Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an iHeart Podcast. I'm Bob Crawford, host of American History Hotline, a different type of podcast. You, the listener, ask the questions. Did George Washington really cut down a cherry tree? Were JFK and Marilyn Monroe having an affair? And I find the answers. I'm so glad you asked me this question. This is such a ridiculous story. You can listen to American History Hotline on the iHeartRadio app, Apple podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Just like great shoes, great books take you places. Through unforgettable love stories and into conversations with characters you'll never
Starting point is 00:00:42 forget. I think any good romance, it gives me this feeling of like butterflies. I'm Danielle Robay and this is Bookmarked by Reese's Book Club, the new podcast from Hello Sunshine and iHeart Podcasts, where we dive into the stories that shape us on the page and off. Starting point is 00:01:34 You're gonna make me cry. Listen to you versus you on the iHeart Radio app, Apple podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. This week on Dear Chelsea with me, Chelsea Handler, Sophia Bush is here. Tell me how that feels to be a hot, considered a hot lesbian. Quite an honor. You know what's funny? When you're actually more fluid with your sexuality,
Starting point is 00:01:58 the swing goes from nobody gives a shit who you're sleeping with to you better identify exactly who you are so we can figure out what name to call you. And it's like, has nobody been paying attention to like all the hot girls I've been kissing on camera? Hi, I've always been here. Listen to Dear Chelsea on the iHeartRadio app, Apple podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:02:22 Hello, the internet and welcome to this episode of all right, we got two options here we got. Oh, you thought this was a rabbit. They thought this was a rabbit. It's Winnie the trending poo. Fuck Fourth of July. Exactly. That's one option. Or you could do you could do we will not go quietly into the night.
Starting point is 00:02:43 We will not vanish without a fight. I forgot that those two it opens with a rhyming couplet that kind of sucks Those are called we're going to live on we're going to survive today. We celebrate our indetrendance day Fuck yeah Because that's how we're all feeling right now. Oh hell yeah, dude. Hell yeah I'm so thankful for the slaver our fathers to you know Do that the thing and fireworks and hot dog and firework and hot dog? Yeah, my name is Jack Oh Brian that over there is mr. Miles Gray! I'm hot dog.
Starting point is 00:03:25 I love hot dog. Guys, spiral cut your hot dogs. Just a tip. It is fun. It is fun. You get a sharp knife. Have you ever spiral cut your cucumber? How you say cucumber?
Starting point is 00:03:37 No, how you say cucumber in English? It's pretty fun. Wait, what do you, but I mean, you're not grilling a cucumber, you're just spiral cutting it. No, no, you just spiral cut it, and then it kind of slinkies out. Yeah. Cute. But the hot dog. The kids love it. Go this what you do.
Starting point is 00:03:50 You render a pound of bacon fat down and then you just deep fry these spiral cut hot dogs in this crease. And they're going to get a fucking crispy edge. There's so much surface area that you will that you will perish probably from all that bullshit. We're all, that's what our goal should be this 4th of July. We will not actually, Miles, go quietly into that night. No, we won't. We will not vanish
Starting point is 00:04:17 without a fight. No. I said a hip hop, a hip hop. A hip hop, a hip hop, but you don't stop. Now my name's Bill Pullman or Paxton. Nobody can tell the difference. I can. He's Pullman, right? Yeah, he's Pullman.
Starting point is 00:04:36 Paxton's the one that passed away. Paxton is, I got a little dick, he's pathetic. They're a legend. They're a real legend. You know what I mean? You're gonna shoot me. All right. A lot of bad mean? You're gonna shoot me. All right, a lot of bad shit happening on this July 3rd. First of all, I think they did pass the-
Starting point is 00:04:52 It passed, it passed. FKA, big beautiful bill. Yep, FKA twigs is out here giving $170 billion to ICE enforcement. Countless others, millions will be kicked off of their Medicaid. Snap benefits are also going to be just, yeah, a lot of bad stuff, but hey, at least they extended the Trump tax cuts.
