Hello, the internet, and welcome to this episode of Joel, TrendBeat, and TrendSimmons. Hey, you know, he's still our teammate. He's still our brother, I think Joel and Beat said at the first game. Oh, he did?
Starting point is 00:02:25 I thought he was like, I'm sorry to that man, but I am not his babysitter. That was his statement in the press after Trent Simmons bailed on practice. But then before the game, he made a statement to the fans. And I think it was well-received. I mean, before we even do the proper intro, is there any way out of this? For Simmons? Like, even if Doc Rivers apologized, would that right things?
Starting point is 00:02:54 No. Or do you think it's completely, it's the situation, nothing can be done and no one is willing to do whatever it would take to actually make things tenable for him? Yeah, I think it's probably unsalvageable. I think there's probably
Starting point is 00:03:07 some mental things in place that are going to make it hard for him to ever play for the Sixers again because I'm just trying to imagine how fans would react to him being in the game, which
Starting point is 00:03:23 would make a delicate situation already like way worse. Um, right. I think they're just going to move forward. Yeah. Yeah. Anyways, I'm Jack and you're miles.
Starting point is 00:03:35 And these are some things that are trending. Yep. You know, we've been miles and I, in addition to being sports fans, we're also a billionaire fans. And yeah, you addition to being sports fans, we're also billionaire fans. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I root for Jeff Bezos and Miles roots for Elon Musk.
Starting point is 00:03:53 Musk daddy. Man, I am bummed today because it looks like Elon's taking the upper hand. You know what I'm saying here? People are saying he might be the first trillionaire oh god if that happens we have to march on his prop like we have to go to his house with pitchforks yeah we can't there's no way we can let anyway because of spacex they're saying because of that and the way that company is evolving he is on track to be the first trillionaire he's already a quarter of the way there he's 229 billion usd billion so yeah i wow isn't this so cool it's so fun to just like track and be like oh my gosh he's really gonna do it he's gonna be a trillie boy. Yeah. Oh, God.
Starting point is 00:04:45 What a world we're living in. And then he'll be like, I'm going to make a very generous donation of $1 million. Did he really? No, but I mean, that's how these people move. Because for poor people, that's the most you'll even make in your life, fool. That's literally a penny to me. But people who aspire to be million millionaires and billionaires like talk quote him like he is socrates like the yeah i mean i've i heard y'all must say this really
Starting point is 00:05:14 cool thing actually um it's just like all right i'm gonna jump out of my car while it's moving just to get out of this zoom call um get me out of here mister so there's more uh information coming out about the onset shooting that killed uh the dp on the movie rust that's in production i think still who knows if that will keep happening but details uh that came out uh first of all alec baldwin was practicing a cross draw which is pointing his gun at the camera when a live round uh struck the director in the shoulder and the cinematographer uh fatally in the chest uh steve wolf a special effects coordinator and theatrical firearm safety expert told cnn uh there were three error enormous errors committed resulting in the tragedy using a
Starting point is 00:06:05 real gun rather than a prop gun which i think i could have told them that yeah having a live round in the gun uh and having people stand so that's okay i'm not trying to be flippant but okay go on having a right not having a real bullet and having people stand behind the camera in the line of fire so like this is not groundbreaking um news the the thing that i i did find pretty revealing is there was another report that was an interview not with an outside expert but with somebody who was an actor on the movie um and they talked about how they like feared for their life like even before any of this happened because they were using real guns with blanks but that's like there's a reason that that is not the normal practice um the actor said everyone on the camera crew was protected by
Starting point is 00:06:59 shields and the camera was protected by a shield um the actor said noting that only the lens could be seen poking through protection so that made me question me being in front of the camera and sort of in between all that fire i actually did feel the blanks hitting my face and my body i could feel the wind from the shotgun being discharged he said calling it terrifying production on a rushed schedule. It was heavy. It was strong. It was life-threatening. It felt too surreal. Wow.
