Listen to Lucha Libre Behind the Mask on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you stream podcasts. How do you feel about biscuits? Hi, I'm Akilah Hughes, and I'm so excited about my new podcast, Rebel Spirit, where I head back to my hometown in Kentucky and try to convince my high school to change their racist mascot, the Rebels, into something everyone in the South loves, the biscuits. I was a lady rebel. Like, what does that even mean? It's right here in black and white in print. It's bigger than a flag or mascot.
Starting point is 00:02:00 Listen to Rebel Spirit on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hello, the Internet, and welcome to this episode of 28 Trends Later. A little teaser for something we're going to be talking about later on. I am Jack. That is Super Producer Becca. Hello. That short show title, courtesy of Super Producer Brian, who will never let you hear his voice on our show, but he will chime in with brilliant observations from the chat. How are you doing, Becca? I'm great. It's a rainy day here in New York City. Feels fitting to be talking
Starting point is 00:02:34 many spooky things. Many spooky things. Talking many spooky things. We're going to talk on tomorrow's Full App about Alec Joan losing all his money and Fox News being mad about on tomorrow's full app about Alec Jones losing all his money and Fox News being mad about it and trying to turn him into
Starting point is 00:02:50 a martyr. But that is obviously something that is still a trend in. But right now, I think we're all talking retro Halloween costumes because I forget where I saw it. I didn't copy the link down because I'm bad at my job. Yeah, okay.
Starting point is 00:03:06 It was on Twitter. Somebody went to Party City and they have an aisle that is retro Halloween costumes. And there's the blockbuster clerk uniform, blockbuster librarian, whatever the blockbuster worker is called yeah but the like blue polo shirt that very specific ugly blue that they rock they had the giant inflatable um old old cell phone uh but one of them is a dress that everyone wore at my high school well it's funny because that dress i feel like has gone viral again, right? Is it back? Girls just wear that. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:03:50 It's like the white tee with like a slip dress over it. Yeah. It was very funny because as someone who was born in the 90s, but like grew up in the early aughts, like looking at all those references for the 80s and 90s aisle, it's just like so so stereotypical but it's like so vague that you're like where is it from and it's like the phone is obviously very um saved by the bell vibes like zach morris iconically would like pull out his phone right or like the slip dress is giving um 10 things i hate about you yes that is the iconic appearance of 10 of that dress is 10 Things I Hate About You for sure. But anyways, there's also some blending that I've noticed happening between 80s and 90s. Like the 80s and 90s have become interchangeable.
Starting point is 00:04:35 Yeah, they've made it very like. With a younger generation. They're the same thing. Yeah. And they very much aren't. But I also don't want to be the person who's like um excuse me respect my childhood sir um i mean it's funny to think that like kids now look at the 90s the way i looked at like the 80s like i was like so like john hughes like i was like trying to be that indie hipster
Starting point is 00:05:00 kid i was like you guys don't understand me 16 candles you know kids look at the 90s that way yeah and you look at the 80s the way i look at the 70s as the way i look at the 30s uh because i'm old as fuck you're like the 80s right with like prince and uh the people doing the charleston and rag time i get it uh it's all just a blur from before you were born. And I get that. And that's the way it should be. You shouldn't have a detailed knowledge of the difference between the 80s and 90s because it's boring. It doesn't matter.
