Starting point is 00:02:02 Hello, the internet, and welcome to season 262 episode 5 of their daily zeitgeist production of iheart radio this is a podcast where we take a deep dive into america's consciousness deep into it's friday november 11th 2022 11 11 veterans day you know that i do know that was it the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month? I used to play so many Veterans Day things at Forest Lawn Memorial because I was a school band. Also, National Sunday Day. I feel like they missed it. It's Sunday Day?
Starting point is 00:02:37 Yeah, I mean for an ice cream sundae. Sunday, okay. Yeah, yeah. That would be wild. They should have put that on a sundae. Right. But anyways, it's good. Friday is a good day for ice cream sundays you know shout out to all the veterans out there and yeah my kids are home from school so it's it is veterans day in this household hey
Starting point is 00:02:58 did you ever did you get i i didn't really get veterans day off until the high school i went to and it was like a one-off once, I remember. No, it wasn't there. I'm here for it. I mean, kids need rest. I think that's the one thing that we want. I'm here for any day off. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:03:13 That's why I was like, All Saints Day? Like, went on to a Catholic high school? I'm like, fuck yes. All the saints. All of them. Please. And 11 plus 11 equals 22. 11, 11 equals 22. 11, 11, 22. So, I mean, there's like probably some numerology shit that your local numerologist would be happy to talk to you about.
Starting point is 00:03:32 Yeah. Robin from the rehearsal. Reach out to him. National Robin Day. Ended up on upright on miracle status. Anyways, my name's Jack O'Brien, a.k.a aka Crispity Crunchity Apples Jack. That is courtesy of my dumb brain. Shout out to the listeners who chimed in sharing your truth that you actually like mush apples or that some people were like, yeah, my significant other likes red delicious apples. That's a real problem. I don't know. I can't deal. But I do want to shout
Starting point is 00:04:10 out Cassie who said, I'm so sorry to report that I'm a soft apple stand. In fact, I get an apple that is too hard, I punch it. If I get an apple that is too hard, I punch it. Something I've done since I was a kid. Saying it out loud now, it's embarrassing. I don't think you should be embarrassed. Do your truth. If your preferred version, your platonic ideal of an apple is just a bag of applesauce in an apple skin bag, good for you. You do you. I'm glad to know that y'all exist. The punching is interesting though. Yeah. I mean, look, I'm not going to psychoanalyze that exist. The punching is interesting, though. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:46 I mean, look, I'm not going to psychoanalyze that. But you know what? Go ahead. You know, as long as they are the right texture for you, get it how you need. I did start psychoanalyzing all these people in my head. I was like, I bet they had at a young age an apple that wasn't ripe yet. And that, like, fucked them for crispy apples forever. Because now they're like, the only safe apple is a apple that yields to my teeth immediately anyways i'm thrilled to be joined as always by my co-host mr miles gray
Starting point is 00:05:13 it's miles gray and i'm sorry but if you never check out they'll never know just what your card's worth panic will guide your bones. Oh, wait. Home. And ignite your bones. And I will try to find my wallet. That's based on the terrible experience of forgetting your wallet at the grocery store. Do you put stuff back or do you just ditch the cart and vanish? A journey guided along by a Coldplay song. Another one that I don't know. I'm starting to feel like maybe I just don't like Coldplay or have managed to.
Starting point is 00:06:13 This is one of the most overused. For me, I really wasn't knowing what Coldplay was really till this song. And then I was like, oh, this song that's in every promo package for like a sporting event they always use it at the end with the lights will never mind anyway we're doing the same conversation we did when i did the this ak last time shout out to eric pierogi was this another call is this the same coldplay song a new ak same song you okay i was lying when i said i was gonna go listen to it. I apologize. Miles, we are thrilled to be joined in our third seat by a very funny stand-up comic writer, actor, and host of the new podcast, Parenting is a Joke.
Starting point is 00:06:54 Please welcome to the show, Ophira Eisenberg! Ophira! Hello, Miles and Jack. Welcome. Welcome. I have a hardcore, hardcore crunchy apple stance. Yeah. As I said it,
Starting point is 00:07:09 I was like, you know, that's the apple industry is going to be very pleased with that. Hard to the core. The core can be soft, but that outside better be crunchy. Yeah. But my apple people,
Starting point is 00:07:19 what happened to you? Yeah. That is deep trauma. In your mind, a soft apple would immediately signal to my brain something is wrong with this yeah like i don't continue a bite when the first one isn't like if it's like i'm like yeah and if you are hitting your fruit you need to take a deeper dive into your psyche of what that's about i actually appreciate appreciate that because I have like weird food rituals
Starting point is 00:07:45 that I can't think of right now. But like I could totally, if I was into soft apples, I would be doing that. I actually feel like it's not out of anger. It's just to like get the food exactly how you want it. And you haven't like refined the process
Starting point is 00:08:00 since childhood when first you're like, I punch it. Right. You're like, that works actually yeah yeah well fear where are you coming to us from i'm coming to you from brooklyn new york okay hotbed of uh hotbed of fun it's good hotbed of fun and i'm hearing some sirens in the background oh yeah you know they're i i like hermetically seal every opening of this entire apartment, yet still. Yeah, right.
Starting point is 00:08:28 It's like always an ambulance. No, let the Brooklyn in, you know? I feel like if we were cutting to you in a Marvel movie and it's like, how do we let them know that she's in Brooklyn? This is truly Gotham City. This is the bed that they would use. Also, I feel like because I'm in Brooklyn, I'm truly Gotham city. This is truly Gotham city. They would use. Also, I feel like because I'm in Brooklyn, I'm just surrounded by podcasters.
Starting point is 00:08:49 I'm sure every single person here is like, yeah, yeah. It is funny. Yeah. How often we're like, where are you? I'm like Brooklyn.
Starting point is 00:08:56 We're like, okay. Notice that. Yeah. Yeah, exactly. I wonder if anyone's ever been listening to a podcast recorded in Brooklyn and heard another podcast.
