Hello, the internet, and welcome to Season 66, Episode 2 of Dear Daily Zeitgeist, the podcast where we take a deep dive into America's shared consciousness using the headlines, box office reports, TV ratings, what's trending on Google, and so she means. It's Wednesday, January 23rd, 2019. My name is Jack O'Brien, a.k.a. I read the news today. O'Brien.
Starting point is 00:02:29 Uh-huh. The Beatles. And I'm thrilled to be joined, as always, by my co-host, Mr. Miles Gray. I'm starting with the miles in the mirror. I'm asking him to change his brain. No, Zyken could have been any clearer. If you want to give the world a heart attack, go with Jack O'Bee and Miles Gray. Dang.
Starting point is 00:02:54 Gray. Woo! Na, na, na, na, na, na. Anyway, so thank you to Amber Green at Kohaku or K0H4KU. I think that's what you're going for. For that, Miguel Jackson inspired AKM. Yeah, man.
Starting point is 00:03:09 You really got the Michael Jackson going deep. Like digging deep. Yeah. I didn't know that. Jack! Jack! Oh, man. That's just a reminder of that
Starting point is 00:03:19 Brent Weinbach beat. It's just adding fucking to Michael Jackson lyric. I work. Fucking on it. Fucking on it. Well, we are thrilled to be joined by Brent Weinbach beat. Just adding fucking to Michael Jackson lyric. And we're like, Well, we are thrilled to be joined by the hilarious comedian and my old friend from South by Southwest from seven years ago, Mr. Pat Sorois. Hello. How y'all doing?
Starting point is 00:03:39 Chilling, man. Chilling. Just out here in L.A. Just having fun, picking around, doing shows. And, yeah, it's what the week's been like. How many times have you been in L.A. just having fun, picking around, doing shows, and, yeah, it's what the week's been like. How many times have you been to L.A. before? Once before this.
Starting point is 00:03:50 Okay. How are you liking it? I'm loving it, man. It's a good scene. Like, I got a built-in set of friends out here through comedy, so that's always fun. You just walk in and already feel like you slightly belong. Right. So that's cool.
Starting point is 00:04:00 Well, yeah, and I think comedy is a small world as it is. Yeah, yeah. It's a small, big world all over the nation. Like, it's a little like there's a couch in every city. Right's cool. Well, yeah, and I think comedy is a small world as it is. Yeah, yeah. It's a small, big world all over the nation. Right. There's a couch in every city. Right. Exactly. It's like being a Freemason.
Starting point is 00:04:10 Yeah, yeah. Secret handshakes and shit. Do you feel, this is something we talked about at the beginning in the early episodes, but do you feel like you're more in touch with the sort of national consciousness and what people are thinking about and like people's moods in general as a stand up? I do think that. And I've talked about that before, like with me and my girlfriend, when we watched those,
Starting point is 00:04:34 do you remember that like Craig Ferguson show where they had like the celebrities that come on and get you to guess the words or whatever? Right. Craig Ferguson name game, celebrity name game. The celebrities who are not comedians have obviously just drifted out to sea as their age has gone on. Right. Craig Ferguson, name game, celebrity name game. The celebrities who are not comedians have obviously just drifted out to see as their age has gone on. And they're trying to yell out references and shit that he's like regular everyday people.
Starting point is 00:04:52 They're just like, you eat off it. And it's like, you know, gold. I don't know. That was like, yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:57 Yeah. And it was always like, I remember like, uh, Molly Shannon was on there one time and she was like nailing it. Cause like, she's like, you still have, if you still want to do good at it, you have do good at it, you have to be in touch with what's going on.
Starting point is 00:05:09 And a comic who doesn't follow the news or read Twitter or check out what's going on is just kind of like, what are you doing? Have fun touring your state, I guess. Yeah, that's why comedians who get uber, uber successful Sometimes don't stay at their Highest level yeah yeah It's why you wear leather your second Special because like the first special you're A regular person or the second one you've just been Away from the public long enough that you're like yeah This leather's gonna look fucking tight
Starting point is 00:05:35 Also I got leather money yeah I got leather You know shit well I make it you can't have fun spending it $2,000 pants what Yeah but I have a theory on Celebrities that they stop their wardrobe tends to stop evolving the year they're at their peak fame. So that's why Michael Jordan dresses like that. Yeah, right.
Starting point is 00:05:53 All right, Pat, we're going to get to know you a little bit better in a moment. First, we're going to tell our listeners a few of the things we're talking about today. We're going to talk about the fact that the Super Bowl is set. The Patriots are back, the Empire, the Rams look really good, and the reffing was really bad over the weekend. We're going to talk about a couple of Fyre Festival documentaries. Miles has watched both of them. He is officially a Fyre Festival historian. Trump is putting out Photoshop pictures of himself, which is not surprising at all, but it's just revealing. It's kind of awesome. God bless the media.
Starting point is 00:06:35 We're going to talk about SCOTUS upholding Trump's trans ban and more. The RBG chyron that is exposing theful right-wing story that Ruth Bader Ginsburg is dead. It's not true. It's not true. For someone who just heard that out of context. Right. Yeah. We don't break a lot of news here on this podcast. All right. But first, Pat, what is something from your search history that's revealing about who you are? Celebrity net worth. I look that up two or three times a day. Just different celebrities and shit. It's so fascinating to me. What's one that's kind of jumped out at you as being surprising in either direction?
Starting point is 00:07:18 In either direction? First of all, it's kind of funny that the base entry seems to be 3 million. I've never really seen anybody that's under 3 million. Like anybody from like, like Gary Owen, that one dude in community, like that's 3 million. It's like everybody who feels like that's like, that's your like, like dominoes. Like you're getting in the club, like you have your 3 million. That's where it starts. That's the Annie.
Starting point is 00:07:39 Which leads me to believe a lot of those guys don't have 3 million. Right. A lot of people are always like, they'll screenshot their own net worth and they'll be like, hey, if you can tell me where this money is, at least let me know because I am not worth $5 million. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:07:52 Like, up in the high ones, I mean, who was it? I forget who it was the other day, but somebody who was like, I had not even thought of in years and it was like $400 million. You're like, Jesus.
Starting point is 00:08:02 Yeah. But then you start to like, you'll see the high ones and you'll look somebody up and it's like $18 million. You're like, Jesus. But then you start to like, you'll see the high ones, and you'll look somebody up, and it's like $18 million. You're like, ah, you broke, bitch. Fuck out of here, $18 million. I got a bus to catch. Fuck out of here.
Starting point is 00:08:14 All right, man. What is something you think is underrated? This might have a whole different thing out here in LA, but okay, I know that the company itself is probably preparing for a permanent American underclass, but Dollar Tree kind of blows my mind sometimes. My girlfriend got me onto that. She would watch the haul videos on Instagram, and you can get so much useful stuff and tons of unuseful stuff.
Starting point is 00:08:36 Oh, I didn't know there were haul videos for Dollar Tree stuff. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. They get in, and also you can scratch that spending itch. If you just want to go in and buy a bunch of stupid things. Blackout for $20. Yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly. You just go. And also you can, like, scratch that spending itch. Like, if you just want to go in and buy, like, a bunch of stupid things. Blackout for $20. Yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly. You just go in. It's like nickel shot night and shit.
Starting point is 00:08:49 Right, right, right. So, yeah. Nickel shot night? That's a reference to a John Mulaney bit. Oh, right. Yeah, nickel shot night. But, yeah. So, yeah, that's a pretty wild place.
