Hello, the Internet, and welcome to this special edition of the Daily Zeitgeist, in which we give out our geisters or geisties. What do you want to say? Let's let's decide right now.
Starting point is 00:02:21 The geisty. Geisty. Boom. Done. We're giving out our geisty to the song that captured the zeitgeist this year. I am Jack O'Brien. I am joined, of course, by my co-host, Mr. Miles Gray. Hello. And we're thrilled to be joined in our third seat by the hilarious stand-up comedian, Maggie May. Yay!
Starting point is 00:02:38 And so we're going to get right into this. The goal here is to try and select a song that captures like the Zyka. It's not the top selling song, may not be the best song of the year. It's the one that sort of represents this year. Like a good example is the song Give Me Shelter when that came out from the Rolling Stones. Sorry, Pappy. No, no. In the same, I was not alive.
Starting point is 00:03:06 But so anytime that year is portrayed in film, that song is played. Right. Now, at the time when it came out, it wasn't even a single. Like, but it was, you know, on an album that came out that year. And it was like a deep cut that people loved so we're trying to find that song that like in 20 years when people are you know making a movie about the year 2017 this song will play yeah whoever the scorsese of 3088 is right like oh you've got to play magnolia by playboy cardi if we're talking 2000 what is it 17 yeah so we're gonna go through uh our list we we created a list of like 10
Starting point is 00:03:45 nominees and then we're going to make some cases for some of them. For songs and albums that captured the Zeitgeist. And again, this isn't, we're not music critics. We're trying to just figure out what song embodied 2017. What album embodied 2017? So we're going to start out
Starting point is 00:04:02 with De La Fita. Yeah, by Daddy Yankee or Daddy Yankee. Damn Yankee. Wow. Jackie boy. Who's that Damn Yankee guy? Damn Yankee. Daddy Yankee and I don't know the other guy's name. And featuring the Biebs. I think we have a clip. Ooh, Despacito. Quiero respirar tu cuelo despacito. Yeah, it's crazy because damn Yankees I always thought were like a metal band from the 80s.
Starting point is 00:04:53 And now they're, no. No, it's Daddy Yankee and Luis Fonsi. Okay. And I think it captures, there was definitely a Latin vibe to the year, whether you're looking at, you know, Drake released an album with some sort of Latin-ish rhythms. Yeah, world rhythms definitely took the charts, I would say. Beyonce's doing it. Beyonce's doing it. Oh, that remix with J Balvin?
Starting point is 00:05:18 Is that what we're talking about? Mijente? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And that Havana song that is everywhere right now uh what's that song uh it's called havana oh or habana i think i'm living in a cave yeah you you might be i use the daily zeitgeist to find out everything that's going on so i fought myself all right up next i think is
Starting point is 00:05:40 miles's pick uh we'll we'll come back to what we all vote for at the end. But up next, Miles, why don't you introduce us? Oh, my song? Okay, so for me, I think Bodak Yellow is the song of 2017. Just from, like, it embodies so many different things. This was, like, a great year for people of color, women of color, women in general. This woman came from, like from straight-up obscurity and just from a VH1 show, and her charisma created this whole career.
Starting point is 00:06:11 And Bodak Yellow, I'm telling you, I don't know one person who does not know the These Is Bloody Shoes song. And again, first of all, she broke records too. It was like 19 years since a female woman of color, solo artist, I think in the rap category, had a number one hit since Lauryn Hill, right? So there's that. Also, this song generated so much heat around the idea of red bottoms that there was a fashion industry report that it said it created $4.5 million of media value for Christian Louboutin. Right. I don't know how
Starting point is 00:06:45 that exactly translates but like search traffic for louboutin spiked like 271 sales went up yeah so she's like you know cardi b she's like the unlikely hero of 2017 and she's the most humble person anyway you guys already know cardi b you know bodak hill let's play the song really quick. any moves hey hey i don't gotta dance i make money move if i see you now speak that means i don't fuck with you i'm a boss you a worker bitch i make bloody moves gonna do what to who let's find out and see cardi b you know where i'm at you know where i be you in the club just to party i'm there i get paid a fee i've been out the bank so much i know they're tired of me look it infected my brain so might be biased, but that's my case for Bodak Yellow. Shouts to Cardi B.
