Starting point is 00:00:05 Jordan Maris. Jordan Maris, welcome to the show. We've got Jarden Maris here today. Good lot. Good, good. Hey, Jardons. I heard you get absolutely steamed down at the old Polkhouse there.
Starting point is 00:00:17 Hello, hello, one, two, three. He didn't hear any of it. Can I hear you? I cannot. Something's going on. Damn it, debased myself again with the hideous accent. I don't know if it's good or not. It's good.
Starting point is 00:00:31 Oh, there it is. Okay. I think it's in a place. All right. What did you think of that, though? How'd you think of this? When we said, Jarden, Mars. Jardin Mars.
Starting point is 00:00:40 Oh, I love it. Oh, yes. Like a kindly Irish policeman. Garda. The guard on his baton. I got picked up by Garda. Even their names for cops are better. You're like, yeah, man, the Garda.
Starting point is 00:00:55 Dude. Yeah. A was, they got Agab over there. Agab. I mean, that sounds fun. I mean, they probably don't say, they probably don't say bastard over there. So that might be aghack.
Starting point is 00:01:11 Isn't the Blarney Stone? Isn't the gift of gab, gift of agab? I don't know. Is there something there? Sure. There's something there. Yeah, a comedian can make something out of that, I think.
Starting point is 00:01:21 And that's what this show is. Justin will just say, I don't know, do something with that premise. Unfortunately, you're working with lesser comedians every day who can do nothing with that. We can write that down and mail it to Theo Vaughn and see if he can. Yeah. Now you're talking about my favorite comedian.
Starting point is 00:01:37 I guess with the... Al-Guardar Kuntz. Kuntz. Al-Gar-Kuntz. Jeff Kuntz, balloons. Gene Kuntz, my favorite author of Airport Thrillers. This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human.
Starting point is 00:02:01 Hey, Portlandia fans. Carrie Brownstein and Fred Armisen here. The Dream of the 90s is alive in podcast form. We're launching Podlandia, AEO rewatch, our brand new podcast where we revisit every episode of Portlandia together, breaking down sketches, going deep on our iconic characters, and pulling back the curtain on how it all got made. And we'll also be joined by the people who helped bring it all to life. Guest stars, collaborators and friends, including director Jonathan Chrysall, the mayor himself, Kyle McLaughlin, legendary musician Amy Mann, and many more.
Starting point is 00:02:31 Kyle is going for it here. You fully improvised, not just words, but a song. Well, I thought you were all going to write a song. I remember you thinking that. Listen to Podlandia, A.A.O. Rewatch on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. What's up, fam? I'm sports journalist Ari Chambers. Hey, what's up, y'all? It's your girl, Sam J. And we're the host of everyone watches women's sports, a new podcast from Together in I Heart Women's Sports.
Starting point is 00:02:58 We're breaking down the biggest headlines. Naomi Osaka, showing out. Shout house to you, Naomi. The viral moments. I've been obsessed with Kashan Rock's boxing journey. She looks good. Her combos are swift. And the stories everyone's talking about
Starting point is 00:03:10 across women's sports. Because everyone watches women's sports. Listen to everyone watches women's sports on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. I'm Nick Tutorough. You probably know me from NYPD Blue, The Longest Yard,
Starting point is 00:03:23 or Spike Lease Black Klansman. And on my new podcast, delivering happiness with Nick Tatourle, I deliver pizza to a new guest. I've shared a slice with everyone from Seth Rollins. What are you doing my belt? To Bill Burr. I don't think I've ever met
Starting point is 00:03:36 somebody so exactly out of their mind as I am. And now we even have more great guests coming up, including the great John Tuturo. It's called happiness. Delivering happiness. And many, many more. Open your free high-heart radio app. Search Delivering Happiness with Nick Taturo.
Starting point is 00:03:52 And listen now. This is Chelsea handler from Dear Chelsea. Every week, the news gets worse. The world gets crazier. And Yamanika is here to tell whoever's responsible, you're the problem. Do you know I just found out who Sidney Sweeney was? If he got a bunch of women, then I should have a bunch of men.
Starting point is 00:04:09 Do better or do less so I don't have to do so much. I'm Yamanika, and I'm out. Listen to you're the problem with Yamanika on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Hello, the internet, and welcome to season 449, episode 5 of Dern Daily Zeit, guys. It's a production of IHart Radio. It's a podcast where you take a deep dive into America. Share Consciousness through the day's news. We have a non-news history version of the Daily.
Starting point is 00:04:39 Zykeyes dropping each Monday morning called the iconograph. We do a deep dive into the zeit guys through the lens of a different icon. This past week we did The Dude from the Big Lebowski. Ever heard of it? Yeah. Probably right? Most people have probably heard of that. It's a fairly big movie.
Starting point is 00:04:56 You're an insufferable man who was born between 1980 and 1992. You better fucking know. You could be plenty sufferable and still love the Big Lebowski. I think it hits our generation hardest, though. It hits our, it hits millennials, I think, at least for people like me, definitely. Give me a roadmap to middle age. Different icon each week. We've recently done Bjark.
Starting point is 00:05:19 We've done David Lynch. Mm-hmm. Magically de Lynch-ish. Mm-hmm. All of those you can find on Monday morning. They never go bad. You can listen to them any time. But here, currently, it is Friday, July 31st, 2026, the very last day of July.
Starting point is 00:05:36 God, damn it. It's already August. God damn it. I thought it was just June. It's National Mutt Day. It's Hawaii Flag Day. It's National Avocado Day. National Raspberry Cake Day.
Starting point is 00:05:50 National Talking an Elevator Day. Yeah. Okay. National Talking Elevator. I mean, for me, the Mutt thing probably rings true. Someone who always adopted Mutt Dog. So just embrace your mixed race dog, you know. Tell him he's just as good as the other ones.
Starting point is 00:06:07 It's just as good as a store-bought shins. My name is Jack O'Brien, aka, if you got low tea, come see me. I can get you a prescription of that Ziosted. My military's got high and testy. That one courtesy of Podmorean trying to do a riding dirty. I should have left that up to the professional. The writing was great. I fucked it up.
Starting point is 00:06:32 But you should have left that up to the professional, the great, weird. who is Monday's icon that we're talking about so you can check out Monday's episode. I'm thrilled to be joined as always by my co-host, Mr. Miles Gray. Hey, it's Miles Gray. The Shogun with No Gun, the Taco Bell lover who is saying, You used to call me on my cell phone, late night when you need to live, Moss. You used to call me on my cell phone, late night when you need to live Moss. And I know now you got hot poopie.
Starting point is 00:07:07 and that could only mean one thing. Okay, shout out to Lackaroni for that one. Doesn't end. You got hot poopie. Who are you talking to in that version of the song? Well, the way Lacheroni wrote it says, I know I got hot poopie, but I'm trying to think of like, I'm, I guess I have the taco bell. You're talking somebody. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:07:31 Maybe you are a talk about delivery person in that. Yeah, I mean, no, no, I was wrong. Lockerone had it right. I am Taco Bell saying you used to call me, but now I got hot poopie. And that could only mean one thing. There it is. All right. Lockerone, one of the greats.
Starting point is 00:07:46 Ever since I ate the lettuce, you. That is what Loccaroni lost that in. Miles were thrilled to be joined in our third seat by one of the funniest people doing it anywhere. One of the hosts of Jordan Jesse Goh. You've seen him on Good Mythical Morning. He's an acclaimed author of comics and graphic novels, Nogles. And also Bar Rescue. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:08:09 Don't forget Bar Rescue. Author of graphic novels Like the Eisner nominated Bubble, the national bestseller youth group, is Jordan Morris. Jordan. Nice. Jordan Morris.