Starting point is 00:08:59 Like, you'd be surprised. And then also, this is a little scary, they sold more groceries than Whole Foods last year. Dollar Tree, really? Yeah, which is, like, that's what, like, it's almost like they're planning for a permanent American underclass, which is not, like, you know, that sucks. But, hey, if you want a bunch of plastic shit for, like, for very cheap, and you want to deck out a kid's party and make it look dope for nothing. As long as you splurge a little bit elsewhere for the Disney face, you get a few Disney corners pieces. Exactly.
Starting point is 00:09:30 And then the rest of it is Dollar Tree. The rest is lead streamers. Yeah. Yeah. But yeah, it's pretty cool. And I also noticed that their frozen food section is wild. You can get like $1 salmon fillets. Right.
Starting point is 00:09:43 It's like, imagine living on your own and you could actually kind of make a somewhat healthy meal. For sure, yeah. Yeah, if you're like $4 and you're like, I got some vegetables. It's wild. Take a look at a Dollar Tree. Get ready to get blown away. What is something you think is overrated? Man, I thought about this for a long time. I was trying to think of something else
Starting point is 00:09:59 and I got to go with my heart. Overrated in the true sense of being overrated, meaning it's still good, but people think they're better is blunts man I'm getting wow I know I thought about all the heat
Starting point is 00:10:11 I'm about to take on this wait wait okay so okay for people who don't know a blunt is a
Starting point is 00:10:17 cannabis cigar rolled up in a cracked cigar like a swisher sweet yes if you're lame you'll stuff a fucking
Starting point is 00:10:25 Black and Mild. Yeah, you don't know what the fuck you're doing. Anyway, so... Pat, you have a voice like somebody who has taken down a blunt or two. Had a doink or two. Yeah, I grew up in Central Texas. My childhood smelled like grape fillies. The ground
Starting point is 00:10:41 in your town is all blunt guts. Yeah, yeah, it's swisher foils and shit but like that's where that's where it comes that's where it comes in as i get older i noticed that like blunt smoking would apply to like regular marijuana intake versus the inconvenience of an adult life it doesn't correlate you have ash all over the place they stink it's just like it says i like them if they get if they get tossed out of me at a party but like i'm cool with it but like being in the direct vicinity of like somewhere where blunts get smoked every day, you're going to step on something.
Starting point is 00:11:07 You're knocking tobacco all over your rug. Right, right, right. It's just, it doesn't work with the, I feel like my lifestyle as it's changing. Well, it's funny. I was just a fucking, the most loyal blunt smoker for most of my time smoking. Yeah, yeah. And then it kind of got to the point where I used to, back in the day when like blunt wraps would have like a plastic straw on them because like we would get flavored ones out here. Yeah. I used to collect them in a bag with all the homies and we'd be like, yo, put that straw in the bag just so we can look for posterity.
Starting point is 00:11:33 And one day I looked and there was like maybe 800 things in there. And I go, oh, my God, I've smoked this much tobacco. Yeah. And that that's when I kind of it also like the cost effectiveness. Like you can't be throwing like a gram, gram and a half in a butt every day. Yeah, we just got better. Like it's like you put $25 in that house in a session like you don't have bills and shit. Which was funny. Monday was the day off. So, you know, I had to, you know, celebrate with a little bit of a honey fusion Dutch.
Starting point is 00:12:01 And shout out to Earth's Gift in North Hollywood for coming through. in Dutch and shout out to Earth's Gift in North Hollywood for coming through. And I think I lost the, you know, I think as like legalization has brought more like pre-rolls and people just like dabbing and things like that, the interaction of like hand rolling something and smoking it has been lost on me a little bit. So as I was doing, I was like, I miss this. But yeah, I know what you mean. I definitely can't like smoke. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:12:21 And it's like, I, uh, like a lot of my friends I grew up with Like uh Like that's still Like how they Right Get down And it's just like I mean like You got many trips to the storage
Starting point is 00:12:30 Just to get a blunt you're taking Yeah right I just think that It's time to If they show up at a party That's cool but Large over Over enthusiasm over
Starting point is 00:12:38 I just I can't get behind it anymore What are you smoking instead? I'm just I'm a In and out I don't like I like
Starting point is 00:12:43 Being high Doing what I gotta do. Like, you know, like working and shit. But I like doing that and then just like, I like,
Starting point is 00:12:51 you know, joint, bull, boom, down and out. Like, and you know, you're just on with life.
Starting point is 00:12:56 Yeah, because you can't like clip a blunt and then walk around with it all day. Yeah, you're gonna smell, you're gonna walk in places. I live in Texas where it's not that,
Starting point is 00:13:03 Austin, Texas would surprise you that it's not legal yet because you're just like damn there's people's walking around right right but at the end of the day it's still illegal yeah right yeah the texas police no bueno yeah yeah no no yeah they're not like chill yeah i get it which i was smoking some blunts okay all right saturdays saturdays are for the boys i get it you know y'all are under arrest the county just north of Austin is Williamson County, a.k.a. Wilco, as everybody knows it as.
Starting point is 00:13:29 And if you're going through Wilco and you have a picture of you smoking weed as a teenager, they'll arrest you. They'll be like, what is this shit? That's like a crazy zero-tolerance county. So if you take too far a trip up north and then you mess around and have a joint in your car, it's a much, it's a much different trip than if you were just like two exits down.
Starting point is 00:13:48 Right. Right. They're like, what's this Rasta wig? Yeah. Yeah. I see what's going on. What are you listening to?
Starting point is 00:13:54 Is that jazz? It's fucking jazz. The calling card of any true pothead. The Rasta wig. Oh yeah. They just go, Oh, I knew something was up.
Starting point is 00:14:04 Just fucking Rasta wig. You see the cop, you oh, I knew something was up. Just fucking Rasta wig. You see the cop, you take off the wig. Oh, shit, shit, shit. They arrest you because they're like, you know what? If you're not black or a person of color, you shouldn't be fucking around with dreadlocks. That's why I'm arresting you. We're actually very woke here. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:14:16 So I would get behind that move. I'd be like, for once, policing, I can agree with. And finally, Pat, what is a myth? I think that there's a myth that you can like ignite. I mean, you can ignite a stable career off of some wild, stupid stunt or lie. Right. I think like that we're starting to see those things kind of the facades are falling on a lot of people that have tried that. And I think it's just, you can't do it. It's not, if you're looking for like a path to success
Starting point is 00:14:45 and you think, well, what if I do this, if I jump out the gate with this crazy shit or like- Getting the headlines. This crazy political opinion or whatever, then like,
Starting point is 00:14:52 then I'll get in and then I'll move forward. And it's like, nah, man, like it's, I'm not saying that doesn't work. I mean,
Starting point is 00:14:57 there's entire families who've gotten, you know, fabulously wealthy that way. But like, at the same time, it's like, that's not,
Starting point is 00:15:03 that's the exception. It's like somebody winning the lottery. Right, right, right. I just, being like on the, on the fringe looking at it's like that's not – that's the exception. It's like somebody winning the lottery. Right, right, right. I just – being like on the fringe looking at entertainment where I'm at now, I'm seeing so many people like hit that dumb shit button and just be like, I'm going to be this and like get this huge online exposure. Right. And then catapult that into something that's stable and sustaining. Yeah. It just can't happen.
