Hello, the internet, and welcome to this episode of Baja Blast from the Past, starring Trendon Frazier. That is courtesy of super producer Brian Jeffries. I am Jack, and I am thrilled to be joined today by the original super producer,
Starting point is 00:02:22 one of the greats to ever do it, super producer, Anna Hosnia! Okay, stop it. Stop that. What's up? How are you? I'm not as high energy as you. I know. Well, this is where I get all my energy out and then
Starting point is 00:02:45 i'm just like dead for the rest of the day that is true notoriously the first thing i noticed about you is that you really turn it on on mic and then in all meetings you're like let's start the meeting god if i was that way all the time i would be like i don't know i would just not like myself i think yeah but it's like extremes though you're extremely full of energy or you're extremely the most tired person i've ever seen in my life i'm not even joking since day one it cracked when i met you i used to be the most tired person of all time but that was back before i stopped doing bad stuff that made me very tired I see okay you don't do anything anymore? I do nothing I do coffee before we record
Starting point is 00:03:29 that gets it done doing some coffee alright these are some things that are trending here on Friday afternoon Derek Chauvin is trending as is 22 and a half years because that was the sentence handed down seems like it should be
Starting point is 00:03:49 more for killing an innocent person uh slowly on camera as people tell you to stop but i don't know people who pay attention to this sort of thing seem to be like, okay, all right. Makes sense. Still feels, I don't know, like an insult. Uh, yeah. You know,
Starting point is 00:04:15 that and a half is really where the justice comes in. Right? Yeah. He was like, I was going to give you 23 years, but, uh, you wore a suit today and you seem like you remind me of my cousin. So I'll give you 22 and a half.
Starting point is 00:04:28 I mean, I think the worst fear is that he gets out in what, like 10 years for good behavior and then proceeds to rejoin another police force because the regulation is still not there to stop. Regulation is still not there to stop cops who clearly have done very evil, dark things like murder can easily just go join, just move to a different town and join another police force. So we actually do need to start regulating that right now. So people who have done stuff like that can't just go join another force and sweep it under the rug. another force and sweep it under the rug. Almost like the only people who we allow to have guns and kill people with impunity without really even investigating them should have to go to college for a couple years, like to police college or something, like some sort of specialized training the way that doctors do, who are other people who we put in charge of life or death decisions. I don't know just a thought just
Starting point is 00:05:27 a thought or make it exactly like police academy in the movies uh because that place was a laugh riot um well speaking of you liked that huh yeah speaking of police academy uh a movie with a similar number of entries f9 just came out um it you're going to see it uh tomorrow i believe is that correct yes i am honey look i have been a fast and the furious hey from the start when it was Fast and the Furious, before they even dropped the words. Right. I've been there since day one, driving my Supra into the theater to watch, just destroying buildings, just really with my Nas foot on the gosh darn gas pedal. I love it. Love everything about it.
Starting point is 00:06:22 I love family. I love how every villain is somehow related to Vin Diesel. I just, I love it. Love everything about it. I love family. I love how every villain is somehow related to Vin Diesel. I just, I love it. The only person whose family has a rockier history than Vin Diesel's is you, since your family is always missing, as people know. Okay, here's the thing. You guys have really, like, that's my bit, okay? If y'all continue to steal my bit you'll hear i'm giving you lawyers who are also missing okay so back off only i'm allowed to talk about my family missing
Starting point is 00:06:53 everyone knows that apologies uh what is your favorite of the fast film in the fast franchise um i believe five where they like pull the that giant box through brazil and like destroy rio is that what it is yeah i forget i think that's one of the best movies of the last 30 years i mean incredible work every so good it so uh scott mendelsohn who i like the forbes movie writer was like what if the police academy franchise which is probably why i had that in my mind uh suddenly like the fifth police academy movie was just like an amazing work of art he was like that's what fast five was it was like he he said it's like one of the five best American action movies of all time. It's incredible.
Starting point is 00:07:46 I would be hard pressed to disagree with him. But I think there's been other like six, seven. They were all good. Yeah. But five was just like a masterpiece in absolute destruction of a town and then just like walking away from it. Yeah. And they're what? Brazil who? Brazil who?
