Starting point is 00:02:06 your podcasts. Hello, the internet, and welcome to this episode of Zeit in the Name of Trend. As courtesy of the Discord, I am Jack. That is Miles, and here's what's
Starting point is 00:02:22 trending, Miles. Every once in a while, the trends overlap with uh our areas of interest and when i pulled up google trends to see what people were googling today arsenal was the number two thing trending um just behind who won the voice uh damn i mean look arsenal football club is in a fucking state of disarray at the moment we have we can't we can't we can't get our shit together we can't win a game we can't keep 11 players on the pitch because people are getting stupid ass red cards and getting sent off when we might be able to carve out some kind of result uh yeah so the internet does this thing like here's the deal arsenal probably makes up for the largest share
Starting point is 00:03:11 of online users of like football supporters uh like a huge huge chunk of it like arsenal fans have been on the internet for a very long time and you know in the in the late 90s and early 2000s arsenal was doing their thing you know we were fucking the invincibles no one could beat us that that arson vanger was changing the way the football was being played and that built-in resentment comes out whenever we're fucking up because people love to dunk on us because you know yankees or the yeah except we yeah except we had a very we have as long of a reign like them but we had a very, we didn't have as long of a reign like them, but we had a very specific time. And, you know, people like to shit on us.
Starting point is 00:03:47 And I get it. It happens with every fandom. But right now the results are, like, comical. Like, they're truly, like, I'm on, like, text res with my homies who support Arsenal, and I'm like, I don't know what's going to happen. I'm putting money that, like, what could be a bigger failure? And I'm like, maybe an own goal own goal to like win the game for another team like a spectacular own goal it's just going but everything else yeah it's going awful and it's
Starting point is 00:04:11 one of those things where i've accepted you know it happens with teams like where for whatever fucking reason on paper you know this team should be doing way better but it's like this intersection of like bad vibes that statistic people are coming like statistically not performing well and it just looks like a total fucking shit show so you guys recently replaced the coach right so is this this is a new regime uh yeah well so right now we have a our manager is this guy mikhail arteta who used to play for the club. And oddly enough, he was not a head coach before this. He was an assistant coach for Manchester City, assisting a very sought-after manager. So we kind of were like, oh, this dude is kind of learning the vibes over there.
Starting point is 00:04:58 He might make a good manager here. Even though people were like, you might want somebody more proven. But we're like, no, he gets the club. We did really well. We was turning shit around when he came on, but now it's just looking bad. Fell apart. Yeah, now the front office is on some trust the process shit, and we're not ready. We're not trusting the fucking thing right now.
Starting point is 00:05:15 So we'll see what happens. But I'm just kind of, I'm in that place where my heart is pretty, I'm good at compartmentalizing. Just, you know, because that's the only way I could do a show like this. While looking like the worst parts of humanity in the eye and trying to laugh about it. So this ain't nothing new to me. I'm inked up with the Arsenal canon. This is nothing new.
Starting point is 00:05:33 I've been down, okay? So, you know, you're up, you're down, you're up, you're down. And all the trends, as I looked and you were pointing out, were like to do with our match today against Southampton. Yeah, there were different players trending. Yeah, theo walcott was trending because he's a former player who celebrated a gold because he used to play for us whatever bro it's what it's yeah when it comes to arsenal yeah to the old sin all as i call it thank you man uh nba stuff is trending uh james harden showed up to last night's,
Starting point is 00:06:05 his first preseason game. He was not joining the Rockets prior. And people screen capped, got a screen cap of him looking retuned, like he had put on 30 pounds since the bubble. It was basically just a bad angle. Right. Once he, like if you look at the clips from the game
Starting point is 00:06:28 he didn't look that big um and he played fine and he seems to still be able to move um people were thinking it was like a sean kemp lockout season type thing uh but not not quite not quite so bad uh he's also apparently sneaky, one of the strongest dudes in the league, like pound for pound. Everyone writes that, where they're like, yeah, he may whatever. Don't ignore what his appearance is,
Starting point is 00:06:55 because he's shifty, and you don't know how this man works physically. No one really does. But he does what he does. That left hand, Wow, wow. Giannis is trending. Giannis Antetokounmpo
Starting point is 00:07:10 reigning MVP two years in a row. Was drafted by Milwaukee at 18 back in the day when he was 6'9". Since then, he has grown to be 7 feet tall
Starting point is 00:07:28 and become the best player in the league, like just dominant. Quite literally the freak. Yeah. A lot of people were not expecting him to re-up because he's in a small market with Milwaukee Bucks. So it's cool to see. I'm happy for the people of Milwaukee.
Starting point is 00:07:51 Yeah. Because he could have gone in pursuit of the chip, like people do. And he stayed there. Yeah. It's nice. It's just such a bygone quality, I feel like, in this day and age when the obsession is more about how many rings you got. And I get it, too. Why the fuck are you playing in the league unless you are trying to win
Starting point is 00:08:11 and be on the best fucking team you can be? I also get that argument, too. But on some level, you also see interviews with players who are like, dude, I'm just so blessed I can play in the league. And I'm in a place where I'm I'm really well liked and loved and respected. And that to me is like a great advantage of being able to play professionally. So, yo, man, you know, different strokes for different folks. That 60 minute story about him where like, first of all, they showed footage of like
Starting point is 00:08:38 the league he was playing in before he came here. And like they had to like share shoes and stuff like they would right he would get check out of the game and have to share shoes with his brother um and yeah like they were hustling they were they were you know selling selling t-shirts and shit outside of uh tourist destinations in greece before so yeah it's it's dope he's like kind of a throwback in terms of like the type of dude he is so uh shout out to him and the city of milwaukee happy for y'all uh blizzard 2020 there is a blizzard coming it is expected to be the biggest snowstorm in two years uh heading for the northeast new york city is uh could be facing up to a foot of snow. When was snowpocalypse? Was that the last one?
