Starting point is 00:00:02 Have you been any Halloween parties yet? No. I hit my first one over the weekend. Over the weekend? Yeah. Already? Part of my overrated. I'm like,
Starting point is 00:00:14 felt clear. Felt clear. That's early, ma'am. Yeah, my shit is not together yet. We have a planned coherent costume and I, yeah. Well, we'll tell you that. Yeah, yeah. I watched the Ben Affleck animals.
Starting point is 00:00:31 You watched Animal? I have a thing, I can't for the life of me, get my shit together to go to a fucking movie theater. Like, I think it's just harder with a kid. Yeah. But if something, I'm like, I have this crazy thing where I have a kid and I don't have any fucking time to go to the movies. It's weird. Like, you're weird, man. What's your problem?
Starting point is 00:00:49 I think because, like, I'm so interested. But like every time, you know, like, you get a second for fucking free time. And then you're like, I got to like lay down or something rather than be like, do I drag my ass to go see Digger? And then it's funny because I was talking to my friend. who are childless, they're a couple, and we were talking about it. And, like, when we were talking about the movie, they both looked at each other and they go,
Starting point is 00:01:08 oh, wait, so is that going to be our movie this weekend? And they're like, yeah, okay, I'm going to buy the tickets now. And I was like, you motherfuckers. Wait, you were talking to them about Dager? Yeah, just like the flexibility they had from our conversation to be like, yeah, actually, we did go meeting to see that. And I was like, I don't even have time to get out of the house.
Starting point is 00:01:26 And they were so quickly like, oh, is that going to be our movie this weekend? I'm like, yeah, let's go see that tomorrow. And I'm just thinking, like, must be nice. that you could just have a conversation and that quickly book tickets to a movie. Our movie this weekend. God damn. Like what am I fucking 25? No kids? No kids.
Starting point is 00:01:45 But it's funny because our movie this weekend is fucking getting through Twilight. I'm still watching Twilight, baby. You're still working through it. I'm getting it. Yeah, it's a, I mean, it is a work of literature. So it should be consumed as such in chapters. I see it as Mark Twain. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:02:02 Mark Twain Mullen. Wow. Yeah, that's my type of literature. Real dumbed down. That's your Halloween costume. Mark Twain Mullen? So you would just, I guess that would be a Mark Twain costume, but like it would have to be a mullet in some way, like muletized. Or like you'd need to look like.
Starting point is 00:02:27 With the sleeves cut off. You need to wear the white suit. Yeah, yeah. He kind of, because he's kind of like a self-styled wannabe tough guy. Body builder. Yeah. If Mark Wayne, Mark Twain was a wannabe tough guy in 2025, I think you'd get Mark Twain Muller.
Starting point is 00:02:44 White suit, sleeves ripped off, white hair with a mustache, but the white hair is styled into a mullet. Or you need his beard, like, you need, because Mark Wayne Mullen's got a beard too, so you just have full white beard. Yeah. Anyway, we can workshop this with your kids. Starting point is 00:04:22 Because you told us how accommodating you are. Obviously, I would do what I think I could do to fight the fight, but there's only so much fight I can fight. Don't lie to me. Don't lie to me. Don't lie to me Don't lie to me Don't lie to me Don't lie to me

Starting point is 00:06:53 on Apple Podcasts. Hi, it's Chelsea Hanler from Dear Chelsea. This season, we've got some awesome guests ready to dole out advice, guests like Portia Williams. I like the wave of adult onset lesbianism that has taken a hold. I think they're, I have a girlfriend of mine who I think is really becoming attracted to me that I need to nip in the bud. No, please nip it. Nip it because now that I have people know, I feel like a lot of my friends are giving me an extra eye. Adam Scott. How does that make you feel? Did I look like Tom Cruise? First of all, do you think, do you think, do you think? Do you think? Do you think? I'm sorry, I started
Starting point is 00:07:36 the sentence first. I think I started this interview. Sarah Borellas. I think I have always been a little bit afraid of grief. Starting point is 00:08:06 podcast. Hello the internet and welcome to this week trend edition of their daily thanks guys. D-da-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-da. My name is Jack O'Brien that over there is Mr. Miles Gray. Hey. This is the episode where we tell you what was trending over the weekends, what was trending over both weekends. No, over the weekend. What was trending so far on this Monday?
Starting point is 00:08:39 and what's trending in our hearts. Mm-hmm. It's hot. I was, I'm wearing like a jacket because, you know, we got, like, weather for two seconds, and I'm already, like, hot. I'm jumping the gun, folks. People don't realize in L.A. We had rain for, like, a day and a half, and I'm already wearing, like, a fucking down jacket as if I need it. It's going to be 90 in two days.
Starting point is 00:09:03 It is chilly, though. There's a chill in the air for the first time this, like, post-summer right now. I just jumped on it way too quick. And now it's gray. It's rainy. I will take it. I'm sitting across from an open window. You may hear the crows in the background.
Starting point is 00:09:19 My murder. Teasing me. Yeah. There's that experiment where they put a mask on and like somebody fucks with crows. And then the crows just will remember that mask for years and like even generations. And like that's what the crows are like. like with me, but it's like my beta energy. They just like can't forget how beta I am.
Starting point is 00:09:45 It transcends even a physical form. Yeah. Yeah. They're like the crows in Missouri have come and told the crows in Los Angeles. In a way, you're like Christ like, where it's like you don't, it's like you don't even need to know the face. You'll know when you see his, when you see him. My body, my bodily energy.
Starting point is 00:10:03 Mm-hmm. Anyways, this is the episode where we tell you what we think is underrated and overrated. Miles, what is something that you think is underrated? My, okay, I have an underrated. I have one thing that's an underrated and overrated and one thing that's an overrated. My one thing that are a couple things. What am I saying? First, under, my, just broadly, I just want to say underrated and overrated at the same time, Twilight.
Starting point is 00:10:27 I'm getting through it. I'm working the different movies. Wow. I'm in, I just finished New Moon. And I think it's a clip. Yeah, yeah, the second one. and now it's like the one where they're like sharing custody of Bella getting upset at each other. I was falling half a sleep.
Starting point is 00:10:43 I'll start the third one over again. That's Robert Pattinson and a werewolf guy? Jacob. Yeah. Jacob and Edward. Taylor Lautner and Edward and Robert Pattinson. It's just like it's funny because like it's so bad that I'm like, what the fuck was wrong with everybody watching this?
Starting point is 00:11:02 But it's also so like sappy that I completely understand. the fuck was wrong with everybody at the same time. It's such a surreal experience to watch. I'm like, and this was 2008. Well, this is also like partially how I measure the power of the icons when we're choosing icons. Like, I was talking about this and this morning's a notebook dump for Hannibal Lecter that, yes, like, we spent most of the episode talking about Silence of the Lambs, but like truly the power of the iconography is tested by the fact that he has also starred in. in like movies that suck shit. Like movies are so bad.
