The Black Effect Podcast Network is sponsored by Diet Coke. Hello, the internet, and welcome to season 243, episode 5 of Dirt Daily Zeitgeist, a production of iHeartRadio. by Diet Coke. My name is Jack O'Brien, a.k.a. Jack Jack. He's a Lego maniac, a.k.a. Jack O'Lantern. Figured I'd give a little shout out to the original AKs and nicknames I got as a kid because the Twitter AKs were a little quiet.
Starting point is 00:02:37 Jack Off. Jack me off, obviously. Like pet names for my parents. You went to school with mean-ass people. Jack O' Lantern was the first time I remember being like, fuck you, man. And I don't know why that one's so bad. It was said with cruelty.
Starting point is 00:02:56 I could tell by the way they were saying it. I was like, Jack O' Lantern? I was like, no! Fell to my knees. Anyways, I am thrilled to be joined by a very special guest co-host, an award-winning podcast host, a writer, producer, actor, voice artist, one of my favorite singers. It's Jackie Sneel!
Starting point is 00:03:18 Jackie Sneel makes me feel fine Blowing through my mind What up, niggas? What's up, man? That's all I had. That's all I had because I forgot until like five minutes ago that I was doing this. So that's all y'all get, baby. That's all y'all get.
Starting point is 00:03:39 That's all I needed. That was like a cool breeze blowing through my soul. Blowing through the empty, hollowed out part of me that used to be a soul. I mean, that's pretty much us all right now, man. You know, we're taking away women's rights. I'm still black in America. What are we here for? You know, what are we here for?
Starting point is 00:04:01 I don't know. I don't know. We're here to have a good time. Well, we are thrilled to be joined in our third seat by a hilarious comedian, writer, and director whose writing and directing has been featured in the New York Television Festival IndieWire, The Austin Chronicle, Red Doctors. Please welcome to the show, the brilliant, the talented, Sara Drew! A.K.A. I'm Sara that I hurt you
Starting point is 00:04:29 Hell yeah AKA Sarah to bother you Is my new Instagram for everybody I lost my old Instagram account For reasons I lost my old Twitter account For bullshit reasons We're all whispering uh we're all putting our hands up to the sides of our mouth like yes i can't really whisper because then
Starting point is 00:04:50 some people will get asmr jakeesa's reasons are the worst reasons i've ever heard but the best and worst reasons but officially made me realize the fix is in and we're all fucked do we want to go into it or do we want to just i think i think anytime that we can repeat what actually happened it's it's probably worth because it's it's almost so unbelievable that it resists like my mind doesn't want to believe it it's crazy all right i'll say it i'll say theist is like, Jairus, we've heard it already. Well, guess what? I don't give a fuck. I don't give a fuck. When you are in this position,
Starting point is 00:05:30 when you're behind this mic, then you can say what you want to say. I'll also start it with this. I've appealed my ban from Twitter quite a bit, just hoping one time it'll just say, all right, fine. And it's gotten to the point now where they come back and say nah you still banned within five minutes later uh they
Starting point is 00:05:51 truly just say fuck you jackies this is what happened sorry the day the the day all the children were murdered at rob elementary what's this dude's name i refuse maddie glacius maddie glacius do you know who he is yeah sorry yeah cool like super super lib creator of like vox or one of those fucking like we need to be more centrist zines yeah my issue with this guy is i always think his name is maddie glacius right maddie glacius well he's also he's also a dumbass i'm sorry if you know him and you love him but he's a dumbass because on the day of this shooting a day where fucking almost 18 children got murdered right literally by the cops yeah yeah, bodies aren't even cold yet. This dude writes, you know, despite what happened today, this is still the greatest country in the world and people all over the world would love to live here. Something to that effect. Yeah. I wish you would join me in a rousing rendition of God Bless America down at the Capitol stairs.
Starting point is 00:07:09 yes and as i read this poem children are our future uh and then i wrote to him i should have just left it alone but i wrote to him you know i hope you stub your toe every day uh i hope you always have knee pain and i hope you always have a piece of hair stuck in your throat for saying that shit about children being murdered within 15 minutes I was banned from Twitter permanently for saying that for saying I fucking believe I was targeting I was targeting abuse is what they said yep that's it that's what got me banned from Twitter
Starting point is 00:07:35 what a platform what a country gotta love it I have a Twitter now again I'm not gonna tweet anything but if anybody wants to tag me and stuff it's sorry to bother you I love that sorry to bother you is a great AK
Starting point is 00:07:51 it's also my Instagram handle now which is way dumber than Chiquis's it's really dumb you know what do you feel like you earned your ban? no because what happened with me is well you know what did do you feel like you earned your pan no uh because what happened with me is uh well you know they were like can you verify your age and i was like yeah yeah for
Starting point is 00:08:12 sure whatever and the the date that i was just like i'll put in a fake age you know because that's my instinct because i'm a millennial you know yeah you just want to see the world burn well that's what they taught me to do millennial. You know? Yeah. You just want to see the world burn. Well, that's what they taught me to do in school. They were like, don't ever tell anyone your birthday online. That's what they teach us. And now it's like a big thing. You know?
Starting point is 00:08:34 So you put in an age that was older or younger than you are. I put in an age that was younger than I am. And it was zero years old. I put that my birth year was 2048. And I thought, that's funny funny and then i submitted it and then they were like you're under 13 so we have to uh suspend your account and then they were like well upload id and so i did but they still didn't give me my account back i was like you know what fuck it take my privacy i don't care like i just don't want to have another instagram account But then they just said no anyways.
Starting point is 00:09:09 Also, why is 2048 an option for a birth year? That's what I'm saying. Why design the menu like that? Why is any year beyond this year? It's insane. They want to catch any whippersnappers. That's their main thing. They want to catch all the sperm they can. Yeah, all the two-year-olds who know the number of the year they were born.
Starting point is 00:09:24 Right. Trying to post. trying to post selfies well at least they're you know protecting social media and discourse in this country from misinformation and uh scary rhetoric i i love that that is those are the only two examples i've heard of them trying to like cut down on those like threats of violence is Maddie Glacius's stubbed toe and then disinformation your birthday. That's an incredible tweet by Maddie Glacius. A real. It's just a real. Hey, before anyone says anything bad.
