One was the protege of Charles Manson. 26-year-old Lynette Fromm, nickname Squeaky. The other, a middle-aged housewife working undercover for the FBI. Identified by police as Sarah Jean Moore.
Starting point is 00:01:23 The story of one strange and violent summer this season on the new podcast Rip Current. Hi, I'm Akilah Hughes and I'm so excited about my new podcast Rebel Spirit where I head back to my hometown in Kentucky and try to convince my high school to change their racist mascot, the Rebels, into something everyone in the South loves, the biscuits. I was a lady rebel. Like, what does that even mean? It's right here in black and white in print.
Starting point is 00:02:01 It's bigger than a flag or mascot. Listen to Rebel Spirit on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hello, the internet, and welcome to this episode of Do You Remember? The 21st night of September. Oh, it's supposed to be the 21st night of September. I can't do this.
Starting point is 00:02:24 September. Hey,'t. I can't do this. September. Hey, man. September. It happened. It happened. Hey, I'm losing it in my old age. You got to put it in front of me like burgundy or else I'm going to. With like the bouncing dot over it.
Starting point is 00:02:38 Like, ah, yeah, there we go. There it is. Or else I get my cadence wrong. Lost my way. I'm Jack. That's Miles. It is September 21st. Demi, did you eBay day as Vulture has christened it? Because this is the day that five years ago, six years ago, not five years ago, I guess.
Starting point is 00:02:58 2016 Demi, former guest on Daily Zeitgeist, did a video where he just lip synced to a kind of remix that he made of Earth, Wind & Fire September and just released it on September 21st and then had a shirt that said, that is today. It was very, very simple. it was about a minute and a half long and every september 21st since then he has gotten more elaborate with his uh videos and this year uh he's really topped himself with what i think would qualify as like the best music video of the year. Like it's so good. It's awesome. Um, it's, it's got everything.
Starting point is 00:03:47 It's got inception vibes going on or he's defying gravity. There's cameos galore from people you've heard on this show. It's just like a really, yeah, he's, he's just such a gifted creator and he's already raised almost $450,000 as of recording this for the three charities that he's donating the money for. So that's Imagine Waterworks for disaster relief with Hurricane Ida, the West Fund, which is a nonprofit abortion access organization in Texas,
Starting point is 00:04:21 and also, you know, Sun sunrise movement because the climate is changing so just with his brain he's created all of that money uh and yeah there's you know you can also you might be able to win off a raffle for a jersey or a painting he's just yeah great one of the great uh very very funny person very cool video go go watch all of them if you if you haven't seen them uh it's pretty cool to see the the progress as as we uh call it in the biz ben simmons is trending so there's a couple nba names trending ben simmons and jj reddick both former sixers let's first of all let's just start with j.J. Redick, my dad's favorite player, current player in the NBA. Or I guess not current player because he retired.
Starting point is 00:05:13 Oh, boy. Got him. He's a badass loser. How do you like him now, dad? Yo, he's younger than you, bro. Too old to play in the NBA, though. That's one thing. J.J. That's all I thing um that's all i know that's all i know um tell that to lebron in a couple months i think i think it's geriatric jokester jokester rick
Starting point is 00:05:36 i think geriatric spelled with a g but that's all right it's fine like hey man no what a career uh and my dad uh really really likes him and uh hope you know that jj yeah he's a big fan big fan uh compares my kids to your kids in pictures and it's you know wait he really does yeah he's like ah look how tall reddick's kids are Wait, he really does? Yeah, he's like, ah, look how tall Redick's kids are. No, I'm just joking. Oh, man, what do you think he's feeding them? And are you feeding your kids that, Jack?
Starting point is 00:06:14 All right, and Ben Simmons, of course, is trending. People were wondering what was going to happen because he had said he wasn't planning to report for training camp and that he didn't want to play another game for the 76ers. But they didn't trade him. So they were like, we'll call your bluff there, man. What are you going to do? Not play in the NBA? And that appears to be his plan.
Starting point is 00:06:35 He reiterated he will never play another game for the franchise. That's heavy. Yeah. Hasn't spoken to the team since a late august meeting when he communicated his message do you think he's like he's the kind of guy who would be like i don't give like i will actually retire like i really like i don't like basketball enough to play for the 76ers like and if that's the only way i have a little bit of coin and i will just go on my way and sell NFTs. No, he'll find a way to like, you know, I mean, Rich Paul's his agent. Like he's going to find a way to keep playing basketball.
