Starting point is 00:00:00 I'm Dr. Laurie Santos, host of the Happiness Lab podcast. As the U.S. elections approach, it can feel like we're angrier and more divided than ever. But in a new, hopeful season of my podcast, I'll share what the science really shows, that we're surprisingly more united than most people think. We all know something is wrong in our culture, in our politics, and that we need to do better and that we can do better. Listen on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you listen to podcasts. Hey, fam, I'm Simone Boyce. I'm Danielle Robay. And we're the hosts of The Bright Side,

Not a standard episode of the show. These are our year-end, year-end review and holiday-themed episodes. So if you're new to the show, and holiday themed episodes so if you're new to the show uh you know you can check back in the catalog uh for what the normal episodes sound like uh and you can listen to this for our thoughts on the year uh and we're back beginning of january with all new episodes i can't wait to talk to y'all then. Hi. Hello, the internet, and welcome to this special year in review, year end.
Starting point is 00:02:49 Daily Zeitgeist. The Daily Zeitgeist! Sorry. Sorry about that. It's the holidays, man. It's the holidays. It's the holidays, you know. Shaking off some cobwebs.
Starting point is 00:03:01 I'm Jack. That's Miles. We are joined by super producers. DJ Daniel. That's me. It's I. Anna Hosnier. Hi.
Starting point is 00:03:17 There she is. There she is. She's entered. There she is. Anna has entered the chat. Hi. Yeah, hi. All right. So this one is like the sort of thing that I love that is really self-indulgent.
Starting point is 00:03:32 And I'm appreciating you guys bearing with me here. Okay, I'm going to go on mute then. So basically, I'm looking for a trend of the year. We're talking about trends this year. A trend that encapsulated the year. And just to give a couple examples of ones from the past that make a lot of sense to me. So somebody was saying in a book I was reading, because I read books, that the 21st century's central metaphor is asymmetric warfare, both with 9-11, but that's also what Republicans do. That's what the tech industry has done, too.
Starting point is 00:04:17 Our society has come from the outside, used unexpected means to attack uh the the rules and you know break things down um and then the classic example that you know i love to talk about is quicksand um great so quicksand being like a central trope of tv shows and movies in the 50s 60ss, 70s, and slowly everyone realized that quicksand didn't exist, and it was just something that manifested itself into movies and TV shows as sort of this metaphoric touchstone that made sense that I guess people referred to Martin Luther King Jr. referred to racism as a quicksand, an American quicksand. The Vietnam War was referred to as a quicksand. When the astronauts were going to the moon,
Starting point is 00:05:17 one of the questions that was asked them from a journalist was, are you afraid that the moon is quicksand? Because people were just obsessed with quicksand even though it didn't really exist and it was just it was just this thing that everybody felt like america was in quicksand and therefore uh it just like manifested itself outward. So I want to find something stupid like that, that is defining and central to our culture. And then I also just want to look at overall trends since we're at the end of the year.
Starting point is 00:05:54 This is when like people are like the trend of 2020 that we all saw get and get you guys' thoughts on, on trends we saw. Right. Hell yeah. Hell yeah. Hell yeah. I mean, isn't quicksand still pretty relevant in a weird way? Oh, for sure.
Starting point is 00:06:10 Like this appearance of something, but it actually will consume you. Right. I mean, I think it's just like a constant, but it feels so right and apt, too, of like America as quicksand in general. Yeah, and I think there's also- Yeah, I want to go there, and it's like, oh, it'll fucking just destroy you if you look or live a certain way, or are a certain way.
Starting point is 00:06:31 I feel like IEDs is more appropriate, like as a thing that we step on, and it immediately destroys you, and the consequences are immediate, whereas quicksand, I feel like there was still some hopefulness that like, yeah, we're stuck in the quicksand, but somebody's going to throw us a vine
Starting point is 00:06:45 and like let us pull ourselves out. So even though it feels like we're being slowed down or dragged into a quagmire, we're all good. Can I do my impression of stepping into quicksand? Hell yeah. All right. Mm-hmm. That's weird.
Starting point is 00:07:06 Oh. Wait. Are you going lower? The fuck? My Nikes. My Nikes. No. It's up to your shins now.
