Oh, I should have put this thing in, there's this, Manchester City got found guilty of like 114 financial crimes against sporting humanity, like in the Premier League.
Oh, they pulled in-N-N-A-N-A-Legh.
Well, this is, so, so, yeah, it's basically like, it's not just like one Kauai Leonard.
It's like, they're saying, like, for the last, for the 10 years that span the investigation, everyone was a Kauai Leonard on this team.
Like, everyone, like, so many people.
people were getting side money, like the shadiest side money to basically play for this team.
God damn.
Pablo Tour, I really just like yanked it a tiny string and the whole world of sports came unraveled.
This has been on since like the basically state of Abu Dhabi bought Manchester City.
They were like one of the first state-owned clubs in the Premier League.
People have always been like, what these people are spending way too much money.
It doesn't make sense.
So this has been like going for years.
years. Like they announced, they charged them with 115 charges three years ago. And then we only got the like decision.
It was like a flash of week. Yeah. You just got the NBA report. They just finished the paperwork last week. Right. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. And it's like, it's to the point where like they won a lot of titles and they're like, are they going to have to vacate these titles? Are like other teams are going to sue because there's like relegation? Like teams get ousted. Right. If you're in the bottom three like you go to them like the lower division. So.
you lose a ton of money.
So all these clubs are now trying to figure out, like,
what kind of damages are we going to seek if they were guilty of all this?
Because the knock on effects were like,
you were financially doping all of these seasons.
Were they good during that time?
Were they like one of the better teams?
Yes.
And even from like this,
the charges really only go to about like 20-22-ish.
And then like from 2022 to even now,
they just,
they won almost every year.
Like with the best manager,
like with early,
Holland playing on the team.
There's a lot of talk of like,
what the, so especially the teams
that are not Manchester City,
they're all like, give these people
the fucking dagger of death.
Like send them like three
divisions down, make the owners sell
because they are not like good
people. They're not going to make everybody
do the World Cup again. I can't go
through one of those right now.
Run it back.
The last three years of soccer
history. Do they have to run it back?
It's like Connectedee, New York or Scenic Dosh,
whatever that's fucking Charlie Coffin,
synectady, Synecicki, New York,
but for sports where you have to redo everything.
No, the fans, we need to bring all the fans back.
You'll be playing this fan who has actually passed away since then.

Lisa, we should tell them about our new show.
Oh my God, Lexi.
We have a new podcast.
It's called Don't Lie to Me.
I'm Lexi Wano.
We're two best friends, 22 years apart, but so close at heart.
And I'm Lisa Di Giulio, the old one, which means we have wildly different references,
occasionally different opinions, and at this point in my 50s, I've lived it all.
I'm not going to get anywhere fighting.
That is wild.
I learned that about you today.
Now in my 30s, being the founder of new shoes, good taste is my business,
and I've always got something to say.
If men were just honest about this,
There would be so much more peace in the world.
We're going to talk about dating, relationships, beauty, getting older, and a little wiser.
We're best friends, but we don't always agree.
Because you told us how accommodating you are.
Obviously, I would do what I think I could do to fight the fight, but there's only so much fight I can fight.
Don't lie to me.
Don't lie to me. Don't lie to me.
Don't lie to me. Don't lie to me.
Liar.

What I try to do is faux journal.
I don't know.
Have you guys heard of faux journaling?
Yeah.
It's reading.
It's called reading.
So we don't like to use that word anymore.
Okay.
A panel of New Yorker cartoonists.
Have you guys?
done Terry Gross's Peloton class?
No! I've been dying
too! I'm so sorry.
I'm seeing a reading
of Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes by
Audra McDonald's at the Wonderland Bookstore
on 14th. That's crazy. I went to the Wonderland
bookstore yesterday and I heard Nora Jones
do a reading of Zero Dark 30.
No way!
You have to come to the last bookstore though.
Kim Cottrell is reading the guitar tabs
of yesterday.
A panel of Eurovision participants.
And we do a little Halloween sometimes.
Does the Pope dress up?
He winks on Halloween.
It's right up next to the microphone.
I hear you can almost hear the eyelashes hit each other.
You never seen Italy so quiet as when the Pope gets up to wink on Halloween.

By age 11 or so, at least 70% have a phone.
Middle school is a different world than the one we grew up in.
I'm Dr. Joy, and this is therapy for black girls.
We spent real time on it in our surviving middle school run, bringing in a child psychologist and a psychiatrist who's raising two black girls of his own to talk about what's really going on with our kids right now.
So it's literally physiological and neurological and psychological and psychological chaos happening all of the same time.
We got into group chats and gaming, friendships and bullying, and how to tell the difference between healthy monitoring and the kind of surveillance that erodes trust.
There's belonging.
You could think of belonging as, I can be.
myself and I can still be accepted.
And then there's fitting in.
Spitting in says I have to change who I am in order to avoid rejection.
Then we turn the conversation toward the fathers, sitting down with therapist
Keer Gaines on Black fatherhood and what it means to raise a daughter through this stage.
You don't have on shorts, so you can't do flips, you have on the dress, so you have to cross your
legs.
That's the range of this run, from screen time to identity to the fathers doing the work at home.
We have to get off her device.
But the reality is there's a lot of life out there that we don't want.
want you as your adults in their life to miss out on.
This has been our surviving middle school run.
Brought to you by the people who spend their careers thinking about exactly this.
I'm Dr. Joy.

Self Care September is here, which means it's time to rethink what self-care actually means.
Yes, self-care can be a long walk.
It can be in everything shower.
It can be putting your phone on Do Not Disturb.
but sometimes it's actually about sitting with the uncomfortable stuff,
and understanding your patterns, your boundaries,
finally figuring out while you keep doing things that you swore you would never do again.
I'm Gemma Spegg, the host of the Psychology of Your 20s podcast,
and each week we unpack the psychology behind the experiences that shape your 20s,
from relationships and friendships to money, anxiety, confidence, attachment,
just becoming more comfortable with who you are.
Unlike the quarter-life crisis, which is depicted as the collapse,
The quarter life reinvention is the expansion and growth of something.
When we develop the ability to be happy by ourselves, nobody else can take that from you.
So this self-care September, don't just take care of yourself.
