Starting point is 00:00:00 President Donald Trump signed 42 executive orders on his first day, and one of them is already facing a test. I'm your host, Rob Lewy, and this is the Daily Signal's Top News in 10 for Tuesday, January 21st, 2025. President Donald Trump made good on his promise to take action to secure the border on day one of his administration with 10 executive orders. The executive orders include a declaration of national emergency at the border, an end to catch and release, the reinstatement of in Mexico, a designation of cartels as global terrorists, a suspension of refugee resettlement, and an end to birthright citizenship for children of illegal aliens, plus several others to secure the border.
Starting point is 00:00:51 Trump signed the executive orders from the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office Monday night in front of the media and White House staff. Sir, this is a proclamation declaring a national emergency at the southern border of the United States. That's a big one. A lot of big ones, huh? You know what that means, right? The ink was barely dry Tuesday when 18 state attorneys general filed a lawsuit over his order to end universal birthright citizenship.
Starting point is 00:01:19 The Heritage Foundation's Laura Reese writes for the Daily Signal that Trump prohibited U.S. government agencies from issuing or accepting documents recognizing U.S. citizenship for children born in the United States if neither the mother nor father were a lawful permanent resident or a United States citizen at the time of the child's birth. Laura now joins me in studio to discuss these historic actions. Laura, welcome and thank you for your work as director of the Heritage Foundation Center for border security and immigration. You've followed this issue very closely
Starting point is 00:01:53 over the course of the past four years in the border crisis that we've seen and witnessed under Joe Biden. How significant are these moves under Trump? Well, they're very significant, and thanks, Rob, for having me on. He kept his promises, and he is responding to historic levels
Starting point is 00:02:10 of illegal immigration that the Biden administration's open border policies and agenda gave us, really endangering Americans, whether it's their national security, their personal safety, and their pocketbooks. So Americans voted for this type of change to correct matters to get back to a lawful and orderly immigration system. And so far, President Trump, just in one day, is starting to deliver.
Starting point is 00:02:37 Taken collectively, what will these executive orders allow his administration to do? Well, in short, enforce the law. One, he's got to secure the border, stop the flow. that Biden allowed into the country. And he is doing that by suspending entries of aliens between ports of entry, not allowing them to defraud our asylum system by claiming fear, even though they're crossing between the ports of entry. You have to go to a port of entry, but also enforcing the law in the interior. The Biden administration, Secretary of Majorcas of Homeland Security, handcuffed ICE immigration and customs enforcement officials from enforcing our immigration laws,
Starting point is 00:03:25 narrowing it down to terrorism, spies, some aggravated felons, and that was about it. And so President Trump now is allowing the agents to do their job. And unfortunately, they have a big task, because now they have to go find the millions that Biden led into the country, many of whom are national national security threats, murders, rapists, pedophiles, not to mention the over one million aliens who already went through due process before an immigration judge received a final order of removal but then absconded. It was four years ago that Joe Biden took office and inherited one of the most secure borders in our country.
Starting point is 00:04:08 What happened over the course of his four years, as you just alluded to, that led us down this path to where we have a historic crisis that we're now trying to clean up? Well, before Joe Biden even took office while he was campaigning in a debate, he signaled to future illegal aliens that they should come in. Anyone should apply for asylum. Then when in office, Secretary Mayorkas, for example, said publicly multiple times, if you come as unaccompanied child, we will not turn you back. And so no surprise, we saw record numbers of illegal aliens across the border, record numbers of unaccompanied. children cross the border, record American deaths from fentanyl poisonings, a record number of migrant deaths at or near the border.
Starting point is 00:04:54 I mean, the list goes on and on, and they're all terrible records. Laura Reese, thank you for your work on this issue and joining the Daily Signal today. We are closely following all of Trump's executive orders, and you can track the latest developments and read analysis from Heritage Foundation experts at dailysignal.com. Marco Rubio was the first Trump nominee to secure Senate conference. Monday night on a vote of 99 to zero. The former Florida Senator was sworn in as Secretary of State Tuesday by Vice President J.D. Vance. Afterward, Rubio spoke to State Department staff. I want to thank President Trump for nominating me. This is an extraordinary honor and a privilege
Starting point is 00:05:33 to serve in this role. To be here, frankly, to oversee the greatest, the most effective, the most talented, the most experienced diplomatic corps in the history of the world, resides in this building. Earlier Tuesday, Rubio agreed to an interview with NBC's Today Show, which was supposed to be about foreign policy. Instead, anchor Craig Melvin pressed Rubio about Trump's pardons for January 6 political prisoners, prompting Rubio to rebuke the TV host on air. What message does this pardoning nearly all of them send to the rest of the world?
