National Clean Off Your Desk Day day i will never do that national apricot day and national static electricity day hell yeah yeah feeling that balloons and static electricity they go together so there's something yeah balloon ascension day just like let your
Starting point is 00:02:40 balloons go is that well the image is of all hot air balloons. So what it does is it commemorates the first balloon flight in the United States in 1793. Damn. That's all we had for a little while. Yeah, I know. Yeah. Not in my lifetime, okay? I know people like to suggest that I was around for a pre-Wright Brothers era of air travel. Not true.
Starting point is 00:03:06 Yeah, they used to do scouting missions in the Civil War in hot air balloons. That's how bad at everything everyone was. So they would just take it up and be like, Oh, yeah, I think I see the battlefield from over here. Looks pretty gruesome. Seems easy to chew that with a scotch. Anyways, my name, well, it's jack o'brien aka when you're on a holiday you might find a price to pay all that drink and mountain dew
Starting point is 00:03:38 the sugar will grow on you on an island in the sun. Get these plumpers big as fuck. Sugar makes me feel so fine I can't control my brain. Hip, hip. That is courtesy of Lex Lugy, Mr. Lugrius.
Starting point is 00:04:00 Yeah, appreciate you, man. And I'm thrilled to be joined, as always, by my co-host, Mr. Miles Gray! Miles Gray, a.k. Yeah. Appreciate you, man. And I'm thrilled to be joined, as always, by my co-host, Mr. Miles Gray. Miles Gray, a.k.a. I love Jerry's Pizzeria. I love Lambo above all. When I tweeted this to Greta, she said I got tiny balls. I'm the Manosphere Messiah.
Starting point is 00:04:21 I'm the king of all the clowns. But they put my ass in handcuffs and they took me down. Okay. Shout out to shithead Aaron Tate or Andrew Tate, whatever your name is. Peace out to you. It's Miles Gray. Thank you to Salvador Jolly on the Discord. And also
Starting point is 00:04:38 I want to give it a little announcement. I have a bit of a new AKA that I'm going to be entering soon. Okay. Call me Big Daddy Gray gray father of the child, because look, I've been keeping it low. Uh, but some of you follow,
Starting point is 00:04:52 you know, people on social media may have found out that I am expecting my first child and I am very excited. Uh, it's, it could happen quite literally at any moment. So if I suddenly take off for parental leave, know that it's to celebrate my impending parenthood. So shout out to Her Majesty as well.
Starting point is 00:05:11 Yes. Very exciting. Congratulations to the both of you. You guys are going to be amazing parents. Thank you. And this is not a joke. I know half the time I say shit sincere on here, people go, oh, I thought he was fucking around. No, I feel like, look, I can't.
Starting point is 00:05:22 I think people recognize that you are a funny person who wouldn't tell an unfunny joke like this it's like so bad or they're like yeah dude and i'm like have a kid good one all right what else yeah what else what else i do appreciate that you waited for just the right andrew tate aka to announce i don't know why i was part of me was like do i do that but i also had my eye on this aka and i was like i gotta get that out the way too well but hit the man up with some good uh fatherhood aka yeah so he doesn't have to yeah also man i'm telling you every moment i have in my house where like it's quiet i'm realizing it's the last time my house is gonna sound like that you know it's actually pretty quiet in the early months because the baby sleeps
Starting point is 00:06:10 a lot right or i guess i'm trying to like i like it i was liking it likening it to somebody like i feel like i'm in like saving private ryan like on a d-day landing craft we're like yeah we're about to hit the shore and i'm like yo it's, it's coming. It's coming. But I'm, like, kissing my cross and shit. Like, here we go. Here we go, motherfucker. Let's go! Just in a room quietly by yourself shouting, let's go. Let's fucking go!
Starting point is 00:06:33 Her Majesty's like, everything all right in there? Yeah, yeah. Let's fucking go! Yep. Yeah, sorry. Anyways, appropriate. Yeah. May not be the most appropriate AKA for that announcement, but we have
Starting point is 00:06:46 the most appropriate guest. We're thrilled to be joined in our third seat. But one of the classics, an early guest, one of our favorites, one of your favorites, been way too long since he's been on. He's a hilarious actor, improviser, who writes on TV shows like Grand Crew,
Starting point is 00:07:02 video games, TV shows about video games, please welcome Thought Dad, trademark, it's Ify Waterway! Yes! Yes! A.K.A. Ify Shuku! Every time I check my bank account, Ify Shuku!
Starting point is 00:07:16 You wouldn't even believe my bank amount, Ify Shuku! I count up the whole goddamn amount, Ify Shuku! I made it! And sometimes I forget that I'm famous just like I'm Amos. Turn around. It's the worst Lil Uzi Vert verse of 2022. He ruined a Baby Keem song. But beside that bar, it's actually the worst just bar.
Starting point is 00:07:42 The verse itself, okay. That bar, he made a famous Amos reference in the year of our Lord 2022. But yes, I'm here. The dad in me appreciates that. The dad in me sees the dad in you. Yeah, you're like, oh, it's time to pack my kid's lunch. You're right. You're like, I'm late for school.
Starting point is 00:08:02 You're like, hold on. Let me put on I i just want to rock by little uzi for you ready for this one that song goes it has no reason being as good as it is but it is i have a question for you dads out here is it do how often are you like it when when you're trying to like rock a baby you know what i? Are you do you ever just rap a verse? Like because I feel like people have baby appropriate songs, but I have so many rap verses memorized that I feel like if I could summon it, I could be like, you know, I could just lean into it. You know, like, oh, baby, I rock a fly baby in the summertime for sure. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:08:40 OK, yeah. And you look there. They're so young. They're not even going to remember all the words you're using. So you can just go full explicit on that rock on the first few years. Right. Pretend I know the whole rap God verse by Eminem. You know, I was spinning that shit perfect when you were a baby.
Starting point is 00:08:55 Yeah. You just don't remember it because you were a child. Yeah. It's definitely like more of my brain is Dr. Seuss shit now. Like I just realized like we were waiting in line somewhere and we started doing, I don't know, like some silly, you know, shit. And I realized I know all of Dr. Seuss ABCs like by heart. Oh, shit. You can just like spit that back, which is not like that hard. You already know what order it comes in because it's the ABCs.
Starting point is 00:09:25 hard you already know what order it comes in because of because it's the abcs but yeah there's a lot of rhymes that uh start taking up space that used to be occupied by ghostface i think yeah for sure italian italian music down the river with your chick clinging like that's that's gone now to my bit all player you mad for that's right right. Ify, how are you doing, man? It's been way too long. Yeah, I know it's been way too long. It's, you know, I've been trying to squeeze in here between gigs, but like it really was a quick runner last year because I was doing Twisted Metal at the top of the year. And then right after Twisted Metal, I was back in Grand Crew. But now, you know, I'm chilling um you know you know
Starting point is 00:10:06 developing some stuff you know inside baseball but you know now i have free time i've been dying to come on the pod and it's now is the perfect time because i think if i would have went in when i was like right after the room when i was just like you know like neck deep in writing a tv show and not coming up for air. But now, you know, I'm back on my gym routine and part of my gym routine, which, you know, this, if you don't know this already, you know, Zeitgang, if you are on Spotify, you can do the daily drive. That's, that's my shit. And what they do when you do the daily drive is they mix in the NPR kind of like daily up first. And then it goes into your music playlist.
