Starting point is 00:00:00 There's so much beauty in Mexican culture, like mariachis, delicious cuisine, and even Lucha Libre. Join us for the new podcast, Lucha Libre Behind the Mask, a 12-episode podcast in both English and Spanish about the history and cultural richness of Lucha Libre. And I'm your host, Santos Escobar, emperor of Lucha Libre and a WWE superstar. Listen to Lucha Libre Behind the Mask on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you stream podcasts. I'm Dr. Laurie Santos, host of the Happiness Lab podcast. As the U.S. elections approach,
Starting point is 00:00:35 it can feel like we're angrier and more divided than ever. But in a new, hopeful season of my podcast, I'll share what the science really shows. That we're surprisingly more united than most people think. We all know something is wrong in our culture, in our politics, and that we need to do better and that we can do better. Listen on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you listen to podcasts. In 1982, Atari players had one game on their minds, Sword Quest, because the company had promised 150 grand in prizes to four finalists. But the prizes disappeared, leading to one of the
Starting point is 00:01:14 biggest controversies in 80s pop culture. I'm Jamie Loftus. Join me this spring for The Legend of Sword Quest. We'll follow the quest for lost treasure across four decades. Listen to Table for Two with Bruce Bozzi on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hello, the internet, and welcome to this episode of the Brooktrend Nets. I am Jack. I am. That is. I am living like a bone.
Starting point is 00:02:14 There's somebody bone, bone on my birthday deadpan. Birthday deadpan. Birthday deadpan. The famous birthday deadpan. I'm Jack. That's Miles. The famous birthday deadpan. I'm Jack. That's Miles. Hey, Miles.
Starting point is 00:02:27 Hi. Hi. This is What's Trending as the title of today's episode references. The big news in this moment is that James Harden is going to be traded to the Brooklyn Nets. For non-NBA fans, James Harden is a two-time MVP, frequent leading scorer in the league, showed up a little bit out of shape, one of the Hall of Fame strip club patrons. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:03:02 Single-handedly, a lot of people say him leaving houston will devastate the local exotic dancing economy people have uh somebody did a spreadsheet on reddit uh ranking his like kind of doing a statistical analysis of his performance uh as it relates uh to concentration of strip clubs per capita. Concentration and quality of strip clubs. And there is a non-negligible statistical analysis. Yeah, or statistical correlation. So, yeah. He's moving.
Starting point is 00:03:40 Look, just to distill it down, there needs to be super teams now. We're in the age of how can we concentrate a bunch of talent to win things. It's happening in many sports. But this one, having for the Brooklyn Nets, Kyrie Irving, Kevin Durant, and James Harden on paper looks fucking wild. Like an NBA jam team that you would definitely play with now how those three pieces actually end up playing together on the court is i think i'm very curious to see how that all ends up i feel like they would be the best nba jam team of all time you're gonna have lebron in an
Starting point is 00:04:19 nba jam team oh yeah that would be that that's what it would be never mind sorry yeah i'd swap out lebron for kairi like kairi kd and harden would be interesting yeah or like i mean lebron but just whatever this is the ability the shot making ability of all three of those guys but i guess you know lebron would just be they would find some way to make his his skills translate right right right uh anyways yeah turn on nba fans i apologize for opening the show with nba again wants to let she's been screaming this since we talked about it james harden kairi and katie's gonna be the mean girls of the nba and i don't know i feel honestly my heart goes out to the fans in houston um because james is so fucked up the way he that press
Starting point is 00:05:05 conference last night where he just dragged the whole fucking organization like i don't know fucking talent there's a problem i've done everything i can they don't have heart they're bums i don't know what else to do y'all i gotta go cut to he's out of my hands yeah yeah james harden came like didn't even show up for a lot of preseason stuff, came in, looked a little bit out of shape. Kyrie is taking Tom away from the team after the Capitol riots. And, you know, he's just traditionally been a dude who is kind of like off in his own world, famously mentioned some flat earth theories uh and then kd is obsessed with like getting credit for winning a title but he so he won a couple titles with golden state but didn't get credit because he was with two other like superstar guards and people were like ah you just like bought a tight you just like went to a great team um so this almost seems like it's counter what he was going to brooklyn
Starting point is 00:06:11 for in the first place because now he's part of another super team can you imagine if they like they they actually end up pulling it off and then like man but kairi and hard in the right they were instant. Durant said, come on, man. Our sympathy goes out to Houston fans. Our sympathy goes out to Nets fans as well. This is going to be a real roller coaster. I have a couple of friends who are like diehard Nets fans who were adamant that they didn't want this to happen. Oh, really?
