Starting point is 00:02:02 Hello, the internet, and welcome to this episode of Arizona Geist Tea. That is courtesy of Johnny Davis, the short show title king. Oh, man. Shout out to Johnny Davis. Dude, Arizona. Must have been tough growing up with that weird name. Mucho Mango. All right, what's the mango one?
Starting point is 00:02:24 That's my favorite Arizonarizona poison drink oh yeah the i i forget but the the green tea yeah those are classics classic classic those are classics hey uh let's talk about what's trending miles zoom is trending yeah because their stock dropped as much as 14.5% this morning. You really hate to see it. I think it was because they're having some security issues that we even noticed on today's recording of Daily Zeitgeist. Yeah. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:02:59 We actually, we should tomorrow for the next episode, we should addition a new service so we can actually do our March Madness of video services to crown a champion at some point. Although that could severely derail the quality of our show. But hey, we're willing to experiment because we have time. But I think with Zoom, yeah, there was a lot of encryption
Starting point is 00:03:18 things that we talked about in the past that people were sort of being like, oh, it's not actually that safe. And then when a few major companies and school districts, like the New York City Department of Education was just like, we're not using it anymore. It's done. Do completely avoid using it.
Starting point is 00:03:33 And other companies turned their backs on it. That made them, I think a lot of people were like, Zoom is about to inherit the earth. And now with some people, it looks like the school district is going to microsoft teams so a new player has entered or they've been around i guess but i know a lot of people use it that is the official platform for uh our work meetings is microsoft teams but we've been
Starting point is 00:03:57 for our recordings because most people are on zoom been using using Zoom. Yeah. And there was also the issue with Zoom bombing, with people just showing up in Zoom meetings uninvited and ruining them. So they started requiring a password for all of them, except you can still just click on a link, which seems confusing to me. I don't know. I'm just glad I'm not having to fucking teach a lecture to 200 students i know man class seriously let us know what your favorite video chat app is yeah who's not getting enough love yeah who's not getting enough love exactly miles i implore
Starting point is 00:04:39 i couldn't have said it better we got to try google duo next i've tried that a couple times yeah but we'll see we got there's so many now that name implies that that name implies that it's only two of us yeah unfortunately like you can only get two they kind of messed up with that because you can i think have up to eight people but hey they're working it out boris johnson is trending uh this is a wild one uh he was earlier today moved to the intensive care unit um after being hospitalized over the weekend i think yesterday right it's like only like a day just yesterday yeah um after so he had announced he had coronavirus like 10 days ago and hadn't really gotten any better. And so he was hospitalized yesterday. They're moving him to intensive care today.
Starting point is 00:05:33 I feel like there's not a ton of information coming out, but it doesn't seem good. I mean, this is one of those ways that something like a global pandemic can be really destabilizing as one of the world leaders. Right. It's out of commission for sure, and his life is in danger. So that's really, really scary. No matter how people in the UK feel about him, that's got to be very kind of surreal and unnerving. That's got to be very kind of surreal and unnerving. You know, when it happens, again, I think this is what's frightening about the entire coronavirus is that it doesn't matter what class, your socioeconomic class, geography, it can find you.
Starting point is 00:06:24 And I think that's what's really, really, really the unnerving bit for anybody looking at it. Because in your mind, you'd be like, no, there's no way like world leaders like right aren't they around like other humans who like they wouldn't dare let someone who could be ill around them and you're like oh wait it doesn't it doesn't work like that and people who can be asymptomatic and still get other people sick having a security detail will only put you in more danger, really, from the standpoint of what would the chain of command be in a democracy if he is out of commission for a long time, who is calling the shots? Is it going to make it more likely that there's unrest? And just overall, I feel like it's got to be,
Starting point is 00:07:04 regardless of your politics kind of a weird situation uh fortunately the queen stepped in and just told everybody stiff upper lip boom done i think that weirded people out more than anything it was like wow they were saying it was kind of reminiscent of world war ii i'm sure uh yeah in the sense that they that was the last time they really like had an address like this it also seemed like the the quality of the video was sort of it seemed like it was from a bygone era a little bit potato quality as we say on the internet yeah a little bit like not it wasn't it didn't look bad but it just looked there there's something not up to her majesty the queen or
Starting point is 00:07:45 something right you'd expect a little more production value coming out of the windsors yeah i might have just seen a bad cut um we're talking so la now i don't know man i might have seen a rough before they actually locked picture on that so was it 4k what do you what do you hold on dude wait was this color corrected you didn't have wait hold on you didn't even put anything on in davinci okay well then why am i even looking at this so uh mrs kintner mrs kintner is trending uh that is the character from jaws who walks up to chief brody and slaps him whose whose son is eaten by the shark when he's on the raft in one of the very early shark attacks from the movie.