Starting point is 00:11:43 And people still are like, that's my go serial killer cannibal. Like, that's my guy right there. That's the AFI number one villain. So like, yeah, the fact that vampires are still out here
Starting point is 00:11:55 and, you know, sinners is still a thing after the whole Twilight saga. And, you know, Twilight is, mileage may vary and does vary. And I think it's good for, what it is, but like, you know, the people who fuck with sinners might not be the same audience
Starting point is 00:12:12 that fucks with Twilight, but it doesn't matter. They're still out here. It's just like, I'm fascinated with the author too, because like the grasp of like narrative form is completely like an abstraction to this person. Like I'm like, I'm like, constantly like, wait, why is this character suddenly motivated to do this very different thing? But that's, that's broad. The other thing that I think is really overrated is peace and calm as a way to feeling happier. Never heard of this. Yeah, I've got a lot of, just some stressful things happening in my personal life that I'm, you know, just navigating.
Starting point is 00:12:47 But one thing that I'm like realizing, too, is when I'm like feeling like stressed or unhappy about something, sometimes you're like, how do I just want to start feeling happy or something? It's much easier to access peace before. You don't go from fucking unhappy straight to wee yippee. Let me get a wee yippee in here. Unless you fucking hit some crazy ass drugs. That's usually not the sequence of events.
Starting point is 00:13:16 That's why I think it's really important to think first when you're feeling stressed out and maybe unhappy, uneasy. First try and access just some peace, some tranquility, some calm. Because you first, you don't want to go from negative 5 to positive 15. You want to go from negative 5 to 0. That's manageable. So take some time. I've been meditating.
Starting point is 00:13:36 I do this thing where it's like you, there's like many forms of this where like you're, you, you, you want to open your, your energy up a little bit and you're picturing a sky that has a smile to it. And you want to sort of reflect just a light smile throughout your body back to it. And anyway, I was doing this and I found it much easier to like get out of a rut by first giving myself a moment of like tranquility peace than trying to be like, I need to be the opposite of unhappy. I got to fucking bouncing off the walls.
Starting point is 00:14:06 Yeah, yeah. I got to effort my way into happiness. Just get, it's easy, baby. You could float to peace and tranquility first. Get loose like spaghetti. Get to peace and tranquility. Do it. And if you're hearing what I'm saying
Starting point is 00:14:17 and this makes no fucking sense to you, but something's catching your ear, just to start off, try a guided meditation. Even if you can do it five minutes. How well meditation works. It's fucking makes me so mad. Like throughout my 20s and 30s, I was like, no, that sucks.
Starting point is 00:14:33 Like, that's dudes in goofy pants sitting somewhere. But yeah, no, it's not. I meditate every day now. And guys, I'm not going to lie to you. I wish it didn't work. I fucking wish it didn't work that way. But it does. I remember because, like, my dad used to do it.
Starting point is 00:14:49 And as a kid, I would just see him sitting fucking still, not doing a fucking thing. And I was like, and he would be like, hey, hey, hey, he's like, I'm trying to meditate. And I'm like, dad, I thought you were sleeping. right and he's like no i'm being calm and i was like bro this looks like a waste of fucking time because you could be watching ninja turples or some shit time yeah yeah yeah i see but it's so yeah it's just one of those it's who'd have thought that uh centuries of of medicine that isn't that's outside of uh the pharmacological industry yeah how do i buy that in a pill at a store um all right i got two underrated uh as well i got uh living like a parent in the uh 1960s and 70s for a weekend uh
Starting point is 00:15:30 Was I smoking cigarettes on your kids' heads? Exactly. No, we were up at this camp. So my kid's school goes to this camp once a year. And, like, they ran out the camp and the kids can just, like, roam free. Oh, did you do this last year? Yeah, we do this every year. Yeah, okay, I remember.
Starting point is 00:15:47 You get a little cabin. Something similar like this, yeah. And the idea of not knowing where my kids are is such an alien concept to me. And, like, it made me real. remember that there was a famous PSA in the late 60s and early 70s that was a would just come on TV at 10 p.m. and say it's 10 p.m. Do you know where your children are? And that's like, they needed that reminder.
Starting point is 00:16:14 People would be like, oh shit. Yeah, I do have kids. And like, this is the one time because, because, and it really is just strode. It's just streets that are roads that are, you know, too busy, like in, where we live, like I can't not know, I can't just let my kids roam and not know where they are because, fucking, they're too many dangerous streets. So it is nice to, like, be able to find a place once in a while where you can just be like, yeah, I don't know. They, they know where I am. They'll come back when they're hungry or tired. You know what I mean? And it's like easy because you know it's such, it's structured in a way that it's not meant for kids to be like,
Starting point is 00:16:54 I don't know. Oh, they get on the interstate. They just meander off the grounds. To the fucking road. It's like, they're with other kids and it's safe. Yeah, I get it. It is, I mean,
Starting point is 00:17:04 it is what the, you know, did your parents? What the plot from, uh, who framed Roger Rabbit took from us? Were you out of the house? Like a lot as a kid?
Starting point is 00:17:13 Constantly. Constantly. And so I was gone. So they didn't know either, right? They didn't know. And there was definitely some times when I, when like, they would be driving on a busy street and I was,
Starting point is 00:17:24 and there you were. There was like four miles away from her house. And there I was on my bike. And they were like, what the fuck? But yeah, it was... But do you think about that? Like, when you think about your own kids and like, well, I had the ability, like, I was fucking out there doing stuff.
Starting point is 00:17:41 Like, it does. It makes me be like, I shouldn't live in a city with, like, we, we, they should have that ability to just, like, be out and away from high traffic streets that, you know, can, you know, the number one cause of death for kids, like in my kids' ages. car accidents and pedestrian strikes. So, like, that's got, and especially in a place where there's just tons of cars driving fast and recklessly and shit like that. Like, it's just, it's a bummer that they took that from us with, like, the way that
Starting point is 00:18:14 we build everything so that it's not public transport. Yeah. It's everybody in a car trying to get where they're going. Everyone in a car looking at their phone going 20 miles over the speed limit. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, exactly. that's the thing that fucking terrifies me is how many people, when I'm driving, I look over and they got their eyes on their lap.
Starting point is 00:18:35 Yeah. In our days, used to be drunks who weren't wearing their seatbelt. That were the biggest fucking risk. Now we're just like everybody's looking at their fucking phone. I also like, it's underrated by me how sometimes the answer is just to change the batteries. Because I over,
Starting point is 00:18:56 like we were going camping. We have to get the flashlights that, like, you know, we have the flashlights we use on a regular basis. And then, like, when we're all going camping, we had a couple more that for the past couple years, I've been like, these are kind of on the fritz. They're like low, like the, I think the bulb is burning out or something. And like, they keep flickering. And then my wife was like, have you tried changing the batteries? And I was like, well, that's not. And the low, the light came back like new.
