:00:25 We'd love to talk. Business. President Trump reveals his long-term plan for the crackdown on crime in Washington, D.C. The president says Russia will face consequences if Putin won't agree to end the war with Ukraine. And the State Department is calling out the U.K. for violations of free speech. I'm Virginia Allen and for Tony Kennett. It is Thursday morning, August 14th. And this is your Top News in 10.
Starting point is 00:00:59 President Donald Trump says Congress needs to pass a crime bill. The president also says that he is planning. to work with Congress to extend the time that he can federalize the police here in Washington, D.C. Current law only allows for the federalization of D.C. police for 30 days. Trump announced earlier this week, of course, that he was federalizing the D.C. police and sending National Guard into Washington, D.C. to deal with crime in the nation's capital. But what happens when that 30 days is up? The Daily Signal's White House correspondent Elizabeth Mitchell asked the president that very question at a press conference on Wednesday.
Starting point is 00:01:35 at the Kennedy Center in D.C. Let's take a listen. Thank you, Mr. President. Your federalization of the police has a 30-day limit unless Congress acts to extend it. Are you talking to Congress about extending it, or do you believe 30 days is sufficient? Well, if it's a national emergency, we can do it without Congress, but we expect to be to Congress before Congress very quickly. And again, we think the Democrats will not do anything to stop crime, but we think the Republicans will do it almost unanimously. So we're going to need a crime bill that we're going to be putting in, and it's going to pertain initially to D.C. It's almost, we're going to use it as a very positive example, and we're going to be asking for extensions on that, long-term extensions, because you can't have 30 days.
Starting point is 00:02:20 30 days is that's by the time you do it. We're going to have this in good shape, and don't forget, in the border, everyone said it would take years and you'd have to go back to Congress. I never went to Congress for anything. I just said, close the border. And they closed the border. And that was the end of it. I didn't go back to Congress.
Starting point is 00:02:40 We're going to do this very quickly. But we're going to want extensions. I don't want to call national emergency. If I have to, I will. But I think the Republicans in Congress will approve this pretty much unanimously. D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser has called Trump's actions in the nation's capital both unsettling and unprecedented. But she has also said that the fact that we have more loyal, law enforcement and presence in neighborhoods, that may be positive.
Starting point is 00:03:05 We are just one day away from President Trump's meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. Speaking at that same press conference on Wednesday at the Kennedy Center, Trump said that the meeting is really just setting the stage for a second meeting. If the first one goes okay, we'll have a quick second one. I would like to do it almost immediately. And we'll have a quick second meeting between President Putin and President Zelenskyy and myself if they'd like to have me there. And that would be a meeting where maybe it could be absolutely
Starting point is 00:03:36 work. But the first meeting will not work that out. Certain great things can be gained in the first. It's going to be a very important meeting. But it's setting the table for the second meeting. I think the second meeting, if the second meeting takes place, now there may be no second meeting, because if I feel that it's not appropriate to have it because I didn't get the answers that we have to have, then we're not going to have a second meeting. Trump also said that there would be very severe consequences for Russia if Putin does not agree to end the war with Ukraine. Now, Trump didn't get into details and provide additional information as to what those consequences might be. But we do know that the president has often turned to using tariffs when dealing with Russia and to apply pressure to Russia.
Starting point is 00:04:19 The meeting tomorrow is going to take place near downtown Anchorage at a military base that actually played a really critical role in countering Russia during the Cold War. So quite the setting for this very important meeting. Ahead of the meeting with Putin, Trump did meet virtually with Ukraine President Vladimir Zelensky and other European leaders on Wednesday. And speaking of European leaders, the Trump administration is accusing the United Kingdom of a number of human rights abuses. The administration has made the accusations in a sort of human rights report card. The Daily Signal's George Codwell cover the story for the Daily Signal.
Starting point is 00:04:55 The State Department released this report this week, and they, gave several specific areas of concern regarding what they're seeing related to human rights abuses in the United Kingdom. First, the report states that the human rights situation worsened in the United Kingdom during the year. Significant human rights issues included credible reports of serious restrictions on freedom of expression, including enforcement of or threat of criminal or civil laws in order to limit expression. The report also found instances of crime, violence, or threats of violence
Starting point is 00:05:30 motivated by anti-Semitism in the UK. UK Prime Minister Kier Starmor has previously rejected the Trump administration's allegations of infringement on free speech in the UK. Well, at the White House back in February, Stammer responded to a question that was posed by the Daily Signal's own Elizabeth Mitchell on this very topic. And Starrmer argued that the UK has had free speech for a very, very long time and will continue to have free speech. But we have to look at the examples that the State Department has given because they tell a different story. According to this report from the State Department, they found that last year a man was jailed and handed an eight-week sentence for posting a meme suggesting a link between migrants and knife crime. And in another instance,
Starting point is 00:06:13 an individual was convicted in England for engaging in silent prayer in violation of a safe zone. In response to the report, a UK government spokesperson said free speech is vital for democracy around the world, including here in the UK, and we are proud to uphold freedoms whilst keeping our citizens safe. Well, you can decide for yourself if the UK is indeed protecting free speech by checking out George Cawdwell's full report on the story in today's show notes.