Starting point is 00:07:29 I mean, it seems like those are the reports from the set. The people who knew what they were doing, who were union certified, walked off the set because they were like, this is too dangerous. Right. They thought this was going to happen and then it did and outball will may end up being liable because he's a producer on the film unfortunate i mean yeah again it's so preventable and many yeah it's like why do you still need to use these guns like i get for certain things maybe you want to see the slide on a hand you want to see shit blow back when you know just for like some good slow-mo shots but there are there are props that can do that and
Starting point is 00:08:09 you can add in everything else in post um it's just cutting corners that's the same way that people get killed and on jobs all the time is cutting corners but again they uh they got enough insurance to offset and right whereas it's called in capitalism a calculated risk. Yeah, exactly. Well, Kyrie Irving protesters, which is a thing that exists now, stormed the Barclays Center over their belief that he should be allowed to play, even though he's refusing to get the vaccine. Even though he's refusing to get the vaccine. It's like they broke through barricades. This was all shortly before a tip-off against the Hornets, which the Nets were supposed to be one of the best teams in the league,
Starting point is 00:09:00 if not the best team in the league, lost. And yeah, I i mean when you listen to quotes from kevin durant like the best player on the team who you know is being asked like why why do you guys why why do you guys look like you kind of suck right now um you know he's just trying to talk around it and just but it seems pretty frustrating uh it seems like he's putting his teammates in a pretty frustrating situation, but where he's not putting white supremacists in a frustrating situation,
Starting point is 00:09:29 they're having a blast. I mean, yeah, he's one of Diamond and Silk's new heroes. So, cool, man. You can find your new fan base right there. Just stop talking about this dude. You know, just stop. It doesn't further the conversation to say a rigid ignorant person continues to be ignorant yeah okay yeah and i think with chapelle's i don't
Starting point is 00:09:53 know what it was a youtube video or oh yeah he put on his stories where he's like i'll meet with the trans community under my own conditions you're like please just just stop talking just don't don't worry about it don't worry about it man just just like you said're like, please, just stop talking. Just don't worry about it. Don't worry about it, man. Just like you said, you like being canceled. So just shut the fuck up and go do your own thing. All right. Let's take a quick break.
Starting point is 00:10:13 We'll be right back. Daphne Caruana Galizia was a Maltese investigative journalist who on October 16, 2017, was murdered. There are crooks everywhere you look now. The situation is desperate. My name is Manuel Delia. I am one of the hosts of Crooks Everywhere, a podcast that unhurts the plot to murder a one-woman Wikileaks. Daphne exposed the culture of crime and corruption that were turning her beloved country into a mafia state. And she paid the ultimate price. Listen to Crooks Everywhere starting September 25th on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts
Starting point is 00:11:00 or wherever you get your podcasts. So y'all, this is Questlove, and I'm here to tell you about a new podcast I've been working on with the Story Pirates and John Glickman called Historical Records. It's a family-friendly podcast. Yeah, you heard that right. A podcast for all ages. One you can listen to and enjoy with your kids starting on September 27th. I'm going to toss it over to the host of Historical Records, Nimany, to tell you
Starting point is 00:11:31 all about it. Make sure you check it out. Hey y'all, Nimany here. I'm the host of a brand new history podcast for kids and families called Historical Records. Historical Records brings history to life through hip-hop. Flash, slam, another one gone. Bash, bam, another one gone. The crack of the bat and another one gone. The tip of the cap, there's another one gone. Each episode is about a different inspiring figure from history, like this one about Claudette Colvin,
Starting point is 00:12:02 a 15-year-old girl in Alabama who refused to give up her seat on the city bus nine whole months before Rosa Parks did the same thing. Check it. Get the kids in your life excited about history by tuning in to Historical Records. Because in order to make history, you have to make some noise. Listen to Historical Records starting on September 27th on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. This summer, the nation watched as the Republican nominee for president was the target of two assassination attempts, separated by two months.
Starting point is 00:12:48 These events were mirrored nearly 50 years ago, when President Gerald Ford faced two attempts on his life in less than three weeks. President Gerald R. Ford came stunningly close to being the victim of an assassin today. And these are the only two times we know of that a woman has tried to assassinate a U.S. president. One was the protege of infamous cult leader Charles Manson. I always felt like Lynette was kind of
Starting point is 00:13:12 this right-hand woman. The other, a middle-aged housewife working undercover for the FBI in a violent revolutionary underground. Identified by police as Sarah Jean Moore. The story of one strange and violent summer. This is Rip Current, available now with new episodes every Thursday. Listen on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:13:39 Smokey the Bear. Then you know why Smokey tells you when he sees you passing through. Remember, please be careful. It's the least that you can do. It's what you desire. Don't play with matches. Don't play with fire. After 80 years of learning his wildfire prevention tips, Smokey Bear lives within us all.