Starting point is 00:10:49 And then they'll pick like a podcast that's your vibe. I think they figured out that I'm a leftist. So then it goes to Marketplace. Then it'll place more playlists. And then if you come back in the day, you'll get the updates with NPR's's kind of up next updates which is great so why are you trying to hold on man i just told you i was having a kid you're trying to take money out his mouth okay right there because you know we have a morning show too and then we will update you later in the day i also give music recommendations but yes uh shout out that other
Starting point is 00:11:17 oh yeah yeah that other i know i totally came on here but you know definitely uh because when i was in my deep pod one i was i was double dipping uh you know listening to y'all listening to this and but also i do think spotify does need to get the uh tdz because y'all would fit the vibe more because it is funny having to go from npr's you know tone to like baby keem and i'm like right this would never be on kpcc or wherever you're listening like they are never gonna be like okay the needle drop after ira glass right it's gonna be the they're like get ready and do it sometimes and it's it's embarrassing every time they do it is jarring whereas like if the needle drop came off off of us you'd be like yeah that makes sense i
Starting point is 00:12:01 mean we we go out on some bangers so um yeah if you work in spotify definitely let them know to get tdz in that day yeah let them know that's my new campaign to make up for what i just did i'm definitely gonna see what i can do to pull some strings man also grand crew was dope i gotta tell you oh thank you so good yeah i can confidently say this next season is gonna be funnier uh you know and i think you know if you if you're like i feel like when you're in the city and you're tapped in everyone kind of knows that first season is kind of more establishing everyone's relationships yeah no and second season we were able to just go like what's the funniest shit we
Starting point is 00:12:41 can yeah i feel like you guys were able to get to that pretty quickly though like oh yeah after like the first few if this show really fucking caught its stride and i still love that pipe jerry or jerry pipe joke i don't know who wrote that one oh yeah i forget who did that but i what i do remember is i was trying so hard to be pipe jerry i was and then when they when we saw pipe jerry i, no, y'all got the right one. Because your boy is buff, but that guy was shredded. That was Pipe Jerry. Wait, tell the Pipe Jerry joke. What is it? Oh, so Nikki in her phone has Pipe Jerry and Jerry Pipe.
Starting point is 00:13:19 One is a handyman, one is a stripper. And she calls the stripper up when she wanted the handyman but he comes in as a handyman so they think it's him and he just starts getting it i just love the fucking difference of jerry pipe and pipe the fine balance yeah yes all right if you were going to get to know you a little bit better in a moment first we're going to tell our listeners a couple of the things we're talking about. We're going to talk about this Southwest Airlines meltdown story that happened over the three weeks that we were out. But there's been some investigative journalism that revealed that this was like widely foreseen and everybody was hitting up.
Starting point is 00:14:01 So Pete Buttigieg, as the secretary of transportation, like he directly oversees that shit. He is the one person who's in charge of regulating the airlines. And people have been hitting him up because basically the same shit happened about a year ago to Southwest. People have been hitting him up to like regulate, to do about that and he just ignored ignored ignored so we're going to talk about that and also how the mainstream media like ignored that story ignored the investigative journalism and just kind of the state of the you know mainstream left center left media that is just like kind of becoming i don't know they're playing right into fox's hands so we'll talk about that yeah then we'll talk about fox being just a fucking mess we might talk about some overall like there's some suing of big corporations happening so some good news maybe with regulating the free market aka just rich people getting to do whatever the fuck they want and then we'll talk about the trend on netflix where they keep canceling their top shows like a show will be number two in their top 10 list and then they'll like cancel it a week later
Starting point is 00:15:17 so we'll talk about why that's happening plenty more but first iffy we do like to ask our guest what is something from your search history yeah i mean looking at my search history right now i got universal tickets shibari new dom tips dom tips mammoth the homie adam shatz uh the skyrim special edition resolution fix i think we'll focus on that i've been playing skyrim uh you know i've been running it back on on skyrim i by running it back i mean my first time playing it that's been my biggest gaming blind spot for years and i'm really hyped at how excited people have been like there's been a lot of new uh viewers on twitch because i've been doing it as a twitch kind of play along and i didn't realize how much the fervor of the skyrim fandom would be because
Starting point is 00:16:07 they're like oh we get to see someone play our favorite game for the first time right and that and so it's been fun for that reason but it also is funny because you're now playing a game where everyone knows how everything happens they know when you're doing the wrong thing and the right thing but they're very much real chill about it being like, do what you think is right. Do what you think. But, and sometimes they'll be like,
Starting point is 00:16:31 Oh, okay. You chose that, but it's really, except that. Yeah, exactly. It's,
Starting point is 00:16:35 it's like a fun way to play a game that I've never really considered because either, either I'm playing a game as it has been out or I'm playing like call of duty or apex, which you can just kind of play any any way so i've been having a good time for it minor plug if you if that sounds tight to you uh definitely uh been doing it on twitch and if you don't want to uh wait around to while i'm doing it i do plan on like making it a neat video for you to just kind
Starting point is 00:17:03 of go through and check out uh in the past but when did skyrim come out like i was looking at i was like yo skyrim came out like three years ago right four years ago yeah i remember that's all no 2011 2011 yeah and i just somehow missed it and i looked at it and it was because it was between fallout 3 and New Vegas. And I was big in a Fallout, which is why Skyrim is such a layup because they're both by Bethesda. They're both kind of open world exploration games that lets you kind of play it however you want. The only difference is one is fantasy. One is post-apocalyptic. But I think what happened was three just bled into New Vegas for me.
