Starting point is 00:00:00 Hello, the internet, and welcome to the Daily Zeitbite, courtesy of Zach Van Nuss. Are we committing to that name? For today. For today, yeah. I think this is very fluid, as people will realize. We're feeling it out, baby. It works. We might burn out.
Starting point is 00:00:18 We might do only two of these and be like, yo, we're already giving these people too much. But Daily Zeitbite, yeah, it's not a professional podcast. It's a third-rate podcast. Yeah, just... Not even second-rate at this point. Levels into the dream we are. Yeah. This is where time moves very slow.
Starting point is 00:00:34 Very slow. This is... My name's Jack O'Brien. And I'm Miles Gray, as you already know that. And this is the quick afternoon episode where we tell you about stuff that was trending that we didn't get to on today's episode. We're going to start off with impeachment. Oh boy.
Starting point is 00:00:52 Jim Jordan and GYM Jordan were both trending. Yeah. I don't know. Is that intentional? That's like a troll move. I think it's a troll move. Wrestling coach. Right.
Starting point is 00:01:02 Yeah. So basically I think he kind of stole the capture people's attention and imagination by being really indignant and bad faith right as news was coming out that from his shadowy past. Yeah. Yeah. Well, I mean, look, he used to work as,, I think, an assistant coach on the Ohio State wrestling team. And last year this came up because the team doctor, Dr. Strauss, was accused of like assaulting like something like a hundred over one hundred seventy athletes. Yes. While Jim Jordan, there was alleged that he knew of this kind of shit that was going on. alleged that he knew of this kind of shit that was going on.
Starting point is 00:01:47 And, yeah, it came back out again because a referee who was, like, reffing a tournament or a match with the wrestling team caught the doctor, you know, masturbating in the shower. While looking at him. Yeah, reported it to Jim Jordan and the head coach, and they were both just like, yeah, yeah, we already know about him. Yeah, yeah, old jerk off in the shower McGee. They're like, yeah, look, we're – Jerks a lot.
Starting point is 00:02:06 I'm going to be a – I don't know why I became a jerky boy there. Yeah, I think he was too focused on his career as being like a tea party troll man. Right. And, yeah, so I think that's one of the reasons that it comes up. But at the same time, his whole impeachment performance was basically like, I'm going to be sniveling the whole time. Right.
Starting point is 00:02:24 same time, his whole impeachment performance was basically like, I'm going to be sniveling the whole time. And when I don't like an answer, I'm just going to give you a real patronizing smirk and then hope that people just interpret my energy as I won the debate. Right. And I mean, Fox News was happy to go along with that. Everybody at Fox News, besides Chris Wallace, was happy to go along with the idea that, well, I mean, they, news besides Chris Wallace was happy to go along with the idea that, well, I mean, they, so yeah, we're on board. The Republicans said it like this. So I guess I saw even a Republican come out after Taylor told the story of how one of his aides legitimately overheard the president on the phone talking about something and they used air quotes around one of his aides legitimately overheard the president on the phone talking about something, and they used air quotes around one of his aides. Okay.
Starting point is 00:03:10 And so, yeah, that's where we're at. It was a little, sadly, I don't know why I was cringing on their behalf. I think because as being a young kid who was very argumentative, there would be moments where you realize you're like, oh, I'm in an indefensible position. Right. And you're like, fuck, maybe I'll just rage out to get out of this. And that's pretty much where they're ended right now. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:03:33 Chris Wallace did say the testimony was very damaging and that Taylor came off as. Well, I mean, he's a deep state plant. So, yeah. I don't know what something must've changed in his heart. Uh, one story, uh, that is coming out is sort of the difference between how the,
Starting point is 00:03:52 uh, Disney plus launch went and how the Apple plus launch went. Uh, so the guy who was in charge of scripted at Apple plus is leaving, uh, two days after the launch. Well, no, it started technically November 1st. Okay.