Starting point is 00:05:36 A bunch of bad news for Donald Trump hitting all at once today. So the January 6th committee voted to subpoena him, which I immediately got the fatalistic, well, he's just going to fight that. I don't know what that's going to accomplish. But there's also reportedly an ex-White House staffer
Starting point is 00:05:56 that was caught moving boxes of documents at Mar-a-Lago on camera. And he testified that Trump ordered him to do so, which is not good for Trump. So that combined with the Supreme Court on Thursday denied Thursday. So today the Supreme Court denied a request by his legal team to vacate a lower appeals court ruling in a case related to the FBI raid and seizure of documents. And basically it makes it so that the special master delay tactic
Starting point is 00:06:28 is going to be harder for him to employ. They're basically like, they're not going to allow him to keep being like, but they're my documents, so I need access to them. They are, again, it just highlights that the one Trump appointee local judge that he used to get this special master involved in the investigation is, you know, as legal experts were saying at the time, it doesn't make sense at all, like from a legal perspective, just like it's there's no argument for them to stand on. And I guess the Supreme Court just felt too embarrassed to go along with with that lie. Oh, man. I mean, one day it'll end right in theory. It's so crazy to think that it is October 2022 and this happened January 2021. You know, it'll almost be two years ago soon. That is so crazy.
Starting point is 00:07:29 Man, they're still looking for the missing like tapes from Nixon's White House. Yeah. Like, I don't know the missing five minutes or whatever it is. So I don't I don't have any faith that it's going to end anytime soon. And America keeps getting more fascist but people are saying these two developments cause the likelihood that he is indicted to skyrocket we can only hope yeah so that's intriguing news um there's also some news in the world of horror films uh First of all, Halloween ends the
Starting point is 00:08:07 new final installment. We'll put air quotes around final installment of the Halloween franchise premieres in theaters and on Peacock tonight. So exciting. I don't know. Exciting. I haven't watched any of the new ones, but
Starting point is 00:08:23 people seem to react. I did watch the last one. I think it came out last year, right? Was that Halloween Kills? Yes. Michael Myers Forever. Yeah. I think it's Halloween Kills.
Starting point is 00:08:36 And it was a fun watch. It was super campy. It definitely wasn't scary, which I love the OG slasher films for that reason. Like they're not scary. You're just fun. Yeah, it's like a highlight reel of cool kills using practical effects. Exactly.
Starting point is 00:08:52 And so this one was like it definitely was like one of the worse or of like the Halloween movies for sure. But it was definitely a fun watch like at home during COVID. And I'm excited to watch this new one. I don't know how it's going to end. I can't believe they could not kill him the last time. That was absolutely insane. Spoilers. You know, they lit the whole damn house on fire
Starting point is 00:09:13 and they still couldn't kill him. So, who knows? Their strategy was, let's just burn down the house that he's in. Well, from what I remember, and granted, please do not hold me accountable to this i am pulling this from memory i did not look this up before we started recording i think jamie lee curtis spoilers spoilers jamie lee curtis was like the only way we're gonna kill michael
Starting point is 00:09:36 is if we lock him in the house and we burn the house down with him and so they like lure him back after many people have been slashed obviously at this point they lure him into the house like jamie lee curtis her daughter and her daughter so jamie lee curtis's granddaughter you know it's like a like the husband has been murdered at this point i forgot how by michael myers and like jamie lee curtis's daughter's husband got murdered and they lock him in the house they lock him in the basement and they light the whole house on fire. And they're like, he has to go.
Starting point is 00:10:07 But then by the end, like he wasn't dead. So it's just like, huh? Like how old is he come back? I don't know. So very curious to see how it goes. Um,
Starting point is 00:10:19 I, it's going to be fun, but you know, I don't know. Yeah. That feels, that feels like, I don't know yeah that feels that feels like i don't know only only a
Starting point is 00:10:26 horror movie protagonist would have thought that was a good way to approach approach it with someone who dies multiple times but the second you don't have eyes on them their body's gonna disappear and he's gonna show up again wait i do think i messed that up i think this that was the one that i think came out in 2019. Got it. And then another one came out during COVID. I don't remember. I do remember. How they,
Starting point is 00:10:49 right. Yeah. I know he came back. Cause they were like, like Jamie Lee Curtis was like, he's back. And then his family was like, we saw him burn.
