Starting point is 00:00:00 Vice presidential nominees J.D. Vance and Tim Walls will debate tonight. I'm Elizabeth Mitchell, and this is the Daily Signal Top News for Tuesday, October 1st. Senator J.D. Vance and Ohio Republican and Minnesota Governor Tim Walls, a Democrat, face off in the vice presidential debate Tuesday evening in New York City. Sources told CBS News that Vance first elected to public office in 2022 has spent more than a month preparing while maintaining a vigorous campaign. schedule. Beyond the issues, Vance and his company have keyed in on Walls' own policy record and his debate style in previous outings. Vance's goal, it seems, is to cast the Harris-Walls ticket as far left and incapable of solving the nation's problems, namely illegal immigration,
Starting point is 00:00:56 inflation, and worldwide instability. So far, Walls has been on the offensive on the campaign trail. He has called Trump and Vance weird. He's told the GOP ticket to mind your own business when it comes to abortion, and he's repeatedly claimed that he can't wait to debate Vance. Nonetheless, a report from CNN claims that Wals actually warned running mate Kamala Harris in August that he is a bad debater. More than a dozen campaign staffers told CNN that the Minnesota governor is afraid he will let Harris down. Wals also has been intensely preparing for the debate with campaign advisors, several of whom reportedly also were involved in Harris' debate prep. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg has played Vance opposite Walls. Buda
Starting point is 00:01:39 Judge also helped Harris prepare for her vice presidential debate in 2020. Sources told CNN that Walls' strategy is to brush Vance aside and focus on Trump because, as Walls recently asserted at a fundraiser in New York City, Vance is selling his soul to Donald Trump. The Israeli defense forces announced today that Iran launched missiles toward Israel. Millions of Israelis were directed to hide in bomb shelters while about 200 missiles flew into
Starting point is 00:02:17 Israel. Explosions have been reported in the central part of the nation, with Israel's Iron Dome interceptor missiles stopping much, but not all of the incoming Iranian barrage. This comes after a White House source earlier today so that a missile strike on Israel from Iran was imminent. The official told Fox News, the United States has indications that Iran is preparing to imminently launch a ballistic missile attack against Israel. We are actively supporting defensive preparations to defend Israel against this attack. A direct military attack from Iran against Israel will carry severe consequences for Iran. Iran has promised to retaliate against Israel
Starting point is 00:02:54 after the recent assassinations of some of its highest-ranking leaders. Tens of thousands of U.S. dock workers went on strike early Tuesday morning. Workers at 36 ports across the eastern United States walked off the job for the first time in decades. This situation could cause supply chain shortages and higher prices if it continues more than a few weeks. In dollar terms, the strike could cost the economy $4.5 billion to $7.5 billion, according to analysts at Oxford Economics. Doc workers left their jobs at midnight Monday when their current contract was set to expire. They went on strike because negotiations for a new labor contract with port employers reached an impasse. Dock workers make up to $39 an hour, making them some of the highest paid blue-collar workers
Starting point is 00:03:42 in the country. The death toll from Hurricane Helene has risen to at least 140 across six states. Hundreds of roads are closed, especially in North Carolina, where supplies are desperately needed. 56 people have died in North Carolina alone, according to CNN.