Starting point is 00:09:07 They listen to bleeding in through the wall. Like, oh, wait a second. Y'all live next to each other. Yes, it's happened to me. I was talking to someone on a podcast because just like you heard an ambulance, it was like just a really loud motorcycle. But we both heard it. We're like, oh, where do you live? And it was within the block. Oh, OK. We're like, we could have met in person but no right right right yeah there'll be some fan who's like trying to hear the same siren and it's like based on the doppler effect
Starting point is 00:09:34 from this recording in that one i have and what i've seen from radio calls around there yeah it's this intersection it's like the scene in fugitive where they're like analyzing the phone call like i could definitely see a podcast fan like triangulating location with that sort of science yeah absolutely if hey if we have the kind of parasocial relationships i think we do all right ophira we're gonna get to know you a little bit better in a moment first we're gonna tell our listeners a couple of things we're talking about. We're going to just check in for a bracing cup of hot Fox News cope. We're going to just listen to them freaking out about the results of the midterm. And we're going to talk about the New York Times and how they are covering the good news for progressives, which it seems like they're
Starting point is 00:10:24 ignoring a lot of it. So we'll talk about that. Then if we have time, we might even get into a preview of a couple holiday classics in the making coming from Netflix. All of that, plenty more. But first, Ophira, we like to ask our guests, what is something from your search history? Okay, so I've started to travel again, touring during doing stand-up. And because I haven't done it in a little while, I find hotel rooms. I never loved them, but I never thought about them.
Starting point is 00:10:52 But now I want to make them better. Anyways, so I was looking up hotel room hacks, like how to make your hotel room a better experience. Because I'm not staying at the Four Seasons. Let me just point that out. Okay. Okay. I would love that, though. You're like, because the Four Seasons is an absolute horror show.
Starting point is 00:11:11 Yeah. How do I dial up this experience to make it a little more comforting? Right. Right. Right. Yeah. No, I'm hoping for a Hampton Inn. You know what I'm saying?
Starting point is 00:11:18 Yeah. So, one of the things I find, especially if you're talking all the time, is humidity. I find hotel rooms super dry. So I was like, there's got to be some people talking about hotel humidifier hacks. Turns out there's many people who have tackled this issue.
Starting point is 00:11:36 Oh, good. The internet comes through exactly where we would expect them to. What is the one hotel room hack? What is the one hotel room hack that like what is the one that you are now you're like okay i'm definitely bringing that into so i kind of want to try this humidifier one so you have to have binder clips like you need to bring a clip with you some sort of clip and then you're supposed to grab one of their hand towels or face towels
Starting point is 00:11:59 and just soak it wring it out and then clip it to the outside of whatever air vent is in your room. And it should basically, as they said, make the air like moist and yeah, moist and feel good. So it seems like an over promise there. Sure. But I'm going to try it. In my mind, I would do something that would cause some terrible plumbing thing.
Starting point is 00:12:26 Like, yeah, just leave the shower running all night. Right. Full steam. That was what I assumed was going to be the answer. And in fact, I've done that before. Oh, yeah. I do that just for all my clothes. I'm like, time to go to the dry cleaner. Oh, yeah. Yeah, I do that for clothes.
Starting point is 00:12:41 I heard that somewhere and have just assumed that it was, you know, gospel. I mean, what a colossal waste of water. And we're all like, let's do it. I mean, come on. Yeah. It's like, well, these rooms aren't so dry. I wouldn't have to use up all the potable water in the area.
Starting point is 00:12:57 Thank you. Thank you. And also one time I got a lot of splash on my clothes and they were too wet to wear. They're like, I didn't get pee on these pants. I was trying to steam them in the bathroom. They're like, okay, dude. No one even asked. Ophira, since you travel so much, I always ask this because as somebody
Starting point is 00:13:13 who's lived in a lot of hotels and work and things like that, do you have a fucked up relationship with Mario Lopez? You know, I'm always like, how much money are you paid for this i'm like i want to know i don't who else has that kind of ubiquity you know what i mean like if you turn on a fucking tv in the united states in a hotel the first fucking guy you're gonna hear is like hey it's mario lopez i'm like talking to you about the hotel and the brand and all the great things yeah so uplifting how the television works yeah i just there's
Starting point is 00:13:52 something i i feel like it's wild i mean i'm really like were you paid 17 million dollars or are you mad because you got paid like 600 bucks. Right. You know what I mean? What is, what's something that you think is overrated? Okay, probably unpopular, but I'm doubling down on this, especially because I live in Brooklyn. Beyond Burger? Not a fan. Okay, like, am I a fan of a plant-based diet because of all the good things that comes with it, including health and probably doing the best thing you can for this planet. Yes.
Starting point is 00:14:26 But Beyond Burger is grown, let's just say, in a lab. Right. Yeah. And that bothers you. Yeah. Yeah. Because part of me just, well, you know, when you cut a Beyond Burger, it bleeds. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:14:39 So that's like, that's the thing. Why it's sort of tasty. It's like mimicking meat. That's like, that's the thing, why it's sort of tasty. It's like mimicking meat. Anyways, I just think the whole thing is, I think we hail it as to be this kind of something that is so like, we say plant-based makes it sound like it was grown and cut, but that is grown in a lab. They figured out how to make it bleed, you know, because all the vegetarians are like,
Starting point is 00:15:00 you know what I miss? Murder. I miss the blood. Exactly. I can't watch an artichoke heart stop do we know what the blood is from like what have they what's not actual blood even in red meat it's called myoglobin or whatever yes comes out yeah yeah so they i mean i know it's not blood but like what how do they how do they create such an effect i'm i'm i mean i think the nicest way to say it is that it is like extracted and then injected but it might just be a chemical reaction i don't know yeah i think there's
Starting point is 00:15:34 there's something they've figured out i mean i think yeah it for the the draw that i think for some people is more for like people who would never like who don't normally eat plant based. And it's like, hey, idiot, you like burger, right? Yeah. Yeah. OK, fucking try this. Oh, wow. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:53 And look, that wasn't fucking beef. Can you do that for a couple of days a week so we don't fuck this whole planet over? Right. Yeah. But there is I feel like there is like I've read that there I guess like the appeal is like maybe starting to wane. Yeah. Because people just get into other kinds of plant based diets. But yeah.
