Starting point is 00:01:04 Up first, I explore the making of a rivalry. Kaitlyn Clark versus Angel Reese. Every great player needs a foil. I know I'll go down in history. People are talking about women's basketball just because of one single game. Clark and Reese have changed the way we consume women's sports. Listen to the making of a rivalry. Kaitlyn Clark versus Angel Reese on the iHeart on the iheart radio app apple podcast or wherever you
Starting point is 00:01:25 get your podcast presented by capital one founding partner of iheart women's sports hello the internet and welcome to this episode of trender to bernstein or bernstein no i think i think we got to trust michael stipe on this trust trust and we don't say einstein no you don't trend art bernstein is trending it is a trending oh i'm jack that's miles yes um this is one of the last things from air 300th season of the daily zeitgeist congratulations miles we really we really fucking did it man 300 man we can finally put the mic down. We're just going to do a slow clap for the next couple minutes, if everybody's okay with that.
Starting point is 00:02:13 Who do you think of when you think of a slow clap? I don't know. I feel like it became such a... Obviously, I don't know. I can't remember what specific film that became a trope from, so I don't really ever think of it being specific as to just a bit that you do. I think it was Charles Dutton in Rudy. Do you remember that one?
Starting point is 00:02:32 Because it's weird, because it never picks up, really. It's like five slow claps. Charles S. Dutton. Charles S. Dutton. Let's fully respect the name. Sorry, Charlie. A.K.A. Rock, if you were up late on Sunday nights on Fox. Did you watch Rock? I did. Yeah, because I was Rock, if you were up late on Sunday nights on Fox. Oh, man.
Starting point is 00:02:45 Did you watch Rock? I did. Yeah, because I was like, if you were fucking with a living color. Yeah. Yeah. Good shows. Good shows. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:02:54 I haven't seen it now. I don't know if it aged well. But hey, I have just splendid memories. It's funny how my dad would be like, we're not watching Married with Children. We watch Rock and the Living Color. But then he felt like Married with Children was just too much. But he's rock and the living color because, but then, but then he felt like a living or married with children was just too much, but he's like,
Starting point is 00:03:09 but it live in color though. That's black people. So it's okay. It was kind of like, I was definitely part of that, uh, in living color, the rock block. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:03:17 The rock. Uh, all right. Well, miles. Yeah. Um, Netflix released the trailer for Maestro.
Starting point is 00:03:26 All right. Starring Bradley Cooper from the director, Bradley Cooper, from the makeup department. A controversial prosthetic nose. Yes. Yes. It's a lot of people quoting Sarah Silverman with a coin. She phrased me like, why are there non-Jewish people always playing Jewish people? And then you're putting on comically looking prosthetics on their face
Starting point is 00:03:51 to make them look more Jewish, quote unquote. Prosthetics aside, I watched the trailer. Miles, I want you to guess the number that I'm thinking of right now. And it's fuck off. That's a joke we would never do that because that's the most boring thing i can think of anyone doing in to witness anybody two people trying to guess the number the other one is thinking of it's so min it's so minimal in its presentation that it feels like an act of violence on the viewer because i'm not joking out of visceral i i don't get upset a lot when i look at like new trailers or whatever but there's
Starting point is 00:04:35 something so unlikable about these characters as portrayed by these two in it like from the like sort of like north atlantic sort of twang and like rhythm of speaking darling i'm thinking of two darling a pair like the two of us ducks in a pond ducks in a pond what's the movie about i have no fucking clue aside from we see him get older and i get it love story in the background of music uh that's really bradley cooper's uh sweet spot it's kind of where where he eats is uh in the in the intersection of love and romance and music well i don't know if you remember a little film called a star is born oh i do and that one i'll get behind whenever someone's portrayed as being
Starting point is 00:05:26 blacked out on benzos at the grammys and pissing themselves i'm like see i can relate to this on some level even though i've not been to the grammys but this i'm sure people are gonna like into the grammys just that just that dimension but like looking at this you can just tell this feels like you know brian was saying it too before i just tell this feels like, you know, Brian was saying it too, before we recorded, it feels like one of those laser guided made movies to just activate the voting body of the Academy.