Starting point is 00:07:47 I mean, it felt like, you know, like this was a good year for her. And it has kind of like a menacing, dark vibe, which I feel like is appropriate to the year. Like it's like violent and bloody. And she basically copied Kodak Black's flow for the song. So it's derivative too which is like most media this day you know i like i can't look that's true though the things go on the facts go on right and she's a blood witch and she's a blood yeah i don't know what that has to do with this year i don't know but she is so in the streets that she's still like she's probably not one to
Starting point is 00:08:20 fuck with either right um all right up next is our so like we said it's not necessarily about quality guys and uh i i want to put in a vote not necessarily for uh this being the song but for at least considering uh what i call that terrible fucking taylor swift song uh which i don't even i haven't even committed the name of it to look what you made me do, which I think it's appropriate to the year because this was a bad year. Just generally, like if you're going to look back on on the year, a lot of bad things happened. And this is an objectively bad song. It's just terrible.
Starting point is 00:09:07 bad song it's just terrible um and i feel like the people who made it a bad year were not acknowledging their complicity in it it was all about people doing shitty things and then being like look look what you did and i feel like that's what she's doing she's like writing a terrible song and then blaming other people in the title of it for making her make that terrible song which just seemed very appropriate to me. But you like some Taylor Swift songs. All right, man. No, I'm just saying. Look, I like Shake It Off.
Starting point is 00:09:31 Yeah, I'm saying you're not biased. Shake It Off is a good song. You're not out here throwing darts at a Taylor Swift poster. I fucking love Shake It Off, okay, man? That's fine. Especially the Hood Internet Shake It Off remix with Backseat Freestyle. Oh, really? That'll make you like Shake It Off.
Starting point is 00:09:49 That one? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay. Maggie, you also like Taylor Swift, right? But this song rubbed you a little the wrong way? Yeah. I can get down with some Taylor Swift songs. But this one, I was like, that's the line.
Starting point is 00:10:01 What exactly about it pushed you over the edge? Should we listen to it? It just doesn't sound good. Okay. that's the line. What exactly about it pushed you over the edge? Should we listen to it? It just doesn't sound good. Okay. Let's hear it. Let's make sure it doesn't sound good. Oh, look what you made me do. Okay, I think you got that.
Starting point is 00:10:13 That's fine. Yeah, we're good. So that was... That nonsense whispering. Look what you made me do. Shut up. Look what you made me do. You're not Britney.
Starting point is 00:10:21 Oh, yes. You can't get away with doing that. You're not Britney. Her Instagram is not as authentic as Britney's either. Yeah, you don't have any Snapchat filters on you. And she was very representative of what was problematic about the year also because she refused to disavow Trump. And then a lot of her followers ended up being – she released an app. She released an app.