Starting point is 00:16:10 Yeah. Also, it's not like it's less expensive. You know, the Kobe beef burger is eleven dollars and then the Beyond Burger is eleven fifty. You're like, yeah, I think. Yeah, I feel like there. Yeah. It hails from a like techn technocratic impulse where technology fixes everything. We're good here. I think it's probably in the process of dying out a little bit. It's been on the decline for a long time. We talked about it with respect to Iron Man and Elon Musk, that whole impulse. man and Elon Musk like that whole impulse but I don't know I made peace with the fact that every food that I've ever eaten was constructed in a lab but because like that's right like
Starting point is 00:16:53 by food nacho cheese Doritos were have been have had more like R&D and like hours of education dumped into their creation that like to make sure that their mouth feel is like satisfying and yet leaves you wanting more and i'm like yeah i mean this is this is what we do this is the height of western civilization as currently defined unfortunately so i might as well partake in it and like the beyond i i guess the fact that the beyond burger kind of it no matter how hard i tried no matter where i look there's no nacho cheese doritos on like artisanal menus so i i feel you there though soon it's right yeah well like it's in like farm farm totable fresh restaurants with Beyond Burger.
Starting point is 00:17:45 Exactly. This might as well be delivered to you by someone in a white coat. Yeah. I'm still okay with that. It's the Doritos of the plant-based diet. I mean, that's true. I've never opened up in my entire life a bag of Doritos and thought, are these old? Right. Right.
Starting point is 00:18:04 Fresh off the whatever press. Can I conceptualize even four of the ingredients that are on the back? Sugar. That's the only one I can guarantee. Hey, corn. I know that one. Corn. There you go.
Starting point is 00:18:18 What is something you think is underrated? Okay. Another food thing. And I know a lot of people talk about food things. But here we go. On election night, I was too nervous to cook. So we ordered pizza, we kind of over-ordered pizza, which is what I love to do. And then it's been a while, but the next morning, I was rushed, and I just took a piece out of the fridge of cold pizza with the cheese in that sort of hard sheath that it was made on the top.
Starting point is 00:18:49 And I shoved it in my mouth and I was like, this is heaven. I mean, and I was like, I could sell this for as a breakfast at an artisanal farm to table joint in Brooklyn because it's so good. And you could even just double down on what it is because then it would seem like ironic to be like cold pizza. Yeah. Cold pizza slice. You call it about last night. And then you're like, what's that?
Starting point is 00:19:17 It's like, it's a cold pizza slice, man. The cheese just candle wax hard. That's what you're here for. Interesting. Interesting. Yeah. I love cold pizza. I mean, it's like,
Starting point is 00:19:28 it's for the longest time. I would either, I hated how a microwave would just turn the fucking crust to like a weapon. And then once I started doing this show with Jack, he swears by his pan method of reheating. So like, I've started to reheat my pizza slices better, but I still love like
Starting point is 00:19:45 we just rip it out of the ziploc because you threw them all the slices in a ziploc the night before and just have that first slice yeah it's good it's like the ingredients found each other in that fridge at night right exactly been mixing it up yeah it's a higher quality all right let's take a quick break we'll be right back to talk some news i'm jess casaveto executive producer of the hit netflix documentary series dancing for the devil the 7m tiktok cult and i'm cleo gray former member of 7m films and shekinah church and we're the host of the new podcast forgive me Me For I Have Followed.
Starting point is 00:20:27 Together, we'll be diving even deeper into the unbelievable stories behind 7M Films and LA-based Shekinah Church, an alleged cult that has impacted members for over two decades. Jessica and I will delve into the hidden truths between high-control groups and interview dancers, church members, and others whose lives and careers have been impacted, just like mine. Through powerful, in-depth interviews with former members and new, chilling firsthand accounts, the series will illuminate untold
Starting point is 00:20:53 and extremely necessary perspectives. Forgive Me For I Have Followed will be more than an exploration. It's a vital revelation aimed at ensuring these types of abuses never happen again. Listen to Forgive Me For I Have Followed on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, I'm Gianna Pradente. And I'm Jimei Jackson-Gadsden.
Starting point is 00:21:16 We're the hosts of Let's Talk Offline, a new podcast from LinkedIn News and iHeart Podcasts. When you're just starting out in your career, you have a lot of questions like, how do I speak up when I'm feeling overwhelmed? Or can I negotiate a higher salary if this is my first real job? Girl, yes. Each week we answer your unfiltered work questions. Think of us as your work besties you can turn to for advice. And if we don't know the answer, we bring in experts who do, like resume specialist Morgan Santer. The only difference between the person who doesn't get the job and the person who gets the job is usually who applies. Yeah, I think a lot about that quote.
Starting point is 00:21:53 What is it like you miss 100% of the shots you never take? Yeah, rejection is scary, but it's better than you rejecting yourself. Together, we'll share what it really takes to thrive in the early years of your career without sacrificing your sanity or sleep. Listen to Let's Talk Offline on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. I'm Keri Champion, and this is season four of Naked Sports, where we live at the intersection of sports and culture. Up first, I explore the making of a rivalry, Kaitlyn Clark versus Angel Reese. I know I'll go down in history.
Starting point is 00:22:29 People are talking about women's basketball just because of one single game. Every great player needs a foil. I ain't really near them boys. I just come here to play basketball every single day, and that's what I focus on. From college to the pros, Clark and Reese have changed the way
Starting point is 00:22:42 we consume women's sports. Angel Reese is a joy to watch. She is unapologetically black. I love her. What exactly ignited this fire? Why has it been so good for the game? And can the fanfare surrounding these two supernovas be sustained? This game is only going to get better because the talent is getting better.
