Episode Date: July 17, 2024

In this edition of The 2024 RTrendC, Jack and Miles discuss the Republican National ConventIon (feat. Grindr?), 'The Bear' breaking the Emmy record for a comedy series (which is quite a feat for a pow...erfully unfunny show), Drake having a wet hot (and probably stinky) Canadian summer at The Embassy, the Paris mayor having a similarly stinky swim in the Seine and much more!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

People are talking about women's basketball just because of one single game. Clark and Reese have changed the way we consume women's sports. Listen to the making of a rivalry. Kaitlyn Clark versus Angel Reese on the iHeart on the iheart radio app apple podcast or wherever you
Starting point is 00:01:25 get your podcast presented by elf beauty founding partner of iheart women's sports hello the internet and welcome to this episode of the 2024 r trend c that's that's something right yeah yeah yeah my name is jack. That is Miles. Yes. These are some of the things that are trending on this lovely July 17th, 2024. Happy Wednesday. Happy hump day to you, Miles. Happy hump day to you, too. And to you.
Starting point is 00:01:59 And to you. And with your spirit, sir. Let's see. Let's check in with RNC real quick because it's just i mean there's no not nothing surprising in terms of the messaging there there was at first some talk of a unifying unity message after um you know things were taken to a boiling point by the assassination attempt and did you see did you see uh marjorie taylor green's speech i saw um i saw a summation of it i didn't i couldn't bear to watch moving video of her
Starting point is 00:02:32 talking anymore but yeah she had some interesting things to say she she also just kept doing this thing where she would like smile and go after each sentence it was really it was weird just like a goofy just like nailed reading that sentence yeah and i think she was just trying to go with the niceness uh angle but it doesn't seem like they're not they're not getting nicer um at the at the rnc the republicans no no no no what they do no it's the same i mean it's like the reports of like night two was just like just hardcore cult vibes enough all around shit yeah i mean rudy got nice with it uh with uh he tried to eat shit what had break dance it looked like he was walking and then it looked like he's like oh there's something on this chair like it looks like he bent down to
Starting point is 00:03:24 get something on a chair and then fully just laid out and then couldn't get back up that's so sad when you see something like an adult who like can't kind of get up on their own yeah you know they're like it's kind of like watching my baby when he's like just building his core strength he's like yeah yeah like trying to get up this upright position you're like here's a hand for you. There you go. Watching my kids try to do sit ups is hilarious. Every day makes, makes me laugh and laugh.
Starting point is 00:03:53 Um, how many can use your hands? None. Yeah. Um, there's also the clip, of course, of the guy giving a speech about how we're doomed.
Starting point is 00:04:04 If Trump doesn't win i think he's specifically justice yeah justice says that we're what what's the wording that he uses he said we're gonna we need to go unhinged if he loses yeah things will things in america will become unhinged if donald trump doesn't win the election and then cut wide to, for some reason there is a very, that's his dog. That's just his dog that he,
Starting point is 00:04:33 that I, yeah, he brings around with him. I, it's, it's called baby dog is the name of that. Very cute. Um,
Starting point is 00:04:42 sitting. Yeah. It's his dog, a baby dog sitting up in a leather lounge chair next to him just with a with a big old smile on his face such idiocracy shit when like this guy's basically saying like we need to go full-blown like we need to go sicko mode like travis scott if fucking trump doesn't win and then just a nice reveal of a bulldog panting and now look at this cute dog now watch this drive exactly it's totally like what the fuck are we doing yeah yeah um he also i think he i remember i feel we talked about it one time when
Starting point is 00:05:21 he was showing the dog's asshole to people like at the state legislature i would say miles that seems like the sort of thing i would remember but i have forgotten weirder shit than that um yeah in the course of doing this podcast he was giving his state of the state address and he just like held up the dog like asshole out just to be like and this is where we're headed like very fiery prop intentionally like look at my dog yeah yeah yeah yeah y'all are yeah okay um being kissed this dog's asshole or something yeah so anyway baby dog good for you oh but bulldogs beautiful dogs it's just hard that end of life i was just saying before we got on i had a
Starting point is 00:06:05 friend who had a bulldog like a purebred english bulldog and like you know they're bred so they're functionally have no like proper breathing airways like to get that face just smushed yeah man just towards the end it gets hearing a labored breath from a bulldog is a bit of a gut check as a human you're like oh should we be making things like this to inherently have such a hard time breathing seems somewhat cool yeah but i guess the dog's asshole and it got better uh and then there's also the i think one of the founders of grinder or somebody who works at grinder saying that the Republican National Convention is like the Super Bowl for Grindr and then that's something you
Starting point is 00:06:47 always hear but that this has just been an opportunity for a lot of people to just be like and here is my Grindr app like I'm inside the convention center and the show your shows their phone and it's like melting from just did you see I felt like
Starting point is 00:07:03 that one dude was showing all of his matches, like one person was there were like five dudes named Troy. Yeah, bro. I saw multiple Troys and I was like is that just everyone's name or is that everyone's like moniker, grinder moniker? A lot of Troys with an E.