Starting point is 00:10:42 When you looked at what was going on in that app amongst her fans it was just like a trump it was like a trump troll forum yeah festival of being like people defending why they voted for trump the thing just like you thought it would be a bunch of you know taylor stands or whatever they call themselves swifters or swifters or whatever yeah like just commiserating like hey we love taylor but it's like dry swiffer yeah there are people who are like oh my god you know like talking about trump and it's like it's just devolved into this weird thing which again it shows you like i'm you know breitbart a few years ago or it's like oh she's like a like a far right icon yeah she's an aryan goddess yeah and then right and then the day it was at the daily stormer uh what whatever neo-nazi site was like yeah she's an aryan goddess and then she like refuses to fully disavow these people yeah and then you look she starts her app
Starting point is 00:11:31 and look who's on the fucking app right it's not like young you know people of color being like hey let's talk about like getting to get you know it's like it's a bunch of how do you get from from a musical app to like you know what p.s i hate everyone not like this arian goddess like yeah yeah the stuff in there is weird like there are a couple screen grabs where people are just saying like i don't i don't really tolerate gays lesbians or bisexuals like why why do you need to post that in the taylor swift app why i've never been on a musical forum where i was like i need to also talk about my political views. These people love Our Lady Peace, but they need
Starting point is 00:12:08 to know how I've also felt about identity politics. Right, exactly. But hey, it did well. Yeah, her album did well. The song was doing well until Cardi B knocked her ass out of the top spot. Which is why, again, Cardi
Starting point is 00:12:23 is the hero. She's the dragon slayer. um but i do think that it's also an example of how like so what she did was basically by omission she did not like take a side which used to be okay like jordan when he was having like his career and the most famous person on earth. He was just nonpolitical. He wouldn't take a side. He was just like corporate cool guy. And that's sort of what Taylor Swift is. And now you can't do that anymore, I don't think.
Starting point is 00:12:54 I think we're at a point where things have become so toxic that you have to – if you have fans who are awful people who are doing horrible shit in your name, you can't just sit back and be like, yeah, I don't know. It's not me. I don't want to say anything. Let the people of Alabama decide. Right. But it's like, yeah, again, let the people of Alabama decide. It's kind of what that is. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:13:16 Yeah, and she's, hey, look, Taylor, you're a great songwriter. Just that song. Whatever. Yeah. Whatever. That was a draft. She was just like, you know what? Fuck it.
Starting point is 00:13:26 Put it out. I mean, yeah. Who knows? She was focused, though, because, man, that PR machine to keep Cardi B when it looked like Cardi B was going to take her spot, they did a lot of things to try and make sure she stayed on top by seeding that song in internet videos that would count as a spin to keep that number one spot. There was some dark tactics going on to uh to keep cardi b out of there but again you can't stop the truth you can't stop darkness cannot exist in the presence of light yeah uh all right we're gonna take a quick break we'll be right back
Starting point is 00:13:56 definitely caruana galizia was a maltaltese investigative journalist who on October 16th 2017 was murdered. There are crooks everywhere you look now. The situation is desperate. My name is Manuel Delia. I am one of the hosts of Crooks Everywhere, a podcast that unhurts the plot to murder a one-woman WikiLeaks. Daphne exposed the culture of crime and corruption that were turning her beloved country into a mafia state. And she paid the ultimate price. Listen to Crooks Everywhere on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. When you're just starting out in your career, you have a lot of questions. Like, how do I speak up when I'm feeling overwhelmed?
Starting point is 00:15:06 Or, can I negotiate a higher salary if this is my first real job? Girl, yes! Each week, we answer your unfiltered work questions. Think of us as your work besties you can turn to for advice. And if we don't know the answer, we bring in experts who do. Like resume specialist Morgan Saner. The only difference between the person who doesn't get the job and the person who gets the job is usually who applies. Yeah, I think a lot about that quote.
Starting point is 00:15:32 What is it like you miss 100 percent of the shots you never take? Yeah, rejection is scary, but it's better than you rejecting yourself. Together, we'll share what it really takes to thrive in the early years of your career. Without sacrificing your sanity or sleep. Listen to Let's Talk Offline on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. It was December 2019 when the story blew up. In Green Bay, Wisconsin, former Packers star Kabir Bajabiamila caught up in a bizarre situation. KGB explaining what he believes led to the arrest of his friends at a children's Christmas play. A family man, former NFL player,
Starting point is 00:16:12 devout Christian, now cut off from his family and connected to a strange arrest. I am going to share my journey of how I went from Christianity to now a Hebrew Israelite. I got swept up in Kabir's journey, but this was only the beginning. In a story about faith and football, the search for meaning away from the gridiron and the consequences for everyone involved. You mix homesteading with guns and church and a little bit of the spice of conspiracy theories that we liked. Voila! You got straight away. I felt like I was living in North Korea, but worse, if that's possible. Listen to Spiraled on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. I'm Dr. Laurie Santos, host of the Happiness Lab podcast.