Starting point is 00:10:55 What are you talking about? He's back. Right. But isn't it like, I remember the teaser for the second one in this trilogy was the fire. Yes. The fire department showing up and being too damn fire departmenty and too damn heroic and going in and being like there's somebody in here
Starting point is 00:11:11 and then just getting all sorts of all sorts of murdered uh a rainbow of murder uh murder tactics but i'm excited i mean it's gonna be fun i'm mad that i have to like i mean i'll probably go see it in theaters because i'm a stan for going to the movie theater um because i'm annoyed that i have to get another streaming service like i already have hulu i already have netflix i already pay for hbo like i simply cannot do peacock peacock is one bridge too far. One bridge too far. I'm tired. Come on, people. Alright, so the next horror movie related story
Starting point is 00:11:52 is AV Club put out a list of five horror movies that they want to see that are stuck in development hell. So they're great ideas, intriguing premises. I don't know how to uh pluralize let's just go with premises uh that they're just premises sounds like we got to get michael myers on the premises and burn it down so we will talk about what those five intriguing premises
Starting point is 00:12:22 are after this break that That's called a tease, baby. Starting point is 00:14:30 When you think of Mexican culture, you think of avocado, mariachi, delicious cuisine, and of course, lucha libre. It doesn't get more Mexican than this. Lucha libre is known globally because it is much more than just a sport and much more than just entertainment. Lucha Libre is a type of storytelling. It's a dance. It's tradition. It's culture.
Starting point is 00:14:51 This is Lucha Libre Behind the Mask, a 12-episode podcast in both English and Spanish about the history and cultural richness of Lucha Libre. Taking better care of yourself is just a click away. And we're back, and I apologize for calling you baby. So there are, yeah, these got my attention. These five horror movie premises.
Starting point is 00:16:47 We got Guillermo del Toro's At the Mountains of Madness, which Guillermo del Toro, Pan's Labyrinth, the movie where the fish man has... The Shape of Water. Yeah, has like a weird penis door thing. I think that was my main takeaway. I did just listen to the Bechtelkast episode of The Shape of Water. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:10 Did they talk about the penis door? Oh, absolutely. But what a wild ride. I forgot. Yeah. They say like she just motions that like he has double doors in front of his penis. And then the penis comes out from behind the double doors which is interesting it's not the way i've ever seen a penis work um that movie was green and
Starting point is 00:17:34 the penis thing those are the two things i remember from that um i actually liked midnight alley or uh whatever the fuck the carnival movie was that he just recently did. But people are saying he has long wanted to do the H.P. Lovecraft at the Mountains of Madness. If you're on the internet, you've heard about H.P. Lovecraft quite a bit. He is somebody who was, I think, documented losing his mind as he was writing all this stuff he was also
Starting point is 00:18:07 an anti-semite those things tend to and also very extremely racist uh those those things tend to line up the mental illness and anti-semitism and racism but anyways truly like a horror that can only be drawn up from a mind that is like boiling with disease and you know insanity and people have been obsessed with this for a long time and apparently guillermo del toro has long wanted to do it i say give this man the 150 million dollar budget that has reportedly been rumored around this project and just get the hp lovecraft out our systems hopefully it is a beautiful failure like many of his movies and we can just sit back and be like okay i get it i see why you guys were into this a piece of art like if it's guillermo del toro it's gonna be like art and i get it's gonna be expensive but i want to die for the craft you know
Starting point is 00:19:06 yeah like i want some real art out there there you go um freddy versus jason versus ash uh so basically be a crossover between the worlds of freddy jason and then ash from the evil dead army of darkness universe um which is you know the horror movies that kicked off Sam Raimi's career. And it would just be like kind of a fun return to form for him. Yeah. In my mind, it could be, could be fun.
