Can Kay trust her sister, or is history repeating itself? There's nothing dangerous about what you're doing. They're just dreams. Starting point is 00:00:55 Listen to Dream Sequence on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. How do you feel about biscuits? Hi, I'm Akilah Hughes, and I'm so excited about my new podcast, Rebel Spirit, where I head back to my hometown in Kentucky and try to convince my high school to change their racist mascot, the Rebels, into something everyone in the South loves, the biscuits. I was a lady rebel. Like, what does that even mean? It's right here in black and white and prints. It's bigger than a flag or mascot. Listen to Rebel Spirit on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hello, the internet, and welcome to this episode of Jace Trent Voorhees.
Starting point is 00:01:34 Why? Because it's Friday the 13th! Anyways, I was obsessed with Friday the 13th movies when i was like seven years old i was real into that shit if youtube existed at the time man i would have done nothing but watch kill compilations truly they're like something's wrong with that boy yeah i was i was a morbid seven-year-old anyways morbid Anyway. It's morbid time. I'm Jack. That's Miles. These are some of the things that are trending.
Starting point is 00:02:07 Let's talk about Friday the 13th. Yeah. Why do we think it's unlucky, Miles? No fucking clue. I thought it was because of the movie. Yeah. I guess that's my first conception of it as a child. I was like, oh, that's Friday the 13th.
Starting point is 00:02:20 I didn't know it was a bigger thing. Yeah, so it was J.M. McNabb, our writer extraordinaire, came through with a deep dive into why Friday the 13th is unlucky, especially if you're a horny Crystal Lake camp counselor. Oh, yeah, yeah. So I don't know. People really want to put it on Christianity. They really want to have some Christian reason for it or like some Norse mythology reason.
Starting point is 00:02:46 Wait, what do you mean? Like that there's an attack against Christianity or you're saying Christians are being thirsty? I'm tired of people being mean to Christianity. No, no. Like people want a Christian explanation or a like mythology explanation for it. But the ones that are out there are pretty unconvincing. for it but the ones that are out there are pretty unconvincing so he found that like what the most widely accepted answer for like christians is that there were 13 guests that attended the last supper okay you know also as he pointed out ominous sign that they called it the last supper uh yeah maybe
Starting point is 00:03:22 that was the thing not the 13th guest yeah maybe just don't go to dinners called the last supper uh yeah maybe that was the thing not the 13th guest yeah maybe just don't go to dinners called the last supper but there's also in norse mythology there was like a story where loki crashed a party and brought the number of gods in attendance to 13 at which point one of them shot the other because of loki tricks but again it's just like i don't know here's the thing though if you think about it right the reason there's 13 guests at the last supper is because of jesus is that right because he had 12 he had his apostles they were trying to take that down to uh even 12 that's what judas was trying so number 13 is jesus i would say yeah that's how i'm looking at it i'm like well they
Starting point is 00:04:02 were just doing their thing as 12 people and then you came and made it 13 and also that's like the entire like his whole entourage when he was rolling around as an adult was like as a celebrity was 12 people so he was always like part of a group of 13 so you're gonna say the whole entirety of his thing was unlucky? This feels actually anti-Christian to me. That's how they do it because I think the way they think of it is like it's because of Judas. He makes it unlucky because he's the traitor. Judas is a riot. I remember
Starting point is 00:04:36 Rice is saying, it's like that's not how you say it, but Judas is a riot? Yeah, I always thought it was like Iscariot. Yeah, I like it's a riot, okay? This dude is a riot. Judas is a riot yeah yeah i always thought it was like it's carry it yeah i like it's a riot okay this dude is a riot he's got it jesus we gotta we gotta eat together we gotta we gotta yeah um but yeah so it's not that or i mean that could be it why is friday my my best uh like the one that actually feels interesting to me at least is that uh 13 was an important number for pre-christian goddess worshiping cultures as 13 is the number of menstrual cycles in a year and they placed
Starting point is 00:05:11 great importance on fertility and the number 13 and so when christianity came through they were like okay 13 bad because we are trying to engage in pre-christianity goddess worshiping culture erasure right um and that doesn't feel like how information moves is that they're like okay so we just we come through sweep all that shit under the rug and install a little everybody be scared of this but friday's a chill day so friday's a chill day now but like back in the day before we had like the mandated weekend five-day work week the shout out to unions but in the 14th and 15th centuries when you just like worked when there was work and otherwise it was just kicking in party time uh friday was considered a day of misfortune as was noted in