Starting point is 00:15:21 No, the news cycle just chew you up and spit you out and be like, all right, next thing. It's like, oh, yeah, we remember hot take guy. Yeah, yeah, no the the news cycle just chew you up and spit you out Yeah, next thing. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah, we remember hot take guy Yeah, yeah You can like right now a comedy if you I really don't give a shit You just want to like go out a blaze of glory towards the Sun You can hit like a hey I'm a right-wing guy now button and because you have any sort of like Mike presence or any sort of like online Following right, right that'll it'll shoot you ahead next thing. You know, you're in like the national spotlight and then like that's just a dangerous game like yeah nobody likes you anymore
Starting point is 00:15:48 except like 50,000 weird ass people it's just yeah so they're like yeah i'm opening for ben shapiro at cpac yeah i love that yeah are there other are there other examples of that that you were kind of thinking about yeah there's another one that happened name names oh man which of your peers careers are doing badly? Or not in comedy. Yeah, yeah. Let's see. I guess, like, for example, that threatened kid,
Starting point is 00:16:10 the Los Angeles threatened kid with the band who he faked a fan base and went on a whole European tour. Yeah. Oh, right, right. Yeah, like that kid. Like, he doesn't have, like, I don't know. He does not have a path, like, a sustainable career after that. Right.
Starting point is 00:16:24 He's always going to be that kid. We just signed him to this network. He's got a podcast. Should have consulted with me first. Three podcasts deal. Yeah, he may get like, I don't know,
Starting point is 00:16:33 he may, Jesse Camp is like a fucking perfect example. He won a contest. Most people who win contests, you don't hear from them like 10 years down the road. You're talking about the guy who wanted to be the VJ? Yes. And lost to Dave Holmes
Starting point is 00:16:46 ultimately. Man, I felt Jesse should have won though. He was so out of his head. Yeah. I'm a Jesse Camp Ruben Studdard guy. I just both think that was the wrong decision on each guy. It's like I'm a Yankees Patriots dude.
Starting point is 00:17:03 Well, that's a great stepping stone to our first story the Patriots are back in the Super Bowl at this point I don't know
Starting point is 00:17:12 like I'm a quiet self-loathing Patriots fan but like isn't hating the Patriots old at this point
Starting point is 00:17:19 or is it I just don't give a fuck about anything to do with the NFL so sure I don't know I don't have I don't have time to worry about anything to do with the NFL. So, sure. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:17:29 I don't have time to worry about hating Tom Brady. But I think it is tired when I see people who are all about it. But also, I have a homie who is such a big Tom Brady fan that his whole Instagram stories are over the news like, Eat shit, haters! Eat shit! Going nowhere! And I was like, ugh. And then I look at that and I'm like, dude, you got a kid, man.
Starting point is 00:17:49 Focus on that. My high school chat log was like full up with like- Chat log? I'm sorry. WhatsApp was full up with all our- I thought that's what you called a group message. I went to high school in boston in the boston area so my high school friends whatsapp was full of like people being like yeah what about
Starting point is 00:18:11 brady now and then like sending long quotes from people about how great a guy tom brady is and was like who do you think that was from huh that's from the pope like Like James Harrison or some guy who... That was from Nelson Mandela. Respect. Yeah, Jimmy Carter had a few things to say about Tom Brady. Right, that's right. I got a lot of family in New England, and so my Facebook feed's affected as well.
Starting point is 00:18:40 But then also, I'm from Texas, so everybody hates the Patriots there. My Facebook's a cesspool. It's a war zone. It's competing factions. Facebook in also, I'm from Texas, so everybody hates the Patriots there. My Facebook's a cesspool. It's a war zone. It's competing factions. I mean, Facebook in general, not just yours.
Starting point is 00:18:48 I think anybody's. I just think I'm the only one having that experience. I'm like, you guys are getting along great up there, but me, it's pretty bad.
Starting point is 00:18:55 Yeah, well, look, the Rams got in, so, okay, LA out here. YG,
Starting point is 00:18:59 if you saw his celebration when they hit that field goal, oh my God, I thought he was going to turn into a super Saiyan the way he was fucking screaming, my God. I thought he was going to turn into a super saiyan. The way he was fucking screaming. I could have swore he was going to fucking just turn into some other kind of life form. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:19:12 We watched it happen at Mohawk Bend. Oh, yeah. I was there, and there was this dude on a date. And I hope he was already dating that girl. It was two couples. And I hope they were already together because that was the first date. He blew it because he was just like wah
Starting point is 00:19:25 like getting up like pacing all over the bar and screaming and the girl was just like whoa she's like oh I didn't realize you liked it that much
Starting point is 00:19:33 yeah yeah it's like it just sits back down and just screams like a bunch of profanities like so anyways where do you work like
Starting point is 00:19:39 yeah but LA is nothing if not good at getting on a bandwagon oh fuck yeah oh yeah it's fucking invented the bandwagon good at getting on a bandwagon. Oh, fuck, yeah. Oh, yeah. It's fucking invented the bandwagon. They are the bandwagon.
Starting point is 00:19:49 This is the bandwagon. Well, Miles, while other people were focused on the NFL, you were- Not focused on that. Not focused on that. You were doing your due diligence and binging both Fyre Festival documentaries. I watched the Hulu one again. You watched the Hulu one again. After I saw the netflix one right and together they make a really good documentary uh you know like on one
Starting point is 00:20:11 side i think the argument the hulu documentary had or the criticism they had of the netflix one of elliot to belly of jerry media like the guy behind fuck jerry uh being involved in the netflix one i'm like yeah okay i see where their criticism comes from. Like the Fyre Festival or the Fyre, the Netflix one, they didn't really try and obscure it too much. I mean, they do come out and say, yes, Jerry Media was part of the promotional campaign. But the people who were actually speaking from,
Starting point is 00:20:40 like who actually worked for Jerry Media that spoke, like the couple soundbites they had were never like yeah we fucked up it was just sort of like we had no idea which I don't know I mean if that's accurate or whatever when you put the two together the Hulu one says they absolutely knew so whatever but I mean from that part aside like they're very
Starting point is 00:20:58 scathing in their criticism of like Billy McFarland and the other people involved which is like you know I get why you know they may have reserved their, their anger for Billy McFarland because at the end of the day, like this was his whole shit that he put together with Ja Rule and fucked a lot of people over. And I think that was one good thing about the Netflix documentaries. They, they go into the aftermath a little bit more than the Hulu one about like understanding
Starting point is 00:21:22 all the unpaid wages that were all those Bahamian people that were working on the festival. The woman who was like running the restaurant and then like had a GoFundMe go fucking like exceed. Like she at the end of the Netflix when she's in tears because she's like, I basically had to like make all these people whole because I believe Billy. And she raised a ton of money to, you know, pay her people back and also just sort of make herself whole. But I think it was, again, it's a really, it's a really,
Starting point is 00:21:50 really interesting look into the deception and just sort of like the cultish hold this dude had, because a lot of these people are seemingly intelligent, but still went along. And I think that's a lot of it has to do with the fact that he was able to raise money, like at the last minute minute constantly that it never got to a point where they're like, okay, we totally got to pull the plug on this. Yeah. That was kind of the most interesting and I think accurate point that somebody made. I forget who made it in the
Starting point is 00:22:18 Netflix documentary. That's the only one I watched, but they were basically like everybody who was working on this project was too competent. And so the fact that it was a terrible idea that like you would have pulled the plug on like at the beginning or, you know, very early on in the process that just they were just solving one problem after the other to the point that it was just barreling downhill towards. And I mean, there's some great stuff in the Netflix. Yeah, I don't even want to burn half those quotes.
Starting point is 00:22:48 Just watch them shits, man. The devotion these people had to this festival. One man was willing to do the unthinkable. And I'll just put it there. Yeah. I mean, not the unthinkable like that, but putting himself physically on the line. Yes.