Starting point is 00:04:07 So I think because their two main shows in terms of their original content that they were really trying to hang their hats on was The Morning Show with Steve Carell, Jennifer Aniston, and Reese Witherspoon. I saw the first episode and I was like, it's a no for me, dog. It's just really, it's tone deaf or me dog right uh it's just really it's tone deaf or not tone it's like there's no tone right i'm not sure what the tone is but it describes it to me and it just seems very strange it was like a yeah it was an odd way to sort of look at a you know clearly steve uh carell is like an analog for matt laauer. Right. But in this one, he's like,
Starting point is 00:04:45 because I'm not a rapist, it's chill. Why am I in trouble? This is so unfair. The whole thing basically just really kind of fell flat regardless of the inner workings of it. But they spent a lot of money. They spent a lot of money. They spent a lot of money.
Starting point is 00:05:04 The other show they spent a lot of money. They spent a lot of money. They spent a lot of money. The other show they spent a lot of money on was Sea, which was Khal Drago. Jason Momoa. Jason Momoa. In a post-apocalyptic future where humans have stopped being able to see, and then somebody is born who can see. Right. And I just, I hadn't seen anything. I saw the trailer, and I was like, all right. That looks like it cost a lot of money.
Starting point is 00:05:26 I remember when we first saw that trailer, though, because it's like warrior shit. Right. We're like, yo, how are a bunch of people who can't see each other going to really get down in a fight? Right. The fights are just going to be comically bad. Just like windmilling in an open field and be like, I'm going to fuck you up, I think. So I hadn't heard anything about how that show was. So I looked up on Metacritic.
Starting point is 00:05:46 It's in the 30s, which is not good. Like out of 100? Yes, out of 100. And Time Magazine's critic had this to say. The execution, particularly in scripts by Stephen Knight, who apparently wrote Serenity, the January inexplicable boat movie with Matthew McConaughey. So the execution is an unmitigated disaster. Not to put too fine a point on it, C is one of the worst TV series I've seen in years.
Starting point is 00:06:17 So that's not good. Okay. Oh, that's not good at all. So Disney Plus, meanwhile, has 10 million subscribers right away. Their stock is way up. So, I mean, this probably shouldn't surprise us because Disney does this for, like, this is what they do. Disney does this. And Apple makes phones.
Starting point is 00:06:40 Yeah. That's the problem, I think. And we were saying the second this started because, remember, we were hearing stories of, like, the process where like writers and stuff were like, we're getting notes back from Apple that don't make sense or like or actually would make the show actively worse. Right. And that's yeah. When you go from making hardware to like content that like needs a point of view, like you can't like kind of be vague and, you know, lean into one and either do it all the way wrong or all the way right they're kind of like half fucking up yeah kind of put it in perspective when they were talking about this they were like kim rosenfeld is the guy's name who left uh they were saying he was like one of their first hires a couple years ago and i was like oh they were building this entire division from scratch yeah they were trying to build an entire studio essentially and i think
Starting point is 00:07:25 also i get having like a big show like that was jason momoa and like reese witherspoon and like aniston to draw people in that'll get you a certain amount but it just pales in comparison of what disney plus was offering people it's like you know your whole fucking childhood right we got that yeah and now like you this is also permanent volume for your kids eyes that you pay seven bucks a month for yeah and 10 million subscribers in a single day yeah that'll do that uh world kindness day was today yeah uh there was a profile of tom hanks not in honor of this but uh just kind of all coalesced around Tom Hanks playing Mr. Rogers. Just a big kindness orgy.