Starting point is 00:10:01 America is the greatest country in the world. Yeah. Just had to say that real quick. Just had to say that real quick. just had to say that real quick just had to say that real quick just had to say that real quick immediately in response to over a dozen children being murdered
Starting point is 00:10:14 before anyone says anything America is the greatest country in the world but wait before you say anything just remember that a lot of people in the world want to live in America because it's the greatest country in the world. And you know what? Maybe I messed up by saying, you know, that he was lying.
Starting point is 00:10:36 You know, maybe I don't know. I mean, I'll be honest, what you said was very harsh. All of those things sound terrible. They do. They do. You know what? Me and Trump, we both deserved our bans. He's actually had to get a security detail. Congress has paid for a security detail to follow him around
Starting point is 00:10:56 and make sure that all furniture in his house does not have anything sticking out on which he could stub his toe. It's costing him millions and he's he's he's so shaken up yeah all right sorry we're gonna get to know you a little bit better in a moment first we're gonna tell our listeners a couple of things we're talking about the supreme court is continuing to kill it and by it i mean us and our future offspring with a ruling that like you can't, I don't know, it was like pro-pollution. It was really like pro-rich people, anti-being able to tell people where and when they can dump toxic waste into the air. We'll talk about whether Biden is going to suspend the filibuster.
Starting point is 00:11:42 We're going to talk about, So we do have some bad news. The minions are the Zodiac Killer, it turns out. So we're going to talk about why that's the case. All of that, plenty more. But first, Sarah June, we do like to ask our guest, what is something from your search history? Something from my search history. This is straight truth, only facts.
Starting point is 00:12:03 I had to Google, where did pigs originate? Because I wanted to know if they were native to the American continents or not. And they're not. Like everything else, they're from Asia. And this led me down a little rabbit hole. I found a great website that I'd like to recommend to all of you called macroevolution.net. It has a lot of articles about documentation. I'm doing air quotes,
Starting point is 00:12:27 documentation of different animal hybrids that have either happened or people said they happened. And some of them see, and there's like a, it's a, it's a great website. It's clearly quite old. It looks like somebody like did it themselves in,
Starting point is 00:12:41 in HTML in like 2000. And there's like a little scale of the reliable crosses and anyways i found out that there's a lot of pig dog hybrids some of them are uh uh there's just a lot of like old newspaper articles where people were like a hog was born that might be a cat you know or like a dog and a pig had a baby this thing's got that body of a dog in the head of a pig or the head of a pig in a body of a dog and there's uh on here a scale of reliable crossings and the most reliable crossing is dog x wolf and then if you go further down there's like dog x bear, dog X human, dog X pig is in the middle of the yellow zone.
Starting point is 00:13:26 And then at the very bottom of the crossings is dog X hawk, the least reliable hybrid. But still one that people have attempted to document. Anyways, I think this website is great. I love this. Very happy with my Google search. I also love the, i want to know where every animal originates now uh like what in what a good jumping off point to go down every rabbit hole you could yeah rabbits do they even originate from holes that's a question that i need to know
Starting point is 00:13:59 there is a whole section on this we know they live in holes you've seen looney tunes you've seen that bug's bunny's got a whole little armchair and TV set down there. But did they originate there? Possibly at the center of the earth with the mole people. There is a whole section on, so it's macroevolution.net. It is. That is human origins that I am worried about before I even read it. Don't read that part.
Starting point is 00:14:21 Just read dog X hawk, dog X turkey. My theory of human origins rationale is the is the first big subhead so interesting there's also a lot of cute stories about like dogs that adopted a litter of pigs or pigs that adopted like a puppy and then either the pig or the dog grew up thinking that it was the opposite and then you know because they had imprinted upon a different species they then later sought out mates of that species and that's where the cuteness of the story and like where the dodo part where the dodo segment would would cut off it would be like and then he kept trying to you know this dog that was raised by a pig kept trying to fuck pigs
Starting point is 00:14:59 his whole life the end it was it was horribly lonely for the rest of their life. Yeah. I do feel like this was an entire genre of fan fiction before the advent of culture. Yes. It was just like all- Before culture. Before culture. Jack, this is culture.
Starting point is 00:15:21 Right. But when people lived on farms and stuff, this was farmer fan fiction and slash fiction. I mean, this made it into the newspaper regularly. There's all of this. What if the bat and my boy got together? Could you imagine? You would become a bat boy. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:40 I'm pretty sure that's how Batman was started. You know, what's the dude named Bill Finger and Bob Kane? I think that's how Batman was started you know what's the dude named Bill Finger and Bob Kane I think that's their names they were just like ooh okay what if a man in a bat ooh what if a man in a bat
Starting point is 00:15:58 ooh and then you know we get the greatest superhero of all time the greatest superhero of all time would The greatest superhero of all time would be Pigman. Yes. That's true. For sure. The sense of smell alone. One of the crossovers that they've got here is pig and sheep.
Starting point is 00:16:15 And it's probably the most convincing Photoshop I've seen so far. Sheep-pig hybrids? Some of them are like a photo. And then underneath the caption says a reconstruction as shown in a b okay this one says a sheep pig hybrid as shown in a bbc article and it's just a pig-shaped animal covered in sheep's fur love it yeah there and there's always like really old news articles. Like 1902 from the Minneapolis Journal, a notice about a pig-sheep hybrid that appeared in the Minneapolis Journal. I feel like, yeah, that's the one that I feel like people were waiting for
Starting point is 00:16:58 because pigs and sheep are all over the farm. And they're like, oh, man, we've been shipping these two for millennia. When are these two going to get together? And there's one article about calves and a calf dog, an alleged cow dog hybrid from an article from the Laredo Times in Laredo, Texas. And it's just written, you know, they really used to write newspaper articles with a lot of a lot of color yeah it's like uh yesterday afternoon john p dabs telephoned to the freak editor of the times they had a freak editor at the paper because they published so many stories about hybrid animals which they call freaks hell yeah to come post haste to his dairy near the holding institute at fort mcintosh and he would behold a freakiest freak that would furnish the
Starting point is 00:17:42 gorm for a good story. I'm not improvising. This is what it says. Alright, this is what the show is from now on. We're just gonna find different news stories from the freak desk. This is the zeitgeist from, what year was this, Zara? This was 1925.
