Starting point is 00:03:11 That is from Rintaro Okabe, which is an anime character, but your handle is at MosinTheUnar. Thank you for that one. It's coming straight from Bristol. You might big up the Bristol mandem. I noticed you fired back at one of the zeitgang with a uh reply in japanese and yeah uh microsoft i was able to translate it uh you were saying that the rabbit rabbit thing is weird yeah and then uh her response to you i translated and
Starting point is 00:03:41 it was just a period oh really yeah really? Yeah. What did she explain? I think that was the person who displayed name Ayumi, if I'm not mistaken. Yeah, yeah. You know, when people, you know, they find out that I know they're speaking Japanese, I like to speak Japanese with them. Well, we are thrilled to be joined in our third seat by the greatest of all time, the writer, activist, and co-host of the podcast Good Muslim, Bad Muslim, Taz Ahmed. Thanks for having me. Excited to be here. Thank you for being here. See, guys, all you need to do,
Starting point is 00:04:11 we're like, how would you like to be introduced? Taz was like, as the greatest of all time. It's a lie. It's a lie. That was not me. That was just, that was my personal, I came up with that. Just overcome by your presence here in the studio. Taz, we're going to get to know you a little bit better in a moment, but first we're going to tell our listeners what we're talking about. Fox is going in on Oprah. They're telling us what you didn't know about Oprah, her politics. Basically, she is a Leninist. We're going to talk about the UK airports.
Starting point is 00:04:45 They have a problem on their hands, and it sounds like a fun one. America is now the justification for oppression around the world. We're going to talk about how that's happening. We're going to do a check-in with the polls this day before voting day. The New York Times did kind of a recap on that at the end of last week. We're going to talk about the showdown that I did not know was happening in the Catholic Church between the conservative and the liberal pope. I knew like cool pope was here and I knew the conservative evil pope was still out there, but apparently they're having it out in these streets. It's a street fight in Vatican City. We're going to talk about Steve King
Starting point is 00:05:26 being just a tremendous fuck-up. We're going to talk about the AV Club asking a really good question about movie soundtracks. And, of course, we are going to do a Boyd Watch. But first, Taz, what is something from your search history that's revealing about who you are? Okay, this is kind of funny but it makes sense if you know who i am i was searching for songs about jinns and jinns jinns are like
Starting point is 00:05:52 genies you know like the genies but in islam there's this like fourth being and they are referred to as jinns okay oh interesting yeah being, what are the first three? Like humans and angels. I forgot the third. Wait, maybe it's the third being. Yeah. Maybe Jynx is the third being. So Christina Aguilera is genie in a bottle. Totally.
Starting point is 00:06:15 Baby, you got to rub me the right way. Aladdin. Aladdin, yes. And then I Dream of Genie. Those were the only ones I could find. Oh, really? And Game Genie by Galoob. I don't know that one.
Starting point is 00:06:24 Maybe I need to do that one. That was a cheap thing for Super Nintendo, like old throwback video games. Oh, really? And Game Genie by Galoob. I don't know that one. That was a cheap thing for Super Nintendo, like old throwback video games. Oh, I remember the Game Genie. Yeah, where you just put your cartridge in the thing. Anyway, that's for gamers because that's all I do. Of course I remember it. I'm going to be replaced by a millennial pretty soon
Starting point is 00:06:38 just for the betterment of the show. Apparently that whole confusing mystery that I posed about, like, why are these kids dressing up as SWAT team members for Halloween? of the show. Apparently, that whole confusing mystery that I posed about, like, why are these kids dressing up as SWAT team members for Halloween? People were like, dude, it's fucking... From Fortnite.
Starting point is 00:06:52 Fortnite. And we're like, I think it's the militarization of the police state. I liked my theory better. Taz, what is something you think is overrated? White women.
Starting point is 00:07:03 What is something you think is underrated? No. All right. Let's talk. Let overrated? White women. What is something you think is underrated? No. Hold on. All right. Let's talk. Let's talk about white women. White women as voters, I would say.
Starting point is 00:07:12 White women as voters. There's so much focus on getting out white women to vote when there should be way more focus on people of color getting out to vote, especially in the places where we have contentious races like Georgia and Florida. especially in the places where we have contentious races like Georgia and Florida. We just, I mean, like white women always get targeted for ads when it comes to voting and people of color don't. So I'm over it. Overrated.
Starting point is 00:07:34 I feel like it's partially that they just take people of color for granted. They're like, oh, they're going to vote Democrat, right? And it's going to be so problematic tomorrow when people show up on election day and the day after everyone's going to be like, what? Wait, what happened? What is going on? You promised, kind of. Well, yeah, I think they feel like for people of color, we're always faced with like existential threats.
Starting point is 00:07:54 So it makes sense. Like, well, they're motivated to vote. Yes, fear. They could die. Right. And where it's like, well, white women, they take, well, and just people who are very comfortable, we need to figure out how to jar them into voting. Yeah. Over it.
Starting point is 00:08:07 Over it. What is something you think is underrated? Okay, this is, I have two. Okay. Hallmark Christmas movies. Wow. I was just talking about that yesterday. I'm really into Hallmark Christmas movies, even though I think it is an arm of white supremacy.
Starting point is 00:08:23 But, you know, I do politics so much in my day job that I just kind of like to decompress watching just fictional. Just bask in the dumbness of it. Yeah. It's kind of exotic for me to see this because it's not something that I'm used to. And the other one is vote by mail voting. It's so easy to just vote at home. People don't do it because they want the stupid sticker with the line so long.
Starting point is 00:08:45 But they give you the sticker sometimes, don't they? Sometimes. If you get a mail ballot. So yes, you get stickers. Vote for mail.
Starting point is 00:08:52 You can vote on your bed, on your couch, whatever. Vote with friends. It's easy. The toilet, yeah. We will mail you a fucking sticker.
Starting point is 00:08:58 Just vote. Just do it. Please come through. I love the Hallmark thing though because I think that is something, like we were, one of the early episodes of the Daily Zeitgeist. We were talking about how Hallmark, the Hallmark Channel's TV ratings, like after Trump won.
Starting point is 00:09:16 Like through the presidential election. Yeah, they kind of went up with Trump's fortunes. And people were trying to we were trying to decide whether it was a thing thing where it is just you know the rising trend of white supremacy and i totally think it is so all their casting is just white people there's no people of color right and if they are they're like such super sad characters they all just take place in vermont yeah and then it's all about getting urban women urban single women to move out to the suburbs. Is that right? And get married to a guy with a kid whose wife suddenly died. And you're like, okay, so this is about getting urban women to populate the suburbs.
Starting point is 00:09:55 Yeah, the rural areas or whatever. To move to the rural areas. Yeah, because it's always like, oh, my life is so fast in New York City. And I have an assignment in this weird mountain town. And I love the curmudgeon guy who has a horse for a friend. Basically. Yeah. And it's funny, too, because yesterday I was pointed out a tweet
Starting point is 00:10:09 that I really liked from somebody who said, because it was from a black woman who was like, since I don't know anything really about white culture, I'm going to assume everything about Hallmark movies is what's actually going on. And it's true. Yeah, that's the depictions of those things. It seems such a good time, being up in that snow.
Starting point is 00:10:27 I love those movies, though. There's something about trash Christmas films that I can endure. I downloaded the app. They have an app this year where it's like a… Hallmark app? Yeah, they have a Hallmark app of all the Christmas movies. I'm insanely obsessed with Hallmark Christmas movies. I don't celebrate Christmas.
Starting point is 00:10:42 I'm a Muslim woman, for the listeners. So I think that is a part of my obsession. just like oh my gosh i just did not have this growing up right right well that was the other option that we talked about just that it is a perfect like sort of almost conflict-free universe or like where the conflicts are very stupid and like easy uh and like maybe people are just they have conflict on every other channel so they just want to watch the Hallmark Channel. You just get to like unplug. It's pretty much there's never any racial or political tension
Starting point is 00:11:12 in those things. It's pretty much like you say it's like urban versus agrarian. Yeah. If there is conflict it's like well these shitty people don't get it or whatever. That woman with a high paying job she needs to quit it and become a housewife. Right. But the agrarian always wins? Always.
