So please enjoy this best of 2024 episode that features a blend of fun conversations with the athletics Mo DeKille, Anscapes Martinsi Johnson, comedian Megan Gailey, writer, creator, extraordinaire Jasmine Watkins, sports better and analyst Jamison Welsh and comedian Matt Lieb. Welcome to the show. I guess we should just start talking at the state of the Milwaukee Bucks, you know, four and six over the last 10.
Starting point is 00:01:34 I'm like, is everything okay? I was asking Jabari before this, I'm like, is this panic time or is this a dark rivers bias? Yeah, let me just start by saying, Jabari did not tell me we'll be talking about soon if he had to do that or not come on here uh... that's not a hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot hot Like you said, they're two and five. I think. Yeah, I got there. They weren't playing exactly great before, but at least the record was
Starting point is 00:02:08 better. So before it was the process was bad, but the results were great. And now the results are bad. And according to people in Milwaukee, the process is great. I've missed some of the games, but like if you're losing, I don't
Starting point is 00:02:20 think the process is all that great. But for the game I saw last, I don't I think that was the hornets which whatever but When we saw the nasty Guy the sham guy to smitty Who's no respect on the masses his name? Yeah, I know these people like to pick on him, but yeah He shows you can't actually ball. He's a real NBA player. Yeah, just the 15th man
Starting point is 00:02:46 Yeah, I gotta say like just just I so I'm a Sixers fan I remember when we exported James Harden to the Clippers they had a rough start and then the 76ers nests kind of washed off of him through repetition and the 76ers-ness kind of washed off of him through repetition. And now they're one of the best teams in the league. So I will just say, sometimes it takes a 76ers export, a couple reps to just like get the negative energy
Starting point is 00:03:17 off of them. And so I would give yourself a little bit of time, maybe a couple more games, and then you're gonna go on like a wild winning streak That's is this a metaphor about Pat Bay or Doc Rivers the Doc Rivers doctor Yeah, because yeah, I mean I remember the last I was like see when James Harden went there I was like see it's he's not that and then of course not the best in it. He's good
Starting point is 00:03:47 He's really good. Yeah, and I knew he was good. I knew he was good last season Counter I mean we seen James Harden be great in a regular season and then it's the same old story in playoff So like, you know wait until June before you completely buy into your theory that he watched all the 76ers off of him. But yeah, it's not great for the bucks that you have to not only fire your coach mid season, but then hire a completely new one. I didn't even go to interim route. There was like, no, we're going to completely clean break. Yeah, clean break replaced everything with Doc Rivers, which I mean, obviously he's had success if you win championship in NBA. Yeah. But so many people can say that. But at the same time, I don't know how to put this other than I don't like his vibe. I believe
Starting point is 00:04:42 Doc Rivers is the future. I don't. I'm just kidding. But I mean, even how he got here, if you believe that athletics reporting, but if he can, if we can give it some time, seven games is not enough. I don't think. Right. I mean, Adrian Griffin got 30 semi game. So give it some time.
Starting point is 00:05:01 But I didn't like what I saw in the beginning of the season, even when they went on that wind streak, a lot of those, like one of the, one of those games I believe was the one that Dame hit the game winner. So there's a lot to want more from this year. Obviously the partnership of him and Dame, the health of Chris Middleton is Brooke Lopez still a defensive stalwart. It's still a question. But if they have stability now, if the players believe in their coach,
Starting point is 00:05:28 which it was clear, even before day one, it felt like they did not believe in Adrian Griffin, then there can be some optimism. But until then, it looks rough. Yeah. You remember that Shimmer Sheen material that all the basketball shorts are made of in the nineties that like, if you had a cat and it errantly scratched it, it like ruined the entire, it was like one thread and the whole thing is dead.
Starting point is 00:05:55 It's like scrunched on the side. I remember when she brought it back for Ross, it had one of those scratches in it. And I'm like, okay, so this is why it was at Ross. But I was like so in love with it. Cause I was like, yes, I am part of the world is mine, which is what I'm stood for. The Twism movement. Yeah. He had, I mean, Shaq was such a like, you know, like in the era of the big superstars, like with Michael Jordan taking up all the oxygen, like having a big guy
Starting point is 00:06:22 like Shaq who felt like a fun, lovable kid, whose gigantic shoe was in every mall in America for some reason. Cause everyone's like, get a load of this guy's foot. Yeah. Yeah. And it became like the number one novelty item in America, like surpassing giant ball of string. It was like Shaq shoe.
