Starting point is 00:01:04 Up first, I explore the making of a rivalry. Kaitlyn Clark versus Angel Reese. Every great player needs a foil. I know I'll go down in history. People are talking about women's basketball just because of one single game. Clark and Reese have changed the way we consume women's sports. Listen to the making of a rivalry. Kaitlyn Clark versus Angel Reese on the iHeart on the iheart radio app apple podcast or wherever you
Starting point is 00:01:25 get your podcast presented by elf beauty founding partner of iheart women's sports hello the internet and welcome to this episode of mistrend impossible trend reckoning part one of two i thought he said part 22 was a little hard to hear him because he couldn't hear himself yeah he's just so fucking extreme man tom cruise is extreme if you don't know what we're talking about tom cruise released a video where he is just you know hovering somewhere high above the atmosphere it was in south africa yeah it looked it didn't even look like a helicopter i guess that's what it was. A high altitude helicopter. He was up there. He jumped out of a fucking thing.
Starting point is 00:02:10 Jumped out of a helicopter while delivering a speech about how thankful he is that people go see his movies. A little pathetic if you ask me. But he's so thankful. It's just so Tom Cruise. You're a movie star. You don't need to thank us for seeing your movies.
Starting point is 00:02:26 I mean, he's that humble guy you know that's always his character it's like shaking hands with people hey thanks a lot i'm tom cruise hey i'm very nice and also might kill myself in this very shot in one of these things i don't care though that's the thing i don't care i'm smiling i I'm Tom Cruise, man. All that outward energy, the jumping on the couch, the just clapping and laughing.
Starting point is 00:02:50 Like he's swallowed that down and like turned it into just cold fusion. Yeah. Just a, it's like that thing that powers it is iron powering him. Yeah. Yeah. He's just jumping on the couch, but it's definitely,
Starting point is 00:03:03 you know, he's out there living his best life as he always does taking it to the limit and i think you know still showing other men in their 60s that you can still be a fucking dude and be potent man yeah i will say some of the worst acting that i've seen this year was him and christopher mcquarrie uh doing their little exchange because at the beginning of the video he's talking to camera then like somebody reaches in and is like hey Tom
Starting point is 00:03:30 it's me Chris and he's like oh Chris McQuarrie the director it is work skit level acting that is happening here Tom look I appreciate you doing this but first of all it's a little pathetic that you're thanking us for going to see your movie.
Starting point is 00:03:46 Second of all, if we're trying to get some momentum started for you for a Best Actor nom, for a Mission Impossible, this is not it, man. This is not it. It doesn't matter, though. You can't act opposite Christopher McQuarrie and expect to
Starting point is 00:04:02 bring it, you know what I'm saying? Hell yeah. Yeah, but anyways. Hey, but they're in that helicopter dude and that's cool enough the bar is low enough yes january 6th the committee has spoketh and speaketh whatever the spaketh his name into existence yeah criminal referrals they're saying um people four of them four criminal charges against donald j trump they say hey doj this is what we're recommending a charge for obstructing an official proceeding charge for conspiracy to defraud the united states conspiracy to make false statements and insult and said, insulting, inciting or assisting an insurrection. And for just insulting and owning the lips, the lips for too many lip tears generated.
Starting point is 00:04:52 The DOJ should also go after John Eastman, who is basically like the legal architect on how to like fucking coup the shit with bunk votes and electors and things like that. And also they said That there should be some penalties for the sitting Members of Congress but we'll see what happens There honestly we'll see what happens with all of this Yeah he's also They're like mentioning like that he should be
Starting point is 00:05:16 Sanctioned it's just different because I know When it comes to sitting members of Congress They can't really they can't come after Other sitting members yeah Like they can give information that DOJ Would but they don't have the can't come after other sitting members yeah like they can give information that doj would but they don't have the power to like do shit yeah or or to have like the kinds of penalties that they want to see they can just recommend them obviously like if they had a majority like uh they could censure some people but i think now they're saying hey look at this
Starting point is 00:05:40 stuff go after it again just so you know this is them recommending it and the justice department has their own thing because jack smith is on the case uh and again yeah we'll see i mean we all saw it you don't gotta convince us yeah yeah no i was there i saw that i need to go watch a video of jack smith talking because i'm already getting the gravitas gravelly voice that i had muller having oh and you heard him speaking my head hey i'm jack bauer it's jack smith yeah asshole and he's like hey i'm jack he's gonna talk like a muppet for sure. Yeah. Hey, I'm Jack Smith, and I want to prosecute you. Sings everything.