Starting point is 00:06:07 chaucer's canterbury tales oh so the thing that really cemented it that brought them together was a 1907 book called friday the 13th friday comma the 13th because man they loved a fucking comma and a title back in the day but it wasn't even about a machete wielding killer you guys it was about a stockbroker who plays on superstitions about the date to create chaos on wall street loki style it was more of a loki yeah yeah send up 13th party pooper than a jason vorhees 13 party pooper and then it just kind of trickled into the media but well like a lot of things like whenever you try and look up the derivation of a word um in like the english language there's always like five explanations you never find good
Starting point is 00:07:01 reasons where the saying come from where this word come from like that was like one of our rules back at cracked was like after at a certain point we we were like writing articles about like well and this phrase comes from this and then we realized like you could find seven different explanations that were all like equally sourced or not sourced for where every saying came from and it feels like this is similar. It's just anything that has to do with language and like meaning and culture like this really, it's so fluid and trying to track something that's happening in language with
Starting point is 00:07:37 language is, is very difficult. We're not good at it. So we're not scared. I am scared because saying i'm not scared just the way the universe works will get me fucked up so i'll just say i am scared okay i take the bees approach you know what i mean if you act shook around the bees and they keep fucking with you unless you're like i don't give a fuck about y'all okay and they leave you alone yeah i just find
Starting point is 00:07:59 that being constantly afraid of everything helps me get through life good strategy yeah yeah good strategy strategy um all right uh we want to say r.i.p to lisa marie presley uh i guess on trends yesterday uh y'all talked about how she was rushed to the hospital but apparently it was too late and she passed away she was 54 and you know i think we also touched on how the died suddenly oh another cardiac arrest uh and before we were talking i think becca was like yeah i think we also touched on how the died suddenly oh another cardiac arrest uh and before we were talking i think becca was like yeah i think her father also had a similar fate as well like with cardiac issues and i don't know what could have been going on with her personally but yeah her father was a famous anti-drug crusader elvis presley who also just happened to be on
Starting point is 00:08:44 every single prescription pill that had been at that time, but those are drugs. And then great story where he went to Nixon's white house, uh, with a golden gun wearing a Cape and offered to be his drugs are, you know, a position that he made up and snitch on the Beatles.
Starting point is 00:09:00 So that's, I know I talk about it every time Elvis's name comes up. Um, but that is because it's the greatest thing that ever happened in the history of America and more people need to talk about it. Yep. That was the thing. Yes.
Starting point is 00:09:12 Uh, Royal silencer. Yeah. What the fuck is this? It's because of the fucking hairy, the hairy mania is to the point where way back burgers is like, Hey man, come check out the Royal Silencer, a one of a kind burger designed to silence the urge to spill family gossip to media outlets and whatever. They said it breaks all way back burgers rules by including a spare patty for the world's most notable spare. Wow. It looks like a monstrosity.
Starting point is 00:09:44 I am very hungry right now. so it actually looks so hungry like my stomach sounds like a fucking drum and bass concert inside man the way the cheese is melting is the cheese melting or did they dump like nacho cheese on that shit i mean it depends on who the food stylist is you know sometimes they do use nacho cheese to dupe you and other times you know they hit it with a little heat gun or something but anyway i just like that everybody's getting in on it now but for them they're like all right do a graphic and we'll just put a patty an extra patty that's the only thing that is this air you get it a spare bitch way back burgers you guys are such bitches um all right let's take a quick break. We'll be right back.
Starting point is 00:10:36 This summer, the nation watched as the Republican nominee for president was the target of two assassination attempts separated by two months. These events were mirrored nearly 50 years ago when President Gerald Ford faced two attempts on his life in less than three weeks. President Gerald R. Ford came stunningly close to being the victim of an assassin today. And these are the only two times we know of that a woman has tried to assassinate a U.S. president. One was the protege of infamous cult leader Charles Manson. I always felt like Lynette was kind of his right-hand woman. The other, a middle-aged housewife working undercover for the FBI in a violent revolutionary underground. Identified by police as Sarah Jean Moore.
Starting point is 00:11:12 The story of one strange and violent summer. This is Rip Current. Available now with new episodes every Thursday. Listen on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, fam. I'm Simone Boyce. I'm Danielle Robay. And we're the hosts of The Bright Side, the daily podcast from Hello Sunshine that is guaranteed to light up your day.