Get to know yourself as well.

Hi, guys, I'm Hoda Kotby.
Host of the podcast, Joy 101 with Hoda Kotby.
If you know me, you know, I'm always searching for inspiration and useful tools so that we
can maximize joy. This podcast lets us uncover those things together through meaningful conversations
with fascinating people. Like my longtime friend Seth Myers opened up about how his road to success
included some difficult detours. We would do a Taylor Read on Wednesday, and I would often
go back to my office and be like, you're not as funny as they are. And the most haunting thing about
that is you can't outwork talent. And comedian Hassan Minaj shared where he met his
is now wife.
I was like, was our experience like a frat?
You know, it's like, no.
Because in frats, like, everyone is having sex, but no one is in love.
But on the, like, competitive Bollywood dance team, everyone's in love, but no one's having sex.

Hello, the Internet, and welcome to this week trend edition of their daily night guys.
Mia.
Mia.
Yeah.
Nah, my name is Jack.
That over there is Mr. Miles.
Great.
This is the episode where we tell you what was trending over this weekend.
What is trending currently?
And what's trending in our little hearts.
Our hearts, they say, are three sizes too small.
But maybe through the power of this show, they'll grow a couple sizes.
Let's show the cardiologist.
Let's prove the cardiologist wrong.
We don't know how it's getting blood to all your different parts.
your heart sucks shit it's tiny um anyways how are you doing myel great great wait you're freaking
you're freaking me yeah you never asked me that directly is everything how are you how are you you
you're gonna fucking fire me aren't you dude i've been watching Oprah videos and she's telling me to
check in with myself and check in with others oh yeah yeah you know and just find find find our
power there you go well yes i'm i'm i'm doing terribly can you help me right now
No.
Oh, fuck.
No. Fuck. No. I don't say that.
Don't make you real.
I can help you by telling you to help yourself by imagining the future that you want to inhabit.
Thank you.
Thank you, Oprah.
I will.
All right.
But this is the episode.
Let's let them, let's do it to them.
Let's let them get to know us a little bit better.
What is something you think is underrated miles?
Underrated.
So I've got to say, happy birthday, Jackees, Neal.
turned 40 years young over the weekend.
And I celebrated with him.
He had a wonderful birthday,
which is complete with trivia contests
where me and my group of trivia mates
were feverishly trying to figure out
all kinds of roller coaster rides
and movie scenes and things like that.
But one thing I got to say,
Jacques,
he knows that people love a game.
Black people love card games.
Okay?
We love spades.
We like Uno.
We like Kings on the corner.
Playing cards is like a very familiar.
thing. At the party, I was introduced to a new game called Flip 7. Have you heard of this game?
I've not heard of Flip 7. It's the sickest fucking card game I've ever played. And I'm going to tell you why.
Okay. Normally, like, I love playing cards, but every time someone's like, oh, there's like this new card game.
I'm like, dude, I don't have fucking time to like learn all the fucking rules. And someone put it very easy, like, simply that's like, just play around.
You'll very quickly understand what's going on and then you will adapt. So basically the, the game,
game simple. You put out cards. They're numbered one through 12. And for each number that card is,
that's how many are in the deck. So there's 12, 12 cards, 11, 11 cards, 11 cards, 1, 1 card and so
forth. And as you, so you get, you flip a card over. And the thing is, if you, you can either
hit, because you want to keep adding points, or you, you like freeze your hand. And if you hit,
you can keep adding. But if you get two of the same card, you're out. But the exhilaration of this
game is like you're hitting in blackjack because if you can hit if you can hit seven times and
you have seven different cards that's like a flip seven and that's like that's that's a really
great way to like cash out your hand and it like counts for a lot of points so like you find
yourself looking around and like seeing what the other scores are you're doing card counting
yeah and you might like i might have to flip seven to like kind of pull away but the thrill i
everyone was getting from with no money on the on the table just from
purely like, I don't know, man, you got
a 12 and a 10, you might,
another one might come up, and
you just let go and you let God.
And I lost terribly,
but I had so much
fucking fun that I
bought the fucking game the next day.
Because like, when Her Majesty's
back from her work trip, I'm like,
we need to get people over and we're playing some
fucking flip seven, because this shit was
so fucking fun. That's like,
yeah, I got to say it. It's not a normal deck of
cart. Sounds like it's its own deck of
It's its own proprietary deck.
A proprietary card game.
Yeah.
And yeah, the way it was introduced, like, do you play Blackjack?
I'm like, yes.
So like, do you like Blackjack?
I'm like, yes.
And like, then you're going to like this game.
Wow.
A more complex.
More mathematically complex.
Because you still get the thing of like, what's going to flip over and do I win?
And that specific feeling, I'm like, oh, I really underrated how much I chase the feeling
of like, do I take a risk here and flip the card or not with no, with no gambling?
So yeah, not an ad, but I had such a great time playing this out of 40th birthday party.
But I have to just tell everybody.
I have to scream it from the mountaintop.
This is my life, by the way, now is being pitched proprietary card game because my son is into Magic the Gathering.
Oh, yeah.
He went to sleepaway camp for one week and came back and was like, this is all I care about now.
Yeah, that's how it works.
And it is hard.
for me to wrap my head.
Like, we've played a couple games, and he always just, like,
beats my ass and, like, reveals some
rule.
Right, right, right.
He's beating my ass that I didn't know about prior.
Right. But, yeah, this is, I'm just being pitched
proprietary card games at all times.
I mean, that's, magic requires a lot of knowledge,
you know, for the different.
Reading, Lord. Yeah. You're like, manna? What?
A manna card?
Ah, man. This is,
so easy. Like this is
this is just straight up
fun but yeah. I get it.
I gotta see if I find my old
magic cards. I think I have them at my
moms. I'll send them your way.
Oh, for real? I've got it. Dude, I had
so many, like I was
again also a 11 year
old who went to summer camp
and was around nerdy kids who had
Magic the Gathering cards and I came back like
completely ruined. Like I was like,
my, like, Magic the Gathering now.
That's all I do. He's just
like seeking games.
He's just like going around and being like, hey, you play magic.
Like he's, he's feet.
Oh, hell yeah.