Starting point is 00:08:22 Great to be here. I feel so terrible at how bad hot poopie got me. I'm supposed to be a crowd. You're like an award-winning writer, dude. It was a nice build. It was very similar to, Hotline Bling, but then it paid off with hot poopie.
Starting point is 00:08:40 I got hot poopie. Sure did. And that's how the joke worked. And Miles, thank you for insisting that in the list of my credits that people include Bar Rescue. I think I said this the first time you came on the show. I was like, bro, I remember when you're on Bar Rescue. I mean, some people call it a pivotal episode. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:08:58 I have certainly for me, someone who was so, like, that was my favorite show format, which was a person screaming at idiots who own a business. Like that was Tabitha Salon Takeover, Bar Rescue, or Kitchen Nightmares, favorite shows. So when I was like, bro, this motherfucker been there with John Terrible Boss Taffer. Have you seen the, I don't know how official this is. I'm going to throw it in the chat. Have you seen the new John Taffer merch? No.
Starting point is 00:09:25 And again, he's, he's, you know, probably actually a real piece of shit. Some hot poopie. It's a picture of Taffer pointing at you. this is why your wife left you. I don't listen. I don't want any money to go to this guy, but I do kind of want this shirt. There's no way because this website is already,
Starting point is 00:09:49 you can tell just like the most pop culture, zeitgeist opportunism shirt website. It's called Jimithy Raccoon shirt. Okay, that should have been tip number one that this isn't real. That is on me. So you know what? You can buy it.
Starting point is 00:10:04 Yeah. You're not making Tafford. money. Support Jim is that shop? It's one of his catch phrases? This is why your life left? There have been people whose lives crumble and he's definitely doesn't hold. You know, he's obviously a cruel guy as we saw in the pandemic where he's like,
Starting point is 00:10:17 sure. A starving dog will eat. Don't worry about the wages. You pay them what they can. They don't have a choice to turn you down. That he has like, this is why your wife left you. So it. It feels on brand.
Starting point is 00:10:28 Although it's funny if it's so this is why my life, my wife left me. That is kind of like a fun. The fact that I do this. Yeah. that I'm like this. This is why my life left me. I like a reflective John Taffer. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:10:40 This is probably why my wife left. But that fingerpoint, it's in them. He's looking at the mirror. Maybe I should have had more empathy. Yeah. John Tafford in therapy. Yeah. Jordan, we're thrilled to have you here.
Starting point is 00:10:54 We're going to get to know you a little bit better in a moment. First, a couple of things we're talking about. We are going to just look at the psychology of the Trump administration at this moment. as they are coming to terms with trying to like sort between the lies that they've told versus the lies that they've told and believed. And it just seems like a very confusing place to be. So we'll talk about that. We'll talk about Elon Musk suing Minnesota at the very last moment in a very half-assed lawsuit. And then we're going to talk about shark movies as a sub-genre because we're having a,
Starting point is 00:11:33 It is shark week. It's been shark movie year. Like kind of shark B movie year. And so we're going to talk. We're going to talk above and below the bay. Chum, deep water. Oh, dude, Jack, my kid wanted to watch Jaws last night. What did you do?
Starting point is 00:11:52 He saw the poster like in a scroll of like content. And he goes, Daddy, shark teeth, shark teeth, shark because you know it's that poster. Yeah. And I go, oh, no, no, no. No, it is way more. more of a horror movie than I realized. I just, it was the, I had watched it too many times as a child to realize it. And then I watched it with my kids and I was like, this is a straight up horror movie.
Starting point is 00:12:14 Well, and a movie about the horror is bureaucracy, too. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Well, that is an important lesson that I, I'm glad every kid needs to learn about it. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But I know, suffice to say, I was like, no, bro. I was like, we can look at this video I took of Jack drawing a shark when we were on last week. All of that plenty more. but first, Jordan, we do like to ask our guests.
Starting point is 00:12:36 What is something from your search history that's revealing about who you are? Yeah, I don't know if this has been like, you know, covered ad nauseum on the show. So if this is like old news, please let me know and I can pivot away. But are you all aware of how weird Heathcliff has gotten? No.
Starting point is 00:12:56 Comic strip. Okay, great. I'm glad to, I'm glad that I can help guide you through this. Heathcliff has gotten a strange. So are you actually, are you actually asking? Yeah, we're not being asking. I only know like the eight, my, my memory of Heathcliff ends in like 89, probably. Amazing. Great. I'm glad I can be here.
Starting point is 00:13:17 Okay. So, so Heathcliff, a fairly basic ass newspaper comic strip about a funny cat. Yeah, poor man's version of Garfield. Yes, the hydrox to Garfield. Oh, wait, we're not talking about from Wuthering Heights. Oh, never mind. Yeah, yeah. Miles always has the classy frame of reference. I'm a Bronte boy.
Starting point is 00:13:38 Look at old Bronte boy over here. So, yeah, no. So Heathcliff, the funny cat from the comic strip. So at some point in the past, you know, five or six years, the nephew of the guy who drew it took over. And he's insane. He has just made Heathcliff, you know, know, instead of just a funny cat who did cat puns, it's this like Dadaist kind of adult swim, but weirder, kind of march to insanity.
Starting point is 00:14:12 I'm going to put just the classic crazy Heathcliff here in the chat. A modern day one. This is a modern one. Okay, this is from the nephew. Heathcliff, he's in a car made of ham. He has a helmet that says ham. He's going by a sign that says ham limit 25. And a guy watching him says he's going way over the ham limit.
Starting point is 00:14:35 That's what Keith Cliff is now. What? So it's that. So he's driving a ham. Yeah. Try and figure it out. I fucking dare you to figure it out. It's,
Starting point is 00:14:49 I have no idea. Says ham. Yeah. And he's on a street that has a ham limit of 25. He's going way over the ham limit. Way over the ham limit. So that's kind of what Keith Cliff is now. I'm obsessed with it.
Starting point is 00:15:05 I think it's that thing where you're, you know, when you do comedy, when you write comedy, like, you know, it's that thing when you're just, you're, the neck, the kink isn't enough, right? You just need. So I just can't laugh at, you know, an episode of normal. Yeah, yeah, I can't. Like a CBS sitcom. I just need something so weird. So I've become obsessed with weird Heathcliff. I'm going to put a recent Heathcliff, a summer themed one.
Starting point is 00:15:30 in the chat for you. Like, how does he top that? Share it with everybody. So this is from a couple days ago. It's Heathcliff walking on a pier with a mummy. The monkey is wearing swim trucks. They both have sunglasses. They both have ice cream.
Starting point is 00:15:48 Yes. And the guy from the ice cream shop is saying, the summer mummy gets the sand flavor. The summer mummy gets the sand flavor. It is a play on a phrase that only, exists inside his brain. Yeah. Summer mummy, sand flavor.
Starting point is 00:16:05 I think it starts as a play on the early bird gets the worm. But it goes so far off the rails so fast. Right. By the end, I don't even know where I am. So, yeah, this guy has just gone A to Z in his mind, but has not brought us along the journey. He's giving us A, he's giving us Z, and it's, I love it. Dan Flavis. Do we know are any of these still appearing in newspapers anywhere across the country? I think they are. I read them on R. slash Heathcliff. Heathcliff subreddit where you can get the post daily.
Starting point is 00:16:43 But yeah, I think this does just appear in like, you know, the USA Today or the like, you know, Pittsburgh B or something. And then just this is next to. You're just children so puzzled by this out there in like Middle America somewhere. But yeah, I think they need to give this guy like an adult swim show, just let him do whatever he wants, make weird Heathcliff. I started out being mad at it, but now I love it. Like Heathcliff, my only memory of him was cleaning a fish, like putting a whole fish in his mouth and pulling it out and it's just fish skeleton. That was an amazing superpower. Of course. But that was his shit for 70 years, just like normal cartoon cat stuff.