Starting point is 00:05:14 Yeah. Only two people ended up having their shit together. Talk a big game, but as always, they don't really give a fuck about like any of this shit they claim to give a fuck about like the Balancing the budget has always been despite the fact that it's covered as like the only real like true story the only real policy shit by like the mainstream media the Balancing the budget is always complete horse shit and every time anybody gets into office They're just going to spend as much money as they can and if they're Republican, they're going to spend it on enforcing white supremacy. Yeah, the deficit is just something they say when a Democrat is in
Starting point is 00:05:54 power and then they'll maybe say it like this, but it's just like, you know, they're just racists in the end. They're just racists. You know, because trust me, no one was pushing back on like the turbo charging ice and immigration raids. No. It's just like the broader than like, well, what about the deficit? And Lisa Murkowski, my God, you almost you could have done it. You could have done it when it was getting out of the Senate, but you decided to be like,
Starting point is 00:06:20 I had to do what's right for Alaska. So fuck the rest of them. So yep, yep, yep. That's great news, I guess. The other part of that, another thing that's trending around the passage of the big, beautiful bullshit bill is, you know, with the Republicans and Trump, every accusation is a confession. Obviously, Trump has been screaming about how Biden didn't know what, what his administration was up to, who's actually signing this legislation. It was all auto pen. It's all auto pen that he wasn't, he didn't even know what
Starting point is 00:06:53 legislation was happening. Well, every day, I think it's become clear that Trump is not really in control of this administration. Um, like obviously he's the president, but you know, like it's like Russell Vought, the architect of project 2025. He's clearly the one who's in charge of, you know, the governmental dismantling operation. And then Stephen Miller gets to be baby gurbals and act out his like ethnic cleansing, secret police fantasy via quote immigration policy. But now we talked yesterday about Trump can barely answer a straightforward question, even if it's reiterated numerous times.
Starting point is 00:07:26 But now we're hearing, so right before this past, we heard about Republican holdouts and Trump summoned them to the White House. But then there was a bit of a, holy shit, this guy is really senile moment. This is a quote, this is reporting from the outlet, not us or notice, notus.org. Quote, according to three sources with direct knowledge of the comments, the president told Republicans at this meeting that there are three things Congress shouldn't touch if they wanna win elections,
Starting point is 00:07:51 Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security. Trump said that. Yes. And then- In giving a speech to them, talking to them about- Why they need to vote for the big, beautiful bill. That is cutting this Medicaid. Exactly. Then, then one congressman said to Trump quote, but we're touching Medicaid in this bill. Uh,
Starting point is 00:08:12 and then Trump seemed to be confused as to what that was all about. And the one yesterday, just to refresh people's memory was somebody said, so like it was at, uh, when he was doing the opening for his concentration camp in Florida and they said, how long do you expect prisoners to be held here? And he said, what was that? How you say it? What were you saying?
Starting point is 00:08:33 How long do you expect the detainees here to be held? Months, days, weeks? I love it here in Florida. I expect to be here. You know, I like it here. I like Mar-a-Lago. Back in Washington, DC, I like it here. Uh, I like Mar-a-Lago, uh, back in, back in Washington, DC, I do my best. Uh, I live in a diamond. Um, so
Starting point is 00:08:52 the office is like a diamond now, but it was really, it was really not well maintained. So yeah, I mean, that's that literally is what happened. Yeah. He either doesn't know or has totally forgotten that his tax cuts for the oligarchs bill is coming at the expense of people's benefits. But this feels just like another case
Starting point is 00:09:12 of people telling him what he wants to hear and then just doing whatever the fuck they want because he can't really keep a thought straight for too long. Like the alligator Alcatraz thing, obviously a big part of that was giving just a huge distraction to the media so Trump cancatraz thing, obviously a big part of that was giving just a huge distraction to the media so Trump can do his thing, but also in line with what his policies are.
Starting point is 00:09:30 But this took a lot of attention. Like, alligator Alcatraz, but when you look at how slap dash the thing was put together, like it couldn't even handle normal Florida weather. It feels like this thing was like, okay, he wants that, let's build it, let's just get it done.