Starting point is 00:09:25 Was that two years ago? I don't know. Back in 2010, there was something that was being called snowpocalypse back then when I lived in New York. There's like polar vortex or whatever, snowpocalypse. It's all Greek to me. My wife was driving back from the hospital in the middle of that snowstorm and like she literally had to leave the car in the middle of the street because
Starting point is 00:09:51 it like snowed her in like it was wild i had to i had to go out shovel it out and like just like painstakingly get it over to a chunk of the sidewalk that i had shoveled out yeah snow storms i just want like you know i'm down to just you know adventure travel i just need to know i know i talk about this a lot i know not the pains of the snow as being a dirt boy from the valley who only knows hot concrete and dry fucking heat i need like for all the people like oh you don't want to know you don't yes i do i need to again i want to humble myself in the face of snow because i just there's just something so fascinating about it so if i pass away doing a podcast called in pursuit of snow the miles gray story uh just remember that i died doing
Starting point is 00:10:40 what i love yeah i'm actually seeing that in my uh four-year-old and two-year-old now because they've lived in Southern California their whole life, and so they are obsessed with snow. And, like, anytime it appears in the movie, they're like, is it going to snow on Christmas? Yeah, Dad, is it? But I get it. And it's still exciting.
Starting point is 00:11:02 Like, even when you live there and you know, okay, this is going to be weeks of just sludge and making life more difficult, especially in New York City where you have to walk a bunch. But it's still exciting when a big snowstorm comes through and everything's just silent
Starting point is 00:11:20 and covered in white. It's dope. Because then the snow is coming down, the sound waves can't travel as far. So there's, like, a certain audio, like, aural quality to the snowfall. And these are things, again, I've noticed when I go to the snow, I'm like, shut the fuck up, shut the fuck up. I need to fucking know. God, look, it has, like, its own sound, too.
Starting point is 00:11:41 Yeah. I also might just be getting old because i'm way more interested in weather that i just right yeah exactly weather's actually interesting man as a kid though right like same thing growing up here always asking my like you know mom dad who's where's snow at whatever i remember they took me to some fake ass snow thing like where it was like rock hard ice you could just break your arms like trying to like do a pizza pan down uh and that shit was such a trip for me because i was like yeah this this is it this is it this is the snow i've been seeing and then i actually went somewhere where the snow was and i'm like oh okay this is this is what it is this is what this is jackass four is trending
Starting point is 00:12:19 because uh it's happening and steveO and Johnny Knoxville predictably I would say had to be taken to the hospital because of a treadmill accident that happened two days after shooting began. I don't know man like first of all they are
Starting point is 00:12:40 all full time recovering from a life of just like trauma like putting their body through trauma and also they're old like your body can't do that shit anymore hell no what i mean what the fuck is uh this uh treadmill stunt gone awry did they describe i mean i can already imagine what it's going like they beefed up some fucking treadmill to have like a Lamborghini engine running it. So like if you stepped on it, it would just launch you the fuck off of it or some shit. Yeah, I'm sure that's what it is.
Starting point is 00:13:13 If I'm just, you know, if I'm spitballing with the, you know, the boys. I mean, yeah, dude. Johnny Knoxville is going to be 50 this year. And you're doing this shit to yourself? Yeah, man. Shout out to him. Damn uh damn dying for the art and then uh lastly just in the uncanny in the world of the uncanny there's this article about uh these masks that are going soon going on sale in japan uh that are basically hyper realistic uh recreations of somebody else's face that when the dude wears them it just looks like he's wearing somebody else's
Starting point is 00:13:54 face around um it's like it seems it looks like the video is being actively photoshopped when he puts it on like it's just yeah yeah i mean who else who else but us who but us gonna make these creepy ass masks that you that do nothing except fucking make you look like somebody else uh i mean cool i didn't realize when i was reading the article he does like a lot of stuff for um like theatrical performance and things like that so probably you know he's he's a sought after mask maker yeah but who's i mean you're not gonna fool anyone because the mask the face doesn't like move but you you could fool somebody like briefly yeah but i mean while robbing a bank or something if you were on a commuter train like in japan and you know you saw this i probably wouldn't think twice i'd be like yep because you know how sometimes like you know
Starting point is 00:14:52 we call it a salary man who's somebody who's just so on the grizzy of their nine to five that they are hollow inside so like i could look upon a man with a doll's eyes and i'd be like yeah okay he's going to his insurance company job like i'm not even seeing twice yeah or i might see him in a mask i go yeah i'm gonna fuck got a mask on it's just japan bro like he's just gonna write a mask thing yeah well anyway shout out to y'all uh and your hyper realistic masks I am going to buy in. That is what's trending this afternoon. We hope you guys are doing well out there. Stay safe if you are in the path of the snowstorm. We're back tomorrow with a whole ass episode of the show.
Starting point is 00:15:36 Until then, be kind to each other. Be kind to yourselves. Wear a mask that looks like somebody else's face. Don't do nothing about white supremacy. And we will talk to you all tomorrow. Bye. Bye. I'm Dr. Laurie Santos, host of the Happiness Lab podcast.