Starting point is 00:23:02 This new season will cover all things sports and culture. Listen to Naked Sports on the Black Effect Podcast Network, iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. The Black Effect Podcast Network is sponsored by Diet Coke. When you think of Mexican culture, you think of avocado, mariachi, delicious cuisine, and of course, lucha libre. It doesn't get more Mexican than this. Lucha Libre is known globally because it is much more than just a sport and much more than just entertainment. Lucha Libre is a type of storytelling. It's a dance. It's tradition. It's culture. This is Lucha Libre Behind the Mask, a 12-episode podcast in both English and Spanish about the
Starting point is 00:23:43 history and cultural richness of Lucha Libre. And I'm your host, Santos Escobar, the emperor of Lucha Libre and a WWE superstar. Join me as we learn more about the history behind this spectacular sport from its inception in the United States to how it became a global symbol of Mexican culture. We'll learn more about some of the most iconic heroes in the ring. This is Lucha Libre Behind the Mask. Listen to Lucha Libre Behind the Mask as part of My Cultura Podcast Network on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you stream podcasts. And we're back. And I think it's time to check in with Fox News again. It's always nice to see how they're reacting to bad news for their party.
Starting point is 00:24:33 Love a little fascist freak out. I think we can have a little Fox News rage as a little treat for everybody this Friday morning. Why not? Because they are still angrily dealing with what the heck happened in these midterms. I thought it was a red wave. Here's a fantastic supercut from Kat Abu on Twitter. I can't believe John Fetterman won. This is, in fact, bad for the Democrats. They're going to misread this. It's like, oh, we won. Joe Biden was not punished. This morning, had there been a big red wave, everybody would be going,
Starting point is 00:25:04 blame Joe Biden. Can't say that. You can't say that right now. Still a win for pro-lifers. This new generation is totally brainwashed. When we just owned the libs, we didn't win those races. This is not a surprise. We knew it would be extremely tight. Forget the red wave, the red tide, whatever it was, it doesn't matter at this point. They're always going to spin things against us. Single women and voters under 40 have been captured by Democrats. So we need these ladies to get married. Okay. I've been saying that for years.
Starting point is 00:25:34 Right? Yeah. So they're starting. Look, they're having an interesting week. There was one where Tucker Carlson, I think last night or the day before, he was like, now what happens to all these people who we gave millions of dollars to? Like, he's he's so mad. He wants his money back.
Starting point is 00:25:54 He's going to carry the election. I don't know what it is. convinced to go all in on these midterms with this terrible fucking plan and is now trying to lay it at someone else's feet when, let's be real, him and Hannity have some pretty outsized power in terms of how the GOP speaks. Can we also just have a moment to recognize that I guess it's Gen Z, they do
Starting point is 00:26:20 not do surveys. Too many surveys. Too many surveys already in their life. They're like, I'm not doing a survey. I don't pick up calls from my fucking grandma. Exactly. I'm not doing a survey. I'll show up.
Starting point is 00:26:34 Although I do think just yelling at your viewers is the way that they've always energized their party so i would really i wish i feel like it's all part of this you know basically dominant submissive relationship they all have with each other right and now they're just it's like how do you what are you doing you guys bad bad bad bad and so everyone's gonna be like okay and like it will it will actually
Starting point is 00:27:03 energize them so i'm a little bit i i just see that and i get i want to revel in it but yeah it concerns me well i think what is interesting though is how few people who like republicans actually did lose elections they didn't go straight to the bullshit thing which is interesting um like a lot of people suspect that it could be because of like the lawsuits that are hanging around and like potential other legal issues that might arise from that kind of like election denialism that may have hampered the appetite to do that. But that was one thing I was fully like, OK, because before we heard like people in certain counties like we already want an audit of the vote like before Election Day. So that felt like a preview of things to come. But it hasn't quite materialized in the way i had feared yeah in that supercut i forget who said it but just the
Starting point is 00:27:52 and biden wasn't punished totally sounds yeah that was tucker that totally sounds like when the grinch is mad that the christmas still went on yeah yeah it came with no ribbons it came with no bones here's the sound of singing yeah yeah right so let's talk about because i i also feel like there's a inability to cope with what we've seen in some you know more local but very like i guess also in the fetterman, but like progressive values had a really good day at the poll and specifically like the crime wave narrative that I think a lot of the mainstream media, even though they're supposedly liberal, they really bought into this, that like crime wave is going to scare voters. We must, Democrats must double down on police must do this and like it's
Starting point is 00:28:47 been just a persistent narrative ever since chesa boudin and san francisco like was recalled the media has been like progressive politics is a loser it's a it's a wave we're all fucked yeah and that that just really hasn't borne out but we're still not really seeing that messaging breakthrough no i it's it's interesting again no one's really talking there were a lot of progressive da's that either were elected or re-elected across the country you know like this is like like philly chicago iowa texas oklahoma, like a whole assortment of states from red to purple to blue. You know, they had it all. And Oklahoma City, I just want to point out, too, not necessarily a place or like Iowa or Texas where the shorthand of the media is like a woke bastion, you know, San Francisco. Although like that one with Boudin was a little bit of an outlier because san francisco is like a
Starting point is 00:29:45 little more of a unique quantity when you look at electoral politics i know it's billionaires like per square mile of any location so yeah most people are like it's all dreadlocks and birkenstocks okay like no it isn't but anyway in many of these areas though though, where progressive DAs were elected or reelected, they also have significant minority populations. And those are the communities that tend to experience much of the crime firsthand. So they are truly the ones, too, when they're voting, are the ones seeing like, man, this kind of fucked up policy does not work. In fact, it's so regressive. It actually just feels like people are just held in captivity for money, which they are. I want to put this quote from law professor Laura Bazalone, who's from the University of San Francisco, was on Democracy Now! this morning. She said, was sort of describing what is happening is this quote, this understanding said, I think what all this tells you is that this experiment, this experiment with criminal justice reform, this understanding that we can't incarcerate our way to safety, that the kind of cruelty that some of these punishments are exerting on people to no good effect,
Starting point is 00:30:53 and then the other additional problems like wrongful conviction or just criminalizing poverty so that rich people who are dangerous can buy their way out, but poor people have to stay inside, that there are a lot of voters who realize that none of these policies are humane, just or effective. Yeah. Well, and I think just also like just let's turn a complete blind eye to all the white collar crime. Like it is so focused, so specific on, you know, basically a poor person, a poor or crazy person is going to shoot you. That's it. Right.