Starting point is 00:17:00 As the U.S. elections approach, it can feel like we're angrier and more divided than ever. But in a new, hopeful season of my podcast, I'll share what the science really shows, that we're surprisingly more united than most people think. We all know something is wrong in our culture, in our politics, and that we need to do better and that we can do better. With the help of Stanford psychologist Jamil Zaki. It's really tragic. If cynicism were a pill, it'd be a poison.
Starting point is 00:17:28 We'll see that our fellow humans, even those we disagree with, are more generous than we assume. My assumption, my feeling, my hunch is that a lot of us are actually looking for a way to disagree and still be in a relationship with each other. All that on the Happiness Lab. disagree and still be in a relationship with each other. All that on the Happiness Lab. Listen on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you listen to podcasts. And we're back. So I think we're going to keep Bodak Yellow in the one spot as of right now. And up next, we have one that's more of an aesthetic thing. Like there's not like a lyrical theme or, you know, anything really that I could have identified.
Starting point is 00:18:19 Miles, maybe you're different, but it's Magnolia by Playboy Cardi. Miles and I both did that Spotify thing where it tells you your top five songs of the year. And I think it was number one on both of our lists or it was up there. It was definitely my top five. Yeah, definitely top five. And I felt really bad because like it said, like I had the listening habits of like a 19-year-old. Right. Yeah, me too. Look, maybe my palate isn't as refined right now.
Starting point is 00:18:40 But it's just a cool song that, I don't know. Can you think of a way that it like represents the year and embodies the i think the well i guess if i'm gonna get academic about it right the milly rock uh the dance that he's referring to in the song uh became very popular and to me it's like you've you even see european soccer players like milly rocking after a goal uh after they score a goal so it's like weird like this whole song definitely like mainstream the millie rock uh and look for people who haven't seen it check out the magnolia video by playboy cardi uh it's just like i don't know it's a fun song again this isn't me we're not music experts so don't be like what is all hip
Starting point is 00:19:20 look we listen to hip-hop right okay and also we're kind of looking at just chart wise like what's performing and a majority of it is this stuff so yeah anyway peep magnolia by playboy cardi really quick whoa pierre you want to come out here? Am I dropping top? So, yeah. Again, this was a big year for mumble rapping, too. Yeah. And his album was definitely one of the better mumble rap albums too right and i think that's another reason why maybe could be a reason to
Starting point is 00:20:10 talk about playboy cardi is that like we're also seeing like hip-hop evolve in very weird ways right like there's lyricism ad-lib is like yeah huge yeah he like turns ad-lib into content kind of like exactly yeah um because if you listen're like, what was he saying the whole time? Right. It's very hard because mumble rapping has kind of become the new style. But yeah, I think that's a reason to talk about it. Did it change the world? Like, Bodak, who knows?
Starting point is 00:20:39 Right. I could see that one being used in movies just because of how aesthetically, like, just pleasing and easy it goes down. Yeah. Like, it's just got a nice vibe to it. And it sounds like an 8-bit video game in it. Yeah. It's not the most complex beat, but it goes. But, I mean, yeah, like, the number one most played song that we didn't include on this is, like, Ed Sheeran's Shape of You.
Starting point is 00:20:59 But that shit could have been released in 1996. Yeah. Like, that is... Right. It's just a pop song. Yeah. And again, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:21:07 It's just to me, that's a song that just became annoying because I heard it so much. And who know, I, again, I don't know why I'm like trying to like be so diplomatic about all this, but it was annoying fucking song. Okay.
Starting point is 00:21:18 Right. And we already know where this is going to go. I'm going to say Cardi B is the greatest thing ever. All right. From that, we're going to go into a song that brought the flute back, finally. Mask Off by Future, which people might know as Molly Percocet or Gotta Represent. Yeah. But, yeah, Mask Off.