Starting point is 00:11:27 Is there a flipped one where a cowboy comes to the city or something? I mean, there might be. There's like 31 movies this year, new ones. Shout out to the people who are just milking them for those scripts that they put 19 minutes into writing. So I'm working on a script
Starting point is 00:11:44 of my own called Muslim Merry Christmas. So I'm working on a script of my own called Muslim Merry Christmas. So I'm doing a Muslim version of a Christmas rom-com. Oh, dope. It's like mainstreamy Hallmark, but then there's like a very subversive political twist. Oh, see. I mean, I don't think Hallmark's going to take it because it's a little bit too controversial. Yeah, well, Netflix might. Yeah, exactly.
Starting point is 00:12:02 I just love how systematic and formulaic it is and just playing with that. Right. In a way, it's so easy to, in your mind, be like, I think it could be pretty easy to write this thing. It's always sort of this very similar three-act structure. Yeah, I've never written a script before. Right. And I was like, I'm just going to do it. Yeah, perfect.
Starting point is 00:12:17 Because this is LA and this is where that happens. There is a movie that you're talking about where the cowboy, it's called Midnight Cowboy. Have you seen that? He ends up jerking off a bunch of punks. What is a myth? What's something people think is true that you know to be false? Okay, myth. I'd like to talk about how Asian Americans are considered apolitical and not interested in voting.
Starting point is 00:12:43 And that's just not true. We just don't get targeted media. There's a lot of language barriers. There's a lot of cultural barriers. And studies show that most Asian Americans, when they register for a party, they're like 31% non-affiliated. So that's just, you know, we have this population that's just not being talked to. And they need, I mean, they have interests, but they need media.
Starting point is 00:13:05 Right, yeah. Campaigns. I mean, that is a large portion of the population to be unaffiliated. Right, isn't it? Because the rest of the country is very locked into their various camps. So come on, Republicans.
Starting point is 00:13:20 Tell them why you're great. Sell them. Not saying that. Sell them. Not saying that. Sell them. All right, guys, let's get into what's going on. Over the weekend or at the end of last week, Fox was just trying to figure out what to do about the fact that a force of nature happened wherein Oprah Winfrey came to Georgia and didn't win a fiddling contest, but she basically went and campaigned for Stacey Abrams.
Starting point is 00:13:51 Yeah. And they were like, well, we need to do the impossible and make people dislike Oprah. I don't know where they think that's going to work. Right. Everyone loves Oprah. Yeah, and we talked about this. Even on the Venn diagram of racist women left or right, the overlap is Oprah.
Starting point is 00:14:09 Yeah. White women really love Oprah. So, again, I think it's because after Mike Pence took that huge L and was like, hey, I'm a pretty big deal too, and everyone was like, uh-huh, you're as big as Oprah and Will Ferrell, okay? They had to go out on a full-out assault and really come after Oprah's politics. And I don't know if you heard her at a town hall meeting or a rally that she went to for Stacey Abrams
Starting point is 00:14:31 where she was like, you know, Stacey Abrams is advocating for gun control, but we get it. It's Georgia. People like to hunt. But, like, common sense gun control or, you know, ensuring the environment is safe for our children and that people have access to medical care and things like that. Well, this is how Fox took those words. In addition to having a very interesting look on how her favorite things episodes sort of ties into this ideology. That far leftist message. I mean, you talk Ainsley about that, you know, all of the free things that Oprah gave out.
Starting point is 00:15:00 Well, that's just really not practical from a political standpoint when you're talking about tying her message with socialism. And that's really been the only coalescing message around the Democrats. I think the American family is going to care about traditional values instead. OK, far left socialist. Oprah is a far left socialist and who uses companies to like finance her show and then uses that as an advertising at rev like i fox come on come on they just think they're hoping that people just saw oprah there and assumed based on their not having ever seen anything about oprah other than the giveaways who cannot see anything about oprah yeah they're assuming that people are going to be like, oh, she showed up
Starting point is 00:15:46 there, she probably gave away a bunch of cars. That must have been what happened. Well, here's my thing, is that she's worth $4 billion, and that to me is an uber-capitalist. Like all socialists, she's worth $4 billion. Hell yeah. It's just, the funny part
Starting point is 00:16:02 was at the beginning of that clip, all the women were like praising her, though. It's just so weird part was at the beginning of that clip, all the women were like praising her, though. Yeah. It's just so weird because, you know, we grew up with it. We watched her and she's such a good person. And we've seen it. And then like they had to like remember that they were Fox drones. And then like the programming had to kick in.
Starting point is 00:16:17 It was like, she's a socialist. It's a, yeah, it's a new take on Oprah. Let's put it that way honestly you might win people over if they think socialism is getting free ugg boots right and free cars and shit right like uh but again so that wasn't just the only time fox came for oprah uh then later on in the day uh one of their contributors had an interesting take on i guess how celebrities don't necessarily work well in politics. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:16:46 Just try and wrap your head around this one. I think the problem with celebrities, are you against myself, is that they are in a very different financial status than the people that are listening to them. Oprah Winfrey is one of the wealthiest women in the world, is talking to people in Marietta, Georgia. People hate that. What?
Starting point is 00:17:04 What? What? People can't deal with a politician who's wealthy. What is? What? I'm speechless. That doesn't even, that just doesn't warrant any kind of, I can't even dignify that with a response. I mean, the president himself is a celebrity who has no idea how regular people live, how common people live. Right. How working people live how common people live right how
Starting point is 00:17:25 working people live like but he is the human embodiment of mr monopoly he is like a poor person's idea of a rich person right and that is his whole thing that's all he was that was his entire like brand prior to running for presidency at which point he was like oh also racism right and yeah but they instead instead of focusing on that, they just chose to attack the fact that Oprah's rich. Like, that's the whole, that's their guy's whole thing, man. Yeah, but it's going to work. It's going to, I feel like when Fox News says anything,
Starting point is 00:17:56 their minions kind of, like, just respond to it. The hypocrisy of it is just so absurd and so over the top. It's, they can say whatever they want and it'll work with people. And there are even stories coming out now about how even increasingly, even when confronted with facts, many people on the right just outright
Starting point is 00:18:15 opt for their fantasy world because they can't handle looking at something that might be objectively true that could conflict with their ideology. No, no, no, self-preservation. I'm going to stick my head into the sand. So anyway, don't cover Oprah. Oprah is a force to be reckoned with.
Starting point is 00:18:32 And also, I will say when Mike Pence was like, this isn't Hollywood when he was talking about Georgia, I would like to remind people Georgia has, I don't know how many productions happen in Georgia. Georgia might as well be Hollywood as well. So come on now. There's so much money going in there. Yeah. Anyway. I was reading an Economist article today.
Starting point is 00:18:50 No big deal. And they said, once reasoned debate loses its power to win arguments, democracy cannot function. Which, yeah, we all know that. But they were writing about this upcoming election. They're, you know, down the middle, but lean somewhat conservative economically. And they're even like, guys, this is really bad. This is bad for the world at this point. We're going to have to begin starting debates with people
Starting point is 00:19:17 about, OK, do we believe in atoms first? Right. Let's start there. Like, on an atomic level, are we on the same page? I believe in atoms and Eves, motherfucker. Sorry, I should not have done the accent. I should not have done the accent. I apologize.
Starting point is 00:19:31 There's nothing about Southern people that makes them any less intelligent. Yeah, you should say, I like Adams and Eves, sir. Anyway. I like Adams and Eves, bro. There you go. I don't know. That's my best attempt at some kind of Southern accent. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:19:47 Anyways, guys, speaking of The Economist, the UK airports have a passenger too lit problem on their hands. I don't know if you guys have flown. In Europe, it's really easy to get around on Ryanair and EasyJet and things like that. And because of that, a lot of people, they take quick trips to just get to vacation spots. And some people like to have a few drinks before they board the plane. But in places like Gatwick and Stansted Airport, those London area airports, they've noticed they're having problems with people getting Vegas Strip drunk.
Starting point is 00:20:22 By the time they're on the plane, like dudes just screaming at each other, like having conversations out loud. There's a guy like a Tinkerbell costume who had to be like taken off because he was way too fucked up. Wait, he got so drunk that he ended up in a Tinkerbell costume? No, I think he boarded the plane in a Tinkerbell costume. What is going on there? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:20:39 He just, I think it was probably a stag do as they call it at a bachelor party or something. Yeah. I think it was probably a stag do as they call it, a bachelor party or something. Yeah. But, you know, when they look at the stats, right, they say in 2015, there were 195 incidents of what they call serious disruption on UK flights. But that climbed to 415 incidents in 2016 and 417 in 2017. So basically it more than doubled in one year. And so now they're trying to figure out a lot of people, including Ryanair themselves, are like, we got to sort out how fucked up people are getting in the airport before they get on the plane. Right.