Starting point is 00:17:43 So I just didn't even look at Skyrim. I was like, right. So it's been fun. And it just, you know, I didn't, there was no worry if I wasn't going to like it,
Starting point is 00:17:53 but it is a super fun to play this game and kind of like, you know, you run through the, one of the classics. Yeah. Tap into people's nostalgia. Like I feel like, man,
Starting point is 00:18:04 I should do. I, I, I'm like, I'm like two hours short of finishing last of us and like now and like i know how it ends but i'm like no i need to go back through that but i get the whole nostalgia thing of like i love watching people listen to rage against the machine for the first time like those are youtube reaction videos i love seeing like i love especially watching black people listen who have not listened to rage hear rage for the first time and they're like hold on hold on hold on he said he's going down rodeo with a shotgun these people ain't seen a brown-skinned man since their grandparents bought one oh no what is this and i'm like yes breathe it in breathe it in so i totally i can totally
Starting point is 00:18:48 see how video game people are getting that same kick oh yeah so that's yeah it's truly truly fun especially if you're enjoying it i think i listened to a podcast once where somebody was like watching jaws for the first time and was just like this is stupid like what is this shit and i was like no yeah anyways what is uh something you think is overrated i'm gonna explain because it's gonna seem basic and then i'm gonna explain okay uh so the overrated that i'm gonna say is trying to be different you know it's it's we started off 2023 we're getting all these end of the year lists and i'm so fucking tired of reading all these film bros trying so hard not to pick everything everywhere all at once and you know you know it happens every year but there just is something a very special stank on my tongue with it when it
Starting point is 00:19:39 comes for this like asian-led film that you don't want to pretend it's like we saw it kind of happen with parasite but i think they're trying extra hard i want to pretend it's tight. We saw it kind of happen with Parasite, but I think they're trying extra hard. I do think that it's probably people who didn't go to Emerson because that definitely was an Emerson mafia movie. And they really are like, nah, I went to USC film school. I cannot give this film its flowers. But we see it every year and I'm so tired of it. And I just mean it in i like that was something i did in high school i think i might have said this story before on the pod i think i might have had this take before on the pod because it is a take that just needs to i just want to have to stop saying it but if everybody likes something
Starting point is 00:20:18 and you don't have to dislike it because it doesn't make you cooler like i said i didn't listen to MF doom for so long because everyone would like them. And I was trying to be different. And I, that was one of the biggest regrets of my life because I remember I got the food special edition and it had a show, uh, at the knitting factory in LA back when that was still a thing. And I was like real hyped. I was like, Oh, I got to go to this. And then I realized it was years old. I got it. So, you know, I got it so late and I've never been able to see him live. And I was like real hyped. I was like, oh, I got to go to this. And then I realized it was years old. I got it.
Starting point is 00:20:50 You know, I got it so late and I've never been able to see him live and I never will. All because why I was trying to be, you know, different. I was trying to go against the grain. And if, you know, if you genuinely do not like it, I then that's fine, too. But also don't think that I also think that you know you don't need to shit on people who do like it and pretend like you know you are the the taste of movie because if you're saying everything everywhere all at once wasn't your favorite but your top movie is a white lead white written white created movie then you're whack to me i'm sorry right like i gotta say look white people they got some hits you know you know we we know, we know white people got some hits.
Starting point is 00:21:25 But I don't think they got the, I don't think they got the crown last year. Simply put, don't think they got the crown. I think that comes from like the just not wanting to be one of the, like there, there's something that I think at first, if you don't like spend time with it, the idea that there are a billion other people on the planet and you're just one of them can be upsetting. And I think that comes from that place, like you wanting to deny or at least like get some momentary feeling that like you're different. with the fact that you're one of eight billion people and just like kind of accept that there there's like a joy in that of like you you're part of a communal human experience and like you're all enjoying the same thing at the same time but i yeah i i used to have that i used to be like i don't like them anymore because they everybody else likes them so yeah i like the white stripes well i saw them in a bar when there was only like 20 people there
Starting point is 00:22:26 so now i think they're whack because everybody likes them i only focus do a little white label vinyl so i can get you like right dude calm down i mean it is definitely like that is that it's that thing and i think it's a you know even more so which i'm sure will dip into this thought process more because i've been thinking about it a lot lately. Just another one of those, you know, American individualism type things where it's like, I have to be the guy I like. Why would I be the same as anyone? I must be the different person. And it's like, OK, cool.
Starting point is 00:22:58 It's kind of like when you see somebody be like, this person stole my tweet. And like, there are a lot of tweet thieves. I've seen it happen to me. I've seen it happen to a lot of friends, but sometimes I'm like, oh no, that's just a basic idea. Especially when it's like a retweeted, you know, response to something where it's like, well, that's bound to happen. Y'all are working off of the same prompt. Y'all are, you know, y'all are working off the same prompt. We all kind of live in the same reality. There's going to be some overlap. And I learned that very quickly when I worked on at midnight, because when we were writing for that show, all the writers were writing into a doc.
Starting point is 00:23:35 So we weren't like, we didn't know what jokes everyone was doing. And one of the big things we had to do was go over and get rid of duplicates, because if you're working from the same prompt, you're going to land on the same punchline like very often. So I think this idea that like if I came up with an idea, it's original and no one could ever have this same idea is just false. And sometimes if somebody, you know, stole a thing, if it is not very clear and personal to you maybe they i think give people the benefit of the doubt let's not make it twitter more of a battleground than it already is and also like just let your fucking ego go you know what i mean that's the only reason people you're gonna get so turnt up being like well that's not me because it wouldn't be me over here saying that objectively the best film of the year was this film like it's got to be different because that's my identity or whatever yeah let that shit cool because that's purely how i operated like as a
Starting point is 00:24:29 teen like in my early 20s was like my shit's different i will never be like you and it was really just because i was angry at a bunch of shit rather than like kind of i guess more energetically like acknowledging like yeah man all good like you could like what you like. I like what I like. That doesn't make me cooler. That doesn't make you cooler. Because I think the other thing, too, is you get caught up in people's opinions. Like, oh, the cool people think this or that. And now I want to be like that.
Starting point is 00:24:54 Just do you. It's much easier, much less stress. You know what I mean? Oh, yeah. All right. Let's take a quick break. We'll come back. We'll hear what you're underrated.
Starting point is 00:25:00 Let's take a quick break. We'll come back. We'll hear what you're underrated. When you think of Mexican culture, you think of avocado, mariachi, delicious cuisine, and of course, lucha libre. It doesn't get more Mexican than this. Lucha libre is known globally because it is much more than just a sport and much more than just entertainment. Lucha libre is a type of storytelling. It's a dance. It's tradition. It's culture. This is Lucha Libre Behind the Mask, a 12-episode podcast in both English and Spanish about the history and cultural richness of Lucha Libre. And I'm your host, Santos Escobar, the emperor of Lucha Libre
Starting point is 00:25:41 and a WWE superstar. Join me as we learn more about the history behind this spectacular sport from its inception in the United States to how it became a global symbol of Mexican culture. We'll learn more about some of the most iconic heroes in the ring. This is Lucha Libre Behind the Mask. Listen to Lucha Libre Behind the Mask as part of My Cultura Podcast Network on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you stream podcasts. I'm Dr. Laurie Santos, host of the Happiness Lab podcast.
Starting point is 00:26:14 As the U.S. elections approach, it can feel like we're angrier and more divided than ever. But in a new, hopeful season of my podcast, I'll share what the science really shows, that we're surprisingly more united than most people think. We all know something is wrong in our culture, in our politics, and that we need to do better and that we can do better. With the help of Stanford psychologist Jamil Zaki. It's really tragic. If cynicism were a pill, it'd be a poison. We'll see that our fellow humans, even those we disagree with, are more generous than we assume.
Starting point is 00:26:47 My assumption, my feeling, my hunch is that a lot of us are actually looking for a way to disagree and still be in a relationship with each other. All that on the Happiness Lab. Listen on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you listen to podcasts. I'm Renee Stubbs, and I'm obsessed with sports, especially tennis. On the Renee Stubbs Tennis Podcast, I get the chance to do what I love, talk about how tennis and other women's sports are growing and changing, and what the future holds. I think I just genuinely loved what I did.
