I'm Virginia Allen, and this is the Daily Signal Top News for Wednesday, August 23rd.
Here are today's headlines.
It's official President Donald Trump interview with Tucker Carlson will be released at 9 p.m. tonight.
And tonight's Republican presidential primary debate, which Trump won't be participating in, also begins at 9 p.m. Eastern.
Trump announced the news on true social writing, Sparks Will Fly and Joy.
The Republican debate tonight includes eight candidates, North Dakota Governor Doug Bergam, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, Florida Governor Rhonda Santis, former UN Ambassador and South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson, former Vice President Mike Pence, entrepreneur Vivek Ramoswamy, and South Carolina Senator Tim Scott.
However, there may actually ultimately just be seven candidates on the stage.
Governor Bergam injured himself playing basketball, and according to reports, he may be skipping
the debate tonight.
We'll be covering highlights from the debate on dailysignal.com and sharing clips across our
social media platforms, so be sure to be following us on social media and our website.
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy indicated in an interview last night that if President Joe Biden
wants to avoid an impeachment inquiry, he should provide the requested documents.
McCarthy said in an interview with Fox Business, per the New York Post, that the thing that
holds up whether we do impeachment inquiry provide us the documents, we're asking.
The whole determination here is how the Bidens handle this.
The House Speaker added, if they provide us the documents, there wouldn't be a need for
impeachment inquiry.
But if they withhold the documents and fight like they have now to not provide to the American public what they deserve to know,
we will move forward with impeachment inquiry when we come back into session.
The House is scheduled to come back into session on September 12th.
McCarthy also said, in reference to Biden,
why can't we get the documents to prove that you're not being bribed,
that you didn't get foreign money directly in, that you didn't talk to your son.
But what we found now is that the things that then Vice President Biden running for president
told the American public is not true.
And he's now had to change what he said.
There has, of course, been increased scrutiny of Hunter Biden's business dealings,
particularly with foreign companies, as questions have swirled about what role his father played
in his business relationships.
And some news out of South Carolina today,
the South Carolina Supreme Court has ruled that the state's heartbeat law is legal.
The law bans abortion after six weeks when an unborn baby has cardiac activity.
South Carolina's Republican Governor Henry McMaster praised the ruling,
saying in a statement the Supreme Court's ruling marks a historic moment in our state's history
and is the culmination of years of hard work and determination by so many in our state to ensure that the sanctity of life is protected.
With this victory, we protect the lives of countless unborn children and reaffirm South Carolina's place as one of the most pro-life states in America.
In January, South Carolina's Supreme Court had struck down a similar law.
In the months since, lawmakers changed the legislation.
and one justice retired, replaced with a new justice on the court.
President and CEO of Planned Parenthood South Atlantic,
Jenny Black, criticized the ruling,
saying in a statement to the New York Times,
this abortion ban is nearly identical to the ban struck down by this court just months ago.
The only thing that has changed is the makeup of the court.
Previously, South Carolina has allowed abortions up to 22 weeks.
And finally, today, a court has a court.
has ruled in favor of an orchard owner in Michigan, and the ruling is being hailed as a victory
for freedom of religion. Steve Tennis is the owner of Country Mill Farms in Michigan. In 2017,
he filed a lawsuit against the city of East Lansing, Michigan, after city officials told him
he could not sell the produce from his farm at the city's farmer's market. Tennis and his wife
were banned from selling at the market after writing on Facebook that they wouldn't host
same-sex weddings on their family farm because of their religious beliefs about marriage.
The Daily Seaginal actually went to the tennis's farm in 2017 and interviewed them to ask why they were taking
legal action after being banned from the farmer's market. Take a listen.
This isn't just about our ability to sell at the farmer's market. It's really about every
Americans right to be able to make a living and have to worry about the fear of being punished
by the government.
Earlier this week, a U.S. District Court Judge for the Western District of Michigan issued
a ruling in favor of the tennis family.
The judge said the tennas were wrongly forced to choose between following their religious
beliefs and a government benefit for which they were otherwise qualified.
ruled that the officials in East Lansing had violated the First Amendment rights of the
tennis family. The ruling states that the tennis's freedom to exercise their religion
were violated because denying a person an equal share of the rights, benefits, and privileges
enjoyed by other citizens because of their faith discourages religious activity.
A true victory for religious freedom.
And with that, that's going to do it for today's episode.