Starting point is 00:21:11 And recently when I was in Europe, when I flew to Copenhagen from England, I noticed in the terminal there's people getting literati in there. Like, it was not a game. And I was impressed. You know, they look like they were having fun. But at the same time, it was a little I was like, OK, well, I guess they just keep serving them even though they're like stumbling up to the bar. So now they're like, you know, people are proposing things like, you know, limit to two like a two drink minimum or eliminate alcohol sales before 10 a.m. But they say a lot of the problem, too, is that people just
Starting point is 00:21:41 get on the plane with like duty-free alcohol and then they just start pounding that on the flight oh well then that's just people not knowing how to be adults like yeah what the fuck is wrong with you at that point they're treating like a school bus field trip well here's my thing looking at this were they brown like i feel like this is like a white privilege problem in some ways because like a brown person walks up onto an airplane and if they just look at the flight attendants wrong, they get kicked off the plane, which is something that happened a year or two ago. And there's so many incidences, which I've been documenting in my work, of people who are flying while brown and who get kicked off the plane for the stupidest things. Yeah, it could be.
Starting point is 00:22:19 I mean, I have no idea. But I know they like to drink. They like to party over there. It's funny, too, because like you were saying, there was a black doctor on a flight who was trying to give another passenger medical attention. I remember this. And they were like grilling him on whether or not he was a doctor. Come the fuck on. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:22:37 Get help. Yeah. He's a doctor. The only people who scam like that are the people who say they know sign language. That's the one thing we've seen over and over where people don't know sign language. And then they go up there and just start throwing up gang signs like they're communicating to the people. Yeah. There's a reason there's a phrase white boy drunk, though, because that is that is a thing that.
Starting point is 00:22:57 Yeah. You just have the privilege to just be as drunk as you want to be at any time anywhere. as drunk as you want to be at any time, anywhere. I've never done the drinking thing, like drinking before a flight. Nah. I mean, you might have people have a glass of wine. What if you're up all night in Vegas and then you just show up to the plane?
Starting point is 00:23:17 Right. Yeah, I can see that. But there are people, you show up for a morning flight and they're at the bar having a Bloody Mary. And I think it's just an anxiety thing but i just like hangovers are too bad for me to do that like i don't want to be hung over when i get wherever i'm going got the spirit bro right to get smizzash before you get on the plane yeah if you're a millennial i think maybe right well i need to work on my millennialness i'm right on the cusp. You're on the cusp, dude. I'm working hard.
Starting point is 00:23:46 Dude, join Gen X, man. Seriously. All right, we're going to take a quick break. We'll be right back. Daphne Caruana Galizia was a Maltese investigative journalist who on October 16, 2017, was murdered. There are crooks everywhere you look now. The situation is desperate. My name is Manuel Delia. I am one of the hosts of Crooks Everywhere, a podcast that unhurts the plot to murder a one-woman Wikileaks. Daphne exposed the culture
Starting point is 00:24:22 of crime and corruption that were turning her beloved country into a mafia state. And she paid the ultimate price. This summer, the nation watched as the Republican nominee for president was the target of two assassination attempts separated by two months. These events were mirrored nearly 50 years ago when President Gerald Ford faced two attempts on his life in less than three weeks. President Gerald R. Ford came stunningly close to being the victim of an assassin today. These are the only two times we know of that a woman has tried to assassinate a U.S. president. One was the protege of infamous cult leader Charles Manson.
Starting point is 00:26:22 I always felt like Lynette was kind of this right-hand woman. The other, a middle-aged housewife working undercover for the FBI in a violent revolutionary underground. Identified by police as Sarah Jean Moore. The story of one strange and violent summer. This is Rip Current. Available now with new episodes every Thursday.
Starting point is 00:26:43 Listen on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. I've been thinking about you. I want you back in my life. It's too late for that. I have a proposal for you. Come up here and document my project. All you need to do is record everything like you always do. One session.
Starting point is 00:27:04 24 hours. BPM 110. 120. She's terrified. Should we wake her up? Absolutely not. What was that? You didn't figure it out?
Starting point is 00:27:18 I think I need to hear you say it. That was live audio of a woman's nightmare. This machine is approved and everything? You're allowed to be doing this? We passed the review board a year ago. We're not hurting people. There's nothing dangerous about what you're doing. They're just dreams.
Starting point is 00:27:37 Dream Sequence is a new horror thriller from Blumhouse Television, iHeartRadio, and Realm. Listen to Dream Sequence on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. And we're back. And as we're recording this, Super Producer Anna Hosnia just informed us that Alec Baldwin has been arrested
Starting point is 00:28:01 for punching somebody over a parking spot, which not overly surprising. I'm surprised, really. I mean, Alec Baldwin seems been arrested for punching somebody over a parking spot, which not overly surprised. I'm surprised. Yeah. Really. I mean, Alec Baldwin seems like a very- You see how he treats his kids?
Starting point is 00:28:11 Yeah. Yeah. I mean, calling your daughter a pig is terrible, actually. No. Of course he did, because he's a fucking maniac. Although, I was just looking at Trump on some some news clip and I like out of the corner of my eye, I was like, oh, is that Alec Baldwin doing Trump? Like Trump is turning into Alec Baldwin's impression. Like Alec Baldwin's impression saw the future of Trump and is just
Starting point is 00:28:35 like his face is like collapsing in on itself. I still think Anthony Atamanek still does the best Trump. Oh yeah, for sure. No, I've never thought Alec Baldwin's Trump was worth a damn. But like now it's like almost starting to resent. Trump is almost starting to resemble. It always looks like Trump after he just like sucked on a lemon or something. And now Trump is just getting that permanent lemon suck face. The soul is imploding. Yeah. Well, speaking of our fearless leader, the president recently made a comment about how the army would shoot back at any migrants that threw rocks at the border as the caravan approaches. People in the military and soldiers who have any experience in war zones or just anywhere said, oh, we get rocks thrown at us all the time. And shooting the people who throw them is a war crime, motherfucker.
Starting point is 00:29:29 Like, that is not how we get down. But he said he would consider rocks firearms. Because they're fire. Right. I don't know. I still don't understand. Yeah, the reason we bring this up is because in Nigeria, there was a demonstration of about 1,000 Shiite Muslims
Starting point is 00:29:47 who were protesting the release of one of their leaders, this guy, Sheik Ibrahim Zakhzaki. And he was detained back in 2015 after what the Nigerian government called a clash, but they ended up killing about 1,000 of their members. And these protests led to basically the Nigerian army firing live rounds at the protest. And according to the group, they say the number is close to 50 people that were killed. The government says it was only six. But this we only shot six unarmed civilians. Yeah, well, that was sort of their take, because this is what these oppressive regimes do. So after all this outrage over it, the Nigerian Army's Twitter account just tweeted a video of Trump saying this exact thing about how rocks could be equated to firearms.
Starting point is 00:30:31 And then it said, watch this video and make your own deductions. Oh. So again, these are the knock-on effects of Trump becoming the figurehead of the United States. Not to say that these kinds of human rights violations just started happening because of Trump. But now it's just interesting to now be like, well, this guy just said it. Yeah. And so that's our response is tweeting a fucking video. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:30:50 Also, Nigerian Army has their own Twitter account where they're tweeting out. They get messy like that. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. They also tweeted out this really hilarious meme, though. You guys should check it out. No, I'm joking.
Starting point is 00:31:02 Yeah. It's interesting. I mean, it's again, like we always talk about how much he resonates with these strong men uh leaders and things like that and these despotic regimes and like it's just really fucking disgusting i mean they all sad they all use fake news now like they all putin everybody uh mbs they all love that fake news shit because he made it work he i mean what we were talking about up top that the economist was talking about, once you have a world where people can just dismiss all facts, all truth, then you're
Starting point is 00:31:34 in a good place as a strongman dictator. So he's breaking new ground. He's really avant-garde, except it's a military guard and they're arresting everybody. I think what people forget in America is that the international news is watching Trump. And everything that's happening internationally, like these elections that are happening tomorrow, really are resonating internationally. And what Trump says affects everyone and not like literally everyone in the world. Right. everyone and not like literally everyone in the world because all of the international policy is predicated on how Trump moves forward with his speaking. Right. Yeah. So that's a great segue. We're going to talk about the elections that are happening tomorrow. The New York Times kind of did
Starting point is 00:32:18 a recap of where we're at with the House. And, you know, they acknowledged up top it was on their podcast, the Daily or Daily? I don't know. I don't know. Michael Burberry. Not familiar. Yeah, Michael Burberry. Some third-rate podcast. Yeah, some third-rate podcast, some third-rate daily news podcast, where they acknowledged up top, you know, that we had it wrong.