Starting point is 00:27:32 I loved this waking up, putting on my sports gear. I still believe it was so rewarding. Maybe you can relate to it as well. As a woman, I think it's a very powerful feeling to have a job at which you're able to see improvements in real time. On the show, we dissect everything going on in the game straight from the biggest players in the world. Plus, serve up recaps of all the matches and headlines in the game, including a rundown of the US Open every Monday.
Starting point is 00:27:59 Listen to the Renee Stubbs Tennis Podcast every Monday on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Presented by Capital One, founding partner of iHeart Women's Sports. And we're back. And if you, as you know, we like to ask our guests, not just what's overrated, but what's underrated. What's something you think is underrated?
Starting point is 00:28:24 Boy, boy, boy. Let me, let me tell you, we're staying. This is going to be a very cinephile over under for me because I got to put on, um, nanny. It's called nanny, not the nanny. It came out last year. I saw it at Sundance. Uh, it was directed by, uh, Nick Yatu Jusu. And it's about an African woman who hopes her new job as a nanny
Starting point is 00:28:46 will help bring her young son to the United States. And it's this like, very like, I would just, I'm going to say it's like a thriller slash horror. It's very slow paced. It taps into African mythology once it really gets going. And there's a lot of beautiful visuals.
Starting point is 00:29:03 Shout out to Rina Yang, who did the cinematographyography and i think it kind of flew under the radar to me it was the best film that came out of sundance that year and then you know it was uh amazon who bought it so it was on prime video which you know they if it ain't jack reacher you ain't gonna hear about it yeah it is wild how much good shit just goes just yeah disappears goes there to not exist yeah it's it's it's like they put budget in like promoting like three shows like we knew about ring of power we knew about uh the wheel of time and we knew about jack reacher but there are so many movies that go there that fly under the radar so if you have prime video which i'm sure you probably do because we all have prime even though we don't fuck with bezos like that we like getting our shit in two days that you just can't beat it
Starting point is 00:29:55 and like i said bezos if you want to win us over use that money and solve world hunger stop using the lip service i love that he did read the room though i was like i'm getting rid of i'm getting rid of my billion i'm don't i'm giving it away what if i get what if i gave these people three million dollars right now they're like okay more out of your fucking pocket what are you talking about it was just funny to see a billionaire one of them finally read the room and was like yeah i'm gonna do it and i'm telling you i give you, I promise you, if you use that money to solve world hunger or any global crisis, I swear to God, you will be able to put as much dumb shit in space. You can build any mecca. I promise you, we won't say anything. I've been saying this every time I've been on the pod. You don't even got to
Starting point is 00:30:41 credit me. Just solve one global crisis. And I promise you, people ain't't gonna be pressed about you doing whatever the fuck you want with the rest of your billions it's easy i'm telling you i got the i got the secret the bar is so low for the fucking billion yeah yeah just one oh if you did one global crisis i promise you no one's even gonna because because the bar is in hell you would be basically j. And you could. But yeah, Nanny, check that out. It's on Prime Video. I really like it. I think people, it's a very weird kind of heady, slow-moving thing that I think usually is reserved for a lot of white stories. And I think because people are expecting something more and they're expecting it to say something more.
Starting point is 00:31:27 Because, you know, I think we're in this we're still in this black renaissance of cinema. But I think we're trying to break out of that that that get out effect where I think people really liked that. It was this great black story that kind of spoke to racism in a very specific, very understandable way. And so whenever you have these kind of prestige Black movies, you have viewers waiting for that. And if they don't get it, they're like, well, what was this about? And it's like, oh, sometimes we can just exist. Right, right, right. Right, right, right.
Starting point is 00:32:10 And this movie does tackle those things, but it tackles it on a more subtle microaggression way that I think will fly over some people's heads. Just based on what some people have said coming out of Sundance. I'm like, oh, you just didn't see it. Because now we know the big race. We know the don't say the hard art. We know the don't be prejudiced aspect of it. So now we're trying to get y'all to understand the levels. And now y'all are missing that because y'all not looking for that. That was level one doing that.
Starting point is 00:32:30 You're ready for level two now? Yeah. Yeah. I don't know. Seem kind of that writer seemed real angry or something. You're like, oh, here they go. I know I'm coming in hot from over under. We ain't even got to the news stories yet
Starting point is 00:32:45 and i'm just already just throwing blows but you know some some yeah some good stuff to watch yeah oh yeah nanny sounds good all right let's get into the news pete budaj miles i think you referenced this last week in our first episode back but you know secretary of transportation nobody's looking at him where it turns out so if you only watch mainstream news it'll look like only fox news is looking at him he's serious but basically investigative journalist took a look at like dug into some communications did some foia in and up to 1 million travelers were stranded by southwest airlines over the holiday season this investigative journalist uncovered documents show that showed that democratic state officials and congressional
Starting point is 00:33:38 lawmakers had repeatedly begged budaj to toughen rules to deter airlines from mistreating their customers essentially which you know as southwest stranded all those people and didn't was just like yeah sorry i mean you're fucked what do you want us to do they're like your bags are in la somewhere just go down just look for them oh y'all got the same bag? Whoops. Yeah. It is interesting because during that time, if you watch CNN or MSNBC or whatever, they're like, oh, gridlock. What's going on? It's Southwest. Ugh. And that was sort of like the depth of the analysis was just like, huh, what are you going to do, folks?
Starting point is 00:34:20 Seems like a real bummer out there without actually telling people like who could do something about this this seems all bad right it seems like they're just doing whatever they want what where are the regulations where are the regulators as booty judge is the only he's the sole airline regulator under federal law but they they wouldn't they didn't cover that on any of the mainstream news also southwest airlines experienced a similar meltdown a year ago, and this latest meltdown was made possible, or actually, they interviewed this economist, William McGee, who said Southwest was inevitable
Starting point is 00:34:57 after Buttigieg failed to punish awful behavior all year. So he's not acting to protect consumers to protect the american people which is like you know that shit happens you know shit gets missed people lose focus or like not good at their jobs but the the thing that's truly kind of outrageous about this is that nobody like as this investigative journalism was uncovering this and reporting it in jacobin though it was only being covered by fox news the new york post newsmax house republicans donald trump jr was like retweeting it so you would like i was under the assumption okay so this is probably a bullshit story until you see that the sourcing goes back to just good old school's record, pretending critics were ignoring the simple reality that his department does not have direct control over airlines. That was that was I think that was the independent wrote that the independent wrote that shit.