Starting point is 00:07:11 But I think it'll be on his own terms because I do think it's got to be not that fun to play for him these days because he can't shoot. And I think all along it's been kind of a mental thing. days because he can't shoot and i think all along it's been kind of a mental thing and so if you have a big mental block at the center of your game and you're a famous nba player that's not that's gotta suck um so i'm not surprised his uh he's okay with the option of you know not not playing until he can do it on his own terms because i I didn't know how they were going to pull that off. Like, what the fuck was that going to look like? Right. Just them having openly been like,
Starting point is 00:07:50 yeah, man, you really did fuck up. You're right. I don't know why didn't you ask him? Anyways, for non-NBA fans, we'll move past it. But the 76ers are a mess. Joy Reid is trending she's calling out the media for obsessing over missing white women yeah um yeah because uh what's her name gabby patino patito patito yes the that like i mean you got like a wall-to-wall coverage of this even for me i was like i don't this is a lot like considering
Starting point is 00:08:25 the volume of people that go missing in a year and yeah she's just saying she was saying the thing is like they i believe the full quote was they have missing white women syndrome uh because of just like the outsized focus on you know like missing white women when it comes to like women of color that are missing it's maybe a story if it intersects with something bigger but not to the point where it's like this black woman is missing everyone and they're an influencer or this indigenous woman is missing everyone uh because there's a lot of people who are missing um yeah and i think that's a that's a fair assessment whether or not you agree with joy read most of the time but that seems that seems about right
Starting point is 00:09:10 because i'm even a little uh shocked at how much uh like gabby petito is like the news story considering you know all the things that have happened you know i guess we don't want to talk about errant drone strikes anymore that are killing children. So let's just shift the focus to this other thing. Uh, all right, let's take a quick break and we'll be back. I've been thinking about you.
Starting point is 00:09:41 I want you back in my life. It's too late for that. I have a proposal for you. Come up you back in my life. It's too late for that. I have a proposal for you. Come up here and document my project. All you need to do is record everything like you always do. One session. 24 hours. BPM 110.
Starting point is 00:09:58 120. She's terrified. Should we wake her up? Absolutely not. What was that? You didn't figure it out? I think I need to hear you say it. That was live audio of a woman's nightmare. This machine is approved and everything? You're allowed to be doing this?
Starting point is 00:10:16 We passed the review board a year ago. We're not hurting people. There's nothing dangerous about what you're doing. They're just dreams. Dream Sequence is a new horror thriller from Blumhouse Television, iHeartRadio, and Realm. Listen to Dream Sequence on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. I mean, you can still watch us, but you got to listen. Like, if you're watching us, you have to tell us. Like, if you're out the window, you have to say, hey, I'm watching you outside of the window. Just, you know what? Listen to the Amber and Lacey Lacey and Amber
Starting point is 00:11:27 show on Will Ferrell's Big Money Players Network on the iHeartRadio app, Apple podcast or wherever you get your podcasts. How do you feel about this? Hi, I'm Akilah Hughes, and I'm so excited about my new podcast rebel spirit where i head back to my hometown in kentucky and try to convince my high school to change their racist mascot the rebels into something everyone in the south loves the biscuits i was a lady rebel like what does that even mean i mean the boone county rebels will stay the boone county rebels with the image it's right here in black and white in the prints. A lion. An individual that came to the school saying that God sent him to talk to me
Starting point is 00:12:09 about the mascot switch. As a leader, you choose hills that you want to die on. Why would we want to be the losing team? I'd just take all the other stuff out of it. Segregation academies, when the civil rights said that we need to integrate public schools, these charter schools were exempt from that. Bigger than a flag or mascot. You have to be
Starting point is 00:12:29 ready for serious backlash. Listen to Rebel Spirit on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. In 1982, Atari players had one thing on their minds, Sword Quest. This wasn't just a new game. Atari promised 150 grand in prizes to four finalists. But the prizes disappeared. And what started as a video game promotion became one of the most controversial moments
Starting point is 00:12:59 in 80s pop culture. I just don't believe they exist. That would be my reaction, shock and awe. That sword was amazing. It was so beautiful. I just don't believe they exist. I mean, my reaction, shock and awe. That sword was amazing. It was so beautiful. I'm Jamie Loftus. Join me this spring for The Legend of Sword Quest, a podcast about the fall of Atari
Starting point is 00:13:15 and the disappearing Sword Quest prizes. We'll follow the quest for lost treasure across four decades. It's almost like a metaphor for the industry and Atari itself in a way. Listen to The Legend of Sword Quest on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. And we're back. And there is some breaking news in the new york times that trump's campaign new days after the