Starting point is 00:07:15 What? Jack said this wasn't real. Oh, what the fuck is this bullshit? Mom! And thank you everyone for coming to the memorial service for Anna Hosnier she asked that I play that clip for everybody of her last moments
Starting point is 00:07:31 and Jack I think specifically she wanted you to live with that for the rest of your life thank you so much there will be refreshments in the lobby now let's all go around and do help help I'm in quicksand Let's all go around and do... Help! Help! I'm in quicksand!
Starting point is 00:07:49 This shit's slow! Call the full sand! It's actually a good bit to just walk around in a public place and shout that and see how many people turn and come running. How about myself? Oh shit, quicksand! A single adult man at a fucking playground goes into a sandbox and goes, Help! I'm in quicksand! A single adult man at a fucking playground goes into a
Starting point is 00:08:06 sandbox and goes, Help! Quicksand! Help! I like the idea of I have some time though. No rush though! It's going slowly.
Starting point is 00:08:20 It's actually not that big of a deal. The other big thing about the quicksand metaphor is the more you struggle, worse it gets stay calm like uh that that notion i think had something to do with um probably an american hope that we we shouldn't be protesting the vietnam war or racism that all that struggle is just making it worse uh oh god just just go with it yeah just go with it guys just ask for help from just be docile england uh all right so a couple things that jumped out to me first of all the phrase that we uttered so often on daily zeitgeist it's what it's or it is what it is um what did you think i was gonna say
Starting point is 00:09:07 in these trying times yeah oh yeah now more than ever now more than ever now more than ever the knock-on effects um but i feel like it is what it is was everywhere i mean it's been around obviously but i just feel like it came to the forefront this year as we resigned ourselves to a fate of consequences for decisions of other people and waiting to just see how bad it was going to get. Yeah. The undercurrent of that statement truly is this state of resignation that we're truly out of control. It truly is this state of resignation that we're truly out of control. And that's the only way to deal with this, is to just say, well, I can't resist this reality
Starting point is 00:09:50 because it is what it is, and I have no choice but to exist within it. Yeah, it's like if the quicksand metaphor, the person just was like, yeah, I'm fucked. I'll just go down slowly don't bother um yeah i mean it is just like a nonsense phrase that like for all intents and purposes shouldn't like be useful at all because it's stating a tautology and that makes it all the more quicksand like in that it shouldn't be useful but we're constantly
Starting point is 00:10:26 using it especially this year yeah it applies in so many ways i mean like i think you know michelle obama everyone started it went viral after the dnc speech or i think it was around that time when she used that to talk about donald trump as president but like even in general like more than trump just the the the state of being an American right now is truly like one where you are now just having to look at how fucked up it is and we've run out of like excuses or ways to distract yourself or like there's shitty veneer of what it means to be an exceptional American and now it's like oh fuck man yeah i guess it is what it is this is a shithole yeah i feel like that it could almost be viewed as the other side of the coin of uh daniel's phrase uh
Starting point is 00:11:14 now more than ever because it is what it is recognizes that this uh you know year that we were trapped inside 2020 was a a continuation of what it had been you know and what it continues to be whereas now more than ever uh was like the central uh you know assumption of the neoliberal like cultural like mainstream where it's like this is just a speed bump, guys. We can get through this together. And by together, hopefully you have incorporated or LLC as you're listening. Right. Yeah. So let's take a quick break and we'll be right back with another trend. This summer, the nation watched as the Republican nominee for president was the target of two assassination attempts separated by two months.
Starting point is 00:12:13 These events were mirrored nearly 50 years ago when President Gerald Ford faced two attempts on his life in less than three weeks. President Gerald R. Ford came stunningly close to being the victim of an assassin today. And these are the only two times we know of that a woman has tried to assassinate a U.S. president. One was the protege of infamous cult leader Charles Manson. I always felt like Lynette was kind of his right-hand woman. The other, a middle-aged housewife working undercover for the FBI in a violent revolutionary underground. Identified by police as Sarah Jean Moore. The story of one strange and violent summer.
Starting point is 00:12:52 This is Rip Current. Available now with new episodes every Thursday. Listen on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. I've been thinking about you. I want you back in my life. It's too late for that. I have a proposal for you. Come up here and document my project.
