Listen to Crooks Everywhere starting September 25th on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. or wherever you get your podcasts. Miles. These are some things that are trending. These are the trends.
Starting point is 00:02:27 Trend it up. Trend it up. Yeah. RIP to Jessica Walter. Lucille Bluth. Legend. Lucille Bluth. My God. I didn't know she was 80 years old. I also didn't know that she was the voice of the mother
Starting point is 00:02:42 on the dinosaur show. That Jim Henson dinosaur show that Daniel's father wrote on. Yeah. Yeah. Uncle Andy. Shout out to Uncle Andy. Man, that's just fucked up. I fucking love Arrested Development.
Starting point is 00:02:56 Yeah, me too. And there was something about her mastery of the just shitty, wealthy white woman that I don't know anyone will be able to capture in the same way. Her performance is still as funny today as it was then. Gifts of her winking are still enough for me. Don't ever do that again.
Starting point is 00:03:20 My favorite line when they go to Klimpy's, she orders, I'll have the Ike and tina tuna and the server says okay it played her platter i don't understand the question and i won't respond to it i yeah i didn't realize that was a because she said that a couple times i think yeah yeah shout out to a queen nba trade deadline shit is happening. Or not happening, depending on who your team is. Right.
Starting point is 00:03:48 So Lakers, not so much. Did the Lakers do anything? I mean, it looks like Andre Drummond is the buyout with Andre Drummond. And then they'll sign him. Is the closest thing that we're going to have to action right now. Did they buy him out? Did Cleveland buy him out? It says the latest thing was they are working on have to action right now. Did they buy him out? Did Cleveland buy him out? The latest thing was they are working
Starting point is 00:04:08 on a buyout. That could be it. Kyle Lowry. Mike Lowry staying in Toronto. I know a lot of people thought he was somewhere bound. Miami bound. LA bound. That didn't happen. He's staying in
Starting point is 00:04:23 666. The Heat got a lot better. got victor oladipo without giving away you know with arrow or anything duncan robinson cool um yeah i think you know we'll see what happens and then rajan rondo went from the hawks to the clippers lou went to theippers. Everyone's making Magic City jokes already again because he'll be in Atlanta. He went to the Hawks. Lou went from Clippers to Hawks. Yeah, to Atlanta where he famously
Starting point is 00:04:54 left the bubble to go to get some wings. I hadn't realized that he's one of those dudes who's super fun to watch, but the stats nerds are like he's actually like not not I think because he's bad on D
Starting point is 00:05:08 kind of a smaller dude but I know Rondo people love him so yeah that'll be interesting for the Clippers might feel a little bit like the little brother trying to be like the big brother with the Clippers Lakers how do you feel about them getting rondo i don't care i mean it was the same thing i compartmentalized when he
Starting point is 00:05:30 came to the lakers after playing for the celtics who we absolutely had a fucking grudge with yeah i was just like whatever if you're here to fucking do a job by all means i'm not gonna buy the jersey do your gig you did it thank you salute there's our ring goodbye wow yeah you know that's how shit works you know in the factory like that when you're just cranking out the titles championship factory but yeah uh the thing was with kyle lowry he almost came but it sounded like they were asking for talon horton tucker in the trade and that's when they were like nope palinka said nope to that so there was they were close but they asked for tht and that was gonna happen that's gotta be a real weird feeling because kyle lowry was uh
Starting point is 00:06:11 has been answering questions about like what it feels like to for your time in toronto to be coming to an end and then they just like couldn't get it done it's not that they were like no we love kyle we're committed to him long term they're like ah fuck we uh we just couldn't get it done. It's not that they were like, no, we love Kyle. We're committed to him long term. They were like, ah, fuck. We just didn't. The emails kind of missed each other back and forth. So you're here for another year. We read that wrong, Kyle.
Starting point is 00:06:36 We read that a little bit wrong there. We're getting Schroeder and KCP and Talon Horton talking about what we're doing. USMNT is trending us mutant ninja turtles yep there it is hey uh he's in a half shell turtle power they the u.s men's national team the soccer team is trending because you know look there was a fucking wacky road to not being in the last world cup um and now the opening up uh against jamaica we have the thing the reason why it's trending is that the u.s is now really diversifying in terms of the people the talent we're going after because there's new eligibility rules that's basically saying like if you were born here you lived here as a kid lived here for more than five years if you're an adult
Starting point is 00:07:28 your parent or grandparent is from here you can play for any country and like based on those new sort of guys were those all like either or or was that and it used to be if you um had a parent or grandparent um who was of a certain nationality that made you eligible or you had to live there for a certain amount of time like as an adult but then they expanded it fucking to all kinds you're like hey man did you live in the u.s for a little bit oh yeah yeah come come play for us because it's gonna be too hard to play for england and that's kind of like what's happening is because there's so much talent in other countries that it's allowing for a lot of people who have you know uh like for example serginio dest he's a dutch player but his father is an american his mother's dutch he plays for fucking barcelona okay he plays with lionel messi this this young man now plays
Starting point is 00:08:21 for the united states men's national hey all right we're starting to really get some like ballers, you know? So the US 1-4-1 and Serginio Dest had an incredible goal from outside the box, or maybe slightly inside the box, a little far poster. Is that a thing that you can pay for, or Is that against the rules to bring him in? How does that work from a national team perspective? How do you recruit? Oh, so you'll have camps. You'll have a camp, right?
