Starting point is 00:02:00 I promise you'll be happier and healthier if you do. body and soul i promise you'll be happier and healthier if you do hello the internet and welcome to this episode of huevos trencheros was that it yes yes huevos trencheros that was courtesy of carlobo on discord uh i'm jack that's miles Yeah. And this is what is trending here at the end of our final week of January 2021. John Chaney, RIP. Yeah. The great coach, Temple. He was one of those first coaches I could remember because he kind of looked like an owl. like I could remember because he kind of looked like an owl
Starting point is 00:02:43 and was also like one of those coaches who like if there was ever a movie that needed real life basketball people to be in the movie like John Chaney would be in there at some point so I've yeah it's a sad thing in my
Starting point is 00:02:59 mind I was like damn he just passed away because for the longest time like I was like he was sort of one of those people you put in your mind that you had assumed he just passed away uh right because for the longest time like i was like i i used sort of one of those people you put in your mind that you had assumed had maybe passed away but no yeah john cheney i mean yeah he made it 93 but what just a great coach who put temple basketball on the on the map temple is not you know a school that was a powerhouse. I don't think, uh, prior to him coming around, but one, uh,
Starting point is 00:03:26 one of the greats. Um, cause he's, I put it like, it's also like how I would think of like John Thompson at Georgetown. Like we also lost in the last year. Yeah. In August he passed away.
Starting point is 00:03:36 So it's just like, it's weird. There are these guys who were like formulating my consciousness around basketball at the time. And we're all just getting old, you know, John Thompson made Georgetown seem cool to me for, uh,
Starting point is 00:03:50 when I was a kid, but it was like, they had dope uniforms. And it wasn't that photo of, uh, Patrick Ewing and Ronald Reagan. That was the other thing. Anybody like this guy gets it.
Starting point is 00:04:12 Oh, other thing anybody like this guy gets it have you seen that photo though of john thompson patrick ewing and ronald reagan no they're in the white house and it's like this norman rockwell-esque thing of like old white guy being like surprise two tall black men uh it's but it's like just like the most contrived like 80s sports illustrated photo here i'm going to send it to you in the chat so you can see it because it's oh my god right like ronald reagan he's such a fucking ham uh and i mean that's all he was he was a ham that was out front while the CIA was doing dirt behind the scenes. Yeah. But the fact that, so they go to visit the White House for winning the championship. And they make Patrick wear his uniform.
Starting point is 00:04:59 Uniform, yeah. Which is indecent. The length of the shorts are- The 80s were a different time. which is indecent if like the length of the shorts are 80s or a different time they were underwear you call that underwear now yeah underwear you're not going out
Starting point is 00:05:16 like that when I I'm old enough that when I was playing like basketball in middle school the shorts still looked like that and like like they were you know from five years before like basketball in middle school, the shorts still looked like that. And like, like they were, you know, from five years before they just had the same uniforms that they'd had for years.
Starting point is 00:05:31 But, uh, I would like try and sag them down. So they didn't like come up that high. Right. Uh, but it just looked like my pants were down. Um,
Starting point is 00:05:40 not a great look. Uh, harsh writing advice is trending yeah it's just like a thing on twitter where I think it started where someone first a lot of people like writers were giving advice and then like
Starting point is 00:05:55 certain takes just kind of got more attention than the others or someone maybe flippantly or seriously was like no other writers are your competition so you have to like think of it like that to like elevate your game and then other writers like other writers are your competition. So you have to like, think of it like that to like elevate your game. And then other writers, like other writers are absolutely not your competition. Like that kind of thinking is so fucked up and is regressive. And you actually have to honor whatever your voice is as a writer to exceed, to excel. And so it's just kind of interesting.
Starting point is 00:06:18 I like seeing these moments where like creative people are kind of giving good advice because there are other ones that are just sort of like you have to just get a first draft done don't get don't don't like psych yourself out that anything you write has to be so good out the rip it's like it's like forming clay like that's the first one and then you refine and refine and refine um and so just yeah it's just a moment that twitter's having. At Chuck Wendig tweeted, harsh writing advice, colon. You have to hunt and eat your fellow writers. They will taste of Cheetos, pink wine, and despair.