Starting point is 00:21:41 I don't know. It was a very particular thing where Mask Off was number one on the charts. And then Drake's album More Life came out. And the song that went to number one from that was Portland, which was also a flute rap song. I was just like, yeah, why are flutes so popping right now? Return of the flute. Hip hop is ready for Woodland. Yeah, exactly. Finally, right? We're ready. Like so popping right now. Return of the flute. Hip hop is ready for Woodland. Yeah, exactly. Finally, right? It's funny too, because I remember when the song came out, right?
Starting point is 00:22:13 Like on Twitter and Instagram, so many people were covering Mask Off on their flute. Like it gave flute players to be like, hey, I'm going to flex on Instagram and actually play the flute sample. Right. So I guess it did. It really did a lot for the flute. All right. Nick, you want to play a quick bit of Mask Off for us? Mask on. Mask on. Fucking mask on. Percocet. Miley Percocet.
Starting point is 00:22:48 Chase the chick. Never chase a bitch. You take your bitch. Take your bitch. Oh, Future Hendrix. I don't like that he thinks he's like Jimi Hendrix, though. He's not that cool. He's pretty cool.
Starting point is 00:23:00 Well, okay. Well, look, we can debate that. But yeah, that's another little mumble rap again. Yeah, and it's got the nihilism that I think is appropriate to the year. Like, fuck it, mask off. Like, I don't give a shit. Fuck it, mask off. Let's just mix fucking ecstasy and fucking opiates. Right, and rob people without a mask on.
Starting point is 00:23:18 I don't give a fuck if they see my face. And also just showing your true self, right? Yeah. Because the GOP definitely had a mask off moment this year, too. Right. They're like, fuck it, mask off. Yes, we are the. Because the GOP definitely had a mask off moment this year, too. Right. They're like, fucking mask off. Yes, we are the destroyers of Earth. Fuck you.
Starting point is 00:23:28 Mask off. And also the year was dominated by drug use, in particular prescription drug use. And that Molly Percocet was like. Yeah. I don't know anybody who parties by mixing Molly and Percocet. That was a weird thing as someone who keeps their finger on the pulse of drug culture. As I would describe that future is at the cutting edge though you know he's yeah stop being so salty about russell
Starting point is 00:23:51 wilson raising your kid first move on from that um but yeah that also too crazy would not advise using molly or percocet together no yeah uh individually look use under a doctor's guidance yeah what's interesting too is like that flute sample comes off the selma musical right right so which is like a cool even sample to use like it has a significance there too of like uh this like civil rights thing it's it's it's interesting so yeah there's elements i still put out spotify mixes for people who liked the music i used on the crack podcast and i put the the original song for that on uh one of my mixes it's fucking great prison song by crilton williams yeah it's dope uh and then uh i wanted to talk about the song love galore by sZA uh as that's probably
Starting point is 00:24:38 my song of the year i'm gonna i'm gonna probably be overruled. Tell me. Hold on. Go to bat for this. So the fact that it's a love blank song, there were just love titles everywhere. There was a Lana Del Rey song. Probably my favorite song on Damn is Love. Like, if I wasn't such a badass. I obviously like the more badass songs, but like love was a really good song. But I'm just too tough to really like that song. Lorde had a song called Louvre.
