Treasury Secretary Yellen claims Biden is mentally fit to remain in office.
I'm Elizabeth Mitchell, and this is the Daily Signal, top news, for Tuesday, July 9th.
At a hearing on Tuesday, U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said the president's cabinet has not discussed using the 25th Amendment to remove Joe Biden from office.
Representative Mike Lawler, a Republican from New York, asked Yellen during a House Financial Services' Congress.
committee hearing if she had noticed mental or cognitive decline in any of her meetings with
Biden.
She said President Biden has been extremely effective in meetings.
Here's a clip of her testimony from Fox News.
The president is extremely effective in the meetings that I've been in with him.
That includes many international meetings that are multi-hour, like his meetings with
President Xi. I've met with him with other leaders.
Yellen declined to answer Lawler's question about the last time she met with the president,
saying that information is private. Yellen said, no, when Lawler asked if the cabinet had
discussed invoking the 25th Amendment. The 25th Amendment says the vice president would
replace a president if he or she died in office or resigned, or if members of the
the president's cabinet declared the president unable to fulfill the duties of office.
If the cabinet were to decide to evoke the amendment, it would be the first time in U.S. history.
At least 10 Democrats have said either publicly or privately that Biden should drop out of the race.
NPR and Spectrum News reported that they include representatives Joe Morel, Adam Smith, Mark Takano, and Jim Himes.
Representative Jerry Nadler walked back the call, he was.
reportedly made for President Biden to step down, saying Democrats have to support the president.
The Trump campaign announced on Monday that the platform committee of the Republican National
Convention has adopted former President Donald Trump's GOP platform. This includes new language on
abortion. The language marks a significant departure from the party's life messaging in 2016.
The new platform no longer calls for federal protections for unborses.
born babies, instead suggesting that the matter is up to the states.
The 2016 platform included the word abortion 35 times, while the 2024 platform only includes
mention of abortion once.
The new language, under the subhead, Republicans will protect and defend a vote of the people
from within the states on the issue of life, reads,
We proudly stand for families in life.
We believe that the 14th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States
guarantees that no person can be denied life or liberty without due process
and that the states are, therefore, free to pass laws protecting those rights.
After 51 years, because of us, that power has been given to the states
and to a vote of the people.
The platform opposes late-term abortion while supporting access to birth control and in vitro fertilization.
Only about 2.3% of IVF embryos result in a live birth, according to a Heritage Foundation report,
meaning that the rest don't survive the process, are deliberately destroyed, or remain frozen for an indeterminate period of time.
The House is set to vote this week on legislation to compel voters to show proof of citizenship when registering to vote.
The SAVE Act, sponsored by Texas Republican Representative Chip Roy,
aims to deter illegal immigrants from voting.
More than 10 million illegal immigrants and millions more paroled aliens have entered the country
since President Joe Biden took office in January of 2021.
The bill has the support of House Speaker Mike Johnson and former President Donald Trump.
House Minority Whip, Catherine Clark, a Massachusetts Democrat,
reportedly told her Democrat caucus members in a memo that the bill would impose an extreme burden on countless Americans to vote.
Clark said there has been zero evidence of the widespread fraud that this bill purports to target.
Senator Mike Lee, a Republican from Utah, is the sponsor of a Senate version of the legislation,
which has 120 co-sponsors in both chambers.
Biden administration officials have said this one,
week's NATO summit will be a bridge to eventual NATO membership for Ukraine. NATO sent military
equipment to Ukraine and expanded its alliance to include both Fendlin and Sweden after Russia invaded
Ukraine in February 2022. Under Article 5 of NATO's founding treaty, any member of the alliance,
including the U.S., must send troops to defend another NATO member that has been attacked.
If Ukraine joined NATO, the U.S. would have to join the country's war with Russia.
The summit is taking place on the 75th anniversary of NATO's founding.
And that's all the news for today's episode.