Starting point is 00:31:29 Right. Rob you and shoot you. Yeah. Right. Assault you and shoot you. Whatever that is. And that's it. And why is that?
Starting point is 00:31:35 You know, well, that gets a little muddy. Right. But all of the white collar crime, all of that is just always sort of like, no, that's under control. Really? Which is because you could. Yeah. Like you could you could probably draw pretty interesting lines to like corporate profiteering and poverty to the people. They're like, and then those people are like, oh, I'm poor and violent. I think the real violence is actually happening in the C-suites of a lot of these corporations. I mean, I was just in, I was in, took my son because it was day off school to the Met and
Starting point is 00:32:10 just looking, you know, there's still some of the galleries are the Sackler galleries and we all know about the Sacklers and their involvement in profiting so highly off of oxycodone and selling opiates and marketing that. And, you know, I think there was definitely something talked about. Were those people? Yeah. Why isn't that a story every single day? You know, of course.
Starting point is 00:32:33 Right. I think, yeah, when we have such like media consolidation with the billionaire class, like they know, it's like, dude, the people, the guys who own this place, they might not want stories like that coming out of here. Exactly. Let's talk about the poor people. All right.
Starting point is 00:32:45 They actively marketed and created a problem that is still killing hundreds of thousands of people, like killing people every day in the local media. And instead, the local media is focused on like too much shoplifting and CBS. Oh, yeah. And I obviously I live in New York. So that is a place that is the story of crime always exists. And I know people, some of my family's in Canada, but even other places, they're always like, God, New York must be so scary right now. And I'm like, it is? That was one of the social media responses I saw to people on, you know, L.A. had a lot of progressive candidates do very well and progressive ballot measures and the existing sheriff get voted out like definitively. And I saw a lot of people being like, well, you must be the only person from L.A. who hasn't been mugged or robbed this year.
Starting point is 00:33:43 And I've been here my whole life, family. Yeah, never. It's we're good here you're just seeing fox news's version of los angeles it's it's wild how much fox news focuses on like very specific cities and like getting a narrative going what has to because it's saying look what happens in the cities where these libs live they think they know it all and there's shit on the ground like right that's really what they're all trying and it's so bad and it's funny because there are so many like boomer tweets where people are like oh like you see like a post about crime in like new york and they're like i've always wanted to go back to new york city you know but
Starting point is 00:34:19 guess that's never gonna happen with the way things look i just i just i care too much about my safety i'm like you y'all are really eating this shit up. Yeah. Yeah. And you know, for those of us who live here, we're like, good, keep out, keep that PR going out because we need less people. Yeah, exactly. Okay. Yeah. You want, you want some like out of town and be like, maybe I'll go to Brooklyn and you want their first idea to be like, no, I mean, I remember before the pandemic, uh, you you know i've lived here 20 years and just before the pandemic sitting on a subway and just watching you know what i'm just going to call very entitled tourists who you know they were a little too casual with their new york experience on the subway
Starting point is 00:34:58 and i just want to just like i don't want anyone to be afraid but i was like shouldn't you be just a little more afraid like you don't know this place you afraid. But I was like, shouldn't you be just a little more afraid? Like, you don't own this place. You're visiting. Okay, you're visiting. Right. Seriously. But so the New York Times, I want to specifically call out for their lack of coverage and not just lack of coverage of like this progressive movement and grassroots movement that we're seeing, like, come through and start to show real promise in some of these local elections and, you know, in the big what was supposed to be like
Starting point is 00:35:31 the focus of the election night with Fetterman defeating Oz. But like there I don't I don't feel like they've really figured out how to spin that. And to that point, the New York Times, the day after the election, published a piece in the opinion section, but it was very much couched in like, here are statistics and here are the facts. And we talked to pollsters and a Harvard sociologist. The article is titled, For Republicans, Crime Pays, No Matter What Else Happens. for Republicans, crime pays no matter what else happens. And the entire premise of the article is that the Republicans really doubled down on crime in this election. I'm just going to read a quote. They quote, a Democratic pollster is reinforcing this point that it's a winner for Republicans and a loser for Democrats.
Starting point is 00:36:25 And this is a quote from a pollster. The 2022 midterms will be remembered as a toxic campaign, but an effective one in labeling Democrats as pro-crime. Greenberg wrote in How Democrats Mishandled Crime, a November 3rd American prospect article. When voters in our survey were asked what they feared the most, if Democrats win full control, and then like just 56% chose crime and homelessness out of control, you know, all of the talking points that go along with this. But the article just, I think they wrote it before the election results and just removed a couple of the more strongly worded parts because they even mention Pennsylvania. The Republican focus on crime is reflected in spending data. On November
Starting point is 00:37:11 3rd, in the Reason Republican Attacks on Crime Are So Potent, Li Zhao, a reporter at Vox, wrote Republicans have spent $157 million on crime-related ads. And the breakdown is even starker in the Pennsylvania Senate race, where Republicans have spent nearly $12 million on crime ads compared to $2.5 million on the economy and inflation. And they don't go on to mention that that was a loser. That was a losing strategy. And it just, it goes down, like they go down to interview like Paul Beggala and he's like, it worked for Clinton. They just need to be really tough on crime and double down on policing and the death penalty and just all these like old school, like 90s political. It worked in 92 after the riots. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:38:00 Like, you know what I mean? Like, what the what the fuck are we talking? Yeah. Then maybe when people were ignorant as shit, like it's so weird. I I'm wondering when the like when all corporate media like I mean, they're never going to be like they've really shown they are so out of touch. Nothing they said is just is in touch with anything. The amount of red wave coming, red wave coming coverage on The New York Times. Like this was a quote this was an
Starting point is 00:38:25 article from what october 19th democrats feared red october has arrived many democrats hoped it would be a weird election but with election day just three weeks away the mig terms aren't shaping up that way and but let's pretend that motivated people let's just pretend that it was there was some potential and let's just pretend you know even in new york where if you were a democrat people are always like yeah your vote you know it counts but it doesn't really count you know i was at a show with a bunch of people that work in politics and they were like you every vote is gonna count tomorrow okay oh yeah yeah and uh i i'm new to voting so i just became an American citizen recently, but I was definitely going to do it. Thanks. But I do feel I haven't seen the note, the numbers on the turnout, but I felt like it was really good.