Starting point is 00:19:31 It doesn't take a doctor to figure this one out, babe. Oh, shit. It was. It was the batteries. Just as bright as the day we bought them when I changed the batteries out. Remote controls, I've also noticed work like this. Like, I think I just assumed that when we made the switch to, like, phones being, like, they work at 100% and then you, the battery runs out and it's gone. on, like, I assumed, or, like, you know, car, like, that everything was on, like,
Starting point is 00:20:02 car status where it's like, it's going, it's going, it's going, and then it's out of gas. And it's not like the car slows down to 10 miles per hour as you get lower and lower on gas. It's dying. Although that might be a better idea. So you, like, give people a chance to get to. I remember my old Honda when I was getting low because the shit, the, my gas tank meter was, was lying. It was lying after you got passed, like, right around a quarter tank that I was have to vibe it out. And sometimes I would gun it and go,
Starting point is 00:20:30 like it would just do a little, come on, man. I'm not, I don't got that much in me. And I'd be like, I would immediately be like, this is my time. I'm 20 years old and I have to actually start putting gas in my car and not playing a game like that. But it's also also remote controls. I've noticed. I've been like,
Starting point is 00:20:47 this fucking remote is broken. It only works when I like go right up to the thing and press it. And then low, I change the batteries. It works perfectly again. But you know, like that thing of like things being like the breaking down and I was just thinking like well it can't be the battery like that's just also
Starting point is 00:21:04 part of like the inshittification planned obsolescence track that we're on. Right. Yeah, because that's what with phones. Yeah. How many game consoles like game gear, game boy, PSP, you could put, you could change the batteries out on a fucking thing that would last as long as you kept putting new batteries in it.
Starting point is 00:21:23 Yeah. And then when they were like, you know, we're sealing shit up, you can't get the battery out. Once the battery is fucked on this thing, the whole thing's fucked. Yeah. Like, kind of gives us that sort of thing now, too, where our first thing of like, probably just change the batteries. That's always like the first thing. Yeah, yeah. This is an answer that I probably had at one point in my life and that iPhones kind of drilled out of me. Yeah. No, I would think the same thing. And I'm like, I thought
Starting point is 00:21:48 all technology works better rather than the time-honored process of power source weakening. Miles, what is something that you think is overrated? Overrated, and I'm not, the people who may have been hosting this party may be listening, and I'm not trying to shade you at all, okay? No. This is something just struck me as I was attending. I went to a Halloween party this weekend. Love it.
Starting point is 00:22:13 Okay. Bragg. Congratulations. But it was like a costume Halloween party. And that's early. With very enthusiastic people who will wear costumes. Yeah. By myself, I'm less of the costume type cat.
Starting point is 00:22:30 Do you're the other person in the Babaduke picture? Exactly. With Katie Deppold. God damn. What is this? Drinking wine and a flannel shirt. Yeah, exactly. But I was just sort of like, I was having this conversation with Her Majesty on the way
Starting point is 00:22:43 there, because I wasn't complaining. I was like, what to you is like the, like, when should costume parties begin? For me. When should we expect you to have your costume lock? down for the year. I feel like if you are, if you're barely getting into the double digit dates before the 15th, that feels early to me. And I don't know why. Because I get it. Once it's October, it is, I do agree. It's spooky season now. I'm fucking doing it with watching Twilight and all this other weird shit and, you know, kind of. Scariest movie there is. Leving, I know,
Starting point is 00:23:15 trust me. I have to pause it constantly and leave the house. But I just like, there was something about that that felt, I think, I don't know why, like, I was being press. about her match she was like no it's great because now we get to like have fun and wear costumes ready and like for me like it feels like such a potent thing i think also because typically as a kid i only had the one costume i was rocking for a Halloween stuff every year like each well like in one year oh yeah you had one costume for that year okay and like i remember like in sixth grade when you have kids who have birthdays around this time like they might have a Halloween birthday party that's a costume party or something and i had to wear my same damn mad scientist smocker
Starting point is 00:23:54 fucking three times somewhere and by the time Halloween came around and it was like oh you'd be the mad scientist so that kind of in me put a thing where I was like where I was like goddamn Britney got fucking five different fucking costumes
Starting point is 00:24:05 and each fucking party we go to costume changes so for me I'm like a really you hold your hand you hold your cards close and you hold you play it closer to the day I think it's probably just inbuilt from my own trauma
Starting point is 00:24:19 from having to wear the same damn mad scientist smock constantly I mean, I have a, like, go-to costume that I can just throw on if, you know, if it's an off-season thing, you know, independent. This year I'm, I'm Poseidon. We're doing a family theme of Greek. What kind of wig is that?
Starting point is 00:24:41 We're working on it. It's going to, it's going to be a beard wig and a hair wig that I believe is blue is the one Poseidon got blue hair? No, not necessarily. But it's going to give, it's going to give a. ocean vibe. I like that. Okay. But, you know, I got my Jedi on standby in case it's needed.
Starting point is 00:25:02 See, when I, like, before the fire, I had so many wigs. I could just throw a wig on a weird outfit. And people were like, hell yeah, brother. I'm like, you look amazing in a way, by the way. You are one of my favorite. Like, you, I have a friend Todd who looks amazing in a long wig and you are also on that list of my favorite people. I just got to throw it on.
Starting point is 00:25:22 Warren Michaels. I just got to keep walking Lauren Michaels every day. Not just because you're funny, but because of how good you are with Wage. I don't even do that. Would you have any character bits? No, right, I got this wig, bro, take it in. Look at me, put the blonde wig on. The way you comb the hair out of your eyes is really amazing. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:25:41 Look, when you don't got it, you fantasize constantly about having hair. So it's just the thing I always think about how I put it behind my ear. I will say my kid, like doing my kid's hair. I'm like, God, what a head of hair on these little fuckers. Oh, yeah. It's real fun. Same with mine. Just like, get in there.
Starting point is 00:25:57 Yeah. He got pictures, picture day to day. And the way I was like, no, let me just get a little more volume right here. Looking like Diedalas as soon or some shit. I love doing my kids there. All right. For you? Overrated?
Starting point is 00:26:12 For my overrated. All right. First, it is Indigenous People's Day. So I do have to just shout out for overrated. The founding myth. of America. So obviously Columbus, it's for some people,
Starting point is 00:26:27 it's Columbus Day, evil fucking in this house, Christopher Columbus is a hero. Exactly. But he, you know, quote unquote, discovered America in 1492.
Starting point is 00:26:41 The Pilgrims came in 1620. And I, I just think it's like one of the biggest, like the question of why, why 130 years, elapsed, uh, between those two dates is something that people like don't talk about that 130 years. And the reason is was because it was full of indigenous people, like thriving, doing great. Uh, and, you know, when people would come over to try and, uh, quote unquote,
Starting point is 00:27:09 settle it, they would either get like beat back if they were obstinate or they would just join up. They had a much better way of life that would, like, that was a major problem that Benjamin Franklin wrote about that at the time when it was like, how do we keep all of these people from just going and living with indigenous people? Because the brand is strong. The second they see it, they're like, I'm having that.