Starting point is 00:17:24 And now it's just like a glimpse into madness. Yeah. Like, famous gap tooth king, you know? Yeah, a bit of a gap tooth. Or he just had like
Starting point is 00:17:33 that one tooth just kind of always coming out. Yeah, yeah, yeah, like one of his things. Yeah. Wait, look at this one.
Starting point is 00:17:40 It's heat clips. This is the podcast. With star pants wearing stilts with a balloon that says, bro walking down the street. And then the caption is, when did he start wearing a monocle?
Starting point is 00:17:50 Which is on, he is also wearing a monocle. But also like a bro, Just like, all right, bro balloon, stilts. That's our Heathcliff. Why start wearing a monocle? All right. A complicated statement about Gen Z.
Starting point is 00:18:06 Right. Right. Yeah. And Uncle Sam. They don't have sex. They just walk down the street in stilts. With their bro balloons? The balloon that says bro.
Starting point is 00:18:16 They're not having sex. They're just doing stuff like this. Jordan, what's something you think is underrated? Okay. I have a couple of. of food-based over unders. Okay. Okay, great.
Starting point is 00:18:30 People like to talk about the egg McMuffin. Everybody loves to talk about the Egg McMuffin. You got to hang over, get yourself an Egg McMuffin. Oh, yeah. Do we not talk about the McGrittle enough? When's the last time you all had a McGrittle? It's been a while. Probably over a decade.
Starting point is 00:18:47 Probably. It's perfect. It's a perfect fast-eat-eim. I had a really bad run of eating McDonald's breakfast when my kid was born, because I would stay up throughout the night so Her Majesty could sleep and be rested.
Starting point is 00:19:01 And I'm just like a night out so I'm like I'm fine. Like I'm good for it. But during that, the way I ended, like I would be up from like eight to five. And then at five, I would be like,
Starting point is 00:19:12 this is how I go to bed. I'm going to eat two fucking sausage McMuffins and stretch my stomach out and then just sleep for like five hours. The last time, one of the last meals I had from that. Some people do a glass of warm milk. Some people do herbal tea.
Starting point is 00:19:24 No, no, no, no, no. I got a couple of sausage biscuits. The last few meals I did were McGrittles, but that was like almost three years ago. Yeah. Okay. But it was the last thing I did have for breakfast. So you think you kind of ODed on it a little bit like you? No, not at all.
Starting point is 00:19:38 I was just like, I was kind of like, no, you know what? This is also a classic. But I was, to your point, I think underrating it. Yeah, I just think it's like, I think it's the great McDonald's menu item. I think like, you know, it doesn't get talked about in the same breath that the Big Mac does, that the McNugget does. I think the sweet and the savory, it's just more complex than your usual McDonald's. Yes, for those of us with a sophisticated power, the salty, sweet interplay of the griddle. There's a little of us who like dunk in that sausage and the pancake syrup?
Starting point is 00:20:13 It's giving you the whole thing. Certain umami quality. It's a time saver is what it is. It's the one true umami item. Thank you. At McDonald's. Yes. Yes, you mommy.
Starting point is 00:20:24 The fifth taste. Yeah, it's the Big Riddle. Yeah. I love them, yeah. Perfect. They're the greatest hangover fighter. Yeah, if you're driving through and got a much something on the road. Sorry?
Starting point is 00:20:39 You hung over a lot? Yeah, maybe this is me. That's a whole problem. Sorry, just my ears are perking up. Just kind of like, oh, okay. Are we recording this? Is this an intervention? No.
Starting point is 00:20:50 But here's my friend Jeff Van Vondren. who wants to sit down and facilitate a conversation with us. There's a lot of people here who love you. They're crazy about you, man. And they feel like they're losing you. They feel like they're losing you. Jack, you want to read your letter first? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:21:04 He always, Van Bondering, always, hey, I got to say, I just met these folks, but I got to say they're crazy about you, man. We really like that. Now they want to read a couple things. You just hear what they have to say. We don't have to do anything more.
Starting point is 00:21:15 Just listen right now. Can Taffir start doing those? Oh, yeah. Oh, my God. Shut it down. No, your alcoholism. Yeah. What are you an idiot?
Starting point is 00:21:24 You're losing everything if you keep doing this crap. I have one sport coat that I wear for an entire season. What is something you think is overrated, Jordan? Okay. In the, staying on the topic of breakfast, I have been lured in many times by cold foams. I don't know if you all get in the morning coffee. Everybody's got a cold foam these days.
Starting point is 00:21:51 And I love the idea. aesthetically love it. And I understand why they're so big. They look great out on the Insta. You know, you've got the foam on top. The phrase is great. The phrase sounds amazing. It is.
Starting point is 00:22:01 It's a cellar door. Cold foam. It just hits the ear. Perfect. I want to give you an extra buck 50 or whatever to have it. To put air, whipped air on top. Yeah. But I feel like it doesn't, it doesn't infuse the drink like I want it to.
Starting point is 00:22:18 Like even when I give it a good stir, it just hangs out on top. And then I feel like I get normal coffee and then some ice with flavor at the end. Yeah, yeah. I just, I just, I, functionally, I don't think it works like you want it to. It doesn't like, no, however. Use the drink. I have a coffee maker that has like, it can make cold foam. Oh, boy, okay.
Starting point is 00:22:41 And I'll just drink that. You're a home foam guy. I'm a home foam. I'm a home foam. You know? And ET home foam. And ET home. That ET.
Starting point is 00:22:49 That ET death home foam. They completely misunderstanding me. Yeah. Completely. Oh, no, don't buy it for me. Don't pay for foam.
Starting point is 00:23:00 Foam home. Please. E.T. Nespresso. Partner with George Clooney. E.T. also been watching those commercials. E.T.
Starting point is 00:23:08 really into Dave Ramsey. Want to give you tips for your finances and also Christianity. But I, I agree. Like, it doesn't work to be mixed with a drink. It's also, it's just like the top part.
Starting point is 00:23:20 You just drink and then you get to your actual drink. Right. So I agree. It does fuck all for the actual thing. It's more just like a light pillow topper for your mattress. Sure. But flavor. The cold foam is the show.
Starting point is 00:23:35 Right. Kind of. Yeah. And Victor knows because Victor, I was telling Victor, I'm like, bro, I think something's wrong with me, dude. Like, I'm just fuck. I'll put a little bit of vanilla extract in there. And now I'm just drinking vanilla cloud. That's it.
Starting point is 00:23:48 You'll just have a glass of cloud then. Yeah, I'm a child. If you need to go to sleep, just take down a couple sausage biscuits, a glass of cloud. A glass of cloud and like three volume, dude. Yeah. Time travel until night. You put the volume in first to make it cold foam it up. Oh, you get old-en to the unfoamed milk.
Starting point is 00:24:08 Yeah. Me, I'm always foamed the diazepams, dude. People know that about me. Amazing. All right. Let's take a quick break. We'll be right back to talk about some news. You've heard the chaos.
Starting point is 00:24:25 Now you can see it. Hello. Oh my gosh. Watch all your favorite podcasts from start to finish. Right inside the free IHare Radio app. Gets the blood going up. Catch every laugh and eye roll on shows like the Tom Green Farmcast and park the bus. Now with full video.

Open the free IHRRA radio app. Search video podcasts and tap watch. What's up fam? I'm sports journalist Ari Chambers. Hey, what's up y'all? It's your girl, Sam J.