Starting point is 00:32:44 Where they acknowledged up top that we had it wrong. We said 85% chance that Hillary wins heading into things. And people were just like, well, that's pretty good. We win. And didn't bother to vote enough. But their polling expert pointed out that if you're just looking at the live odds in a sporting event, an American football team that has a one touchdown lead going into the fourth quarter has an 85% chance of winning. You wouldn't turn that game off. You'd be like, oh shit, this is going to be a good finish. So that's about actually where the Democrats are when it comes to taking the House. They're at about 85% on 538. And the poll expert was breaking it down that the Democrats need 23 Republican
Starting point is 00:33:29 seats. They need to take away 23 Republican seats in order to win control of the House. And he said they're comfortable in about 12. And then there are these 30 that are too close to call and they're not getting any more Democratic as we approach the election. Now, that might sound like, OK, well, the odds are in Democrats' favor because, you know, let's say they're all toss-ups. It'll go 50-50. That's still enough to get to 23, except he pointed out that's not how national House
Starting point is 00:34:01 elections work a lot of the time. The too-close-to-calls all tend to break in one direction or the other because they're all reacting to the same stimulus and the same trends. So that begs the question, what trends may they be reacting to this election? And they kind of gave their ideas and they still made it sound like a toss up. But I just feel like worst case but very realistic scenario.
Starting point is 00:34:29 And the one that I find the most convincing is that this Trump fear mongering and like race baiting and just like swinging the wedge issues around like an axe murderer have probably worked. Like they've successfully recreated the conditions of 2016, the Kavanaugh thing, basically recreated the protect our white men way of life, fuck me too thing that the Access Hollywood tapes did. And Trump has brought back
Starting point is 00:34:59 all of the racist stuff and the immigration stuff. And arguably he's been more successful this time because he is the president now. And back then we were like, ah, he's just some hack who's going to get swept in a landslide. But Republicans are going to vote. There was a point where people were like, it's going to be a blue wave because Republicans aren't engaged. I think Republicans are going to vote in unprecedented numbers for an election where they have the White House. And it's because no major American figure has been this openly
Starting point is 00:35:33 racist and shamelessly populist and just shamelessly shameless in the history of our culture. And his approval rating is rebounding everywhere and i don't know republicans are going to turn the fuck out possibly in unprecedented numbers and it just comes down to the democrats like whether democratic voters are also going to turn out in unprecedented numbers um and it really comes down to millennials to be honest because they're just at the point where millennials... They, Jack? Yeah. That's right. You guys told me I'm a Gen X. Okay.
Starting point is 00:36:08 All right. I'm just making sure. I'm on the cusp. Okay. So you're back. Okay. I'm 80. I'm back with Gen X.
Starting point is 00:36:13 We'll see if you guys fuck this up. All right. Pepsi generation next over here. That's right. But millennials are just passing baby boomers for having more adults in the world than baby boomers and like it's there for the taking right but there's a poll that says 30 like one-third of millennials say they're definitely going to vote yeah which isn't enough well 80 of millennials have follow-through exactly yeah you can say all that you want to to me. Get your ass to the pulse.
Starting point is 00:36:45 A third is not good. Like a third is not enough. Like they need to show out in huge numbers. So I don't know, man. I think this is not necessarily going to go in the direction that everybody was thinking and that even we were thinking in like a few weeks. I mean, we'll only know till we know. Right.
Starting point is 00:37:04 I think we'll only know till we know, you know, like I think we'll only know till we know. Right. I'm optimistic that I think in certain races, people are very motivated. I think in other places, maybe not so much, but there's definitely, there's energy on both sides. That's for sure. And it's, it's only slowly ramped up on the right.
Starting point is 00:37:19 But I think even to the point about the, all the toss up races, I mean, the fact that those are even tight is a good sign because a lot of those seats were like solidly red seats. That's true. And the thing to look into that means that there's some kind of shift happening there. Hopefully, it breaks the way we need it to. But, yeah, I think there's another thing that kind of gets lost in that analysis about a lot of those seats. It's like, I don't know if we talked about this, but like there was a Washington Post poll that was like, oh, it's things are getting tight. We don't know about those blue wave thing.
Starting point is 00:37:50 But they were analyzing, I think, something like 69 different toss up districts. And they were noting that like 61 of those were solidly Republican ones that were becoming more blue. Right. So, you know, hopefully there is that momentum can carry through. But yeah, I think the bottom line is complacency is not going to help anybody. Yeah. And like the to begin with, the election map was really unfavorable to Democrats just overall. So even though we're seeing a shift towards like some counties turning blue, it's still, you know, not necessarily going to shift all the way blue just
Starting point is 00:38:26 because they got bluer and i i just feel like the stuff that our listeners are seeing in the mainstream media that we're seeing that we like we're saying pence took an l with the oprah thing right but that's being circulated on their side as just like a total fucking win for pence and trump and the right. Because he said this isn't Hollywood. Right. Because he said this isn't Hollywood. How do you feel about that?
Starting point is 00:38:50 Fuck yeah. A, I don't really trust polls. Yeah. Right. Because how are they getting their information? Are they calling voters? Are they knocking on doors? And then B, I'm really thinking about redistricting and census and the long term.
Starting point is 00:39:03 Because the reason why these districts are so red is because of how redistricting happened in 2010. And now we're facing the 2020 election. So there's going to be redistricting after that. There's all this work being done to dissuade immigrant voters from doing from signing up for census. They're trying to, like, make people who are I think immigration is up to be written down for census, like your immigration status. Right. Like asking the citizenship question on the census. Right. And so all these, I think we do have a lot riding tomorrow, but I do think that we need to take a bigger step back and look at the system that's in place that's keeping the Republicans in power and
Starting point is 00:39:40 how these precincts have been chopped up. And that's kind of the bigger fight that we need to fight. That and also like how voters are being purged from the rolls, which is another one. Yeah. And I think that's why we also reiterate, don't just vote for those big ticket items. Don't just vote for your senators and congresspeople. Vote for the secretary of states and attorney generals and your local politicians, too, and your state legislatures, because those are the people who are actually going.
Starting point is 00:40:04 Those are the people who have a little more more power the most power in terms of redistricting and things like that and who you select to put in the governor's house as well so yeah like you guys talked about on the episode that i missed last week you can bring your phone into the voting booth yeah i know a lot of people think you don't you can fucking bring a book whatever you need to just can't bring another person with you no you can't bring an interpreter right whatever you need to. You just can't bring another person with you. You can bring an interpreter. No, you can bring an interpreter. Oh, an interpreter, right. Yeah. They just can't tell you what to, they can't be like, yo.
Starting point is 00:40:30 Hey, yo. Look, they don't know what I'm saying. Let's talk about Steve King. Do we have to? Yeah. I mean, I think we just need to talk about, we all know he's a fucking racist Nazi motherfucker and he's, he his ass gets voted out iowa please do the right fucking thing and show this man the fucking door if you guys
Starting point is 00:40:50 aren't listening to behind the bastards already that's a podcast on our network with robert evans from cracked and it's an amazing podcast but he had uh cody johnston and katie stole on from uh all three formerly of cracked uh to talk about all the white supremacists who are running this midterm. And Steve King is a big one. Well, yes. I mean, look, for those of you who don't know, suffice to say, he's just a Nazi. He was just in Austria.
Starting point is 00:41:19 He met up with some neo-Nazis in Austria, came back and was like, hey, if they came to the U.S., they'd probably be Republican. No, they would be Republicans. And we already know that. But the reason we bring it up, because last week his shit is melting down because I think Iowans are starting to actually find a threshold they're not willing to cross with his rhetoric. I mean, because he's been in office for a while, but now just sort of the aggressive way he's speaking is starting to turn people off. His Democratic challenger is closing in on him.