Starting point is 00:06:43 I mean, it makes sense because it's... James Harden has a way with things, and I'd hate to see it. Like, how... When you say your friends are, like, diehard Nets fans, like, we're talking, like, fucking Kendall Gill Nets fans? Yeah, like, grew up in Jersey.
Starting point is 00:07:00 Okay, all right. Shout out to you. Diehards. Derek Coleman. Didn't Derek Coleman play for the Nets, too the nets too yeah yeah he was drafted first wild yeah uh the the nets uh have stabbed me in the heart multiple times so i have a complicated relationship with them but i this is gonna be i don't i don't know anybody who's not going to be watching this who's an nba fan because this is like such a weird experiment to have three
Starting point is 00:07:25 of the best scorers but like also very ball dominant meaning like they need the ball in their hands to make things happen like guys in the history of the league. Can they play nice? Yeah will be interesting. Let's talk about what's happening in the capital. There's a bunch of
Starting point is 00:07:42 pictures of National Guard troops like just piled up like it looks like i got nowhere to sleep yeah they're they're just sleeping in the capital because they've all just been moved there all of a sudden uh without any accommodations being kind of made uh so the capital it was that in the capital where there's just bodies like where they seem like they're piled up on top of each other they're sleeping wherever because they have nowhere to quarter them um and you'd think like for these hotels where they're being like no rioters you
Starting point is 00:08:16 could be like the national guard troops whatever uh but i think yeah the thing that we're looking at is 20 000 troops you know uh which a lot of people like that's more troops than we had in iraq and afghanistan uh but we that's what's going to happen because suddenly uh the government just made a on the national stage embarrassed itself by like white supremacy white supremacist terror and like oh shit yeah okay fuck that let's uh let's let's take this threat seriously because plenty of people they're still out online saying this shit about we're going to surround the capital we're going to surround the fucking supreme court the white house armed like we are going to make sure joe biden isn't president um and then the joint chiefs put out a rare statement that basically said Joe Biden is the new president.
Starting point is 00:09:06 Fuck around. Find out. Yeah. So I don't know. A lot of a lot of tough talk. We'll see if that dissuades this death cult of people who are still very much enthusiastically trying to figure out a way to keep dear leader in office. office but yeah now they just have to take to the comments and uh replying to other people's tweets because there's not like a a hub where they're like allowed to they can't just congregate around the president's tweets or like on parlor so just seems like you you're seeing a lot of them
Starting point is 00:09:36 just like commenting on stories being like yeah civil war ii ha ha ha it's like okay uh-huh yeah what you want i guess just i mean we we talk a little bit more in depth on tomorrow's episode but uh you know the the latest on impeachment is that uh mcconnell is non-committal uh purposely non-committal uh you know more than 50 leaning towards impeachment that's as much as he's given people and it's not going to happen while trump is in office so it'll be if anything a retro active impeachment um that they'll probably then try to like get rid of on a technicality because like he'll be like well you can't impeach uh when when they're gone from the from the office because that i i think that is
Starting point is 00:10:26 some there is some legal question around that so yeah there was like some benign bullshit in like when ulysses s grant was president right there was someone that they retro like there was somebody who andrew i think it was war chief no it was another person who basically they were going to impeach and then he resigned the morning before they could impeach him. And then they're like, fuck that. We're impeached. I don't give a fuck if you resign. We're making sure like you are dealt with through this process. So I don't know.
Starting point is 00:10:58 We'll see. Either way, I haven't seen anything that feels reassuring in terms of how they're addressing this issue. We see that they've arrested all the cool people from the viral photos and been like, oh, they got ZipTag guy. They got Viking bro. They got lectern guy. They got feet on Pelosi's desk, bro. Like, sure.