Starting point is 00:11:38 Every weekday, we bring you conversations with the culture makers who inspire us. Like our recent episode with dancer, actor, host of Dancing with the Stars, and now novelist, Julianne Hough. I feel really whole. I feel like the last few years, I've really unraveled a lot, which is part of what this book is about. And I really feel so content,
Starting point is 00:12:00 which is a word that used to scare the crap out of me. And I love that word now. Listen to The Bright Side from Hello Sunshine on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Substance use disorder and addiction is so isolating. Substance use disorder and addiction is so isolating. And so as a black woman in recovery, hope must be loud. It grows louder when you ask for help and you're vulnerable.
Starting point is 00:12:40 It is the thread that lets you know that no matter what happens, you will be okay. When we learn the power of hope recovery is possible find out how at start with hope.com brought to you by the national council for mental well-being shatterproof and the ad council and we're back and tesla is back baby uh they have decided to dramatically cut prices of their Model 3 and Model Y in the US by a weighted average of about $10,000 Wow 16%
Starting point is 00:13:13 Everything's going good over there, Elon? I mean, it couldn't be the stock price just tanking we saw it the second he started fucking around at Twitter. Yeah. But I guess,
Starting point is 00:13:26 and now I think the other, like, it's funny. You'll see, uh, pieces that are like, Elon makes a genius move. Like when you're like,
Starting point is 00:13:32 stop Cape and others are like, yikes, things are that bad, huh? That you're trying to make sure you can fight off the competition by slashing your prices. I know this has led to people being very upset if they recently bought one of these
Starting point is 00:13:45 cars for sure yeah yeah because they did in china i think first and people pulled up to the dealership they're like um so can i need my money yeah i need my money that i just paid you for this uh piece of shit clunker that you're just giving away for free now my trunk don't even close normal this makes me wonder so we do know el know Elon Musk is a listener to this podcast. Yep. And we told you, stop. We don't fuck with you,
Starting point is 00:14:09 but we don't fuck with you, but he does listen to us to try and get like cool ideas for things to do. And then he always fucks them up. But we were talking about how the subscription model where you, you know, do a big illogical price slashing, give the thing away for a low price at the outset, and then you're stuck to it and you have to keep paying.
Starting point is 00:14:34 Now, obviously, Tesla is not a subscription-based service, but it's kind of the closest to a subscription-based service of any car in the sense that they will brick that shit if you're not getting the tech updates and shit, if you're not downloading the software updates. So maybe he's giving away and trying to bring people into
Starting point is 00:14:56 the family so they can... Yeah, but the whole industry is moving in that direction where things that were just features in a car are now paywalled they're like oh yeah you paid all this money for a bmw oh you want remote start well that's a monthly fee it's in there it's in there we can unlock it the fucking car like i don't need you to fuck with me anymore i bought this shit off you now let me go do whatever the fuck i want to do versus like
Starting point is 00:15:20 oh you want that well you better we could as long as you're paying for it yeah anyways also Tesla's are just a complete nightmare to get any service on and much like Twitter has like no customer service or like no anything where you can like reach out and be like hey
Starting point is 00:15:39 my wheel fell off or like the auto stopped in the middle of the highway there's no human that you can contact. It's all, you know, it's all just a FAQ page. Essentially the FAQ page approach to, Oh,
Starting point is 00:15:54 right. Yeah. It's like, Oh, so your autonomous vehicle caused an eight car pileup. Did it click here? Yeah. Yellow jacket season two is trending because the new trailer is out i'm shook yeah man
Starting point is 00:16:08 i had goosebumps i mean i'm just so interested in seeing what more they reveal because towards the end of the first season you're like oh okay this is so much more than just people crashing into the the woods yeah people crash into woods but then also like it's really somebody watched lost and was like what if we like the thing that was good about season one of lost like what if we actually paid everything off and just like really focused on making it good instead of being like you know like lost got snowed under by network expectations and then being like all right we're gonna need 40 more of these right by next weekend asap hurry up and crank them out but they're they're creating a mystery box and you know mystery box shows don't always work out but i'm very intrigued something about christina
Starting point is 00:17:00 ricci when she looked so scared like when she's like only babies there's like a line that i almost was like oh my god we watched it together and we didn't comment on it while it was happening uh but that moment where she said only babies cry and then starts crying i was like christina ricci get in more movies and tv shows you are are a gift. Great acting happening. Yeah. We also have the magical cult leader character from season one. If you haven't seen the season one of yellow jackets, it's definitely worth your time.