Starting point is 00:06:29 Speaks in rhyme for some reason. His arms are all floppy and shit when he gets stressed out. And then the World Cup final happened over the weekend. Argentina defeated France. Yeah, that was a match. It was a match for the ages.
Starting point is 00:06:46 Yeah. Edge of your seat stuff. A lot of people, I think, at the end of the day, I think it's great that Lionel Messi won because it kind of deads the debate, the GOAT debate at this point. Like, Cristiano,
Starting point is 00:06:57 get the fuck out of here, bro. I mean, not to say you're not a fantastic player, but Messi, he lifted that World Cup. You didn't. And you could tell, man, the way the team was playing, not say you're not a fantastic player but messi he lifted that world cup you didn't uh and you could tell man the way the argentine like the way the team was playing it's like they knew they had to help messi get this shit like this they were playing for him it was pretty cool to see like it felt like they multiple times throughout the tournament they had these opportunities to just
Starting point is 00:07:23 be like okay clearly this isn't... They would have a 2-0 lead and then someone would come back and there would be the opportunity for them to just lose momentum or get down. It was just like what my dad would call mental toughness. Yeah, get back up. They knock you down, you get back up.
Starting point is 00:07:44 Yeah,i has this narrative that he can't win the world cup and he just gets in there and does the day and you could just tell the emotions man there's this other player uh and held the maria who's like around his age too and like they've a lot of people like y'all are part of this golden generation like where's our world cup you should be doing it and he was so stressed out when he got subbed off like he was crying when they scored he was crying when they got scored on because the fucking emotions were running so high before there were like journalists from argentina like telling lionel messi like hey just so you know no matter what happens in the final like you have to know like
Starting point is 00:08:17 all of the joy that you've generated for all these people and like that's really like trying to just let him know like you are we are deifying you you're sanctified obviously so please don't it would be great to lift the world cup but none of us are judging you based on what you do there and then look lifts the thing and then also fucking ghosted salt bae I think
Starting point is 00:08:38 that was the my favorite clip aside from seeing Lionel Messi very happy to win was salt bae like the fucking, that chef dude who will be throwing like the rock salt on the super expensive steaks. Yeah. A lot of soccer players go to his restaurants. Messi has been there.
Starting point is 00:08:53 Like I know like they flicked it up before when he went to the Salt Bae restaurant. This dude got on the field after the match and he's trying to like take a selfie with Lionel Messi who has just achieved like fucking, he's become to take a selfie with Lionel Messi, who has just achieved fucking... He's become deified. Okay? And this guy's tugging at his arm like, hey, hey, hey, hey.
Starting point is 00:09:12 Like trying to get... And he turns around and goes, yeah. Remember me from the restaurant? He looks around. He looks at him and he's like, motherfucker, I don't know you. Get the fuck off of me. Yo. That's great.
Starting point is 00:09:22 And he keeps following him. I love people with just no sense of proportion when it comes to their own self right right exactly like bro you're not secondary or even tertiary character in this man's like reality right now you're some dude he like you're ronald mcdonald have i told you about the person who got invited last minute to our wedding and she stopped my wife walking up the aisle oh my god you look so beautiful we'd never met her before that day i've never met her since and then like yeah just really owned the whole day holy shit it's just like this is about me i know you guys don't realize it yet but this is about me.