Starting point is 00:24:59 And we're the host of everyone watches women's sports, a new podcast from Together and I Heart Women's Sports. Because let's be real. Women's sports is giving us way too much to talk about these days. So Kelsey Finler, she became the first female solo roer to go from California to Hawaii. My first thought is like, what's up with the snacks? Like, what are we eating? The highlights, the rivalries, the breakout stars, the moments that take over your entire time. timeline. In the conversations that start during the game and somehow keep going all week. Every week, we're breaking down the biggest stories across women's sports. Naomi Osaka showing out, she beat. Sabalinka.
Starting point is 00:25:36 Shout out to you, Naomi. You get the palm, Naomi. You get the palm for that. Because we're not just interested in what happened. We're interested in why everyone's talking about it. Because everyone watches women's sports. Listen to everyone watches women's sports on the IHeart Radio app. Apple Podcast or wherever you get your podcast. I'm Nancy Glass. of the Burden of Guilt Season 3 podcast. This is a story about a horrendous situation that destroyed two families. It started more than seven years ago when Cindy and Kenny were two 40-somethings who had just gotten engaged.
Starting point is 00:26:12 Days later, they walked into a scorched earth war they never saw coming. Turn around and place your hands by your back. The cops given to my house and threw me in jail. And to Cindy's surprise, her fiancé Kenny was charged with abusing one of the first. her children. I never once doubted Kenny, and I always doubted the accusation. On season three of Burden of Guilt, you'll hear a story about the length someone will go to in order to get what they want. This case has got to be one of the most despicable. Starting point is 00:26:50 you get your podcasts. Hey, Portlandia fans. Carrie Brownstein and Fred Armisen here. You know us, or rather you know them. Tony and Candice, Nina and Lance, Spike, and yes, the chicken. We've played a lot of iconic characters over the years, but today we're showing up as ourselves to tell you about Podlandia, AEO rewatch, our brand new podcast. Each week we'll revisit an episode of Portlandia from the very beginning, breaking down the sketches, exploring the backstories of our most iconic characters,
Starting point is 00:27:21 revisiting the Portland locations you know and love, and opening up about our creative process. How did any of this get made? Why do we think that was a good idea? We're ready to talk about it. And we'll also be joined by the people who helped bring it all to life. Guest stars, collaborators, and friends, including director Jonathan Chrysall, the mayor himself, Kyle McLaughlin, legendary musician Amy Mann, and many more.
Starting point is 00:27:43 Kyle is going for it here. You fully improvised, not just words, but a song, a melody. Well, I thought he was going to write. I thought you were all going to write a song. I remember you thinking that. Listen to Podlandia. Ayo, Rewatch, on the I Heart Rate. radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:28:01 And we're back. And this is the thing that keeps kind of coming up for me. And it's a story that I know popped out to you, Miles, is that the president seems to be getting mad at the people around him. Seems to like not understand what's going on. There seems to be some confusion. We typically even killed Donald Trump. I know.
Starting point is 00:28:31 It's losing it just a little bit. Just a little bit. I think any, it's, again, it's senility. It's like all these stories, like a lot, especially like the Daily Beast, they love to be like, oh, Trump's fucking melting down. Right. It is.
Starting point is 00:28:47 Like for their click bait shit. The walls are closing in. And then you read it. It's finally over. Yeah, you read it. It's just a description of a man in severe mental decline and people around him who are lying to him being like, what the fuck are we supposed to do with this mess? And so that's like the latest thing that I just read. So first of all, the latest polling shows that Trump is losing support, even with his own base over the handling of the Iran blunder.
Starting point is 00:29:11 Overall, two-thirds of voting Americans think this has been a total shit show and needs it to end. And so against this backdrop, we get these like anecdotes, these reports of like that Trump's nurses slash cabinet members have to navigate the desires of a senile man who knows fuck all about anything, anything. And balancing that against how the world actually operates and will respond to his. behavior. So Trump, again, obviously, started the war because he's hopped up on his own ego and pep talks from Netanyahu. And when it began to fail, he doesn't have the mental acuity to take new data in, process that, determine if a new course of action is needed. He only knows to keep doubling down, which is what both, I believe, Sun Su and Machiavelli referred to as the op who is dumb as shit. And there's some new reporting out that- They both landed on that same term.
Starting point is 00:30:01 Both of those famous thinker wordsmiths. Some things are just out there in the ether just waiting to be articulated no matter where on the planet. Yes. And so this new reporting says, quote, the report said that 80-year-old president, quote, exploded at a meeting with his top national security officials last week. Trump was reportedly, quote, yelling expletives to express his frustration over the lack of progress in the war he launched. So it's like, this is again, you're squaring every boneheaded decision he's making. and then he goes, why isn't it working? And they're like, we,
Starting point is 00:30:36 what the fuck do we even say now? I told you to not do this, or we try to give you advice, but you don't give a fuck, and we're sycophants, so this is kind of the bed we've made for ourselves. Yeah, I'm assuming every fascist regime, like there is a struggle between, you know,
Starting point is 00:30:52 you're telling lies to keep the dummies in line, and then you're also like getting fooled by those lies. yourself. That's actually, you know, that scene in the movie Downfall where like Hitler
Starting point is 00:31:07 flips his shit about Germany getting eliminated from the World Cup or, you know, Oh, you mean whatever, yeah,
Starting point is 00:31:16 when they always change it, but what's the scene? Final Cut Pro 7, sir. Yes, exactly. Remember when they took the headphone jack off the iPhone?
Starting point is 00:31:25 Yeah, that was pretty mad about that too. Hitler was so mad. He was on the side of But it's actually a scene where his generals, he, his generals are like, they're closing in like here, here and here. And he's like, no, we're going to win, like, we're going to do this maneuver that I've been talking about. And his generals have to be like, oh, no, like, that, that's bullshit, mind furor. Like, it was, that was part of the propaganda. Like, we don't, we don't got the dogs.
Starting point is 00:31:57 We're out of people. We're getting, like, cleaned out. And, like, that's, that seems like it's, like, what's happening a lot to him is he's, like, there's that Maria Bartaromo Fox News story where she was like, I just, I don't understand how Iran keeps attacking us. The president has said, like, we've destroyed all of their military capabilities, like, over and over again. Right. And it, I don't know if he, I think he might believe it. Like, I think he might have actually been. Oh, yeah. Yeah. He's living in a simulation.
Starting point is 00:32:30 that's being supported by other people's lies. Because no one's going to tell them, like, bro, this is a strategic defeat. Like, your only options out of this are to fucking bow prostrate before the world and say, I fucked up, okay? Let me help try and fucking make it better again. But I think the momentum of U.S. imperialism would prevent that. So it just turns into more like, well, then I guess I'm going to have to do bomb all the bridges and the electrical power plants and make a bunch of,
Starting point is 00:33:00 innocent Iranian suffer to try and get you to capitulate. And they're like, those are work. In the past week or so, Trump really seems to hate bridges. He's really, like, focused on getting rid of bridges.
Starting point is 00:33:12 Where does that come from? I think he's also, he's a coward, right? Sure. And he doesn't like to think also that, like, he's like, I'm going to just kill a bunch. I mean,
Starting point is 00:33:21 he knows the byproduct of bombing things is killing people. But I think for him, he's like, yeah, yeah, bomb the bridges. Because then that goes boom. And then I don't have to be up at night thinking about that school that we destroyed or some other.
Starting point is 00:33:34 How reliant is around on bridges? Like how any, maybe a ton. I guess I don't know. Well, I think he says that to say, I will grind all transportation within your nation impossible. By destroying your bridge crossings.
Starting point is 00:33:48 And also if you have no power, that means like people like humanitarian like expert, like relief people are like, dude, if you do that, that's like putting 10 million people sentencing them to death like pretty quickly. Just with no power. and no ability to move around the country.
Starting point is 00:34:02 Like, that's what you're doing. Indirectly. Yeah, yeah, exactly. That's what will happen with the lack of power or infrastructure needed to get supplies across the country or water or things like that. But again, he's just, I think what happens is they're like, well, then nuke them. They're like, we can't do that, sir. Right.
