Hi, I'm Akilah Hughes, and I'm so excited about my new podcast, Rebel Spirit, where I head back to my hometown in Kentucky and try to convince my high school to change their racist mascot, the Rebels, into something everyone in the South loves, the Biscuits. I was a lady rebel. Like, what does that even mean? It's right here in black and white and prints. They lie. It's bigger than a flag or mascot. Listen to Rebel Spirit on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever
Starting point is 00:02:05 you get your podcasts. Hello, the internet, and welcome to this episode of Miller's Light. This is a production of iHeartRadio. This is a podcast where we take a deep dive into America's shared consciousness. This is the trending one that we do Thursday afternoon. Is that right? I'm Jack O'Brien. That's your producer, Ana Hosnier. And that is Caitlin Durante. Hey.
Starting point is 00:02:32 Hey. Hey. What's up? You're talking as if you're pointing at us. Sorry. Miller Zeit, the champagne of the podcast. No, that's Miller High Life. That's Miller High Zeit.
Starting point is 00:02:42 High Zeit, yeah. Yeah. High Zeit. How are you guys? I'm good. That's Miller Heiseif. Heiseif, yeah. Heiseif. How are you guys? I'm good. I feel like shit. How are you? You don't. You're not good.
Starting point is 00:02:51 I know. I'm coughing. Sorry to hear that. Let's just cancel tomorrow. Wow, Jack. Great idea. What? Huh?
Starting point is 00:02:59 No way, man. Never a day off. Yeah, now we know. I said that like it was a piece of folksy wisdom and it's just torture yeah me being mean bad boss bad person uh let's talk about tulsi gabbert actual disney villain uh she voted present during trump's impeachment and she can go fuck herself any thoughts yeah AOC specifically called her out
Starting point is 00:03:32 she's an operative she's a plant from the Republican Party she's just like a fern or like a shrub exactly she is a fucking shrub ooh shit let's have that Like a shrub? Yeah, exactly. She is a fucking shrub. Ooh, shit. Let's have that.
Starting point is 00:03:48 Let's introduce that into the zeitgeist. Yeah. Shrubby Gabbard. I really, I don't know. If you've ever listened to my podcast, Ethnically Ambiguous, I really, really dislike Tulsi Gabbard because she, for someone who, oh God, I fear to say any further from my mentions oh yeah people got mad at me from the Tulsi heads they're they're out here or maybe they're
Starting point is 00:04:14 Russian bots yeah maybe but I also um I've for someone who continuously talks about how we need to deal with foreign relations in the middle east um she also believes that they're all kind of like terrorists and that i i just i really struggle with her politics because she presents herself one way but then is technically a war hawk yeah weird war hawk she is she wants to destroy like doesn't she have really problematic views about like lgbtq stuff too yeah and her whole thing with bashar al-assad it's like she goes back and forth on that being like i never said i support him and then goes like well you need a strong leader like this and it's like you can't keep doing this. You should never, ever try and uphold a person like that in any sense. I haven't studied her specific positions, so don't at me.
Starting point is 00:05:13 But I do think she is probably sent here by Satan and very evil. You can hear about them on Worst Year Ever, which is a show on this very network. They did do the research and she's bad. Let's talk about I guess there's a Democratic debate tonight in Los Angeles.
Starting point is 00:05:36 I'm going to skip Star Wars to see it. I know. I know you better than that. It's at Loyola Marymount University, which is right by the airport. They're really trying to fuck up traffic for everybody. Oh, yeah, that's going to ruin everything for people traveling for the holidays. What a bad choice.
Starting point is 00:05:59 So LA traffic, nothing else matters. Am I right? Yeah, so tonight it's gonna be You got your Andrew Yang You got your Bernie Sanders You got your Who else? You got your Amy Klobuchar
Starting point is 00:06:16 Alright so it's Buttigieg It's Warren, it's Biden Sanders, Klobuchar, Tom Steyer Why the fuck is Tom Steyer there? Who? Who? Yeah, I don't know. Who? Hey.
Starting point is 00:06:28 And even Bloomberg's not even going to be there. I mean, it's not a party without some Bloomberg. Without a rich white guy. Yeah. I guess Steyer's the only billionaire. Hmm. So that's seven. It'll be the smallest number, which
Starting point is 00:06:46 I think is good. Alright, that's manageable. Yeah, that seems manageable. I hope people take dead aim at Pete Buttigieg and you know, take him down a notch. I want everyone to watch the movie, or not the movie, the TV
Starting point is 00:07:01 show The Politician and remember that is who pete budaj is right budaj i never budaj egg jeg okay also that thread where his like childhood friend is or i don't know childhood acquaintance is roasting him to death oh no i haven't seen that what do they say about someone who grew up with pete budaj who who hates him just hates him goes like he was a fucking asshole his whole life like he was always a dick he's been trying to become president since like eight years old he told my mom at like eight that she needs like a better resume or something like that like really
Starting point is 00:07:34 like weird shit and then that he's basically everything he's done is work towards being the president like every step is calculated and i think the show politician on netflix nails that really well uh and it's like a ryan murphy joint so you'd super stylize singing and it's not a ton of singing there is something because ben platt is the lead so of course he's gonna have to sing it's a musical musical, like The People vs. O.J. Simpson. Yeah, exactly. But it's just very stylized. It's well done. Gwyneth Paltrow's in it, which is whatever.