Starting point is 00:07:20 They were heavily influenced by the Brad Pitt film. It's not projection, folks uh what the conservative movement is doing the other thing though that is also trending at the rnc the new look here the hot new look people are now like rocking little white
Starting point is 00:07:36 ear bandages little white ear to mimic their lord um and be like yeah man we're this is the new thing where put a white piece of paper on your ear and now you are trump um which is doing as much um i guess medical good for trump because while there's like still a lot of speculation like was he hit with a bullet was he hit with a glass fragment like what the fuck is going on well we i mean his own son eric was like yeah like he didn't
Starting point is 00:08:02 need stitches for that which i don't know if he knows kind of gives up the game there because yeah i don't and i don't know if you need a bandage that crazy i've had the top of my ear cut off with like hair clipping scissors before and the haircut gone awry and that was nasty work and i i was able to get by with like a normal bandaid on top of it you didn't have to put your ear in a weird little envelope um no no I didn't it does seem like when I first saw this I thought this was like somebody making fun of him um
Starting point is 00:08:34 the way it like just putting a white post-it note on the side of their ear uh yeah but it just seems like we are at that level where they're like I'm you now yeah no truly i mean once people were wearing diapers i was like oh yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah that makes sense like i knew i knew they were gone but like to the point when they're like and i will wear this diaper they
Starting point is 00:08:57 say you wear diapers i do wear diaper donald and real men wear diapers and real men have posted on ear for a thing. Yeah. It wasn't a gunshot wound. So we, we, it was, it was a scratch, whether it be a scratch created by bullet or not,
Starting point is 00:09:14 because there's also like, there was, you know, somebody showed a like computer recreation of the path of the bullet and like how close we were to, you know, that his head turned at the last second and that's when the three bullets
Starting point is 00:09:29 sailed by his head. Yeah, exactly. I was trying to find... This feels like they have a bunch of information on that, but then nobody was able to really provide it. Yeah, I've seen a lot of diagrams where they're like, head to the side, that's the or like head to the side that's the
Starting point is 00:09:45 trajectory the path head this way that's the path um but like unless this is like coming from like actual like forensic investigation it's just computer graphics um yeah but anyway i'm sure get your new eric trump was like you know and i'm to say this because it makes it seem like my dad is invincible and he only he can get shot in the ear and doesn't even need bandaid. Right. But yeah, I mean, he was seen golfing the next day with no bandage on his ear. But it did just seemed like such a weird look to have the it's just it's all look. He's a fucking showman. You know what I mean? Everything that's from the fist pump,
Starting point is 00:10:27 he knew. Unless he's like, no, put a band-aid on it. He's bigger, like a little kid would. He's like, no, it really hurt. It hurt me bad. He's like, babe, you're okay. You don't need... No, I want the big one. You mean the big band-aid?
Starting point is 00:10:41 Yeah, but no. As Tybalt from Romeo and Juliet puts it, it was but a scratch. Ah, scratch, scratch. There you go. Although his was not a scratch. He got shanked pretty bad. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:10:53 All right. Let's take a quick break and we'll be right back. I'm Jess Casavetto, executive producer of the hit Netflix documentary series, Dancing for the Devil, the 7M TikTok cult. And I'm Clea Gray, former member of 7M Films and Shekinah Church. And we're the host of the new podcast, Forgive Me For I Have Followed. Together, we'll be diving even deeper into the unbelievable stories behind 7M Films and LA-based Shekinah Church, an alleged cult that has impacted members for over two decades. Jessica and I will delve into the hidden truths
Starting point is 00:11:29 between high-control groups and interview dancers, church members, and others whose lives and careers have been impacted, just like mine. Through powerful, in-depth interviews with former members and new, chilling firsthand accounts, the series will illuminate untold and extremely necessary perspectives. Forgive Me For I Have Followed will be more than an exploration. It's a vital revelation
Starting point is 00:11:50 aimed at ensuring these types of abuses never happen again. Listen to Forgive Me For I Have Followed on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, I'm Gianna Pradente. And I'm Jemay Jackson-Gadsden. We're the hosts of Let's Talk Offline, a new podcast from LinkedIn News and iHeart Podcasts. Together, we'll share what it really takes to thrive in the early years of your career without sacrificing your sanity or sleep. Listen to Let's Talk Offline on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. attempts on his life in less than three weeks. President Gerald R. Ford came stunningly close to being the victim of an assassin today.