Starting point is 00:13:14 All you need to do is record everything like you always do. One session. 24 hours. EPM 110. 120. She's terrified Should we wake her up? Absolutely not
Starting point is 00:13:27 What was that? You didn't figure it out? I think I need to hear you say it That was live audio of a woman's nightmare This machine is approved and everything? You're allowed to be doing this? We passed the review board a year ago We're not hurting people
Starting point is 00:13:44 There's nothing dangerous about what you're doing You're allowed to be doing this? We passed the review board a year ago. We're not hurting people. There's nothing dangerous about what you're doing. They're just dreams. Dream Sequence is a new horror thriller from Blumhouse Television, iHeartRadio, and Realm. Listen to Dream Sequence on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. In a galaxy far, far away. No, babe, that's taken. We're in our own world, remember?
Starting point is 00:14:13 Right. In our own world, we're two space cadets and totally normal humans. Sure, totally normal humans. Embark on a journey across the stars, discovering the wonders of the universe one episode at a time. We'll talk about life, love, laughter, and why you should never argue with your co-pilot. Especially when she's always right. Right.
Starting point is 00:14:34 And if we hit turbulence, just blame it on Mercury retrograde. Or Emily's questionable space piloting skills. Hey! Join us on In Our Own World for cosmic conversations, stellar laughs, and super corny dad jokes. Listen to In Our Own World as a part of the My Cultura podcast network available on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. And don't worry, we promise to avoid any black holes. Most of the time.
Starting point is 00:15:02 Do you ever wonder where your favorite foods come from? Like what's the history behind bacon-wrapped hot dogs? Hi, I'm Eva Longoria. Hi, I'm Maite Gomez-Rejon. Our podcast, Hungry for History, is back. Season two. Season two. Are we recording? Are we good? Oh, we push record, right?
Starting point is 00:15:19 Okay. And this season, we're taking an even bigger bite out of the most delicious food and its history Saying that the most popular cocktail is the margarita Followed by the mojito from Cuba And the piña colada from Puerto Rico So all of these we have, we thank Latin culture There's a mention of blood sausage in Homer's Odyssey
Starting point is 00:15:39 That dates back to the 9th century B.C. B.C.? I didn't realize how old the hot dog was. Listen to Hungry for History as part of the My Cultura podcast network, available on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. And we're back. and we're back and um as we mentioned i think in another episode uh oh yeah it was the streaming content episode the the fact that the val uh was so huge and also tiger king which i think was sneaky occult show uh that i just think cults are a pretty great metaphor for like not even metaphor
Starting point is 00:16:29 just like a thing that keeps uh cropping up in in our culture um whether it be nexium doc what's his face i can't get that guy's doc doc anton. Doc Anton. Doc Anton's cult, or Joe Exotic's whack, kind of half-assed cult, or Carol Baskin's. People just dying, just being so thirsty for being part of something larger than themselves in our hyper-individualistic culture, I think. And the way that cults and also like multi-level marketing groups
Starting point is 00:17:09 like feed on that and it makes it sort of the organization of our time. Can I do my impression of being in a cult? Yes, please. Okay. Thank you. Oh, hey guys. can I do my impression of being in a cult yes please thank you hey guys I sent the zoom for the TDZ recording
Starting point is 00:17:32 and that's it damn I'm sorry so what's that make Psyche Psyche is our loyal followers I guess I don't know I mean listen how Jack talks are we not in a cult Psygangs are loyal followers, I guess. I don't know. It's your leader. I mean, listen to how Jack talks.
Starting point is 00:17:48 Are we not in a cult? We're like, yes, yes, yes, yes. Go on, go on about the quicksand metaphor. No, we're too independent for it to be a cult, unfortunately. Yeah. Yeah, just straight up be like, nah, to that. We definitely don't have cult vibes. Yeah. Not at all.
Starting point is 00:18:08 We exercise a lot of agency on this show, for sure. Although that would be interesting of what would that cult look like. Just at the same time, remember there's currently a sale on TeePublic, so make sure you get your Daily Zeitgeist cult merch. Or you will not make it to the mothership. Hashtag psych. Brand yourself. Unfortunately, cults need a charismatic leader.
Starting point is 00:18:32 Oh. I think. Oh, that's right. So Miles is Keith Raniere. And Jack is. I'm the guy who died. What's the woman? I'm Cardinal Richelieu.
