Starting point is 00:01:43 As the U.S. elections approach, it can feel like we're angrier and more divided than ever. But in a new, hopeful season of my podcast, I'll share what the science really shows, that we're surprisingly more united than most people think. We all know something is wrong in our culture, in our politics, and that we need to do better and that we can do better. Listen on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you listen to podcasts. Hello, the internet, and welcome to the Trend Lease Act. That is courtesy of Johnny Davis.
Starting point is 00:02:17 It is a play on the Lend Lease Act, which I was just telling Miles was a World War II piece of legislation that allowed us to... He doesn't know much about World War II, it turns out. Nope. I know everything. The reason we're laughing is we... This is our second time through this. I had my mic aimed at the floor uh but we only got to this part explained it to
Starting point is 00:02:46 me yeah and uh so he knows a lot about world war ii very little about how microphones work miles damn yeah you got me anyway let's talk about the trends let's talk about let's talk about this guy, Obama. I guess Obama endorsed Biden. Thanks, Obama. Thanks. Thanks a lot, Obama. I mean. Yeah, so he endorsed Joe Biden. Least surprising news.
Starting point is 00:03:16 It just seems like everything's lining up. The Dems are lining up all in the same direction. Bernie yesterday, Obama today. Who's tomorrow? What's next? What's next ken griffey jr oh kent griffey jr would be tight that would actually be dope as fuck i just i don't know why i'm like you know what dude all right all right griff let me know let me know big announcement coming big announcement coming guys it's actually ken griffey jr uh the big unit randy johnson oh wow and the big hurt frank thomas
Starting point is 00:03:49 yeah all the all in together we need them together uh i don't yeah i think i don't have this whole thing literally anything to think about this to say about this no aside from of course that is going to happen and i think the one thing thing I've read that I hope they really think about is who Biden's running mate will be to try and energize people. Because with just Joe Biden on that ticket, it's not getting many people excited, at least to volunteer for him. I'm sure people will come out and force to vote against Trump. But I think having a woman of color as his running mate would be a pretty smart move. I think they've been doing a lot of polling saying
Starting point is 00:04:30 that that would likely yield good results, especially in battleground states, to turn out as many people as possible. Who are we thinking about? Kamala Harris? I don't know.
Starting point is 00:04:39 Whoever it is. I mean, I think at this point, between that and just thinking of that people in Wisconsin were made to vote in a pandemic and then even trying to fathom what a general election could look like in november i'm just like i don't know dude thank you sure please yeah the i mean the the wisconsin vote ended up going in the democrats favor right it was more uh successful for the the liberal candidates on the wisconsin ballot well yeah and they also you know credit to them they were able to oust uh conservative
Starting point is 00:05:10 supreme court justice in their state supreme court um with the liberal challenger um which i don't think has happened in that state since the 60s so there was one silver lining i think because at the end of the day of many people in wisconsin had to go vote that day because the supreme court was saying yeah yeah how about you know take your lives into your own hands as you exercise your your right as a u.s citizen anyways it'll be interesting to see who biden uh picks his running mate it'll be interesting to see uh how things progress in this quarantine you know it'll also be interesting to see how Trump gets way more militant about keeping everybody safe at home, distancing from one another when it comes time to vote him out of office.
Starting point is 00:05:57 If you need any indicator of how desperate he is, he's thinking of just eliminating the post office as a way to prevent mail-in voting. So it's like, okay, well, what if I end electricity? Then there's no electronic voting machines. He's eliminating the post office because it's a failure. It's a failure. Losing business, even though they don't get a cent of our money.