Starting point is 00:06:42 Yeah. Yeah. No, it was, it was like roadside attraction famous like Yeah, we're just like look look at this freak It was crazy too because like in the era of Michael Jordan, which he is taking up all of the space To even have another Superstar who also you know had You know, he was a Reebok guy. So right, you know, he had uh, you know, he, he, he was a Reebok guy.
Starting point is 00:07:05 So, you know, he had his silhouette on there. They tried to make that happen. Yeah. But, but, you know, and, and he's, he hadn't, he hadn't even won a championship yet. You know, it took him, you know, a few years he had gone to the finals with the magic, but he had not won a ring. Yeah. He was beaten by, uh, you know, like better centers.
Starting point is 00:07:28 Yeah. Yeah. And still he was like this big superstar. So when he went to the Lakers, I was like, this is cool. But also, you know, all y'all are bandwagon. I've loved the Lakers ever since my middle school teacher teacher was elder campus brother lied to me and told me he was Elvington was that in cable's brother tall yeah very tall that was the other thing that I believed it so I'm gonna I'm gonna believe it
Starting point is 00:07:54 also was like Eldon is a is is you know this guy's a weird accent but Eldon does seem like like type of name you would have if your whole family had weird files would name yeah yes like a... Anglophiles would name... Yeah, yes, like a transatlantic accent family would name their kid Elton. Right, right. Yeah. And so yeah, so I was always like, you know, Kobe doesn't get respect. Like everyone's buying Shaq albums, nobody's buying thug poetry. Yeah. And I was like, you know, he's a, he's not a great rapper, but he can rap in Italian. Why do people not respect this guy?
Starting point is 00:08:28 He won the dunk contest, you know? Uh, and then when the dunk contest did, did Kobe not win the dunk contest? Am I crazy? The dunk? I thought he did. That was like his second or first year. Like as a, I thought he did like the first year, second year. How is that more iconic that he was like kind of he he he has like his what was his move?
Starting point is 00:08:52 It was oh man. It's been so long, but it was like he definitely dunked the ball good. I remember. All right. Yeah, I just wanted to make sure he dunked the ball good. Here's a refresher for Kobe's dunk contest in 1997. The thing that I remember was that he wore his shooting shirt for it which was very like oh okay we like that and I remember wanting a shooting shirt. 18 years year. Okay. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:26 Eighteen years old, his second year. Exactly. Straight out of high school. Oh, went down between his legs and got to wear his shooting shirt the whole time. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I feel like that casual, casual, well, casual also kind of a mistake because why,
Starting point is 00:09:44 why is this not more iconic? You say a mistake, but you know, but you didn't win the shooting. Yeah, I guess so comes off. Oh, then they'll do it one more time. Oh, and he went through the legs and then flexed. No, but like, what's the big show? His last one, I think, was, oh, yeah. And Brandy's in the audience.
Starting point is 00:10:04 Like he's in the audience That is important because I took Brandy to the prom right he did take me Go babe, and then what was this one? Oh, no, you try to go for a bounce between the legs. I Don't want to see that replay. It's not nice. All right. So here's the last one we saw. We saw Michael Finley already. The through the legs was definitely like the most iconic one. And I, yeah.
Starting point is 00:10:37 Oh yeah. This is like pumped back. Yeah. Yeah. Like that. Reverse. He, he proved himself to be athletically like one of the greatest. And then, you know, everyone just called him a ball hog for his first, like three,
Starting point is 00:10:51 four years in the NBA, but it was true. You know, well, he did keep, he averaged five steals from his teammates. Just a status, a stat bro. Yeah, but it was, but no, but you could see that belief in him too. I remember like one of the playoff series against the Jazz and he was throwing up so many shots and I was like, dude, relax. Like you aren't the answer to this right now, but you could tell that like that turned into what Kobe then became, which was like that real self belief in himself and be like, I'm
Starting point is 00:11:24 not, I'm not serious. I'm not, I'm not serious. I'm like, I'm not joking. I will, I will negate every contribution from this other team by myself if I have to. And yeah, that was a thing that was a little bit, I remember being frustrated as a young fan because it just didn't feel like it, his belief was matching what was showing up on the court. But then when those things were reconciled, oh yeah. and once everything started to come together, once they were running the triangle, once they, you know, got, uh, Phil Jackson,
Starting point is 00:11:52 they immediately were winning championships and he was still, you know, people were still, you know, talking trash. I was like, you're wrong. Kobe's Jordan. And then like LeBron James came out in 2003 and I was like, oh Kobe yeah, I still hate Jordan Wow don't like LeBron from just that because I'm people trying to shift the focus away from my man Kobe Yeah, this is a this is for people who don't live in LA This is how most Lakers fans, I feel like, at least,
Starting point is 00:12:27 yeah, a sickness that most Lakers fans have is they are, they resent that LeBron came to the Lakers and won a championship. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, it hurt. They're like, I hate this guy. Yeah, I'm like, he's just coming here, he just wants to win one with our jersey on.