Starting point is 00:23:03 For some guy's ill-conceived fucking flex festival idea so and then willing to just be like yeah i was gonna do that on on camera it's it's definitely worth watching there's also uh one dude who's just like shamelessly talking about the first night where everyone realizes like the jig is up but they still have to sleep there and he's like yeah so me and my bros go around like slicing people's tents and like pissing on their beds to keep us from having to like have neighbors next to us right i thought that was like the underrated sociopath move of like but he didn't seem to like think it was like the worst thing
Starting point is 00:23:40 anyone's ever yeah i think what happened was once they figured out they were fucked right they're going to all bets are off mentality yeah right they're like oh y'all fucked me watch me fuck this place down yeah i don't give a fuck who it affects because now it's all about me like you could see some people kind of banded together even though they were you know a bunch of rich millennials who we liked seeing get fucked over it was still like some of them were like you know the ones who were negotiating for food and water for on everyone's behalf and then there was the dude who was like yeah i pissed on this person so they wouldn't have to sleep next to me i'll have time for this shit right uh all right we're gonna take a quick break we'll be right back Thank you. Starting point is 00:26:22 was the target of two assassination attempts separated by two months. These events were mirrored nearly 50 years ago when President Gerald Ford faced two attempts on his life in less than three weeks. President Gerald R. Ford came stunningly close to being the victim of an assassin today. And these are the only two times we know of that a woman has tried to assassinate a U.S. president. One was the protege of infamous cult leader Charles Manson. I always felt like Lynette was kind of his right-hand woman. The other, a middle-aged housewife working undercover for the FBI in a violent revolutionary underground.
Starting point is 00:27:00 Identified by police as Sarah Jean Moore. The story of one strange and violent summer. This is Rip Current, available now with new episodes every Thursday. Starting point is 00:27:22 And so as a Black woman in recovery, hope must be loud. It grows louder when you ask for help and you're vulnerable. It is the thread that lets you know that no matter what happens, you will be okay. When we learn the power of hope,
Starting point is 00:27:40 recovery is possible. Find out how at StartWithHope.com. Brought to you by the National Council for Mental Well-Being, Shatterproof, and the Ad Council. And we're back. And, Miles, what is this Gizmodo story about the president being not entirely honest? Yeah. Breaking news. Man, you know, for all the shit that president trump talks about fake news
Starting point is 00:28:07 i mean he needs to take a look at himself and what i mean look at himself look at the unedited photos of himself uh because someone at gizmodo started kind of like doing some side by side comparisons of uh pictures put out from trump's Facebook and Instagram, along with like the actual news photographs and realized that your boy is photoshopping himself to look a little bit thinner, you know, flatten out his neck lines a little bit and at times slightly augmenting the size of his hands in like a way that's like, yeah, OK, like and it's really subtle stuff like they're just sort of bringing in like his jacket a little bit. Yeah. Or just slightly elongating a finger.
Starting point is 00:28:51 Yeah. But I mean, ever since Graydon Carter called him a short fingered Bulgarian. Right. He's been really on the defensive about his hands. It's almost like that's the 100% fucking true. Right, right. I mean, the second someone calls you up for something and you go, nah, look at this. You lost.
Starting point is 00:29:06 Yeah, yeah. You lost. Exactly. You lost. But yeah, it's like funny because it's like he's doing some like face tuning and you know,
Starting point is 00:29:14 he's trying to get his glow up on. I knew someone was like when he had the dog ears and shit. I was like, I think he's trying to get one over on me. I don't think that's his biological fucking ears. His tongue and that bit. Big eyelashes. Our president's pretty ears. His tongue is that big? Big eyelashes.
Starting point is 00:29:26 Our president's pretty adorable. Has anyone else noticed that? Yeah, so again. It's just interesting to get a peek inside his head. We knew how insecure and aware he was of how he looks and how he wants to look and be perceived. But yeah, when you look at all this, it's really subtle too. Even the editor at Gizmodo who was looking at these
Starting point is 00:29:49 had to do sort of overlay gifs so you can kind of see the difference. Because if you put them side by side, you'd have to kind of squint your eyes, but you're like, oh yeah, look. His torso got a little bit thinner. His finger got like half an inch longer. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:30:04 It looks like they're like, I'm looking at it right now. Like you can definitely see on his, like the good one on the face, that looks like the shit that he's going to paint on the brick walls when fucking phase two rolls around. Right. That looks like that. That looks like the North Korea like status.
Starting point is 00:30:15 Like, Oh shit, that's a handsome guy. And then over here you're like, Oh, that's a, you know, a dumpy,
Starting point is 00:30:19 you know, bucket of shit. But over here I can definitely see the difference. Like, yeah. But you know, again, this isn't surprising, but it the difference like yeah uh but you know again this isn't surprising but it's just funny when again you know for all the shit that it's like about i mean not that i'm even surprised at how this person contradicts himself but uh it's it's a sad
Starting point is 00:30:36 look into a tortured it's like the very definition of fake news like this is in and of itself like a fabricated report yeah yeah like like if you're putting out altered pictures of yourself, you're faking the news at this point. The people who basically invented Photoshop was Stalinist Russia to delete people from pictures who he wanted killed and wanted erased from history so people didn't start asking questions
Starting point is 00:31:02 and also just because he was mean. Yeah, and also putting himself he was mean yeah and also putting himself next to people he never met too right uh i don't know about that i just know that that was like the main thing they used photoshop for was to just delete people from history um and then yeah they said that kim jong-un like they don't think there has been a picture released to the North Korean public where he hasn't been photoshopped. Have we not seen those photos? No. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:31:32 It's just he's always photoshopped, essentially. Well, we see the Western media's photos of him where he's definitely not photoshopped. Right, right. I'm trying to look. I don't think I've seen the side-by-sides of how. Is he just ripped or something? He's always just in a dissolving tank top. It's equally subtle stuff.
Starting point is 00:31:48 It's equally subtle stuff. But it's just his insecurity kind of bleeds through and everybody around him. One of the best movies of last year, actually, was The Death of Stalin. And it just gets at the sort of madness, sort of insanity that takes hold when you are in a dictatorship where the whole thing is just based around one person's right whims and
Starting point is 00:32:13 like Khrushchev is played by Steve Buscemi and Khrushchev ends up like running Soviet Russia after Stalin is gone but like the thing he's best at is just playing this game of like he goes home at the end of these like long all-night drinking events where stalin like has all his guys around him like laughing at his jokes and like telling him stories and shit and like goes home and dictates to his wife everything that he remembers saying because he's shit-faced, but he wants to remember it the next day so that he then can like, because Stalin, that was a way he like manipulated the people around him was like basically everybody got shit-faced. He would make everybody get drunk and then like see how,
Starting point is 00:32:57 like what they said basically. This is a reality TV show. Yeah, that's exactly right. He also invented reality TV. See, I've been saying Stalin way ahead of his time. Right. No, I don't want to say that. tv show yeah that's exactly right he also invented reality tv see get the people on camera shit face way ahead of his time right okay no i don't want to say that all right let's talk about the other damage to uh reality that the the president is doing so uh his ban on trans people in the military was upheld by the supreme court uh basically along the party lines that people were worried about,
Starting point is 00:33:28 you know, in terms of people who were appointed by Republicans versus Democrats. And yeah, now that there's a conservative majority on the Supreme Court, this is the version of America that we exist in. Yeah. Well, it's not like a final decision, right? Because this was just basically about whether or not they could enforce the ban while there are other lawsuits happening in lower courts. So they're like, okay,
Starting point is 00:33:53 you can let it rock until these other, the lower courts decide and they could ultimately overturn it. We don't know, but this decision does not bode well because there isn't like a written opinion on it. There's just the ruling. But based on that, if you look at what the administration argued, it sounds like basically these conservative justices believe the administration's take on this. That is, this policy is a threat to the readiness, good order and discipline, sound leadership and unit cohesion, which are essential to military effectiveness and lethality.