Starting point is 00:34:17 But then do they do the bridge. Like, those are war crimes, sir. And then he's like, okay, but how about we blow up this random boat, sir? And he's like, that'll show them? He's like, yes, sir, they will know how strong you are. Oh, you won. That was the last boat. Good, good, let's do that.
Starting point is 00:34:32 How come I didn't win? Fuck. We'll actually film it in 70 millimeter IMAX for you, sir. It says grok at the bottom. Don't fool me. I know AI when I see it. Let's show it in 4D and the seats will shake around and make it sprayed with water.
Starting point is 00:34:47 I've seen those AI videos of people pretending those what like are the 4D screenings of the Odyssey look like? No. It's like fucking full on. People are getting doused with ocean water like off the screen. And people are just like, oh my God, this looks great. Yeah, you're like, what the fuck are you talk? Okay, I love it.
Starting point is 00:35:07 Every time I see one of these articles about like Trump goes on expletive, you know, laid in tirade, they never, they never really tell you what he said. And I, I just, I have a morbid curiosity like, what to Trump is an expletive? Like, when he does this, what is he saying? I have a feeling it's just unrelated slurs. It's just slurs that aren't related to what's going on. It's maybe some old ones that, like, people used in the 50s for someone who's like a fourth, not white. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:35:39 Right, right, right. Yeah. It's like, what are these? I thought we were getting rid of all the swamp frogs. What is he? Who does that? Yeah, it's like something your grandpa says and you're a little worried about it. A genealogy of racism on a whiteboard behind them being like, okay, so here's what I've got.
Starting point is 00:35:56 I just want to get rid of all the summer mummies. we just want to bomb the summer mummies. I think anyone who, like we say this all the time, anyone who's been around somebody who's slipping into the senility, dementia, darkness, these things come up where they get very frustrated about stuff and start saying,
Starting point is 00:36:15 like getting really angry about shit. Then their frustration of like kind of not like watching the sort of lights go out. So pardon me half the time is like, yeah, this is because he is ailing and he's an 80 year old man and it should not be the president. So everything starts and ends there. All the other analysis is like whatever,
Starting point is 00:36:36 because the person is clearly not fit for office and is only driving things further and further into the gutter, into the ditch. And when he is fit, it's even worse, you know, because his goals and aims are really bad. But yeah, like, we covered earlier in the week that, like, RFK, he, again, had an expletive-laden, tirade at RFK for not having proven the link between vaccines and autism yet.
Starting point is 00:37:06 And the article was specifically said RFK was taken aback by his insistence that he proved the link. It's just, again, it's just like, wait, did you not know we were lying? Like, I guess that's the thing that, like, the only way for RFK to be taken aback is if he's like, no, dude, this was a lie. What are you talking about? I'm lying. That's the thing that will drive you crazy if you think you're hard about this stuff is like, what do these people actually believe and what is just like a lie to trick dummies? Right.
Starting point is 00:37:39 Yeah, it drives you crazy. And yeah, it does look like we're to a point where they're like, oh, no, he believed this stuff. I thought we were all on the same page. We're just a lie to like make a Facebook aunt mad. But no, I guess that was true. he specifically accused him of having the yips, which is a term for a golfer who like gets above a golf ball and like can't hit the ball
Starting point is 00:38:03 because they're like fucked up like from missing it or something. Right. Which that that is his only explanation for why he hasn't proven it yet. He's like obviously the connections out there, you told me so. So why aren't you doing it? You must have the yips. The yips does sound like a slur-Trump would use.
Starting point is 00:38:24 That's probably why he likes that word. Who are you talking about? The Yemenis. You know who I'm talking about. Oh, he eats the Yemenis. I was like, oh, you're not talking about like. He's like, you remember Gil Hodges, the Brooklyn Dodgers? He got it bad.
Starting point is 00:38:39 He's like, what? He did. Yeah, I feel like that's what he's thinking. It's like when Mr. Burns tries to put together a baseball team. Honest Wagner. Exactly. At the gift. That Daryl Strawberry.
Starting point is 00:38:52 He's hooked on that brain touch. Or was it him or Ken Griffey who kept sick? It was King Griffey Jr. Yeah, he made his skull old. I can't do. Great episode. It'd be funny if Trump was just a big Simpsons guy. Yeah. I need that.
Starting point is 00:39:05 These are references. Seasons three through ten. That was the golden years. Steenams. Very funny. They felt they jumped the shark with the Armand Tamsarian reveal of Mr. Skinner. Some believe so that maybe it was eight where it fell off. Many are saying.
Starting point is 00:39:22 Steam Pams. He does love to talk about people's arm. being like big Christmas hams. So maybe she should watch you should look at more Heathcliff cartoon. Yeah, that guy's going over the ham limit. That's what I've always said about Trump.
Starting point is 00:39:33 And just for the sake of one more callback, RFK does kind of look like a summer mummy. He does. Like if you unwrapped the summer mummy. Did you know that? He has a new show. He has a new cooking show. Oh my God, no way.
Starting point is 00:39:46 It's online. It's so fucking bad. He's like, these are all dishes. Famous for eating roadkill. Like, That's the only connection I have between him and food at all. You're scraping stuff off the highway and throwing it on a George Foreman grill.
Starting point is 00:40:02 Yeah, there's that for sure. For sure, for sure. Yeah, he's got this whole, like, I'll just play the beginning. I do want to just play the beginning of it. There's like this whole intro section where he clearly has never used a knife to cut food in his life. Oh, my God. It's like a Weight Watchers commercial from like the 90s. Hi, I'm Robert F Kennedy Jr.
Starting point is 00:40:23 your HHS secretary. Welcome to the real food show. Thanks to President Trump, we flipped the food pyramid and put real food that where it belongs at the center of the American plate. I'm traveling across America connecting with... What is the shot of him cutting a carrot? Here. What was that? They had to cut away from it really quick.
Starting point is 00:40:46 It looked like he was slaughtering like a about to die, like putting an animal out of its misery. Like he had the carrot. like the knife on top. And he's like, fuck. He cut the carrot like he was slitting its throat. He's like, and the camera movement is like a horror film where it's like,
Starting point is 00:41:03 you're not going to see the slitting of the throat. Right. But you can tell from the actor's arm movement to like, your imagination is worse than what's actually happening. Very cocky and. Yeah, anyway. Jesus.
Starting point is 00:41:14 So he's got a whole thing now where he's like, oh, we're making salmon cakes for under $5 a serving. I'm like, but still no real information on how to achieve that. He's just proclaiming that these things are all under $5 and you can eat healthily. None of what I'm cooking causes autism, though. No, no, no, no.
Starting point is 00:41:31 I have my guarantee. These salmon cakes will not cause autism. And either will my Tylenol casserole. Just to say, it's very safe. Exactly. I will say, in defense of summer mummies, the summer mummy was wearing bathing suit shorts, whereas RFK has never worn anything outside of jeans. Yeah, he swims in jeans.
Starting point is 00:41:55 You think he's a never nude? I think he's got to be. I think he's got like wild stuff happening on his shins maybe. I'm not sure what. What do you think? You got barnacles on there? Yeah, it could be barnacles.
Starting point is 00:42:10 Some leeches that are constantly feeding off him. Or it's like he's actually a zombie and like that's where like it's all that's that's where the thing was. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. And you're like, it's a shin bone, dude. It's just shin bone, man. There's no fucking.
Starting point is 00:42:22 It's all necrotizing. Let's talk about Elon. We love talking about Elon Musk on here. You dropped this can. That's what I say to Elon on X, the everything app. Are you doing most of your banking there or all of your banking on X, the everything? Yeah. Yeah, all I may have.