Starting point is 00:08:36 And yeah, I mean, I feel like Jaws just ingests... So Mrs. Kentner, uh, passed away from, uh, coronavirus and, uh, yeah, just yet another shoot. She was in her nineties, but you know,
Starting point is 00:08:54 yet another really sad, uh, loss of life. So many people, man. So the father of like Winton and Branford, Marsalis also passed away. It's really something. it's really odd because it feels like every day I'm almost like okay I'm gonna brace myself to read about some like
Starting point is 00:09:12 elderly luminaries passing on some level I mean not that maybe you know the actress here isn't you know a legend but I mean nonetheless very uh popular pop culture culture. But yeah, it's like a real, like we were saying, it's like Jaws might be like the best metaphor for this whole thing. Movie of all time. Oh, right. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Metaphor for this thing.
Starting point is 00:09:36 Yeah, no, it does seem like Jaws is having kind of a weirdly a moment for, which is strange for a movie that's so old, but just the idea that the central conflict in that movie uh for the first half of the movie is trying to get a politician to pay attention to a problem uh that is uh literally eating people uh off the shore of his and then you know trump coming forward and being like the the churches will be open on Easter was very reminiscent of the beaches will be open for the 4th of July. And then there's also a Georgia politician who literally said the beaches will be open soon, like was trying to open the beaches on a Georgia coastal community.
Starting point is 00:10:22 Cut to. And people are like, dude dude what are you doing governor kemp reopening the beaches maybe just a big jaws fan yeah and finally karen is trending yeah uh why is karen trending miles there is a tweet i'm assuming it's from this tweet friends of journalism that i don't even it reads like a parody account it's like so liberal that like i don't know if they realize like that they're coming off like the dad and get out uh but they posited this question on their page that said quote now i don't know if this is the origin but certainly it's trending because of this type of question that has been posited. Again, this poll asks,
Starting point is 00:11:05 the term, quote unquote, Karen, is being used as a sexist and racist slur. Considering this is an equivalent of the N-word for white women, should it be banned on Twitter? If no, explain. Now, again, many people immediately groan the second you even begin to compare these two words. I don't think,
Starting point is 00:11:27 I think most, I think, no, I'm going to assume all of our listeners are smart enough to know that Karen has absolutely no comparison to the word, the N word, uh, precisely because the fact that you can type the word Karen out,
Starting point is 00:11:39 uh, and not get flamed. Right. Uh, and I think that's what a lot of people are saying. It's like, okay, well,
Starting point is 00:11:44 but you didn't type out the N word, but it's the same thing. So what's going on? And I think just even beyond that, the origin, really a lot of people began describing this thing, whether it was shorthand on like internet message boards or people talking about their work experiences,
Starting point is 00:11:58 but a very specific kind of boomer, baby boomer woman, typically white, who is just completely living in a world of entitlement at the expense of whoever is around them and makes demands and will even cause trouble for people, especially people who are maybe in a lower class, particularly working class people. And just a general attitude that we've seen from people who like to call the police on black people having a cookout, or maybe just someone who's, you know, that can I speak to the manager energy is sort of what the whole Karen debate is.
Starting point is 00:12:33 But the thing that's really funny is seeing all the people just the trend. The reason it's trending are all the people just laughing at how absurd this question is. There are very few people who are like, you know, genuinely being like, like yeah we good thing we're talking about this we really need to talk about it most people are just like right responding with fantastic jokes fuck all the way off yeah it's very frustrating to me that that i mean that's being yeah i mean people have to create narratives about oppression for themselves especially if they become aware that they might be in a dominant group that are the perpetrators of oppression. So to be able to pivot real quick would be like, well, actually, I read about all this terrible systemic racism, but let me tell you about how my feelings are hurt when someone says, Karen, that's actually just as bad so in a way like yeah let's ignore whatever power i might have to fix a situation or my hand in something and let's focus on me being a victim uh and i think you know yeah it's it's it's a it's a quick way to try and act like all these people are being mean to you or
Starting point is 00:13:37 your way of looking at life i just do want to read a couple tweets from people um who responded uh on this main thing uh liz jenkins who is a comedian uh she tweeted out it's just like a meme of chelsea peretti from brooklyn 99 with like her headphones on just like dancing with all this shit going around her and she says gold all in my chain gold all in my ring gold all in my watch don't believe me me. Just watch Karen, Karen, Karen. Everybody's just replacing rap lyrics with Karen. And it's pretty hilarious and just like all
Starting point is 00:14:12 the other things. But yeah, the internet still undefeated. Alright, that is what is trending this Monday afternoon. Miles, it's been a pleasure talking to you today. Likewise. Guys, it's been a pleasure talking to you today. Likewise. Guys, it's been a pleasure talking to you guys.