Starting point is 00:09:45 We can move on and we'll send some people there and we can just go to his next weird fantasy. And he's treated like an easily distractible child. Right. Basically. Yeah. Yeah. And anyone who has had family or friends that have gone through like cognitive decline,
Starting point is 00:10:01 like dementia or something like this, you know that this is not going to reverse and suddenly he gets better. It's only going to progress. So at that point, like on the lighter end of the spectrum, is it like when the when he sees polling again, when this bill is passed, he's like, what the hell is this? Why are they so mad at me? What happened to Medicaid? And he's going, what the hell is this? Why are they so mad at me? What happened to Medicaid? And he's gonna lash out at his staff
Starting point is 00:10:26 or is it gonna be something like he orders a, like SEAL Team Six to raid a McDonald's that he thinks his dad's ghost is residing in or something. And he's like, he's gonna get it back now. Why not both? Poor Kana-Lostos, Miles. Yeah, I don't know. Just wanted to point out that this is very,
Starting point is 00:10:42 don't tell mom the babysitter's dead White House edition where it's like this. Well, the fucking Democrats had that lab before they had a whole administration with a guy who was like asleep at the wheel and they used it to do fucking nothing, right? They were like, well, what does he want? Because they don't have convictions to fucking like do, you know, like it was just like, yeah, we're, they, they could have taken the opportunity when Joe Biden was suffering from dementia and
Starting point is 00:11:11 didn't know what the fuck was going on to actually pass legislation that would fuck him in the long run, but would like actually help people. These people don't have the sort of insatiable desire to create more equality in the country. They say that. No. But it's when you look at the people on the right and their pursuit of like a white ethno state. Yes.
Starting point is 00:11:36 They're not fucking around, especially with Laura Loomer's making claims like, oh, there's going to be 65 million meals for the alligators. Quick Google search, Latino population, United States, 65 million. You're like, okay, uh-huh, mm-hmm. Jesus. That's what I'm like, it's not immigrants at all. It's the idea that white people are, like this should just be a white place.
Starting point is 00:11:56 Yeah, that's what they're doing. They'll figure out new ways to categorize people on how they need to be non-citizens. And I think that's why it's more important than ever to be fucking really talking about this and pushing back at every opportunity you have. Yeah, Democracy Now just reported the story of an American citizen.
Starting point is 00:12:14 I mean, this just keeps happening. American citizens being grabbed by men in masks, no outward uniforms. And then when people contact the Department of Homeland Security to be like, okay, where are they? They're like, this story is a hoax, but we don't have a record of that person in the system. So it's like, oh, so they were actually kidnapped. And then it's like, oh, no, it's just like we're accidentally arresting people because they just happen to be brown and in the place where we're doing a raid, AKA like where they're going to work. Right.
Starting point is 00:12:48 But I don't know if it's a person going to work who's not white. Yeah. How do we know, you know? Sorry. The wrong place at the wrong time is fucking everywhere right now for anybody who has brown skin. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:13:04 But that's why we gotta wear our masks, man, because people are hitting us and stuff. It's really unsafe out here being an ICE agent as they fucking cry about the, the assaults on ICE officers is increasing. I do like, I really think they're going to try and fucking arrest Zora and Mom Donnie. Like Trump is saying- I wouldn't be surprised. Yeah, like he's like, we can't have communists in this country.
Starting point is 00:13:29 I'll protect New York. And also was saying like, then we'll have to arrest him. Look, we don't need a communist in this country, but if we have one, I'm gonna be watching over him. A lot of people are saying he's here illegally. We're gonna look at everything. So like straight up, he's just going to arrest him.
Starting point is 00:13:45 Like I don't like I know that's illegal, but that certainly is not stopping them anywhere else. I think. Yeah. I don't know when that would, I feel like he would have to get into office or a bee on the precipice of that. Yeah. Versus right now.
