Starting point is 00:00:00 President-elect Donald Trump will take office in just 74 days. His new chief of staff will have a big hand in the transition. I'm your host, Rob Lewy, and this is the Daily Signal's top news in 10 for Friday, November 8th, 2024. Susie Wiles will serve as the next White House chief of staff after successfully guiding Trump's winning presidential campaign. Trump tapped Wiles for the job Thursday, making her the first woman in history to hold that role. Wiles is the daughter of NFL kicker and legendary sportscaster Pat Summerall. She began her career in politics working for Congressman Jack Kemp, one of her father's teammates on the New York Giants. Wiles ran the 2016 Trump campaign operations in Florida and became CEO of Trump's Save America Pack in 2021.
Starting point is 00:00:55 With little more than two months until inauguration day, she will first turn her attention to filling out Trump's cabinet and the White House staff. Sean Spicer, who was Trump's first White House press secretary, praised the decision in an interview with the Daily Signal today. Susie's been around President Trump now for well over two years and in a senior leadership. She was on the 2016 campaign, the 2020, but as like a state person. This time she was at the highest levels. So to stick around that well, she's going to start off really understanding the president, his mindset, how he operates, which was something that nobody else had done. she's got the respect of people from, you know, all the Maga world to the Jeb Bush's through the world. She, so she knows Trump.
Starting point is 00:01:40 She knows people. She is very well respecting the campaign. I think she's going to do very, very well and hit the ground running. Make sure you continue to follow the daily signal for the latest news on the Trump transition. While the dust is still settling from the 2024 election, Senate Republicans are tasked with choosing who will lead them in their new majority. Republican Mitch McConnell of Kentucky is stepping down from his leadership job after 18 years. And next Wednesday, upon returning to Washington, Republican senators will choose from among South Dakota's John Thune, Texas's John Cornyn, and Florida's Rick Scott to be their next leader.
Starting point is 00:02:18 Earlier today, Scott picked up the endorsement of the influential conservative action project. 19 conservative leaders said they are backing the Florida senator because he's most aligned with Trump's agenda. They called him, quote, a new, strong, courageous leader who will bring change to the Senate and to our country. Joining us now in studio is Bradley Devlin, politics editor for The Daily Signal. So you mentioned Trump's priorities and the agenda. How important is this job in Washington, D.C., come January 2025?
Starting point is 00:02:50 So important. Listeners of this podcast will know the way that the Senate does business under Mitch McConnell. That has an opportunity to come to an end with this. Senate leadership election. No more omnibuses, no more forking over millions and millions of dollars and supplementals to foreign countries. Let's get back to the basics. Let's get back to the literal bread and butter issues that won Trump, this remarkable victory, frankly, on Tuesday. And this is the best chance that Republicans have to do that going into a second Trump term. if we don't have reform, if we continue to go down the status quo path, well, Mitch McConnell
Starting point is 00:03:35 was serving in that position for what, 18 years? That's a big problem because you might not get another bite of the apple for 18 years if it's, you know, any three of these guys. Scott has come out, Cornyn has come out, and Thune's signal that he's willing to consider term limits. But right now, there's no guarantees, right? There's handshake agreements and backroom deals, maybe. But we don't have any sort of firm confirmation because that's the way that the Senate Majority Leader position operates, right? It's concentrated power for a really, really long time. And these three men are going to be called by their conference, I think, especially after a raucous previous session in Congress to kind of break that cycle. Bradley Devlin, you are the host of The Signal Sitdown.
Starting point is 00:04:21 I encourage our listeners to subscribe to that show where they can find your interview with Rick Scott. Thank you for bringing us up to speed on the Senate Republican leadership election. Thanks, Rob. Again, that vote will take place by secret ballot on Wednesday. You can find the latest news on our website at daily signal.com. Democrats are having a hard time coping with Vice President Kamala Harris's defeat. That's particularly true here in Washington, D.C., where she won over 92% of the vote. The Daily Signals Elizabeth Mitchell and Tim Kennedy hit the streets of D.C. to talk with locals about the loss.
Starting point is 00:04:56 They discovered a range of reasons and even some who admitted that Harris had her missteps. Here's what one Harris voter told them. Honestly, everybody's like, OMG, the word is going to end. I don't think it's going to be that bad. Like, of course, things are going to change. But some things might actually get better, like the wars and the other countries. He might actually fix that. The economy, I mean, the economy is regardless.
Starting point is 00:05:22 So, I mean, I don't think it'll be that bad as people are making it same. But, you know, it just, he can't make everyone happy. You know, nobody can make everyone happy. So it is what it is. Do you think a lot of people are having trouble kind of coping with this outcome? Of course, of course. Because a lot of people are looking at it like, oh, you just didn't want a woman president. You just didn't want a black woman president.
Starting point is 00:05:46 But it's not that. Like, it just is what it is. Like, stop trying to make it something that is not. You can find the full video on the Daily Signal's YouTube channel. The BBC reports that Israeli soccer fans were attacked by groups of young men in Amsterdam, causing injuries such as broken noses. They were reportedly targeted because of their religion.
Starting point is 00:06:19 Quote, they shouted, Jewish, Jewish, IDF, AdiF. Addie Rubin told the news outlet. Some of the soccer fans said they were ordered to show their passports and endured anti-Semitic slurs. The Free Beacon reports that in a sly move just before Tuesday's election, the Biden administration quietly waived mandatory terrorism sanctions on the Palestinian government. The State Department determined that the Palestinian Authority and the Palestine Liberation Organization are not complying with agreements to curb terrorism against Israel and end the pay-to-slay program, which rewards imprisoned terrorists for committing acts of violence. And yet despite this, the Biden administration waived those sanctions barring members of the Palestinian government from obtaining U.S. visas.
Starting point is 00:07:11 The Hill reports that two House Democrats are breaking with their party to oppose transgender athletes competing in women's sports. An overwhelming 80% of Americans don't want biological men competing against women, according to polling from RMG research. Congressman Tom Swazi of New York and Seth Moulton of Massachusetts spoke out after the issue appeared to have an impact on the election results. Quote, I have two little girls, Moulton said. I don't want them getting run over on a playing field by a male or formerly male athlete. But as a Democrat, I'm supposed to be afraid to say that. And that'll do it for today's episode. Thank you for listening to the Daily Signal's top news in 10.
Starting point is 00:07:54 Coming up tomorrow on our special Saturday interview edition, former White House press secretary, Sean Spicer, talks about the media's role in the 2024 election and offers his advice for the incoming Trump administration. When I was press secretary, I took questions from the Daily Signal in the briefing room, and you guys were at the forefront of that. And then Corinjean Pierre started to push out independent media in favor of big legacy media. That was opposite of how I handled the media at the White House where I was a all of the above kind of guy. And I think what this cycle showed, the Trump campaign in particular, was independent media, long-form podcasts are the future. Tune in tomorrow to hear our full interview.