Starting point is 00:08:55 And saying you're invited to be in the U.S. men's national team camp because of your eligibility. And then when you go there, it's like a full court press to be like, hey, check out these other players. You like this? This is how your life could be, man. So the thing that happened was jonathan gonzalez was a california-born uh mexican kid but he was playing for the u.s and he switched to mexico like a few
Starting point is 00:09:14 years ago and it was devastating for u.s soccer because they're like fuck like you don't have that many good players yeah exactly but now that things changing, we're just courting so many more players. And yeah, I think it's looking nice. There's even a player for Arsenal, Fuller and Balogun, who's eligible to play for the US too. But in terms, they recruit you based on how good the team's going to be.
Starting point is 00:09:40 It's not like they're paying money, right? I mean, there's a stipend to play for the country because really, if you're a professional player, you're paying your bills by playing for a club somewhere in Europe or wherever, in the US, MLS, Liga, MX, or whatever. But yeah, for this, it's purely like, hey, you're going to have a shot here.
Starting point is 00:09:58 We'll build a team. You factor into the plans. It's harder if you have English eligibility and they've never called you up since you were 17 that says you're not on the radar so if the us is like hey we like you come on over and jamaica has been doing the same thing too because there's a lot of players of jamaican descent in the uk that they're like y'all i know it's tough trying to get on the three lions try and come over here for the jamaicans and we'll do it huh interesting yeah i i'm just like so tainted by ncaa basketball where it's just like the the way they deal with
Starting point is 00:10:33 recruiting amateur athletes is you know paying them under the table but yeah i mean look they'll they'll do deal sweeteners it's just harder for national teams like with messi and barcelona they they clocked him at like 10 years old in argentina and they're like you're coming here and what oh you're broke okay your parents now have jobs and a home right what else can we do to get this over and the national team is a little bit different because i don't think they don't have the same sort of revenues to throw around to bait people in yeah aside from playing time that's really all it is like that's really how we have an advantage like it's a we have a good infrastructure and you get playing time do people like to will a player stock shoot up if they play really good in like the world cup versus oh absolutely yeah that's a shop window to then you know sign huge like at the
Starting point is 00:11:24 at the end of every world cup there's always like a player who ends up making a huge move in europe somewhere right because based on their performance like how how good is the quality of soccer during world cup versus like the premier league and it's like i mean it is like march madness because there's an element of like you're going out of body and you're tying that to like your own sense of patriotism nationalism whatever and yeah you'll see some wild games um but you also see it in the club see it's you know it's it's hard to say because yeah everybody's pretty turned on but i think right the energy is always different when it's an international tournament right right cool man um hey man that's pretty cool hey man i'm also uh figure i might as well
Starting point is 00:12:07 now that i'm uh watching that f1 drive to succeed uh as recommended by i don't think i even got that name right but drive to survive drive to survive the voice of god came over the uh drive to survive as super producer anna h Hosnia just corrected me. She's been recommending that show for a while. I just watched the first episode and it's pretty interesting stuff, man. Follow Anna's F1
Starting point is 00:12:36 freak account. All the F1 stuff. All the F1 goods. And finally, Tornado Birmingham is trending. Yeah. Tornado in birmingham i guess just kind of there's like some pretty significant damage uh in birmingham yeah just that seems to be another you know earth just doing its thing yeah uh but yeah i mean it's pretty like there are some like some of the pictures just like look like they're just trees wrecking shit, flattened houses.
Starting point is 00:13:06 It's very scary. So please stay safe if you're in the area. Tornadoes are a very unique type of terror. Because it really is just like the finger of God just being like, and your house is gone, and your house is gone, and your neighbors won't be like i just remember reading a book called night of the twisters when i was in like elementary school and being like so fascinated and like terrified of uh of tornadoes because you know living in ohio and those types of i mean i
Starting point is 00:13:40 always mentioned the first time i heard one of those sirens I was fucked up cause the only thing I knew about was fucking tornadoes with twister so that'll show you how healthy my relationship was with my perception of a tornado um but it's like kinda like earthquakes too like we don't know when they're coming right I think there's something wilder
Starting point is 00:13:59 though about knowing like like you hear they're like oh fuck and it's so dramatic looking, too. It's like it doesn't look like it should exist outside of like a sci-fi movie. There's just like this funnel that's drinking up trees and shit. It's like, damn. Anyways. Please stay safe, everybody.
Starting point is 00:14:18 Yeah, please stay safe out there. We are back tomorrow with the whole last episode of the show. Until then, be kind to each other and be kind to yourself. Wear a mask and don't do nothing about white supremacy. We'll talk to you all tomorrow. Bye. Bye. I'm Dr. Laurie Santos, host of the Happiness Lab podcast.