Starting point is 00:18:00 Alright, just change your name from the Daily Zeitgeist to Past Zeitgeist. You're all good. that was the time when sheep were pigs and uh yeah it's uh and calves were dogs bring bring back the freak desk in addition to all the things we recommend the corporate media yeah men were men pigs were dogs and sheep were also pigs. In addition to all the other ways the corporate media needs to do a better job, they also need to do a worse job and bring back the freak desk. That's a great thank you for bringing the freak desk to our attention.
Starting point is 00:18:39 My pleasure. What is something you think is overrated? Here's something most dog owners probably know is that when it's hot outside, asphalt is really, really, really hot. So basically what I think is overrated is asphalt and related astroturf. This is, you know, we live in L.A. It's very hot here. You know, we're having to deal with different types of weather change than all the rest of the country. But a lot of places are getting really hot. with different types of weather change than all the rest of the country. But a lot of places are getting really hot. And one thing that is making cities even hotter than they actually need to be
Starting point is 00:19:10 is asphalt. It can get like 50 degrees hotter than the temperature. So if it's 100 degrees outside, asphalt will be 150 degrees. And astroturf actually is worse. It can make it like 80 degrees hotter on the astroturf because it's just plastic and it heats up and it gets really hot and it kills the soil underneath. So I think I know in L.A. we've been like talking a lot. The city talks a lot about low water solutions and not all low water solutions are actually good for climate change overall. So anyway, there's a very cool organization called Angelenos for Green Schools that I've
Starting point is 00:19:49 been following lately. I'm not involved with them, but I do think what they're doing is good. Basically, the LAUSD is like a huge landowner in the city, and they're trying to depave a lot of the schools by basically removing a bunch of pavement and put in gardens, native plant gardens. That's a great idea. by basically removing a bunch of pavement and putting in gardens, native plant gardens. That's a great idea.
Starting point is 00:20:09 Now, my candidate of choice for mayor, Rick Caruso, is telling me that the best, most low-water choice is just put pavement over everything, make everything the grove. That is correct. Citywide grove. It is low water unless you do what a lot of people do, which is hose down their pavement with water. If you live in Southern California, please, God, do not do this.
Starting point is 00:20:32 But no, actually, it's not going to help cool your home. Yeah. No. What people be wet in the concrete? Yeah. I've never heard of this before. I mean, like, you know, when I was growing up, we had a lawn and we would have have you know that the sprinkler that went back and forth and shit yeah and you know the concrete get wet then but it was for the grass it was just because it was too much water yeah like spraying but people what's that for what
Starting point is 00:20:56 do they what do people do that for spray the concrete for to wash it instead of just to wash it they like hose it down yeah it's with like a pressure washer usually or like a high powered hose. It's a terrible, terrible use of water. And we literally are draining the state in order to have water here in Southern California. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that anybody who actually like pressure like water
Starting point is 00:21:20 or cleans the sidewalk to wash it and make it clean would also probably not want our unhoused population on that same clean sidewalk. It'd be like, get off my sidewalk. Oh, you don't think they're doing it to make it clean for the unhoused population? They ain't doing it to make it clean for people. They're just doing it to... I'm just talking about people who hose down their driveways. That's a thing that people do in, I don't know, maybe on the East Coast in places where it rains a lot. But to do it here is a really, I mean, I think overall it's a waste of water.
Starting point is 00:21:54 But we live in a very high risk water situation out here. And so I was actually talking to a friend about this and they were like, well, what if you like painted the pavement to make it white and then it would reflect heat? Would that at least help with the existing pavement? And I looked into it and it turns out there is a thing that there is a product that does that. It's basically a paint and you paint over this pavement. It's called cool seal, but it doesn't make the pavement cooler. It just reflects the heat. So it makes your body, your body just absorbs more of the heat. So it does the opposite heat so it makes your body your body just absorbs
Starting point is 00:22:26 more of the heat so it does the opposite of what it's supposed to do and it's not a good solution however it would be a pretty good solution for roofs right yeah yeah but if you're walking on it your your pants will literally catch on fire but i mean it's literally blinding like the glare is also blinding so it's not a good choice for streets so you know it's literally blinding. Like the glare is also blinding. So it's not a good choice for streets. So, you know, it's not just like crashing. You can't really make asphalt. Yeah, it's not a good solution. It's not a good solution. And it's just the numbers.
Starting point is 00:22:54 You know, if you look at the numbers of like the temperatures now and assume that they're going to go up. The kind of leeway that we've been working with, with asphalt and pavement and concrete is like all of those things are making it hotter than it needs to be. Right. What is something that you think is underrated? Oh, Eastern hats. Eastern.
Starting point is 00:23:14 Easter hats. Eastern. Eastern. Yes. Okay. So I'd say, Ooh, don't let my black grandma hear you say that.
Starting point is 00:23:22 No, Easter hats are amazing. They're highly rated and they, they're say that. No, Easter hats are amazing. They're highly rated and they're appropriately rated. I love Easter hats. No, what is underrated is, I think, Eastern styles of hats versus Western styles of hats. I've been watching this Persian drama series called Jeyron. I got into it when I had COVID.
Starting point is 00:23:44 And it's set in like the 1800s roughly like it doesn't really like you know stick to a year but it's like 1800s um up till like 1920s maybe so it's the kajar dynasty so there's like a king it's about this like beautiful girl and the king sees her and he's like i must have you and she's like no i wish to marry my peasant boyfriend and he's like no you have to marry me. Anyways, it's great. And a bunch of guys on it wear these hats that are like, I can actually, I'll send you a picture right now. Jack O'Brien has written Eastern hats. I've given you a link to a picture of a couple of these hats. They're very tall and they have no brim. And this is like an old Persian style style of hat if you've seen jesus christ superstar the the persian jews in that movie wear these really tall
Starting point is 00:24:31 cool black hats that like look kind of like pope hats so there's just like a lot of different styles of hat um it's like a beanie mixed with a pope hat yeah yeah it doesn't have a brim so it doesn't shield your face from the sun at all. It just shields the top of your head, and mostly it's about status. Makes you look tall as fuck. Makes you look super tall. Some guys have these really tall hats. Some of them are tall and kind of pointy.