Starting point is 00:12:42 They, Lakers fans coined the term Mickey Mouse Branding for Disneyland second of all we don't like this guy a question that just occurred to me about Shaq because Arguably he went into the profession Where the thing that is most notable about him is the least remarkable, which is like he's around other people who are huge. He like makes them look small by comparison. Yeah, like Shaq is I don't think people understand how big Shaq is.
Starting point is 00:13:19 He's massive and just huge in every direction. Yes. And do we think he would have had a like, he would have been world famous if he just like never picked up a basketball. Oh, just because like, look at this big guy. He would be a big guy who's like incredibly like charismatic and cool. And like, wait, so in this alternate universe, where, where does he, what's his path? He goes, does he, what's his path? He goes, does he go to LSU still? I don't know if he goes to LSU, but like WWE maybe.
Starting point is 00:13:52 Yeah. Oh, interesting. I could see him being like a Andre the giant. Yeah. Like an Andre the giant. Yeah. People like that. By the way, forget how big Andre the giant was.
Starting point is 00:14:00 He's another one. Yeah. It was like you, you, when you think he's a giant, you're just like, Oh, there's giants in the NBA. No, he's like Jack. He's like, yeah. Why check a can of Coke and have your mind blown. Right. Yeah. Yeah. I like, I just, every finger is the size of a two liter bottle. You know, you're just like, what the hell? Yeah. But yeah, no, he was like,
Starting point is 00:14:24 always one of those guys who I think people, you know, uh, you saw him as kind of a freak. You know what I mean? It was just like, damn, this guy's huge, but what made him amazing was the quick. He was fast. Yeah. It's like, I'm great. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:14:41 He would have wanted, you would have wanted him doing something athletic. Maybe in this scenario, he's just like the world's greatest NFL something or other. Yeah. Oh my god. Yeah, imagine someone that Like that all he played center in the NFL like whatever team like the people rushing behind him Yeah, but you think the tush push is effective With like normal people like an actual just playing like lineback people. You have like an actual superhero linebacker. You're like, don't throw it to me over the middle. Leave me alone.
Starting point is 00:15:12 He would literally kill people. People would have died. Oh, Shaquille. How we adore you. All right. Shall we take a quick break? Yeah, let's take a quick break. And then we're going gonna tilt our eyes over toward Paris.
Starting point is 00:15:30 Ooh. That's where the Olympics is happening. We'll be right back. Sometimes when it comes to your personal fitness goals, you just need a plan. Peloton can give you the plan, absolutely. And Steve, you've got a Peloton. I sure do.
Starting point is 00:15:43 And Steve benefits from things like a variety of challenging classes. There are four week strength building classes, running, cycling, everything in between. Peloton can adapt to any goal in this season of your life. And by the way, the holidays are around the corner. Now is when you need to be on the Peloton. Find your push, find your power with Peloton at OnePeloton.ca. What's going on everybody? This is Justin Pennick from John Boy Media, the host of the Football Today podcast alongside Bobby Skinner and Chris Rose.
Starting point is 00:16:14 We're rolling three times a week on Mondays, on Wednesdays, on Fridays, breaking down everything you need to know about the NFL. We're talking about the MVP race. Is Josh Allen gonna pull it out? Lamar Jackson? Can Saquon Barkley even break the rushing record? Can the Steelers keep up their momentum? We talk about everything. We break it down. Stats, analytics, and of course, Chris Rose is bringing his perspective on being a pro in the media world as well. Listen to football today on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts and you will be glad you did. Hope you could join us for the postseason run. As a comedian, I get it. Sometimes there's a cities that you go, oof, I go there and
Starting point is 00:17:06 I take an L, you know? I take an L in my hometown. Indianapolis is like, we're good. Thank you. Next. I do have to ask because I am married and live with a Lakers fan. And so sometimes it's hard to go, oh, am I part of this Stockholm Syndrome relationship or like, I need to like take a step out of it? Because the other day I go, now what, after the loss, I said, what is Lakers Twitter saying? Because I can't go to Lakers Twitter, but I do like to be updated. Yeah, that's right. Yeah, it's like Narnia. And he's like, oh, Lakers Twitter is game planning, how they can win in seven.