Starting point is 00:42:41 I just donated blood with it. You can do everything there. Everything, man. So his ex-AI is suing Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison. over the state's new law targeting notification apps, which they say violates the First Amendment. The law imposes a penalty
Starting point is 00:43:00 of up to $500,000 per violation and was passed back in May, which it's actually going to be, so May was not coincidentally four months after Grock flooded the internet with millions of sexually explicit, deep fakes, including images of minors. And that's my First Amendment, right?
Starting point is 00:43:21 What the fuck are they going on about? In another era, like a content moderation disaster of that magnitude would have been, you know, the flip would have been switched or the switch would have been flipped like immediately. But because it's Elon Musk, he just let it ride for a couple days. Of course. So it's our writer jam is pointing out that the law was passed in May and is scheduled to go into effect on August 1st. And they just filed the lawsuit like two days before. It's this article from, I think, The Verge said it's the kind of delayed reaction that makes you wonder if someone at XAI suddenly noticed last week that they were about to be in violation of a fairly punitive law and then spent the next few days trying to find a law firm willing to work overtime on behalf of a nonsensical deep fake generator. It's like when you brush your teeth,
Starting point is 00:44:20 a lot before you go to the dentist the next day. Right. Yeah, exactly. I can make up for it. Yeah. Yeah. And somehow the dentist never knows. Never doing a great job.
Starting point is 00:44:29 I was making deep fakes on my phone this whole time, doctor. So how will this affect the version of the Odyssey that's not woke? Will this delay it or? Yeah. Not as much nudity as he was planning initially. It is a little odd nudity that there is a car. out here? Right. Like for people that use
Starting point is 00:44:54 are generating deep fakes or fake nude images but with skill-based technology it is a wildly flawed law but not for the reasons they're objecting to. If the person's in the lab cooking with
Starting point is 00:45:10 Photoshop and creating creepy deep fakes, we're good. We just don't want to take their jobs is like how the law is written. Right. There's somebody hard work deep fakers out there. Yeah. It's such a like a Democrat kind of thing too
Starting point is 00:45:24 because they're like also political speech could also be caught up in this. Like if you're making AI, like there's like a sumo wrestler image of Chris Chris Chris and J.B. Pritzker. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:45:35 And they're like, oh, that could be illegal because it's their intimate parts. I mean, disgusting way to make a point. Yeah. Yeah. So it's like I've seen some bad AI images. There's a lot of them out there.
Starting point is 00:45:46 Hell, every dive bar now has an AI poster that looks like shit. But that's a really bad one. Every bar. And I get it too, man. You don't have a marketing department. Of course. Just, dude, like, that's why I appreciate just hand-scrawled bullshit. Hand-scrawled bullshit.
Starting point is 00:46:03 Bring it back. Bring it back. Underrated. Yeah. Honestly, the amount of slop we're experiencing, the next wave is just going to be hand-scrawled shit. Yeah. Dude, I know some guy with a, who does not get enough rest through this.
Starting point is 00:46:19 with a Sharpie person. Yeah. Yeah, huge bummer. And it's a bummer how many new deep fakes are on those dive bar flyers, too. Yeah. Of me. Of you.
Starting point is 00:46:30 Every time. Hey, it did get me to go in for 25-cent buffalo wing night. That is true. I don't know. I didn't have to make my penis a buffalo wing, though, in the post. It does look a lot like buffalo.
Starting point is 00:46:40 It looks like a flat. Right. Let's, uh, let's two flats connected together because A.I didn't really know. It's kind of like the sixth finger. It has four bones in it. Hey, I, come on, man. Let's take a quick break.
Starting point is 00:46:53 We'll come back. We'll talk about Shark Week and Shark Movie Year. We'll be right back. You've heard the chaos. Now you can see it. Hello. My gosh. Watch all your favorite podcasts from start to finish.
Starting point is 00:47:10 Right inside the free I-Hare radio app. Gets the blood going up. Catch every laugh and eye roll on shows like the Tom Green Farmcast and park the bus. Now with full video. We're building a ramp for Tony Hawk. It's the same host. and the same chemistry with all the hilarious moments you've been missing right on your screen. Cheers.
Starting point is 00:47:28 Open the free IHard Radio app. Search video podcasts and tap watch. What's up, fam? I'm sports journalist Ari Chambers. Hey, what's up, y'all? It's your girl, Sam J. And we're the host of everyone watches women's sports, a new podcast from Together and IHart Women's Sports.
Starting point is 00:47:43 Because let's be real. Women's sports is giving us way too much to talk about these days. So Kelsey Finler, she became the first female solo rower to go from California to Hawaii. My first thought is like, what's up with the snacks? Like, what are we eating? The highlights, the rivalries, the breakout stars, the moments to take over your entire timeline.
Starting point is 00:48:04 And the conversations that start during the game and somehow keep going all week. Every week, we're breaking down the biggest stories across women's sports. Naomi Osaka showing out, she beat Sabalinka. Shout-houts to you, Naomi. You get the palm, Naomi. You get the palm for that.
Starting point is 00:48:19 Because we're not just interested in what happened. We're interested in why everyone's talking about it. Because everyone watches women's sports. Listen to everyone watches women's sports. On the IHeart Radio app. Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcast. I'm Nancy Glass, host of the Burden of Guilt Season 3 podcast. This is a story about a horrendous situation that destroyed two families.
Starting point is 00:48:43 It started more than seven years ago when Cindy and Kenny were two 40-somethings who had just gotten engaged. Days later, they walked into a scorched earth war they never. saw coming. Turn around and place your hands behind your back. The cops given to my house and threw me in jail. And to Cindy's surprise, her fiance, Kenny, was charged with abusing one of her children. I never once doubted Kenny, and I always doubted the accusation.
Starting point is 00:49:12 On season three of burden of guilt, you'll hear a story about the length someone will go to in order to get what they want. This case has got to be one of the most despicable. Listen to season three of burden of guilt. on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, Portlandia fans. Carrie Brownstein and Fred Armisen here. You know us, or rather, you know them.
Starting point is 00:49:39 Tony and Candace, Nina and Lance, Spike, and yes, The Chicken. We've played a lot of iconic characters over the years, but today we're showing up as ourselves to tell you about Podlandia, AEO, rewatch, our brand-new podcast. Each week, we'll revisit an episode of Portlandia from the very beginning, breaking down the sketches, exploring the backstories of our most iconic characters, revisiting the Portland locations you know and love, and opening up about our creative process. How did any of this get made?
Starting point is 00:50:06 Why do we think that was a good idea? We're ready to talk about it. And we'll also be joined by the people who helped bring it all to life, guest stars, collaborators, and friends, including director Jonathan Chrysler, the mayor himself, Kyle McLaughlin, legendary musician Amy Mann, and many more. Kyle is going for it here. Are you fully improvised, not just words, but a song, a melody?
Starting point is 00:50:28 I thought he was going to write. I thought you're all going to write a song. I remember you thinking that. Listen to Podlandia. Ayo, rewatch on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. And we're back. We're back. And it's not just any week right now.
Starting point is 00:50:53 Did you know? No, I never. I mean, I know it's sharp. Are they allowed to use that music? They're like, damn, done, dun. Dan, dan, dan, da. It's one note off. No, yeah.
Starting point is 00:51:03 Or just don't, just the same note. Da, da, da, da, da, da, there you go. And the Discovery Channel. Parity at the end. Right, right. This is the Weird Al version of the. Fair use. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:51:17 The Discovery Channel, you know, increasingly outlandish, ethically dubious shark-themed program. Last year, remember it was dancing with sharks? Yes. What are the things they had? It was so stupid. I was tricked by Michael Phelps out swims the shark. Oh, that was one?