Starting point is 00:06:14 Well, we're going to focus on what makes America stronger and more prosperous and safer. not going to engage in domestic political debates. I can't at the in the role of state department. My job is to focus on the president's foreign policy. You know, I hope you guys will all understand. I mean, my days, at least in the time I'm at Department of State of Engaging in Domestic Politics will be put aside as I focus on the affairs that the United States has around the world. I mean, who's to say that if a crowd of folks who are displeased with something that happens at the capital in the future, who's to say that they don't just do it again? Yeah, I know. And I understand. I mean, but I'm not.
Starting point is 00:06:50 I think it's unfortunate. You know, our first engagement is I agree to come on this morning with you. I'm going to be working on foreign policy issues, and you want to revisit these issues that are going on in domestic politics. I'm just, it's not going to happen. If you have questions for me about foreign policy and engaging in the world, I'll be happy to talk to you about those. The U.S. Senate is expected to vote on other Trump nominees this week, including John Ratcliffe to head the CIA and Christy Noam to run the Department of Homeland Security. Other nominees are awaiting committee action. Four years ago, it took the Senate more than two months to confirm then-President Joe Biden's cabinet secretaries.
Starting point is 00:07:26 Trump had to wait three months during his first term in 2017. We'll be back with our news flash right after this. President Trump and Vice President Vance visibly rolled their eyes as the Episcopal Bishop of Washington lectured them on being kind to transgender people and immigrants at Tuesday's National Prayer Service, according to the Daily Caller News Foundation. I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now. There are gay, lesbian, and transgender children in democratic, Republican, and independent families, some who fear for their lives. And the people, the people who pick our crops and clean our office buildings, who labor and poultry farms and meat packing plants who wash the dishes after we eat in restaurants and work
Starting point is 00:08:25 the night shifts in hospitals. They may not be citizens or have the proper documentation. But the vast majority of immigrants are not criminals. Trump and Vance attended the National Prayer Service along with their families at the Washington National Cathedral. Bishop Marianne Buddy is a staunch critic of Trump, so her remarks didn't necessarily come as a surprise. Congressman Andy Biggs, a former chairman of the House Freedom Caucus, announced Tuesday that he's exploring a run for Governor of Arizona. Democrat Katie Hobbs was elected to governor in 2022 and will be up for re-election next year. In a statement, Biggs said he wants to help his native state fulfill its tremendous capacity. Ryan Corbett's 894-day
Starting point is 00:09:15 captivity in Afghanistan is coming to an end. His family announced Tuesday that he was freed by the Taliban hours after President Trump was sworn into office. NBC News reported that Corbett and one other unnamed hostage were exchanged for terrorist Khan Muhammad, who is currently serving a life sentence in the United States. The Ohio State Buckeyes won the college football playoff national championship Monday night, defeating the Notre Dame Fighting Irish 34 to 23. But it's what happened after the game that's making news. Here's what Notre Dame quarterback Riley Leonard said at a post-game news conference. Before I answer your question, I want to thank my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for giving me
Starting point is 00:09:58 the opportunity to play in this game. I wrote on my hand, Proverbs 2717, as iron sharpens irons, so should one man sharpen another. And I think, like I said, throughout the week, you know, us in Ohio State were the two teams who praised Jesus Christ the most, and I think that we strengthen each other in our faith. in our faiths through coming to this game and competing against each other. Players from Ohio State were equally effusive of their praise for God, starting with quarterback Will Howard. Well, man, before I say anything, I just got to give my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ,
Starting point is 00:10:38 all the glory and all the praise, man. Amen. Amen. The Lord did something special on this team, and we're just so thankful. Everyone on this team we all bought in, and I just love every guy out here, put all the work in this whole year. We're so thankful, so honored and blessed to be here. All glory and praise of my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for this moment. The way he's been moving on this team has been incredible. And that'll do it for today's episode.