Starting point is 00:17:50 And I was like, wow, okay. Yeah. Good. And they saw the same game I saw too, where... Yeah. I mean, it was wild because we were, you, Jabari, Jack, and I were all texting and we all watched this run. We're like, and that's where we just lost the game. Like the Lakers just, you stumble for a little bit.
Starting point is 00:18:10 They will take advantage and they will just take off with the lead in a way you cannot claw back, especially if not with the kind of shooting we had, it was just like, after that I was like, oh, it's done. And we're like, we're not even in the fourth. I was like, I'm good. I already know how this ends. Cause I've seen the team into Jack's point. We just lacked the cow. I liked that. I prefer that we don't lack the willpower. We like, we're not even in the fourth. I was like, I'm good. I already know how this ends because I've seen the team and to Jack's point, we just lacked the cow. I liked, I prefer that we don't lack the willpower.
Starting point is 00:18:28 We like, we just, no, definitely not the willpower. LeBron has all the willpower, all the training, all the, it's just, it's just caloric. He needs the, um, he needs to eat one of those, uh, dogs, the, what are the bacon wrapped? Sausages outside of an alley dog danger dog danger dog. Yeah, he just needed a couple those danger dogs. He'll be good It's it's wild though. I my one hope for the Lakers is I remember specifically after game one or maybe game two of the series with the Warriors last year,
Starting point is 00:19:14 I felt as certain as I do right now that it was over for the Lakers. They looked bad. They looked cooked. It was like, oh, the Warriors figured them out. I remember Zach Lowe being like, yeah, no. I mean, this is just the point that LeBron's at in his career and it's an embarrassing way to go out but uh, you know, and then he is The best at figuring things that you know, he's probably the smartest basketball player we've ever seen so I just don't know what he's gonna figure out At this point that he didn't figure out last year when they got swept or in any of the regular season games But we've seen him figure things out against like, you know, it's usually that's the worst I guess Another alien aging team. I mean like yeah doing that against a on their way out warriors versus
Starting point is 00:20:00 On their way up nuggets is just uh, I don't know. I think it's a bit That's where I have to I have to fly it You know flow back to real world not Laker fan world like don't worry, baby We got this hang it up. Yeah, you know just they take check the size for the banner, baby We're doing this as my friend Sean from Cleveland always says the LeBron James team is never desperate He has not been saying it as much lately though. So yeah And impression now that really like He has not been saying it as much lately though. So that was such a good Lakers fan impression though. That really like what I said, I would know no miles.
Starting point is 00:20:30 I was, I was back at the Lakers game when I was pregnant and men were very mad at me for being pregnant. You know, I was like back there. Yeah. Yeah. Sorry about that. But yeah, that's where like I have to jettison myself from the pain of of just holding on to a dream That is pure fantasy at this point
Starting point is 00:20:49 I mean like it's just not like as much as I want to believe it I just I just can't I can't bring myself there and that's called self preservation Yeah, is there any of you that's like why did we put ourselves in this position? Or be the seven seed to be course. Yeah ourselves in this position to be the seven seed to be played. Yeah. Cause there's a lot of that happening at my house too. Yes. We've created our own prison that we have to rot inside of and go stagnant in and what
Starting point is 00:21:14 it is, what it is. And now I'm reading that we're going to bring Darwin Ham back next season already. We're seeing stories like this. Please don't let that be true for my for my family's sake. Yeah much playing time as he is um Alright, we do want to talk about Anthony Edwards. Yeah, you know Thank you something. I could feel excited. Yes This was the most fun thing about the game ones was Anthony Edwards just
Starting point is 00:21:41 Coming through. I mean him against Kevin Durant and KD looked, you know, put up 33, uh, had some amazing points, but Anthony Edwards was just, uh, 33 points and I'm bored. Six assists, two steals like big steals. Um, and just a lot of energy attitude, trash talking, funny, like charming. It's like, it's so many stats outside of the points too. It's like, you are a star. Get like, please let me run development for your company.
Starting point is 00:22:18 Like I just love you. Your brand, yeah. My son, my not even two year old son went to his first basketball practice on Saturday. He wore Anthony Edwards shoes and he did not play one second. There was a playground right next to the basketball court and he said, I'm out of here.
Starting point is 00:22:35 He got so many compliments. Dads were like, where'd you get those shoes? To a baby. So it's like, this is the star power. Please talk to me, not the child. I'm sorry, yeah, where did you get the shoes? Yeah Jack I can't believe you got nothing else to say about the Sixers Do you just want to gloss right over that? He's like a mixer plug in the wind
Starting point is 00:23:01 Well, I mean what the game has started like as we're're recording this, the sixes are down, three one, the game, the elimination game has started, and I don't know, it's, yeah, like they have not been able to win the close ones. And that's, and B seems too slow to rebound, seems to be the main problem, and so there's just a lot of problems on the offensive boards, you know, and also injury.