Starting point is 00:27:36 Their way of life is so much better. And a lot of the founding fathers also, like, recognize that and stole a bunch of ideas from them and they never gave them credit. But, yeah, there was a one-way street of defection, like white people,
Starting point is 00:27:49 quote-unquote, going native or going, or going savage is what they called it at the time, was a massive problem. No problem with indigenous people wanting to join. Indigenous people wanting to join the white society was like, there were like a handful and they became massive celebrities because they were like, see?
Starting point is 00:28:10 But in the early 1600s, like a plague swept through and that's, and it was brought by white people, of course. and it wiped out the indigenous population. And the story of the settling of America was actually just white people showing up and being like, man, there's all these houses here
Starting point is 00:28:32 that we can just move right. Like there's journals from the, like, Plymouth, from like Plymouth Rock where they're like, yeah, we moved into the homes of the dead indigenous people and we're like using their bowls. And it was like they moved into a post-apocalyptic society. and all of it, like, from pre-built towns to, like, the way the forests were cultivated perfectly for survival and, like, all of these different things that they just completely
Starting point is 00:29:04 wrote out of, like, how it was happening that, like, this was a post-apocalyptic society from a thriving civilization. And they just were like, yeah, we showed up and kicked some ass. And it was like, no, you battled the post-apocalyptic remainder of a thriving society. And prior to that, you spent 130 years being like, nope, not going over there because that's, people live there. And had the good fortune to be like, oh, and then I can just take over their inbuilt infrastructure to sort of have the foundations of my own colony here. Yes.
Starting point is 00:29:43 Yeah. I mean, it feels like very American too. It's like always no recognition for the momentum. and which is carrying you in the future now and be like, yeah, yeah, it's like, and we're doing it all. It's great. It's like, no, actually, you came and basically all of these people were displaced, ethnically cleansed, and you're like, oh, at least I got bowls now.
Starting point is 00:30:03 So I don't do that work anymore. You're a gifted-a continent, like a pre-built continent and showed absolutely no gratitude. And now are, you make movies about hauntings. They're like, this is an Indian burial ground. That's the only way that they give respect to just like feel vaguely, deeply guilty about it. So yeah, always, always want to shout that out on Indigenous people's day. Next year, it'll be Chris, it'll be Colombo Day. That's right.
Starting point is 00:30:35 Yeah, we're going to do a Colombo episode on Chris Per Columbus Day. I also have a kind of a Conti, the Halloween one for my overrated. Just Halloween decorations where the entire yard has been art directed. like the lights all have a theme and they've like chosen a color palette. Like I just... You mean the antithesis of your design style? Yes, you say the antithesis of your design style. Yeah, our holiday decorations were all bought from different stores in different years.
Starting point is 00:31:07 Makes sense. In different moods. Yeah. And like some of them have been put up by my eight year old and some by my 10 year old and some by us. And there's just something. And you can tell that, by the way. Like some of the shit is just falling out of trees and some of it, you know, it's a little better. I'm not going to say who's is whose.
Starting point is 00:31:26 Okay. Mine is falling under trees. But there's something about everything looking like it was put together by the same set designer that like feels, again, this could be jealousy, but it does feel like I'm at a Halloween themed business instead of at a house. You know what I'm saying? It's definitely jealousy, but it's also not misguided. It's not misguided. because you would be like, damn, because you go, God damn, what money they fucking spend it on this shit.
Starting point is 00:31:52 Yeah, because it's like all one, like, they did it all at once. I get that feeling too, like, especially when I was putting up, like, Christmas decorations this last year. Not that I lived in an area where, like, people are going, like, oh, ham with it. But, like, I remember putting up my very normal, like, old school, like, primary colors, Christmas lights
Starting point is 00:32:13 with the big bulbs like that we used to use in, like, the 80s. Yeah. That was like, John Travolta as Bill Clinton themed. Yeah. Precisely. When you say primary colors. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:32:22 Thank you. And then I remember seeing like a really nice one where like clearly someone had like a bucket and like a lift truck like a true like a proper equipment to put things. And I was like that looks great. Don't get me wrong. It looks great. But I realized too like the magic is also you kind of like seeing the person's collection of like just their crisp because that's more. normal. Most of us aren't hiring a company to just put shit up and then take it down when the season's over. It's an accumulation of your, like, trinkets that you fucking adore in your little house with.
Starting point is 00:32:57 And I think it's more fun. When the Christmas lights are evenly spaced along, like, the edge of the house. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That, yeah, that doesn't feel like Christmas grip. No, yeah, yeah. You want to see, like, the stressed out familial arguments present in how it's already designed. You're like, oh, somebody was getting angry up there, putting that. it looks like they just tossed it over the chimney at that point. Like one colorful string and then like a bunch of white ones over there and then, you know what I mean? Like some yellow ones that don't quite match the white ones.
Starting point is 00:33:30 Yeah, but you bunched up the slack around the corner and just said, fuck it, bro. Nobody's going to look back here. That's right. Yeah. Anyways, congratulations to the people who have successfully directed. Congratulations to you. So happy for you. Everyone's talking about it.
Starting point is 00:33:47 It's probably what you wanted, right? Yeah. Oh, man. Yeah. Just saying a lot less foot traffic for the witch this year. Oh, man. Don't tell me that. This was just thrown up.
Starting point is 00:33:56 This hasn't been fought through as a cohesive theme. Can you dress it like Sidney Sweeney and put it in like novig.com underpants? Novig.com. Yeah. Well, we do have a sponsor. We're working on a sponsor for our Halloween decorations. Oh, great. All right.

Starting point is 00:38:29 I caught up with my good friend Jojo to talk about her music, her career, and what she's been up to. Don't invite me to karaoke. I'm going to make it weird. Someone's going to try to sing, leave get out, or too little, too late, or baby to you. Oh, no. And I'm going to be like, okay, cool. I also caught up with Wally-2-67 for a conversation that covered his story, his perspective, and plenty more. I don't even call it cheat day.
Starting point is 00:38:51 That's a life day. I'm not doing nothing. Don't try to be slick and just go Sunday. Go Wednesday. This is what you do. Sleep later. Make a reservation for the rest of the round later. Just chill.
Starting point is 00:39:02 Listen to the music you want to listen to. Just enjoy it. It's going to be all right. Nothing's going to have you. You're going to wake up Wednesday. I'm like, uh, and you're going to feel better. And those are just two of the many recent episodes of the Questlove show. Listen to the Questlove show on the Iheart radio app, Apple podcast, wherever you get your podcast.
Starting point is 00:39:23 Peace. And we're back. We're back. And Kelly Clarkson was all over the news this weekend. But news, I mean, like, social media. But even it got to, I was even, it pierced the veil for me when I was just like, I try not to go on social media a ton. And immediately, people were ambiently talking about it already.
Starting point is 00:39:52 And I was like, what the fuck is going on? It was like a real whiplash situation where, like, so she tweeted out an anecdote about a recent trip to a Brooklyn store called Art of Play. and she basically compared it to that scene in Pretty Woman when Julie Roberts gets shamed at a fancy rodeo drive store. She said a clerk looked at me as if I couldn't afford it and was told he could find something comparable for me, adding, wow, dude, you're an idiot and just lost a huge sale.