He just went, he went to a card shop yesterday.
There was a room full of probably 30 men in their 30s and 40s playing magic.
And he just like watched until a game ended and was like, hey, let me get, let me get next.
And like sat there and played with a, nobody.
Where'd you go?
Under the age of 30.
I'm not going to say the name of the game.
But like one of the, like, like a game.
like one of those game tabletop game kind of cafe.
Yeah, yeah.
Yeah, yeah.
Shop, a shop in the L.A. area.
That's what's always genius.
Like, they're also a shop too.
So it's like, yeah, come on and play.
They're like, can't help buy it.
You got your ass kicked, right?
You want to maybe buy some carts, maybe?
They were actually really nice.
They, I think they just find it, like, kind of adorable that he's there.
So, like, the shop owner gave him a mat and, like, some dice because he doesn't have dice.
He didn't have, like, the dice that are necessary.
So shout out to them
I wish I could shout them out
But he's probably gonna keep going there
And I don't know
Yeah yeah
Feels weird
Anyways
I missed the
The Jakeese party
Because I took a day trip
On the train
And that was my underrated
Taking the train
Mm-hmm
The vibes are so much better
When you're not having to drive
Especially like the drive
Between Los Angeles and San Diego
Where
We went to see an air
show.
Oh yeah, you got to see the Blue Angels?
The Blue Angels.
Wow.
By the way, I would put
Blue Angels, like the air
shows in the category with
fireworks as a thing
that is cool to have
happening in the background, but like
not to just be sitting in a
open space looking at and do
like we left early during the Blue
Angels because they, like, we barely
made the train on the way back. It was just like getting out of this place was was a hell.
But we kind of timed it just right. So we got there just in time. And like as we're walking
back to where we were going to catch the Uber to go to the train station, like the Blue Angels are
just like happening overhead, you know? Right, right, right. Oh yeah. And they're like, whoa.
Yeah, that feels cool as hell. Like when you're just like around. Yeah. And they just like fly by as you're
like walking down a street.
Right.
Then having like a beach chair.
You're like baking in the sun.
Yeah.
Like when the blue angels come in.
The sun was wild.
It was like people,
there were,
uh,
you know,
any shadow that was on this field.
Like it,
there's a big Alaskan Airlines jet because Alaska
Airlines was sponsoring the air show.
Um,
and like its tail made like a,
you know,
peninsula of shadow.
And there were just people high,
gathering in the shadow, like just sitting in the little shadow peninsula.
But anyways, taking the train, you get there at the time the train is arriving and it's,
and you just get on the train.
There's not like security that you have to go through.
You get up and like go to the bathroom whenever you want.
You can just get up just because.
And it cuts through like weird parts of the country that you're not used to seeing.
Nobody's like building the world for train traveling.
Like nobody's putting signs for train travel.
So you're just seeing the back of shit.
You're seeing like backyards of houses, the backs of factories,
parts of industrial Los Angeles I'd never seen.
So I don't know.
I love it.
And I just think driving is like having a two hour drive hanging over your head like on the highway.
Yeah.
Especially you know, gas is 3,000.
dollars a gallon.
Yeah,
yeah, yeah,
you better take to fucking drain
for going that long.
Yeah.
So that's one of my underrated,
my other is just the,
the celebrities as deity thing.
I played,
like,
a pickup tennis.
Like,
there's this thing called live ball
where people play tennis.
Like,
and,
you know,
it's a way to,
like,
mix a big group.
And I went,
I went to one on late Friday night.
And I didn't realize it was
Dolly Parton themed.
Oh,
925, right?
Yeah.
Yeah.
I got to say,
people were like dressed as dolly but they were also like being like look at that sunset dolly smiling down
you know like it was like real religious shit like it was like damn man like i don't people aren't
like i'm sure they're saying it with a grain of salt but it's also like a little irony sure yeah
but i don't think like it's not it was not a dolly parton themed like group of people like it's
yeah yeah yeah yeah just like people kind of who did you guys i didn't
know it was a Dolly Parton thing.
So you did reverse Babadook?
Yeah, I was the guy in the corner of the Babadook picture,
just enjoying a glass of wine, you know?
I was just there in my...
I was her husband, who nobody ever...
Yeah, you were helping.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Just chilling, invisibly in the background.
What is something you think is overrated,
is not telling someone they got shit in their teeth
or a booger in their nose,
because you don't want to embarrass them.
Okay?
Tell people that shit
because again,
I was at Jackie's party.
I had like a crusty
fucking nose thing.
I was at this party
damn near two hours
before someone who I just met
was kind enough.
She said,
hey,
you got something in your nose right here.
Knows?
Oh, buddy.
And I was like,
shit.
And I was like,
I was talking to fucking
everybody.
I was talking about it.
She's like,
yeah,
everyone's talking about it.
about it. They nominated me to come talk to you.
Yeah, yeah. Yeah. We don't know each other that one. Because, you know, it's running into a bunch of
people like we know and shit like that and like, you know, Alyssa Lynn Paris was there and Ellery
Smith was there. I just saw Hillary Smith. Yeah, yeah. I just told her I was like, wait, well, you haven't
been back. We got to have you back. Yeah. But anyways, I was talking to then this stranger who
I just met was kind enough to just like, very slowly not trying to be like, yo, you got some
shit. And I just like, hey, you know, just you got a little something right here. And I go,
oh my God, thank you so much.
Yeah.
And I was like, I had such sincere gratitude to this woman.
I said, you didn't have to do this, and you did.
Every day, small acts of heroics.
Yes.
I was talking to people I know and they didn't say anything.
So thank you very much.
And she's like, well, I would obviously, like, I wouldn't want someone to tell me.
And I was like, right?
But then I flashed back to moments or I'm like, damn, do I tell this person they got a
fucking, they got a head of lettuce on their, like, incisor tooth.
and then I'm like, I don't know, man.
Yeah.
But I think it's worth it.
Just like if you do it started.
I mean, you're out there without her meds.
Like, that is kind of what partners are often for.
It's to be like, hey.
Hey.
Right.
Publicly calling your shit out.
Right.
I know she was traveling.
So, yeah.
Yep.
Damn.
I wish I could have been there for you, man.
I fucked up.