Starting point is 00:14:01 But I, but yeah, I don't think it'll be anytime soon, but I do think that's eventually where it's going. That's definitely a, yeah. And the narrative arc of where this goes, I feel like on some level. Yeah. Cause there's also Christie no to do the most provocative thing. Like they're doing the most out in the open provocative thing because I think they want to start like the thing in, in LA where like there was, you know, people pushing back that that's what they, they want to start a civil war because then they can declare martial law and suspend democracy, which seems to be the plan. Like I think they're going to do like whatever the worst, most offensively like anti-democratic
Starting point is 00:14:43 thing that you could possibly imagine. I think they're gonna do that because they want to be able to call it, claim that they need to institute martial law. Yeah, I mean, Christine Noem also said something pretty chilling about how she's like, oh, there are powers that the Department of Homeland Security has that we've barely explored yet
Starting point is 00:15:05 And maybe we need to start thinking about how we can use these powers more creatively and you're like Jesus Christ Yeah, anyway, so Fuck fourth of July fuck fourth of July. Let's take a quick break. We'll be right back American history is full of wise people. Well women said something like no 99.99% of war is diarrhea and 1% is glory. Those founding fathers were gossipy AF and they love to cut each other down. I'm Bob Crawford, host of American History Hotline, the show where you send us your questions about American history and I find the answers, including the nuggets of
Starting point is 00:15:51 wisdom our history has to offer. Hamilton pauses and then he says, the greatest man that ever lived was Julius Caesar. And Jefferson writes in his diary, this proves that Hamilton is for a dictator based on corruption. My favorite line was what Neil Armstrong said, it would have been harder to fake it than to do it. Listen to American history hotline on the iHeartRadio app, Apple podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:16:24 Don't miss the You vs. You podcast. They go deep, covering childhood trauma, family, overcoming loss, and the moments that shaped their journey. These honest conversations are meant to take the cape off our loss, and the moments that shape their journey. Starting point is 00:16:50 inspires you to become a better you, and therefore set you free to live the life of your dreams. Here's a sneak peek. I'm trained to go compete. I'm trained to be like harder, but sometimes that mentality stops you from stopping and smelling the flowers in your own garden.
Starting point is 00:17:06 Is it wrong to want more? We migrated, our family migrated here. I'm like second generation. Listen to You Versus You as part of My Kultura podcast network. Available on the iHeart radio app, Apple podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Just like great shoes, great books take you places, through unforgettable love stories, and into conversations with characters you'll never forget. Starting point is 00:17:37 I'm Danielle Robay, and this is Bookmarked by Reese's Book Club, the new podcast from Hello Sunshine and iHeart Podcasts. Every week I sit down with your favorite book lovers, authors, celebrities, book talkers, and more to explore the stories that shape us, on the page and off. I've been reading every Reese's Book Club pick, deep-diving book talk theories, and obsessing over book-to-screen casts for years. And now I get to talk to the people making the magic. So if you've ever fallen in love with
Starting point is 00:18:05 a fictional character or cried at the last chapter or passed a book to a friend saying, you have to read this, this podcast is for you. Listen to Bookmarked by Reese's Book Club on the iHeartRadio app, Apple podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. This week on Dear Chelsea with me, Chelsea Handler. Sophia Bush is here. Tell me how that feels to be considered a hot lesbian. Quite an honor. You know what's funny is you do this weird math.
Starting point is 00:18:36 If you're a woman dating men, nobody wants to talk to you about your sexuality. They just want to either say you're a prude or a slut. If you date too much, they criticize you. If you don't date, you must be frigid, whatever. And then the thing that gets added when you're actually more fluid with your sexuality is the swing goes to you better identify exactly who you are so we can figure out what name to call you. And it's like, okay.
Starting point is 00:19:02 And you know, I sort of looked around and was like, has nobody been paying attention to like all the hot girls I sort of looked around and was like, has nobody been paying attention to all the hot girls I've been kissing on camera? Maybe not in front of you off camera, but hi, I've always been here. Listen to Dear Chelsea on the iHeartRadio app, Apple podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. And we're back. And RIP to Michael Madsen. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:19:30 The actor from Reservoir Dogs, Mr. Blonde in Reservoir Dogs, who's just found in his home, passed away of what they appear to be natural causes in Malibu. He seemed to be struggling, man. Yeah, he seemed like he was struggling for a while. It was very, very difficult. And then also the footballer, Diogo Jota, who plays for Liverpool and the Portuguese national team along with his brother, they passed away in a car accident.
