Starting point is 00:00:00 Hello, the internet, and welcome to this episode of Afternoon Desight. Ah, that is courtesy of Aaron Winking, a.k.a. E-Wink. Hey, thanks for the a.k.a. Yeah, I think he did the Desightly News with Miles Brokaw, and I gave credit to another person, so my bad. Oh, wow. I know. Miles, there are four things trending right now that the people need to know about. Okay.
Starting point is 00:00:32 Potentially five, actually. Okay. So let's just tick through them real quick. Chick-fil-A, hashtag Chick-fil-A. Yep. What'd they do? They, I think, have said officially they're no longer giving money to anti-LGBTQ groups. Okay.
Starting point is 00:00:47 So, okay, fine. Is this the first time that we've seen, like, I've heard of change being affected through, like, a Bernie Sanders will make Hillary move left on things. Right. Is this the first time we've seen that effect from just a really great chicken sandwich from Popeye's? I think so. Yeah. It must be. Because they are screwed.
Starting point is 00:01:07 I think they, I mean, but when you think about the health of their business, clearly that wasn't a concern for most consumers based on like how aggressively Chick-fil-A is expanding and how well their business is still doing. But I think maybe they're just sort of like, how do we remove every barrier to entry for people to like use our brand? And if that means we have to not give to people who are going to tell you that, you know, being an athlete through Christ is the way to avoid the,
Starting point is 00:01:28 you know, the, the fruits of the devil. FCA man. Yeah. I was, I was one of them back in the day. Fellowship of Christian athletes.
Starting point is 00:01:35 Yeah. Yeah. In Kentucky, that was the best run after school. And. What do you mean it was the best run? It was the best like pickup game. Oh really?
Starting point is 00:01:42 Yeah. And it was the only one that was like at my school's gym. By virtue of, by default. Me not being able to drive anywhere else. I mean, yeah, I think it's good for them. I think before they- Fellowship of Christian Netflix? No, no, no.
Starting point is 00:01:54 I was just saying back to Chick-fil-A. There's some dark ass things. Well, yeah, those stories you told us were quite jarring. But I think with them, at first, i think the company proper was donating and then like we stopped doing that but the foundation was still giving so now i think they've completely ceased right which shouldn't have been that hard of a thing to do yeah i think towards the end it wasn't that much money but hey you know what good all right move move with the culture but uh the popeye sandwich is still better it is is. Better than any chicken sandwich
Starting point is 00:02:25 I've ever tasted. High hopes. Breaking your mother's heart. I know. Even mine. I didn't say chicken salad, ma. High hopes is trending. That is the song that
Starting point is 00:02:42 people dance to in a manner such as in accordance with what the team buddha judge was doing yeah the pete summit the pete summit yeah what the fuck is that it is i don't know i think it's uh just in general it looks like a group of like his organizers or maybe were gathered um i think that's not really as relevant as like it was look one of his staffers a buddha just staffer uh was showing that from this i guess over the weekend they had a pete summit so it was a lot of supporters doing this panic at the disco song dance and the choreography i mean watch out jabberwockies yeah we were just talking about
Starting point is 00:03:24 y'all but uh team buddha judge might be coming for your neck with some of these moves. They were waving their hands. They were clapping. Yeah. All in line. Yeah. I mean, good on y'all. Was there music?
Starting point is 00:03:37 Oh, there was music. Oh, I couldn't even hear the music. It was High Hopes. Oh, okay. It was just so weird to be like, High, high hopes are living. And just doing like, it looked like an aerobics class at a convalescent home.
Starting point is 00:03:48 That's exactly what it looked like. Because the choreography, look, credit's in. They could move a little better than that. Some people had, look, some people definitely had honey in their hips when they were doing it. And others looked like they were getting their exercise. Yes.
