Starting point is 00:01:39 Hello, the internet, and welcome to this episode of 1.35 Bill Trend, which is what the bill trend dollars bill trend dollars oh yeah okay that's what the mega millions lotteries up to or is it well uh you're not gonna get all that because the government's gonna get its greedy myths on there i'll tell you that much um we'll talk about that in a second yes yes that's trending you guys should know that like almost every day when we go to google trends and you know twitter trending most days there's something about there's some
Starting point is 00:02:14 lottery story in there that we just ignore like the lottery is always on people's mind but this is one where it seems like it's broken through to be a national news story so it's part of our our, you know, but it's part of our, like, it's ingrained in, like, the mythology of American-ness. Like, the idea that you'll hit it big. Yeah. Hit it big one day. So, yeah, we always got our eyes on that mega millions. I'm Jack. Oh, okay.
Starting point is 00:02:36 Good to see you. Sorry. Hey, you are. And I'm. Go ahead, guess. A little foggy here. Guess, guess, guess. Are you Miles?
Starting point is 00:02:44 Yeah. Yeah. Nailed it. All right. All right. There we go. Yes. Yes. Yes. You miles. Yeah. Yeah. All right. There we go. We're back on track. Golden Globes. Globes. Drag car.
Starting point is 00:02:51 Michael hosted one of the opening monologue was amazing. His whole standup persona is so like relaxed and intimate. And like, I don't know that the whole opening monologue is incredible everybody should go the way well he is a master of like you know building tension with his setups in this way it's so low energy but you're just like oh my god you know he's about to fucking turn it on its head with this punch line where you're like you can feel it coming and then boom he hits you with it i mean yeah i think just starting off by getting into this is like how why'd i get the job because i'm black like
Starting point is 00:03:30 just getting coming out there with it i thought it was funny i didn't see the uh we only watched because anna was like oh you gotta watch opening uh monologue which was great i just saw some of the winners and i was like oh they they look like they got a lot of the fan favorites on the winners list and i do think just with regards to drab it's a great showcase they got him in front got a lot of the fan favorites on the winner's list. And I do think just with regards to Gerard, it's a great showcase. They got him in front of a lot of people. And I bet Will do good things for his career because he managed to just be like, yeah, I'm going to stop your award show and just do what I'm so good at for 10 minutes. In terms of the award show, include you know my favorite musical or
Starting point is 00:04:06 comedy the banshees of in a sharon um fucking dark ass movie that again i love having a place where you can acknowledge comedy in an award show it always seems somewhat arbitrary like elvis which was a musical right right? Am I wrong? Right, right, right. I mean, I would say I would put it in that category. It was nominated in the drama category and not the musical or comedy category. But The Banshees of Inushirin, which is definitely a darkly funny movie. I think it's because all of Martin McDonDonough's stuff they kind of process as comedy
Starting point is 00:04:45 on some level like in Bruges I think may have been nominated when it came out too as a comedy I can't remember but yeah and then Michelle Yao and Jonathan Kee Kwan yeah from everything everywhere all at once were like kind of the big wins
Starting point is 00:05:02 in the acting categories that everybody was excited about just like i said i think that the same things are coming back up it's like what's do we need the awards still because that was the lowest ratings ever i mean last night was oh yeah you had the awards going up on a tuesday what the fuck did you think was gonna happen i mean there's no i don't think there's most people didn't even realize I saw so many tweets that people were like, wait there's awards tonight on a Tuesday
Starting point is 00:05:29 so right. Yeah but yeah, I was surprised they used to not be on a Tuesday. Is that right? It's either a weekend or a Sunday. They're always on a Sunday Sunday. Yeah first Sunday or January usually but they were like, I don't know where nobody's going to watch it. Yeah yeah like maybe maybe less eyes on this one just just let's build the confidence back up to a sunday
Starting point is 00:05:51 yeah anyways george santos let's talk about this man real quick because we talked about how the initial article that came from the new york that was like, Hey, we, we went back and tried to confirm any of the stuff from his, uh, bio and like, none of it's true. So I, but I don't think we've talked a lot about like what did come, what did turn out to be the truth,
Starting point is 00:06:17 which is that he is essentially a wanted con man. Yeah. He lied about everything. Even. Yeah. He said his mom died on 9-11 once on twitter and then like if you look at his tweets then he was like oh man it's always around this time of year i think about my mom and it was during christmas it's like lost her one year ago today and it was
Starting point is 00:06:35 like december 23rd was the date of that tweet and you're like man just can't keep his shit straight yeah like you're just you're just like you're just like that kid who was like on the schoolyard in the pre-internet era where you could just say any old thing and you're like yo his uncle is sylvester stallone and his dad drives the back to the future car but it's in the garage right now yep uh but yeah he was just you know confronted in like in the i think the rayburn building of the capital and they're like hey you, hey, you're a fucking con man. You're going to fucking resign. And this was kind of his his energy. I will not. I will not.