Starting point is 00:19:58 Oh, Jesus. And it's like, you know, like when an athlete dies and you're really into a sport, and even if they're not on your team, it's just like, you know, because you see them play, you have this sort of not a parasocial relationship necessarily, but some connection to it. This guy was 28. He just got married a few weeks ago. He just won a Nations League trophy with Portugal. He just won the Premier League with Liverpool, like for all intents and purposes, was having like one of the greatest years of his life
Starting point is 00:20:27 and then dies tragically in a car accident. Just really fucking awful, awful shit. And life is- Horrible, man. We are all hanging by a thread. And yeah, just, I don't know. I'm very upset by it. It's just really fucked up, man.
Starting point is 00:20:44 Especially when you think too, like when you think of professional, it's like, oh man, this guy's like, this guy's doing it all. And you're like, this guy's fucking young, he's 12 years younger than me. You know, and the life that was ahead of him, leaving three children behind.
Starting point is 00:20:57 It's horrible, man. It's so, so devastating. So I just wanted to just to bring that up because it's a really, really sad, sad story. Yeah. All right,, sad story. Yeah. All right. Another sad story, American contractors, US contractors guarding aid distribution sites in Gaza
Starting point is 00:21:12 are basically committing war crimes using live ammunition and stun grenades on hungry Palestinians, like trying to get food. This whole joint venture of the aid stations being ran by the US and Israeli like companies forces, it's just it's ended with they're just killing innocent people. Yeah. And now it's wild, too, because like this story came out because one of the guys who works for this company spoke to the AP to be like, people are fucking like doing whatever they want.
Starting point is 00:21:47 Like it just feels like they're just have people that are unqualified, as they said, unqualified, unvetted, heavily armed and seem to have an open license to do whatever they wished. Pete Slauson Jesus Christ. Chris Bounds Which is really horrifying as if like the optics weren't even like more against what is happening there. I mean, just objectively, because what is happening there is an ethnic, just a case of genocide. But it seems like, you know,
Starting point is 00:22:13 also with like Zoran's win, the going hard on people that stand up for Palestinians, it's not quite hitting the same way it was maybe 18 months ago. Yeah. Yeah. It feels like there I there there was this segment on CNN that they're like new stats guy Harry Enton, who used to be on 538 podcast, was talking about the shift in support. Basically, in 2017, they polled Democrats,
Starting point is 00:22:47 who are you more sympathetic to, Israelis or Palestinians? And Democrats at that time, 2017, so this is like into the Trump administration, sympathized with Israelis by a 13 point margin. They asked that same question this year and Democrats sympathize with Palestinians by 43 points. Jesus. A 56 point shift. And then if you ask people, Democrats who are, you know, under the, I think the demographic was like 18 to 49. So like people who are not old.
Starting point is 00:23:25 Right. Right. Right. And that shift was used to be Israelis by 14 points and now as Palestinians by 57 points. That's a 70 point shift. Yeah. Yeah. Because, yeah, because people have like, that's the thing is like a lot of the media narrative has been like, well, but this is not what Americans believe or this is unpopular or this is. And it's just like, no, everybody has, everybody's able to see what the fuck is happening here. It's not, it's just entrenched moneyed interests that are trying to stop people from saying what they're seeing, you know? Yeah. Yeah. I think they're just also looking at that Mamdani race.