Starting point is 00:03:59 It was among, there's some of the weightiest dancing I've seen since a Phish concert. And a lot of people are just taking the time to absolutely flambé the people in these videos one person just said Trump is going to be
Starting point is 00:04:11 president for 100 years fuck Team Buttigieg baby the yeah high hopes high hopes Al Moore was trending and he had
Starting point is 00:04:23 a fire takedown of superheroes in popular culture, basically. That sounds like, I don't know if Damon Lindelof read his takedown of superhero culture when he was making this Watchmen show for HBO. Because it anticipates a lot of these critiques. Alan Moore says, I think that a good argument can be made for D.W. Griffith's Birth of a Nation as the first American superhero movie and the point of origin for all those capes and masks. Wow. And he's basically talking about how there's like sort of a not subtle undercurrent of white supremacy coursing underneath a lot of superhero films. Look at all these master race super strong dudes.
Starting point is 00:05:13 Yeah, who just come in and save us all from our problems. We don't have to do anything. We just look there, stand back and look grateful. I mean, Lindelof was convinced that Alan Moore had cursed him. Oh yeah. Because he was just like, I don't know what it is. I just felt that things, I was feeling a certain way and I could feel Alan Moore's disapproval wash over me. Yes. And he's like, I could also just be completely delusional and self-centered and try to assume that the feelings I'm having are because one person is so obsessed with me. Right. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:05:46 Walmart Black Friday ads is trending. Yeah. It's time. Everybody's dropping their Black Friday ads. Everybody. Do you ever do this? Do you ever go out and hit the stores? You seen this?
Starting point is 00:05:57 I remember I tried in high school when that shit was like, get a flat screen TV for $40. And flat screen TV was like $9,000. So I was like, yes, bro. Let's go go uh went there the shits were gone because there's only like two right um and then after that i was like nah i also just don't like i'm just not good at like knowing when to buy shit like i'm pretty much like oh yeah i like that i never like look forward to black friday i'm like okay i need a motherfucking USB battery. I need a fucking bunch of HDMI cables and shit like that. Everybody take note at home. Yes.
Starting point is 00:06:30 This is what Miles does. This is what I like. I like a lot of external batteries and HDMI cables. And I just like to collect them. You never know when someone's going to need it. But yeah, everybody is doing wild sales, which is funny because isn't it like the thing with Black Friday is that it's like the sale really isn't that much of an actual sale. Like it's just the illusion of one. Right.
Starting point is 00:06:50 Based on how they make money off of it. The origin story for like the naming of Black Friday, which I think is. I'm getting verklempt. Sorry, guys. I just get really emotional when we're talking about Black Friday. The origin story is that, you is that you write down losses in red and when you start making a profit, it's in the black. And so that's what brings stores into the black. So even if that's almost definitely apocryphal, that is still... Most people have
Starting point is 00:07:19 heard that. So why would you think you're getting a deal when this is where they make their money and start profiting? It's like, yeah. Basically, the whole idea is they get a lot of foot traffic by bringing a lot of people in for these deals, but only a couple people get the deals. Yeah. Well, you know, Claire's is having a sick sale. I will say that. If y'all need some magnetic earrings like i used to get you get you some at claire's just the stud like uh what's his name and uh righteous gemstones yeah exactly just you you want if you want to surprise an ex let's do that slow reveal like i'm different now
Starting point is 00:07:57 and you got that little dangle cross earring i really my ears my ear piercings i still i think still work i was trying to check them annually. Oh yeah. I think, you know, if when this show becomes massively popular and I'm wearing just only gold jewelry, right.
Starting point is 00:08:11 I will be wearing a dangle cross earring. Yeah. Like the Barry Bonds of podcasting. Okay. Without the HGH. I was going to say George Michael, but either way. Oh,
Starting point is 00:08:18 my book doesn't look that good in jeans. Right. As we've all seen. I have what they call mum bum. Mum bum. Um, another thing to watch out for, speaking of myths about Black Friday, the whole,
Starting point is 00:08:30 there were people trampled this year at Walmart. That's overblown story that they know they want to tell that story ahead of Black Friday. They know it's going to be a slow news weekend and they know they want to tell that story. Carnage, baby. They're going to try and tell you that story,
Starting point is 00:08:50 but if you do any follow-up on the story or retweet a story at me, and I'll look and tell you that it's... When you look at the deal Sam's Club is having, $119 for a Respawn gaming chair? Oh, hello. Wait, what the fuck is Respawn? Don't know what the fuck that is.