Starting point is 00:25:12 It's like, I don't know. I felt like love and like just that it was like that was rattling around in the national consciousness. It's from the point of view of a woman suffering with dignity at the hands of a shitty guy uh in this case travis scott uh granted he's more like a fuck boy like kylie jenner so the song's about kylie jenner yeah well he drops a lyric that might as well be a sex crime when he uh sings let me come inside you let me plant that seed inside you it's like dude gross whoa uh which also ties this song to the most high profile zeitgeisty pregnancy of the year since travis scott did just that
Starting point is 00:25:50 to one of the jenner's uh and then i don't know the song ends with her grandma giving her the advice to speak up uh she talks about valium in a year dominated by prescription drug use it's just uh all sorts of reasons that i came up with for i think i just also really like the song so yeah it was the one that i came up with sZA had a good year yeah she had a great year she's definitely a great album yeah now she's at the point where white people ask is it sZA or a zA that's how you know you made in the mainstream because like it's like come on man you know wu-tang it's rizzo jizza and scissor did she say that's where it came from because no but i mean but it is pronounced scissor right like a scissor right uh all right let's play a little love galore Don't take it personal Personally, I'm surprised you
Starting point is 00:26:45 Called me after the things I said Skirt, skirt, all niggas Skirt up, all niggas Skirt down, you acting like me Acting like we Was it more than a summer fling? I said farewell, you took it well Promise I won't cry or bust a milk Give me a paper towel All right.
Starting point is 00:27:16 I just picture you singing this song in your car. Just done with these. I don't love these. Skirt on these. Very skilled at that. Muting myself. Yeah, that's a great song, too. And that was my gateway song to the album.
Starting point is 00:27:34 Because I didn't really check for the album until I heard that song. I was like, oh, this is a great album. For sure. All right, so do we want to come to a consensus on the song that's going to be playing in movies when they portray the year 2017? Even though Love Galore is probably mine just because I liked the reasons I came up with, I think I'll probably go with Bodak Yellow. It's Bodak Yellow for me. Maggie? Yeah, in terms of defining the year, Bodak Yellow.
Starting point is 00:28:02 And again, for people who know people be in their feelings about this like what do they know about music this is us saying what captured the year right and if you don't think it was bodak yellow come on listen to it again she knocked taylor swiss ass out of the top spot exactly um now let's switch gears to the album of the year right that's a whole other story because cardi b didn even have an album come out like a proper EP. Right. But yes, when you look at the big albums this year, uh, what are we saying? Damn.
Starting point is 00:28:30 Uh, it was probably my album of the year. The one that I listened to the most, probably the only album I listened to all the way through like more than once. Uh, because I don't know, I don't listen to albums that much anymore, but that shit was a meal. Uh, and I don't know, I don't listen to albums that much anymore, but that shit was a meal. And, I don't know, it just seemed like the album of the year, just generally. I don't know, what do you guys think? I mean, look, juxtapose Playboi Carti's rise of mumble rap with Damn.
Starting point is 00:28:58 You realize, like, hip-hop, like, we're starting to see, like, the ends of the different spectrum or continuum of what rap is looking like now. Like, you have one person who's like, i'm really about hiding in my sock and then you have kendrick who will like like just burn your brain cells as you try and like just take on all his lyricism it's wild yeah and to me that was like that felt like what hip-hop was progressing towards from like the golden era of like the late 90s because like the bling bling era got like a little weird again like it wasn't so much about lyricism and now i like the return of lyricism because that was like my favorite thing as a young hip-hop fan uh so i think yeah damn is definitely one of the most solid hip-hop albums it feels mature um you know to pimple butterfly was also
Starting point is 00:29:40 a great album but this feels like he's really like he's locking in. Yeah, it almost, yeah, it strikes a balance between like a lot of radio play on here as well as like being, you know, lyrically dense and multilayered. And I mean, it's really crazy how like this album is a great example of how hip hop is now probably the most literarily complex art form like maybe in american history like it's so like when you like just go through the lyrics and like look at all the ways uh you know he's creating meaning and uh i don't know it's like uh bob dylan does not have shit on modern hip-hop uh when you look at when you look at kendrick now when you look at magnolia. Now, when you look at Magnolia and... I mean, he's just talking about hiding crack in his sock.
Starting point is 00:30:28 Right. So it's a little bit different. Yeah, but when you look at Kendrick and Chance and shit like that, it's pretty crazy. How did you feel about Damn, Maggie? Damn was definitely one of my top albums of the year. It was fun. I love Kendrick.
Starting point is 00:30:42 He's just a master of what he does. I thought hip-hop had some good albums this year. Yeah.