Starting point is 00:06:53 But this is how the publishing gods are fed. Sorry. Yeah. Somebody had a tweet earlier this week about how every writer had a writing teacher who loved them and a writing teacher who hated them uh and that is definitely true of me yeah i learned the most from the ones that hated me oh man there was one who just did not like me i don't think i learned that much from her because her advice was not that constructive i read a piece uh in class and she said so the thing is like it's okay to be you know try and be like funny but you don't want to be an asshole and that was her only feedback
Starting point is 00:07:35 on the thing i wrote i was like oh okay like everybody else in the class was like what the fuck whoa this other writer, write something similar. He says, uh, snark isn't wit. Cynicism isn't wisdom and arrogance will open a lot of doors, but get you nowhere in the room with anyone who actually knows what they're talking about.
Starting point is 00:07:55 Um, boom. That's really, I mean, that's good. Don't even bring it here. I just feel like that shit is, I feel like,
Starting point is 00:08:02 I don't know. First of all, I don't think writers are always good at talking about writing like that. Oh i feel like i don't know first of all i don't think writers are always good at talking about writing like oh right right like they're especially their own writing and then i also feel like so much of writing is not something that you i don't know like things like that like don't use this vast like effect is like, right. Sure. Like that's not helping anybody.
Starting point is 00:08:29 I think it's for people who like very like by the most basic version of that, like advice, like actually think like I'm so snarky, like that's my edge or like I'm so cynical, like it makes everything because it's like with comedy. Like you see people who write comedy like that where it's like oh you think just being an asshole is funny like yeah we're past that like we're actually we and that's why there's a lot of comedians now who are like I don't get this like cancel culture so I was like well because your whole thing was just that
Starting point is 00:08:58 you were like the most creatively cruel yeah and that got people to laugh at like fucked up other kinds of jokes but we're we're trying to try to move past that yeah i think right um let's talk about i want to see that thing that was your writing that was that provoked that uh that note back from a teacher it was like a memoir of when i was a kid it was like real she just did not like my uh oh wow oh that's voice okay because the way you said it i was like i didn't mean like i didn't know it was like hate like an irrational hatred
Starting point is 00:09:32 and you're like what is this you're just like taking shit out on me versus like so i would say hate is like people who are very hard on me and at times felt cruel but it was just so cutting and to the point that i realized i'm like oh they just didn't have time to sugarcoat any of their notes like they just cut me open there's a famous like writer at writing teacher at georgetown who's like real mean to everybody but liked me uh but he uh flunked jonah nolan the guy right who wrote memento and like uh mike rabiglia and all these people like uh all had him and uh had a complicated i had a very complicated relationship with him but he was he's like i want to treat you like a you know like you're professionals and oh got you get you used to that yeah his name is uh professor john glavin and the reason the evil character in a memento is named john g is because of him john g was it raped and murdered your wife isn't that the tattoo that
Starting point is 00:10:36 oh my gosh yeah it was it was deep because like he would he would tie criticism to like like stuff that i don't know like when when you read that book impro about like how to teach creative people like improv it's like never tie your criticism to uh them personally uh and he would do exactly that he'd be like i think you write like this because of this thing from your childhood wow okay so psychoanalysis along with just notes on my story no thank you yeah uh the little things is trending because that is the latest hbo max uh big you know movie release that would have been a big deal and advertised everywhere that they're dropping on HBO Max. And it is Denzel, Rami Malek, and in the serial killer role,
Starting point is 00:11:36 we have one Jared Leto. And I think they were trying to hype it up as like, this is the up as like this is the next seven this is the next sound to the lambs early reviews aren't promising but I will always watch a movie in which Denzel Washington is teaching a youngin how to well it has the reviews seem to feel like it was written in the 90s and they're treating it as a period
Starting point is 00:12:04 piece and the writing is it as a period piece and the writing is just as like offensive or like the tropes in it uh there's just one line when it said the little things is 1990s authentic down to its treatment of women wives come in two flavors x and adoring and the film's other female characters are cops or corpses with no in between like huh right uh justice league is trending too because uh so this zach snyder uh the snyder cut released the snyder cut i hadn't fully gotten the background on that i'm still like not fully read up on it but so i didn't realize he left justice league like after shooting it but before editing it and Joss Whedon came in and like basically edited his movie and Zack Snyder's like been real salty about it and so now he's releasing
Starting point is 00:12:54 a four-hour cut of the movie that he shot that is like supposedly totally different tonally from what Joss Whedon released uh I didn't know all like all of that texture. Um, but they just released the poster for it and it is the most Zack Snyder ass movie poster you've ever seen. It's just like gray and black concrete of broken. Um, remember my other movies that were super saturated visually I'm back
Starting point is 00:13:27 WandaVision episode is trending because they just dropped the fourth one of that super producer Ana Hosni was explaining this show to us that it's probably taking place in one of the characters minds and that's why it's like a sitcom
Starting point is 00:13:44 and it takes place after the events probably taking place in one of the characters minds. And that's why it's like a sitcom. Um, and it takes place after the events of end game. And neither of us have seen end game. So I've seen half of it. Uh, I'm slowly working. Yeah. Was a throwback to that Jamie Foxx character from a living color.