Starting point is 00:13:47 2020 election the wild claims about voting machine tampering were not true according to court filings uh-oh um so i mean i don't know why i say uh-oh it's like we everybody knew that you're like you know this is so transparently them trying to just fuck or fuck the election up in their favor but i guess they knew they knew that this was just all a bunch of nonsense so what does that mean their followers tbd yeah tbd what will that mean will that mean there's real you know like what what are the consequences obviously like the uh what's her face the kraken lawyer um sydney powell you know she's looking at a bunch of uh you know sanctions and things like that as it relates to her being able to practice law but like what about for like the
Starting point is 00:14:39 you know intentional effort to subvert like legal and electoral systems for this yeah is she one of the people who like it was shown did know and was like actively just bullshitting or what what members of the campaign are like kind of shown that they know i think everybody who was part of that legal effort like they were exchanging all this information so yeah like i'd imagine that's also sydney powell um yeah like when they're saying juliani right i mean he told me that he he told me i mean yeah and he told us all he wasn't drunk the other day so leave him alone yeah okay he knows one two five scotch scotches yeah um so i mean i think if anything that probably gives a little bit more um you know uh momentum and weight for dominion's lawsuit yeah you know because they're like you are fucking around and just lying about what the fuck is going on so i think having this alongside
Starting point is 00:15:40 that would be like so they knew they did it intentionally can i have all of their money yeah oh man i can't imagine this this must be just uh landing like a fucking thunderbolt in a q facebook groups you know i mean i'm curious to know what mike lindell is probably trying to spin this as right but i don't know i don't. These are documents that are filed in court. But what does it even mean? Yeah. And so the many saints of Newark, I believe, is what it's called. The Sopranos prequel is coming out a couple weekends. The reviews are starting to trickle in and they're pretty mixed. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:16:23 Some are great. Some are like, like of see make it seem like it's bad y'all but uh they are not mixed with regards to uh their ability to use uh just really shitty sopranos puns um so we want to take a look at some of these uh headlines uh so from the entertainment weekly review saints can't be what sopranos was without the time or the ones who've been lost to tell it forget about it um i mean nme just when you think you're out the sopranos pulls you back in which is a reference to the godfather but yeah close enough cause yeah both mob things what was the Carmelo one
Starting point is 00:17:08 dude there was one that uh like uh Edie Falco made a cameo in many saints of newark but the scene got whacked because it just was edited out of the film oh you mean it was edited out and I think daily beast was like many
Starting point is 00:17:24 saints of newark it's dry macaroni with no gravy oh shit oh my god them's fighting words you know yeah so they i think if anything that's all this is done for everyone is just uh get get everyone get your mob puns out and idioms for your headlines. Yeah. That's forget about it is like, how are you still writing that in 2021? Like that was, you don't,
Starting point is 00:17:56 you don't need to be doing that. I don't know. I, I'm just the idea that they write that and they're like, forget about it. Yeah. And done. And send my editors are gonna love this yes all right and finally a little relationship tip from benefer they don't follow
Starting point is 00:18:15 each other on social media um what yeah like intentionally or if someone just noticed like they don't just noticed and i mean you, the idea of being social media official has always been a big deal for people. But I feel like you could make the case that social media probably not the best thing for a relationship, especially when you have like six million followers like they do. And also like Ben Affleck's feed is not that of a person who is like actually posting shit right you know like i'm sure for him it's like dude he's like i don't even look at it he's like i'm fucking too rich for instagram i don't i don't do that uh and like all of his posts are like seemingly like being posted by someone who manages an account like just to promote stuff or have like little promo images and things so i don't know if it's necessarily uh i don't know you know
Starting point is 00:19:11 sometimes you're just too rich to even use instagram i think that's also the case yeah but i think there are stories of where he did use it to slide into some dms uh oh right right right or maybe it was he was out on like some dating sites yeah i mean i don't i don't count people like yeah it's really me you want to facetime that's right oh god thanks sir that ben affleck right it's me you're welcome how do i open pdf hey how do i open pdf jack, how do I open PDF, Jack? All right. Those are some of the things that are trending this afternoon.
Starting point is 00:19:51 We're back tomorrow with a whole ass episode of the show. Until then, be kind to each other. Be kind to yourselves. Get the vaccine. Don't do nothing about white supremacy. And we will talk to you all tomorrow. Bye. Bye. Bye.