Starting point is 00:40:26 Which, okay, so I don't think... I like as you say, if you enjoy being treated, like Julia Roberts. Like she literally, she was like, if that's what you want, then for sure, check it out.
Starting point is 00:40:39 Thumbs down emoji. Yeah, thumbs down. Okay. Oh, aren't we? Oh, God. What happened? Kelly Clarkson? I do think that there's a difference
Starting point is 00:40:48 between Rodeo Drive and a Brooklyn puzzle store. Yeah. I can definitely see the employees at a Brooklyn puzzle store being a, not super nice to you. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:41:05 Maybe they just didn't like your whole vibe, though. You know, like that feels more likely at a Brooklyn Puzzle store than like, you can't afford to shop at our puzzle shop. No. I feel like if anything,
Starting point is 00:41:17 it's like one of those things where you go to a store that like a cool store and even the motherfuckers that work in there, they're too cool. They're also too cool to even help you. They probably knew exactly who you were and like that was the problem.
Starting point is 00:41:29 It wasn't like them being like, who's this point? person. They were like, oh, this is television's beloved sweetheart, Kelly Clarkson. Fuck that. Oh, oh, hey, Justin Guarini's girlfriend just walked in.
Starting point is 00:41:43 Right. Justin Guarini, that's so obscure. Yeah. So she was just trying, I mean, it looked like from the review bombs, I read. Yeah, so this looks like a pretty straightforward, you know, puzzle, like one of those knick-knack stores
Starting point is 00:41:59 that usually don't survive recession. It, uh, yeah, yeah, exactly. It's, it's got a funky writing. Like, it's got a sign where they've made the font to look like it's handwritten. I love that. Art of play. Uh, so, I don't know. I do also just like something that even in the initial wave, I was like, I think it's a little
Starting point is 00:42:21 weird that she turned it into a can and can't afford situation. Yeah. Like, there's so many other explanations. You've already lost. Yeah, yeah. With that framing. So people review bombed the store. Somebody was standing outside of the store with a we stand with Kelly sign for at least a second long enough to get a photograph taken.
Starting point is 00:42:45 It's crazier that like Kelly Clarkson has stands outside of places where she's been, you know, mistreated faster than even like Andrew Tate could get people outside of his fucking jail. Yeah. Just that's, that to me is actually kind of one of the most eerie things is that. Within hours of this tweet, someone has a we stand with Kelly outside of a fucking puzzle store because she said, they treated me like I was one of you broke boys. This is what I'm getting from it. I'm like, what happened? Kind of. And I know a lot of people love Kelly Clark.
Starting point is 00:43:21 Yeah. No, I'm not the problem with that. I'm just here to give an outsider's perspective. And one thing that I, like people are really jumping like. like, C-Saint, like from one side to the, all the way to the other. And they're like, you know, Kelly Clark's was being, you know, treated like shit. It was pretty one, just taking her at her word. And so next, the next development is that the store owner is like, okay, so she was trying
Starting point is 00:43:52 to buy something that wasn't for sale. And that is permanently attached to the wall. All right, Wonka. How much you want for a golden goose won't? All right, Wonka. Hitting it with that shit. Come on. And so it became a real, like, he said, she said, store said, Kelly Clarkson said situation.
Starting point is 00:44:14 Because then she clapped back and was like, oh, okay, well, what about this picture of the very thing she was trying to buy in a five-week-old Instagram post with a for-sale sign on it. But it's like, I don't know yet. get changed. Either way, it's like, see, the thing, getting caught up
Starting point is 00:44:35 in the minutia of it all is just so strange because I think just on it from, from jump, someone who is a millionaire complaining about not being able to buy
Starting point is 00:44:44 something at a toy shop. Yeah. And using your platform is just like odd to me. Like, and it's not like, you weren't like violently denied service
Starting point is 00:44:54 or discriminated against. If, if what we're reading is right, you asked to buy something that wasn't for sale and even if it was... I've yet to see a version or be able to conceive of a version of this where it's justified from her perspective.
Starting point is 00:45:08 You know what I mean? Yeah, I mean, I could also see something like this where she goes, oh, I'd like to buy this thing and they go, oh, that's actually not for sale. Right. Name your price. I'm really serious. I would love to have this in my home and really there's no, money is not an object. And they go, unfortunately, this is actually, it's part of the store.
Starting point is 00:45:27 So it's just not for sale in any capacity. at any price. But we can maybe find something comparable that you could buy. Oh, something comparable for me? You don't think... I'm trying to be charitable as much as possible to Kelly Clarkson
Starting point is 00:45:44 for her to be justified in tweeting about this shit. Yeah. But it's like... And I can totally see the clerk being an asshole, like I'm sure, like for it to get this sort of response. It's just like when, like, even in the very first tweet when the thing is you wouldn't let me pay whatever like you you wanted for this. It just feels weird.
Starting point is 00:46:12 It's like, yeah, I don't know. That's kind of there. I just don't think it doesn't matter how you're treated, motherfucker. You are worth millions of dollars. Yeah. You are on a TV show. Yeah. You don't, I don't give, bro, if someone is working in sales, yeah, bro, they were fucking
Starting point is 00:46:28 rude. Yeah. You should be like, man. I'm glad I'm fucking killed. I'm glad I can walk in here and offer people fucking 15 racks for a fucking bird that was installed on a wall somewhere. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:46:38 Like, that is what it was. Give yourself some perspective. She's like, yeah, no. And then here's a price tag that says $15,000. So I would have paid that.
Starting point is 00:46:46 And it's like, you would have the fuck is going on with this thing. This bird better fucking learn my name and, you know, be my constant companion. I just don't, I don't get it. Like,
Starting point is 00:46:58 even if I'm a fan of someone, you got to know what the era we're living in. And like dunking on salespeople, when you're already doing a thing that most people cannot identify with, I'm not like, I get it, I go into stores all the time. I'm like, how much you want for this part that's inbuilt the store
Starting point is 00:47:16 that's not for sale? Right. And I'm serious, God damn it, because I'm rich. Let Kelly Clarkson spend $15,000 at your store just feels like such a weird thing for this moment. But I get it.
Starting point is 00:47:27 People are so like, she has fans who, like, you know, we're like all roughly the same age, like that first season. Like, I get it. I was there. Powerful voice. Powerful voice. Powerful voice. But I just don't think that's not a battle that we need to hear about of.
Starting point is 00:47:44 It's like, Goliath being like, this motherfucker hit me in the rock. And I would a rock. Right. Yeah. And you're like, I don't know. Okay. Sure. I just don't.
Starting point is 00:47:53 I think everybody's been treated like shit by like a customer service person or, you know, something like that. And so people are probably grafting their own bad experiences, but this just doesn't feel like that's what, but like, this is the thing to represent that. Yeah, it's like, oh, because yeah, like, to my point, it's like, because certainly all those people, even if they've had a bad experience in a sales, like, uh, context, they've also, they can appreciate the experience of trying to buy a thing that is not for sale and saying, just name your price. That's not. Yeah, that's not the one. That's not a universal. That's not universal. That's not universal babes.