Starting point is 00:34:26 So basically, trans people are a threat to the military, is what this ruling is basically communicating to the world. And that's what they believe, despite all the fucking studies that have come out from experts saying, this is not a problem. And even Trump himself said, as this whole thing was going on he was like this is what i want the secretary of defense to do but until like i see some convincing uh studies on this i'll yet to make my decision or whatever but basically what he's saying is like i was looking for a study that would confirm my own bias here and he got that and then went with it and so it's
Starting point is 00:35:01 just uh it's just it's fucked up it's the same thing with like the muslim ban they were able to sort of skate on these like really lame studies and arguments to be like well it's not a muslim because north korea's in there so it's not a muslim yeah right kind of a thing and so it just shows you that you know this supreme court is all in to do whatever you know the administration wants and it makes you wonder like what would this look like if justice kennedy is still in there yeah or if uh we didn't have calvin i mean look well this is what it is and this is why the supreme court is so important but my parents are both i came from a big military family my parents did you know each did my dad had 22 years in my dad my mom did 20 uh my sister
Starting point is 00:35:39 was in the air force for 10 years and like i i just remember like uh growing up or whatever somebody like especially when i was like a teenager some of my friends kind of sucked it like when the decision was made that person was getting their life together and joining the military i'm really how happy my parents would be to hear that news they'd be like good good you'll get them in they want to do it come on down and there was always that kind of like you know like this is open for anybody to come and do mentality that's how my parents i feel they experienced the military and they were like yeah anybody can come in my dad but it was still don't ask don't tell you know he had soldiers who
Starting point is 00:36:07 were gay and he knew about it because you're the superior is just shit you'd find out and like you know they kept it on the sneak they didn't it didn't bother anybody and like i think that they've been transgender people have been serving in the military for for years and it's just like now they had like it's it's a talking point for for what for what reason there's no – why did this enter the public – exactly, yeah. It's like why did this enter the public discussion? Right. And like they codified the protections for trans soldiers during the Obama administration. I think that has to do with why he wants to completely take that away.
Starting point is 00:36:38 He's like, oh, well, that's what Obama did, so we're getting rid of that because we don't fuck with equality or whatever. But, yeah, this is going to affect around 9,000 members of the military, essentially. And many of them are like serving with distinction. And like their superiors are like, no, these are like good soldiers. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Like no one is out here being like, yeah, thank God. So again, it's just another, like the Supreme Court is taking this like really lame evidence to make these
Starting point is 00:37:05 decisions that are ultimately hurting, you know, the continuity within the military. And you'd imagine, and again, another hit to the LGBTQ community, which is like, yo,
Starting point is 00:37:15 like what the, like what is America at this point? I mean, it's, it's whatever Trump wants. And if you're, if your goal is to build cohesion within a unit and now you're letting everybody in that unit know like,
Starting point is 00:37:25 yo, the tides of history can change tomorrow and you're fucking out of here. Like, what does that tell somebody? Like, it's like, oh, we're a brotherhood.
Starting point is 00:37:30 We just built this. We went through a million dollar training program to foster this brotherhood between us. That's supposed to help us in battle. Just to know that at any moment that can be stripped away just because on somebody's whim. Right. And so it just takes,
Starting point is 00:37:43 it takes like credibility away from that whole thing which i think would just provide even further like you know right disassociation when you think about even like people who have immigrated to this country and served in the military like with high honors and then suddenly like are going to have their citizenship or ability to stay in the country put at risk over this president's decision to be like oh well you know these people like you know, we can't trust them or whatever, despite them putting their lives on the line for the country. Again, yeah, it sort of erodes people's faith and trust that anything, there's any continuity. Yeah, and the systems are just like eroding and slipping away.
Starting point is 00:38:19 It's like I don't have faith in this system anymore. It's just, it's, I don't know, it's odd. But yeah, I mean, this is again, you know, they just have to make sure that the Christian right feels that they're being heard because that's really. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Those are the people who are the most vocal about anyone who's LGBTQ. Right. When you look at, you know, where Karen Pence is working, Mother Pence. Yeah. At a school that is basically just built to discriminate against anyone who is LGBTQIA, you know?
Starting point is 00:38:45 And his response was like, he just played the card of like, I feel discriminated that you're mad about that. It was like, shut the fuck up. Like, that's like, that is such a, like, that's an emotional tactic used by like an 11-year-old or something. It's just like, that's not even, I don't know. It's insane to me. I mean, actually, you're attacking me.
Starting point is 00:39:02 Yeah, yeah. I feel you're attacking me because I hate. And again, it shows you where the discourse is, too, because if that were a school that was like, we discriminate against black children, there would be fucking, there would be, I mean, a lot more outrage, I think, from politicians, too. Whereas this one is, again, people need to fucking raise their voices about this shit. This isn't, it's not an issue that has any gray area. about this shit this isn't it's not an issue that has any gray area this is you know it's just straight up discrimination for people who have no there's no reason that they need to have their rights infringed upon yeah like the only thing you ever hear is people who serve with trans men and women who say you know they were just one of us and they're like a part of our
Starting point is 00:39:40 unit yeah just like anyone else and they were great and you know that fox news would have if there was one person who had one experience where they were like oh it fucked us fucked us up like during training that that person would have their own fucking show yeah yeah yeah exactly but i mean to your point of people on trump's side of things claiming discrimination. We aren't going to talk about the MAGA kid standing in the face of the Native American Vietnam veteran on today's episode because that story is still developing. But clearly, I mean, look, these kids need to get their shit together,
Starting point is 00:40:20 regardless of who ran up on who. They are getting their shit together because Mitch McConnell's pr team or yeah one of his aides is representing uh nicholas sand fuck or whatever the sand man so but one of my favorite tweets from you pat was uh you said that basically the expectation that people oh want to wear a maga hat without being treated like they're wearing a maga hat it's the most prevailing delusion of like the last three years. It's like, you can't like,
Starting point is 00:40:47 again, I say it's like, it's almost infantile when they like, when somebody is like, I've been deleted off of friends, Facebook accounts and they'd be like, it's just a hat. Why should I get treated any differently?
Starting point is 00:40:56 And it's like the world we live in is not the world where that hat doesn't mean anything. Like, right. You know what the hell that means. You're putting it on by very nature. You're being provoking with it. Like,
Starting point is 00:41:04 you don't just think it's a cool hat. Cause Hey, it looks like means. You're putting it on. By very nature, you're being provoking with it. You don't just think it's a cool hat because, hey, it looks like shit. We all know it. If that was just a regular hat that just said like – Even as a blank, I'd be like, yo, the shape is all off on this snapback. Yeah, if it was just like, hey, I went to this fucking store and you should go there too, it would still be an awful hat. Right. Yeah, so it's just – that's just so funny to me.
Starting point is 00:41:22 I see this thing of like I should just be allowed to – like you have a school not accepting gay kids or gay family members. They can't even have gay parents. And that's just allowed to continue. And then you're able to like just be like, well, no, that's just my belief. And then expect to be respected for it. It's like, no, you can't. That doesn't fucking work to me.