Starting point is 00:14:00 Learn more at SmokeyBear.com. And remember, only you can prevent wildfires. Brought to you by the USDA Forest Service, your state forester, and the Ad Council. And we're back. And the FBI is reporting that the year 2020 had the most reported hate crimes since 2001. That's the most hate crimes in the U.S., and it's not shocking. There was a 76% increase in anti-Asian hate crimes,
Starting point is 00:14:34 although they make up a pretty small percentage of the 8,263 hate crimes reported in 2020, which, you know, it should be noted is always a very small portion of what actually happens but the 50 of the hate crimes were uh crimes against black people um which you know that's not wow in 2020 yeah you believe anything happened right here i don't remember um people turning up uh to cape for white supremacy and that oh yeah yeah yeah yeah um so that's you know that's the very real shit going on that i feel like is the consequence of these stories that i feel like people are tired
Starting point is 00:15:22 of talking about like with trump and uh police brutality and it's just like yeah but people are still you know being victimized by hate crimes yeah as a result of them and la is a huge uh place for like southern california huge hotbed for anti-asian racism yeah at the moment so i mean it's not surprising just sadly it's just it all seems to coincide with you know fear of a less white america in some instances not to say that all hate crimes are committed by white people because they're certainly not um but i mean you can just see like we're seeing the the angst of uh a changing america being played out and like every level from school boards to you know these increases in hate crimes yeah yeah i mean the the communities that were seeing the fastest demographic changes i think you talked about in a episode a month back like
Starting point is 00:16:22 had also some of the highest proportion of people who were at the January 6th insurrection. That also coincides with how turnt up school board meetings were. Right. There was a pretty strong connection to
Starting point is 00:16:38 changing demographics and the outrage you saw in some school board meetings. Critical race theories making my neighbors not white. Right. Okay. This is kind of a cool love story. Japan's
Starting point is 00:16:53 Princess Mako Mako. Japan's Princess Mako is moving to a one bedroom New York apartment after marrying a commoner by you know, by, uh,
Starting point is 00:17:06 Royal standards. Uh, so four years after publicly announcing their engagement, um, princess Marco has officially, uh, married her college sweetheart, uh,
Starting point is 00:17:17 and Royal representatives filed the company's paperwork at a registry office in Tokyo on Tuesdayuesday morning and then like hours later the newlyweds held a press conference uh and basically said that they're um gonna renounce she's gonna renounce her crown or you know yeah i think that maybe that she loses her title she loses her title because she married a commoner um so japanese media was so fair to her it was really really wonderful to see uh them not be completely toxic and just oh my god it it's funny because when i remember i was like a kid when she was born and right everyone like and i growing up it's like oh look at the little princess
Starting point is 00:18:06 and blah blah blah and just sort of you know there was this very sanitized version especially just like in japan everything's so much about status that yeah it was interesting to see like as this story like evolved i'm like oh shit is she gonna do a full harry like is she actually gonna just advocate for herself and not kind of do the thing to just pay deference to her, you know, divine right of, of royalty or whatever the fuck it is. Um,
Starting point is 00:18:32 so yeah, it was, I think like brave for her. She also like, uh, like she was going to get a, like a massive payout to like over like a million dollars for leaving the family.
Starting point is 00:18:44 And she's like, nah, I yeah for leaving the family and she's like nah turned it down um because she's just like i don't like how people are just scrutinizing this relationship like this is who i'm into and the idea that it's like has to be someone that isn't a commoner it's like absurd so it's kind of cool just like her statements on just she's just very like straightforward. Like, yeah, you know, the,
Starting point is 00:19:06 uh, abuse that we suffered from the media, like I'm still suffering from some of that. And, you know, just like talks about it like a person would, you know, it's almost like a,
Starting point is 00:19:16 a human being caught in the body of like somebody who, uh, is part of this massive like where that's not compatible with humanity. It's one of those things where it's like, no, you're royalty, so you're not human, so don't express human needs or emotions.