Starting point is 00:07:14 So I don't know how the Republicans deal with this one. You know, they bang the drum of the swamp and liars and transparency and all this shit. But like, meanwhile, they're like, we need to gut the ethics committee and this guy's a fantastic liar not many people have actually given a statement on whether or not they think george santos uh should stay or go but yeah we'll see my favorite lie that he told was that he was a college volleyball champion and he was like an outstanding striker for uh the Baruch College volleyball championship team. I don't even know. And I'm a little weird in this way.
Starting point is 00:07:50 I don't follow collegiate volleyball all that closely. But I don't know if they didn't even bother to check if Baruch College won the volleyball championship or if he did. You said spiker or striker? Striker. Striker. Oh, is it called spiker? I don'tker striker right striker oh is it called spiker i don't think there's a striker is it i might be mixing it up with uh might be having some confusion around sports i don't give a shit about because you have like your outside hitters your middle blockers who are always like the the tallest people and then you have your liberos ds defensive specialists like shout out
Starting point is 00:08:25 blair sake that's what she's doing over at ucla the god but yeah whatever either way all of it's a lie and he will not fucking resign and i think it's only going to open the door to more people be like oh shit you can just okay i'll say anything then i was in the special forces i did the kill shot on osama bin laden uh i also also invented Domino's pizza. Yeah. Great. You're in. He told me,
Starting point is 00:08:48 I remember specifically, that he was into sports a little bit, that he was a star on the Baruch volleyball team and that they had won the league championship. The league championship? What can I tell you?
Starting point is 00:08:58 Isn't that the national title? Yeah. You know what I mean? In collegiate sports, doesn't it turn to a national championship? I mean, I guess it could be a traditional thing guess it won our dang league man whatever yeah do i play sport am i into sports yeah i don't know you tell me champions league of college basketball with my team the what um yeah truly amazing uh and then the the mega millions as of this recording, supposedly up to 1.35 billion.
Starting point is 00:09:27 And then there's just a lot of political talking points around. But actually, once the government gets their mitts on it, you're only actually going to get $25 because government takes 99%. Exactly. exactly yeah the the big rumors that the irs would collect nearly 850 million in taxes from the winner which is just a not not true um well i mean yeah when you break it down it's like because you have because you can take it two ways you can take the annuity which will get you a larger money or you can be like or you can get the upfront payment right now and that's about 570 million and then because you take it there then yes 24 is withheld for federal taxes because you just got 570 million dollars but i think the way they're doing is like so it leaves you with this and
Starting point is 00:10:15 subtract that against 1.35 billion and the irs is taking 850 million right right right but whatever look if you win i'm sure you're to be having a good time or cursed. Who knows? But it does just, again, kind of weaponize the perfection of the lottery for like an American talking point and make it like anti-taxation pro. Of course. Yeah, yeah. Libertarianism.
Starting point is 00:10:41 Because in your mind, you're like, you you think you go i could win 1.35 billion and then if someone says actually if you take the one lump sum it's 570 you're like what 570 million billion dollars in my mind like that i've already spent your life will change with a fucking three hundred thousand dollars let's be real so So, uh, but yeah, but I get it. That's how you get, that's how you get the little billionaire inside of all Americans to be like, tax is bad. Cause that could be me one day in Lambeau.
Starting point is 00:11:13 Right. All right. Let's take a quick break. We'll be right back. I've been thinking about you. I want you back in my life. It's too late for that. I have a thinking about you. I want you back in my life. It's too late for that. I have a proposal for you.
Starting point is 00:11:29 Come up here and document my project. All you need to do is record everything like you always do. One session. 24 hours. BPM 110. 120. She's terrified. Should we wake her up?
Starting point is 00:11:43 Absolutely not. What was that? You didn't figure it out? I think I need to hear you say it. That was live audio of a woman's nightmare. This machine is approved and everything? You're allowed to be doing this? We passed the review board a year ago.