Starting point is 00:19:36 It could be, you know, he does really campy, really fun, really bloody horror. Well, and just bringing, bring all those elements together
Starting point is 00:19:45 could be fun. I'm excited. 28 months later. The other reason we're talking about this is like horror movies are the thing that is working at the box office right now beyond superhero movies. There's some really good horror this year in a way that I feel like I haven't seen in a long
Starting point is 00:20:02 time as someone who enjoys watching spooky things enjoys horror my dad's a big big big horror buff um so i grew up in a horror household so to speak but um and nothing scares him it's like kind of off-putting that's good that's good dad energy i'm like why doesn't anything scare you um but yeah i feel like this year I've seen some real off-putting shit come to the box office in a good way. Right. You know, I'm shocked so many good things seem to be in development
Starting point is 00:20:31 hell. 28 months later, so we got 28 days later, was the first Fast Zombies movie from Alex Garland, was the writer who went on to direct Ex Machina and Annihilation, This Year's Men, which we were just talking about.
Starting point is 00:20:50 None of us have seen it, so we won't talk about it. But apparently he and director Danny Boyle have an idea for a threequel, which 28 months later, I mean, who knows what could happen in 28 months? It's a long time. That's over two dang years. That's right. Like, it does feel like, you know, Super Producer Brian was saying, like,
Starting point is 00:21:12 that feels like something Alex Garland would not do. He's become one of the most exciting filmmakers working, and it feels weird for him to be like, and now I'm going to go back to this genre movie that got me my first directing job in the first place, working and it feels weird for him to be like and now i'm going to go back to this genre movie that got me my first directing job in the first place but could also be fun maybe maybe a fun light romp for him so that's intriguing there's a stephen king short story that's called the jaunt i have not read it i was published in 81 but apparently it's one of people's favorite short stories by him.
Starting point is 00:21:46 I do really enjoy a Stephen King short story. It's a, he's good in that link at that length, but this one's an unsettling take on teleportation across the stars. I will just say the fact that they adapted the phone novella from last year, it's called like Mr. Something's phone. And it's about a magical,
Starting point is 00:22:09 uh, mobile phone that like goes, gets buried with an old man. And then like, it, it's, it was a fun read, but it was definitely a read where I was like,
Starting point is 00:22:22 well, not all Stephen King things are worthy of being developed into films but they went for it. It's apparently a show on one of the streaming services right now
Starting point is 00:22:37 and then they have a Peter Jackson Nightmare on Elm Street movie that I'm not familiar with but an accomplished filmmaker going back to a defunct genre of
Starting point is 00:22:53 just a straightforward Nightmare on Elm Street movie could be fun. I'm here for it. Me too. These all seem fun. Are you Freddy or Jason? What's your what's your i think i'm freddy yeah freddy's fun he's funky yeah jason's doesn't have that many good lines
Starting point is 00:23:17 in my experience um yeah and then finally uh last story silk Silk Sonic has bowed out of the Grammys after cleaning up at the Grammys. Last year. Yeah, last year. Yeah. So basically what happened is this is Bruno Mars and Anderson.Paak. They teamed up, made this 70s, funky, sexy album. They released a single for it
Starting point is 00:23:45 ahead of last year's Grammys, and that song just won all the awards. And so in anticipation of the fact that they are going to win all the awards again for the album, they were just like, we're going to not? I don't know,
Starting point is 00:24:01 but I thought the quote was really funny. They reported to Rolling Stones, we truly put our all on this record, but Silk Sonic would like to gracefully, humbly, and most important, sexually, bow out of the submission of our album this year. And I thought that was great. Well done.
Starting point is 00:24:18 Well done, Silk Sonic. Alright, those are some of the things that are trending on this Thursday afternoon. We are back tomorrow with the whole last episode of the show. Until then, be kind to each other. Be kind to yourselves. Get the vaccine. Get the flu shot.
Starting point is 00:24:32 Don't do nothing about white supremacy. We will talk to you all tomorrow. Bye. Bye. I'm Jess Casavetto, executive producer of the hit Netflix documentary series, Dancing for the Devil, the 7M TikTok cult. And I'm Clea Gray, former member of 7M Films and Shekinah Church.
