Hi, I'm Akilah Hughes, and I'm so excited about my new podcast, Rebel Spirit, where I head back to my hometown in Kentucky and try to convince my high school to change their racist mascot, the Rebels,
Starting point is 00:01:45 into something everyone in the South loves, the Biscuits. I was a lady Rebel. Like, what does that even mean? It's right here in black and white in print. It's bigger than a flag or mascot. Listen to Rebel Spirit on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hello, the Internet internet and welcome to this very special episode of call it trendo uh what was that from oh no country no country little javier bardem yeah that bad attempt but we'll we'll go with it uh that is courtesy of
Starting point is 00:02:23 somebody whose name i don't have in front of me but i'm jack that's miles yeah. That is courtesy of somebody whose name I don't have in front of me, but I'm Jack. That's Miles. That is courtesy of Anton Chigurh. Yeah. Bubba Andrew Bub. Bub Andrew Bub. Bub Andrew Bub.
Starting point is 00:02:39 Huge fan. Let's talk about some things that are trending. Pop Smoke is trending RIP. He is a 20-year-old rapper who was murdered this morning at a house that he was renting. And it was hours after his friend posted a picture of the two of them sitting in a car with his friend holding a giant stack of cash, and he geotagged it to outside the house where Pop Smoke hours later was killed. So people are speculating that could be what happened,
Starting point is 00:03:21 is that somebody saw the giant stack of cash, saw the geotag, and just went there. Right there right and we're like hey give me all your money and then you know it was like triple x tentacion a burglary that uh turned into a killing man and i i've i didn't listen to a lot of his music but just reading some of these like interviews that have uh that he did before like he sounded like a lot had a lot of fans and seemed like a pretty good dude it's always i mean jesus we're daniel and i were talking like is is it is this it's more than when we were listening like when we were coming up of age during like the hip-hop of the late 90s. I mean, plenty of people were still being killed. But I feel like every other month,
Starting point is 00:04:10 there's someone in the industry who's like either dying from drugs or violence. I think the drugs is fairly new that people are dying. Like I don't remember a lot of rappers dying of drug overdoses when we were younger. Well, I don't remember a lot of rappers dying of drug overdoses when we were younger. Well, it's definitely become a lot of, like, for a lot of the lyrics are definitely sort of glorifying drug use a bit more
Starting point is 00:04:34 than it used to be, like, gang life. Right. But still, Jesus, man, 20 years old. It's just horrible. But, yeah, man, it's been a lot of people in the past couple years. I didn't even – just think from when Nip got shot. Yeah. Wow.
Starting point is 00:04:51 Yeah. Assange is trending. This is based on a pardon that was floated to him possibly from Trump. Yeah. Now, he didn't want anything in exchange for that right he was just like hey yeah it was i look whenever you read something you're like i don't know is this true and then when you read that dana rora bacher uh who's just one of the people that in that in the house of representatives who were like i'm pretty sure this guy's also on putin's payroll that was
Starting point is 00:05:23 like a thing people would always say about him yeah that, that's right. He was a California person who lost recently. And he allegedly went as like an emissary, Trump's emissary to London to speak to Julian Assange and was sort of like, hey, I know that they're trying to extradite you to the United States. How about this? Maybe the president will pardon you if you agree to help cover up Russian involvement in hacking emails from the DNC. Huh? Oh, boy. Huh? When was this?
Starting point is 00:05:57 This was in 2017. Damn. So, yeah, in that first year of the presidency, it was like, yeah, send him over there, go to the embassy and see what you can get out of him. And this is according to Assange's lawyer. OK. Yeah. Which would he have a reason to lie about that? I mean, like, just I'm trying to game it out.
Starting point is 00:06:17 What what the Trump administration like it doesn't it doesn't seem like the Trump administration really needs to deny anything anymore because, like I said, they are just full mask off at this point. Right. Like, you can't do anything. What the fuck are you going to do to stop me? But I'm just trying to figure out, like, you know, in terms of whether we believe it or not, just as rational people with eyes and ears connected to our brains. No, I think this is pretty straightforward. Yeah. eyes and ears connected to her brains. I think this is pretty straightforward. I mean, it was like the motive here for Assange to want to take it
Starting point is 00:06:48 is because of the extradition. But Rohrabacher, I mean, after that, it was reported in other newspapers that he was trying to do this. And then John Kelly was like, get this man as far away from the president as possible. He's like, if this asshole is really
Starting point is 00:07:04 trying to act like he's going to get Assange to help out for a pardon, that makes the whole collusion narrative or facts look worse. Wasn't there a video of somebody visiting Assange at the embassy? Where I feel like somebody connected to the Trump administration, but could be wrong. Anyways, this makes a lot of sense. It's something that people suspected was going on. Yeah. And yeah, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:07:34 The people on the left are like, God, the libs are distracting themselves with all this conspiracy shit about Trump and Russia and stuff. But I think both are right like i i don't think and it's ever gonna bear any fruit for uh for democrats in terms of like on the electoral timetable like i don't i don't think it's ever gonna be a thing where trump gets caught red-handed before the end of his next 30 years term. But over the course of history, maybe, I do think we'll learn that it was just as bad as anybody suspected.