Starting point is 00:17:35 Um, but it's about a girl's high school soccer team crashes in the woods, cult and cannibalism ensues. And the one who leads the cult we haven't seen as an adult because it's like a cutback between like the present and the past present in the past and we haven't seen lottie who's like the most mysterious we'll see yeah we don't and we don't know the casting is so good that they can't just be like, and Lottie is, you know, this person who's like sixth build in a bunch of CSI episodes. Like, it's going to be someone, right?
Starting point is 00:18:10 Yeah, I don't know. It's Rebecca Lobo, former WNBA star. You're like, oh, that's kind of weird. But OK. Wasn't sure they were enacting now. But yeah, may it come quickly because I can't wait to see that thing. Elijah Wood is in there. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:18:28 It looked like an AI version of him. He looks like preserved in, I don't know, like he's just in a cryo freeze in between acting jobs. He looked like a child. Yeah. So Reuters' Brian was saying that he and Paul Rudd are both the most kind of eerily unchanging of all the actors. The white guy actors. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:18:50 Yeah. Um, and then finally, uh, the takeout wrote an article about the best McDonald's in the world. It is not in the United States, not surprisingly, but according to the New York post UK, Michelin star chef, Gareth Ward has declared that the McDonald's in Welshpool, Wales is not only the best McDonald's in the world, but one of the top
Starting point is 00:19:11 three restaurants in the country of Wales. Wait, what? So apparently it has like its own menu. McDonald's are all franchised, right? So you can kind of go off. No, it doesn't mean you can just be like, yo, check
Starting point is 00:19:27 out my grandma's outside store thing. Yeah, I don't think you could do that. I think outside of the US, it's much... They adapt, right? Or that's truly just to be like, yo, we don't give a fuck. We don't know what to do. I thought they
Starting point is 00:19:43 actually developed those first. I think they must develop them for sure. But anyways, this one is, like, it just sounds good. Again, this might be an episode that we will go back and be like, what the fuck were we talking about? We were so hungry. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:19:59 We're the worst improv audience people. We're like, give us a suggestion. We're like, food because I'm hungry right now. Like, anything but that um the whale specific dishes they're inspiring rave reviews include the mcplant and just like an extensive vegetarian and vegan menu the mcrispy chicken sandwich with black pepper mayo uh and a sourdough bun cadbury chocolate mcflurry which i've always thought that would be an interesting idea. I think I had heard of it somewhere. They've got something called the Millionaire's Donut.
Starting point is 00:20:31 It is like a frosted caramel donut with a bunch of caramel inside. The Vegetable Deluxe Sandwich. Anyway. Jack, you look like you're reading it. I don't know. This is what they got.
Starting point is 00:20:44 Garlic Bites. Do you want to try those limited time only cheesy garlic bites i do love just reading about like what's being served at various mcdonald's around the world oh yeah yeah because it's it's truly like the grass is greener kind of thing i remember when i went to spain like i i try not to eat a ton of fast food all the time, but when I see like, oh my God, what is this Spanish McDonald's have for me with hormone or something? I'm like, yep. Yeah. A lot of ham. Let's do that. Very ham based menu. They're like ham, um, also just, um, you know? Um, but anyways, shout out to McDonald's and Wales. Let's just do shout out to wales shout out to wales a country great national anthem great national anthem what's the national anthem
Starting point is 00:21:33 like it's great because they teach the kids like and in school they teach you to harmonize wow so when you hear it there's like a version i heard during like a rugby match where like that was in wales and like the whole stadium was harmonizing like their own national anthem and I'm like yo this shit is okay good for you wow uh well those are some of the things that are trending on this Friday the 13th uh we are back on Tuesday uh not on Monday happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day to those in America who celebrate and everyone so we're taking that day off back on Tuesday with the whole last episode of the show. Until then, be kind to each other. Be kind to yourselves. Get the vaccine. Don't do nothing about white supremacy. And we
Starting point is 00:22:17 will talk to y'all on Tuesday. Bye. Bye. Bye. Bye. of the new podcast, Forgive Me For I Have Followed. Together, we'll be diving even deeper into the unbelievable stories behind 7M Films and Shekinah Church.