Starting point is 00:39:14 So I don't like that we are driven by fear. Yeah. I mean, New York was a little different. It wasn't great for Democrats, which a lot of people were surprised because the party ended up fighting a bunch of like left like candidates on the left, like spent more energy fighting candidates on the left than like attacking like this crime, like Lee Zeldin's crime wave insistence, which motivated a lot of Republicans to come out like in an interesting way, because I think's where new york's a little different because it is so blue every republican's like exactly get them all out right like they fully turned up while there's like it's fine i don't know new york's not that blue by the way new york is first of all historically like they're they've been like they were pro-slavery at the beginning of like they when it was you know, the Dutch East Indy colony founding it. And like that kind of reverberated down through the politics. There's a lot of Republican mayors and shit.
Starting point is 00:40:14 There's a former chief of police mayor like New York City has like very you're right. It's like very specific and unexpected politics that don't really fit into the overall narrative. I mean, more in the sense of like for the Republican voter, they can look at a Democrat governor, senator, other leaders in that sense to say the leadership is blue. Yeah. And that is a motivating force for people to come out. But I'm wondering, like, you know, so there have been so many bad takes and shout out to the people on Twitter that have just been collecting everyone's terrible bad faith arguments prior to the election, because we really should be like, what's your strategy for like having better like a better way to engage with like the stories that are happening rather than seeing like what the herd is doing? And I mean, like, well, here's my take on the herd mentality. Right. Just all editorial, just all editorial. Yeah. And it's all covering it like it's a sporting event. And like so this article doesn't explicitly do this, but it does essentially
Starting point is 00:41:11 do this, which I think is sort of the mainstream Democrat and mainstream media apparatus sort of, I don't know, conception of how Democrats can possibly conceive of crime. They can either double down on like basically be a Republican about it and be like, we need to fund like extra fund the police and support the death penalty like Clinton did. We can ignore that crime is a problem or just say defund the police and offer no further context. Like those are the three options that they are dealing with in this article. And it's just like a Tucker Carlsonian bad faith argument of like how how to even approach this. And so they published this article after this overall strategy was shown to backfire in a lot of like really significant ways for the Republican Party. And they completely ignore anywhere where there is like this alternative messaging that came through and worked like at a local level. You know, we talked on yesterday's episode about Kenneth Mejia, who ran a campaign that was he's
Starting point is 00:42:20 like 31, just really focused. He was a defund the police candidate. And that was like his most explicit position. And he outperformed both mayoral candidates, both the like very mainstream Democratic candidate and also the, you know, fake Democrat Republican Rick Caruso, he vastly outperformed them by just giving specifics, by just being like, here's like when when you say defund the police, look how much they are funded compared to everything else. intelligence on the subject instead of like this whole paul begala james carville thing where it's all this like smoke and mirrors and we have to message it this way and people don't understand you can't get them in touch with their safety unless you do a real horrible violent act in front of them and that's where our money should be from the police dumbest thing i heard since my mama tried to put a boot on my head and call it a bounty. What the fuck are you talking about? I think what you have to say, though, all broke down when you said, and respect their other person's intelligence.
Starting point is 00:43:34 That is ridiculous. We do not do that, okay? I can do that. That's like the worst thing that can work. So I do think this goes, like, each generation gets a little bit savvier at dealing with the media than the previous generation. But the media is run by older generations and they are't vote the way that anybody in the mainstream media expected them to. And it's like, yeah, they voted in a way that seems like they, they're looking at the problem.
Starting point is 00:44:13 They read solutions. Yeah. Right. It aligned with their values and based on policies and based on, you know, stuff that we're trying to actually talk about in a real way instead of, yeah, just all the, the smoke and mirrors and the, this is going to happen.
Starting point is 00:44:28 Just wait. You're going to wake up and all your rights are going to be stripped away. And then what are you going to do? Yeah. And it's fun. I keep comparing it to like that M. Night Shyamalan movie, The Village, where they really think. Oh, yeah. You just keep telling everybody the same shit over.
Starting point is 00:44:43 You don't want to go out there. You don't want to see what's out there. guess what most people are living out there they don't actually live so your village ass messaging doesn't resonate to somebody who lives who lives in the area where they're like yeah that's a motherfucking airplane oh y'all didn't hear about that in the village well that's on y'all and this whole election i feel like was really defined at least to me is what I'm seeing like broadly by just people beginning to feel the disconnect between policies that uphold the status quo and what their actual day-to-day lives are like. And from there,
Starting point is 00:45:15 using their own intelligence to be like, I see somebody who's destitute, or I look at my own situation where I can barely afford housing. And I don't think the plan should be, yo, get, kick these people out to the Mojave Desert where they can just expire in the sun. I think we need more affordable housing. Right. You know, they're like, what the fuck is going on? These woke people.