Starting point is 00:41:47 He's losing money left and right, like Land O'Lakes butter is like, sorry, not fucking with you anymore. And apparently that's big in Iowa if Land O'Lakes is not fucking with you. He was doing a presser or something right before the election. And young man just asked him a question about the parallels in his ideology with the synagogue shooter. And the reaction of Steve King was very telling. And the terrorist who committed this crime, he was quoted as saying, they bring invaders in that kill our people. I can't sit back and watch our people get slaughtered. You, Steve King, have been quoted as saying,
Starting point is 00:42:25 we can't restore our civilization with other people's babies. You and the shooter both share an ideology that is No, don't you do that. anti-immigration. Do not associate me with that shooter. I knew you were an ambusher when you walked in the room. An ambusher. I knew you were an ambusher.
Starting point is 00:42:43 He knew off top what was going on. And he's so trying so desperately to obscure the fact that his ideology is one in the same with this man. Yeah. It's just, again, it's just very telling when you see someone get so defensive. Racists hate being called out for what they are. And Nazis hate being called out for what they are because they know it's shitty. Or maybe in this case, I don't know if Steve King is playing some kind of real warped mental jujitsu
Starting point is 00:43:10 to try and back like, well, I'm different. I'm not from Germany, so I'm not a Nazi. Yeah. By the end, he's like, get this guy out of here. I mean, can someone... His voice is cracking. And it's just funny because this dude is just sitting there calmly. He seems like he's like 16 years old and he's like... No, I think he's a little bit older.
Starting point is 00:43:25 Yeah, he's a young guy. Hey, Gen Xer. He's like eight. I don't know. And he's sitting there with his fidget spinner. With his iPad. And he's probably playing Fortnite. On his Tide Pod.
Starting point is 00:43:37 Yeah. Playing Fortnite on his Tide Pod. On his Game Boy. And he's just calmly asking him the question. And Steve King, yeah, he's just calmly, like, asking him the question, and Steve King just loses his fucking mind. Like, you didn't see it as far as it went. Because I think he wants people who are maybe still ignorant to the fact of how overtly racist he is,
Starting point is 00:43:57 he doesn't want people to start putting things together. That just seemed like, out of pure survival, he's like, ah, don't say that! It's supposed to be dog whistling only. Right, exactly. He's like, don't put my shit side by side with actual. We know what it is. We can't restore our civilization.
Starting point is 00:44:14 Get the fuck out of here, Poppy, because civilization is coming. Now, this is a lean Republican district still, according to the Cook Political Report. But it was likely Republican not too long ago. So it's moving in the direction of the Democrats. But this dude is openly a white supremacist. He openly supports just straight up Nazi policies and Nazi ideals. And he's running against a guy who's like a true outsider.
Starting point is 00:44:46 He's like a minor league baseball player who's just like, shit, man, I've got better ideas than this guy. This Nazi. And the more people have seen him, the more they've been like, oh, shit. This guy's a real guy. Yeah, we're Republicans, but this is like a real dude. And like, you know, he's an outsider who might actually get things done. And the more they see Steve King, the more they're just like, holy shit.
Starting point is 00:45:07 This guy's a lunatic. Anyways, it'll be interesting to see how that race ends up. Who are you running against? He's running against J.D. Shulton, who's a performer, a former professional pitcher who's, you know, these former minor league baseball players from hollywood with their liberal policies uh but he actually just got a big infusion of cash uh he's a left hander yeah so we know what that means i'm left-handed yeah then you're a socialist you know oh you're left-handed we just high-fived with our with hand. With your left hand. I saw that. Wow. Lefty power. But, yeah, Steve King has just been staying in power on the backs of, like, Koch brothers' money. And, you know, when you actually go and talk to Iowans, they're like, we don't like this motherfucker.
Starting point is 00:45:58 His district surely does, though. Yeah. Like, one of the crooked media guys was saying that he did a lot of work in Iowa during the Obama administration. He was like, oh, man, this is definitely going the way of Democrats because everybody's really woke and liberal there. And when you talk to them, they're like, yeah, we don't like Steve King, but it's just the other options haven't been good. So, yeah, we'll see where this goes. They put a dog up there. Anyone.
Starting point is 00:46:26 Anyone but a fucking Nazi. People do love dogs. Jack, can you tell us a little bit about the Catholic Church and how messy it is? Speaking of anyone but a Nazi. So we all witnessed the retirement of a pope, the first retirement of a pope, I think in 600 years, about five, six years ago. And so I
Starting point is 00:46:48 assumed that dude, like evil, conservative, Ratzenberger, Pope youth Nazi, Nazi youth, that he had just gone off onto like some pasture. He like went to some farm to run around with all the good dogs whose owners can't take care of them anymore. But like, I just imagine he was out of the picture. Right. And lately there's been some background noise about the cool Pope being forced to resign because- Comparatively cool. Yeah, comparatively cool Pope.
Starting point is 00:47:16 To a Nazi youth. Yes. Because of his response to some of the sexual abuse scandals that are plaguing the church and that it was a group of conservatives that are trying to force this through because they hate how liberal and, you know, lit, as you guys say, he is with his fire ass liberal policies of gay people might be all right and divorced people can go to church. I know he's really out here, but anyways, he has been at the forefront of like holding bishops. He's been way better about holding the Catholic church to account when it comes to sexual
Starting point is 00:47:52 abuse. Uh, he fucked up a couple of times and the conservatives are just, you know, pouncing on that, even though the conservative Catholic church is like way worse about that. But the thing I didn't know is that the conservatives are being led by the Nazi Pope. Nazi Pope has been behind the scenes. So when he resigned, he didn't leave the Vatican. He had like- He just left the room?
Starting point is 00:48:15 Four months before he resigned, he knew he was in some shit. There was like all these investigations being done. Like that's why he resigned is because there was like a, you know, gay prostitution ring that was being run through like, through the Vatican. Like all these documents were revealed and like everybody, everybody who worked for him, like all the top cardinals were just these backstabbing messy bitches who were just like, so like all about power did not seem to have the values of the Catholic church. So he knew he was going to have to resign. And so there was this one like place,
Starting point is 00:48:49 a monastery where, you know, like high up cardinals got to chill and he basically renovated it starting four months before he resigned and made it into like this lavish palace. And then was like, okay, that's where I'm going. And now he lives in this palace in the back
Starting point is 00:49:06 of the Vatican. Wait, did he use the church's money to make this? Oh, yeah. What the fuck? Interesting. If you guys haven't seen Nazi Pope's his name was Benedict. If you haven't seen his gear, like what he wore, he immediately started wearing these red leather
Starting point is 00:49:21 slippers that are just like the fanciest shoes that you've ever seen. He dresses like a pimp. wearing these red leather slippers that are just the fanciest shoes that you've ever seen. He dresses like a pimp. He dresses exactly. Like the old player balls, player's ball. He just went full pimp hat. He's like, I don't have to wear white anymore.
Starting point is 00:49:36 I'm going to wear red. Yeah. And so he put his main dude as essentially the chief of staff in the Vatican for whoever succeeded him so that he could still like spy and like pull the strings from behind the scenes and that's partially why cool Pope like lives in a shitty dorm now is first of all because he's like I took a vow of poverty when I became a priest but it's also because he doesn't want evil Pope spies seeing what he's up to.
Starting point is 00:50:06 So he just lives in this apartment building on the outskirts of the Vatican while fucking Nazi Pope is in his palace just pulling the strings, trying to take his ass out. Sounds like a Hallmark Christmas movie. Exactly. And then they're going to move out to the country together
Starting point is 00:50:21 and realize that- They're all the same. Yeah, exactly. They're going to move out to the country together and realize that. They're all the same. Yeah. They're both shitty. Anyways, it's just a crazy story that I didn't know was going on behind the scenes. Yeah, because I thought we're always used to the Pope just dying. Yeah. And then there being a new Pope.
Starting point is 00:50:36 And that makes sense. It's been 600 years since he, see, he's sneaky. Yeah. When you have two Popes alive, like the author of this piece in Vanity Fair was saying, this is the first time there's been two popes alive at the same time. And it's not like when you say, I retire, you stop being the voice box of God. It's not like God throws you a retirement party.
Starting point is 00:50:56 So his followers are still like, no, that's our guy. He doesn't stop being. What does his position become? Does he become like a bishop or something? He gets a demotion? I don't know. Or he's just like former pope? Yeah, former pope.