Starting point is 00:24:53 Mostly they're black wool. Some guys have these little kind of round hats that it makes the top of their head look like a minion, but a black minion. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Hell yeah. I love this. I love this yeah this is a great this is a great series do you know what this hat is called the abel lincoln beanie i don't know what
Starting point is 00:25:12 any of these hats are called i'm definitely going to try and find out but here's another we will link off to a picture of it in the footnotes and you can do the research for us there's the minion hat i want to buy i want to buy some of these hats i'm looking at them now i want to buy some of these hats i have too much hair i think uh or not too much hair my hair is just throwed out so unless i'm wearing braids i can i can wear hats gives you a little room up there but yeah i want to i want to i want to buy one of these hats and bring them in fashion i wish i was in the nba that's what we need to bring these hats like to like modern fashion or to like cult to the culture into street fashion because that's when fashion need to bring these hats like to like modern fashion or to like cult to the culture into street fashion because that's when fashion hits yes is when when black folks start doing
Starting point is 00:25:49 shit that's when everybody start doing shit black folks and lgbtq people whenever whenever those communities wear fucking fashion that's when they hit the mainstream so we need like the nba and the wmba to like andBA to like bring this forward. Yeah. It's nice. It's a hat made for people with thick hair. It's like, oh yeah, you're going to pile up all your hair and then put this hat on top of it, you know? Oh yeah.
Starting point is 00:26:17 And that dramatic, you take it off and just like shake your hair out. Like Nick Cage walking off the plane in Con Air. Yes. He lets your hair hit the wind. Mm-hmm. Although it's so interesting because he has so much hair, but he's also clearly losing his hair in that movie. I know. The hairline is moving back.
Starting point is 00:26:35 But he's rocking it. But there's so much hair, yeah. I imagine right before that shot, he took his Eastern hat off. Yeah. And let the sun hit his full head and just was reveling in it but yeah the ones that i'm sending you guys are like specifically persian hats but there are very similar styles like all across asia and i think that it's just an area that we in the west have not explored fashion-wise. Yeah. This is very dope.
Starting point is 00:27:06 Glad you guys like these hats. Great. Underrated. Let's take a quick break. We'll come back. We'll talk about the Supreme Court. And then we will transition quickly to the Minions. I'm Jess Casavetto, executive producer of the hit Netflix documentary series,

Starting point is 00:30:21 on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you stream podcasts. How do you feel about biscuits? Hi, I'm Akilah Hughes, and I'm so excited about my new podcast, Rebel Spirit, where I head back to my hometown in Kentucky and try to convince my high school to change their racist mascot, the Rebels, into something everyone in the South loves, the biscuits. I was a lady rebel. Like, what does that even mean? The Boone County Rebels will stay the Boone County rebels with the image of...
Starting point is 00:30:48 It's right here in black and white in print. They lying. An individual that came to the school saying that God sent him to talk to me about the mascot switch. As a leader, you choose hills that you want to die on. Why would we want to be the losing team? I just take all the other stuff out of it. Segregation academies. When the civil rights said that we need to integrate public schools,
Starting point is 00:31:11 these charter schools were exempt from that. Bigger than a flag or mascot. You have to be ready for serious backlash. Listen to Rebel Spirit on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. And we're back. And since we mentioned Minions in the first act, I'll just say quick, quickly, you know, Minions back at theaters this weekend, big, big weekend for all Minion heads. We will get to the big news about the Minions in in Act 3 because there are a lot of conspiracy theories out there. But first, the onslaught of Supreme Court rulings that just make the world worse for humans and better for corporations continues with a ruling that basically makes it harder for the executive branch to or the EPA to limit air
Starting point is 00:32:07 pollution, which seems seems like their timing's off a little bit here. This is not not the move right now. I also just want to highlight. So the New York Times wrote this up. It was like the main headline on the new york times for yesterday morning and they did the thing where they gave the chief justice roberts opinion in detail then like a quick but what the other side is saying but then back to like the conservative opinion and they so they get the first word in they really frame it as like you, this is they're just it's a legal disagreement. There's if you read the entire New York Times article, you have no option but to conclude that, like, well, these are both people who have a much better understanding of the law than me. And they're just arguing about stuff I don't understand. And they'll figure it out. And in fact, it is a 100% political thing. Like it's 100% political. The court is in place and has been almost exclusively throughout the entire history of America in place to, you know, be a check and a balance in favor of corporations and capital from Jump Street. And then I also wanted to highlight Nancy Pelosi's
Starting point is 00:33:34 statement on this. She said, this devastating decision is the latest in the efforts by extremist and partisan Republican-appointed justices to take a wrecking ball to the health, liberty, and security of the American people. In just two weeks, the court is acted to erase reproductive health freedom, flood our public places with more deadly weapons than now to let our planet burn, which is all, I think, true. But all you had to do to make that extremely effective is to point out the mechanism, to do to make that extremely effective is to point out like the mechanism like what is causing them to do this that they are not the joker just like wanting to watch the world burn like that actually makes them sound much cooler than they are they are doing the very boring business of helping wealthy interests and capital at the at the expense of the people reading this article like that's
Starting point is 00:34:27 that is what they're doing and and it drives me crazy that like she knows that she can't say that yeah because she also takes she also takes money as well uh they also are you know uh like i you know the the separation between church and state is quickly going away um and it's all about control it's about money and control and and the things that they were doing secret they don't want out in the light right because i you can't tell me clarence thomas wouldn't have uh you know wouldn't condone somebody he got pregnant getting an abortion. If, you know, you can't tell him, I don't want to I don't want to hear it. I wouldn't believe it if you asked me. Right. Or killed before he would let them. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:35:19 Yeah. You know, that actually happens a lot. Right. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. You know, that actually happens a lot. Right. Yeah. Yeah. Or or the fact that like, you know, you want guns and guns and guns, but you won't let guns in government buildings. I wonder why that is. Right. You know, it's all these things that, you know, just shows they're very hypocritical, hypocritical, you know, speaking of Nancy Pelosi, because we all know how evil the Republicans are. But the Nancy Pelosi part annoys me because it's just so much inaction. Right. And like Biden came out today and was like, we should. And he finally is saying we should end the filibuster. Right. Get people on record to say we won't end the filibuster because we don't actually care about the things that we've been thumping our fucking chest saying we care about the past couple weeks and i i i am very confused on why our side won't do the things for the people that voted for them that the other side wouldn't hesitate to do.
