Starting point is 00:02:10 hello the internet and welcome to the san francisco nightly zeiters uh that's a play on 49ers apparently johnny Johnny Davis. Okay. I see you, Johnny Davis. Good thing they didn't win. Good thing they didn't win. Saved some lives. Yeah, it's such a good thing. Did we ever talk about that? That is under the assumption.
Starting point is 00:02:32 Oh, because it was already there. It was already in San Francisco, whereas Kansas City, it's not even there yet. Right. If they had a big Super Bowl celebration in the city of san francisco it probably would have been a lot worse for the outbreak anyway it's weird how those all those little things have knock on effects knock on effects uh miles i i'm jack by the way good to meet you thank you oh no good to see your smiling face over zoom nice to meet you as well good to meet you sir uh let's tell the people what is trending right now bill clinton holding albums what is what is this
Starting point is 00:03:16 about it's a meme uh allow me to take you on a journey of this meme it's just like on 420 you was seeing a lot of this it's like this image of bill clinton uh if you look right here holding albums and like listening to something but people started like photoshopping other albums into it so this one's got jay dilla's donuts uh with kanye's college dropout you know i would say that's in the background someone of my taste uh who's obviously like a phrase like do you sample based hip-hop um but yeah this is just sort of like a lot of articles on like how to make your bill clinton meme or whatever and it's like supposed to be your top five albums or your top three how many albums are in the picture you can fit like four in visibly apparently it's just an app uh bt dubs
Starting point is 00:04:10 uh super producer dan will just let us know puts the albs in there automatically yeah that's the thing i'm like oh okay i guess that's where we've gone to where people search a meme to then find if someone has already made a technology for you to participate because you have absolutely no photoshop skills like i remember when the life of pablo album came out my my friend designed a website i mean he's like a really gifted designer and coder like that day he just made a website where you could type in any phrase and it would just generate a life of pablo album cover for you based on the text so i feel like this is kind of where we're at with like memes and shit where it's like someone will do more even more work to allow everybody to participate in the
Starting point is 00:04:53 meme economy god bless the internet um and bill clinton appears to be enjoying what he's listening to in the picture that's that's an important detail uh right is it is it 420 based because he smoked pot and we think that's hilarious i i could just be uh you know one of those wonderful coincidences that the universe just blesses us with god bless the universe you know uh val kilmer is trending because he has a new book out, apparently. Yeah. Yeah, I see a lot of headlines with different anecdotes, something about how he never barfed in a Top Gun jet like many of the other actors did whenever they had to actually get in the jet
Starting point is 00:05:35 and film any interior cockpit stuff. He said he was all... Apparently, people are saying it's a really... I don't know. It depends on how critical the critic is, but most people are saying it's a really, I don't know, it depends on how critical the critic is. But most people are saying like it's a really interesting read and actually really funny, you know, because he's dealing with cancer. So it's just kind of his memoirs from, you know, when you think about it, super deep career. Like all kinds, he's done it all.
Starting point is 00:05:59 He's seen it all. Yeah. Yeah. By the way, one of the things that I'm most proud of in this life of mine is that I was on a fishing boat one time with a bunch of my college friends during a bachelor party. And I think I was like one of two people on a boat of like 60 people that didn't throw up. The sea was so rough so non-vomiting pride i see you val kilmer um oh wait so do you normally just not get sick like
Starting point is 00:06:34 your stomach doesn't turn i think i've spent i'd probably spent more time on boats than those people even though i don't spend a lot of time on the high seas than one would the high seas yeah i'm used to the high seas you land lubbers you wouldn't know in lubbers uh and also i think i was a little drunk and that helped that helps i hate rides that are just rely on spinning mechanisms like centripetal centripetal centrifugal force just to kind of like like a gravitron those are just not fun like i would always do that like at a school carnival and then vomit immediately or just feel sick for the rest of the day yeah there's nothing fun or adventure like you don't get to see anything except the person across from you i guess it's kind of cool that you're sticking
Starting point is 00:07:21 to a wall but uh it does it does just seem like it's almost like a might as well just take whatever that uh stuff is that makes you throw shout out to those ride operators who in the 90s had no smartphones or even handheld tvs to distract themselves as a bunch of stinky kids like puke inside of a thing like it would be like a hand radio like a radio yeah like a magazine i'm just thinking of you know different times now different times you ever see one of those where like the ride operator like one of the kids who's like ridden it a hundred times like starts walking around or yeah like starts yeah yeah starts flexing on it's like okay we get it you've
Starting point is 00:07:59 operated this one a minute you can go backwards and know when the car comes to do a slick little hop over yeah yeah i wonder do they have mixtapes like that of carnival ride operators just doing like the most irresponsible walking on the wall but just like damn it like a guy on the zipper like walking on the outside of all the zipper cars like dude i just know how this ride moves baby there's no way i'm falling right yeah got no problems here man taco tuesday is trending this meme continues to evolve continues to be a thing yeah why i honestly i don't know why it's just i think probably because more people are cooking i feel like i see i'm telling you something i see a lot more quesadilla content from people uh it's like one of and i guess tacos are easy like you know you're just
Starting point is 00:08:46 getting ground beef chicken turkey tofu whatever and then you put in a tortilla boom and you have some semblance of a comfort meal but i honestly this reason why i put this in here is because it made me think of the quesadilla because i've seen people flex with just whatever they're like yeah it's easy to buy shredded cheese and tortillas and i feel like i've cooked something but it is a fantastic comfort food it's easy to do too and also a little salsa in there yeah put a little hot sauce whatever you want put a little you know put a turkey slice in there you know if you're feeling absolutely disrespectful but i think the thing is it's about mastering that temperature by the way't condone that, by the way. I don't. I would never do that. But this is the thing.