It's all right, man.
It's all right.
I'm just.
I was riding the rail.
Doing a lot.
Doing a lot alone, man.
Yeah.
I, by the way, I ran into Ellery, which I don't think, she would mind saying running a food bank, which I was like, yeah, yeah, yeah, she wanted to.
Yeah, yeah.
And I was with my son, and I was like, oh, this is, you know, Ellery, she's a comedian.
She's been on my show.
And my son was like, my dad has a podcast.
For some reason, he just started, like, repeating that I have a podcast.
I was like, yeah, no, she knows.
And then it made it seem like, like, I.
I'm like real into the fact that I have a podcast about it.
The way he was like brag about it.
He just kept being like,
he has a podcast.
So I don't know.
It was a weird moment.
But she was like, yeah, no, it's very, very impressive.
Thank you.
Yeah.
My dad is a podcast.
God, damn.
That's like some, if I,
if another kid told me their dad had a podcast,
I'd be like, shit.
It's like this shitty 2020.
version of being like, my dad's a cop.
I feel like, my dad's in a band, like in the night, you know.
But that's cool.
Yeah, I guess being in a band is cool.
I guess I don't know.
Is it cool?
Like, if your kid is talking about it, doesn't it make it seem like you're too into being
in the band maybe?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
It's weird.
It is just a weird look to have your kids bragging that you have a podcast for some reason.
But, hey.
Hey, it gets you talking about it, though, Jack.
It gets you talking about it at least.
That's right.
Crazy with this.
You're my kid just said this crazy stuff.
He said,
I have a podcast.
It's called Buzz Marketing, people.
That's how it's done.
Get the eight-year-olds talking about it.
Hi, welcome to Denny's.
Have you guys figured out
decided what you're on?
Oh, man.
I'm going to have moons over my hammy.
But my kids said something really interesting right now.
What were you saying?
That I have a podcast.
That's, oh, yeah, I guess I do.
That's so weird.
Is that just the moons over my hammy?
Uh, yeah.
Actually, not just a coffee.
Actually not.
You know, actually, but you heard out of a podcast?
Yes.
Actually, I think we're going to go.
We're fine.
I'll just pay for this coffee.
All right.
What is,
oh yeah,
you're under-
what is something you,
Jack, think is overrated?
What is something I think is overrated?
Oh my God,
thank you so much for asking.
The military,
the military's playlists.
So we went to this air show
because my son is into planes,
and it was a military air show.
Like,
you were on a military base to see this air show.
Right.
And they had like music playing along to the plane.
And, uh, it was the same shit.
Like, I, I heard the song, Fortunate Sun 32 times.
Like, are you serious?
They play, they have like eight songs that they just played over and oh, welcome to the jungle, like 30 times.
And like, I'm not sure if like each pilot like gets to choose.
their music, like a baseball player, like, choosing walkout music or something, but like, uh,
and that like, like, as we were walking around, I saw a military band and they, like, looked like
they had some familiarity with music. Like, they had a drummer who was, you know, had some
honey in his hips and, like, like, put those guys in charge of picking some fucking music,
not just whoever the fuck was in charge of this was just the same shit. Oh, and it's like
the songs from the movie. Apocalypse now, basically.
was right of the Valkyries there too?
No.
Bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, like, anything in apocalypse now?
Yeah.
Any stuff from the Vietnam scenes from Forrest Gump?
Yes.
That's the only music.
And then 80s metal music.
Right, right, right.
There's that Timothy McVeigh anecdote that he, when he was like a squat,
the guy blew up the Oklahoma City building.
Federal building, yeah.
Federal building was a,
soldier in the Operation Desert Shield
and was
known for playing the song
A Bad Company over and over like
30 times. Like it was trying to
drive someone out but it was like just
that's how he interacted with the music.
It's always a good sign when someone's just got that tape they've worn
out to absolute hell. A single even. Just
that one song. For my for my family.
family. I will say, didn't see a lot of Trump shit. Didn't see any Trump shit. And this was
the audience. I was waiting in a long line for a water ice. Oh, they had water ice there?
Oh, they had water ice. It was Kona ice. So it was not like. Oh, it's shaved ice then.
Yeah, shaved ice. That's different. But anyways, guy in front of me is, uh, was like going up to
people with a clipboard and being like,
hey, I'm part of Charlie Kirk's organization
and like getting people's email and phone number,
but then like slow playing that he had a real estate business
that he was like trying to get them.
He was like,
and so yeah,
you know,
we're doing a lot of good,
like very vague on his level of connection to the Charlie Kirk thing,
but then,
you know,
very specific about the amazing rates that he has on his real estate business.
What the fuck?
he was basically like hey
I'm a turning point
you know we're collecting him for me
and the people who he got to sign up by the way
were like also kind of quiet
they were like yeah well I'm like kind of looking over their
shoulder like performatively
yeah yeah yeah so they know they're like racist
I guess it's not like they're you know
they know the brand is it couldn't it's it's
weaker and weaker every day it's becoming
less and less of a thing you want to say out loud
yeah but then uh you know
just faithfully
I guess in keeping with the brand,
the guy,
it slowly turned into a real estate pitch,
a real estate grift.
Yeah,
my niece is actually looking for a starter home in the area.
Do you think you could help?
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
And I guarantee all my homes were previously conservatively owned.
They're no liberal owners.
You know, I would never do that to my clients, okay.
Got some emails, got some numbers,
and then bought them their shaved ice, you know.
So he was really just gathering a, like,
a client list for his business.
business.
Oh,
yeah.
Which is so,
so,
like I'm really interested
in this guy's thinking.
And he's like,
this is what I do.
I go up to my tongue
with fucking turning point.
Then I just get their
information for my real estate business.
I'm going to this other thing
next time and I'm going to lie about
being an indigenous American person.
And it's kind of what I do.
You know what I mean?
Just try and find affinity groups
and say I'm one of them.
Get emails,
then cold called the next week.
And they all say no.
Anyways,
vary up the playlist.
guys. Give the military band
a crack at the playlist.
Yeah. I think Fogarty is
he's got enough money, I think, at this point.
Yeah. All right.
Let's take a quick break.
We'll come back. We'll talk about what is
trending. What was trending over
the weekend? We'll be right back.