Starting point is 00:11:18 But then what is, what's going to happen then? What are the, you know, what laws are going to be used to ensure that you know these fucking racists aren't able to do this again but i don't know honestly i think like anything i like most people are saying like this i don't think this it's not something that's going to be solved in a couple weeks in some cases court cases being filed yeah anne hathaway is trending because uh that's apparently not her name she uh has gone by her entire life she's gone by annie hathaway um which i don't know i had always assumed when people called her annie hathaway they were trying to do that thing where they're like bobby about robert de niro marty
Starting point is 00:11:59 jackie kennedy yeah jackie kennedy jack oh we love jack Kennedy yeah Jack we love him we love him don't don't we folks um Anne Hathaway Annie okay okay Annie we can all call her now great I'm so glad you I'm so glad you brought that up Annie because I have such the mental bandwidth to address this bombshell announcement great timing thank you so much very relevant what is your take on systemic white supremacy and creeping fascism in this country i'd rather hear a take on that but go off annie um she talked about how it was like an imdb decision where they they were asking her like what to call her and she was like well my legal name's ann and so they just put it in as that that's like apparently a thing that happens at the beginning of uh actors careers
Starting point is 00:12:45 that i didn't realize was like like uh on the uh this is important podcast with the guys from the show workaholics uh adam divine is talking about how his name like the capitalization of his name is like he basically misspelled his last name to get his own imdb page which is weird um yeah hey speaking of imdb pages uh bruce willis have you looked at his imdb page recently by the way he only i've ever looked at he has gone full like stallone or seagal where he's just in like 10 action movies you never hear about every year it's just it's an interesting like kind of wind down of his career our new segment watching latter-day bruce willis what the fuck was this shit yeah yeah i don't know i do you think it's because it can't be because he's hurting for money
Starting point is 00:13:39 i mean i've never been in everything so unless he's terrible with his money or he's one of those people who's just addicted to production and addicted to being the guy on camera and that life because i understand that if you're not doing the action you don't have the burden of the physical production and you're just the guy who gets like run around with bang bangs and then like have glycerin sprayed on you and just say fuck you into camera sure that feels like cool aggro boomer daycare yeah yeah i think that's right he he always seems so cranky in every every interview i see with him he just seems like mad to be there uh like insulted by his fame um and uh just a little like doddering um but he uh going along with that he showed up at a right aid and refused to wear
Starting point is 00:14:27 a mask and was asked to leave like was he saying fuck a mask like i'm not like was he on some anti-mask or shit or he just thought he he could do that because he's bruce willis he thought he could do that because he's bruce willis and then uh made a statement that was clearly not written by him that was like hey fellas mask, fellas, mask up. All right. Bruce, what was that? It was an error in judgment. Be safe out there and everyone, let's continue to mask up. Everyone, let's continue to mask up.
Starting point is 00:14:55 All right. John Mask Lane. Yeah. And finally, Premier League is trending. Tell me why. It's like anything, right? The NBA worked because they had a bubble you know during the pandemic they were like the way we can do this is to ensure by ensuring the safety by having a controlled environment the the english premier league the professional the top tier of english football um there do covid is just popping up all over and it's like starting they had a good
Starting point is 00:15:27 grasp over it when they have like project restart when they can like finish the season out in the middle of summer like a lot of leagues did and now going into this season it's just they're they don't know how to control things and like the last thing they were saying was like uh players please stop um hugging each other uh if you can on the pitch so maybe that will help and everyone's like uh this this may be a little more complex than being like please y'all do not hug um so yeah there's just a lot of like postponement of matches and things happening and i think it's you know at a certain point it's like what how do we what do we where are we what's the best way to do this still? Cause it's still a pandemic. And there's even managers who
Starting point is 00:16:07 are like, it just feels odd to keep trying to do this in a safe way. Given the fact that we're in the middle of a pandemic where many people are unvaccinated. So what, what is this about? And it's about money, obviously ad revenue. That'll be nice. i mean the nba even is missing that bubble because they are now you know having road games and playing at stadiums without audit without crowds um but it's you know they they had to postpone a hawk sons game um due to covid protocols which is actually a game you would watch this year because they're both really good young teams. So they're having to up their protocols to restrict guests in road hotels, which then is like, but these are adult humans.
Starting point is 00:16:56 What are you, like what's happening? Like just do the bubble if you're going to do that. Yeah. So again, I just want to say it was the sports minister, Nigel Huddleston, who said, y'all COVID, we had to,
Starting point is 00:17:09 we had to dead kissing and hugging, hugging and kissing out there for regular people. So it's the same thing if you're on the pitch. So please no hugging and kissing. Nigel Huddleston. He is a American, right? Oh yes.
Starting point is 00:17:23 Nigel. Wonderful Patriot name. Nigel huddleston he sounds like someone who's at the uh capital yeah storming the capital nigel huddleston also character in bridgerton i think yes yeah the duke of hastings seed pot thank you nigel yes yes your highness yes your excellency or whatever the my lord yes my lord what a show
Starting point is 00:17:51 pull out the show pull out the series alright well that is gonna do it for today's episode we are back tomorrow with the whole last episode of the show until, be kind to each other. Be kind to yourselves. Wear a
Starting point is 00:18:08 mask. Wash your hands. Don't do nothing about white supremacy and we'll talk to you all tomorrow. Bye. Bye. Please. Delicious cuisine and even lucha libre.