Starting point is 00:41:40 Right. When your belief doesn't respect the humanity of other people, then you're cashing out. Yeah. I mean, it just becomes a very high stakes issue to those people. I think to other people who care about that. There was like a high school basketball game, too, I think in Minnesota or something, where like the students, there was a team that was not coming out for the anthem. And it was like a predominantly minority school. I think it was mostly black kids. And then like the students at this high school,
Starting point is 00:42:06 they brought out like these Trump flags and shit. And people were like, what the fuck is this? Like, we know what the fuck you're doing. They're like, well, no, they're just supporting. It's like, no, no, no, no, no. Yeah, I'm just supporting. Like, who brings out like a dad in a fucking basketball game? Like, even like, I would never bring an Obama sign out
Starting point is 00:42:21 just to somewhere where that wasn't Obama related. Like, it would just make no sense to my daily schedule. that even if you did that's not the same thing as a yeah no of course of course yeah it's that's the issue with both sides in it in yeah yeah is that one side represents hate and racism and discrimination towards people which is funny too because it's so clear to the people who are deploying all this Trump, you know, paraphernalia as provoke, like provoking or being provocative,
Starting point is 00:42:50 but no one else is willing to be like, yeah, that's true. You know what I mean? Like, but clearly these people understand the power of it by using it to provoke people. Yet there's still like this disconnect where people would be like,
Starting point is 00:43:01 yeah, the reason why it is because like when you have NBC being like, let's not use racism. Right. The word. OK, now I can say racism. I think that's a real danger that, you know, you're seeing anywhere from, you know, I talked last week about Jake Tapper fact checking Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for some shit that he just basically got from a libertarian think tank. But even SNL over the the weekend like kind of both sides the government shut down really yeah kind of like they were like you know trump was sticking to his arbitrary five billion dollar number but then nancy pelosi was basically being willfully vindictive
Starting point is 00:43:40 and just doing it as like because she's drunk on power. And it was just like a very funny take. Right. It was just a very like superficially they get to feel like they're taking it to both sides. But it's just not a it's not an accurate observation or like a. Well, what you're looking at is you had the president say in the Oval that he was going to own it. He wasn't going to blame anybody. It was purely his decision to shut the government down over using this as a tactic. But then they want to obscure and be like, well, you know, the Democrats could like, no, this isn't what this is.
Starting point is 00:44:15 And I think that's a mischaracterization. But I think that for most Americans, this mainstream culture that the right is like, it has like a leftist bias is it doesn't have a leftist bias it actually has a rightward bias because people are willing to entertain and like pay lip service to this vastly you know right tilted perspective just because it makes them look like they're you know reporting from nowhere or nowhere or giving it to both sides. It's just... The mental gymnastics that people play to maintain that, like normal everyday people that I just will see on the internet
Starting point is 00:44:55 of trying to maintain that both sides are kind of crazy and I'm just in the middle of wubba lubba dub dub, like those fucking assholes. I'm just like, what world do you live in where you think that... It's like you can just walk away from this debate. It's like it like, what world do you live in where you think that like, or like, it's like, you can just walk away from this debate.
Starting point is 00:45:07 It's like, it's unfortunately with the time we live in, this shit's at our doorstep. You can't just be like, both sides are crazy because we're, it's obviously not true.
Starting point is 00:45:14 Right. And it's just like, you're head in the sand again. I don't know, it's just. Yeah, you have one side like vocally saying like,
Starting point is 00:45:20 the wealth divide is killing the country and the other being like, yo, billionaires need less fucking taxes. I don't know what the fuck is wrong with you guys also uh there should be a threshold income threshold to be able to live so yeah that's our take and you're like what yeah you know life got a cover charge now yeah right yeah like oh oh yo your ratios are not good i'm sorry that's right all right real briefly, Fox News put up a chyron over the weekend announcing the demise of Ruth Bader Ginsburg and then took it down and said, oh, that was an error.
Starting point is 00:45:57 This is something that all news outlets have. They have on standby death announcements or obits for various public figures who are sick or might be dying soon. But the fact that they just had that shit so ready to go and such an itchy trigger finger on it is funny and I think telling. Because I monitor the front page of Drudge. Actually, there's only one page of Drudge. I monitor Drudge. Actually, there's only one page of Drudge. I monitor Drudge. And during last week, there was this sort of story he was trying to foment where, you know, because she wasn't showing up to arguments, you know, they were talking about the fact that she might have pneumonia and that she might only have days to live. And they're trying to like put it
Starting point is 00:46:44 out there that she's on her last legs and to just basically start the process of moving on, which, you know, I could see that eventually being a thing that the right tries to put forward that if she is, you know, not able to make it out of her home to come to chambers or something like that, then they're going to try and get her to step down and that shit ain't happening, would be my guess. But anyways, that's a story that- What's the process for the newsroom to be like, okay, I think we need to prepare a package.
Starting point is 00:47:19 You know, just keeping our standby. They have a package prepared on you. For everybody? No, but they have it for almost everybody. Oh, they saw me in San Francisco this weekend? Oh, wow. Yeah. So nearly any person of note.
Starting point is 00:47:32 They have it for a lot of people, yeah. Because they just- No matter what the state of health is. No, not no matter what, but I think anybody who it's like, ooh. They're like, oh, it's your 71st birthday? Yeah. All right, somebody put that package together. Yeah, I don't think there's like an official thing.
Starting point is 00:47:46 They update them and stuff, right? Yeah, they do. As things happen, they go back in and add it and shit. Yeah, and they just have a trove. It was one weird dude that's his job at the network. Right. They're like, find a good picture, get the death and birth years together. Make them glow.
Starting point is 00:48:02 Make them glow. All right, we're going to take a quick break. We'll be right back. And so as a Black woman in recovery, hope must be loud. It grows louder when you ask for help and you're vulnerable. It is the thread that lets you know that no matter what happens, you will be okay. When we learn the power of hope, recovery is possible. Find out how at StartWithHope.com. Brought to you by the National Council for Mental Well-Being, Shatterproof, and the Ad Council.
Starting point is 00:51:39 And we're back. And the government shutdown stretches on. It does seem like there is some negotiation taking place uh i mean weekend offering a bullshit fucking legislation right because also they're like we know we'll give daca people protected status or whatever that's already happening because of the court decisions right so it that's not a thing you're bringing didn't say it was like three years too it was like yeah three years which again it's it's it's nothing it's it's just for the uh appearances that they're trying to work towards it but they're not they're offering nothing substantive uh that would actually make democrats come to the table anyway amid all that
Starting point is 00:52:20 there is all kinds of shit was going on back and forth between uh speaker pelosi and trump last week you know first uh speaker pelosi was like nah fam to the idea of a state of the union happening because it's like what are you going to report on what the state of the union is that it's shut the fuck down yeah right so we don't have anything to say that i she felt it was just inappropriate for there to be a state of the union address given the government shutdown and also the longest one ever yeah and on top of that they're like you're gonna have unpaid people like no this isn't good although kirsten nielsen was like no we can make it happen sure whatever but then like i said uh last week or maybe yesterday uh hogan gidley was saying like he's
Starting point is 00:52:57 like well maybe the super bowl has to get shut down uh because we wouldn't be able to do that it's like look if you can do one, anyway, not important. So Trump, we all know, is super petty and was not going to let a woman get the last laugh. So he denied her use of a government aircraft to take a congressional delegation to Afghanistan to reaffirm our support of the troops and to talk to allies in the region who are all like, yo, what is the president talking about? Just blowing up all these alliances we have. Yeah. Was probably an actual thing that needed to happen.
Starting point is 00:53:31 So then Nancy had a plan B. She's like, fuck it, we'll fly commercially. Keep that under wraps. But someone in the administration got real petty and leaked her commercial flight information that people knew how they were going to be traveling, which was opening them up to grave danger to know, be like the speaker of the house and a bunch of people from Congress were going to be like on a fucking plane.
Starting point is 00:53:52 Yeah, exactly. So people were like, how the fuck does that even happen? Because again, the petty bar has been raised again. So now I mean, that's not petty even. That's like Republican. Of course. Yes. It's dangerous.