So it's literally physiological and neurological and psychological and psychological chaos happening all this end up.
We got into group chats and gaming, friendships and bullying, and how to tell the difference between healthy monitoring and the kind of surveillance that erodes trust.
There's belonging. You could think of belonging as I can be myself.
and I can still be accepted, and then there's fitting in.
Spitting in says I have to change who I am in order to avoid rejection.
Then we turn the conversation toward the fathers,
sitting down with therapist Keer Gaines on Black fatherhood
and what it means to raise a daughter through this stage.
You don't have more shorts, so you can't do flips,
you have on the dress, so you have to cross your legs.
That's the range of this run,
from screen time to identity to the fathers doing the work at home.
We have to get off her device, but the reality is there's a lot of life out there
that we don't want you as your adults in their lives to miss out on.
This has been our surviving middle school run.
Brought to you by the people who spend their careers thinking about exactly this.
I'm Dr. Joy.

Self-care September is here, which means it's time to rethink what self-care actually means.
I'm Gemma Spag, the host of the Psychology of Your 20s podcast,
and each week we unpack the psychology behind the experiences that shape your 20s,
from relationships and friendships to money, anxiety, confidence, attachment,
just becoming more comfortable with who you are.

Hi guys, I'm Hoda Kotby.
We would do a Taylor Read on Wednesday, and I would often go back
to my office and be like, you're not as funny as they are. And the most haunting thing about that
is you can't outwork talent. And comedian Hassan Minaj shared where he met his
is now wife.
I was like,
was our experience like a frat?
It's like,
no, because in frats,
like everyone is having sex
but no one is in love.
But on the like competitive
Bollywood dance team,
everyone's in love
but no one's having sex.
Listen to Joy 101 with Hoda Kotby

And we're back.
We're back.
And the weather is fucked up.
Yeah.
What's going on with this weather, man?
The El Nino, man, it's happening.
And I think the one thing I was like always reading is like,
the El Nino isn't necessarily a thing that's a product of climate change.
Like this is like a phenomenon that happens.
But a lot of the climatologists like exacerbated by.
Yeah, they're like the other stuff though.
Like it gets a little dice dice because of like rising water temperatures and like the heat that's being stored there.
Anyway.
So in California, we were fretting over hurricanes.
And on the East Coast, it was a noreaster, which also sounds like a slogan.
of an Aussie atheist person, Norista.
But there was like flooding.
They will be Norista in this house.
There was flooding like all over New York, New Jersey, you know,
the sandy vibes up and down.
New England got some heavy rain.
A Naita worker was tragically killed by a tree that fell on them.
People were evacuated in some places.
Power was out for over 100,000 people.
Flights were delayed.
And the coastal area saw swelling.
tides on our side of the country.
We also dealt with, you know, a hurricane off the coast of Mexico that was just pumping
water into the coastline, like places like Malibu are literally washing away in real
time, like, because the erosion is so intense.
Yeah.
And, you know, just there's like, I'm sure you've maybe seen news footage of it, but like there
are houses that are just like actively like just eroding down to their pylons, getting
closer and closer getting just sucked off into the sea.
And it's just like terrifying to like just see, read about.
Because like, you know, on one hand, you have like these Malibu residents or people
with these beach houses.
They're like, $8 million.
They're like, yeah.
What am I supposed to do?
And everyone else is like, get fucked, man.
You haven't got an $8 million beach house.
But also on the other side of me as someone who lost their home, like, yeah, that sucks.
Like if even regardless of how much you've made, if that's really your house that you live
in full time or whatever, that's probably terrifying to see.
it washed away, but the conversations around all of this happening are very, very interesting.
But like, I've had a lot of dread about this al-Dino.
There's something about all the forecasts where climatologists, whether people are like,
uh, it could be something we potentially have not seen in 1,000 years.
So it's like, oh, okay, we all remember that, uh, the last time that happened.
Right.
What the fuck is that even?
Um, and, you know, just like reading about the dire climate.
situation, you know, just really kind of, I've been like mourning this version of the earth like
I grew up on. Yeah. And how different that's going to be for my own kid. You know what I mean?
Like, just like, there's just certain things. Like I, that's why I always, I always ask people
about like lightning bugs because or fireflies and stuff. Because people like have said anecdotally,
like they're like it, they're, they just aren't. I don't seem as much as like when I was a kid
and all these other things like just little streams and things drying up.
You have all these physical reminders that this is a living thing that maybe we can.
I mean, like obviously there's still things that we can do.
But I feel this feels potentially like if it's really bad and California could have like a just a atmospheric river parked over it for like months.
Yeah.
Potentially.
Feels like a moment where like Americans, because unfortunately like we have to get absolutely booted in the face before we're like, oh.
Yeah.
We got to do something about this.
where we will potentially have to face like the undeniable truth that this place is changing in a way that is existential.
Yeah.
This is the generation that gets to live through once in a millennia, uh, weather events every couple years.
You know, yeah.
This is like, so it's been theoretical to this point.
And now it's like, yeah, no, you, oh, you have kids.
You have kids growing up with it.
This is, this is what they're living through.
Right.
And, uh, yeah, Ocean City, New Jersey, where, you know, I go.
every summer where my parents live,
um,
was seeing flooding,
like the worst flooding in 16 years,
the worst flooding since,
uh,
sandy.
Um,
and it,
it was unpopular at the,
uh,
tennis thing that I was,
the dolly part in tennis thing when I,
bringing up climate change.
We,
we also have to then give Dolly credit for the fucked up weather that we're
seeing.
People are like,
what?
I mean,
I mean,
I'm just trying to,
I'm trying to live inside your,
universe. You just said that the sunset is hers. I just wanted to say she's bursting through
the atmosphere. No, that's God who's doing that. Dolly does the good stuff. Jesus does the bad stuff.
That's right. Clear as day. Okay. Okay. I got it. Clear.
But yeah, it's it's fucked up. It really does feel like the coming year, year and a half is
going to be, it seems like everybody who is kind of scientifically up on this is like, this is going
to be the find out phase of the fuck random find out for us. Yeah. I think that's what makes it really
scary. Because like, I mean, I think, you know, for us, like as millennials, like, we grew up hearing
about climate change too. Not like in the same scary way. Like when we were really younger,
it was just sort of like, and we got it, we have to protect our planet. You know, like, that's kind of
how we had it.