Starting point is 00:51:08 There isn't really, that I'm aware of, there's not like a name for it because there hasn't been one in 600 years. I think they still call him Benedict, which is his pope name. Benedict. But this author is basically predicting there's going to be a conflict between, you know, liberal pope because this pope is the most liberal. He's like moving things forward for the Catholic Church more than any pope in like hundreds or even like millennia. And so he you have like this especially conservative pope followed directly by this liberal pope. And both of them are alive at the same time, which is something that hasn't happened in a long time.
Starting point is 00:51:45 And he's saying the Catholic Church is headed for a schism that is going to be the biggest conflict in the Catholic Church since Martin Luther. Oh, since the Great Schism? Yeah, exactly. Yeah. So we'll see. Man, it's been a while.
Starting point is 00:52:01 What was that, 1054? Yeah, that was a while back. Hell. All right. Well, hey, been a while. What was that, 1054? Yeah, that was a while back. Hell. All right. Well, hey, shows you no matter what the workplace is messy. Well, it also shows no matter where we are in this world, Nazism is kind of growing. Right?
Starting point is 00:52:17 There's still conservatives out here just trying to fuck things up for people who aren't to them. Yeah. Oh, God. The fact that he cheated and just renovated a fucking monastery to be like, okay, I'm going to live there now. Right. And I used the funds to do that.
Starting point is 00:52:34 That's some grade-A scamming, my man. I know, for real. Also, one detail of Ratzinger is, is that right, Ratzinger? I don't know. I confused his last name with the guy from Cheers. But anyways, one detail is that he retired with this dude who is like his right-hand man, who is beautiful. Everybody's like, this is a beautiful man.
Starting point is 00:52:58 He's actually pretty stunning. Yeah. And he was like the- Oh, my goodness. I haven't seen him yet. He's pretty. I kind of don't want to see him. I mean, also side by side, the Pope is very old looking,
Starting point is 00:53:14 and this guy is very young and strapping. He's just got an inner glow. Oh, Miss Gentis, hallelujah. Look at him. He was the inspiration for one of the fashion weeks in 2007 or 2008. They were just like, this man is so beautiful, who's always around the Pope, that he is going to inspire our 2008 fashion week line. But anyways, so the rumor is that their relationship is more than his right hand. That they're booed up. Yeah, they're booed up, and that's what was going to come out.
Starting point is 00:53:51 Wow. Hey, he got good taste, though. But this dude is- His loafers are on point, and his man's is a snack. He actually is. But his man's is one of the main dudes who's pushing his agenda out there. Oh, for him. Yeah, for him.
Starting point is 00:54:06 And they call him what? Is it a nickname? Yeah, I think it's Bella Giorgio. Gorgeous George. Oh, my God. Oh, my God. Bella Giorgio, please. It is really, though.
Starting point is 00:54:18 I mean, the new cool pope who is just cool for being a Pope is still like his values are pretty good. Like for like as somebody who grew up Catholic, like a lot of the shit he says, it's like, well finally somebody like seems like they actually read the Bible or something. Like he like compassion. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:54:36 Compassion. Yeah. That seems to have been missing for a long time. And now there's a dude who, so yeah, as cool as a Nazi Pope might seem with his dope shoes and his uh beautiful boyfriend uh i'm still pulling for cool pope guys you heard it here first glad that's the daily zeitgeist catholicism minute that's who jack is endorsing
Starting point is 00:54:59 uh all right we're gonna take a quick break. We'll be right back. Daphne Caruana Galizia was a Maltese investigative journalist who on October 16th, 2017, was murdered. This summer, the nation watched as the Republican nominee for president was the target of two assassination attempts separated by two months. These events were mirrored nearly 50 years ago when President Gerald Ford faced two attempts on his life in less than three weeks.
Starting point is 00:57:19 President Gerald R. Ford came stunningly close to being the victim of an assassin today. Gerald R. Ford came stunningly close to being the victim of an assassin today. And these are the only two times we know of that a woman has tried to assassinate a U.S. president. One was the protege of infamous cult leader Charles Manson. I always felt like Lynette was kind of his right-hand woman. The other, a middle-aged housewife working undercover for the FBI in a violent revolutionary underground. Identified by police as Sarah Jean Moore. The story of one strange and violent summer. This is Rip Current.
Starting point is 00:57:52 Available now with new episodes every Thursday. Listen on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. I've been thinking about you. I want you back in my life. It's too late for that. I have a thinking about you. I want you back in my life. It's too late for that. I have a proposal for you. Come up here and document my project. All you need to do is record everything like you always do.
Starting point is 00:58:15 One session. 24 hours. BPM 110. 120. She's terrified. Should we wake her up? Absolutely not. What was that?
Starting point is 00:58:28 You didn't figure it out? I think I need to hear you say it. That was live audio of a woman's nightmare. This machine is approved and everything? You're allowed to be doing this? We passed the review board a year ago. We're not hurting people. There's nothing dangerous about what you're doing
Starting point is 00:58:45 they're just dreams dream sequence is a new horror thriller from blumhouse television iheart radio and realm listen to dream sequence on the iheart radio app apple podcasts or wherever And we're back. And Miles, you pointed out this AV Club article that got us talking. Yeah, well, just merely the headline, I was like, that is such a great question. And AV Club, I think they were just asking around their office to the editors over there, just saying, what's the first movie soundtrack you loved? And I really, you realize that is something, you know, back in our day, in the millennial age, we used to buy CDs of soundtracks.
Starting point is 00:59:30 Obviously. Jack, I think you bought eight tracks, maybe, or LP records. Yeah. LP records. That's right. Yes, for when Saturday Night Fever came out. I think that was your favorite. Mm-hmm.
Starting point is 00:59:39 But yeah, I'm just- I'm so confused by your ages, by these references. Oh, yeah. I'm 34. Got it. So, yeah. I'm 34. Got it. So and Jack is in. Yeah, I'm in my early 80s. Actually, he was born in the early 80s.
Starting point is 00:59:51 I mean, but yeah, it just got me thinking like that is such a great question. I think one of the first soundtracks I like lost my mind over, which is weird, is the Baz Luhrmann Romeo and Juliet. Oh, my gosh. Me, too. For real, right? So good. Yes.
Starting point is 01:00:07 I played that on repeat. I had two of them because I lost one. Yeah. So good. Yes, dude, Local God. Still. It was one of my favorite songs. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:00:14 And what else? The Garbage Song, Crush, was it? What is it called? And the thing about that CD was you had to listen to it in sequence because it was lined up
Starting point is 01:00:23 to kind of go with the mood of the movie. Right. So good. It had, my God, I mean. I dusted it off last year because I went to the cemetery to watch when they were doing the summer series. Oh, Sinespia? Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 01:00:34 Yeah, and I watched it again and I was like, oh. That has some. And then they had a volume too. That's when you know a soundtrack's good because the studios get greedy and they're like, can we milk this movie for another one? It wasn't that good. That one was a dud. Yeah. But, okay, number one, Crush was on there, right?
Starting point is 01:00:48 That was a garbage song. I would die for you. So good. And Local God by Everclear. Then the other one, dude, Kissing You by Desiree. Ooh, gives me chills. Then there was the other one, A Love Fool by the Cardigans. I mean, there were so many classics on there.
Starting point is 01:01:05 And even there's a Radiohead. Actually, that soundtrack started getting me more aware of Radiohead, too. Wait, what's the Radiohead song? Talk Show Host. Oh, interesting. Yeah. So 1994 was my year of the soundtrack. You were 28.
Starting point is 01:01:18 I was in my early 30s. Both Pulp Fiction and an equally classic movie, Above the Rim, both came out that year. And those soundtracks, those were in heavy rotation. And I actually, I remember going on a family vacation and Pulp Fiction was something the whole family could listen to in the car. Like even the interludes in between?
Starting point is 01:01:44 Yeah. I love you, pumpkin. I love you, love you honey bunny everybody be cool this is a fucking you're like yeah yeah this is great jack but yeah i was heavy into that and uh reservoir dogs but after the fact like once the pulp fiction soundtrack was out i was i went back and checked out well yeah that uh that Above the Rim soundtrack, Suge Knight had that fucking thing on lock. That was the shit. I mean, that had regulators,
Starting point is 01:02:11 but then there was Lady of Rage had a good song on there. Afro Puffs. There was a song with Tretch and a bunch of my other favorite rappers at the time. I loved Tretch from Naughty by Nature back then. Did you used to wear overalls? Did you wear batting gloves? You know I did that shit.