Starting point is 00:36:26 If if the Supreme Court right now was six to three liberal. And they were doing all these things and Republicans somehow some way got control of all three chambers of the government presidency the house the senate they don't even need the presidency to be on just a house in the senate man we would have 40 justices on the supreme court right now they would fucking they would overload that shit they would do any and they were in the filibuster they would do any and everything to get their way. And the fact that like it feels like because it's not just, you know, Democrats are for decorum because that's what they want us to think. But they're just also because it's money, man. They want all the money and they want the power. And then when they lose half the chamber, then they can complain for the next two years.
Starting point is 00:37:21 We would have tried to get y'all shit done, but we just didn't have the votes. It was like, well, you did next two years we would have tried to get y'all shit done but we just didn't have the votes it was like well you did for two years motherfucker like you had some you had most you have you have what you could use you have what what could help i i don't know i i've had a lot to say on all of this for the past week uh it's it's very annoying it's very upset i will relinquish my time because my filibuster time is over. By all means, somebody else take it away. I mean, they're just, they're fucking everyone. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:37:55 And, Jaquese, you said why our side versus their side, but the people of the United States don't have a side actually like that's effectively where we're at there's nobody that represents them yeah yeah also can we just like one thing that's been interesting about the whole debate is like it is kind of turning people onto an idea that that the constitution might be bad actually actually. That actually maybe the Constitution sucks
Starting point is 00:38:26 and preserving or not preserving the Constitution maybe shouldn't be that big of a deal because we've moved past the need for Constitution. And it was written by slaveholders about guns that you had to chew on to fire or to load, I think. Yeah. I mean, not only is it not it's not that it's not relevant to today because it is but it's that the people who really strongly defend the constitution i think know what they're defending and they know that it was written by rich white men who owned land and enslaved people.
Starting point is 00:39:06 And it was written to preserve their interests. And they had some ideas about being different from England. But overall, it wasn't this. It wasn't. Just because they said that it was a democracy doesn't mean they designed it as a democracy. Yeah. They were explicitly white supremacists like that yeah i i i hope to god that you know if if i make a decision right now 2022 that in 3022 nobody gives a shit because like i don't want to hear from four people who would be marveled at electricity
Starting point is 00:39:47 right now like i don't know the i don't know what the world is going to look like in 3022 those guys also never experienced climate change they never experienced the shit that we are going through right now they never experienced so not only like the control and everything like that and the interest of rich white men, which is like all that is true, but they also made up the people are people are picking and choosing what men who put forth some like magical rules in the time that does not reflect the time we live in. And in any other instance, that notion would be a very easy notion to understand and rally around. But for whatever reason, they pretend some people pretend like that. Why do you think it is foreign? Well, yeah, because they're protecting the interests of rich white people and they want and they love
Starting point is 00:40:47 murdering people and they love enslaving people they want all the things that our forefathers had which is the control and on land that's not theirs on land that's not theirs yeah it's crazy and then when you read them the thing
Starting point is 00:41:03 that they did seem to feel the most strongly about separation of church and state that's the one that like the supreme court's like yeah yeah more on that later we're gonna we we kind of disagree with them on that one yeah but i mean air pollution is a thing that i think i just you know was being talked about from my my first like memory and so my my brain's just like used to it but it killed 350 000 people in the u.s in 2018 which is 10 times more than the number of people who were murdered like and that's not because like 2018 was like the bad year for air pollution it was probably like good compared to previous years it It's just like the year that like the Harvard study was like, we should actually kind of look into this because it does seem to be that
Starting point is 00:41:50 we're not paying any attention, but it's invisible. Right. So it's, and it's, it's invisible in the like literal sense. And like, you can't really see it.
Starting point is 00:42:02 It's literally not. Right. And also it's invisible because the's literally not right and also it's invisible because the media does not cover it at all because the perpetrator of the crime is corporations and massive companies that have lots of money and so instead they show you individual crimes committed that are extremely rare but you know that's that is very frustrating apparently like a a third of or rather a quarter of adult deaths from heart disease and stroke are from air pollution because if you already have clogged arteries and then particulate matter like enters your lungs
Starting point is 00:42:43 and through that your bloodstream. If it gets on an artery that's already clogged, your immune system goes a little haywire and then you get a heart attack. So like heart disease is, you know, there are many causes of heart disease and air pollution is one of them. Yeah. So we talk a lot about how like the U.S. currently has, you know, the two main parties that are like basically just like keeping the current system and the current like structures of power in place and working on behalf of Wall Street and other like, like, anything but that. It's moving in a direction of anything but that. And the fascism, it seems to be the only thing that is, like, mounting a alternative option. And, like, that's scary. But, like, in a lot of ways, the fascism is already here. It, like, it just does not look like it did in the 20th century. It looks like a nonstop thrum of like breathless news coverage every time a poor person commits a crime while ignoring the crimes committed by that big system that the two main parties are working to upkeep. keep you know i just last two things i want to say on this one it just tickles me that uh some people will when they bring up the constitution and our forefathers and things like that they will
Starting point is 00:44:13 you know talking to their blue in the face about how we should honor these things from the past but then when we tell them hey you know we're killing our planet we should like save our planet for the future they're like nah man i don't want to hear that shit i don't know it's just like all right man that's the base level thing none of the other stuff works if you don't have a fucking planet to live on if you can't go outside like a lot of business suffers it's it's insane but also i was to the last point you made jack i for whatever, for whatever reason, decided I wanted to rewatch Anchorman 2 again last night because I hadn't seen it since it came out
Starting point is 00:44:49 because I didn't really love it. And watching it almost 10 years later now, which made me feel very old, but it's almost 10 years old. And what the movie was about was the dawn of the 24-hour news cycle.