Whereas now, like, you know, I, like,
kids who are, you know, 10, 12, like,
they fully are like, they're like,
what's going to happen to the planet?
Yeah.
And I'm like, Jesus Christ, man.
What a level of existential dread.
We don't know.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So anyway, it's, yeah.
Make sure, hey, if you check your rain gutters,
at the very least in L.A., things like that.
And, I mean, like, just the, I guess that's the thing
that really terrifies me because it's not just like the weather here.
Like, it's the food shocks, the crop failures, the severe droughts and other places that are going to, you know, potentially like upend a lot of stuff if things are, you know, truly play out in its worst possible way.
Yeah.
So I'm just going to pray to Dolly Parton.
Thank you.
Her watchful hand just protects the earth.
This slightly related, Ed Shearan had to cancel his shows at the Robert Kraft owned Gillette Stadium.
the thing that started this whole
this whole craziness
Robert Kraft stepping in and being like
you can't have McElmore on your show
saying that stuff
about what Israel's doing
about humanity
descriptive and
yeah he cancelled it
but it was because of the weather
it was because of the norrisse
man ah coward
he could have what if he did and he was like yeah you know i had to cancel it because
you know i'm starting to see some things right
to buy himself a quick bump of goodwill and then very quickly they're like no it's the norreista
nor east night um that's what it's like people tm z was trying to cover it as if
exclusive ed sheer and show at robert craft jillette stadium are cancelled
not a picture of him with canceled over it um but
Anyways, hope it was worth it, buddy.
Good work on that.
I mean, yeah, Brian is asking, is like, is that, because are the ticket sales declining?
Maybe doing it that way.
I mean, I'd imagine when there's a nor'eastern people, like, I'm not about to go into an open-air stadium for to get pissed on to hear B-grade music.
Yeah.
Although New Englanders not typically scared of the weather, as they love to tell you.
From what I've seen, the people that show up at Gillette Stadium for a Patriots game, I'm like,
Jesus Christ.
Hey, do what you got to do.
This season, they're getting pissed on by the Patriots.
Mm-hmm.
Those guys, not playing well.
All right, some pop culture news.
Mm-hmm.
The Star Wars Skywalker saga has returned.
Even though they literally sold a box set
containing the phrase of the complete saga,
they're like,
psych, we're going to do another trilogy.
we're going to tack on another trilogy at the end.
The Skywalker's
of Trilogy is our entire nine
movie. The episodic
nine movie is episode one through nine
is considered the Skywalker saga. There's been all the
little like spinoffs and stuff like that.
Sure, sure, sure. So now, oh, God.
So people are assuming it's going to be Ray.
They really
fucked up the ninth one in a major way.
So it's and also they just
This is coming like right on the heels of the Mandalorian and Grogu
Shitting the bed like being not well received by critics or audiences and not doing very well at the box office
So being like and now a whole new trilogy
It's from director John Watts who made the first three Tom Holland Spider-Man movies
Which you know
those were very successful.
He also made a skeleton crew,
the Star Wars streaming series,
there's a lot of people seem to like.
So,
you know,
it's definitely he,
he seems to have good pedigree
for this sort of thing.
Although the most successful
of all those Spider-Man movies
just came out and he didn't direct it.
The thing that really popped for me
as maybe a
It's called a reddish flag
is that all three movies are going to be
written by Simon Kinberg
who wrote
some of the recent
X-Men movies
his claim to fame, I guess is
X-Men Days of Future past. He did the
Sherlock Holmes movies.
The Guy Richie ones?
The guy Richie directed those
right with Robert Dan Jr.?
Yeah, which they were successful, but I don't feel like
they're movies that last.
Yeah, they kind of suck.
Um, Jesus.
So he wrote Days of Future Past in 2014, uh, which definitely like an interesting take on an existing
franchise.
Uh, since 2015, he's written Josh Trank's Fantastic Four, X-Men Apocalypse, Dark Phoenix,
which he directed, uh, those were both like kind of considered bad.
Uh, then the 355, which is like a movie that I remember seeing a trailer for.
then it just like doesn't exist.
Um, so not, not a crazy hot streak that makes me understand Disney being like,
we got to get involved with, got to get involved with that.
Um,
oh shit, man, it's, they are, they are really fucking this whole thing up, man.
It's, it's, uh, if they were smart, they would know that there's tremendous fatigue already
for this franchise, even from people who like grew up on it.
me like where I'm like I can only maybe I only have like the wherewithal like every 18 months to
like really sit down with something Star Warsy at this point because it's too much and like if
just fucking develop this shit in secret you're probably going to get a better reaction if you go
on they're like they're actually like they just finished a script on this new thing years from now
so there's space in between if I'm always being fed the constant drip like there's another one
coming there's another one coming there's another one nothing's like special yeah
And that's also, yeah, that's kind of how they've been operating is like, it almost feels like the people at Star Wars are trying to justify their jobs.
Like they're like somebody who's like doing busy work to because their manager is like over their shoulder.
Like they've they've also announced trilogies that were going to be directed by Ryan Johnson and then another one by the Game of Thrones guys and those have all been canceled.
So it almost feels like they're just like, yeah, yeah.
we got this other big thing, you know, they
feel like it's their job to make
announcements. Right. And I think
that's the problem is they didn't just
let this be a story. It became
an entire fucking company
essentially that has to constantly
generate stuff. Rather than being like,
yeah, it's a movie that comes out like and when, you know,
it's like when DeAngelo feels like making another
album, you'll have another album. Right.
Okay. That's right. But this shit, like
doing it constantly over and over again,
it just completely dilutes the, what makes
It's special.
Surprise dropped to Star Wars.
That would be fucking cool.
That would be wild, but I guess that's the thing is, too.
Like, when you hear that, like, the leadership is like, yeah, this guy who's had, like,
a bunch of kind of swing and a misses script-wise should be taking over this.
Then already, like, your appetite just kind of goes, please.
Yeah, I think you really need some, like, you would need a really next-level director,
like, a director where people are interested already.