Starting point is 00:08:14 I mean, on paper, if you said that a foreign government was meddling with the election to try and sway the outcome, that would be a chapter in a history book. Oh, yeah. But I think it's tough because there's like two modes where, yes, there's like sort of the, you know, how does our legal system work or not work anymore, but also getting people to motivate in a way that's like, well, that's not tied to most people's existence, which is what I understand on that level. But that's the thing, man, you got so many fucking balls up in the air to juggle uh it's
Starting point is 00:08:45 hard to keep track of everything yeah let's talk about supreme and big hypebeast huh yeah i just i love talking about supreme i know man you're head to toe drip in that supreme drip i mean it's unbelievable nice bogo though thanks to you what is that oh yeah that's like the louis vuitton one uh-huh of course like 20 grand. Okay. Yeah. So the streetwear brand, Supreme, the favorite label of hypebeasts around the world. They have done all kinds of interesting collaborations every season. They've done a brick, a literal brick with the logo on it. They've done little motorbikes. They've done nunchucks, inflatable chairs, you name it.
Starting point is 00:09:27 Like it's all happened. And now I guess we're at that point where they're running out of ideas because this time for Spring Summer 2020 collection, they are collaborating with Oreos. The cookie. Wait, what? Yeah, the sandwich cookie. But they're just going to make the cookie part red and rather than Oreo, it's going to have the box logo Supreme stamped onto sandwich cookie. But they're just going to make the cookie part red,
Starting point is 00:09:45 and rather than Oreo, it's going to have the box logo Supreme stamped onto the cookie. And that will be for sale at a few locations in LA on Fairfax? Or that's going to be in Kroger? No, no, no. It's only going to be in Supreme stores and I'd imagine online. Okay. Look, in the pack, you get three cookies cookies and it costs a very reasonable $8. For what?
Starting point is 00:10:09 For three cookies? So you can put that on your fucking whole shelf with your brick? Hell yeah, dude. All right. Yeah, bro. Hell yeah, dude. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:10:19 You want one, dude? I got them on deck, dude. Dude, for sure. No bots, dude. No bots. I'm copping, bro. All right. And then finally, hashtag cancel Houston is trending.
Starting point is 00:10:32 I just agree with that. Yeah. In general. But I didn't realize. We're talking about the Strohs, not the city of Houston. No, no. Yeah, the Houston Astros. I have a feeling this all started because of Daniel Tosh.
Starting point is 00:10:47 Right. He tweeted, since the MLB commissioner has ruined the integrity of Latin America's pastime, here are some appropriate punishments for the Astros brazen cheating. I'm open to your suggestions as well. So he was saying stuff like batters have to wear shock collars and the opposing team is allowed 10 zaps per inning. Yeah, I like that. I like that because they were allegedly wearing buzzers that were going off to let them know when an off-speed pitch was coming. Some of the people chiming in from the listeners or his followers is great.
Starting point is 00:11:14 Billy Wayne Davis said rename them the Houston Enrons and they have to play all home games outdoors. Then another one was Astros must smoke salvia during the third inning of every game. I can only imagine trying to pick up a bat. That would make every Astros game must watch. The third inning, right when you're on deck, there's a dude there with a little bong,
Starting point is 00:11:41 with a fat bowl of salvia. And as soon as it's your time, like, yo, hit this really quick. Hit this really quick. Right. So then when you get to the plate and you've just kind of shook your shit out, got your feet right, you're like, my bat turned into a sunflower. Yeah. And there's a dragon throwing blood at me. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:11:56 That is what I want to see. I mean, Doc Ellis pitched through a no-hitter on LSD. Yeah. So maybe it would make him better. You got a no-no going, baby. He alsoitter on LSD. Yeah. So maybe it would make him better. You got a no-no going, baby. He also walked nine batters. Yeah. Hey.
Starting point is 00:12:11 The other things he was saying, all Astros players must wear the same child-size uniform as Jose Altuve. The Astros players must open their homes to evacuees during the next six major floods. I like that. I like that. Nolan Ryan has to pitch the first three innings of every Astros game.
Starting point is 00:12:28 And then for the next four years, the Astros have to win every game by two. Yeah. I like that. I like that too. Yeah, the list goes on. Daniel Tosh. I mean, it's really just talking with other Dodgers fans. It's like, what do you do?
Starting point is 00:12:44 Especially that series. The Boston one, I think most Dodgers fans it's like what do you do like especially that series the Boston one I think most Dodger fans are like man we we didn't really we didn't really show up as much as we could have the Astros one fucking straight torture yeah uh and I just yeah there's but it's like what do you do we're not gonna get an asterisked World Series win that doesn't feel good either nobody wins yeah nobody wins yeah it's a wins. Yeah, it's a bummer. So I think, honestly, this would feel a lot better. Right. Like, if every, if the city of Los Angeles could all, like, we could sort of crowdsource punishments that the Astros have to endure for, like, the next three seasons. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:13:15 I would feel good about that. Yeah, I would too. All right. Like, they got to, I'm sorry, just one more. Like, they got to play, but there's but there's a dick hole missing in their pants. Their dicks are just out. Yeah, just out. Yeah, your dicks have to be out.
Starting point is 00:13:30 Deal with that. And deal with the consequences of public indecency and indecent exposure. Yeah, that would be quite a distraction. Or the bats are wiffle ball bats. Right. Just being broken, like trying to make contact with a Major League Baseball. Or the team's got to use aluminum bats against them.
Starting point is 00:13:48 Oh, shit. Or your bat is half the length. They're just those little souvenir bats. Yeah, that actually has the ballpoint pen on the end, right? Got to hit with that, my man.
Starting point is 00:14:00 Yeah. All right, that's going to do it for this afternoon. We will be back tomorrow with another whole podcast. We will talk to you guys then. Bye. Bye. Daphne Caruana Galizia was a Maltese investigative journalist who on October 16th,