Starting point is 00:18:43 And Jack is Louis XIV. Or no, or it's Jack is Rajneeshi, and Miles is Sheila. Or I could also see it as Jack being, what's the woman? Kathy? No, Salzman. Nancy Salzman. Same vibe, Kathy. Nancy Salzman is Jack.
Starting point is 00:19:05 Miles is Keith Raniere. Which one's Nancy? Oh, Saul's Nancy Salzman. Same vibe. Kathy Nancy Salzman is Jack. Miles is Keith Raniere. Which was Nancy's. Oh, OK. Just the one who creates all the. The courses, the face, but then Miles is the one really pulling the strings without all the disturbing other accusations. I don't know. Look, I'm just trying to cultify us all. Well, yeah, we're trying. We're trying to figure it out in real time with everybody the other one trend i i just want
Starting point is 00:19:30 to just point out um just because i think it's appropriate to this show um so many celebrity podcasts yeah i think it's the big one of the biggest content trends of this entire year uh i mean obviously we we have a huge hand in a lot of them but like it's interesting how this entire year just turned a lot of people into suddenly respecting the medium or being like yeah it's worth fucking the podcast now yeah right because like oh shit you can make stuff without going to a studio and captivate the world yes celebrities follow our lead and we will take you to the promised land um yeah for sure there's quite a few i feel like they're coming around to the idea that like it it can't just be celebrity talks to people like it no yeah a little bit more give us something new that's why i'm not i'm uh no joke i've been dming dX on Instagram yeah because I feel like
Starting point is 00:20:26 DMX there was some kind of hilarious DMX podcast I would be like yo what is this yeah overrated trend I was gonna say just any white collar gauge of
Starting point is 00:20:42 ordinary Americans so like the stock market supposedly being a reflection of the economy polls supposedly being a reflection of how people are thinking about an upcoming election both just ate
Starting point is 00:20:58 solid shit this year love that I mean you know your boy's got a trend speaking of things that people are coming around to let's hear it i have never seen more people go from i don't do that to i just spent 150 hours playing animal crossing on my brand new nintendo switch that's right baby we spent all this time inside and everybody said, you know what? Video games might actually be kind of chill
Starting point is 00:21:27 and not super lame for losers like DJ Daniel. And I said, thank you for finally realizing that. Hey, for losers, bro. If we're losers, how come we win in every game we play? That's right. Fuck out of here. There's no actual proof of that.
Starting point is 00:21:39 Actually, I lose online very consistently, to be honest. Anytime I lose a start, Isabella, I cry a little bit more inside. No, but I mean, at the same time, I am thrilled that people have found connection, but also truly something to do and seeing video games as a, you know, a fine use of their time and realizing that while video games have this image of your Call of Duties, your Halos, your FIFAs, there is a community of people that have grabbed onto Animal Crossing New Horizons
Starting point is 00:22:06 and seen the light of just like, it's more than just these very standard activities and like giving people something to hold on to and build community around. Yeah. I mean, I texted with Anna, she's trying to get me in the Animal Crossing and I'm like, well, what are the schemes?
Starting point is 00:22:20 She comes to the turnip market and she's telling me all about your text threads with turnip sales but i'm not like i i like animal crossing because it's cute as fuck i'm not interested in playing any more games i'll tell you that right now oh so you're a one so you're only about the crossing that's fine that's totally fine my mom has gotten into words with friends like wild and now she's all right all right that's just an app it's just i don't consider that right that's how it starts baby and then she said i won 38 games in a row dan and i'm having such a good time grinding
Starting point is 00:22:53 and i'm like that's my mom's right there competitive gamer she's out here i need a ludo shooter next she's uh she's a woman in her prime playing, like, word games. I wouldn't say she's a gamer. I think she's doing what naturally you do. Well, I think what you're saying, though, Anna, is you're putting a specific description on what it means to be a gamer rather than someone who's literally engaging in playing a game. No, no, no, no, no. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:23:19 Gamer gatekeeper. Gamer culture. No, no, no. Gamers gatekeep gamer culture. So I'm trying to. First of all, don't you take my I don culture. No, no, no. Gamers gatekeep gamer culture. So I'm trying to. First of all, don't you take my I don't think so, honey. Because this is literally my I don't think so, honey about gaming. But we don't need to go there right now.