Starting point is 00:54:05 It's just malicious, fucking's not petty even. That's like Republican. Yeah, of course. It's dangerous. It's just malicious fucking terrible behavior. And now on Tuesday, the Trump administration was saying they let the sergeant at arms know to prepare for a run through of the State of the Union because the president still is trying to make it happen. And just total disregard for the fact that the speaker was like, you are not invited to do the State of the Union because of the situation. You're more than welcome to do it from the Oval or whatever. And then Mr. Hogan Gidley, again, with a real sassy, he says, we have no announcement at this time. But Nancy Pelosi does not dictate to the president when he will or will not have a conversation with the American people. So, you know, they go back and forth. So maybe SNL does have a point.
Starting point is 00:54:47 All right, let's talk about Academy Award nominations. They were announced yesterday morning, and there were some surprises. I mean, I think the thing most people are up in arms about is that Bradley Cooper didn't get nominated as director. No, that was the snub I gave least shit about, that he didn't get nominated on his first movie out. Yeah, right.
Starting point is 00:55:11 Or all the women that were snubbed. Right. Yeah, there's also that. Very, very incremental growth in that department. Yeah. They said, just to touch on that, of all the behind-the-scenes nominations, 53 are female, so that's all like the behind the scenes nominations 53 are female so that's
Starting point is 00:55:25 about 25 of the nominees that's up two percent from 23 of the nominees last year and 20 in 2017 yeah and even like in the nominated producers five of the 25 are female and one of the 17 producers for our best animated feature is a woman. Anyway. Yeah. But hey, at least Black Panther became the first superhero movie just to get Best Picture or not. Yeah. Yeah. That's cool. Black Panther was awesome.
Starting point is 00:55:55 I was like, really? It was a dope flick. I don't know if it was the Best Picture flick. I think they're taking into the fact that it was such a popular film and a cultural moment. I mean, I don't know how many people are going to say like, this is the most brilliant storytelling. It's just the most solid fucking superhero movie. Yeah, definitely. And I think for that, I mean, that's why I'm not mad at it. But yeah, I mean, like what, you get 10 nominees for Best Picture?
Starting point is 00:56:19 Fucking Black Panther better be in there. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. I thought, you know, Ryan Coogler probably deserved to be nominated for Best Director and Michael B. Jordan probably deserved Best Supporting Actor nominee for Killmonger. I love that. That performance is just so iconic. That was so good.
Starting point is 00:56:35 Yeah. If he changed his whole vibe after that movie came out. Yeah. Yeah, that's going to get him those dope roles. I've watched him since he was on The Wire. I've always been a fan of that dude. And, like, that's cool. That's going to get him roles where,. I've watched him since he was on The Wire. I've always been a fan of that dude. That's cool. That's going to get him roles where,
Starting point is 00:56:47 as they come on, interesting roles where he's a bad guy or a villain or a more gray character. I'm so excited to see that. Rather than Carl Weather's son. Yeah, exactly. Which is also a great role. Yes.
Starting point is 00:57:00 He's going to play Carl Weather's son from Jumping Jack Flash. So another narrative about the nominees is that they scrapped that idea of having best popular movie. Oh, right, right, right. And people were saying that that could have helped maybe because the way they were talking about it was that it would be overlapping. Like you could have overlap. So a Best Picture nominee could also be a Best Popular film nominee. And in that case, I could kind of see it because Bohemian Rhapsody, I think, got nominated as Best Picture,
Starting point is 00:57:36 but it was really a nomination for this other category that didn't really exist. But they were just like, well, we got to have popular movies movies out here A Star is Born would probably have been nominated in both categories Black Panther probably would have been nominated in both categories and Crazy Rich Asians got totally shut out as did A Quiet Place except for best sound editing wait what do you mean?
Starting point is 00:57:58 Crazy Rich Asians didn't get nominated in a single category. Oh for real? yeah. I thought it was crazy that A Quiet Place would get sound editing it's just like yeah you know how? Yeah. I thought it was crazy they had quiet plays when you get sound editing. It's just like, yeah, you know how there was just like nothing? Yeah. Dude, the way they did the quiet,
Starting point is 00:58:09 man, it's like they turned the mics off. So also just revisiting the idea of giving the Oscars out five years after the fact, just looking back at the 2013 or the awards that were given out in 2014 for the 2013 year in film this was actually a pretty solid year because 12 years a slave won a bunch of awards that won i think best director best picture and lapita no one go one for best supporting actress and that was like that was her announcement of like her being on the scene so but there are other movies that like got totally shut
Starting point is 00:58:49 out that kind of have had a place in the national consciousness since then mud I think is kind of a well-liked movie that had sort of an afterlife on cable prisoners which is Denny Vill is that how you say that in french i have no idea uh inside lewin davis uh fruitvale station and uh the act of killing feels like one of those movies it's a documentary but if you're ever going to nominate a documentary in the best picture category that shit was wild and i feel like it's a movie that you constantly hear referred to uh in the five years of that was the documentary of the country where they had like massive like basically genocide and then they went back and had the people who committed the genocide
Starting point is 00:59:39 uh who were still like in power and like enjoying like yeah uh they had them reenact the killings and like they're like still proud of the genocide they committed and then like they slowly bring them around to confronting what they did and like one of the main like guys who killed hundreds and hundreds of people with his hands uh like ends up like having this weird like stomach issue on camera because he's just like the guilt is hitting him but he like can't deal with it it's like one of the craziest things I've ever seen in a movie that's wild and you know shout out to talking through your psychological trauma that gives like great weight to like the power of actually sitting down and talking exposure yeah um movies that got nominated like that haven't really held up quite as well,
Starting point is 01:00:27 like Nebraska is one of the Best Picture nominees. Her was, I remember liking Her a lot the year it came out, and then you don't really hear about that movie anymore. Yeah. American Hustle, I feel like, hasn't held up quite as well. Then Wolf of Wall Street was out Gravity uh 12 Years a Slave so they got like half of the category right I think but I still you know I still think it would be fun if right now we were going back and revisiting what the best movies were five
Starting point is 01:00:57 years ago right like you know with a little bit more wisdom and retrospect as opposed to waging a political campaign about movies that just came out that most people haven't seen right you know oh and then sorry to bother you was totally shut out yeah sorry to bother you was totally shut out one of the best movies it's wild but uh spike lee was nominated for black klansman for best director it was his first nomination for best director what what he was never nominated for Do the Right Thing. Malcolm X. Malcolm X.
Starting point is 01:01:29 I knew he didn't win for that, and I was always like, well, that's wild. He definitely should have won for that. But he wasn't even nominated. This is the first time he's been nominated. That's crazy. Yeah. Yeah. That's pretty crazy.
Starting point is 01:01:42 He's going to be like the- 25th hour, he was never nominated. Like the Leonardo DiCaprio, where people were just rooting for him. He's a deathbed. He's like, maybe this will be the one. And the other kind of notable omission was Won't You Be My Neighbor, the documentary. The Mr. Rogers one?
Starting point is 01:02:00 Yeah, it didn't get nominated for Best Documentary, even though it was critically and universally beloved and made more money than most documentaries of all time. I just watched that. Yeah, I just watched it for the first time. I know when it was coming out, everybody was like, oh, by the watching it, go cry. It's complete not lying. Right, yeah. Yeah, it's by myself.