Starting point is 00:05:53 Cause will it work? Miles is the question. JM. Our other, our writer points out, you got a good chance with a prosthetic nose. If you're trying to go for an Oscar. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:06:04 You know, it worked for Robert De Niro. Yeah. Nicole Kidman, The Hours. You know what I mean? That's not what her nose looks like. Wait a second. She's really trying to be that character or else she wouldn't put the nose on. She looks kind of uglier than usual.
Starting point is 00:06:21 Yeah. So a lot of people. Yeah. Again, Charlize Theron and Monster. Oh, yeah. Charlize. Yeah. I mean, of people, yeah, again, Charlize Theron and Monster. Oh, yeah, Charlize, yeah. I mean, that was more than a nose, though. Charlize went all in for that one. Yeah. All that to say is, like, you know, like, now a lot
Starting point is 00:06:33 of people are like, this just feels weird. Like, couldn't he have just not had the nose just, like, in the revival of violent anti-Semitism right now in society? Like, what are we doing? Again, whatever. That's his choice. His, like, Leonard Bernstein's kids are like, we're fine with it. like violent anti-semitism right now in society like this what are we doing again whatever that's his choice is his like leonard bernstein's kids are like we're fine with it so y'all need to fall we're good over here he had a big nose okay yeah aka please don't fuck up our bag by boycotting
Starting point is 00:06:58 this film because we signed the rights over to you must come watch my competition mom um it's your bugsy sequel yeah i don't know why why it went in that direction probably because i'm bad at doing accents but it's it's interesting um it's weird like this seems related to tar in a way that is probably not beneficial to this movie right you know like tar is this like really funny like post-modern cultural look at like a fictional compote like a fictional leonard bernstein character um and but like it really i don't know i can't then see someone coming back and making uh just straight down the middle straight face leonard bernstein biopic and being like and we're good here and who we all saw that one and this one and we think they're both neat but maybe at least like A Star is Born
Starting point is 00:08:05 had Lady Gaga you get the appeal of that as a film right yeah I do not understand the appeal of talking about Leonard Bernstein I don't think it's going to be a hit I don't think it's going to be a hit they're trying I mean you know his head was in the right places like you know he was you know for
Starting point is 00:08:21 like civil rights and shit and like anti-nuclear proliferation type stuff but like at the end of the day again then this is my own personal thing i'm like i can i'd rather see something like george gershwin like i just because from the musical standpoint i'm not a fan of west side story or like some of the other stuff bernstein's done but whatever just even then i don't even know if i'd see a george gershwin movie because i'm like what the fuck are we doing yeah is this unless the story's so mind-blowing that you're like you didn't know man like what this guy was trying to do the whole time behind the scenes this just feels like a very seems like it's like a successful relationship like
Starting point is 00:09:00 a successful marriage the story of a marriage that is like good which i don't know that maybe maybe i'm overestimating um the uh i do think i will say bradley cooper's performance in the original star is born was very good right i thought it was like one of the under talked about things from that movie was how good his performance was i mean i get like you know and brian just pulled up a stat he said there's over at least 10 oscar wins for wearing fake nose and if you look at my man b coops fucking win loss if you look at the box score real quick about oscar noms yeah they don't like him they don't like him i mean sir you are taking elder barge after elder barge and i don't know what you're gonna do so i get why you're now gonna be like no fuck it man give me the nose
Starting point is 00:09:51 we're doing it he was sitting at home during when the oscar nominations were announced and he just said give me a fucking nose give me the fucking note like yeah you just see him break a glass fucking panel and just pull it out and he's like calls his agent he's like i'm in i already have the nose on can you tell i already have the nose on oh yourself hurricane hillary is on a path towards southern california uh not much to say other than stay safe out there folks she fundraising wait that's a real thing yeah when was the last time we had a motherfucking hurricane been a while it looks like we're getting we're in for rain on sunday saturday and Sunday, maybe. Wow. Hold on to your butts. Because Southern California
Starting point is 00:10:47 doesn't know how to act when it rains. I mean, it's truly like, I mean, we get adverse weather, but like a hurricane getting to Southern California. Hey folks, here we are. You know, at the crossroads again, where we'll just
Starting point is 00:11:04 continue to see things that i've not seen in recent memory so wow all right hill uh be gentle um and a new harrison ford snake just dropped a new species of snake was just discovered in peru one of his ex-wives guys welcome to the misogyny Radio Hour with your wonderful host. I write all my own jokes based on my own pain I have not resolved from my personal relationships. Wait, so he has a fucking snake named after him? Apparently he's very, very common. Like there are spiders named after him.