Starting point is 00:48:32 All right. Other people who want viral over the weekend, famous people, Ben Shapiro. People are mad at Ben Shapiro. Because of his ice movie? We'll get to that because there is a development and the Danny Trejo side of that.
Starting point is 00:48:48 Oh, that tweet. Yeah, man. Yeah. So he tweeted about the Chicago White Sox at a time when the Chicago White Sox were up 2-0, they had incredible vibes. Like they had like all these players who had like really fun celebration videos
Starting point is 00:49:07 and they were just people were like on board with the Chicago White Sox. People were like, I mean the fucking the Pope is a White Sox fan. Like this seems like a team of destiny. Yeah. They're up to O in a first to three game series against Cleveland.
Starting point is 00:49:23 Yeah. And he tweets. And fans were immediately like, fuck, Ben Shapiro just cursed the Chicago White Sox. It's like Drake wearing the fucking uniform or some shit. Yeah. No,
Starting point is 00:49:35 Ben Shapiro just cursed the Chicago White Sox. One fan commented under his post. What was he saying about the White Sox? The best thing happening in America right now is the Chicago White Sox. Just saying. Oh God. Just saying. It wasn't even like a political thing.
Starting point is 00:49:51 That's what's scary about it. I'm sure the fans like, he's trying to get in on this shit. What are you doing? What are you trying to get the fuck away from our fun, bro? Well, don't just say that shit. Why don't you keep our team's name out of your mouth? Anyways, that's exactly what happened. After his endorsement, the team never won again.
Starting point is 00:50:08 They dropped the next three games and were eliminated in the playoffs by the Guardians on Saturday night. So shout out to Cleveland. Yeah. Shut up the fucking rays. They swept the Yankees. swept the Yankees. So, yeah, raise the Guardians,
Starting point is 00:50:27 Dodgers, the Brewers, which doesn't look so good for the Dodgers at the moment, down one out. No. I mean, they were, look, it was a close game, but I definitely, seeing how they were playing,
Starting point is 00:50:42 yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Anyway, this happens. It happens. There's a, so there's also a post going around from Danny Trejo's son, saying that his dad was misled into the Ben-Rapiro movie. His agent was just...
Starting point is 00:50:57 Agents like need to hire us to come through and just be like, hey, so here's the political landscape dips shit. So his agent was like, this is a complicated movie about complicated people and the only hero involved
Starting point is 00:51:13 is you, Danny Trejo because you're a shop owner and like didn't tell him the Ben Shapiro was involved. And then weeks into shooting on the movie, people caught word. It was a Shapiro joint. And Danny Treo's son was like, he, I had to be like, this is who Ben Shapiro is. He didn't know who Ben Shapiro is.
Starting point is 00:51:36 He's 82. Right. So now he's like, and he's contractually prohibited from like criticizing the movie and criticizing Ben Shapiro, which I don't know. I don't know contract law. it does certainly seem like there are times when people are doing press for a movie that they fucking hate. You know what I mean? So I don't know if this is one of those situations.
Starting point is 00:52:02 I will just say when everyone hates you so much that they give you, like that you being associated with a movie is like, fuck, I really don't want to even touch this. and that they give you magical, like, season-ending baseball powers. Right. And you're only, like, this is also true of, like, Ted Cruz, but Ted Cruz, like, I understand what he's doing. He's, like, there to help rich people and, in turn, be helped by rich people and get rich and be powerful and, you know, he's soar on. But Ben Shapiro is, he just wants to be a popular public figure.
Starting point is 00:52:41 And, like, he just has such a sting. Like, I don't know, man. It's so... Maybe get out of the limelight. Let's rethink this career. I mean, this is, I was saying even with this, this is a second daily wire thing Danny Trejo has done. So I'm having...
Starting point is 00:53:01 Yeah, he was a voice in that Adam Carolla, Mr. Bircham series. So, like, I'm not as... I'm like, look, bro, I get it. You're an older actor. I have friends whose parents, like older actors and you got to keep your sag health insurance and shit you got to be you got to be earning a certain amount to keep your fucking health insurance that keeps you alive because the second you're off it like you're fucked yeah i could understand it's like bro i have to take i have to
Starting point is 00:53:31 make a certain amount to keep my sag health insurance with this year sure sure um again i would be like it's kind it's a pretty shitty move dude um but to act like you don't know anything i think is a cop out i don't know any I would also maybe, and his agent, you know, it's not like Danny Trejo's at UTA or some shit. You know, so this agent probably figuring out like, bro, we got to get every fucking gig we can get. So I'm going to just say, hey, it's a movie about ICE and leave out some other details to get him to sign the dotted line. And I can get my coins. Sure, sure, sure.
Starting point is 00:54:03 I can totally see that too because this is what happens with any sort of entity that revolves around a singular person being like the profit engine. is like at a certain point you're going to get advice that isn't in your best interest it's also in the best interest of the people that are relying on you to be working you are a company
Starting point is 00:54:21 and they're going to make some decisions for you that aren't going to work out. And he said like it's not even his son is also like it's not even like pro anything. I'm like come on bro. Yeah that was like one of the things
Starting point is 00:54:32 he was saying. I thought he was saying that's how it was pitched to him. He said he was booked on a film and he said it was pro well he said the way it was pitched was that it's complicated, but he said it was, he said that it's, maybe it was presented as that,
Starting point is 00:54:45 either way, it's like if you read the script, you, whatever, man, it's, this is where we're at too, because it's funny, you have people who are at the, sort of in the twilight of their career
Starting point is 00:54:56 and are probably more open to doing like whatever. And Danny Trejo was never like, being super intentional about the things he was in. He was definitely, he was like, bro, I'm lucky. I can just start working. Let me just,
Starting point is 00:55:09 let me just fucking get these checks. But, yeah, it's, you got, at the end of the day, you got to know what the fuck you're getting into, especially with something as charged as a topic like that. If it's that complicated and it's presented to you as that complicated, then you, then you owe it to yourself and your fans to know what the complications are and how you're, you know, reckon with those. All right. Let's take one more break. We'll be right back to talk about ICE. The Hard Rockback Casino app is here, Ontario, with exclusive games. like hard rock and reels, hard rock collectum, and hard rock gold blitz. Starting point is 00:56:14 Oh my God, Lexi, we have a new podcast. It's called Don't Lie to Me. I'm Lexi Youan. We're two best friends, 22 years apart, but so close at heart. And I'm Lisa Di Giulio, the old one, which means we have wildly different references, occasionally different opinions. And at this point in my 50s, I've lived it all. I'm not going to get anywhere fighting. That is wild. I learned that about you today. Now in my 30s, being the founder of new shoes, good taste is. is my business, and I've always got something to say. If men were just honest about this,
Starting point is 00:56:50 there would be so much more peace in the world. We're going to talk about dating, relationships, beauty, getting older, and a little wiser. We're best friends, but we don't always agree. Because you told us how accommodating you are. Obviously, I would do what I think I could do to fight the fight, but there's only so much fight I can fight. Don't lie to me.