Starting point is 00:12:00 We're not hurting people. There's nothing dangerous about what you're doing. They're just dreams. Dream Sequence is a new horror thriller from Blumhouse Television, iHeartRadio, and Realm. Listen to Dream Sequence on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. An individual that came to the school saying that God sent him to talk to me about the mascot switch.
Starting point is 00:13:58 As a leader, you choose hills that you want to die on. Why would we want to be the losing team? I'd just take all the other stuff out of it. Segregation academies. When civil rights said that we need to integrate public schools, these charter schools were exempt from that. Bigger than a flag or mascot. You have to be ready for serious backlash. Listen to Rebel Spirit on the iHeartRadio app,
Starting point is 00:14:21 Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. And we're back. And Naomi Osaka provided us with... An announcement. Yeah. She's preggers. She's pregnant with Cordae's child. Just another Blasian parent announcement. Felt that.
Starting point is 00:14:45 You know, Naomi, I think you're going to be a great, great parent. Great parent. Love to parent announcement. Felt that. You know, Naomi, I think you're going to be a great, great parent. Great parent. Love to see you. Love to see you. Corday has changed his name from, was it YBN? Yeah. Now it's Corday. Growing up, man. Growing up, bro. What did YBN stand for?
Starting point is 00:15:01 Wasn't that the crew he was in? Am I completely off by that? Got it. Yeah. It was like wasn't that the crew he was in okay am i completely off by that got it yeah oh yeah yeah it was like a whole collective young boss n words for my for my people who actually can't say the word you know i'm gonna tell it to you pop eyes kid yeah this is okay you know the pop eyes kid meme most of y'all know this is like the little black kid and he's holding the cup and he kind of gives side eye like as a gift and it's just become if you're literate in internet memes you know popeye's kid so this young man is now like growned up and he's in college uh and he's playing college football his name is denursed colin and he's playing uh lakeie College, and he signed a NIL name image license deal, or likeness deal, with Popeyes, basically.
Starting point is 00:15:50 Because he's like, hey, you want to get, let's do something. So yeah, he's just now, he's officially sponsored by Popeyes as a collegiate athlete. So good on him. He said before, like in an interview recently, people were like, hey, what's going on? Like, how do you, what's it like? Yeah. He said, quote, before I did take it as a fence. Now I do take it as a joke.
Starting point is 00:16:11 When I look back at it, I laugh at it in general. I'm known as being a funny guy. So look at that. Good for you. Get, get your little Popeye's check, man. He also has, you know, sometimes you have people who you can kind of see them in their childhood pictures but like their their faces change like you know puberty wreaks havoc but he has one of those faces that he just he looks exactly like you would imagine him too yeah it just looks like
Starting point is 00:16:37 that little boy just grew a bigger body into like a football player body yeah exactly um yeah that that's got to be internet fame that you like you don't get any money for that prior to no he didn't get any money for that he just went through elementary middle and high school being that popeyes kid that would be that would be a mess that would be a mess. That would be a fucking mess. I mean, and especially if like you know, who knows if you can hold your own shit down if kids are trying to bully you and stuff like that. You could see that either being
Starting point is 00:17:14 like a great thing or a terrible thing. But man, the internet age is fucking wild. It's basically like when Michael Cera in Arrested Development was like the, had his they like made a reference to Star Wars Kid, he had his own viral video.
Starting point is 00:17:27 That was earlier in that day. There are worse fast food chains that you could be associated with, I will say that. Better than being Chick-fil-A Kid or Jack in the Box Kid. Whoa. I don't really hate Jack in the Box, I'm just saying. They had some...