Starting point is 00:51:35 Yeah, there's one where he was going to race a shark. And I tuned in because I thought it was happening. And then it was just like, well, we estimated how fast the shark could swim. And then Michael Phelps swam and you compared those two numbers. But it wasn't him actually. But they got Phelps. I don't know. Yeah, I was dumb.
Starting point is 00:51:53 Okay. No, I get that's on me. Phelps. I mean, that's pretty impressive. It's just some guys. named Michael Phelps. Yeah. A realtor.
Starting point is 00:52:01 Which just gets eaten by a shark. Isn't that what you wanted to see anyway? I'm like, yeah, it kind of was. Kind of, yeah. I don't care if it's Michael Phelps, the Olympian. This year, they're further eradicating any connection to actual science with a show that I don't know enough about what it is, but it's called K-pop shark heroes. And it's K-pop Demon Hunter themed shark content.
Starting point is 00:52:27 I read the, you know, in the, in the, in the info doc, y'all were kind enough to prepare. I did read the like Hollywood reporter announcement of this show, which is, it's Ken Jong and one of the voice actors from K-pop demon hunters. I know he's also in the movie, but one of the, one of the, one of the, she's, I think the ones. She's the one who does the performance stuff for Zoe. Okay. A wonderful film. I live in a very K-pop demon hunter's household. Oh, yeah. God bless.
Starting point is 00:52:55 Wonderful movie. Thank you. in the Hollywood Reporter article. It even says it is unclear on how K-pop enters into the show. Like, even in there. We don't know. No idea. No idea.
Starting point is 00:53:10 We're down to the last day of Shark Week, and we haven't figured it out either. I don't know. Here's two things you like. Yeah. If you just call it K-pop Shark Week, Macha Lubuibu, and just fine, you know, that actually may work. Minecraft. I wonder if there's. gotta be like a clip of this somewhere.
Starting point is 00:53:29 Like is it just Ken Jong? Like it would suck that he's just like, I don't know, I'm in K-pop, demon hunters, here's a shark, dude. We don't say,
Starting point is 00:53:38 I can't say I'm the character from this. So fuck. He's giving the thumbs up in the promotional image. So he feels good about it. He seems to be confident in the product. He's giving his approval.
Starting point is 00:53:51 And, you know, he's very funny. He will do whatever. Like, how kind of, respect that guys. Oh,
Starting point is 00:53:57 just I'll do it. Maybe they sing to the sharks? A week ago, Discovery posted this K-pop original song, Aminam, featuring Ken Jong. So that's...
Starting point is 00:54:11 Ken Jong featuring the shark boys. So they're kind of trying to do a baby shark thing. He's drinking a buzzball? He's drinking a buzz ball. Oh my God. It's so sad. They're just doing like a two-step in front of a green screen. And then a lady's running on a picture.
Starting point is 00:54:31 This is very half-ass. This is like, I feel like the people who made Shark Nato would watch this and go, y'all need to try. You only just put a little more effort into this. Yeah. You know, there's cheaper ways to just say, fuck you, you know, than putting this video out. Hey, this is what you like, right? You fucking idiot.
Starting point is 00:54:51 Yeah. Ken Jong sipping a buzz ball and a lady dancing on a beach and doing shark. They were all here for 45 minutes before they went home. That's Cape Bob Demon Hunters. Yeah, yeah. What if the buzz ball was a disco ball? Oh. That's the question that is asked and answers in that little clip.
Starting point is 00:55:07 Sharks are everywhere this summer, thanks to a glut of shark-themed movies, which are mostly on streaming services. We've got above and below the bay, chum, and deep water, which is from Deep Blue Sea director, Rennie Harlan. So, Rennie Harlan, man. Okay. You got Rennie Harlan. That's not nothing. That definitely isn't nothing. One of my favorite jarring transitions from someone giving a rousing pep talk to then be devoured by a shark.
Starting point is 00:55:35 I rewatched Deep Blue C. Recently. Yes, to talk about it on a podcast. Yes, my head is like a shark's fin. My hat is like a shark's fin from L.L. Cool J's rap over the credits. Deepest, bluest, my head is like a shark fin. It's nothing like a shark's fin.
Starting point is 00:55:52 That's a reason. It's my problem. It's a kangled. Deep as blue is my hat's my male pattern baldness. Okay. We're on to something, James. Yeah. In that moment when Samuel L. Jackson is explaining how he, while trapped in the Alps,
Starting point is 00:56:08 in the middle of a different movie, like eight people he was crashed with, like, and then he gets eaten by the shark. It's like the movie where he survives and they have to run from him and the shark is a better movie. Yeah. Yeah. And like, I like that he gets eaten. It's an iconic movie moment. But, like, the movie that happens after that is kind of boring. And the movie of them versus Samuel L. Jackson and the shark would be better.
Starting point is 00:56:37 That's the speech he's in the middle of giving. That's like the downfall speech for me that I've just not paid enough attention to know that he was giving a speech about having eaten people. Yeah. He famously crashed in the Alps and, you know, heavily. implies, I should say, that he ate some of his. This is why you don't crash with a stranger in the Alps. Right. Yes. As the TV edit
Starting point is 00:57:03 said. Do you see what happens? There's also a movie called the devil's mouth, which for people who mostly pay attention to media being hyped by Katie Curick are very familiar with because it was directed by her nephew and so she's out of the
Starting point is 00:57:20 place promoting it. Hey, good a great on. Katie Curric's nephew. It feels like one of those things her nephew's like, please, on Katie, you don't have to say anything that's actually. Right.
Starting point is 00:57:32 It's going to work. I think you're so proud of you. I think you're so great. I remember when you made that first movie on that high camera, remember the twister movie you made with the big fan, the box fan and was blowing the trash around? I remember, I'm going to support you.
Starting point is 00:57:48 Earlier this year, Netflix gave us thrash, which ended with a, quote, Berserk scene in which a woman gives birth in shark-infested waters, which that movie is apparently popular enough to get its own asylum knockoff called Shark, Shark. Shark, so they made a shark movie called Thrasch, and then a shark movie, a knockoff called Shark Thrasch. Shark is truly eating its own tail. It's just like, well, producer Catherine saw thrash. It was good, bad, Catherine?
Starting point is 00:58:20 Yeah. Definitely awesomely bad. It was worth a watch if you want like a really dumb shark movie, which was what I was in the mood for at the time. Yeah, that's exactly what I want. It's a good review. Okay. But, you know, the question of why shark movies are so incredibly popular still since cows, champagne corks and coconuts injure and kill more people than sharks, obviously, Jaws helps. And it's been 50 years and shark movies are the rare subgenre to contain.
Starting point is 00:58:51 a single agreed upon masterpiece that's near impossible to match. Right. It's like gangster movies, by comparison, had a masterpiece at the same time as Jaws. But then they also have like good fellas come out in the 90s. It'd be like if Deep Blue C was directed by Kubrick and like fucking ripped, you know? Is Deep Blue C like the next best shark movie? I think it is, right? It might be.
Starting point is 00:59:18 And I am even here to say that even though it does have its pleasures, many pleasures, especially if you like the physique of Mr. Thomas Jane. Which is not a great movie, unfortunately. So, yeah, maybe we had one good shark movie. I think we got Jaws. And then the next best is actually Jaws 2, in my opinion, which is not very good. I haven't seen it. There's a lot of Jaws 2 people out there. I'm kind of curious.
Starting point is 00:59:44 They just kind of remade it. And, like, they kind of had an idea of what to do from the first one. And so it gets enough parts, right? It's pretty, it's pretty bad. Yeah, because it feels like the, like, deep blue sea is still kind of in that, like, kind of cheesy. It's, like, not, it doesn't feel like Jaws, but it's like, it's doing, it does a great job. I'm like, dude, these Maco sharks are fucking terrifying. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:00:07 But they're still kind of, like, it campiness to it also. Yeah. How do we feel about the Meg? Open water. The Meg was kind of fucking freaky. Oh, you know what? I'm kind of a meg guy. I had forgotten about the mag.