Starting point is 00:57:08 Don't lie to me. Don't lie to me. Don't lie to me. Don't lie to me. Liar. Listen on the IHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. I don't really care. I'm Hamza.
Starting point is 00:57:22 And I'm Martin. And we're the hosts of Out of Character. It's a podcast. I know. There's a lot of them to listen to these days. How are you going to get to us? Well, there's a specific reason why you should listen to us. We are the best podcast in the entire world.
Starting point is 00:57:35 I swear. I know, bold. But why don't we list some of the things we might talk about on a regular episode? So sometimes we'll talk about, I don't know, the Uber driver we just had. And how nice they were, or if we tipped them or not, come and find out. Sometimes we'll talk about that weird news story from last week. It's the one you're thinking about, trust me. Or maybe we'll talk about music and what's happening in the underground or drama and music or TV shows or the Met Gala and what the actors wore. What we're saying is we're not afraid to talk about
Starting point is 00:58:05 everything under the sun. And if you want to see what that's like, come join us. It's a place where everyone can hang out, anyone. Wherever you're from, whatever you're like. You're welcome. Listen out of character from Will Ferrell's Big Money Players Network on the Iheart radio app, Apple Pods, or wherever you get your podcasts. If anyone wanted to commit a murder, up here would be the greatest place in the world to hide the body. But no one will find it.
Starting point is 00:58:33 He acted friendly. He talked friendly. He sounded friendly. They all knew that I did the scary boogie stuff, and I said, maybe she'll find out where this girl is. I saw him violent, backhanded a bow. And that's exactly what made us all think he had something to do with it. The clock is ticking down and the woods are calling.
Starting point is 00:59:00 There are a lot of demons in Putnam County, but I've met the devil and he's real. I'm Paul Solitarev, and this is season two of the devil's quarry. Listen to The Devil's Quarry Season 2 on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. And to hear The Devil's Quarry Season 2 ad free with exclusive content, subscribe to Lava for Good Plus on Apple Podcasts. Hi, it's Chelsea Hanler from Dear Chelsea. This season, we've got some awesome guests ready to dole out advice. Guests like Portia Williams. I like the wave of adult onset.
Starting point is 00:59:47 lesbianism that has taken a hold. I think there's right. I have a girlfriend of mine who I think is really becoming attracted to me that I need to nip in the bud. Oh, please nip it. Nip it because now that I have people know, I feel like a lot of my friends are giving me an extra eye. Adam Scott. How does that make you feel? Did I look like Tom Cruise?
Starting point is 01:00:07 First of all, do you think? Do you think? Do you think? Do you think? I'm sorry. I started the sentence first. I think I started this interview. Sarah Borellas. I think I have always been a little bit afraid of grief. Of course I wish I had my friends again, but I almost wouldn't change the experience of the loss in my life because it has changed me so much for the better.
Starting point is 01:00:32 Tiffany Haddish, Anna Farris, Carrie Russell, Kristen Johnston, and more. Listen to Dear Chelsea on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. And we're back. We're back. Yeah, man. Nice. Still, I mean, like, there's, at the last week, there was reports about how they are now in hyper fucked, fucked up goon mode just snatching anyone off the street. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:01:07 Trying to raise arrest quotas, kidnapping quotas, rather. And, yeah, in New York last week, 28-year-old Oscar Belgall, and he was tragically, like, he had an interaction with ICE that was tragically predictable. bunch of goons hopped out with ARs in plain clothing. The guy decided he's not about to get robbed and tried to drive away. But as that happened, they fired shots into the car where he was hit in the neck, fortunately survived. Jesus.
Starting point is 01:01:37 People are pointing out the same things, you know, as is the norm with anything involving ice. Like, why are they in plain clothes and masks? Yeah. Why are they shooting guns in the middle of crowded New York streets? Why did they shoot into a car with? a child in it. And people were like, oh, well, they didn't, they didn't know a child was in there. You have to assume. Always. Always. Always. Like, that's. His, so yeah, his five-year-old had a front row seat
Starting point is 01:02:06 to the ICE violence. And many people are, again, asking Mark Wayne Mullen, who's now the head of DHS, like, what the fuck is wrong? I mean, it's like rhetorical at this point. And go, what the fuck is wrong with you guys? It's like, but yeah, what could possibly be wrong when you have a group of people where there's a less than zero chance. Some of them have a documented history of violence or arrest record. His response is very cold and reminds me another group of people who are very callous towards human life. But here's Mark Wayne Mullen trying to explain why they were shooting in a car without a five-year-old in it. Well, let's be clear about this, too. Do you know who knew the five-year-old was in the car? Oscar Bell-Dill. If I'm a father, if I'm a father, which I am a father, which I am a father,
Starting point is 01:02:51 and I'm going to do everything I can to protect my child. I promise you I would have been obeying the lawful commands that were given. So, okay, you'll do whatever you can to protect your child. Imagine some fucking dickheads and plain clothing come out with guns on you. And they're holding some kind of badge, but to you, this doesn't register as anything. This fucking, one guy was wearing a fucking construction vest. Right.
Starting point is 01:03:16 Look like the fucking village people armed to the hill. Yeah. Yeah, maybe you are now in fight or flight and you will do anything to protect your children. But he goes on. The last thing I would have done is put my son or one of my kids in danger. He chose to accelerate at a rated speed, hit the vehicle in front, flare off, and accelerate towards officers. He was a selfish individual. Why would you ever put your child into situations like that?
Starting point is 01:03:47 Now, again, see, this is very, like, reminiscent of IDF. They're using children as human shields kind of thing of like, it's, it's not asking questions here. Why would he do that when he had a children? Oh, I'm shooting into a car with a five-year-old in there. Why is this guy having a five-year-old in his car to get shot at to begin with? That's what the gangsters do that. They have five-year-olds in every seat so that they can just, like, be driven around and protect themselves. Just, you know, our total...
Starting point is 01:04:17 That's actually how they operate. A total lack of respect for human life is actually the fault of the victim. Yeah. He should have thought about that. Should have thought about that. I'm a father. Six.
Starting point is 01:04:28 Five. Six. Yeah. Fucking, yeah, the new one. Yeah, six. So that actually makes me more father than anyone else. Six times the dad of that man. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:04:39 It's just like so fucking terrified. Like, again, that's the head of DHS. Because, again, they can't... they'll never they're not going to be they're not going to admit something was bad anymore right they've they're they're learning their lessons and they're like no the only way we can fucking survive this is completely ignoring when people are rightly uh observing and criticizing what the tactics are so they'll just go further and be like well he was selfish yeah should have been doing that should have been running from us when we jumped out in plain clothes with guns
Starting point is 01:05:12 pointed at him and told him to free with his five-year-old in the car hey if it's it's me. If somebody goes, hey, man, stick them up. I got a gun in here and they got a trench coat and it clearly looks like a banana or something in there. I'm throwing my hands up. I'm getting guys. That's right. Every time. I'm actually throwing my kid at them as a distraction technique. This is also like shooting at a fleeing car in the middle of New York City is so wild. Like it's in a handful of 80s cop movies. But like we know now that that's fucking crazy. The only. people who don't know that that is absurd are, I guess, ice agents who love 80s cop movies. Yeah, presumably love them, some 80s cop movies. All right. BBC is here to fix it all.