Starting point is 00:10:05 I know I got a pity invite, but hold everything. Girl, you look great. All right, go ahead. Go have your wedding. Go have your little wedding. I'm right here. All right, let's take a quick break and we'll be right back. I'm Jess Casavetto, executive producer of the hit Netflix documentary series,

And we're the host of the new podcast, Forgive Me For I Have Followed. Jessica and I will delve into the hidden truths between high-control groups and interview dancers, church members, and others whose lives and careers have been impacted, just like mine. The only difference between the person who doesn't get the job and the person who gets the job is usually who applies. Yeah, I think a lot about that quote. What is it like you miss 100% of the shots you never take? Yeah, rejection is scary, but it's better than you rejecting yourself. Together, we'll share what it really takes
Starting point is 00:12:12 to thrive in the early years of your career without sacrificing your sanity or sleep. Listen to Let's Talk Offline on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. I'm Keri Champion, and this is season four of Naked Sports, where we live at the intersection of sports and culture. Up first, I explore the making of a rivalry, Kaitlyn Clark versus Angel Reese. I know I'll go down in history. People are talking about women's basketball just because of one single game. Every great player needs a foil.
Starting point is 00:12:46 I ain't really near them boys. I just come here to play basketball every single day, and that's what I focus on. From college to the pros, Clark and Reese have changed the way we consume women's sports. Angel Reese is a joy to watch. She is unapologetically black. I love her. What exactly ignited this fire? Why has it been so good for the game?
Starting point is 00:13:08 And can the fanfare surrounding these two supernovas be sustained? This game is only going to get better because the talent is getting better. This new season will cover all things sports and culture. Listen to Naked Sports on the Black Effect Podcast Network, iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. The Black Effect Podcast Network is sponsored by diet coke and we're back and so is christopher nolan film bros rejoice yeah i'm a film bro about Christopher Nolan Movies for the most part
Starting point is 00:13:46 Hell yeah dude I get excited You know about in camera you know about practical effects Yeah Did you know he does those practical He won't even If somebody even says the word CGI on his set He will fire their ass
Starting point is 00:14:01 He'll fucking tombstone pile Sitting on his set or Saying the word cgi or even using words with cgi in them he's like a a blood you can't even use yeah oh wow okay i won't even let you use the c word what's up with this bgi up in here he won't even hire people with the initial cgi um but yeah the oppenheimer trailer is out we just got teasers you saw killian murphy look real like stressed out because he has the weight of i don't know unleashing atomic bombs weighing on his soul yeah but the trailer i don't if
Starting point is 00:14:39 it looks intense there's something about just intercutting like what i believe is them trying to show like the process of like splitting an atom and the energy that's released as sort of like these like interstitial things that are happening. It causes much stress. Yeah. There's a part there. I think they're assembling the bomb by hand with like 20 people in suits
Starting point is 00:15:01 just looking on. And everybody's like, I don't know. That's what's so wild. Everybody's like, this is the that's what's so wild everybody's like oh this is the most powerful shit we're about to fucking set the earth in a direction we can't reverse course from well is this a good idea jay yeah you know yeah but i'm curious to see because it's i mean the story is fucking fascinating uh i mean obviously it leads to
Starting point is 00:15:18 some really horrific shit but uh that's what i'm curious like what the handling like hero fine is there like who are the heroes who are meant to be thought of as the heroes in this because it's very complicated will be interesting i was very relieved to see because the teaser trailer had him photographed in black and white and i was like what are we doing is this gonna be black and white not that there's anything wrong with black and white but i'll say there is i have child brain i remember that was the litmus test for like when a parent or grandparent was like you know you'd love this movie and it'd be black and white and i would start crying because i'm
Starting point is 00:15:54 like i don't want to watch it i still haven't seen that classic holiday movie that's black and white oh uh it's a wonderful life yeah still haven't seen it i see that shit in drips and drabs and i'm like it's just every when something's on and it's black and white and this is a very dumb take and it reveals a stupidity i'm not proud of we're we're genius level for not fucking with black and white you know when something's on tv and it's black and white it might as well be happening in the background of another movie that's what i associate black and white movies with is like shit that's on tv in another movie and look don't i know i know y'all don't come here for art takes so uh be warned we're the kind of people who are
Starting point is 00:16:36 put off by fucking monochromatic audio visual productions like i can't even watch have you seen something that's been the color's been added in post? Like, that's even freaky. Is Wizard of Oz that? I feel like Wizard of Oz. Wizard of Oz. Maybe. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:16:50 It all freaks me out. I, uh, I've seen Casablanca. I thought that was good. Sunset Boulevard, really good. It's just, I had to, like, watch those for class to be. And then, like, once I watched them, I was like, oh, man, this is really fucking good. You know what's wild? The one black and white film I remember the most is Naked Lunch by David Lynch.