Starting point is 00:08:07 Yeah. So many anecdotes in there. Yeah, it was pretty wild. He's like if Bill Murray was a serially kind person. Yeah, right. It's like, he's not really doing it for the shine. He does it because he wants to be nice and is just a very good, gentle human. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:08:27 There is an anecdote about him buying NPR a new carpet when he showed up, and their carpet was kind of messy. Yeah. Paying for the person behind him in In-N-Out. Once in 2008 when he was shooting Angels and Demons in Rome, a bride and her father couldn't get to the chapel because of, you know, they were shooting a movie there. Oh, like all the production infrastructure? So Tom Hanks stopped filming to escort them to the altar. Once in 2015, he stopped by a table of Girl Scout cookies and bought some boxes, donated
Starting point is 00:09:00 an additional 20, then sat around doing selfies with passersby if they would buy more cookies. That same year, he found a young woman's student ID and stopped everything on his Twitter feed to make sure he could get it to her. And the only bad part was he accidentally doxxed her. Yes. That didn't work too well. She was actually caught for murder. The whole thing, he acts like a person where you
Starting point is 00:09:26 feel like man if i really just got to make like act in films i like to if i was an actor and i'm getting paid millions of dollars i really have nothing to be pissed about shitty about and i would probably at some point maybe feel a little bit guilty that my life is so blessed and easy that the least i can do is pay it forward and that's like it seems like if you were writing like that's his motivation of like right what do i gotta what do i gotta feel bad about i'm tom hanks i don't know man i'm thinking it's uh this is bringing me back to bill gates doing all that good shit and then we find out that he had some epstein stuff some lolita express mileage club paying some karma tax oh tom hanks is a sick sick puppy guys
Starting point is 00:10:07 there's another thing there's another um anecdote about how um he would buy these like two thousand dollar espresso machines for the white house press corps um because when clinton was in office he did a tour and saw the press room and he just saw like how all these like journalists were in there 24 hours a day like really committed to this whole thing and he um this is apparently he has donated i think at least three of these machines um and he wrote this note on his typewriter to the press corps that says quote to the white house press corps keep up the good fight for truth justice and the american way especially the truth part like here's's your $2,000 Liddy espresso machine. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:10:46 It's basically like people compare him to Jimmy Stewart, like being our Jimmy Stewart. It's basically like the moment after in It's a Wonderful Life when he like comes back and it's like, oh, I'm so thankful for my life. I'm going to change everything. But then the rest of us would get tired of that after like four hours. Yeah. Yeah. We get it. Yeah. It's exhausting. Oh, you read The Power of Now. Yeah. everything but then the rest of us would get tired of that after like four hours yeah yeah we're like we get it yeah it's exhausting oh you read the power of now yeah tom hanks is just coming
Starting point is 00:11:09 back to his life after a near-death experience just all the time every day like was jimmy stewart a nice guy in person i don't know i don't know there's a lot of this is all i know about jimmy i feel like there was a charity race named after him. There's a lot of stories about a lot of people from that era that are just very depraved, and you could get away with a lot of depraved behavior. Yeah, with no social media. It's like, yeah, that story will come out in six years. Right.
Starting point is 00:11:39 Once you're able to even identify people from this anecdote. Right. Well, that's the trends of the day. Trends of the day. Oh, I think one last thing we should just add, because we were talking about how well Disney Plus is doing, Netflix had also announced that Netflix and Nickelodeon have created another alliance in the streaming wars.
Starting point is 00:12:02 Multi-year deal to produce original animated features and television series based on their existing IP and new ones. Ooh, that is big. So I think a lot of it, too, is being like, oh, is it the battle for children's eyes? Right. Also, we can play that game. Yeah. The 80s had Call of Wars, and we have the stream wars.
Starting point is 00:12:22 Stream wars are pretty cool. Yeah. Like, there's going to be a lot of- Hey, man, these stream wars are pretty cool. Like that's, there's going to be a lot. Hey man, these stream wars are pretty cool. Hey, and that's a pretty cool. Pretty cool. I've been Jack O'Brien. And I've been Miles Gray.
Starting point is 00:12:32 That's it for the daily Zite Bites, did we call it? Yeah, Zite Bites. Keep sending in your, you know, suggestions. Your title for this segment. Yeah, maybe it'll be a different thing every day. Maybe. But I wonder. You guys can keep running it.
Starting point is 00:12:45 Good luck. Like Zach thing every day. Maybe. But I wonder. You guys can keep running it. Good luck. Like Zach Van Nus. Yeah.