Starting point is 01:02:30 Didn't Tretch used to rock the overalls, like the batting glove and the ski goggles and shit? He would wear it without a shirt underneath. I could not quite pull that off when I was 11. But you were wearing cross colors, right? Yeah, I was. You had the racism hat. I also could not pull that off,
Starting point is 01:02:46 according to the people in my town, because they all wanted to beat me up. Wait, so Taz, yours actually is the Romeo and Juliet soundtrack? Well, I think it's that or the Empire Records soundtrack, which is the other one that I was really into. Every time we used to get together in high school, that was the one movie we would keep renting. I don't know why we didn't buy it.
Starting point is 01:03:05 We'd play that on repeat. Say no more, mon amour. So good. That last song, the Sugar High song, was my anthem because I used to get really hyper in high school, so I'd always eat sugar and then cry really loudly. That's very on-brand.
Starting point is 01:03:21 Very on-brand. The song I was thinking of was Dog Pound for Life. Oh, yeah. Dog Pound for Life. Isn't that with Daz? This is Dog Pound for Life. I just don't give a fuck. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:03:33 Daz. There was, I think the songs I was thinking of are the bonus tracks, but Loyal to the Game by Tupac, Tretch, and Riddler. Yeah, that was the shit. The first bonus track I think I remember was at the end of Dookie,
Starting point is 01:03:49 the Green Day album. That was like the first time people were like, you know that last song? If you wait. If you listen to it. Yeah, and then like a song comes on
Starting point is 01:03:55 and it's like, this is weird. Yeah. Yeah, but I didn't, you know. Yeah. All those minutes spent
Starting point is 01:04:00 listening to Empty Space on. To Empty Sound, yes. And also on the end of the Jay-Z Unplugged album there's also a good hidden track too. Anyway, that's all I know. Should we keep it moving? Yeah, let's keep it moving.
Starting point is 01:04:11 Let's check out the Bloids. It's time for Bloid Watch. Life and Style, you guys, has a new twist on an old favorite. So we've talked about how they have remixed and just found different ways to report
Starting point is 01:04:29 that Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston have gotten back together just every which way. They're pregnant, they're married, even though they have not been pictured together. All of the pictures of them together are just Photoshopped. So Life and Style found a new way to get us interested in that story. They say, Jen in shock. They're dating.
Starting point is 01:04:51 Who's the they? It is Jennifer Aniston's ex. Justin Theroux. Justin Theroux and Angelina Jolie. What the fuck? Really? And then inside, right, it's always like a source says they saw them canoodling. Steamy texts and secret sleepovers.
Starting point is 01:05:08 And then that's just never backed up. Nobody saw this. It's just made up. But they sold all the magazines when Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt were together. And when the Angelina shit broke, they made just billions, I think. They must have just made. That was the heyday. Yeah, that was, they made just billions, I think. They must have just made. That was the heyday. Yeah, that was the heyday.
Starting point is 01:05:28 So they are just trying to recapture that glory. I like how that is the same thing with any sort of media-based industry. It's like, now how do we reboot this thing that's a real life event? Right.
Starting point is 01:05:37 What you got, Miles? Oh, in OK Magazine, they're saying that Meghan and Harry are leaving the royals for their baby. Harry vows, I won't let my child end up like Diana. Beautiful and...
Starting point is 01:05:50 I'm not sure. Famous? Are they teasing the conspiracy theory about her death because she was with Dodi Al-Fayed? Oh, because the queen killed her? Is that what they're trying to say? That being in the royal family comes with all these darkness or whatever? But inside, they're saying that he's willing to throw it all away including walking away from his title and his
Starting point is 01:06:08 150 million dollar trust fund plundered on the backs of people subjugated uh all around the world i'd imagine they said that no i i'm like wow they're so whoa yeah like god damn they're like have you been to the national history museum it It's all stolen shit. And, yeah, and then they're saying, like, Megan is kind of convincing him, like, California, man. It's the way to go. So they're going to leave all that so you can raise the baby to be a just dope-ass weed-smoking Californian. My gosh, the royal family is going to move to L.A.? Yo, that would be tight. That would be amazing.
Starting point is 01:06:38 And I'm saying if he moves here, I will befriend Harry because we have the exact same birthday. Oh, yeah. Obviously. And in my mind, that's all I have to say to him for us to just – the next move is us sparking a blunt. So I'll be like, hey, you know we have the same birthday. And he'll be like, you got weed? And I'm like, yes. Friendship achieved.
Starting point is 01:06:56 But, yeah, it's weird. When they talk in here about, like, the Diana thing, it's just sort of – they just say that Harry has experienced all the negatives that come with being part of, quote, the firm, explains the insider, referring to the 1997 death of his mother, Princess Diana, who was killed in a car crash while being chased by paparazzi. And the 1990 what movie, The Firm? Yeah, I don't, I mean, yeah, I guess they call, you know, like they call like, like gangs over the firms or whatever, like hooligans or like yeah they call them different they refer to themselves as firms but i don't know they still don't really quite connect how that has something to do with the fate of their child uh so i guess they just know they have to use like emotional stories like princess diana death baby yeah he know He doesn't like that. Bye-bye to California. Guys, Gwen and Blake, they're having a girl. Gwen Stefani
Starting point is 01:07:50 and Blake. Is this actually true, though? IVF miracle at 49. She's 49? That's crazy that she's 49. She looks amazing. What the fuck? Amazing. Turns out, when you actually read the article.
Starting point is 01:08:06 No, Jack, don't do this to me. Sorry to give and take away like that. But their evidence for this, other than sources say, which they never do. Don't say. Is that she was drinking water on Halloween. And her Halloween costume was skin tight, which wouldn't that mean that she was trying to cover up? They use like,
Starting point is 01:08:29 their excuses for calling someone pregnant are she's wearing baggy clothes. She's wearing skin tight clothes. She drank water on Halloween. Brad Pitt was walking down the street looking distressed. He got a woman pregnant was the logic they used in the past issue. And there's a fucking bombshell
Starting point is 01:08:46 in In Touch that I would have maybe bought this magazine had I not... Been stupider? Yeah, been dumber. So In Touch is only $3.99. No, that's not the bombshell.
Starting point is 01:09:01 It says, it's official. Kate named Queen. Dying Queen Elizabeth gives up throne. And they have a picture No, that's not the bombshell. It says, it's official. Kate named queen. Dying Queen Elizabeth gives up throne. And they have a picture with her wearing the throne and just looking. The crown. The crown and just looking. I just like the idea of having a throne on her head. And, you know, William gave Kate Diana's favorite crown.
Starting point is 01:09:23 They've got a little picture of him looking very regal. But then inside, what's actually being said? Just that sources say. Sources say. Sources say this, but they also make the point that the queen is a good business person. And from the queen's perspective, Charles is a douche. Oh. Basically.
Starting point is 01:09:44 He's not on brand for the Windsors. Have you ever, have you read like real stories about Prince Charles? Mm-mm. He's just like, you know, he's a hothouse flower in the sense that like he was raised as a prince and like, so he's just like, he still calls his mom mummy. Of course. Right? And he is just like.
Starting point is 01:09:59 He still has a wet nurse. Yeah. Basically. Like you would expect him to still have a wet nurse based on his behavior around others. And he still wears, like, stockings. Yeah. And he just, like, is... Mumsy.
Starting point is 01:10:09 He is literally the cartoon of, like, an entitled rich kid. I'm pretty sure there's a Hallmark movie about that. Yes. Oh, yes. It was called A Christmas Prince. There you go. On Netflix last year. But...
Starting point is 01:10:21 Well, what happens to the queen when she dies? Like, who's next? Or what's happening? It's Prince Charles. but uh well what happens to the queen when she dies like who's next or what's happening it's prince charles and they're they're making the point that like he's not going to be a good king it's going to be really bad for the royal family so the queen being the smart business woman that she is which i'm assuming that's true i don't know that she has a netflix series everybody seems to like it she can't just just be dumb. So, I mean.
Starting point is 01:10:46 I don't know. She was born into some gigantic empire. I don't know. It's an astute businesswoman. What makes her an interesting character on that Netflix series? Does she just sit there? I don't know. I don't like it. Oh.
Starting point is 01:10:58 That's for y'all, man. This is fun. I'm not interested in that shit. Yeah, no, me neither. But, yeah. So, I mean, they're just saying that she can pass the throne to a new generation, Kate and William. The Pepsi generation. She would skip over her son.