Starting point is 00:23:30 And it's just like a truly cursed career for this man in Philadelphia. Just seeing that that shot of him that they're saying like, yo, he's got a mild case of Bell's palsy, like, you know, like a form like facial paralysis. And I was half his face is paralyzed for some, I could not. I was like, yo, this guy is doing everything right now. He's like, I got half a leg, my face is paralyzed. And he's still, I still made that shot.
Starting point is 00:23:58 I was like, Hey, he put up like everybody's talking about him being historically bad in the playoffs. He does seem about him being historically bad in the playoffs He does seem to have historical bad luck in the playoffs. Um, he did put up 50 in game three despite that one of the strangest just performances in a in a Basketball like seemed for the first half. It was like is he all right? Is everything okay with him? Like, he seems like he's going through things emotionally down and he ended up having 50 and the Sixers won the game.
Starting point is 00:24:32 But yeah, I just think I think the Knicks are too quick for them. Things things aren't with him being injured. They they're just it's a it's a liability for the six or so. They are on 10 two right now. I always sound defeated. Even when they're, if they were up for one, this is how I would sound. This is just what I know to be a six or fan.
Starting point is 00:24:57 We were doing this all season. We're like, Jack, look at them. They're doing, they're putting a little run together. You're like, I don't know. I'm like, come on, tap into the dilute. It's funny. Every time we have Philly fans on like Blake Wexler too, everyone has like the same thing. It's like, I don't know, man. Like, I'll believe it when I see it, but, but I will watch and maybe go along.
Starting point is 00:25:19 What a sad life. And we're over here on the other end of the spectrum just like, yeah, Lakers championship next year We're both on the same like a school bus going off a cliff But it's like that meme where someone's looking out one side of the bus and the other person looking at the other side of the bus And like but we're on the same bus. Yeah, it's just like the Laker fans like wow We are not on the same bus by the way We've had an MVP or near MVP for the past, you know, four years and every year the playoffs are a disaster.
Starting point is 00:25:56 So due to like thing, it like doesn't make sense. Like, I mean, I guess it makes sense because he's seven foot two and, you know, has just like a massive body and like, you know that, but it's sense because he's seven foot two and, you know, has just like a massive body and like, you know, that, but it's every he'll have a great year and then like things just start to fall apart right at the postseason. Just a long season. It's too long.
Starting point is 00:26:18 Yeah. But like this year, you know, he took some time off. I guess he was badly injured. Anyways, it's none of this makes sense. It's been a fun ride as a fan and I am no longer a Sixers fan. Thank you. Oh, oh, okay. That's been my time.
Starting point is 00:26:34 You sound like Elon Musk on that Tesla shareholders call. It's like, actually we don't make cars. We actually have AI robotics. Yeah. So it's not an L. I'm just a fan of the great game of basketball. Thank you. Yes, you have, you have transcended. You have transcended. Well, speaking of transcended,
Starting point is 00:26:49 I think it's time we start a new tradition here on the show. It's time to give a quick eulogy to the teams we have lost to the postseason. Cue the, cue the church music, please. Dearly beloved, Cue the church music, please. Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to lay several teams down to rest this week. And although they each fought valiantly, we're going to need the Pelicans to step up first. Please, please, please approach the lectern, please. I think they're in a better place now. They are in a better place. When they were getting swept a couple nights ago.
Starting point is 00:27:26 The most depressing detail as we were going through the eulogy notes, they won 49 games in the regular season this year. That is the third most in franchise history. And it didn't even feel like that could a season for them. Right. Right. They still only have two playoff wins Yes, since the 2017 2018 season is this how you're supposed to eulogize someone at their funeral is just saying depressing I mean, it's kind of it's a little bit. It's just kind of just I guess maybe we'll call it a post-mortem
Starting point is 00:28:00 Yeah, okay the best of health moving forward and, you know, happy trails to Brandon Ingram, I guess. Absolutely. And to the Pelicans, you know, now you have time to tour the beaches of Galveston, Texas or go to Faraday, Louisiana. It's all fun and games. Phoenix Suns fans, we're talking to you next.
Starting point is 00:28:26 And there was plenty of evidence that a manufactured super team would rarely work. We honestly, we can't fault you for trying, for having a dream. Look, I was there, I thought Gary Payton and Karl Malone, anyways, let's forget it. Anyway, I'm just saying we can't fault you for trying. We can't fault you for trying.