Starting point is 00:23:32 We got the Las Colteristas spinoff right now. Okay. Anyway, video games are good. And I'm glad people have connected to them. End of line. Yeah, I love them. I can't get. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:23:44 Her Majesty is still. I'm having trouble getting her in the games. I think Animal Crossing might do. End of line. Yeah, I love them. I can't get, I don't know if, Her Majesty is still, I'm having trouble getting her in the games. I think Animal Crossing might do it. Just start with Valley. Yo, we were fucking around with Fall Guys. Oh, hell yeah. And then like once she got through like the first two, she was like, oh, you suck at this.
Starting point is 00:23:57 And I was like, fine, we don't got to play this all the time. But still looking for more games to play. Indeed. My partner as well has now, every time she plays Fall Guys, she says, so do you think I could beat you now? And I'm like looking for more games to play. Indeed. My partner as well has now, every time she plays Fall Guys, she says, so do you think I could beat you now? And I'm like, maybe.
Starting point is 00:24:10 Depends on the level. I have a culture. Yeah, hit me. Bubble culture. Bubble. Bubble culture? Bubble culture. Just how bubbles, all bubble everything?
Starting point is 00:24:23 Just, no, like you got to get in a bubble. Like what? Like the NBA bubble? The Bachelor bubble? Yeah. If you want to do something, got to get a bubble. Bubble culture. You want to...
Starting point is 00:24:35 I know people call it pods as well. They call it pod culture when you create a pod. But no, those are bubbles. Wait, but you're saying with the... What's a pod? Like a pod is the crew of people you're saying, like, look, if we're going to interact, these are the only, we only fuck with each other. You fuck with only each other.
Starting point is 00:24:51 Yeah. How big is a pod? How big of a pod? How big a pod? I'm not really even in the pod. No, I don't have a pod because no one likes me, but like. It could be like a wedding's worth of people, you know, something like that. No, no, no, no, no, no.
Starting point is 00:25:03 I mean, when I went on my flight down to Cancun, I'm like, hey, we a pod, right? They're like, yeah. And I'm like, see that pod gang, we here. Shots, shots, shots, shots, shots. A pod is like, you know, like maybe like, yeah, one or two other families. Right.
Starting point is 00:25:21 So your kids can have like human interaction. Yeah, like I have nieces and nephews that are like involved in that too. other families right where so your kids can have like human interaction yeah my like i've yeah nieces and nephews that are like involved in that too because i totally get that especially for kids to be like yeah here then they there's people outside of the home they get to see with some semblance of the old world but shout outs to the bubbles when they work because you see what happens when you don't do it right it turns into a fucking mess yeah um the nba nailed the bubble although i was gonna say like off-season sports was sort of a uh i i guess the seasonality of sports was more important to me than i realized like some of the things that happened like i was
Starting point is 00:26:01 i was all in on major league baseball because it was happening like the world series was happening when the world series normally happens like the nba felt a little bit off and like the ratings were way down they tried to do the masters golf tournament which i'd never watch but apparently that was like half the ratings it usually is because it was uh in the wrong time and it's usually like right around, and same with the Kentucky Derby. So yeah, sports being sort of a rhythmic thing that we just kind of have going on in the background of our lives as opposed to just a thing that...
Starting point is 00:26:39 I assumed once they brought sports back, it was just going to be like a fucking bull rush to everybody watch it and just be distracted, but it wasn't quite. I think the downfall of golf in golf bubble was that there wasn't that very light smathering of clapping. That's the thing. You got to get that energy.
Starting point is 00:27:00 And then on top of that, it's all outside, so you can't have giant screens with like people on Zooms on. Right. Whenever they see there's like the cameras on them, they're like. They're trying to settle everyone else in the gallery. It's like you're in your bathroom on a laptop, my man. So what's the point, you know? your bathroom on a laptop my man so yeah what's the point you know family sport it's it's a double edged sword because like on one hand you know the nba postseason was it had a completely different
Starting point is 00:27:31 texture and intensity to it because of the situation which i definitely enjoyed but yeah it it it's sort of a different version of what you're used to and if you're not like flexible enough and how you're consuming i can see see how people were put off. I'm like, oh yeah, right. It's on. It's kind of not the same. Sorry. I enjoyed it as much, if not more, like the NBA this year. It was super dope. It was. It was amazing.