Starting point is 00:13:59 Oh man. Wanda. I'll rock your world. Rock your world. Uh, silhouette challenge. Have you done it yet? Are you? No. What is that? Is that Tik TOK? Wanda. I'll rock your world. Rock your world. Silhouette Challenge. Have you done it yet? No. What is that? Is that TikTok?
Starting point is 00:14:10 It's a TikTok thing. I mean, after the ghost one, I haven't been doing too hot on the challenges. What was the ghost one? There was this other one that people were doing where it would look like a ghost jumped out of your body in the middle of a dance
Starting point is 00:14:26 number. And people were doing it to like this Michael Jackson remix. Yeah. It's just enough. Like I'm, I'm finally understanding like when like older relatives would be like, ah, that just exhausts me to look at.
Starting point is 00:14:39 Yeah. I'm like, what are you talking about? Full eight makes you tired. And now I'm there. Like I'm, I'm entering is, this is tiring me to look at age and sometimes i'm like yo the because i also you know we're out here in la you see people
Starting point is 00:14:52 in the wild shooting tiktok videos yeah and influencers in the wild is one of the great instagram accounts the energy that goes into that again this is making me tired to watch um but you know that's the art right now the kids do and then cicely tyson is trending uh r.i.p uh to icon yeah icon i mean she was like the face of harriet tubman jane pitman fucking miles davis's muse she like had the highest ever rate at that time highest ever rated snl episode when she came on to host she was the first black woman to host snl and at the time the highest ever ratings uh came along with that and she's just like yeah she was like opened the door for for so many people but yeah it's um another iconic loss yeah and her book i think just came out too like she had just done promotion for her new book yeah um and yeah and then people say it's
Starting point is 00:15:52 incredible so i mean her life is unbelievable yeah because even in the parts yeah i've just like for me my obviously knowing who she is but like i was really interested in miles davis because that's my namesake and reading about him. And when they were together, I'm like, Oh my God, this woman's whole energy is like a whole other thing. I'm like,
Starting point is 00:16:11 why am I reading about this? Why am I reading about him? Yeah. Like Miles who? Give me some. He just had a brief brush with her genius and that's where all, all the music came from. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:16:21 It's, uh, but I mean, it's, I mean, you can just see from the the like sort of eulogies or how she's being eulogized by people in the entertainment it's like there's not a single person who has interacted with her and isn't like beside themselves right now being like
Starting point is 00:16:36 i can't even believe i was in the presence of like this like life forms yeah all right uh we'll end there on a somber note but um it's that kind of a it's that kind of a world that kind of a era that's gonna do it for this week we are back on monday with a whole ass episode of the show until then be kind to each other be kind to yourselves wear a mask wash your hands stay inside don't do nothing about white supremacy, and we'll talk to you all Monday. Bye. Bye. do. What was that? That was live audio of a woman's nightmare. Can Kay trust her sister, or is history repeating itself? There's nothing dangerous about what you're doing.
