Starting point is 00:00:01 Vice Presidential nominee J.D. Vance fact-checked the fact-checkers in last night's debate. I'm Elizabeth Mitchell, and this is the Daily Signal, top news for Wednesday, October 2nd. Vice Presidential nominees, Ohio Senator J.D. Vance and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz faced off last night. Vance refused to allow the moderators, CBS Evening News anchor Nora O'Donnell, and faced the nation chief foreign affairs correspondent Margaret Brennan. to live fact-check him without calling them out on it. When Brennan tried to interject with a comment on Haitian illegal immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, before moving on to the next question, Vance stopped her.
Starting point is 00:00:54 She tried to cut him off with a, we just don't have time with all these questions to allow you to respond. And Vance responded that the agreed upon rules did not allow moderators to fact-checked candidates. Here's the exchange. And just to clarify for our viewers, Springfield, Ohio does have. have a large number of Haitian migrants who have legal status, temporary protected status. Well, Mara, but- Thank you.
Starting point is 00:01:17 Senator, we have so much to get to. Margaret, I think it's important because- We're going to turn out of the economy. The rules were that you guys were going to fact-check. And since you're fact-checking me, I think it's important to say what's actually going on. The moderators asked Vance about Donald Trump's plan to deport illegal immigrants. Here's Vance. Before we talk about deportations, we have to stop the bleeding.
Starting point is 00:01:38 We have a historic immigration crisis because. because Kamala Harris started and said that she wanted to undo all of Donald Trump's border policies. 94 executive orders, suspending deportations, decriminalized illegal aliens, massively increasing the asylum fraud that exists in our system. That has opened the floodgates. And what it's meant is that a lot of fentanyl is coming into our country. I had a mother who struggled with opioid addiction and has gotten clean. I don't want people who are struggling with addiction to be deprived of their second chance,
Starting point is 00:02:09 because Kamala Harris led in fentanyl into our communities at record levels. Vance criticized Walls for his soft stance on censorship. Walls has said there's no First Amendment right to misinformation. Here are Walls and Vance. You can't yell fire in a crowded theater. That's the test. That's the Supreme Court test. Tim, fire in a crowded theater, you guys wanted to kick people off of Facebook for saying
Starting point is 00:02:34 that toddlers shouldn't wear a mask. The governor does have the floor. Fire in a crowded theater. That is crucial. criticizing the policies of the government, which is the right of every American. The moderators asked Walls about a false claim that he was in Hong Kong during the deadly Tiananmen Square massacre in June 1989. In response, Walls mentioned his upbringing in rural Nebraska.
Starting point is 00:02:56 Here he is. All I said on this was, is I got there that summer and misspoke on this. So I will just, that's what I've said. So I was in Hong Kong and China during the United. the democracy protest went in. And from that, I learned a lot of what needed to be in governance. Hezbollah, the terrorist organization, which effectively runs Lebanon, is an ally of Hamas,
Starting point is 00:03:35 the Palestinian terrorist organization that attacked Israel on October 7th. Both act as proxies of the Mullahs in Iran. The Israel Defense Forces announced limited, localized, and targeted ground raids against Hezbollah on Monday. The Israeli military's Arabic spokesperson urged the residents of another 24 villages in southern Lebanon to evacuate immediately. This comes after the Israeli defense forces announced Tuesday that Iran launched missiles towards Israel. Millions of Israelis were directed to hide in bomb shelters while about 200 missiles flew. into Israel. Israel's Iron Dome interceptor missiles stopped much but not all of the incoming Iranian barrage. President Joe Biden directed the U.S. military to help Israel shoot down those
Starting point is 00:04:22 Iranian missiles. President Joe Biden travels today to North and South Carolina as the death toll from Hurricane Helene reaches at least 166. The president will survey the damage from the storm. The Charlotte Observer wrote that his visit could stall airborne relief from reaching. the Carolinas. His visit caused flight restrictions prohibiting aircraft use near the Greenville-Spartenburg in Asheville airports from 12.30 p.m. to 3.15 p.m. There are also flight restrictions near Raleigh. Several areas affected by the storm, including Asheville, North Carolina, are struggling to find clean drinking water. Vice President Kamala Harris has been criticized for her response to Hurricane Helene. Harris went from a campaign rally in Las Vegas to Washington, D.C. on Monday to attend
Starting point is 00:05:09 a federal emergency management agency briefing. She booked a trip Wednesday to Augusta, Georgia, which was hit by the storm. The New York Post reported that the aides of former Vice President Mike Pence say that Kamala Harris has not upheld her role as vice president in response to the hurricane. Trump and Pence held pre-Hurricane season preparedness meetings yearly during their time in office. When Biden was Barack Obama's vice president, he had similar meetings in 2021, 2021, 2022, and 23. The former aide told the post,
Starting point is 00:05:39 Harris hasn't demonstrated the ability or desire to do the apolitical parts of the job that have a huge impact on our lives. Why should Americans trust her to start in the Oval Office? Harris was also criticized for a Monday social media post showing her being briefed by FEMA. Former President Donald Trump called the photo fake and staged in a post on X. In the photo, Harris appears to take notes on a piece of paper that the paper appears to be blank. Her wired headphones aren't plugged in to her phone. Thanks for listening to today's episode of The Daily Signal, top news. Tomorrow morning, be sure to tune in to our interview edition.