Starting point is 00:27:56 The players were super locked in. The level of playing was kind of next level. It was March Madness shit. It was super dope. It was March Madness shit. Or the defense was slightly worse. But yeah, it was super dope. It felt like, yeah. It seemed like people needed the rhythm. It also felt very unproblematic to watch,
Starting point is 00:28:13 the fact that they took the right precautions instead of like, even, you know, regardless of your thoughts on the NFL, I would even feel weird watching a Dallas Cowboys game and seeing half the stadium full. Right.
Starting point is 00:28:24 Like that has to, I the stadium full. That has to detract from the experience. I know it's different because football requires such a bigger field than basketball does. It's a lot easier to contain it small and indoors like that. I don't know. It just felt easy to watch basketball. They're not really keeping everybody in a bubble.
Starting point is 00:28:40 No, not at all. You watch the NFL and you're like, is everybody going to be okay after this game? Three of those players have COVID. When you're watching the NBA, you're like, well, damn, at least I know they're hermetically sealed in this bubble. Tested every day.
Starting point is 00:28:56 Although I feel like a disconnect from the danger the athletes are in is priced into a lot of NFL fandom, unfortunately. Just sorry, real quick. the danger the athletes are in is like priced into a lot of nfl fandom unfortunately yeah um just sorry real quick i i uh on the cult thing i forgot to mention the main reason cults which were trending which is that the donald trump like his support basically turned into a straight up death cult uh yeah this year especially because when they're like all right here are the stakes you could die of covet 19 they're like okay cool so what do we do they're
Starting point is 00:29:28 like oh i'm sorry i said the risk involved is you could die uh-huh uh-huh but what about trump though what's great where to rally at oh shit okay it's like um all right well that's some big energy big energy yeah and i feel like we're gonna see until this is like fixed and we have more uh healthy forms of like group consciousness i feel like we're gonna see people able to uh you know take advantage of that absence in american life um until until it's fixed basically um uh all right let's take another quick break, and we'll come back with just a few more trends. This summer, the nation watched
Starting point is 00:30:17 as the Republican nominee for president was the target of two assassination attempts separated by two months. These events were mirrored nearly 50 years ago when President Gerald Ford faced two attempts on his life in less than three weeks. President Gerald R. Ford came stunningly close to being the victim of an assassin today.
Starting point is 00:30:37 And these are the only two times we know of that a woman has tried to assassinate a U.S. president. One was the protege of infamous cult leader Charles Manson. I always felt like Lynette was kind of his right-hand woman. The other, a middle-aged housewife working undercover for the FBI in a violent revolutionary underground. Daniel Thrasher, Peppermint, Morgan Jay, and more. You got to watch us. No, you mean you have to listen to us. I mean, you can still watch us, but you got to listen. Like if you're watching us, you have to tell us,
Starting point is 00:33:57 like if you're out the window, you have to say, hey, I'm watching you outside of the window. Just, just, you know what? Listen to the Amber and Lacey, Lacey and Amber show on Will Ferrell's Big Money Players Network on the iHeartRad the iheart radio app apple podcast or wherever you get your podcasts and we're back and hey guys, guys, what about Karen's? Am I right? What? Oh, shit. These ladies.
Starting point is 00:34:32 Here's a disturbing trend. Cancel culture. What is going on? Thank you. Thank you. No, the only other thing I had was. So the song You're Welcome from the Moana movie uh moana from the disney movie moana from from the moana movie disney right uh is not obviously something that came out this year it did hit quadruple platinum this year um and i don't know that something about that, that the fact that that song is constantly playing in my household.
Starting point is 00:35:06 And then Alec Baldwin, uh, at the end of the first SNL after the election held up a sign that said, you're welcome on it. Uh, like, yeah, I did that.