Starting point is 00:36:19 Oh, yeah. I remember literally the airline regulator. The independent wrote that the Hill wrote that criticism of Buttigieg is just petty Bernie Sanders bros who are mad at him from the primaries. They're like, oh, this is just leftist bullshit. They're just mad because he beat Sanders in the primaries. First of all, Sanders did better than him in the primaries, just mad because he beat Sanders in the prime. First of all, Sanders did better than him in the primaries,
Starting point is 00:36:46 I think, but besides the point, like the, it's just, it's such a, like our team versus their team environment is really fucking shit up right now. Like it's,
Starting point is 00:36:59 and it gives Fox the ability, like it gives them the ability to point to ways that the mainstream media and the Democratic Party are lying. And like, just like there are actual conspiracies happening that they get to point to and then be like, and therefore also vaccines are bad right right right what else aren't they telling you if pete budaj who's from mckinsey and they're the ones who even told airlines to be able to get become more profitable through extra fees to passengers and now he works at the department of transportation then what's really going on it's like yeah he's a soldier in capitalism's invisible arm you know he was probably a cia op or cia connected at some point He worked for McKinsey, which is basically like the financial wing of the CIA and fucking, yeah,
Starting point is 00:37:48 he's just working on behalf of massive corporations against the best interests of American people. And it's like, you, you need a media that is willing to point that out. That is not getting caught lying about that shit if we're gonna get through these next 10 years
Starting point is 00:38:10 where people actually have to like change their lifestyles in order to prevent the end of the world you know like yeah we need a better system than this where it's just like our team versus their team and we have to protect the blue
Starting point is 00:38:25 guy who might run for president in four years yeah yeah i mean that's that's kind of what i felt you know if you haven't been uh in tuned in with my twitter i did uh last year accidentally delete all of my tweets but there was a tweet i had uh rest in peace that i was um i was like we need to move past like the the this like political tribalism and be more agnostic and really start to take stuff in on a case-by-case basis because yeah it is you know ever since someone kind of like pointed out to look out for political theater, it really has like turned on my spidey senses because Pete Buttigieg is the best at that. You know, he you know, he was the quickest to make sure all the cameras were there when he was yelling about Uvalde, which is, you know, which was warranted. But, you know, there's the part where you agree with him
Starting point is 00:39:25 and you're like yeah and then there's the part where you're like well how how much is this optics and how much is this like actual anger because pete budaj you know has a history of being the the guy who was like very visibly outraged and in the same way he did it with Southwest. And now you're kind of seeing it in a very explosive way where he was like, you know, very ramped up and talking about how he's looking in the Southwest and how angry. And now we have receipts that is like, but where were you? Yeah. With the hot dog suit. You're, you're the hot dog suit guy. We're all trying to find the guy who did this. And it was like,
Starting point is 00:40:04 it was you. And it was like, it was you. And it's because you were told about this and you just kind of didn't do anything. Yeah. Or that your reflexes are like, I don't rock the profit boat. Okay. That's the one thing I know from coming up. You don't rock the profit boat. If anything, you tell them how to make the profit boat bigger, but don't rock the profit boat.
Starting point is 00:40:24 That's not what we do. And to your point about the tribalism, like people who get so caught up in the blue, no matter who or whatever, you're basically seeding your ability to define your own values by having to put them through this lens of what does the big D Democrat party think of a given issue? And whatever that is, that's what I think, because that's usually how, I mean, that's how I was radicalized slowly from like a teenager on just to hear, you know, from my parents, well, what do you, what do you think should work? Well, this, okay. What party is doing that? Well, neither of them. Okay. So you disagree there, but not rather than like, should I conform my desire to have like a more efficient quote unquote justice system or from are actually tackling the problem of the carceral state? Like if that's a value to me, I'm not going to budge from that because that's what that's the world I want to see.
Starting point is 00:41:14 So if I just go, oh, yeah, well, the blue guy is not really feeling that. And I'm like, OK, fine. As long as he's blue, I can abandon this thing that I have, this value that I hold. like, okay, fine. As long as he's blue, I can abandon this thing that I have, this value that I hold. That's when shit gets slippery and you end up like in a situation like this, probably having a feeling of going, well, you know what? It's really fucked up that an airline can completely go, you know, be completely backwards as a business, strand all these people, not give them refunds during like the holiday season where people's travel time is very precious. And you know what? I'm not going to get mad about it because I'm team blue. refunds during like the holiday season where people's travel time is very precious and you know what i'm not gonna get mad about it because i'm team blue and even though that's on us i'm not
Starting point is 00:41:50 really here to get mad at the team because that's more important to me than like my stated values or what i believe as a person and i think that's really hard because the other part of it is like you're saying jack you're not educating people like on how shit works like just a basic civics lesson like if you have people rampantly being like i saw in that same independent article they were like showing like and even democrats are saying like you know it's not his fault where someone's like one of these democratic influencers were like i mean pete buddha judge isn't the ceo of like the storm what do they expect him to do yeah yeah it's all yeah it's teaching them not just to like not educate and not but it's teaching them to ignore and to like you know do these mental gymnastics at a time where like it's really dangerous for we're supposed to be like learning how to learn some very difficult truths
Starting point is 00:42:47 like right right now the world is in a very you know phasing a next 10 20 years where we're going to the math mass extinction yeah we're facing the six mass extinction we're going to need to get through to people and we're teaching them to like do this sort of mental gymnastics just to get on board with the right team because we think that they're the better of two bad alternatives. Bible. And in fact, this is like very dangerous because you're teaching them how to ignore, you're teaching them how to like, you know, swallow these lies and like, you know, argue on behalf of them. He's not the CEO of the storm and it gives fascism ground to stand on. And fascism is the thing in the United States that keeps coming. The left gets ignored, gets dismissed. gets ignored, gets dismissed. The, you know, body politic is allergic to leftism.
Starting point is 00:43:49 Fascism keeps coming in this country and it's going to keep coming. And that's, we're in a really dangerous position if we don't have any mainstream media that actually is willing to tell the truth about this shit. Yeah, because everyone's keeping score. Yeah. Yeah. And I mean, it even kind of leads into this next story
Starting point is 00:44:06 about like just like because this is the kind of this is the kind of world that like people like tucker carlson need where people have completely given up on the ability of government to do anything because that's truly again how like you're saying that makes you more open to more extreme solutions because it'll be like, we already tried this government, like, Democratic shit. What's this other guy saying? Oh, oh, yeah, I like his fuck-em-up attitude. This might work. And Fox is in the, they're in a really interesting, like, situation again as the speaker fight keeps going.