Starting point is 00:45:00 And I'm like, oh, this movie hits a little bit harder now than it did uh in 2013 even though the 24-hour news cycle was very much a thing uh we have seen the effect more so today of the 24-hour news cycle and the people who are in charge of things like fox news and the media and things like that uh in the interest and you know i'm talking about showing the crimes of poor people but not the crimes of like white collar criminals and rich people and things like that
Starting point is 00:45:29 I would just say like let's go watch that movie again if it's a very comedic look at pretty much like how that all likely started with the 24 hour news cycle it was very very interesting and very funny to watch it was
Starting point is 00:45:46 still not a great movie but it was a very fun thing to uh to watch in 2022 i i just i also think like a a important detail of the fascism that is already like in place with the big d democrats and big r republican parties is the like the social media like marketing being 100 times more powerful than what they had before which i guess was like tv ads and like newspaper ads uh which you actually could look at and be like oh that's an ad like now their access to you and ability to like warp your reality like that i think we have a sense that that is being used to sell us shit but it's also going to be used and probably already being used to, you know, sap our revolutionary imagination, our revolutionary energy, and to control our behavior, like not in an explicit, like, walk this way, sheep way, but in a more, like, you are given 1000 inputs every day day and they are all pushing you in the direction to spend money
Starting point is 00:47:07 like partake in this like big machine that is currently going and nothing is allowing for a room or a breath to be like this is they're killing us. Like this, this thing is killing us. And it's unsustainable. Jack, did you read Stolen Focus? I did not. What is Stolen Focus? It's a book about what you're describing. Yeah. I mean, that, like, that is, I think there's a lot of people saying this, but I will now read Stolen Focus and be able to cite people who have said what I'm saying better. It's good. Cool. All right, let's take a quick break and we'll be right back.

Starting point is 00:50:21 It's right here in black and white in print. A lion. An individual that came to the school saying that God sent him to talk to me about the mascot switch. As a leader, you choose hills that you want to die on. Why would we want to be the losing team? I'd just take all the other stuff out of it. Segregation academies. When the civil

Starting point is 00:50:58 When you think of Mexican culture, you think of avocado, mariachi, delicious cuisine, and of course, lucha libre. It doesn't get more Mexican than this. Lucha libre is known globally because it is much more than just a sport and much more than just entertainment. Lucha libre is a type of storytelling. It's a dance.
Starting point is 00:51:18 It's tradition. It's culture. This is Lucha Libre Behind the Mask, a 12-episode podcast in both English and Spanish about the history and cultural richness of Lucha Libre. Starting point is 00:51:51 Listen to Lucha Libre Behind the Mask as part of My Cultura Podcast Network on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you stream podcasts. And we're back so do we want to talk about the joe by what joe biden said about the filibuster i could just cover it real quick he says we have to codify roe v wade and the law and the way to do that is make sure congress votes to do that if the filibuster gets in the way it's like voting rights we provide an exception for this but voting rights, we did not get the legislation passed, I don't think. It is a mistake, in my view, for the Supreme Court to do what it did. All right, this is the, I think, most Joe Biden-y quote. I feel extremely strongly that I'm going to do everything in my power, which I legally can do
Starting point is 00:52:43 in terms of executive orders, as well as push the Congress and the public. So it just feels like, you know, they're considering thinking about possibly arranging whatever a committee to work through the various permutations around doing the right thing. But at least, yeah, he's open to it. Yeah, he's open to it yeah he's open to it i'm so tired of hearing i'm gonna try to do everything and my my executive legal power to do it which is just like all right man you've been saying that about student loans for the past year and a half you could just fucking do it man shut the fuck up and do it like it is so goddamn grating and and I I don't want to say I get it, but I see. And his old geriatric mind, what he's trying to do is he's trying to be the anti-Trump, right, which is seemingly all he wanted.
Starting point is 00:53:40 The presidency is I'm not Trump. And, you know, I i'm gonna speak softer and not be all on twitter and it's like nah man we elected you to do shit too bruh we elected you to to you know all that power we saw trump trying to wield wield that shit wield that shit for the people who put you in office man like and you know look if if it happens i will gladly eat my words but i'm not holding my breath for you know this new call to codify and end the filibuster uh because we knew the day that happened a few weeks uh a few days ago was coming for the past two months so why did you wait why did you wait until it happened to say it? You could have said that two months ago, bruh.
Starting point is 00:54:27 So excuse me if I don't necessarily buy it. I think they are feeling the pressure of the outrage and the fact that they aren't doing things like being wildly unpopular. It's just a matter of whether they will be able to do the thing. I get that. I get the outrage. But, you know, I also am old enough to remember the outrage from June 2020 about George Floyd
Starting point is 00:54:56 and how we have gone, basically did nothing. So outrage and feeling the pressure is kind of part for the course in my mind yeah they feel it they feel the outrage and they're probably also secretly hoping well this shit will pass too you know because unfortunately everything does but i don't know i'm just cynical to to it i i pray that i'm wrong. I hope that I'm wrong. I really, really do, because I just want somebody to do something for the people we put in office to do the things for us. Well, speaking of things done for us, I am going to be seeing a new movie coming out this weekend. Yeah, I think a lot of people there can be like oh you're just
Starting point is 00:55:45 doing that you're just here because your kids want to be here not true the minions rise of grew is a movie i'm looking forward to seeing um or at least i was looking forward to seeing until i found out what the minions are really about you guys so there's apparently like a bunch of um bunch of conspiracy theories about the minions which is not surprising because like it's not like they're called minions like christians are not going to have a hard time being like that they are working on behalf of satan but there's there's a bunch of like reddit threads about how the minions were programming the youth of the world into being subservient in preparation for the new world order and i mean i'm not i'm not saying this is a good point i'm just saying it's a point
Starting point is 00:56:35 that people should think about the studio behind the franchise is illumination take the on off of that and you got illuminati so i don't know do i even have to say anything else like no you don't they're saying the illuminati is on and they're saying that's who's in charge of the the minions that's that's the message they're trying to send they're just trying to get us all ready to be minions for the Illuminati, right? Okay, I get it. You know, I get it. I just saw Doctor Strange and they had the Illuminati in that. You know what I'm saying? And if I can be, you know, Mr. Fantastic or some shit, then sign me up.