Starting point is 00:13:28 And these are the only two times we know of that a woman has tried to assassinate a U.S. president. One was the protege of infamous cult leader Charles Manson. I always felt like Lynette was kind of his right-hand woman. The other, a middle-aged housewife working undercover for the FBI in a violent revolutionary underground. Identified by police as Sarah Jean Moore. The story of one strange
Starting point is 00:13:51 and violent summer. This is Rip Current, available now with new episodes every Thursday. Listen on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts and we're back and the Emmy noms are out Shogun is leading the nomination
Starting point is 00:14:17 Shogun with Nogan which this show is a Shogun with Nogan 25 damn i gotta watch that shit apparently um the bear is next with 23 um and a lot of people are
Starting point is 00:14:33 pointing out the bear so with 23 nominations uh the bear surpasses i think 30 rock had the had the record for 22 nominations in a single year for a comedy. And so now The Bear is officially the funniest show of all time. Yep.
Starting point is 00:14:53 Yep. Hey, that makes sense, man. I'm just bent in half laughing as I watch The Bear. You're back on, you're still in season two, right? You've kind of petered out. I'm back to the Christmas episode. Yeah. laughing as i watched the bear you're back on you're still in season two right you've kind of petered out to the christmas episode yeah i've been so much i've just absorbed so much secondary anxiety from people's like familial trauma like with that christmas episode that i'm like do i do i want it was like no it's good it's good you gotta watch you gotta watch you gotta
Starting point is 00:15:21 watch but like man it is good i don't think that's the one that should stop you i will say no no it's episode one of season three was the one that i i'm having a hard time getting myself going again right it's a little weird for me it's more just like it naturally i think my interest just waned. Yeah. Like I loved the first season and then the second season was fine, but it's like, I'm not really a completionist. I'll fuck it. I'll leave your ass mid season. I don't give a fuck.
Starting point is 00:15:52 Yeah. Yeah. I don't need to know how it ends. I love to quit a show. I love to dump a show. We're quitting. We're done. Oh,
Starting point is 00:16:00 so you're a tough guy, huh? But yeah, season three, episode one, I am a tough guy. That is But yeah, season three, episode one. I am a tough guy. That is what I'm saying.
Starting point is 00:16:08 Let me give you a little neck massage. Season three, episode one is like this tone poem where there's not much dialogue and it's just showing him cooking and different ideas coming together. And it just reminded me too much of one of those videos that would play on a like hotel TV where it's like the height of luxury. And then it just like shows a chef like doing his thing to, you know, it was just like, it,
Starting point is 00:16:39 it just felt weird to me. Like, I don't, I don't know. I'm not, I'm not fully given up on it but i'm just like it has definitely um slowed my going when it comes to watching the bear well it's doing great cleaning up with the emmy noms um also look man with japanese people fucking we up in the nominee got maya erskine and anna sawai
Starting point is 00:17:05 uh best actress in a drama series and uh hiroyuki sanada is also nominated in the actor category and idris elba donald glover io debris blazians i'm proud no blazians specifically but you know the components are there the component the, but the components are there. The component parts are present. The components are there. Donald, we're all there. Drake's mansion just flooded. Apparently, our man on the street in Toronto, JM, our writer, can report that there was a major storm in toronto uh on tuesday with huge amounts of rainfall flooding streets knocking out power for thousands of people um and the most famous
Starting point is 00:17:51 casualty of the storm was drake's mansion uh drake posted a video of his home filled with brown water including the caption this better be espresso martini when i saw that i'm like i don't know if you want to be walking around yeah he's walking around barefoot in this brown water shorts that's poop and it could be water man it is sewage it is sewage do we know i mean sure i mean it's not not sewage when yeah brown water i definitely can't say that's just clean water i know that yeah it's river water that's not pure mountain spring water coming out through your fucking floors i wouldn't sip on that i mean at that point when all the water is just flowing everywhere like you're a lot of different water sources are being connected um right and i don't i mean when you when i saw that footage i