Starting point is 00:28:47 I did really believe. I really believed that they might be able to do something because of how good the nets looked four years ago. That's what that was the logic that I was clinging to. I remember. I remember when the nets had it working for a second and KD like peak, but it was peak KD. So that was the difference
Starting point is 00:29:05 Anyways, the rumor mill is already a buzz surrounding multiple stars head coach Frank Vogel The team in general we wish you safe trails to casa grande and now my my Laker fans our time has come yet again, as Denver has done it to us again. I don't think AD, look, you may have played a career high in games, in LeBron, in his most
Starting point is 00:29:37 games since 2018, only for the team to not perform to expectations and have immediate rumors about his future in LA following the season. But at least this ride has been fun and completely free of anxiety or angst. I'm not, it was full of anxiety and actually, who am I kidding? Look, the Nuggets seem to have been our Alpha and our Omega. We started the season playing them.
Starting point is 00:30:00 They pieced us up. Then when we were unveiling Kobe Bryant's statue, we played y'all, you pieced us up. Then when we were unveiling Kobe Bryant's statue, we played y'all. You pieced us up. Then the night LeBron James became the first player to reach 40,000 points. You pieced us up. And now we meet again as you nuggets lay us to rest. And we ride off into North Hollywood relaxation. Thank you so much.
Starting point is 00:30:29 All right. We're going to, we're going to take a quick break and we're going to be right back with the fourth quarter right after this. Wow. You're really crying. That's incredible. That's these are courage tears, man. Cause I'm so courageous, bro.
Starting point is 00:30:43 Sometimes when it comes to your personal fitness goals, you just need a plan. Peloton can give you the plan, absolutely. And Steve, you've got a Peloton. I sure do. And Steve benefits from things like a variety of challenging classes. There are four week strength building classes, running, cycling, everything in between. Peloton can adapt to any goal in this season of your life. And by the way, the holidays are around the corner.
Starting point is 00:31:04 Now is when you need to be on the Peloton. Find your push, find your power with Peloton at onepeloton.ca. What's going on everybody? Starting point is 00:31:24 on Wednesdays, on Fridays breaking down everything you need to know about the NFL. We're talking about the MVP race. Is Josh Allen going to pull it out? Lamar Jackson? Can Saquon Barkley even break the rushing record? Can the Steelers keep up their momentum? We talk about everything.
Starting point is 00:31:41 We break it down. Stats, analytics, and of course Chris Rose is bringing his perspective on being a pro in the media world as well Listen to football today on the I heart radio app Apple podcasts or wherever you get your Podcasts and you will be glad you did. Hope you could join us for the postseason run and run. And we're back. We're back. And okay. Yes.
Starting point is 00:32:11 The 76ers played before the all time classic game. That should just be, should determine who wins the championship. I should. Yeah. If you, if you had the most exciting double OT in the regular season, just give us number 18. I mean, you want to stop the count. Just turn him in too. Like that's like, you know you had the most exciting double OT in the regular season, just give us number 18 I mean you want to turn him into like that, you know, stop the count mo that's what I If you want a funny story like one time I was playing Deandre Jordan was a rookie when I was with the Clippers one time and I was like we had a screwing around on the court or something and playing one-on-one but he couldn't shoot from the paint as soon as
Starting point is 00:32:50 I took the lead I was like I'm done I gotta go to stop the paint and just ran off the court like that was my version to stop the count. It's like every time he would talk to me I'd be like I beat you in one-on-one yeah it's like run it back I'm I have my knee though little we should we should have we should have introduced you as somebody who? Just destroyed Deandre in one on one And he hasn't been the same since no, but yeah that night Jack. Well, I was you know, so People are coming after well against Denver Joel was a late scratch
Starting point is 00:33:22 After well against Denver Joel was a late scratch And the memes were coming for my man Joel and bead my man talking about how he's scared of Jokic I just want to set the record straight. Okay. He has dominated Jokic in the last few matchups He's not afraid of Jokic. He's afraid of the altitude few matchups he's not afraid of Jokic he's afraid of the altitude have you tried to exercise at altitude yes it's so hard yeah like he's just being smart he also has been paid in Utah right in a while yeah man it's hard yeah cuz wait I think Jabbar was saying he hasn't played in Denver since 2019. I think yeah
Starting point is 00:34:08 I haven't played in Denver either. I don't know that yeah, where you out man? See I was I was like I think I'm off this and bead guy for the Lakers You know cuz like we kind of got to go there to make stuff happen So you know a couple times a couple times a year Yeah, people are looking for an excuse to be out on him. Like that. That was what that whole thing taught me is people were just ready to be like, I'm tired of this guy. He's so many people.