Starting point is 00:09:07 It's a gaming chair. It looks like it has a weird footrest so you can fully recline. Right. As your arteries clog. Yeah. Okay. And finally, South Dakota, I think, is actually trending. They spent $500,000 on this ad campaign that was supposed to combat meth use in South Dakota.
Starting point is 00:09:27 South Dakota has a meth problem, and the campaign slogan was meth, period. We're on it. Like, we're going to get on this problem ASAP. God. But it just says meth. We're on meth. Yeah. Hold on. Like, how do you fuck this up? But it just says meth. We're on meth.
Starting point is 00:09:45 Yeah. Hold on. How do you fuck this up? The same thing is just South Dakota. We're on meth. Yeah. We're on it. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:10:01 Is it supposed to be like a provocative? I don't know. Or it's like we're tackling it. Maybe they are like, we'll do a campaign or a slogan so bad that people will retweet it. Yeah, like South Dakota, we're chasing the dragon up out of here. Get the fuck out. Right. Every time there's a- South Dakota, your VCRs are safe.
Starting point is 00:10:24 Some ad fuckery like this, I like to think back at the Pepsi campaign, the redesign of the Pepsi logo. Everybody needs to- Oh my God. That needs to be taught in school, in high school. Yeah. Just the leaked documents from that, because it's just such thorough and unmitigated bullshittery from the ad agency.
Starting point is 00:10:45 But it's just. To change the logo as subtly as they did, but use like this backstory of like global connections and shit. Yes. Millennia coming around the sun this time at a thousand revolutions. Yin and yang. Yin and yang. Like what the fuck?
Starting point is 00:11:01 Yeah. Oh my gosh. I mean, even like this thing, this photo of like an old rancher, it's just, it looks like an old guy says meth. I'm on fuck? Yeah. Oh, my gosh. I mean, even like this thing, this photo of like an old rancher. It's just it looks like an old guy says meth. I'm on it. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:11:09 That's not fair to him. That's not. Yeah. He didn't he didn't sign up for that shit. Why? Yeah. I really don't understand where they think this works. Right.
Starting point is 00:11:21 I'm really trying to find like the nuance in this i mean i think i think we're right i think that you know they took a look at their audience they were like south dakotans are just jaded media saturated people who are just will need a little wink and nod with their anti-meth message right i mean a lot of people, too, are getting mad. It's like, for that money, they could have opened up rural rehab clinics or treatment facilities. Get a lot of gabapent. Whoever fucking sold them on that shit, wow. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:12:00 Finesse the fuck out of the state of South Dakota. Yeah. finesse the fuck out of the state of South Dakota. Yeah. I mean, all of the con men who pulled off all the great flim flams in the early 20th century just went into advertising. That's now advertising is all those people. Someone was pointing out that this isn't the first weird ad campaign from South Dakota. campaign from South Dakota in 2015, they had an,
Starting point is 00:12:24 like basically an ad that said, uh, why die on Mars when you can live here? And it was an anti-drug ad? No, no, no. It was just to like,
Starting point is 00:12:35 it was for the tourism board or just to invite people to the state. Oh, that their thing was like South Dakota. Why die on Mars? You can live here. Huh? Okay. Yeah. Shout out to South Dakota and whoever is selling them their ad slogans.
Starting point is 00:12:50 That's going to do it for today. Did we ever introduce ourselves? Nah. I'm Jack O'Brien. I'm Miles Gray. Yeah. That's all. That's been us.
Starting point is 00:12:59 That's been us. Have a good evening. We'll be back tomorrow morning. Also, there's going to be a sale on TeePublic starting Wednesday. And guess what? There's going to be a little new merch design in there. Special for y'all. You can get that for 30% off.
Starting point is 00:13:09 And it ain't even Black Friday. Might be my favorite design in a long time. Wow. It might be. Okay. Not saying anything. You didn't have to keep underlining that. Could be.
Starting point is 00:13:22 Fine. Right. Just end it there. Okay. That's the end. But do you think it's good now okay