Yeah, like what that, yeah, exactly.
Like, what happens if, like, Guillermo del Toro has a Star Wars movie?
Oh, okay.
Well, I would watch a Guillermo del Toro movie.
And I think that's what's, yeah, because then from there, I'm like, a Guillermo
del Toro directed Star Wars movie, like, but also how much license does he have as a director?
I think that's the other part, too.
Like, there are rules to making Star Wars.
Rules to the shit.
Yeah.
All right.
I wrote me in episode 10.
Or we won't.
Let's take a quick break.
We'll be right back.
We got the big one coming, guys.

Middle School is a different world than the one we grew up in.
I'm Dr. Joy, and this is Therapy for Black Girls.
We spend real time on it in our surviving middle school run, bringing in a child psychologist
and a psychiatrist who's raising two Black girls of his own to talk about what's really going on with our kids right now.
So it's literally physiological and neurological and psychological and psychological chaos happening all this time.
We got into group chats and gaming, friendships and bullying,
and how to tell the difference between healthy monitoring and the kind of surveillance that erodes trust.
There's belonging. You could think of belonging as I can be myself and I can still be accepted.
And then there's fitting in. Spitting in says I have to change who I am in order to avoid rejection.
Then we turn the conversation toward the fathers, sitting down with,
with therapists care gains on Black fatherhood
and what it means to raise a daughter through this stage.
You don't have on shorts, so you can't do flips.
You have on the dressy up across your legs.
That's the range of this run,
from screen time to identity
to the father's doing the work at home.
We have to get off her device.
But the reality is there's a lot of life out there
that we don't want you as your adults in their lives to miss out on.
This has been our surviving middle school run.
Brought to you by the people who spend their careers
thinking about exactly this.
I'm Dr. Joy.

Self Care September is here, which means it's time to rethink what self-care actually means.
Yes, self-care can be a long walk.
It can be in everything shower.
It can be putting your phone on Do Not Disturb.
But sometimes it's actually about sitting with the uncomfortable stuff.
And understanding your patterns, your boundaries, finally figuring out why you keep doing things that you swore you would never do again.
I'm Gemma Spag, the host of the psychology of your 20s podcast.
and each week we unpack the psychology behind the experiences that shape your 20s,
from relationships and friendships to money, anxiety, confidence, attachment, just becoming
more comfortable with who you are.
Unlike the quarter life crisis, which is depicted as the collapse, the quarter life
reinvention is the expansion and growth of something.
When we develop the ability to be happy by ourselves, nobody else can take that from you.
So this self-care September, don't just take care of yourself, get to know yourself as well.

Hi, guys, I'm Hoda Kotby, host of the podcast, Joy 101 with Hoda Kotby.
If you know me, you know, I'm always searching for inspiration and useful tools so that we can maximize joy.
This podcast lets us uncover those things together through meaningful conversations with fascinating people.
Like my longtime friend Seth Myers opened up about how his road to success,
included some difficult detours.
We would do a table read on Wednesday,
and I would often go back to my office
and be like, you're not as funny as they are.
And the most haunting thing about that is
you can't outwork talent.
And comedian Hassan Minaj shared
where he met his now wife.
I was like, was our experience like a frat?
It's like, no.
Because in frats, like everyone is having sex
but no one is in love.
But on the competitive Bollywood dance team,
everyone's in love but no one's having sex.
Listen to Joy,
101 with Hoda Kotby on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
And we're back.
We're back.
And for some reason, it seems to be renewed interests from Christians in Noah's Ark.
What's that story?
About big flood or something?
Yeah, dude.
I don't know.
It does seem like if there is a giant flood that wipes out civilization, there's like all
these like culture, there's, I think there's a movie. Yeah, the director of what, either the writer
or the director that we were just talking about in the Star Wars story have a movie called,
Here Comes the Flood coming out in 2027. Jesus. Anyways, the team of, we're going to call them
researchers are making headlines for claiming that they have new evidence proving that they've
discovered the final resting place of Noah's art.
You'd have to use so many scare quotes in that sentence.
You just used researchers have found evidence.
Evidence, quote unquote, proving.
So this is apparently a thing that people are thinking they're going to find and
that it's still, that it actually exists.
They're currently drilling at the Drupinar site near Mount Ararat in Turkey in order to
and I definitely pronounced all of those words exactly correct.
And they're going to send down an underground robot to investigate
what is either a 4,000-year-old boat
or just a giant vagina-shaped rock.
Have you seen the rock?
It is very volvastic.
Oh, my God.
It's kind of like the first thing I said,
I was like, come on, you guys are playing, bro.
Yeah.
This is a geological vulva that has sprouted up
from the earth.
Yeah.
And to look at that,
and instead of being like, man,
the earth really,
nature really has a,
has a type.
Yeah, right.
Nature is always creating certain shapes.
That Georgia O'Keefe wasn't too far off, huh?
Yeah.
This is,
they're like,
that's Noah's Ark.
I can,
I can smell it.
That's the,
that's the freaky little God boat.
Because the Lord said to Noah,
there's going to be a floody,
bloody.
I remember this guy
that I came across
in the Amelia Earhart research
who spends his life
scanning the bottom of the Pacific Ocean
looking for the plane
that she went down in
just like anything plane-shaped
and again
he's very Star Wars
development team
in his approach
because once he sees something
that's plane-shaped
he announces that he's found
Amelia Earhart's plane
and everyone's like,
Whoa!
And then he, like, he has the global media's eyes on him, and he's like,
want, want.
Guys, it turns out it is the cruelest rock formation in the history of the ocean.
It's like, all right, man.
Sorry, guys, it was another crab orgy again.
I didn't, damn it.
I'm going to find it, though.
Yeah, I mean, these people are so desperate to prove the arc thing,
because it's just so interesting how like the way Christians work like when there's a scientific thing that base is like bro come on guys like this wasn't God like this is this is scientific they have to go like going to give you an out we're going to let we're going to give you a nice out you're going to say that this was figurative you were using poetic license there's not an actual boat but uh you know this is the nope I'm going to prove to you right because
I think it goes, there's like how conversations go with atheists.
They go, there was no fucking boat that Noah put two of every fucking animal on to save the biodiversity of this planet,
4,000 years ago.