Starting point is 00:08:10 Ben Platt is Evan Hansen. Dear Evan Hansen? Dear Evan Hansen. I don't know any of these people. He's the male lead in Pitch Perfect. No, he's not. He's not the male lead in Pitch Perfect. Let me just Google it.
Starting point is 00:08:24 Oh, you're trying to make me lie to caitlin what what what is your game here what is the what's the bit here this has all been a front to try to convince caitlin that ben platt is the male lead in perfect and it worked because i am convinced i'm in wait what he's not? No, he's the nerdy sidekick. Ah, shit. He's like, I'm a great singer, but girls don't like me. Who's the male lead? Sean Astin. Aston.
Starting point is 00:08:54 Sean Astin of Rudy and Lord of the Rings fame? Maybe that's not his name. Sean something. This is a fucking mess. You're right. It's not Sean Astin. This episode, what the fuck is happening sean astin is the male really let's actually that's a great myth no it's skylar astin whatever skylar okay whatever whatever they're all the same movie but skylar astin sean astin
Starting point is 00:09:21 hard to tell the difference between the two. Oh, okay. Yes, I do recognize him from this movie. It's the Hobbit. Yeah, that's who it is. The Hobbit is the male lead. You're right. I'm wrong. Skylar. All right. The politician. That's what we were talking about.
Starting point is 00:09:38 I'm just saying that's who Pete Buttigieg is. I gotta watch it. I was just kidding. It's Buttigieg. Not Buttigieg. I think it's Buttigiepeg. Buttigieg. I gotta watch it. Watch it. I was just kidding. It's Buttigieg, not Buttigieg. I think it's Buttigiepeg. Buttigiepeg. Some people call it GIF. Some people call it a GIF.
Starting point is 00:09:54 If he changed his name to Buttigiepeg just to be like, he's like, hey, it's all about working towards the presidency. Hey, what's up, gang? Finger gun, finger gun, finger gun. I'm 100% that JPEG. Oh, my God. That was the worst thing I've ever seen, I think, possibly, is up there. He's a bad.
Starting point is 00:10:12 I don't like him. He's a bad. He's just a bad. Agreed. Kim Kardashian photoshopped Northwest into the family Christmas card because she was, quote, having a day, so she refused to be in the shoot that's wait so i've had this experience where your your kids are not cooperating for the pictures they're having a little they're having a little bit of a day and you just you just take some time
Starting point is 00:10:42 you don't you don don't Photoshop them in. Wow, that's a great Photoshop job, though. Do they do a really good Photoshop job? I guess maybe you do. I would have never known. I mean, they can afford the best Photoshoppers in all the land. I mean, but I also say don't have that many kids if you can't get them all in the photo. Wait, which one is Photoshopped in? That's my class.
Starting point is 00:11:04 North, this one, the older one. Oh, okay. The oldest one, if you will. That's just an amazing move that they were like, fuck it, we'll take the pictures and Photoshop her in. Wait, how many children? Whoa, okay, sorry. Four kids.
Starting point is 00:11:19 Four children. Too many. And also- Too many for a holiday card? I do not know what rock i've been living under but i had no idea that their kids were named northwest and then what were what are the other ones west okay so it's not all like cardinal directions no that should be north south east and west west missed opportunity East West would be.
Starting point is 00:11:45 Wait, what are their names? North, Saint. And the other two? Psalm and Chicago? Wait. Chicago, yeah, that's right. Did I make that up? Nope, you got them both.
Starting point is 00:11:58 This feels like an SNL sketch. This is really a mess, you guys. What's happening? Okay, so they photoshopped. Okay. mess you guys what's happening okay so they photoshopped okay it's there is something uncanny valley about this photo i can tell it's not quite right yeah but um i don't know what yeah she's not in the same lighting you can tell yeah i wouldn't have been able to tell. Well, I have a trained eye for this. Right. So I can tell.
Starting point is 00:12:29 Fortunately, I am on their mailing list for holiday cards, and I noticed right away. Congratulations. Yeah, actually, I have no problem with this. I don't know. I was trying to come up with a take where I was like, no, it's not right. Can't Photoshop kids into pictures.
Starting point is 00:12:44 I don't give a shit. I mean, yeah, if you've got the resources, why not? Yeah, if you've got the resources, it's not right. Can't Photoshop kids into picture. I don't give a shit. I mean, yeah, if you've got the resources, why not? Yeah, if you've got the resources, you have the Photoshop team. In fact, never spend time together as a family. Only take separate individual photos. Yes. Mash them up together and post. That is the take.