Starting point is 00:45:35 No. Talk solution. What about tax cuts for luxury planes? Yeah. I do have to call out this Harvard sociologist, though, for they made this claim. So they were like, Democrats want to claim that crime isn't a problem, but that ignores that crime is a problem in, you know, black neighborhoods and poor neighborhoods. So, you know, not funding the police is racist is essentially the argument that they make. is racist is essentially the argument that they make. And it's like, to your point,
Starting point is 00:46:07 miles, we saw that people who live in neighborhoods that are affected by higher crime are not buying into this bullshit narrative that like the way to attack this is by fucking funding a police force that acts like an occupying army. Like they know that this is bullshit and getting Paul Begala and a Harvard sociologist to tell them otherwise isn't, isn't tricking anyone. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:46:32 Well, yeah. Good luck to them. Don't you remember? That's how we solve things. Give them all guns. Why doesn't everyone have a gun? Yeah,
Starting point is 00:46:38 exactly. And then even then, but a lot of people were like, no, I don't, I don't even think that what you really said that out loud. They also, yeah,
Starting point is 00:46:44 they quote the, so because this is a crime article, they had to like quote the crime statistics, which are very like complicated and they point in different directions in different parts of the country. And they were like, but the one thing we're seeing is more gun violence and more murders, but they don't mention like like because there are way more guns and anytime there's more access to guns, that's what happens in in this country. Because, again, that's just seen as a, I guess, childish argument because it doesn't take into account the reality that like, well, you know, gun manufacturers own all of us.
Starting point is 00:47:20 So we can't actually say that. Right. Are you a child? Get the fuck out of here. Right. Exactly. Quiet. Daddy's actually say that. Right. Are you a child? Get the fuck out of here. Right. Exactly. Quiet. Daddy's listening. Yeah. Right. Exactly. Got to meet with Wayne LaPierre later. I'm continuing to search Kenneth Mejia on The New York Times just to see like when will they mention this race that is like a great blueprint for how the Democratic Party should move like all at once yesterday. And the only mention so far is a Halloween article
Starting point is 00:47:48 about how like when Democrats go against each other, it gets nasty, folks. And they quote his opponent claiming that he is a anarchist and an anti-Semite. They put that in there and he's not and it's like absolute. But that's that's the only thing that they've mentioned about this candidate who just, you know, used a strategy that. Anarchist. Yeah. Anarchist. I mean, that's
Starting point is 00:48:16 the smear for people who believe that less physical police presence and like more support for communities is the answer is they right they go yes oh so you're for anarchy right yeah right exactly lawless society you want just nothing right yeah right and as a jew i will say uh you know most people are anti-semite so you just sort of like you just that's like a penny you just get rid of that all right let's take a quick break we'll come back we'll talk holiday movies we'll be right back i'm jess casavetto executive producer of the hit netflix documentary series dancing for the devil

I'm Keri Champion, and this is season four of Naked Sports, where we live at the intersection of sports and culture. Up first, I explore the making of a rivalry, Kaitlyn Clark versus Angel Reese. I know I'll go down in history. People are talking about women's basketball just because of one single game.
Starting point is 00:51:15 Every great player needs a foil. I ain't really near them boys. I just come here to play basketball every single day, and that's what I focus on. From college to the pros, Clark and Reese have changed the way we consume women's sports. Angel Reese is a joy to watch. She is unapologetically black. I love her. What exactly ignited this fire?
Starting point is 00:51:34 Why has it been so good for the game? And can the fanfare surrounding these two supernovas be sustained? This game is only going to get better because the talent is getting better. This new season will cover all things sports and culture. Listen to Naked Sports on the Black Effect Podcast

Starting point is 00:52:07 It doesn't get more Mexican than this. Lucha libre is known globally because it is much more than just a sport and much more than just entertainment. Lucha libre is a type of storytelling. It's a dance. It's tradition. It's culture. This is Lucha Libre Behind the Mask,
Starting point is 00:52:21 a 12-episode podcast in both English and Spanish about the history and cultural richness of Lucha Libre. Starting point is 00:52:55 app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you stream podcasts. And we're back. And let's talk about so disney is bringing the santa claus cinematic universe to disney plus streaming which if you're not familiar the santa claus movies have always been pretty fucked up since the original is the only christmas movie where santa claus dies in the first 10 minutes yeah yeah yeah yeah it's also i think the only Christmas movie where Santa Claus dies in the first 10 minutes. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. It's edgy. It's also, I think, the only Christmas movie
Starting point is 00:53:29 to feature references to an actual adult sex hotline that real 90s kids called. Amazing. Amazing. 800 Spank Me. That leads to a 900 line with adult content and high charges to nine-year-old girls called the 800 line
Starting point is 00:53:45 ended up ringing up more than $500 in charges. But anyways, Merry Christmas. It's kind of hard to separate Tim Allen, who is the star of the original, one of the producers of this new show they're bringing to Disney Plus. That's basically a series set in that universe. It's hard to separate Tim Allen, the Santa Claus, from his outspoken public persona, where he kind of routinely whines about the oppression he faces as a Hollywood conservative who charges, I think, a million dollars per stand-up show. So we all feel struggling, man. I think about him every night. I pray him right yeah as you lay on your pile of cash but you can you can really read this show as a story that is symbolically about trump deciding to run for the 2024 election with santa as the stand-in for trump because in this newly
Starting point is 00:54:38 released trailer santa discovers that people don't believe in him anymore oh there's an opening scene in which a hysterical woman throws a wine bottle at his head. Wait a second. Is there any other kind? I'm not... Any other kind of woman? That's what's written in the script.
Starting point is 00:54:54 That's good. Hysterical woman one. And Santa notices that the magic meter approval rating is plummeting. And so he decides to retire for the good of christmas he doesn't urge his fans to hang bernard the elf or anyone which is good but the language of the moment is so for the good of christmas i'm retiring recalls the rhetoric surrounding calls for trump to concede the election but then it turns out that the person after him sucks.
Starting point is 00:55:26 Joe Biden. And he's called Joe Biden, right? He's a much older Santa Claus. Brandon Claus. Yeah, Brandon. But there's a legit quote from the trailer. I retired too soon. I hired the wrong guy.