Starting point is 00:17:44 I guess it was a while ago but they did have some people pass on due to their food so like that I feel like that would be you know nah alright and then finally Sneetches on some podcast lesser known
Starting point is 00:17:59 podcast than the Daily Zeitgeist called Planet Money I guess oh that's how you say it okay yeah i think that's right i thought it's plaint money but yeah it's uh yeah they had a recent story about economics lessons and kids books and one of the hosts erica barris spent a day in this school in columbus ohio like why these kids learn about math and economics and she brought books that were recommended to her by like economists and other people that said like oh these are good kids books but can also open up
Starting point is 00:18:29 some really interesting ideas about the free market or economic loss etc they sit down to read the dr seuss book you know the sneetches uh which you know is a story about segregation if you look if you look right at it you can can kind of understand what the subtext is there. But again, it's Dr. Seuss, and it's meant to sort of tell the kids, we're all special. It doesn't matter what you look like or what you have or don't have. That's sort of the bottom line. So in this piece, the teacher starts reading the book. And the reason we're talking about it is because one of the administrators from the school district interrupts the reading because they say it's getting too political so i just want to play a part in the beginning where you hear the kids being read the book and they start to be like
Starting point is 00:19:13 wait wait hold on this this sounds like a mean world uh and you kind of see this you can kind of see the momentum of children understanding like what it means to have empathy and like all of these other sort of you know life skills and we'll get to the part where then it gets shut down after this katie what did you say you said it felt mean um that's kind of mean because like just because their bellies are plain and they don't have stars and it doesn't mean that they're not special right doesn't mean they're not special noah it's almost like what happened back then how people were treated like uh like disrespected like white people disrespected black people but then they might stand up
Starting point is 00:19:57 in the book so you heard that part where all the kids are like yeah yeah fuck all that shit was a thing yeah and the world was and still is unfair wow wow holy shit no way so this is the part then when this administrator interrupts to be like this is this is not well what are we doing yeah i i don't know if i feel comfortable with this book being one of the ones featured. The Sneetches? I feel like this isn't teaching anything about economics, and this is a little bit more about differences with race and everything like that. And everything like that.
Starting point is 00:20:38 So, do you mind, Mrs. Robeck, if we pause this book? I mean, we have a list here of all the things. This is about preferences, open markets. I just don't think it might be appropriate for the third grade class and for them to have a discussion around it. Are you OK with that? I'm OK with that. OK. So the shit was shut down.
Starting point is 00:21:02 Also, it is important to just note that uh the part that we cut out in between was so after the kids make that observation uh this like kind of grifter dude comes into town in the book so vestor mcmonkey mcbean yeah which i don't know he pointed out his name could have used like some workshop and maybe shortening down but uh anyways he comes in and he's like oh i can use this as a money-making opportunity uh identify a hole in this market and like kind of exploit it so it is like at that point when she's interjecting it is explicitly about economics about capitalism yeah just gotten to the point where it is explicitly about capitalism and how it's not always fair and how it can be like a real dirty business. But like these kids are already thinking about it on this like very advanced level.
Starting point is 00:21:53 Jack, her circuits were fried when she heard all those kids be like, it sounds like the old days. And they're like, yeah, that's when it went like, like smoke was probably coming out of her ears and shit. Like smoke was probably coming out of her ears and shit. She is definitely a viewer of Fox News and right-wing media and was just hearing the talking points and the shouting of, you know, of the people who freaked out when they didn't think the Christmas tree in the public library was big enough or the gift wrapping station wasn't, wasn't prominently featured enough. And they also, I think the administrator is saying like, you know, cause we haven't told parents ahead of time that this would be thematically something that the kids would like using that whole thing. And then like,
Starting point is 00:22:32 it's not the business of the school district to suppress any viewpoints or dialogues. Okay. Well, what you were doing is explicitly suppressing something that is naturally coming up as a point of conversation about a pre-approved list of books. Yeah. That you already approved and then apparently didn't read closely enough or your mind just was not engaging with it on the same level.
Starting point is 00:22:56 Yeah, but this is precisely what people who are so hell-bent on what kids are being taught. This is the fight that they're in because when those kids went, yeah's bad yeah that is the sound they're afraid of that's the world they don't they don't want young people fucking kids to begin to have like a heart or to understand that there can be a a just world yeah you know what i mean like try and dead dead in that sense with them like within them as soon as you can that That way, when they step into the world, they know the fucking program. And yeah, all that panic you see over people being like, my kids are going to learn about racism. Like, it's wild to actually hear it happen like that in a moment like that when you're just reading. I just don't think it's appropriate for them to talk about it in the third grade.
Starting point is 00:23:43 I do think it's appropriate for them to experience the consequences of it in the third grade. Yeah. But we'd rather have that be an abstract power structure that they're operating. They live within and remain unaware of. That's kind of our thing. Interesting. Preparing them for life in America. Well, anyways, good job by that podcast,
Starting point is 00:24:06 Plaint Money. Yeah, Plaint Money. Good job. Good job. Keep up the good work. Good job, though. For real. Alright, those are some of the things that are trending on this January 11th. 1-1-1-1-1. We are