Starting point is 01:11:12 Yes. Give it to her grandson. Is that how that works? That's what they're saying. And I mean, they've never lied to me before. They've never lied once to me before. Yes. And then also in the Globe, I just have to say that they're trying to pin,
Starting point is 01:11:25 they found this woman who said she was partying with Chris Farley the night of his death, and she's like, I left Chris Farley to die after 17 hours of sex and drugs. I don't know why they're raising the specter of Chris Farley, but I don't know. Must be slow. Yeah. They're trying to pin it on a woman, you know? I don't know if I said this before on the show that when Chris Farley died, was that 96 or 97?
Starting point is 01:11:49 97. My mom came to pick me up from school and when she picked me up, she was like, you know, Chris Farley died. And I was like, oh my God, I got to tell my friend Chris because one of my friends Chris in school was like a Chris Farley fanatic. And I got out of my mom's car and I ran back on the school campus to find him just to tell him because this was before news or phones and shit. Phones, yeah.
Starting point is 01:12:08 Because you're a messy bitch. Yeah, and I'm a messy bitch and I wanted to see his soul die when I told him his best man died. So I said, oh my God, dude, Chris Farley died. And he goes, no, you're fucking lying. I go, no, dude, my mom just told me. He goes, well, your mom's a bitch. In a way, I'm so emotionally distraught.
Starting point is 01:12:23 I was like, and I didn't get mad. You know, normally if someone calls your mom a bitch, you're like, this probably put hands on you. But he was way bigger than me. He would have fucked me up. But I could just tell how emotionally he was. He fucking ran off. And I was just like, you know what? You got to heal in whatever way you got to.
Starting point is 01:12:36 And I know you don't mean my mother's a bitch because you like coming over and you respect my mom. Have you brought it up with him since then? Oh, yeah. We laugh about it all the time. Yeah. But I just want to introduce that. I like how you skipped over the actual cover story of George Clooney getting divorced with since then. Oh, yeah. We laugh about it all the time. Yeah. But I just want to introduce that again. I like how you skipped over the actual cover story of George Clooney getting divorced with Amal. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 01:12:49 I don't know. Because, yeah. Do you think that's real? Booze cheap? I don't know. I mean, because, again, all of these are owned by David Pecker, who loves Donald Trump. So whenever he can smear people who are, like, on the left, it'll always be like, Amal is, you know, the fucking money embezzler. And she might have ties to islamic extremist groups or something that's like these are the salacious
Starting point is 01:13:09 shit they have in there yeah but everybody who like worked like so like david spade phil hartman like mike myers all those dudes who like worked on the show back then adam sandler all say that he was just like in person the funniest human being that's ever existed. Chris Farley. I don't doubt it. He looked like a fun dude to hang out with too. Well, Taz, it's been so much fun having you. Oh my gosh. On this election eve. So excited
Starting point is 01:13:36 to talk about elections. Do you think people should vote? What do you think? I think they should. Alright. You heard it here first, guys. The official stance of the show. You should vote. Maybe. Taz, where can people find you? You can find me at Tazzy Star on all the socials. I like it. Tazzy Star.
Starting point is 01:13:52 Like Mazzy Star. Wow, you got the reference. Yeah, Mazzy Star. Because I'm old. We're old together. And also, I host a podcast called Good Muslim, Bad Muslim with my friend who's been on the show, Zahra Norbach. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:14:04 Do give us a listen. It's a podcast called Good Muslim, Bad Muslim with my friend who's been on the show, Zahra Norbach. Do give us a listen. It's a lot of fun. It's a monthly podcast where we talk about being Muslim and women and politics. Yeah. It's a very dope show. Yes. And is there a tweet you've been enjoying? Have you been following Hasan Minhaj and his new show Patriot Act?
Starting point is 01:14:21 Yes. Yeah. I haven't seen it yet, but I've read it. I've been reading about it. So he has this tweet. Well, he has a story that he was talking about how he proposed at Applebee's,
Starting point is 01:14:31 and he has this tweet that he has of how his billboard is on an Applebee's, and he says, it is what it is, and I think that's kind of funny, but layered.
Starting point is 01:14:42 Miles, where can people find you? You can find me, Twitter and Instagram at Miles, Twitter, and Instagram at Miles of Grey. And I have, there's two reductor tweets that I really like. One, since the election is coming up, it has a photo of a woman doing like
Starting point is 01:14:55 clenched, awkward teeth smile, where I call it the bird shit smile, where it looks like you're trying to smile with bird shit in your mouth. So it's like, mm-hmm. And it says, how to make small talk with your third cousin from Georgia before begging them to vote.
Starting point is 01:15:08 And then another one was, it says, how to undermine yourself by adding LOL to all your texts. And it has a screen cap of someone's text thread, and it says, someone broke into our apartment, LOL. Shit. You can follow me on Twitter at jack underscore o'brien and a tweet i like is a story being told by andrew kaczynski at k file on twitter there's a thread last night about how this republican congressman jeff fortenberry uh well first he he tweets a picture of a jeff
Starting point is 01:15:42 fortenberry for United States Congress sign. And it just has like really silly googly eyes over it. And it changed the name to Jeff Fartenberry. And the sign says strong family, strong community, strong. And then someone put odor over the last one. one. Anyways, Andrew Kaczynski tweeted, Republican Congressman Jeff Fortenberry's office called the bosses of a University of Nebraska-Lincoln associate professor for liking a photo on Facebook of a picture of Fortenberry that was vandalized with googly eyes on the caption, Jeff Fortenberry. So he didn't send this because he thought they did that. He sent it because they liked a picture with this.
Starting point is 01:16:26 And he was like, hey, fire this person. Okay. So, yeah. Come on, guys. Conservatives. Okay, pobrecito. You claim that liberals are sensitive. But anyways, well done by the Jeff Fartenberry.
Starting point is 01:16:39 Yeah, it's so juvenile, too. It's so silly. We're looking at real problems over here. The fact that that's like the thing that has like clearly gotten under his skin is just so funny like meanwhile people are like setting fire to like beto or rorke lawn lawn signs and shit right putting googly eyes and constantly farting berry it's funny have a sense of humor yes and he said to be clear the professor was not involved in the vandalism of the sign the congressman and his chief of staff are trying to get him in trouble for liking the photo on Facebook.
Starting point is 01:17:07 That's it. Well done, Jeff Fartenberry. But does that mean that all of these campaign managers are spending their campaign time just looking at who likes what? That's my question. What the fuck? I don't know. He's just like, oh, okay. That's it.
Starting point is 01:17:21 Or maybe a volunteer who knew the professor. Like, oh, you just, my professor liked this, and then they think they're flexing on the campaign. It's like what's happening in Brazil, right? Like they're attacking the academia in Brazil right now, the fascist regime. So it's just kind of like, well, this is how it starts. Yeah, but all these people,
Starting point is 01:17:41 it's just amazing that the election is is coming up my man like how is this what you're worried about uh you can follow us on twitter at daily zeitgeist we're at the daily zeitgeist on instagram we have a facebook fan page and a website dailyzeitgeist.com where we post our episodes and our footnotes where we link off to the information that we talked about in today's episode as well as the song we ride out on you can also find that information in the show notes show notes uh that's you know the information on the episode wherever you're listening to this uh miles what song are we gonna write out okay well speaking of feeling old as shit i saw edgar montplaisir from culture kings uh in the in the building and i asked him if he had heard the new Swiss Beats album
Starting point is 01:18:26 and he said, damn, you're fucking old. I thought it was going to be more subtle, like him being like, wait, who's Swiss Beats? Yeah, no, he just fucking read me. Like, yo, you're fucking old, bro. You're washed. But I'm very excited about the Swiss Beats album, particularly because
Starting point is 01:18:42 there's a track on there with Kendrick Lamar, Jadakiss, Stylist P of the Locks. You know, chic. We're still playing for you. But this track is called Something Dirty, Pick slash Pick Goddess. And it has, like, just an addictive brass sample that sounds like the beginning of, like, a radio news show. But, again, Mr. Swizz Beatz is showtime. But again, Mr. Swizz Beatz It's showtime
Starting point is 01:19:03 Just basically flipped it and gave us A dose for all us old people Who remember the 90s and early aughts So yeah, this is called Something Dirty by Swizz Beatz Alright, we're gonna ride out on that We will be back tomorrow because it is A daily podcast, we'll talk to you tomorrow