Starting point is 00:55:44 And so he has to come back and you know triumphantly return to the north pole remove the new santa from power a bloody coup ensues i have to assume yeah exactly i mean also famous for wearing red hat you know it couldn't be any clearer i mean yeah it feels like one of those things where tim allen doesn't realize what he's doing you know right like he's like yeah and then like they don't like him so he leaves but then they realize this new guy's like are you talking about donald trump he's like i oh shit yeah right yeah right maybe i wasn't thinking about that i only think about yeah yeah why would i be talking about him? It's Christmas. Okay.
Starting point is 00:56:27 I mean, yeah, it is. Also, I put this in the category my husband and I talk about all the time. Like, nobody asked for that. You know, as far as a holiday movie is concerned, are we like, hey, is there a Santa tale about how one fucks up and the old one has to come back? And it's like, no, no, no one needs that. As a series? Yeah, as a series. Santa might be a cautionary tale about regime change.
Starting point is 00:56:53 Is there anything like that that we could? What's a binge-worthy Santa tale? Right. So at the end, does he charge for the gifts? How does this work? Yeah, we actually don't know that. We're still waiting to see. yeah i mean this is so funny on one side you have this on disney plus or it's like yeah maybe joe biden sucks and trump should come back and then andor's like
Starting point is 00:57:14 it's all about armed revolution and you're like i love andor so much it's so good it's like it's like hard it's hard star wars wow oh yeah and it is it's all right it's all about the police state yeah and revolutionaries but like you know deeping into that story it's the best both sides truly both sides there's dudes like you taking a piss in it you know what i mean like there's just stuff you don't see in like like star wars is so sanitized although it's it's so great you don't see in like Star Wars is so sanitized it's so great I don't know I really enjoyed it
Starting point is 00:57:48 there's someone taking a piss you wouldn't see someone taking a piss in a Star Wars film that's been my number one complaint since I was a child and saw Star Wars for the first time right in a helmet they take a piss in a helmet and then someone else puts it on no that does not happen
Starting point is 00:58:04 that would be the prankster Star Wars. That's like the level of realness. No, I love it. I mean, Star Wars is big in my family. My son's name is Lucas. Oh my God. Wow. Yeah. Super producer Justin says it's the best Star Wars property ever made.
Starting point is 00:58:20 You are correct. Oh, okay. Now we're showing up. Look in the back. You see that? That's Endor. Oh, my goodness. And that's Tatooine.
Starting point is 00:58:31 Wow. I'm holding up my Star Wars posters for those who don't understand. This is not a visual medium. Who made Endor? Tony Gilroy made it. Tony Gilroy. That's right. Did Tony Gilroy, is he the one who made Michael Clayton?
Starting point is 00:58:46 Yeah. Yeah. I think so. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And theroy, that's right. Did Tony Gilroy, is he the one who made Michael Clayton? Yeah. Yeah, I think so. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And the Bourne films, right? Yeah, he wrote the Bourne films, made Michael Clayton, which has a very good anti-corporate message. The Bourne films, anti-CIA message. Oh, Rogue One, too, yeah.
Starting point is 00:59:01 All right. Well, Ophira, it's been such a pleasure having you on the podcast. Where can people find you, follow you, hear you, all that good stuff? Thanks. Thanks, Jack. Thanks, Miles. I'm at, well, my new podcast is called Parenting is a Joke with iHeartMedia. So you can find that wherever you get your podcasts. And you can follow me on the socials at Ophira E. Starting point is 00:59:38 And is there a tweet or some other work of social media you've been enjoying? You know, right now i am sort of i'm enjoying where people are deactivating their twitter account and then taking a screenshot of that and putting it on their instagram as a post it is the most you know for to be virtuous like look at the thing like no one can just leave just leave okay i don't need to like celebrate your leaving on a different meta social situation. It's hilarious to me. Just leave. It's okay.
Starting point is 01:00:13 Got to announce though. Got to announce. Miles, where can people find you? And what is a tweet you've been enjoying? Find me at miles of gray on Twitter and Instagram. I am. Wow. I do not know how to say that.

Starting point is 01:01:27 Like, yeah, that space, I feel like that's maybe Steve Bannon has his eyes on the woo-woo space as the next block he can maybe turn out. And then Sarah Meyer, at Sarah Meyer NYC, this is just like an election day tweet that was so funny. It said, I just voted and was approached by an elderly woman looking on her NYC ballot for Dr. Oz. I don't really know where to go from here. Perhaps to the bar. Yeah. Where is Dr. Oz? Oh, no. Can you help me?
Starting point is 01:01:50 You don't even know what fucking... What? Are you watching that much Fox? You just think there's like three candidates? Okay. Okay. You can find me on Twitter at Jack underscore O'Brien. A tweet I've been enjoying.
Starting point is 01:02:05 Katie at Skateady420 tweeted, my Uber driver yelled, oh Jesus, what is that? And then said, oh, it's the Goodyear blimp. I thought it was a ghost. Which is both very funny and not what you want to hear
Starting point is 01:02:17 from your Uber driver necessarily. But also, whenever I see the Goodyear blimp, I have that same thought. I'm like, what the fuck? Oh, right. Really? Yeah.
Starting point is 01:02:26 Not whenever. I'll say I've frequently had that moment. I've seen the big ass Goodyear blimp hovering in the sky and like out of the corner of my eye. And it's just so unlike anything that my brain is ready to process in that spot. Right. And the way some people are with cows where they're like cow when they see one when they drive by i am that for life with good year blimp but like to a degree where i like get very excited and make my kids come outside or you know look and we'll be like
Starting point is 01:02:58 pointing they're like no no it's right over there they're like okay dad i swear it was there the wind problem oh yeah there's just something about when the good year blip is is out like even if it's like for some golf tournament i don't give a shit about there's like a yeah a feeling i mean something is happening yeah like i guess whenever you're at like a sporting event in stereo, it's like, hey, I'm at a good event because the blimp's here. Yeah. I just, blimp's. I do. I know this is like an old internet take, but, you know, if the era of blimps came back, I would not object.
Starting point is 01:03:37 Jack, you're the father of old internet takes. Thank you. You're allowed to dabble in that. Like, you're the OG. You know what I mean? Like, ain't nobody fucking with you.