Starting point is 01:00:18 The meg is fun. I'm all right with the mag, yeah. It doesn't, it does take something out of it when the people, the humans are being consumed like the shark is taking pills, you know? Like they're not getting bitten and half. They're just being swallowed whole. Like krill, yeah. Yeah, exactly.
Starting point is 01:00:38 It's like less horrifying to me than the idea of just being bitten in half, you know. Right, right, right. Yeah. I wonder if Stephen Spielberg. He's not crying about it anymore. He already probably said his mea culpa now. And he's like, look, I already apologized for fucking up the shark population with my one good movie.
Starting point is 01:00:56 I'm being told about all these shark movies. So open water, which I never saw. But that's like the indie one, right? Where it's like more, it's like the Blair Witch Project of Jaws movies. Oh, yeah. Yeah, she's kind of stuck out on the dingy and you kind of know there's a shark, but you don't see it too much. I got a little liking that movie all right.
Starting point is 01:01:15 Yeah, maybe there's more good. shark movies than we're realizing. Super producer Justin's given us Beast of War. Beast of War. Dangerous animals is a new one that I think is based on the idea that there's a serial killer
Starting point is 01:01:30 who feeds people to sharks. Oh. If I'm not mistaken. Okay. I'll make that premise. I'm not not in love with that premise. I will just say, Jaws is kind of the most perfect metaphor of any classic movie, or not even metaphor.
Starting point is 01:01:46 or just depiction of the forces that are ruining our lot. Like, a very evident danger is allowed to continue harming people and killing people in the name of, like, leaving the beaches open and leaving the stores open and commerce and profit. Got to, man. Got to. Also, they're obviously getting cheaper and cheaper to make. And, like, they look corny and they look bad,
Starting point is 01:02:11 but, like, they also, like, Waterpark Shark, which is a clip that you sent me, miles where a shark is riding water slides and eating people. Like the shark, yeah, the shark doesn't look terrible. Chums. I think it looks pretty good. The shark looks pretty good.
Starting point is 01:02:28 It's doing things that my brain tells me a shark wouldn't actually be doing that, like riding a water slide. And then there's this movie Chum, which didn't hire a single VFX artist, instead relied on AI generated effects. and can we just play this clip real quick. Are you fucking kidding me? The person you're coming to me.
Starting point is 01:02:58 Yeah, pretty bad. It's like so unbelievable. You're like, no, dude. That's, charge got six fins. Yeah, the shark can float on top of water like a jet ski. Yeah. Like, it's nothing makes sense. It's got some big deep fake tits on it.
Starting point is 01:03:14 Yeah, exactly. You're like, bro. Why not get on it? Yeah. It's not going to make the movie seen by fewer people. Yeah. Somehow they're like, no, dude, make the butt bigger, even bigger.
Starting point is 01:03:27 Yeah. Sharp's got to have a dump truck. Yeah. If he ain't got a dumper, bro. Nobody's going to go see it, man. I know. Trust me, bro. Oh, check out the turd cutter on jaws.
Starting point is 01:03:36 Whoa. Turt cutter. Boom. Such a pleasure having it. Oh, my God. Thanks, guys. On the daily, like, guys. People find you, follow you, see you, hear you all.
Starting point is 01:03:48 good stuff. Yeah, I'll give you a, I'll give you a couple of evergreen plugs and then one exciting limited time offer. Starting point is 01:04:47 has to get his alien symbiote back to its home planet. It's kind of a like planes trains and automobiles or like a midnight run but in the Marvel universe. You don't have to have a lot of Marvel knowledge to read it.
Starting point is 01:05:01 It's kind of a Guardians of the Galaxy, kind of a Thor Ragnarok, that kind of tone. No homework required. If you want to, if you want all five issues, signed by me, deliver to your home
Starting point is 01:05:14 for cover price. You go to bit. L-Y slash goo friends. Gid dot L-Y-slash-GooFriends. And you can order those up or, yeah, or ask for them at your local comic shop, the amazing Venom September 30th. Okay.

Starting point is 01:05:46 We all love it. Great show. I'm sure it's been talked about here. Another Apple TV show that I'm maybe halfway done with is Margo's Got Money Troubles. Oh, yeah. Miles likes that. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:05:59 My friend Miles likes that. What a great show. It is Dakota Fanning. She is a mom hard up for money. She joins the only fans. El Fanning, right? Elle Fanning. She's, ugh.
Starting point is 01:06:09 I confused my fannings. I'm so, sorry. I know. My apologies to the Fanning family. But yeah, she's great in it. It's really funny. all the actors you like her in. You got a Nick Offerman.
Starting point is 01:06:20 You got a Nicole Kidman pops up a little bit. You got Michelle Pfeiffer. What? Fun and funny. Got Michael Angerano from Sky High, bro. He's got everything. Oh, I didn't notice him. Yeah, he's like the scummy baby daddy.
Starting point is 01:06:35 Oh, he's the, yeah. He's her professor. Okay. Yeah. From the Red Man Method Man movie? No, that's how high. Sky high. Sky high.
Starting point is 01:06:45 Was it about a superhero. How Sky High. the portmanton. Yeah. Miles, where can people find users and work in media
Starting point is 01:06:52 you've been enjoying. How sick. So sick that you could some. Me? Oh, yeah. Find me everywhere at Miles of Gray.

Starting point is 01:07:33 Okay, I have to just, my Instagram window was on Savannah Canon videos for research. For research purposes, folks. Can listen to yesterday's trends to find out who that is. This is Dan underscore Lee underscore plum. It's just this video. It says, when HR catches you sleeping at your desk, but you're always one step ahead. I'm just going to describe it. But it's a guy clearly sleeping with headphones on, but he manages to artfully get out of it by pretending he was praying.
Starting point is 01:08:05 Someone tapping him. He goes, hold on one second. Takes a beat, sign of the cross. And then takes the headphones on. How can I hope you? So good. That's really good. That's Trump and Lindsay Graham's funeral, right?
Starting point is 01:08:22 Yeah, yeah. Oh, for sure. I was praying. That's a trick. Anyone who grew up in the Catholic Church knows about is you're at church on Sunday, just dozing, but you got your hands over your face. Yeah. One second.
Starting point is 01:08:35 Yeah, one second. One second. And the Father and Son of the Holy Spirit. Really. Really in it right now, you know. Yes, my father. So locked in. I forgot to stand up and kneel.
Starting point is 01:08:44 45 times with you. Let's see. At Tallbart tweeted every animal in the family guy universe can talk. Brian only talks to humans because he has no animal friends because he sucks. And I don't like to hear that.
Starting point is 01:08:59 But that's a, that gave me a different perspective on the family guy universe that fucked me up. Bobb.com. It adds a little layer of melancholy to that whole show. You can find me on Twitter

Starting point is 01:09:36 enjoy? That you think the people might enjoy. I think I've got one. This is actually, So there's an artist called Clutchy Hopkins that's kind of mysterious. People never could figure out who this person was or collection of artists. And I've always been like super into it because people were like, it's DJ Newmark. It's actually DJ Shadow. It's actually the Beastie Boys just playing their instruments and doing instrumental music. To this day, we do not know who Clutchy Hopkins is. But if that sort of era, like the DJ Shadow Newmark era appeals to you, it's just like really nice instrumental music.
Starting point is 01:10:10 It just got like it feels like some old 60s recording. So this is Clutchy Hopkins with the track 306, like the time 3-06. So check that out. All right. We will link off to that in the footnotes.