It wasn't all in one place.
And then, so they have to go, well, shit, the only way I can prove this person wrong is to find the fucking boat that all these things on it.
Otherwise, I'm fucked in this, in this logical argument.
I'm in with this person.
Brian the editor makes a really good point in the chat.
isn't proof the opposite of faith?
Like, your whole thing is faith and that you're believing, but they're like, nope, I got to
prove these fuckers wrong.
Sure, sure.
So this is being done by a group called the Noah's Ark scans, backed by former Delaware
Senate candidate and Christian activist Lauren Witsky, who has suggested the Big Bang
evolutionists are already in damage control mode.
See?
That's because that's all they're thinking.
They're only like, how do I put my
ideological ops
on the back foot with a discovery?
And they're like, oh, they're hating this.
We found proof that, you know,
gods out there.
As soon as the ark is uncovered,
Darwinism will be dismantled.
What does she think is going to be on the art?
Like, it's going to be like
boy monkey, girl monkey skeletons.
Like all is that?
Holding each other like that couple in the Titanic.
Because like that's also not
how Noah's the arc
works.
Guys, what if they did find the ark
and on the ark there were
animals and the animals
did actually reinforce
evolution.
Like, wait, we don't know this kind
of monkey, what the fuck?
They were evolving.
There's like, you can chart the evolution
in this one room of this one species.
But in keeping with the right
turning everything into a grift,
Noah's Ark Scans is already charging people $3,600 for a tour of the site,
which seems like a normal price.
And Witsky claims that the apartment belonging to the founder of Noah's Ark Scans
was ransacked and burglarized and that the thieves stole basically anything they thought
he might have stored the Noah's Ark evidence on.
So, and that the attacks are borderline demonic.
uh the lack of evidence that is going to come from this has nothing to do with their not being
evidence and has everything to do with uh the fact that satan is out to get them i think um she's got
i mean she's a freak this lauren witsky person are you familiar with her way i mean you have
an amazing ability to remember political uh people's names that i think i got like five of them yeah she i mean
She ran in like 20,
for Senate,
but like she didn't have a chance because she's absolutely lost her head.
Like she's like predictably,
she's like anti-choice.
She thinks black lives matter.
People are terrorists.
She's COVID was satanic.
The earth is flat.
Gay people are demonic.
Pharmaceuticals are a form of witchcraft.
I'm just going through her,
just like her own website.
She was a big Q&O person.
In this house, we believe.
Yeah. Israel did 9-11.
And she was like, I was also reading on her Wikipedia, she was arrested for possession
of like methamphetamine and heroin driving under the influence and resisting arrest,
quote, after being found unresponsive within a car parked in a busy Tennessee intersection.
That was a demonic plot.
Yeah.
They got me hooked on that stuff.
Exactly.
But I mean, like, it's just one of these people who's just, when you just love.
look at their life. You're like utter chaos.
And yeah, looking to do stuff like this. I'm sure like grift people out of money and be like,
we're going to get this scan. I'm telling you. I'm telling you.
This is going to turn it around. Yeah. And finally, we do like to take a quick look at the
weekend books office where primetime came in number two. The number one movie at the box office
this weekend was Avengers End game Encore. Oh, that's a thing. I saw that.
that. I was like, what? There's a re-release?
It's just Avengers Endgame with some
additional post-credit shit.
Basically, the movie equivalent
of Malibu Stacy with new hat.
With new hat.
Of course.
It has new hat.
Got Lisa's ass.
Number two was
Primetime. Starred Robert Pattinson
as Chris Hanson. The reviews
were mixed to positive.
The
performance is apparently unhinged.
And so I like to see he always he always takes big weird swings Robert Pattinson
I love I do like it Chris Hanson who is still alive and out here doing his catching a predator thing and totally fine and totally fine about it seems normal
He's like this doesn't bother me at all
He actually went to the movie posted pictures of himself shoveling popcorn into his mouth
while being, you know, ripped to shreds on screen.
And then was just hanging around outside the theater
waiting to be interviewed by people,
which people obliged.
Wait, he really just walked out of here.
The post said, well, I saw primetime.
My reaction tonight on my podcast.
What the fuck?
You just had somebody covering B-roll.
And so in and out of reality, it's hard for me to, you know, obviously I'm not objective because the character is, you know, me.
But it was so detached from reality or anything I've ever experienced then or now doing the investigations.
I just think it's, I'm not sure what the point of it was.
I'm really interested to see it.
And it's like, really just like this very artistic commentary on his like desire for fame.
It's just like so odd.
Like I never did any of this stuff.
I don't even get it.
Like this doesn't even make sense.
the person who interviewed him, Brian said,
should have said,
Chris,
why don't you have a seat over there?
Yeah.
Then he decided to offer his criticisms of the film
during a podcast interview with Jesse Waters.
Oh, yeah.
Not surprisingly,
not a fan.
And he also reminded everyone that the film industry
was led by one of the most prolific predators
to walk the planet Harvey Weinstein
and then implied that the director of Primetime
might be a pedophile with an,
agenda.
Jesus Christ.
If you like movies or like work in movies, yeah, you're actually on Harvey Weinstein.
He really said, he goes, there's an agenda there, perhaps.
Maybe we should look at Lance Oppenheim's transcripts.
Wow.
Really, dude?
Having a normal one.
Yeah, he also used AI to add his face onto the Robert Pattinson standing in a kitchen,
wearing a track suit meme, which I was, I had seen that.
picture a bunch. I didn't know
where it was from. Apparently it was from
early, like, character
work for good time.
So it was
posted by one of the
Safty brothers. I see.
Well, two can play that game.
He's so...
Dude, Chris Hansen, you... I don't know.
I mean, honestly, you should... This is only just
making people want to see this
take down of you or just this depiction
of this moment in your career
more, I think. Because it's just so...
When you're the subject of a thing and keep going,
I'm not bothered at all. It's great.
And you just keep doing stuff.
I actually love it.
I mean, this is, he is a grifter who's like just,
just wants attention.
And so having a movie made about him is a great opportunity for him to kind of call attention to himself.
Yeah.
Yeah.
All right.
Those are some of the things that are trending on this Monday, September 28th.