Starting point is 00:44:39 Like, I don't know if Kevin McCarthy has taken, like, L's for like a vote for speaker as it stands. I believe he is not yet the speaker or at least as of this recording. And we've played like last week, he played a clip on how like Hannity was getting tired of Lauren Boebert and talking about like her obstructionism, as he was saying. He's like, why don't you pack it in? And the other never Kevin's like, what the fuck? Like what? We look stupid out here. And then Brian Kilmeade even called one of his fellow insurrectionists a literal insurrectionist and was like oh sorry i didn't mean to use that word yeah and like oh sorry laura ingram laura ingram even told matt gates to get on with it and that he was playing with fire by messing around with this but one person on this
Starting point is 00:45:25 news channel on fashion or fox news uh isn't towing the line like the rest and that's tucker carlson he's steadily been marching to his own beat or maybe the kremlins of like this is a good thing that the government can't operate actually this is democracy in action yeah and he's also decided to give the holdouts like some additional notes on concessions they should be extracting from Kevin McCarthy. Like, you know, make the house completely like basically say you should get McCarthy to start a probe into the FBI and have all the footage from January 6th released because this is like part of his conspiratorial thinking about it with like Antifa and all, you know, he just, he feels like this, this will help. And then even accused
Starting point is 00:46:04 McCarthy, he was like, he's like, are you help and then even accused mccarthy he was like he's like are you really going to trust a guy who wears like a ukraine pin wait why like what well what do you think why because i mean what reason i mean he's clearly sounds an awful lot like an attempt to begin to erode the financial backing of ukraine as they're fighting russia is that like just shorthand at this point on his show like his audience all is like ukraine well we all know they're the bad yeah i mean if you listen to him enough he he's not he's not like full-throated being like we got it back ukraine he's like well i don't know should we be we got a lot of problems here to be like over there yeah
Starting point is 00:46:42 and then like the other part of the box is like hey man we're with the military industrial complex what the fuck you talking about bro we need to get this money flown shut the fuck up but again this is part of his you know clearly he wants to keep continue to erode the faith or whatever that is and especially if the government's not operating that is huge for people like tucker carlson for people like steve bannon they want people to look at the government's not operating that is huge for people like tucker carlson for people like steve bannon they want people to look at the government as being a total joke like that that's the that's what that's step one of being able to really blow shit out because the second everyone's like no this shit's a joke it's all bullshit whatever then you're pretty pretty much anything's on the
Starting point is 00:47:22 table at that point right or at least it won't sound inappropriate so you know it's just like an odd place because on one hand fox and gop the gop they've both chosen like this very easy path of just feeding their audience increasingly extremist viewpoints to like bolster support but in that process they've also had to be somewhat tethered to reality which is also affecting their audience like when they called arizona for biden in 2020 that was like a mortal sin right those people who are also fed the diet of misinformation like what do you mean that's that's happening or you know trying to half pretend that they aren't spewing election denial fantasies to being you know avoid being sued into oblivion so it's a lot of like simultaneous reaping of the sowing in like it's weird ways and like kevin mccarthy if he if he ends up being speaker he's gonna be so weakened because he's
Starting point is 00:48:12 giving like the entire the ability of the speaker's position to sort of dictate the schedule of legislation and what gets voted on etc and you know like i don't know i don't know what good it does anybody at that point but yeah we will see well how this but these are the people who are winning right like fox news is the side that is winning if they are making it so that the mainstream media can't tell the truth about a story when the democratic side fucks up like because they know that fox is you know going to be twisting things then they've they've won they've redefined the game to to their ends and you know it as bad as weird and like you know untenable as their position seems it does seem like they still determine the rules of war when it comes to how stories are told in in the current media landscape in a way that,
Starting point is 00:49:07 you know, even fairly recently, what probably wasn't the case. Well, I guess my one question is this then, because what it really looks like is the, there's been this internal kind of civil war with the right, right? Where you had your like, what we'll call classic conservatives kind of battling out with the far right and you and that's kind of the holdouts here so do we think this is a good thing that it seems like to be this small community of whack jobs that are holding out or do we look at this as uh they are regaining power because their figurehead essentially was like, you know, Trump, who was, you know, there. But even though there's a little bit of Trump in all of that party, I think you have the side of the people who are like, we're going to outright say, you know, wild shit. Like like we like we were saying the Tucker, the carlson's of it and the matt gates of
Starting point is 00:50:05 it all which i'm like how about you worry about your case my boy but uh and then you have you know the people who are trying to play ball and parlay and and try and pretend like they have some civility well it's like they have they're in a these like holdouts they're in a rough spot like part of them's like yeah we did that hold that kevin mccarthy oh yeah you thought you were the speaker you moved in a little too quick but then on the other side right you have 200 republicans who are like the fuck is what the fuck are they doing yeah the fuck are y'all doing we need to fucking move along with this shit mccarthy already promised me spots and shit that i need i want to get this shit going i already promised me spots and shit that I need. I want to get this shit going. I already made my deal with him. Cut your fucking deal with him and let's
Starting point is 00:50:48 go. But then on the other side of it, you also have people in that 200 of the establishment Democrats that are behind McCarthy. They're also telling McCarthy, don't be cutting deals with them. Right. Don't don't give them a gavel position like as the chair of a committee or subcommittee. Are you fucking dumb? I've been in this shit for 50 fucking years 40 years or whatever and you're gonna let this fucking racist who sells etsy like kkk fucking coffee mugs and shit like you're gonna let that person run a committee i've put a lot of time into this so they're up against it and really all it's gonna do it's just gonna it's only gonna further create more rot within the party because everyone is pissed at each other right now yeah and then on top of it you have some republicans
Starting point is 00:51:30 like fuck it man just cut a deal with the democrats then like fucking leave them behind at least we can figure something out and then you have a group of republicans like i will fuck i will never fucking vote for anything that gives power to the Democrats, even in a shared situation. So it's a lose-lose situation. I don't think it necessarily bolsters their power. They're just obstructing. And from that position, it's only creating more resentment to them specifically as a group. Now, what that means for their constituents, who probably love it because they probably rode in on a horse of like, get McCarthy out of here and all these rhinos. I mean, again, but this is what happens when they they let the fucking monsters in. like give concessions to the extremist wing the extremist holdouts than there is that like there's some sort of coalition like government you know so yeah and i think a lot of people like don't
Starting point is 00:52:33 a lot of people say it's impossible but you never know yeah i mean because the other thing is like soon you might see people try to spin it as how come the democrats won't work with them right yeah yeah you know it's like what the fuck they're like nearly antithetical on most things like uh like you know policy wise but i don't know that's why it's very very uh it's gonna be it's gonna be like a strained fight for the speaker's uh position and then at the end of it i'm not sure we'll see how efficiently or inefficiently it runs. All right. Let's take a quick break. We'll come back. We'll talk Netflix. When you think of Mexican culture, you think of avocado, mariachi,
Starting point is 00:53:20 delicious cuisine, and of course, lucha libre.
Starting point is 00:53:45 And I'm your host, Santos Escobar, the emperor of Lucha Libre and a WWE superstar. Santos! Santos! As the U.S. elections approach,
Starting point is 00:54:23 it can feel like we're angrier and more divided than ever.
Starting point is 00:54:50 We'll see that our fellow humans, even those we disagree with, are more generous than we assume. My assumption, my feeling, my hunch is that a lot of us are actually looking for a way to disagree and still be in a relationship with each other. All that on the Happiness Lab. Listen on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you listen to podcasts.
Starting point is 00:55:17 I'm Renee Stubbs, and I'm obsessed with sports, especially tennis. On the Renee Stubbs Tennis Podcast, I get the chance to do what I love, talk about how tennis and other women's sports are growing and changing and what the future holds. I think I just genuinely loved what I did. I love this waking up, putting on my sports gear. I still believe it was so rewarding. Maybe you can relate to it as well. As a woman, I think it's a very powerful feeling to have a job at which you're able to see improvements in real time. On the show, we dissect everything going on in the game straight from the biggest players in the world. Plus, serve up recaps of all the matches and headlines in the game, including a rundown of the U.S. Open every Monday.
Starting point is 00:56:06 Listen to the Renee Stubbs Tennis Podcast every Monday on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Presented by Capital One, founding partner of iHeart Women's Sports. And we're back. We're back and so netflix has been canceling they they canceled over 15 shows in 2022 over i yeah i think it ended up closer to like 19 by the end of the year so they canceled a show from the creators of dark did y'all ever watch Dark? That German sci-fi Lost type shit?