Starting point is 00:08:06 Brazil who? Yeah, the amount of collateral damage in Fast Five is record breaking. Mm-hmm. The part where they show people milling about in a bank lobby and then a massive safe just like smashes through and like takes out the entire side of a building uh probably i believe this is the same one um where paul walker uh rest
Starting point is 00:08:38 in peace um and vin diesel are literally like surfing a car at one point that's like flying through the air. You got to go watch it. There's so much going on. What an amazing franchise. Truly. So the reason I was so excited about F9 is that they brought back just like wild ass
Starting point is 00:09:05 like car stunts that are just like straight up physics like the safe because they have like now there's like a magnet in the car which seems fun but apparently not as good as not not one of the better outings
Starting point is 00:09:22 for the fast franchise so I don't know people are just saying it's like a little bit lesser less than i i'm not gonna talk shit about it until i see it that's who i am gonna talk shit about before i see him jd vance author of hillbilly elegy so i knew like he was kind of like conservative ish, but he apparently in response to, so there was this clip that we played on a episode earlier this week where a U S general was like,
Starting point is 00:09:57 I want to read about white rage to find out why, you know, a bunch of angry white people attacked this building. He was testifying uh before congress and uh jd vance was like i think you should study books about like winning battles and pay less attention to white rage whatever that is so jd vance uh in addition to having written just a shit book and hillbilly elegy, uh, is dick. Um,
Starting point is 00:10:28 not cool. Uh, white rage personified and white privilege. Uh, another thing that's trending is dragon man. This is a skull that was discovered in a well. It was apparently discovered 80 years ago and then rediscovered just recently where it had been thrown in a well. And they think it's a separate species.
Starting point is 00:10:56 This is my least favorite type of science reporting because they it's like an intentionally misleading headline that makes it sound wild. Like I, I was picturing like there must be some weird feature of the skull that like is, um, dragon like, uh, but it's just like a bigger human.
Starting point is 00:11:21 Um, but they are much bigger and, uh, kind of, kind of interesting there was a version of humanity that was larger than we ended up being so dragon man just has like a very tough brow yeah very tough brow. Strong brow line. Yeah. Huh. Yeah, you know, this just seems like an early person. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:11:56 It's not different from what we picture early person to look like. All right, let's take a quick break, and then we'll come back and talk about the new Halloween Kills trailer and residential schools. We unfortunately have an update there. How do you feel about this? Hi, I'm Akilah Hughes, and I'm so excited about my new podcast, Rebel Spirit, where I head back to my hometown in Kentucky and try to convince my high school to change their racist mascot, the Rebels, into something everyone in the South loves, the Biscuits. I was a lady rebel. Like, what does that even mean?
Starting point is 00:12:31 The Boone County Rebels will stay the Boone County Rebels with the image of the Biscuits. It's right here in black and white in print. A lion. An individual that came to the school saying that God sent him to talk to me about the mascot switch. As a leader, you choose hills that you want to die on. Why would we want to be the losing team? I'd just take all the other stuff out of it. On segregation academies, when civil rights said that we need to integrate public schools,
Starting point is 00:12:59 these charter schools were exempt from that. Bigger than a flag or mascot. You have to be ready for serious backlash. Listen to Rebel Spirit on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. When you think of Mexican culture, you think of avocado, mariachi, delicious cuisine, and of course, lucha libre.
Starting point is 00:13:22 It doesn't get more Mexican than this. Lucha libre is known globally because it is much more than just a sport and much more than just entertainment. Lucha Libre is a type of storytelling. It's a dance. It's tradition. It's culture. This is Lucha Libre Behind the Mask, a 12-episode podcast in both English and Spanish about the history and cultural richness of Lucha Libre. And I'm your host, Santos Escobar, the emperor of Lucha Libre. And I'm your host, Santos Escobar,
Starting point is 00:13:45 the emperor of Lucha Libre and a WWE superstar. Santos! Santos! Join me as we learn more about the history behind this spectacular sport from its inception in the United States to how it became a global symbol of Mexican culture. We'll learn more about some of the most iconic heroes in the ring. This is Lucha Libre Behind the Mask. This is Lucha Libre Behind the Mask. Listen to Lucha Libre Behind the Mask
Starting point is 00:14:07 as part of my Cultura Podcast Network on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you stream podcasts. I'm Dr. Laurie Santos, host of the Happiness Lab podcast. As the U.S. elections approach, it can feel like we're angrier and more divided than ever. But in a new, hopeful season of my podcast, I'll share what the science really shows, that we're surprisingly more united than most people think. We all know something is wrong in our culture, in our politics,
Starting point is 00:14:38 and that we need to do better and that we can do better. With the help of Stanford psychologist Jamil Zaki. It's really tragic. If cynicism were a pill, it'd be a poison. We'll see that our fellow humans, even those we disagree with, are more generous than we assume. My assumption, my feeling, my hunch is that a lot of us are actually looking for a way to disagree and still be in relationships with each other.
Starting point is 00:15:02 All that on the Happiness Lab. Listen on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you listen to podcasts. MTV's official challenge podcast is back for another season. That's right. The challenge is about to embark
Starting point is 00:15:22 on its monumental 40th season, y'all And we are coming along for the ride Woohoo, that would be me, Devin Simone And then there's me, Davon Rogers And we're here to take you behind the scenes of Drumroll, please No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no The Challenge 40, Battle of the Eras

Listen to MTV's official Challenge podcast on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:16:15 And we're back. New Halloween Kills trailer has dropped. This is another one, I think, danny mcbride uh production company and it's continuing on with the like people from the original movie like have a personal beef with michael myers so um jamie lee curtis is back but so is um and i this is a piece of trivia I didn't realize, but Kyle from Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, she was the child actress in that movie, and she's back and getting killed by Michael Myers,
Starting point is 00:16:58 I guess is what people do in those movies, just repeatedly get killed I've never seen a Halloween film so you know what not a one no so I'm going to refrain from commenting but love Kyle yeah Kyle's
Starting point is 00:17:18 amazing Real Housewives of Beverly Hills which you know a quick pivot Kathy Hilton her sister has joined the show and let me, you know, a quick pivot. Kathy Hilton, her sister, has joined the show. And let me tell you, she is a goddamn riot. She's so funny. Kathy Hilton? So funny.