Starting point is 01:02:22 It's like, oh, goddamn. You're such a good man. Yeah, right. More or less crying. It's like oh god damn such a good man yeah yeah right yeah more or less crying it's like god that's that was the last one right yeah there are no more good people yeah yeah yeah we're all fucked i wanted to be mad about that and then i went and looked at all the nominees for best documentary and like the trailers make them look really fucking cool so uh i don't know but still shout out to mr rogers yeah um yeah still let's still shout the man out what's his first name fred uh okay good to know see i don't even know
Starting point is 01:02:53 his first name i just found out there's this kids show daniel tiger that i thought was just like another you know yes that's a neighborhood flick yeah i. I thought that was just like another like anthropomorphic like animal thing that sold toys. But it's actually made by like the people who made Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood. And like basically the Daniel Tiger character is Mr. Rogers. And I watched my first episode with my son yesterday. And it was the first time where he like seemed not i don't know like he it just seemed like it was like wholesome entertainment uh right you know like he seemed more inspired and like enlivened after watching it as opposed to like when we watch like like
Starting point is 01:03:38 david lynch films rambo rocky right uh my my girl has My girlfriend has two kids, and Daniel Tiger's a little too young for them now, but when I first got together with her, that was like heavy rotation was Daniel Tiger. And yeah, that was pretty dope. It's all Fred Rogers extended universe stuff, man. Right. Yeah. Man, Fred.
Starting point is 01:04:01 Yeah, right. Well, Pat, it's been a pleasure having you, man. Yeah, man. Thanks for having me on. It was a fun time. Yeah. Where can people find you and listen to you? Well, you can find me on Twitter.
Starting point is 01:04:14 It's at P-Z-T-X, P-E-Z-Y-T-X. I made that like 2009, and I think it's time to do that one-time account change. Right. Where you just change it to your name, because, yeah, I thought you should probably do that. So for now, it's at PZTX. So when you're here, let's look for it. Also, I have a podcast called Lie, Cheat, and Steal. Yeah, I wanted to talk to you about this.
Starting point is 01:04:31 So you were saying that the first episode is about – so explain the premise and then we'll talk about the first episode. Yeah, it's me and my good friend Kath Barbadoro. She's an excellent comic. She's based out of Brooklyn now, but we used to record it in Austin. Now we do it remotely. It's basically about Liar – the tagline of the podcast is about liars frauds thieves and bullshitters right and just anytime there's like weaponized dishonesty or somebody just doing something dishonest we get into and the first episode was about the little boy that
Starting point is 01:04:57 went to heaven and it's a book that was written by a little boy who said he went to heaven and then like taken by his like religious ass dad and like just thrown into the public spotlight. Like, but actually it was six years later. The kid was like six. They did a followup story on his birth. Cause I guess something happened with his birth. That was notable.
Starting point is 01:05:14 I forget. I haven't listened to episode in a while, but so then they, the news comes over or whatever. He's talking to one of the guys about the car accident. That's what it was about the car accident. How the little boy said he went to heaven. And so like, they were like, yo,
Starting point is 01:05:27 that should like be a book or something, man. So then like, I just got this dad who just turns out to be an asshole. Right. He's got his, his brain turning. And he just like, God sat down with his son who was like,
Starting point is 01:05:35 uh, is quadriplegic from the accident and like had him write a book. And it was like, he wrote this thing, like this account of like something that he said coming out of a coma when he was three. Now he's nine recounting the story of going to heaven. And it's like he wrote this thing like this account of like something that he said coming out of a coma when he was three now he's nine recounting the story of going to heaven and it's like falling apart and the book is not that tight like it's like reading it there's almost no talk of heaven it's all like just yeah yeah like there's no heaven like exposure kept me strong
Starting point is 01:05:59 yeah yeah it's like they obviously just like coerced it out of this kid and like later out later on you find out like the writing sessions were just like editors like sitting down with them. Like, come on, Daniel. So what happened when you were in God's lap? And he was just like in his head like I made this up when I was three years old. So he's under untold stress. Right. And he's since come out.
Starting point is 01:06:17 Yeah, he released a newsletter saying that he did not see the God. He made it up because his parents were religious and he just said it. He's like, however, he said he, you should pray and read your Bible. He had his little, his little two cents, but his dad has taken that book and like abandoned his family. The wife has said she doesn't receive spousal support or emotional support from him was her quote, I believe. And he's just like gone and like, it became a huge voice in like the right wing Christian
Starting point is 01:06:41 speaking circuit. Yeah. And so he's just like out there, like doing it big. What's he selling people? He's like, I know how to get your kids into Christian speaking circuit. Yeah. And so he's just like out there like doing it big. What's he selling people? He's like, I know how to get your kids into heaven. No, now I think the last one was his next project. It was like self-help shit. Okay.
Starting point is 01:06:53 It was like how to get your life around and like, I don't know, like how to get out of debt and stay loyal to Christ. And I grew up in a Baptist church. So there's, that's a huge market for shit like that. It's like whatever problem you have, here's a guy telling you, yeah, how to do it while also being cool with God and like, you know, people buy it's a guy telling you, yeah, how to do it while also being cool with God and like,
Starting point is 01:07:07 you know, people buy it. So he's like, yeah, so he's out crushing it. So if you like stories like that, that's what we talk about on there. Just these wild,
Starting point is 01:07:13 wild cases of dishonesty. You know, cure your ED with G-O-D. Yeah. Oh man, I have gone over to plenty of like childhood friends' houses for like church events
Starting point is 01:07:23 or whatever and you'll like be reading like their reading selection in like the, and it'll be like, staying intimate over 50 with God. And you're just like, Doug's parents are fucking. But in a weird way. Yeah, but in a weird way. Yeah, that's not cool. They're like, yeah, don't dirty talk. Use praise words.
Starting point is 01:07:41 Oh, man, I'm glad that's not a factor in sex. That'd be weird yeah yeah the oh the religious cult children of god used to tell people to picture that they were having sex with jesus including men had to imagine that they were having sex with were they a top or a bottom i don't know they never got into that yeah like with the recruitment tactics they would send out girls to like like the do the party fishing and stuff. So these guys were like, yeah, yeah, Jesus, got it. Anyway, it's like, yeah, I'm definitely thinking of Jesus over here.
Starting point is 01:08:11 Thanks for checking it out. You're having sex with Jesus? Yeah. Is that okay? I don't think it is. I feel like any pastor would be like, hold on, hold on. No, no, it was real fucked up. And they ended up having all sorts of issues.
Starting point is 01:08:25 What was this? It's called the Children of God at the time, and then I think they've changed their name since, but they basically raised this one adopted child to be their messiah, and he ended up going on a shooting spree and killing the nurse that raised him. Oh, boy. Really wild shit. Miles, where can people find you?
Starting point is 01:08:46 Yeah, thanks. Googling that. You can find me on Twitter and Instagram at milesofgray. A tweet I like because it's something I lived through is from Reductress. Starting point is 01:09:05 you seen it and i'm like what do you think she's like everything brings me joy all right well you have to throw shit away yeah my mom likes to keep shit oh yeah that would be torch for mom to watch that she's like throw it away no she just cut that off yeah not an option everything brings you joy i don't even have to touch it i can look look at it. The whole thing is bringing me joy. Love these newspapers. This is from the day you were born. Shout out to Bay Area Zeitgang, by the way, coming out late, hanging out with us ahead of the show. Starting point is 01:09:46 The crowd was awesome. We hung out with them for a little while afterwards. Yeah. There is a controversial picture in which I'm doing prom pose with one of our fans, and his girlfriend seems not pleased with that. I was just trying to do prom pose, guys. Starting point is 01:10:12 So appropriate for our conversation. Shout out to Justin, too, from West Coast Sunrise, and his lovely partner for coming through. Everybody we met was so cool. We really have the best fucking fans in the world. I know. It's really incredible. And it was great to chill

Starting point is 01:10:39 Megan Amram. So yesterday, Aaron Sorkin was saying how the new young Democrats need to stop acting young or some shit. She said, yeah, sure. I like Sorkin. Sorkin my own dick. She is the best.