Starting point is 00:24:09 Like there was a ton of money being spent against him, right? And it did not like he still do shit Cuomo the fuck out and even down ballot. There were other races where APAC and other like pro Israeli groups were trying to to get people who deign to say, stop the fucking violence in Gaza out of office. And they failed there too. Their usual attacks are just not ringing the same way. And I think it's the same way how when you look at a lot of Democrats who are running, who are on this old way of doing things,
Starting point is 00:24:41 those messages were just in a new era. And I think everyone's kind of realizing, like, what the fuck you supposed to say now? Like, I used to be able to be like, we're going to stop crime. And people like, what the fuck you talking about, man? Like my I can't afford to live. Talk about that. Like, I don't give a shit about this other stuff. I'm about to start doing crime because I can't afford shit. Yeah. And this is it's it's definitely we're seeing a weakening.
Starting point is 00:25:03 But there is a piece in Jacobin talking about how like, well, there's definitely this obviously projected strength that comes from groups like APAC. When you look at their record, it's not that they win every time they put money in. And I think along with like the sort of public sentiment around Gaza, it just shows that things are just not quite what they used
Starting point is 00:25:25 to be in terms of just like lobbying attacks at people and thinking that that's just going to do it and be like, this guy's Muslim. Sure. Maybe if this was 2005, someone would be like, oh, but now you're like, this guy's Muslim. You're like, oh yeah. Like Rami Youssef, I like that guy. Oh, like other people I know, what's the problem? It's not just, it's not, not for,
Starting point is 00:25:46 I mean, there are plenty of people who are like, oh, what? Yeah. But that's not the- I mean, I think it's recently is like 2017. Like that's, those numbers are from 2017. Like that's, you know, I think things have shifted like very drastically,
Starting point is 00:25:59 very quickly. Yeah, yeah. But it's not, I mean, they're not going down without a fight. The University of California System is making a law saying that student governments are banned from boycotting Israel So you can't boycott. Yeah, uh-huh. Oh, wow. We're gonna make you spend money On why can't I do this? Oh because we were we were paid to put this in our bylaws. Pressure straight doing it.
Starting point is 00:26:28 No, that's that's really a good way to win people over. Because it's objectively the right thing to do is tell fucking student affinity groups that they can't. Cool. Yeah, so they'll keep pushing. But I like the tide has completely shifted. They're not stopping this as long as there's just continued slaughter of innocent people over there. And I don't, I don't see it changing. And I feel like the Zoran race is going to wake a lot of people up,
Starting point is 00:26:57 but it's going to have to be happening against the push of like the democratic establishment. You know, they're not gonna be learning this lesson anytime soon. Although Kirsten Gillibrand did apologize. Oh damn. Yeah, yeah, she was like. Wow, big news. Yeah, big news.
Starting point is 00:27:14 New York Senator says sorry for the global jihad. That's how they were. That's how like the, you know, the New York Times and like center media, center in quotes, media works is like they, uh, issue a correction and regret the error. But like, that's obviously, they're doing that after all of the damage is done. Yeah. Um, and I think even like the governor Hokel,
Starting point is 00:27:39 like even somehow found herself on the right side. She's like, Oh, you shouldn't, she shouldn't be doing that. That's, that's not good smearing somebody. She's like, oh, she shouldn't be doing that. That's not good, smearing somebody. But yeah, apparently she spoke on the phone on Wednesday and said, congratulations, and I'm sorry. Quote, maybe we can set a path to move forward productively. Okay. Then they're acting like they're fucking,
Starting point is 00:28:01 like they're working with a far right group and not like the person who should be showing them the path forward for the, like maybe we can like, that's the same statement that they issue when like Donald Trump wins. Yeah. No, seriously. Maybe we can like work together productively. I'm sorry. Is he one of your ops? I mean, if we're keeping it a hundred, yeah, he is, he is one of your ops? Yeah, I mean I get if we're keeping it Yeah, he is he is one of our ops because we're here to protect the status quo But maybe there is a way that we can
Starting point is 00:28:38 Find a way to but it's gonna have to be all you know People driven it came it's not gonna be any of these institutions. They're all gonna be fighting it like it's a fucking cancer, you know, yeah. Yep. Yep. Yep Hey Huh? Happy 4th of July. Hey fuck 4th of July 4th of July what what a great clip that was even more on point than I even realized at the time It's just when they say it's Winnie the fucking poo fuck the fourth again.