Starting point is 00:17:32 Yes. Any relation to Paris? Yes. It's her mom. What are you talking about? Sorry. I'm so sorry. I'm so embarrassed that Jack just has a question.
Starting point is 00:17:40 Jeez. Oh, my gosh. Yeah, no, that's it's her mom. But she's also Kyle and Kim's sister, Kathy, a half sister, but still, you know, raised together. But yeah, no, they she's really funny on the show. She's just like such a strange person literally is drinking a Red Bull in the middle of the night. And everyone's like, why are you drinking a Red Bull? And she's like, what was the Red Bull? and everyone's like, why are you drinking a Red Bull? And she's like, what? What's a Red Bull? Oh, I just thought this was just like some fizzy soda. And everyone's like, Kathy!
Starting point is 00:18:11 She's so funny. And she does bits at dinner where she pretends to chug martinis, but she told the waiter to only bring her water. So she's like, everyone's just like, Kathy, stop! Stop chugging martinis! And she's like, no! And then she's getting another.'s just she's a gosh darn riot that was something that
Starting point is 00:18:29 Frank Sinatra used to do apparently is like get really watered down drinks and make people think that he was like drinking a lot and he wasn't just kind of the opposite of how I always was when I drank I wouldn't want people to know how much I
Starting point is 00:18:45 wanted to drink. That's actually pretty cool. Yeah, Sinatra was like, give me a little Coca-Cola watered down so it looks like whiskey. Coca-Cola watered down? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:19:01 I don't want people to know what strong Coca-Cola I drink. Alright. yeah so i don't want people to know how what strong coca-cola um all right and then finally uh we talked uh earlier i think this month maybe last month about residential schools uh which are the canadian uh schools where they would basically kidnap indigenous children and people from indigenous tribes and send them to what was essentially boarding schools, but they would treat them so horribly that it was sexual abuse physical abuse uh and this is something that's just now coming to a head like for some reason it took a long time they were still open and like shockingly recently and we were talking about it a few months ago because they discovered a mass grave at one of the schools and it's back in the news again today because they discovered another unmarked grave this one of 751 people and there's also this is in saskatchewan uh it's also possible that there may have been markings that the catholic church uh who ran the school removed in the 60s this is just one of those things that uh the catholic church
Starting point is 00:20:26 not not not great not not a great look for catholic church oh i would go be honest on a great look i would say pure evil yeah to do such a thing and to um basically disappear these children potentially older than children, teenagers, by just burying them in unmarked graves and hoping to literally just make them disappear and be nobody's problem. It's truly horrifying. Canada needs to really look back on the really, really big problem they've had and still have with residential schools.
Starting point is 00:21:09 They, you know, actually, I guess, and on an episode of Behind the Bastard, it's all about it. If you don't know much about residential schools, I'd recommend checking that out because Robert told me a lot about it. And it's a really dark history that gets hidden under the like classic Canadian stereotype of we're all really nice up here. And it's not OK. You know, we need to be examining such stories in such situations where indigenous children were basically abused and for the most part, murdered. Yeah. There's an Indian residential school survivors and family hotline, 1-866-925-4419.
Starting point is 00:21:52 If that applies to you, if you have any information about residential schools or if you're a victim, 866-925-4419. But just to go back to the catholic church being pure fucking evil uh a catholic priest in uh ontario not far from toronto uh said that people should quote thank the church for the good done in those schools uh recently so they can uniformly go fuck themselves um yeah so that's a horrifying story that's ongoing and we'll kind of keep checking back in with as we learn more about what went on there
Starting point is 00:22:37 that is going to do it for this week uh on daily zeit guys thank you super producer Anna for joining me we are back on Monday with the whole last episode of the show until then oh Anna where can people find you and follow you I am at Anna Hosny on Twitter but I insist don't
Starting point is 00:23:00 at me don't at me dog you can find me on Twitter at Jack underscore O'Brien. Until we meet again on Monday morning, be kind to each other. Be kind to yourselves. Get the vaccine. Don't do nothing about white supremacy. And we will talk to y'all on Monday.
Starting point is 00:23:19 Bye. Au revoir! Au revoir! K hasn't heard from her sister in seven years. I have a proposal for you. Come up here and document my project. All you need to do is record everything like you always do. What was that? That was live audio of a woman's nightmare.
Starting point is 00:23:42 Can K trust her sister or is history repeating itself? There's nothing dangerous about what you're doing. They're just dreams.