Starting point is 00:19:36 You should be like, I love it, thank you. One bedroom apartment in New York, though. I do want to see this one bedroom apartment. Yeah, I know, right? She's like, like well it's a massive loft and so uh it's it's pretty but i mean i don't know i mean i don't clearly she didn't grow up like a normal japanese person but you know japanese people are pretty good in small spaces like when you look at the apartments and stuff people live in like it's yeah housing culture isn't like how it is in the u.s or it's like i need 70 foot ceilings and a media room like you people get by
Starting point is 00:20:10 on in you know small spaces but i'm sure just for her being with her husband uh is probably like most normal human beings her first and foremost concern am i happy and with my partner there you go yeah and finally mo brooks trending uh this is just one of the great statements uh public statements that i've ever heard like one that you would think uh was pre-written but um seems like it's just kind of somebody like squirming uh as somebody asked him a question they weren't prepared for absolutely mo brooks again i believe he was wearing a bulletproof vest uh on january 6th cool because you know you never know um and he's been under a lot of scrutiny as like one of the members in congress one of the many members in congress they're like you were like rah-rah-ing
Starting point is 00:21:04 this shit what the fuck are you talking about like no i was i was talking about the midterms like no fool you weren't um and now he's just out loud being like i didn't i don't have anything to do planning the january 6th commission and then said quote i don't know if my staff did but if they did i'd be proud of them for helping to put together a rally lawful under the first amendment at the ellipse to protest voter fraud and election theft so that feels very much i'm getting ahead of a story where it's gonna i'm gonna i may be implicated in being an architect of the january 6th rally or maybe a you know provider of information i don't know but that that don't know why you felt compelled to say that but yeah i mean it's probably that rolling
Starting point is 00:21:52 stone article because that has a lot of people um looking at many of these members of congress i'm like can we see your phone records like were you facetiming people like where you were what's going on there so the the rolling stone article doesn't have the names basically it just says they do no they don't okay oh it's like all the ones you talked about yesterday like marjorie taylor green madison cawthorne mo brooks all ghosts are that whole crew yeah um yeah damn and then i think everyone else said um like when marjorie taylor green like they asked her like, yo,
Starting point is 00:22:25 what's up with this thing that, uh, like Rolling Stone saying like people were talking to you like for the January six thing. And she said, quote, the only thing that she was quote, very involved in was objecting to the election results on January
Starting point is 00:22:39 sixth. Then apparently when she gave like another comment about like this Rolling Stone article article she said shouldn't they cover music okay yeah your honor they don't even do news so how can we and you've seen those top 500 albums that list is trash how can we trust this publication i don't know where she's going with that but yeah what if she had really great taste in music that would be the most unexpected big l's the big picture uh one of the most slept on rap albums you're like what the fuck
Starting point is 00:23:18 um i mean this is uh it seems like a bigger deal than is being made of it that this reporting are the new york times backing up the reporting what's happening no they are i think it's just more that people are treating this information as a full-on gotcha got him right moment and it's just so it's just very superficial it's very surface level we've we observed these things right so a lot of people like don't start don't start spiking the football because of this article right they need to dig deep they need to dig really really come with something that like if you're you know building a case that is actually going to say you can't just get away with them being like i don't what i can't talk to. Right. That's kind of what a defense would look like at this point.
Starting point is 00:24:06 It's gotta be like, well, why are you texting? Why is the, why is the content of the text, your location within the Capitol building or something like that? That's something a little bit, you know,
Starting point is 00:24:16 tangible that I think, uh, will arise at a level where you can start saying things. But again, people are so, you know, rightfully stressed about whether or not there's going to be
Starting point is 00:24:28 any form of accountability or justice that everything's like, okay, now, that shouldn't have been enough. The bulletproof vest is pretty wild. Like, that's... Like, if you're showing up to work in a bulletproof vest... At a peaceful
Starting point is 00:24:43 rally, right? Yeah, at a peaceful rally. That's, hell yeah, man yeah man all right well those are the things that are trending on this tuesday afternoon we are back tomorrow with a whole ass episode of the show until then be kind to each other be kind to yourselves get the vaccine don't do nothing about white supremacy and And we will talk to you all tomorrow. Bye. Bye. In 1982, Atari players had one game on their minds, Sword Quest. Because the company had promised $150,000 in prizes to four finalists.