Starting point is 00:06:23 Tornado is trending. a cent of our money um tornado is trending uh this is uh horrifying at least 33 people were killed after tornadoes uh ripped through the south on easter sunday and continued uh over the ensuing uh hours and days uh yeah it's yeah this is i mean i i don't know that this had any impact but it is something that we were talking about in the run-up to tornado season is the fact that there are fewer planes in the air uh means worse meteorological forecasts because uh commercial flights actually gave a lot of data back to meteorologists. But that wasn't like their reason that there was any... There's no story about the time of the response
Starting point is 00:07:14 or when they were able to predict the tornado, right? I don't know. Oh, just as an aside? I just think it's... Yeah, as an aside, that's interesting. And they were saying specifically they were worried about that having some impact during tornado season so right i don't i don't know that this is that impact but it is interesting to think about well i think the other part of it is this that like when you already are dealing with on a pandemic and on top of it people needing
Starting point is 00:07:43 medical assistance and how first responders react and move in an environment like that i mean that's those are the layers of like a response that you just don't want added on top of an already really difficult situation so i yeah thoughts with all of those people dealing with that across i mean how many states like just the entire like what almost like the entire southeast right yeah it was really bad yeah layering is uh is not good when it comes to things like this to to disasters so yeah hopefully people are you know helping helping each other out helping themselves out and staying safe but right kardashians are tweeting a momentous event on from
Starting point is 00:08:27 the world of keeping up with the kardashians i guess actually not because this happens like every episode but kim and courtney fought each other a while back like what feels like years ago but it was in the okay yeah it's been like the launch point for like an absolute gem of quarantine art of this one man at Aunt Emilia. It was my favorite tweet. Basically, a one-man performance of the fight between Kourtney Kardashian and Kim Kardashian that ends in fisticuffs
Starting point is 00:09:02 and aggressive white lady nail digging uh it's just like i don't know i think half of the fun now of seeing the content come out of this quarantine is just how the thing the the pieces i love so much are the ones people doing like low the most lo-fi stuff but so clever so like in this video it's just one guy and he's somehow doing all the punch-ins like in a reality show because he's taking the time to edit it he's using an ironing board as a stand-in when two people need to be in the frame it's like the ones i see where people have been doing the fake airplane shot out the window or fake helicopter tour have you seen those videos like where someone would just project like okay so there's this video
Starting point is 00:09:45 where this dude projects it looks like a guy in a helicopter and he's like looking out of a helicopter window like going around manhattan or some city and then like as you zoom out you realize the framing you're seeing of the window was him just holding a step stool over his head and you were looking through like the legs of the step stool that were creating like the frame of a window and he was wearing like aviator sunglasses and he was just wearing like a gaming headset and they go even wider he's just projecting a video that someone shot out of a helicopter on youtube it's just like and it's like i'm sorry it this is all i have that's great content that's what we need courtney really seems to get the the brunt of it i feel like.
Starting point is 00:10:25 I don't know if this is something that our listeners give a shit about, but Courtney seems to... What do you think? She picked a great father for her children in Scott Disick, I'll tell you that much. That much is true. That guy is the most horrific piece of shit I think I've ever seen. Do you think she's still kind of suffering the ramifications of that
Starting point is 00:10:48 from her sisters just being like, you fool? For me to answer that would presuppose that I have any modicum of knowledge of the Kardashians outside of where they are and where they grew up. What are your Kardashian watchers telling you, Miles? Let me tell you. Okay, I've got my ear to this the hills of brentwood or where did uh holmby hills i have my ears to the streets of holmby hills uh where they grew up and let me tell you the saint martin of tours crowd they're they're abuzz with some rumors
Starting point is 00:11:16 um and finally fang f-a-a-n-g is trending. We had talked before about GAFA, which is Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon. Netflix has now been added, and it is now Fang, because Netflix is one of the big boys now. Their stock went up 22.6 percent so far this year while everybody else's is going way down wait how do you what what's the parameters to get into this club like what's the like you got to be like a trillion dollar company you're saying i don't think there's any like official thing other than that they are like world beating tech companies that are too big for the good of our existence our online and like digital existence um but this is this is one of
Starting point is 00:12:17 the first times i think this has probably been happening for a while but i i hadn't realized that it had been in the world of business like Like Netflix had been kind of coronated into that, into that world. Yeah. I mean, I know like even just today specifically, their stock went up 5% just today. Jesus.
Starting point is 00:12:37 Yeah. And that's ahead of the earnings. So who knows? Yeah. I don't know what that means. I, it sounds like if it's what you say it is, I love it. But I haven't just loosely just the way we do the show.
Starting point is 00:12:50 I'm going to say it's probably something to do with people staying home. Huh. I don't know. I'm no Jim Cramer, but that's my two yen. Don't sell yourself short, man. That's just my two yen from over here, bro. Back to you. All right.
Starting point is 00:13:03 Well, guys, that has been today's episode we hope you guys are staying home staying safe uh washing your hands being kind to each other have a good afternoon we will be back tomorrow with a whole episode of this podcast and we'll talk to you guys then.