Starting point is 00:56:49 I heard people raving about it, but I did not watch it. Didn't you watch it, Jack? I watched the first season of it. I remember, yeah. It's solid. It is solid. It recaptures some of what you got from watching Lost, that first season. Okay.
Starting point is 00:57:05 It's even more self-contained so i don't know i i i recommend it even though i didn't complete the entire first season that the one thing i would say is do not do the like english dub just do just fucking suck it up and read the sub oh yeah i i typically i i if it if they have subs then i'm running um subs i made it yeah this was the first time for some reason i think it defaulted to like the dub and so i just watched like three episodes with the dub and i was like man this is terrible i don't know what the fuck yeah they're all bad actors and i was like oh no it's just yeah and then you turn the subtitles talking about. Yeah, they're all bad actors. And I was like, oh, no, it's just, yeah. And then you turn the subtitles on, and you're like, oh, they're all great actors.
Starting point is 00:57:50 Big change. But anyways, Dark is cool. They developed and released a new show from the creator of Dark. And its first week that it dropped back in November, it was called 1899. It hit the number two slot on the Netflix top 10 behind only The Crown, stayed on the top 10 for weeks.
Starting point is 00:58:08 And then like a couple weeks later, it just got canceled and everyone was confused. And this has happened with a couple other shows this year where it's not, you know, Netflix will drop stuff and just bury it. And it will like will just like not it. And it will like, we'll just like not exist and it's fucked up. But there's been some shows where they like, there's a teen vampire drama called first kill that was all over their top 10 and they canceled it. And so the secret behind this is something called completion rate that they value over everything else.
Starting point is 00:58:46 And that is what, what you would think it is like what percentage of people who start a show actually finish it and so got it yeah so the these shows that get in their top 10 because they've got a lot of people like starting them and watching the first couple episodes they have low completion rates which suggests to netflix well then nobody's going to you know tune in for 1899 2 or you know season 2 so that they should do billboard charts like that yeah i mean because i feel like you know like when people when drake puts out like a 46 song album and like it's like, yeah, and they'll just play back to back. And then they're at the top of the charts because like listen time, like how many people are even just like bailing after like halfway through the third track or something? Yeah. But I just feel like it's interesting to see that at least for them, they know that is actually the most valuable thing in terms of making content is like, well, I don't care if it's number one. Like people have to
Starting point is 00:59:45 watch it to justify the cost right what's you guys feelings about that because like part of me is like with music in particular part of me is like yeah just release all the songs i don't i don't give a shit like don't be precious because like you know there have been some great albums that like bob dylan has a couple albums where like he's just cut songs that were great but that he just like felt didn't fit the vibe of the album and like they don't come out for like 30 years or whatever so like this new model of just like putting all the songs out and letting people sort of edit together their own version of the album i don't hate but it's also like i do appreciate a flawless album you know but yeah what's built in is the cynicism of making as much money as
Starting point is 01:00:32 yeah for sure that's that's why i don't like it because i'm like because that's also songs are so short too like it's like well you just keep looping that or you know a lot of it is also being affected by how people consume music on tiktok so in a way like everything's evolving so do whatever you do like put out a fucking 300 track album because my favorite song of the year is like a minute and a half long yo but but that's what they're saying they're also saying that this metric of completion rate, like that's skewed in favor of shorter, more easily digestible shows that you're just, you know,
Starting point is 01:01:12 like if your show's like got 15 minute episodes or it's like Emily in Paris and it's just something you're like thrown on the background, it's going to have a higher completion rate like if it's just not challenging so i don't know right it does it does seem to be anything that's metrics driven around art is yeah a little problematic well look what it did to video look what it did to digital video you know i mean it used to be like yeah man you could upload videos on the internet and they're like that shit can't be more than 53 seconds asshole
Starting point is 01:01:45 and they were so wrong they still say that shit and like and then they're like it's all about watch time it's all about watch time now who gives a fuck it's all about it's not about watch time it says some people can make content that people will watch longer than others that's what it is it's not by virtue of the lengths of time. But yeah, I think that this is always when, you know, as Quincy Jones would say, this one, God leaves the room. That's right. Metrics. And when money comes into the conversation, when metrics come into the conversation, that's when God leaves the room. God leaves the room, baby. Ain't no God in there. And I was a big metrics guy when I was, you know, running cracked. I definitely
Starting point is 01:02:24 believed in metrics because our parent company was like a big metrics company. So I kind of had to. But yeah, I think anyone who is making digital content in that had to be. It was all about KPIs and all that shit. Yeah. But I don't know. Like, are there any shows that you guys have like felt got gone too soon in the digital world that you want to see like given another or not in the digital like on streaming that you want to see given another
Starting point is 01:02:50 chance i feel like we get plenty of digital content i was just watching gordita chronicles on hbo max i thought that shit was cool yeah and that shit just there's a ton of i mean so much it's hard honestly i'm kind of desensitized because the rhythm of content coming out is so intense they're like oh right be like season three is out i'm like i forgot about season two of that other show right here's the thing for and this is what i truly feel about when these quote-unquote metrics because you know i've seen the metrics uh for the digital stuff we've worked on and we know it's real. I would love to see Netflix actually post these metrics because it really feels like more of a cop out than anything.
Starting point is 01:03:32 Because you can't tell me the platform that created people binging almost three to five hours of content is now like, oh, we like the easily digestible stuff. You can't tell me these shows that are blowing up that are these hour longs, the Witcher going nuts. You know, it's like, I feel like there's cop-outs and I feel like what it is when it always comes to Hollywood, things like this is money because I think, you know, TV is so elusive when it's like on the traditional networks because we're just kind of like okay we hope it did good but we're going off of nielsen's and all this stuff but like when netflix shows are bopping you know you got people globally on twitter you got trending and all that and then when you come back to the bargaining table with that type of information you're gonna get your
Starting point is 01:04:22 coins so you know it doesn't it doesn't you, and it's always been this, like on this third season, nothing gets past the third season, which, you know, traditionally inside baseball is usually when contracts get renegotiated. Yeah. So I would, I would personally love to see the, the, the metrics that, that are being upheld and, and, and this not just being you absconding and waiting out to see as we go into a year, you know. I mean, both between SAG, the WGA, and I'm sure the DGA, we're starting to come for streaming because streaming is this weird thing where, you know, your show goes on there. You don't get the same as it royals, you know, when when I was doing a show before they played it once again every that same night.