Starting point is 00:57:17 I'll be in the Illuminati if I can be one of them, you know? Right. Also, I do miss the era of, you know, cartoon movies. They would always have sequels and shit, but they would just go right, right to video. Right.
Starting point is 00:57:33 Yeah. Yeah. Like the Lion King, like Lion King two and a half or one and a half or return of Jafar or like the terrible beauty in the B sequel animation. It looks like they did it in 16 seconds like as opposed to how beautiful the animation was in the movie like the sequels to animated popular movies is is not new but like every sequel to an animated movie now hits the theater and i'm
Starting point is 00:57:59 just like some of these movies can just go right especially with streaming some of these movies just go right to the streaming service. We ain't got to have the big to-do. Like, how many Minion and Gru movies do we fucking need? This is what, like the eighth one or some shit it feels like? I mean, how many Minions are there, Jaquese? That's how many movies we need. That's true.
Starting point is 00:58:17 One movie about each Minion. And to think of that. They haven't even gotten to movies about Minions yet. The movies are still about Gru. Once they move through Gru. They still kind of that. They haven't even gotten to movies about Minions yet. The movies are still about Gru. Once they move through Gru, then we're going to move into the named Minions who are named Kevin or something.
Starting point is 00:58:32 Kevin, Stuart, and Bob. Yeah, there we go. Those three guys are each going to have at least three movies each. Wow. And then we're going to move on to some of the other Minions. Yes. The forgotten minions. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:58:46 It's plug and play, baby. Okay. You know what? You're right. We'll be right back here when Minions 16 comes out. So just set your calendars. We're going to have to write minions into the new constitution so that in 3022, when they read it, they know that they can relate to us about at least one thing, minions, which are still an active franchise in their world. The minions are powerful.
Starting point is 00:59:11 Like, if you've ever watched a child take in a minion, it's a lot. It's a really interesting character design to me. And I think to everybody, you know, as many people have pointed out, they're genderless, but they have butts. And to me, it just looks like, you know, as many people have pointed out, they're genderless, but they have butts. And to me, it just looks like, I know that it's not. I know that they probably literally spent hundreds of thousands,
Starting point is 00:59:32 if not millions of dollars, developing the character design of this character, but it looks like somebody came up with it in 30 seconds. It's the easiest possible character to draw, because it has such a simple shape yeah yeah there's a lot of theories about where they came from one online claim was that that they like put out this picture of what they claimed were young holocaust victims who were subject to nazi gas experiments uh in these like suits with like single like goggles on the front and they were
Starting point is 01:00:06 like the like enough said we rest our case your honor look at these things you can you can see them in the dock they do remind you like slightly i can see where people are saying they're the except first of all they are not nazi victims that's just like the all the way the viral news version they look like old diving helmets they are old diving helmets that's exactly what they are there it is a photo from 1908 and it is adult scuba divers about to go dive in the ocean and in with like a pinhole of visibility because scuba diving was not had not really come into its own yet but also yeah the people who designed the minions were like somebody like put a took a pill and like drew goggles on it and we were like that could work and then there is like a very strange
Starting point is 01:00:58 person who is like credited as the creator of the minions who apparently if you like see this person in like in reality, you're like, Oh, minions are real. Like not, not like body shape and stuff, but just like his energy and weirdness. I just love that.
Starting point is 01:01:17 If you are, you know, for anybody who hasn't been to LA yet, if you take in a little drive on our one-on-one freeway, that a big-ass minion is like a big icon driving along. Yeah. You just see a big minion on a building.
Starting point is 01:01:33 Yeah, climbing up the valley. It's great. Sometimes when I fly into Burbank, sometimes they'll fly over Universal or near it where you can kind of see it, and I'll look out the window and be like, there's a minion. That's how I know we close. Oh, my kids point it out every time we go by it. Instant landmark. They can never take it down.
Starting point is 01:01:53 Yeah, it's a landmark. It's a landmark in LA now. And it's very funny. Hey, that's how the Hollywood sign started. Yeah. It was an ad. It was a billboard. There's so much stuff that we think of as like acceptable like cool
Starting point is 01:02:06 culture now or whatever and at the time was seen as just like a transparent like biggest ball of yarn attraction like the hollywood sign which people like now go up there and take pictures and it is actually cool to see up close because it's real big biggest letters i've ever seen in person but uh but like yeah that was started as like somebody some you know ponzi schemer being like i'm gonna build a neighborhood and put a big sign real estate agent developer yeah it's a real estate agent for sure yeah and it was just a just a billboard although i would say for the hollywood sign it would be dope if they bought back land and just had it up there saying Hollywood land. I think that would be pretty dope. Yeah. I think it needs an update.
Starting point is 01:02:52 Yeah. But it's like a retro update. It's like an update, but it's like a back date. Right. It's old, but it's new, you know? It's a throwback. A throwback update. It's a throwback. I also just thought this was very upsetting to me. I saw the It's old, but it's new, you know? It's a throwback. A throwback update. Yes, it's a throwback. Yes.