Starting point is 00:12:58 This is the take. That is the official position of the Daily Zeitgeist. Never see your family. Only Photoshop yourself into pictures with them yes uh and that just show them love via photoshopped pictures of the two of you that is how you raise a child that's what real love is james wiseman or weisman uh i think it's Wiseman, who is the consensus number one pick in the NBA draft this upcoming year. We were just deprived of the rest of his season by the NCAA because the NCAA fucking sucks. They're the worst.
Starting point is 00:13:50 But yeah, they love, it's a bunch of old white guys who love to, you know, disqualify young people of color. Why was he disqualified? Who, you know, some academic bureaucratic law bullshit. They just, like, there's so many rules. It's impossible. It's fucking so impossible to, like like keep up with all the rules and they are very punitive they love to get somebody in trouble let's talk about the real thing uh the real thing what the fuck does that mean? Let's talk about the thing that I'm most excited about right now.
Starting point is 00:14:29 That's Tenet. George Tenet, former CIA director. No, Tenet, T-E-N-E-T, new Christopher Nolan movie. And it's about time travel or time waves, time moving forward and backward in weird patterns. I personally believe this is, they are presenting Denzel Washington's son, John David Washington, as the new Denzel Washington. Yeah, or he's just a new actor.
Starting point is 00:15:04 Yeah, they're like, now he's taking over because his father is is retiring yeah well no he's not retiring but i don't know i think like john david washington's such a good actor that it's like now presenting in a christopher nolan movie the son of denzel washington john david washington he's the new top dog i love him i just love him i'm excited i don't really care about christopher nolan but i love john david washington you know excited for his i don't know this feels inception-y this one and i haven't seen the trailer yet but i don't know if you know this about me but uh time travel movies is my favorite subgenre. Is it? Yes. I am obsessed. I love time travel or
Starting point is 00:15:48 any sort of manipulation of time as a narrative premise. Also, I like that Robert Pattinson is like people are taking him seriously. Yeah, he's great. Good time. We all saw The Lighthouse.
Starting point is 00:16:03 We all saw The Lighthouse. We all saw The Lighthouse. We all dressed up as his character for Halloween from The Lighthouse, and we love him. Or was that just me? That Robert Pattinson's lighthouse keeper from The Lighthouse is the new Paddington. From Paddington 2. No. Why would you say that? Okay, I'm sorry. You're so wrong about that.
Starting point is 00:16:29 It was just a take I was trying to put out there. I knew it would be controversial. Do you realize Caitlin's in the room? I'm sorry. I can't believe it. I'm so sorry, Caitlin. I apologize for everyone. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:16:39 That was really inappropriate. Yeah, I'm excited to watch this. I tend to like Christopheropher nolan's films even though he doesn't have a good track record in terms of you know representing women women he loves fridging them women are obstacles yes uh but um i think you know i feel like this will be good. Christopher Nolan's women characters. Not the most well-written. Perhaps not. Not the most thoroughly imagined.
Starting point is 00:17:15 Remember that dumb one from fucking Inception who couldn't figure out if she was in a dream? That was everybody in Inception. That was a joke. Come on! I love Marion Cotillard. that was everybody in Inception that was a joke come on I love Marion Cotillard I thought she was a silly character in that
Starting point is 00:17:32 I literally just made that bit and you insulted me remember when she was like we're in a dream and he was like babe we're not in a dream remember how that movie was like a bunch of Californians like babe we're not in a dream. Duh. Remember how that movie was like a bunch of Californians? Like, babe, we're not in a dream.
Starting point is 00:17:47 We got to take the 101. Oh, God. What is happening? Did you know when you watch a trailer on mute, you have no idea what the movie's about? Yeah. Yes, thank you. Because I'm trying to figure it out. I've never noticed how that happens.
Starting point is 00:17:59 And I truly can't. Is that happening to you right now? Yes. It's just, I think it's just like another one of those things where he's going to be like, it's a metaphor for filmmaking. Remember when he did that with Inception? Oh, is that? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:18:09 That is what's cool about time travel and time manipulation movies is that's a thing that film makes possible. So I think that's a great choice for a favorite subgenre. Metaphors for filmmaking? I mean, I think the, I mean, we all, Happy Death Day, Happy Death Day to You, Live, Die, Repeat, a.k.a. Edge of Tomorrow. These are all, I love a good, you know,
Starting point is 00:18:38 day repeat thing. Like a good Groundhog's Day. Good Groundhog's Day. What was the Natasha Lyonne show? Oh, Russian Dolls. Russian Dolls. And then, yeah, just time traveling. Is it Russian Doll?
Starting point is 00:18:51 And I called it Russian Dolls. It's Russian Dolls. I mean, it's okay, Jack. Stop being so hard on yourself. Brad Pitt, Brad Pitts. I am turning into a person. I think yesterday was his birthday, Brad Pitts. Brad Pitts?
Starting point is 00:19:04 No kidding. Happy birthday, Mr. his birthday Brad Pitts Brad Pitts? No kidding Happy birthday Mr. Pitts Brad Pitts' birthday Alright well that's going to do it for this episode of the trending Miller's Night We'll be back tomorrow with another