Starting point is 00:34:33 Yeah. Like Bill Simmons, especially. He's like, yeah, well, you know, you'll get to know he's doing it. And he asked me when you win an NBA title with Larry Bird on your team. What? What does this have to do with Larry Bird, man? Yeah, it's are back to Bird Bill Simmons is tough to I listen to his show He is both dismissive of the 76ers
Starting point is 00:34:55 But then like also secretly like fears that he's he's like the 76ers like don't they they stink like that I'm not worried about them, but then like when he's talking about potential trades He's like my absolute nightmare. Is that like Bruce Brown goes to the 70s? I'm like, which one is it? And yeah, is it was it one Mike? Yeah, that's it. That's the game though Like everybody's kind of counting out the sixers till they do it in the playoffs It's right. Yeah, not that different than what we did with Denver Sure Whether it was fair or not like we counted them out until they went and won the finals.
Starting point is 00:35:26 Like it was along those years. So it's along those lines in that sense. So like you, you, you understand it from them and look, it's a bad look. It's a bad look, you know, that he, not to play. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, listen, if he's genuinely hurt, totally get it respected, all that stuff. He hurt, don't play up.
Starting point is 00:35:43 We know his knee injuries and stuff like that. But man, it's kind of suspicious. You know, and it sucks because literally the week before I had just gone on a podcast defending Embiid. And then, you know, I'm like, don't worry. He'll play in that game. And then of course he scratches and I'm like, all right, I can't defend him anymore.
Starting point is 00:36:00 I'm not gonna go out on the limb. Yeah. I mean, it's also just one of those things as fans you wanna see too. You know, like you want to see that like MVP race play out on the court and just be able to be like, oh great. We got to see them go up against each other. And now we have a little more data to begin the, you get the take machine going. And when the people were like, where's NB'd and he was like pointing to himself, I was like, this is not good. Dude, just go back to the locker room, man. This is like, this is embarrassing for all of us.
Starting point is 00:36:30 Hey man, but I always, I give him respect as a fellow Arsenal fan. You know, I'll be in your corner, Joel. You know, I'll be in your corner. Come to the Lakers. You said that you're no longer interested in signing Joel Embiid to the Lakers. Yeah, I mean, you know, like I said,
Starting point is 00:36:44 my fantasy is just go wherever the wind blows me So right now I'm like, I don't know maybe Luka, you know, yeah, maybe this Luka Donchich guy He might be he might he might have a case to who might not be a bad deal Jameson My good man. You've wandered into the rapid fire round of questions. We're just you've you've done this before. We're hitting you with some questions. Don't expand on your answers.
Starting point is 00:37:10 Give us quick responses right back to us. And if you take too long, we will be very rude and we are very impatient and we'll be very immature. But I know you can handle it because you're in Las Vegas dealing with people maybe as irrational as me. So I think you're prepared. Are you ready though? Yes. Okay. Jameson's ready. Brian start the clock.
Starting point is 00:37:32 Okay. Do you want to check? Should I go first or do you want to go first? You can, you can go man. That's cool. All right. Jameson, you can go back in time to personally Jamison you can go back in time to personally witness any of the following iconic moments the first one Magic's baby sky hook in the garden in 1987 and I will play the clips just to remind you of how beautiful these moments were Cooper takes the ball out of bounds baseline Karim and worthy to left worthy comesmon Worthy to the left. Worthy comes to the right. To the left goes Magic. He's got it.
Starting point is 00:38:06 He didn't shoot it. Five seconds left. Magic down the middle. Just what I thought. A hook shot at 12. Good! Two seconds left. The Lakers take the lead on Magic Johnson's
Starting point is 00:38:15 running sky hook. Hey Jack, that was you, Pat Riley. There he is. I mean, Adrian Brewer. What a head of hair on that guy. Man, Chick Hearn. Holy cow. Ah, I missed Chick. Okay. No! Opportunity number guy. Man, check her. I miss chick. Okay.
Starting point is 00:38:25 Opportunity number two. Yay! By the way, my six year old just saw the year 1980 something and he was like 1,980. I was like, man, I'm so. Sorry baby. The year I was born, man. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:38:42 There were numbers from then? Yeah, there were numbers from then. All right. Jamison moment to run our test. That three pointer in game seven against the Celtics straight into my veins. Brian looking, our chest, that's a three. No, no, no, yeah! Shout out to my therapist on that one. And then finally, Kobe Bryant, clutch finals performance after Shaq goes out game four in the 2000 finals.