Starting point is 00:17:09 I don't think I've seen that. My dad made me watch that shit when I was a kid. And that shit is fucking not for kids. No. I mean, I've read the book and there are detailed descriptions of assholes and things of that nature right off the jump. Yeah. Look, man, man you know that's just that's where we were at oh no it's david cronenberg that's right david cronenberg david's mixed up yeah um imperial supreme court is trending because people are pointing out that in addition to their you know just, just proudly, overtly,
Starting point is 00:17:46 out in the open, rightward bent, the Supreme Court is also making a bunch of decisions that are consolidating power in, you guessed it, the Supreme Court. A Stanford professor wrote in the Harvard Law Review. So that's actually Stanford and Harvard. So it has to be true but he wrote a thing called the imperial supreme court that was like the court has not been favoring one branch of government over another favoring states over the federal government or the rights of people over government rather it is withdrawing power from all of them at once
Starting point is 00:18:20 and just gobbling up saying yum gimme gimme, gimme, gimme. Oh my God. The part where I said, saying yum, gimme, gimme, gimme. That is in there. That is, oh, it is? Yeah. I mean, I figured it probably was, but I was doing a bit of ad-libbing.
Starting point is 00:18:35 No, no, that's in there. But yeah, I don't know. Scary. Yeah. Every single thing now, because all the headlines are like, well, the Supreme Court's going to decide if you can drink lead or you need more lead in your water yeah what if you can sue
Starting point is 00:18:49 companies for putting cancer in your baby powder supreme court's about to decide if your fucking vote even matters and then yeah because it truly is it's like everything stops there uh and i'm not sure where the checks and or balances are yeah and for anybody who missed the episode johnson and johnson baby powder has had carcinogens in them uh has been causing people to die uh early from cancer uh women in particular and they've known this for many years decades uh they didn't do anything about it but what they did do is pay a like lobbying lobbyist uh lawyer like millions of dollars a year that lobbyist's uh name was something something cavanaugh he is brett cavanaugh's dad so it is like a generational uh fuck you to our world from the Kavanaugh family. Merry Christmas.
Starting point is 00:19:45 He's like, Kavanaugh's like, I mean, a long tradition of people just fucking shit up for, you know, their own personal enrichment. Yeah. And finally,
Starting point is 00:19:53 Airbnb is trending. Why are they trending? Well, guess what? It only took fucking forever, but they're like, Hey, look,
Starting point is 00:20:01 we know there was this viral post where someone was like, there's a slave cabin that you can that's so quaint uh that you could stay in they're like yeah okay so um you can't do slave cabins anymore for rent on airbnb we we realized that's not good uh for anybody it says the new policy states any listing of a residence on a plantation quote if structures that existed during the time of slavery are still present on the property they will be taken down from the site you cannot rent hey all right airbnb yep yep and it said also any structures built for the purpose of housing enslaved people will be barred from future listings and renters will be prohibited from
Starting point is 00:20:39 using a property's quote slave related features as a marketing tool jesus christ slave related features i wow wow that's such a fucking wild phrase holy shit can you not refer to like the slave related features features is what's weird i think yes slave related features that's that's clearly written by someone who has no idea like how violent slavery is and like just treats it like it's like talking about the materials used yeah so cool i mean after all the free viral marketing from barbarian and other things you know now they're nailing it once again with their pr uh airbnb yeah and it's something that absolutely it's just so interesting too because it's a thing that most american people haven't reckoned with enough to know that it's like that's the last fucking
Starting point is 00:21:37 structure you would want to lay your head in right like energetically all the shit that was like you want to fucking that's your vacation spot and it's funny too because like a place that has that still standing yeah well you also see too and like how they're they're like they're you know disparities and even how plantations just like when they have tours of a plantation how they even describe what happened there and some were like very sober and like this was the scene of terrible untold suffering and others like it was a fabulous place where the cotton grew and the people sang and you're like what the fuck have your wedding
Starting point is 00:22:11 here yeah all right well those are some of the things that are trending on this Monday December 19th we are back tomorrow with the whole last episode of the show until then be kind to each other be kind to yourselves get the vaccine kind to yourselves.
