I'm Virginia Allen, and this is the Daily Signal Top News for Friday, May 10th.
Here are today's headlines.
The United Nations approved a resolution today to grant new rights and privileges to Palestine.
The UN General Assembly voted to back Palestine's bid to become a full UN member.
143 members voted in favor of that resolution.
The U.S. was one of just nine nations alongside Israel to vote against it.
25 countries abstained from the vote. The resolution does not grant Palestine membership, but it does
recognize them as a qualified member to join the UN. If Palestine was granted UN membership, this would
essentially recognize a Palestinian state. Ahead of the vote Palestinian UN ambassador, Rehadman
Sour, said, a yes vote is a vote for Palestinian existence. It is not against any state. It is
an investment in peace.
Israeli UN ambassador
Gilad Ardan told the Assembly
as long as so
many of you are Jew-hating.
You don't really care that the Palestinians
are not peace-loving.
The 15-member security
council would have to approve
Palestine becoming a
UN member and the U.S. would
likely block Palestine from
becoming such a member by using
its veto power.
Former President Donald Trump said
today that if he becomes the next president, he will end a transgender policy from President Joe Biden on
day one. In April, Biden announced a rule change to Title IX that redefines sex to include
gender identity and sexual orientation. This means that men who identify as women can enter
female-only spaces like locker rooms and can compete in women's sports. Trump was asked what he
would do about this on the KL & Company radio show in Philadelphia today.
Take a listen.
We're going to end it on day one.
Don't forget, that was done as an order from the president.
That came down as an executive order.
And we're going to change it on day one.
It's going to be changed.
We're going to end it.
That's right.
Boys can go into girls' locker rooms.
The whole thing is crazy.
Look, it's like men playing in women's sports.
It's like open borders for the world to come in, send all their prisoners.
We'll take as many as you can give us.
Send all their people from mental institutions.
No, we'll get that change. Tell you people not to worry about it. It'll be signed on day one. It'll be terminated.
The executive order Trump is referring to here was signed by Biden in 2021. And that order declares that all students should be guaranteed an educational environment free from discrimination on the basis of sex, including discrimination in the form of sexual harassment, which encompasses sexual violence and including discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.
Again, this order flung the doors wide open for men who identify as women to enter women's only spaces and vice versa.
Biden's new Title IX rule is set to take effect on August 1st, but already multiple lawsuits have been filed against it,
so we may not see it take effect before the election depending upon how these lawsuits play out.
We will keep you all up to date on that as the news develops.
Negotiations for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas were put on pause today.
Negotiations are ongoing, but earlier today ABC News reported that the delegations for Hamas and Israel had left Cairo without agreeing to a ceasefire deal.
Meanwhile, the Israeli War Cabinet has approved an expanded military operation in Rafa.
The city is believed to be the last major Hamas stronghold within Gaza.
Axios reports that according to sources, Israeli security cabinet has given the green light for the Israel Defense Forces to expand its area of operation in the southern city of Gaza.
And the Biden administration right now, though, is holding offensive weapons for Israel hostage over the military operations within Rafa.
Because military operations endanger a large civilian population in Rafa, Biden said this week that the U.S. won't send weapons if you,
Israel invades Ratha. In response to the president's position,
Florida Republican Representative Corey Mills told Fox News that he is preparing articles of impeachment against the president.
Mills has accused Biden of forcing Israel into what he calls a quid pro quo scenario,
since the president is threatening to withhold weapons over the Israeli government's actions within Gaza.
Mills said, now Joe Biden is pressuring Israel our biggest ally in the Middle East by pausing their funding that has already been approved in the House if they don't stop all operations with Hamas.
It's a very clear message, this for that.
And Georgia Republican Representative Andrew Clyde has called on the House to open an immediate impeachment inquiry into Biden over this situation.
Stay tuned.
Back in the courtroom in Manhattan for Trump's criminal trial case, the scenario was a bit less flashy today.
Porn star Stormy Daniels was on the stand yesterday, but today the theme in the courtroom was the paper trail that's at the center of the case.
Prosecutors called witnesses to the stand to seek answers on who knew about the payment to Stormy Daniels and Michael Cohen and when they knew about it.