Starting point is 00:39:14 Try to go against Rose now. Indiana has five fouls. The Pacers do not want to foul here, put Kobe on the line. Kobe fires the jumper and gives LA the lead. OK, so then here it is, Jamison, of those three moments in history, which one are you showing up to so you can witness personally with your eyes?
Starting point is 00:39:34 Well, I saw the last two, like, not only on TV. Yeah, yeah. But the first one, obviously I was really young. So I probably on that one, because I way more in tips because of where it was located at the history at the time, uh, the players are on the court. So I had to probably go back to that one. Yeah. I remember very vividly I watched the game in full, uh, the third one I had a lot of money on the line to that one.
Starting point is 00:40:01 So that one has special emphasis, but yeah, uh, yeah, I would probably go the first one. Yeah. Magic, baby skyhook in the garden. Yeah. All right. And that would I think you could give yourself a sports almanac and become like, oh, yeah, like in the future to Biff. Yeah, be Biff. Oh, all right. Face of the NBA for the next five years.
Starting point is 00:40:23 Could it be me? I? Don't play basketball, but I don't not off the table not have this podcast No face the NBA for the next five years or do you think it is or faces? Yeah, the personality with the game well, there's guys that are just as talented But the personality that goes with the game and the swag, it's in. Yeah. Can we come up with a better nickname for him? I feel like somebody was pointing out on Twitter and this has been a frequent
Starting point is 00:40:53 thing. Like people were like, what happened to NBA nicknames on Reddit three years ago? Someone was like, Kemp was Rain Man, Peyton Glove, Dominique, the human highlight film, Barkleyley the round mound of rebound Michael Jordan air Jordan like these are great poetic nicknames and now it's like Anthony Edwards Well, the first three letters of his name is aunt. Okay. Okay. We'll call him Ant Man like what about this Tony? No, man, that's just like a normal nickname No, man, that's just like a normal nickname. All right. All right. All right. All right. What about it? And so what about a e? The reason why we don't have great names anymore is because we know these guys
Starting point is 00:41:35 from when they're like 15 years old. So there's no mystery anymore. We just call them by their name or call whatever nickname they already had. But we've known that we've seen them do a you seem to do high school. There's no more intrigue anymore. Back in the day when Sean Kent was talking to everybody, that was the first time you saw it when you got the NBA. We see all these hot these guys were 14, 15 years old. Right.
Starting point is 00:41:55 So there's no more mystery entry to them. So it's just what it is. But do you do you personally miss like a good nickname or you're just like, it's fine. Let's call him and let's call him a whatever. Yeah, I do. I do miss a good nickname. However, the issue is this, the people are creating nicknames that shouldn't be doing it. We need people who are cool and have swag doing it. Not people trying to be cool and go viral.
Starting point is 00:42:16 Why is it right? And big like, you know, then they lane with that and I think that's a big issue that we have on social media when it comes to basketball you know, basketball and whatnot. Like some of that, like Barkley being the round mound of rebound, like that is too sweaty for that to work today. Like granted it's a lot of fun, but it only was possible because there were like the beat reporter for the
Starting point is 00:42:42 Sixers was like, I came up with this and I'm going to keep repeating it until everybody else does you know like there was it's like that old media model whereas now like I don't think you get the round mound of rebound started no no no no you can't you can't do like nicknames that sound like intro bar and like a sugar hill gang rap song It's like at the round mound a rebound it's like no Yeah, we need some that's what we need we gotta we gotta go to the next we need we need something we need bars Okay, when it comes to these nicknames, so yeah, the the challenge is out there We need bars. Okay when it comes to these nicknames, so yeah, the the challenge is out there
Starting point is 00:43:33 Alright, so James the next question Barclays Hall of Fame career or former guest the Mad Boosties Robert or ease Hall of Fame career But I would take Barclays career by even living team made a lot of money still making a lot of money He's he's just he's just about a lot of money, still making a lot of money. He's just the kind of famous you want to be. People know you but don't know too much about you. I think that's always cool. But no, Barkley, yeah. Barkley at one point in time was the top of the NBA. And that was never the case for Robert Ory. He had a hell of a career, did what he did.
Starting point is 00:44:01 But I will tell you, Barkley's career 10 out of 10 times. Yeah. And we did, of course, say Robert Ory is Hall of Famer. He's not in the basketball Hall of Fame, but he's in the much more important Miles and Jack, I'm at Booste's Hall of Fame. All right. That's going to do it for this Best of episode. We thank you for tuning in and we will see you next week. What's up, everyone? It's Justin Penick from John Boy Media, the host of the Football Today podcast with Bobby