Starting point is 01:06:01 They, I mean, this is, so they're basically saying we need to change how we do things and, and meet the kids where they are on TikTok, essentially. It's, yeah, the, so the BBC, they have a new, like, head of, of news and, you know, and part of taking this position is talking about the priorities of the BBC now. And Rachel Jupp is her name said that the BBC News must, quote, adapt urgently to ensure the UK broadcasters meeting audiences where they consume content in an email seen by deadline. The editor wrote, quote, people are changing how they get their news and too many of them, particularly younger audiences, aren't finding us. We need to adapt urgently. We need to be where they are with journalism made for them to do what we need to be to do uh to do that we need to be
Starting point is 01:06:51 clear about how we can improve we need to test i test new ideas and we need to judge our success on outcomes not just activity so just saying this whole thing we've heard this especially as people were realizing like mainstream news outlets like we're doing israeli propaganda yet young people are completely immune to it what's this dang ticot thing that's going on I totally get where she's coming from because we're clearly monoculture is an antiquated thing and there are now an infinite number of ways to get news depending on even how you define the term news but like this whole thing of like, well, we got to meet them where they're at. It just to me it feels like it's not that kids are like, why aren't they wearing jinkgo jeans
Starting point is 01:07:35 and talking about like the coolest new Fortnite skins on the news? It's that that I think for me I look at it too. It's like the news that I'm already just kind of rubbed the wrong way by it. It's like it's like the status quo of Gen X and boomers. And like for us, that's like a thing we are hostile towards. It's like the scaffolding that explains the lack of upward mobility. Like that's what that is built on is this status quo. So young people, and I'll speak for myself,
Starting point is 01:08:04 I don't want to hear stories about climate change from people that will not even come close to seeing the worst parts of it and are speaking about it. with a sense of a total lack of urgency as if they know they are going to see some shit in the future. Right. So that sort of rings hollow to me a bit. And they also, we certainly don't want to hear stories about inflation, quote unquote, that are just blowing Wall Street smoke up our asses and not being real about rampant greed. And that has completely taken over the world. So if they're going to be informed about things and you want to inform them, then be honest.
Starting point is 01:08:42 and actually inform them. And I just don't think that's something that mainstream media is capable of because of the corporate capture and the people that have their hands in it. In both cases, it's corporate captured stories and they're not allowed to tell the truth or at least when they do tell truths
Starting point is 01:08:58 they're like telling the other side of it, which is plainly bullshit. Yeah, we're apologizing if a guest comes on and does utter the truth on the air. And we're sorry about the comments made by our past guest if they do not reflect the views. It's like, what? But that person was just spit in facts. Yeah, it just, I think their solution.
Starting point is 01:09:18 It's much in the same way, like, how I think, especially like Democrats, try and think of the future too, where they're like, what do we do that isn't the thing that's actually like pouring salt on ourselves, the slug of capitalism? Right. Which is what it's going to take you doing things that feel like existentially backwards to you. Right. To capture that audience. The exact opposite of what, how you. been built in the past like a couple decades.
Starting point is 01:09:46 Just interesting like I think more and more people are contending with it like and it's harder and harder to sort of realize that's kind of the perspective a lot of people have when they hear stuff like this. It's like dude, I don't want to keep hearing about these billionaires and like what they're going to fucking do to like let's let's talk. Let's speak critically. Let's be open-eyed about this and what their role is in everything that's happening around me because you're actively just lying to us about what their role is and trying to make them these like benevolent figures in like the most positive version of some of these stories. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:10:17 I think, yeah, I think it's that. And then I just think I feel like so much, like people will find whoever is going to tell them a good story. And I feel like a lot of the problem is that they don't have people like telling a good coherent story. I think a lot of that is because they're based on corporate captured like bullshit and only part of the story. And like a lot of it is incorrect.
Starting point is 01:10:41 but like, I don't know. You need to be meeting people where they are and hiring good storytellers to like take the raw material of the news that you're reporting and find ways to like tell people the truth and make it engaging. And I feel like that's a thing that like doesn't really happen because of just the inertia of like being these institutions that were only built to like present facts and like disconnected. Yeah, because I guess it wasn't news to begin with. it was just PR for empire.
Starting point is 01:11:13 Right. And I think that's the thing that they're having to come to grips with. It's like, well, you know, some stuff was journalism, but other things too was sort of like to give people this narrative that kind of kept them away from really critiquing, you know, what actually ails them. But also like using, you know, they have these massive fact-checking apparatus. Like, why not use that on the 20, like, bullshit stories? that are doing the most damage to how people, like, people's ability to perceive the truth
Starting point is 01:11:47 on a given day. And like that, you know, like, just, it is true. Like, if you meet people where they are by taking it seriously when they, like, believe something that's incorrect and explaining why and, like, finding a way to make the truth as interesting as the why that they want to believe, like, then you're, like, doing your job. But I do feel like it's both a, a, a combination of being beholden to all this bullshit. I really think, like, there are great storytellers working for these institutions who, I think, just get demoralized when they try and report a story and are just, like, told, well, that's, we're actually not allowed to say that unless we run it by the Israeli government.
Starting point is 01:12:30 They end up ceding ground to people like fucking Tucker Carlson or Candace Owens, where people, like, we talk about this, like, we're an outrage over what's happening to Palestinian people. People go, oh, that's bad. But then you have people like Tucker Carlson, they're like, well, Israel controls everything. Right. And now they go, huh? Yeah. But now that's a story that they're hearing because on the news, you're just going to get some sanitized version that doesn't make sense to a person.
Starting point is 01:12:55 It's like, why would they just keep indiscriminately bombing? Like, there's, no one's actually talking about what's the stakes are for anyone. Yeah. Except in this very, like, flattened version. And so, yeah, people are going to look for who, well, I don't, I don't. I don't know what this version is, but this one's telling me a very compelling story, even though it's just laced with toxic anti-Semitism. That's enough because people are asking questions, but if we're not fully discussing things, rather than talking about maybe like why America needs like a forward operating base in the region militaristically is what the exchange is rather than like, they control everything. Right.
Starting point is 01:13:35 And really thinking about all of the nuances that go into a given story. But yeah, hopefully I think I have a feeling that as younger people are now joining the workforce, albeit very incrementally because a lot of people aren't actually leaving in certain industries, will hopefully begin to see something that like begins to resemble something a little bit more like of what we're talking about. But probably won't happen on, you know, channels where, you know, multinational corporations are sort of being clean. We sell gasoline? Can we sell gasoline during this outbreak? All right.
Starting point is 01:14:18 Those are some of the things that are trending on this Monday, October 12th. We are back tomorrow with the whole last episode of the show.