Starting point is 00:18:40 was like damn bro your your house is fucked like that is a lot of water just blowing in he's carrying a broom around i know i was like wow just like real famous person energy like uh he's like should i help oh i feel bad you're doing everything is it okay okay i'm gonna go to turks and cacos if that's okay this is like really stressing me out like just like everything i'd imagine i don't know how you like what has to get replaced but man the embassy wow there it is um toronto recently proposed taxing houses and businesses for paved surfaces that couldn't absorb what absorb water um as we as we mentioned recently in los angeles like you know a thing that la is working on to become more drought and rain tolerant um because that's kind of how things work around here is
Starting point is 00:19:34 long periods of drought and then uh big downpours um is making the city more spongy and porous. So this is just trying to incentivize that, of course, the right wing, including Donald Trump Jr., who's an expert on local Toronto politics, calling it a rain tax. Don't go to Toronto because
Starting point is 00:20:00 they're going to tax you when it rains. I'm gonna tax you when it rains um i'm gonna tax you when it rains there it is there you go um it's shirley manson on the case anyways the alternative plan of not doing anything seems to be going great for the millionaires well and there was a video game too someone created a not like us video game there's just a lot of like drake l's happening yeah there's. There's just a lot of Drake L's happening. There's also a clip where They Not Like Us starts playing at one of the
Starting point is 00:20:31 USA basketball games and Steph is like, it's fine, but there are other songs in America. No, we know Steph because you're with them. That's why. know kendrick that he said curry keep the family away cut dudes like i'm golfing with the obio group oh really
Starting point is 00:20:52 yeah i didn't know that um but anyways lebron said that he loves the song so he's he's still with kendrick which has to hurt a little bit yeah well look you idolize lebron maybe idolize you know the fact he was he was at the the pop out but ken and friends you know they weren't there but it's okay it's okay it's okay do what you got to do um and finally we do have an update on uh the upcoming olympics and specifically the open mouth swimming events that are to take place in the Seine open mouth freestyle so you know a lot of people pointing out that the Seine is
Starting point is 00:21:33 a traditionally fairly polluted water source and the mayor was like oh you think it's too polluted to swim in? that's alright I'm gonna swim in it go ahead I'm gonna just oh you really want you really want you really
Starting point is 00:21:50 expect me to swim in it shit um and so she kept putting it off putting it off but she finally swam uh there is a clip with her mouth open in the sand taking a big old like the exact thing I was like that's dude that's got if there are exact thing i was like that's dude that's if there's people
Starting point is 00:22:06 who are testing like there's still unsafe levels of e-coli in it i would have been like i would have been like all right i got it okay i got a scuba mask on i did it motherfuckers see proved you wrong but there's a funny like there's another photo where she i think it's like after the swim where it's clear she's like uh shit like it's kind of gross water like yeah her face is like this is like i'm in the sen river um but hey what it did prove is that she didn't die immediately upon getting in the water so it wasn't like when that person was like look you can huff this uh leaded gasoline and it doesn't hurt you and then like immediately died on the stage um yeah wait is that that's what someone did
Starting point is 00:22:50 i don't know if they died on the stage but they did not make it very well it did not go well for them they're like look you can wash your hands in the leaded gasoline and like did that and then uh immediately had all sorts of problems um but yeah the the follow-up picture of Paris Meyer and Hidalgo,
Starting point is 00:23:10 her brain is saying, fucking smile to her face. And her body is going. You call it the bird shit smile. We used to call it the bird shit smile. You're smiling as if a bird just shit in your mouth. And you got to call it the bird shit smile like you're smiling as if a bird just shit in your mouth and you gotta make it work where it's like what a specific what a specific uh way to smile when you're 15 you come up with new phrases you're like it's the bird shit smile oh wow giving you the bird shit uh this is the parisian shit smile where a parisian just
Starting point is 00:23:44 shit in your mouth and then you got trapped into having to pretend you like it. You've got mailed mouth. Mailed. You've got mailed. You've got mailed. You've got mailed.
Starting point is 00:23:59 Alright. Those are some of the things that are trending on this Wednesday, July 17th. We are back tomorrow with a whole last episode of the show. Until then, be kind to each other. Be kind to yourselves. Get the vaccine. Don't do nothing about white supremacy.
Starting point is 00:24:16 And we will talk to you all then. Bye. Bye. Hey, I'm Gianna Pradenti. And I'm Jermaine Jackson-Gadsden.