Starting point is 01:03:05 I also just thought this was very upsetting to me. I saw the actor Roy Scheider, like, on a talk show when Jaws was coming out. And the talk show host was like, yeah, it's like everybody has seen Jaws. He's like, isn't that the worst? Like, he thought Jaws was, like he thought jaws was like a terrible like joke movie like he it was clear he felt embarrassed about having been in jaws so that's bizarre yeah because it was like a it was seen as like a kiddie popcorn movie and he's like i make i make jazz movies man i'm a dancer this is this is bullshit it's showtime yeah but uh i do want to just like dig into the past so the
Starting point is 01:03:46 the mingans are like they do aid evil throughout history and the franchise like did go out of their way to build it into their backstory that the mingans were frozen between the 20s and 1968 that is incredible to me because it you know as, as, you know, as it says, it's clearly to show that they did not help the Holocaust. But what's really funny is to think that nothing on the scale of the Holocaust happened before 1920 or after 1968. Yeah. Well, but in the popular only bad thing that happened in that period of time. But look, I mean, they nailed us. They anticipated the Internet because look at this.
Starting point is 01:04:36 They found a picture of scuba divers and were like, Nazi children experiments. That's the only thing that will make people click this article. Because like in the minds of modern people, it's nazi equals evil brand yeah big yeah the worst the worst like it's just synonymous with evil yes i do so our writer just like an indiana johns yeah yeah yeah the so that's a context where where it works better sorry to keep interrupting you no that's okay i do just want to get to the fact that they did. But now we found out that they did help Hitler. That's what the new movie is all about. The new movie takes place.
Starting point is 01:05:14 It is a prequel. It takes place in early 70s San Francisco. And it's like Gru is stealing the gang's, a gang he's fighting's most prized possession possession which is the zodiac stone which okay so you're trying not to implicate them in historic atrocities but you place this movie in san francisco you bring in one bring in the name of a serial killer, like maybe America's most notorious unsolved serial killer, into the thing and put it right around the same time that that happened. So, I don't know.
Starting point is 01:05:58 It feels like they're trying to tell us something, right? Oh, absolutely. I can't wait for the mashup of minions rise of crew and scenes from david fincher zodiac zodiac yeah where people just photoshop minions into frames from david fincher zodiac yeah or you just see like things happening from zodiac in the background so zodiac did take place between 68 and 69 the or theodiac killings took place between 68 and 69. So obviously, they're not going to like show that part. But the minions were around and unfrozen in 68, I believe. And, you know, we don't know what they were up to. This movie only gives them an alibi for 1970.
Starting point is 01:06:38 They were conceivably around San Francisco, and they were doing Zodiac-related things. The Zodiac killings were also quite mischievous, much like the Minions. Yeah. They were placeful, like the Minions. Spoken a cryptic language to cops. I'm just saying, I don't know. It wasn't a code, it was their language.
Starting point is 01:07:00 Looked like Ted Cruz had some help. Yeah. Isn't he the Zodiac Killer? Isn't that what we called him? Didn't we call him that one time? Ted Cruz, well, he is the Zodiac Killer. He is. Alright. Looks like you didn't do it alone. Sarah,
Starting point is 01:07:16 it's been a pleasure, as always, having you on the Daily Zeitgeist. Where can people find you, follow you, all that good stuff? You can find me on Instagram and twitter at sarah to bother you s-a-r-a to bother you and my website is sarahjune.online yeah that's where you can follow me yeah is there a tweet or some other work of social media that you've been enjoying oh okay well so for this i i had to plug a tweet that i was
Starting point is 01:07:47 uh fortunately very fortunately involved in if you uh the account is miles clee at miles clee and the tweet is uh driving up to la from the border i realized my odometer was going to hit 80,085 miles, thereby reading boobs. By stunning coincidence, it happened right alongside the San Onofrio nuclear power plant, which looks like a pair of giant tits. We felt the presence of God in my Jetta. What? And there's pictures.
Starting point is 01:08:16 It is my pleasure to say that I was in the car when this happened. I can verify that it happened. The odometer turned to 80,085 right, right, like not right before and not right after, but right as we were passing the giant tits. I mean, it makes you think. There are no coincidences. God's trying to tell us something and it's boobs. And that is the boobs landmark of America.
Starting point is 01:08:40 It's the boobs from the beginning of naked gun where he's like everywhere i look something reminds me of her and then he looks over and sees the two giant yeah it's in a descendant song it's socal canon yeah wow that's that's amazing it was amazing you like i feel like you should buy a lottery ticket or i don't know that's's, that's truly amazing. I got to max out these blessings. I'm speechless. I mean, you know, we all,
Starting point is 01:09:08 we all need a little, a little, you know, sometimes you're like, give me a sign. It gives me hope. Yeah. You get a sign.
Starting point is 01:09:14 Give me a sign. God. Jaquese, where can people find you? What is the tweet you've been enjoying? Ah, well, you know,

Starting point is 01:09:41 Comedian Feud, if you're ever in L.A. It's always a good time, y'all. Always a good time. Been sold out the past few times. This month, next month will be no different. Demi, Adichu, eBay, and Beth Stelling are the me laugh for like 30 minutes. Now, Jack, you may appreciate this because you are a basketball fan. are very passionate about their sports teams, especially New York Knicks fans. And the New York Knicks fans have been, you know, hurting for the past few decades because the Knicks have sucked. They can't win. And so you mix those two things together and you can get some hilarity. Right. So in 2015, the New York Knicks drafted Chris Tapp's Port Singus. And Knicks fans were not happy because nobody had heard of him. He was this European player that nobody knew. And this clip is 14 seconds.
Starting point is 01:10:54 I'm going to play it for you. It's 14 seconds of a man from New York reacting to the draft pick. To what was ultimately a pretty smart pick. That was all you had to say. A New York main reacting to a draft pick. It's very funny. I am going, it may start toward the end, but we can
Starting point is 01:11:14 edit it so it starts in the beginning. Here it is. The fuck did they do? Who the fuck is this? Who the fuck is Tingus Pingus? I don't care about fucking Latvia. Starting point is 01:12:23 yesterday and just laughed every single time. It is beautiful. It is beautiful. Let's see. A tweet I've been enjoying. Miss Lindsay V tweeted. If the Barbie movie doesn't have a scissoring scene, it will be completely inaccurate.

Super producer Justin, do you have a song that we think you might enjoy uh super producer justin do you have a song that you think people might enjoy i do actually so this is from a group called daughter it's an english swiss french indie band and this song strikes a very particular nerve with me it's called the right way around this might be a bit of an esoteric feeling.