Daniel signed a $130,000 non-disclosure agreement with Trump's former attorney Michael Cohen
near the end of the 2016 presidential election.
The Hill reports that in the courtroom today, a former Trump White House aide took to the witness stand.
Her role in the White House gave her close access to Trump when Trump allegedly met with Cohen
regarding the alleged hush money payments and deal.
Trump is accused of signing repayment checks to Cohen for the alleged.
alleged hush money payments to Daniels.
Multiple news outlets are reporting that Cohen himself is going to take the witness stand
on Monday, and that is going to kick off what is expected to be the most significant and
lively part of the trial.
Well, last week, we ended our Friday show with a film review of Guy Ritchie's new movie,
Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.
And we enjoyed the segment so much that we decided that we wanted to do another Friday
movie review segment and bring you some movie news. And we learned on Thursday that Warner Brothers
is in the middle of script writing for a new Lord of the Rings movie. Warner Brothers says that the
movies will explore storylines yet to be told. Right now, the working headline for the new film
is Lord of the Rings, The Hunt for Gallum. The current deal is for two films, and the production
company is aiming for a release in 2026. So it only seemed appropriate.
that we should bring in our resident daily signal,
Lord of the Rings scholar and expert to talk about this.
Managing editor Tyler O'Neill is here with us now.
Tyler, you have a Lord of the Rings print in your office,
a lot of Lord of the Rings paraphernalia.
So what was your reaction when you heard
that there is a yet another installment
of Lord of the Rings on the way?
Yeah, I'm very conflicted because, I mean,
to say that I loved the original trilogy
would be a vast understatement.
But to say that I was disappointed by pretty much everything that has come forward is also an
understatement.
So it's, I really hope, I have hope for this, but unfortunately after being burned by so
much subpar Star Wars content and so much subpar Lord of the Rings, I mean, the Hobbit,
turning the Hobbit into three epic movies seemed like such a great idea.
And then it actually happened and they were so disappointing that like, and I don't know if expert is the right term, but my brother got his role on a feature film because we're such huge Lord of the Rings nerds.
So you can claim expert.
Well, you're right.
I think so many Americans who are Lord of the Rings fans, myself included, have been very disappointed by The Hobbit by then the TV series, the Lord of the Rings fans.
myself included, have been very disappointed by the Hobbit, by then the TV series, The Lord of the Rings, the Rings of Power.
And the bar was just set so high with the first three movies, that first three of the trilogy.
And fortunately, we are seeing that Peter Jackson is involved in the production of these new movies,
but he was also involved in the production of the Hobbit movies, which has, I think, taken some wind out of the sales of,
All right, can Peter Jackson, the director of the original Lord of the Rings trilogy, can he do it again with another movie?
I don't know.
What do you think?
Yeah, I wonder.
I mean, fan backlash has been doing some weird things in Hollywood.
I think of what happened with the new Star Wars trilogy where they decided to go in a totally new, they first were way too derivative.
Then they said, all right, let's go in a totally new direction.
And then everybody panned the new direction so much that they reverted.
back to what they thought was the original and did so in an even worse way. So, like, I look at,
I look at the original trilogy and it was, it set such a high bar. I mean, there, you could barely
tell a story better than the way they did. Beat for beat, they stayed really faithful, especially
to the heart of those novels. And even though they, they took out a few things that people
weren't big fans of them taking out, like the scouring of the shire or the story.
of Tom Bombadale, I think they distilled, you know, that those Peter Jackson films really distilled
the message, the heart of those books and brought them to the screen in a way that, you know,
and I think it's really hard. Audiences need to understand. It's no easy feat to translate
something from the printed page to the screen. And we need to not be too harsh when the
they get it wrong. Our expectations should always be a little low. But of course, this set my
expectations really high. I hope there's a good story they're going to tell. Gollum's story seems
to be pretty well told in the originals. And I love Andy Circus. So like maybe they can surprise us.
My bar is lower now. So it might be better than I expect. Maybe that's the safe approach.
We all said our bars really low.
Well, we'll wait and find out, I guess, in 2026.
So we'll have you on before then, though, Tyler.
Don't worry to talk about some other movies.
But thanks for joining and enjoy your weekend.
Hey, thanks, you too.