Starting point is 00:35:19 You're right. You guys are welcome. Uh, you guys are welcome uh just struck me as like the perfect encapsulation of the big dumb old white guy just fucking saying you're welcome uh right to a thing that nobody's trying to thank no you actually broke everything right yeah and you're just you're commandeering the phrase like yeah you're welcome dude i did that like you have you ruined it the house i mean trump's energy is all big fat guys saying you're welcome america for the vaccine for the racism for the greatest economy in the world uh and it's just yeah he's well you know he's he's he's got to find those achievements somewhere
Starting point is 00:36:04 even if you're quite literally just saying you're welcome for a thing that didn't happen like just to be like it's like oh the presence of the phrase might indicate there is something to give have gratitude for right yeah that would kind of fuck you if someone no context came in and just said hey man you're welcome that would fuck me up for what because we hold on what hey you're welcome. That would fuck me up. For what? Hold on, what? Hey, you're welcome. You're welcome. Did I buy something from you? Let's put it this way, man.
Starting point is 00:36:32 You're fucking welcome, bro. It's an unsettling phrase without context. Yeah, yeah, totally. I mean, I guess it goes back to even the W days when Will Ferrell had the one man show called You're Welcome America. like crystallized and literally asking people to be nicer to him and saying that he deserved praise for like everything good that america had ever done yeah um so yeah just keeps getting dumber i mean what's like it's just sort of like that uh yeah they're like white male privilege sort of just creates this like lens that they look at life through where everything they did was to
Starting point is 00:37:24 like actually was sick as fuck and helped other people are out or like they should be thanking me for doing this shit when a lot of the times you look at what they're doing or what their record is in terms of a government or administration like this is not really helpful for anyone aside for a few people but it's just like this idea like yeah dude i did that and i'm not going to be very self-critical or self-analytical about any of this because because you're welcome. Yeah. And I feel like it's also the energy you run into anytime you try to criticize the Democratic Party or anytime you are critical of capitalism. They're like, yeah, but the market really drives all the progress. So you just don't know how thankful you should be to us. It's also the energy you get from people within the Trump administration who are like, I'm just here to stop worse stuff from happening.
Starting point is 00:38:11 You should be thanking me type type shit. What else? Anybody have any other trends they want to call out before we break for the day? There was this trend where we all had to wear masks. Yeah, masks. Remember that? That was so dumb when people were doing that shit. You know what?
Starting point is 00:38:33 On that note, I have had one mask that I wash over and over that I love so much and that mask was made for me by one Anna Hosnier. And I am eternally grateful. I love so much. And that mask was made for me by one Anna Hosnier. Yeah, totally. Eternally.
Starting point is 00:38:49 Loki, she bought them shits on this. I got them all from China. I am eternally grateful for that mask. It is well put together. It covers my entire face, and I'm very thankful for it, Anna. Mine is so good. Somebody asked me if it was versace are you serious that pattern the guy was like is versace and i'm like no it's a handmade gift from
Starting point is 00:39:12 from the homie i still have the masks that uh i made for you jack sitting on my counter oh for sarah yeah yeah oh yeah it's funny like one day when you get the vaccine you'll get them one day when you get the vaccine and you can see people in public you'll grab them for me exactly hey we'll still need masks even with the vaccine though i still rock mine that's true day to day there you go um yeah uh overrated trend gratitude gratitude. Fuck that. Actually, Anna, you're welcome. You're welcome for wearing the one that you made me. Yeah, no problem. How often do y'all wash your masks?
Starting point is 00:39:55 Not enough. Just so you're like, okay, I need to wash this motherfucker. Or do you have a set day for mask washing? I don't go out that much, so it's basically every time I go out and use it, I throw it in the wash. Oh, shit. I do the half-ass thing of Lysol-ing.
Starting point is 00:40:12 I Lysol the outside, I Lysol the outside, then I leave it hang next to the window. Okay. I mean, good UV light helps. It's very half-ass. It's more like the dried-up spit that kind of fucks with you. When it starts to smell like bad breath, that's when you...
Starting point is 00:40:28 For me, that's after about 15 minutes of wear. Yeah, if I have coffee and I smoke a blunt or something, I'm like, I gotta throw this motherfucker away. I also have these disposable white ones that you know it's time to stop wearing it when you can see dirt on it. Oh yeah. It looks like a makeup wipe. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:40:49 Yeah. All right. Let's, uh, let's end it there and we will be back tomorrow or, uh, soon whenever the next weekday is, that is not a,
Starting point is 00:41:04 uh, holiday. And we will talk to you all then. Thanks for listening. Hope you're having a great break. Bye. Bye. Hey, guys, quick thing. I'm Dr. Laurie Santos, host of the Happiness Lab podcast.