Starting point is 01:05:12 So they would play when it aired and it usually aired at midnight. I'll let you guess which show that was and then it would air again. And so they'd have to pay us every time it aired and it was a daily show and it was like a nice little extra bump but you know if it's on streaming you people can watch that 50 million times and we're really not gonna see any type of payment for that so now we're getting to this point where like you know wga sag actors were starting to be like where's my coins and now we're getting to this era where they're trying to be like well we're we're not going to let shows run that long. We're not going to give, we're already cutting down the season orders. You know, like I'm rewatching Lost. The first season is 22 episodes. You don't get a 22 episode first season anymore. You definitely don't get it on streaming. Streaming, you're lucky if you get a 10 episode it's 8 to 10 episodes so it's really just kind of uh the dance around paying the people that
Starting point is 01:06:09 need to be paid while y'all rake in billions you know right you know follow the money as they say the problem is like they would be like the thing is uh that show was actually too popping so they actually wanted like appropriate money to keep the show going and we don't really do that we like to take big bets on three seasons that was like it's funny i just saw a clip of snoop dog talking about i don't know if you remember on mtv he did that show doggy fizzle televizzle that like was like a comedy show that's new yeah and it was funny there was like a segment called black ass where it was just based on like black people can't do that jackass shit or or it's like the stakes are way different coming up to a cop and trying to fuck with them
Starting point is 01:06:49 and i remember it was a really funny show it was only around for one season and what happened was he said he said oh yeah like it was popping mtv loved it they come back they said hey man we we already got everybody on board for season two like we got all your like the hair people the camera people they're all locked in the writers like they're good with this new deal or whatever and then snoop was like yeah but i'm gonna need more money and they're like oh the thing is you know you do we got you on a two-season contract and he said yeah i don't care that first season was is popping so we're not if we're not gonna have the same deals like i don't he was basically like i don't care what i signed and and they said okay well you know we can't really do anything because you signed the papers
Starting point is 01:07:28 they told him the season two shooting date was like you know january 10th january 10th shows up he doesn't show up yeah and he said 9 a.m i'm not there 10 a.m i'm not there 2 p.m i'm not there 4 p.m i'm not there and finally they just asked what's going on i said i'm not fucking doing it because he was just he was so about his coins that and also i think he was like i don't even know traditional business deals but fuck this but it's true yeah yeah mtv not always the greatest two talent that they work with they they were paying people like it was digital content before digital content was a thing. I will say, you know, yeah, the parent company, which I think technically doesn't exist anymore. So I feel like that parent company, yeah, Viacom, because I think now it's within Paramount, right? CBS, yeah. Which, you know, CBS, Paramount, which I do love and everything.
Starting point is 01:08:24 But Viacom, which is, of course, very different and not the same thing. Yeah. Truly has a history. And I'll leave just being like you have to get it going with them. And I think it's mostly to when you think about the history of television. if you, some people know that some don't, but you know, reality TV came from the big writer's strike that happened. That's really when it blew up. And I think MTV and Viacom, a lot of their shows were able to make the most out of it. Uh, you know, you had team mom, you got the challenge, you got real world. So you were able to keep cooking. And I think the, so they're used to being like, well, you know, the, anything scripted is not our bottom line, you know, anything, you know, like, like we can like we can move with you so you can get what we offer or we'll just make another thing like that. And I think that's kind of why they've had the history. But, you know.
Starting point is 01:09:17 Yeah. Yeah. What happened to Spider Games MTV2? I was watching that shit. Took away that drama show about a fledgling gaming company that was like the worst soap opera i'd ever seen i don't know what look but when you when you look back at like how mtv came together that shit was it wasn't even like duct tape it was it was scotch tape like they they were just like throwing so like music videos were a thing that people were doing in london in like the
Starting point is 01:09:46 prague rock like new wave scene and they just were like yeah these are free let's just put them on and for like three years that's all they had and then they just slowly like built it up with no budget and just it's wild so yeah that that shit came together from very bargain basement type culture. That's how you do it. Yeah. And then with Rob Dyrdek, pretty much flipped the script on him. Well, Ify, such a pleasure having you, as always. Where can people find you, follow you, all that good stuff?
Starting point is 01:10:20 Oh, man. Ify Wadiwe on Twitter and Instagram. If you don't know how that spelled just look at the episode but also uh if d's on twitch watch season two of grand crew it's coming to you watch uh twisted metal is coming to peacock and uh you know watch anything else i tell you to on those social media sites because i'm cooking on stuff all the time and I'm real excited to be back and, you know, carve myself back on Mount Zeitmark. It's back.
Starting point is 01:10:49 I'm free. Your image was getting dull. You know what I mean? I know. It was getting dull. I know because, you know, I popped in today and then I was also going to come a little later. And I said, Anna, go ahead and keep that there. I'm coming back.
Starting point is 01:11:02 I'm thinking I'm back. And hopefully with better internet. But y'all won't know this because it's edited really well but just know this was a journey a bit there's like the phrase i'm thinking i'm back yeah i'm thinking i'm back for reals though and is there a tweet or some of the work of social media you've been oh yes i do I added it to the doc so I wouldn't forget. But it had me laughing. And it's great. Here it is. It is a video of Savannah recording LeBron James trying to play Madden.
Starting point is 01:11:35 And LeBron is kind of like, well, we did this, this, this, this. And the tweet goes, my nigga a billionaire and still got to justify being on the game. He just like us for real and and uh yeah i still come back to this tweet and laugh because i'm like yep you truly relatable energy what's your future miles miles it really is being a dad welcome uh where can people find you miles and what's the tweet you've been enjoying uh find me on twitter and instagram at miles of gray also find us on our basketball podcast miles and jack got mad boosties uh an nba podcast and also if you like 90 day fiance
Starting point is 01:12:18 and watching that trash dump unravel before our eyes check me out on 420 day fiance some tweets i like first one is from uh kana jam at kana jam c-o-n-a-j-a-m it said no better feeling than when you finish a good book and can finally eat the bookmark i had that one too um and then the other one i like was just this tweet this prompt from at jewel knight jess uh who tweeted the last TV show you watched is now getting a crossover with the last video game you played. What is the unholy abomination that has just been created? And for me, that is the vow. FIFA 23. And I don't know what the fuck that means.
Starting point is 01:13:00 I could easily see that. Yeah. I mean, yeah, they were already playing volleyball and shit, so. Yeah. Yeah, he just, he moves on. He moves up a little bit from amateur volleyball
Starting point is 01:13:11 to the World Cup. To FIFA. They're already, they're already used to swallowing the lies, you know? Let's see, some tweets I've been enjoying.
Starting point is 01:13:21 Emma Friend tweeted, all these men vying for speaker and none running to be listener. Makes you think. That did make me think. And Philip Mattarisi tweeted, the name's Bond. Name's
Starting point is 01:13:36 Bond. You can find us on Twitter at Daily Zeitgeist. We're at The Daily Zeitgeist on Instagram. Starting point is 01:13:56 Miles, what song do you think people might enjoy? Oh, you might enjoy this for all my geriatric millennials who appreciate the sounds of the boom bap golden era of hip-hop from new york just this west side gun track from i think actually two years ago but i love this piano sample that's in it it's oh my god it's so dope it's this ramsey lewis piano sample and it's like it's a great loop because it doesn't really have like a distinct beat but the producer finds a way to make it boom-bap-able, so this is West Side Gun with Why I Do Em Like That.
Starting point is 01:14:31 Heavily boom-bap-able. Oh, yeah. All right. Well, we will link off to that in the footnotes. The Daily Zeitgeist is a production of iHeartRadio.