Starting point is 00:09:27 We're trying to survive. We work with what we have. But keep that at a medium. Keep your pan at a medium. That way, you can get good cheese melting. You're not crisping up the tortilla too much. Right, right. And finally, UCB, Upright Citizens Brigade,
Starting point is 00:09:43 the comedy theater that was kind of the second city for a generation of improv comedians was kind of responsible or at least integrally involved in the improv boom of the past
Starting point is 00:10:00 15 years has announced that they are closing down their new york operation so they're just gonna be an la outfit yeah and i guess what the new york locations are saying are permanently shuttered now uh it's just weird to think i mean you know for all the criticisms of ucb i have a few myself but it truly for a generation of comedians, it gave people this idea that there was one way into comedy and that was to do improv at UCB, get on a Herald team or mod team, but preferably a Herald team. And from there, the casting directors come in and
Starting point is 00:10:41 swoop you up. Now that did work for, there was a period when many people found success like that. But then I think as that wore on, it became, I don't know, you hear a lot of stories about people who just threw a lot of money away on that and were like, oh, right, it's a lot harder to do this. And maybe it's a lot more selective or insular than I thought. But still, just a, I don't know, it's weird. It just seems like a staple, just like a business that always has to exist in either New York or LA. Yeah, it was a big thing culturally for New York or LA.
Starting point is 00:11:10 But yeah, the talented people I know who came through there a lot of the time did not end up having the best relationships to the overall institution, kind of feeling like it was a scam a little bit so yeah well you know the the the big four of matt roberts or matt walsh ian roberts uh amy poehler and matt besser uh they a lot of like a lot of people in the theater like they have so much money like why aren't they keeping it open i mean i don't i'm sure from a business standpoint i guess they're saying it's just not feasible uh but you know it's even when you look at that group how like ian roberts i don't see as much
Starting point is 00:11:55 i thought ian roberts was one of my favorite too like like in within ucb and like even matt besters is kind of a super funny guy but it felt like like Walsh and Amy Poehler were like the ones that like fully broke through, but yeah, they're still, they're lamenting. I think the loss of their, the thing they built.
Starting point is 00:12:12 I still remember when I was much younger and seeing the video of Amy Poehler, like I think she was pretending to be a little kid on the streets of New York and it was really funny, but like, uh, yeah, like, that was one of the first things from their comedy troupe, which was Upright Citizens Brigade, and then it became this huge institution. It's also, when you watch that...
Starting point is 00:12:37 Institoosh, as we call it. When you watch that first season, the cameos are pretty incredible of, like, the people who were in the theater like in the late 90s who ended up being extras on the tv show there's some very familiar faces in there like you'll see like a very young nick kroll uh and like oh yeah it's just funny yeah all those folks came through there at least uh some of them like got their start there yeah well as the comedy writer and former zeitgeist guest max silvestri put it now you see me now you don't that that rules well done uh yeah exactly what a eulogy powerful all right guys that is going to do it for this fine Tuesday. We hope you are doing well out there. Stand safe. Be kind to
Starting point is 00:13:27 each other. Have a great night. And we will be back tomorrow with a whole episode of The Daily Zeitgeist. We'll talk to you then. Bye. Bye.