Starting point is 00:11:38 There's now, I think, multiple snakes named after him. I mean, I get the snake thing because indiana jones you know right indiana jones scared of snakes yeah indiana jones not scared of spiders particularly but there's some scary spiders in in indiana jones it's the spiders called the calidole harrison ford eye oh wow okay cool i was there uh you i know this is one of your favorite movies was there a spider scene in hollywood homicide that we're forgetting about that would maybe explain uh is that with josh hartnett yeah uh yeah yeah yeah yeah there is yeah okay that makes bunch of them there's even an ant and then there's this like quote from harrison ford that is going viral it's just
Starting point is 00:12:31 it's always fun to like relearn and you know we if you pay a lot of attention to harrison ford you kind of relearn it every every time you see something about him that he's just like an old stoner um yeah who likes to crash planes yeah so there's this quote these scientists keep naming critters after me it's always the ones that terrify children i don't understand spend my free time cross-stitching the single lullabies to my basil plants so they won't fear the night oh my god so they won't fear the night yes that is fucking that are you sure that's not like a onion like fake quote you know what i mean it's so spot on like that like it blows my mind where he's like, I sing lullabies to my basil plants so they won't fear the night. Yes. I have only seen that quote shared by people saying, I thought this was a click hole or onion quote.
Starting point is 00:13:37 It does not exist outside of somebody sharing it with that sentiment. Right. Wow. Anyways, he is. My he is don't fear the night we basil plants it will only last for but a moment and the sun will show its face and you will bask in its warming glow once again okay my little baesies i love how freaked out he was by david blaine that that viral video it's very endearing which one's that he like david blaine does a magic trick for him in his kitchen and then he just like looks at him and goes get the fuck out of my house that's right that makes sense now like he's a sensitive man he's sensitive and very high very very high very sensitive yeah good for you all right let's take a quick break we'll be right back
Starting point is 00:14:32 i'm jess casavetto executive producer of the hit netflix documentary series dancing for the devil the 7m tiktok cult and i'm cleo gray former member of 7M Films and Shekinah Church. And we're the host of the new podcast, Forgive Me For I Have Followed. Starting point is 00:15:18 and extremely necessary perspectives. Forgive Me For I Have Followed will be more than an exploration. It's a vital revelation aimed at ensuring these types of abuses never happen again. Listen to Forgive Me For I Have Followed on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, I'm Gianna Pradente. And I'm Jemay Jackson-Gadsden. We're the hosts of Let's Talk Offline, a new podcast from LinkedIn News and iHeart Podcasts. When you're just starting out in your career, you have a lot of questions like, how do I speak up when I'm feeling overwhelmed? Or can I negotiate a higher

And if we don't know the answer, we bring in experts who do, like resume specialist Morgan Saner. The only difference between the person who doesn't get the job and the person who gets the job

Yeah, rejection is scary, but it's better than you rejecting yourself. Together, we'll share what it really takes to thrive in the early years of your career
Starting point is 00:16:29 without sacrificing your sanity or sleep. Listen to Let's Talk Offline on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. How do you feel about biscuits? Hi, I'm Akilah Hughes, and I'm so excited about my new podcast, Rebel Spirit, where I head back to my hometown in Kentucky and try to convince my high school to change their racist mascot, the Rebels, into something everyone in the South loves, the biscuits.
Starting point is 00:16:56 I was a lady rebel. Like, what does that even mean? The Boone County Rebels will stay the Boone County Rebels with the image of the biscuits. It's right here in black and white in the prints. A lion. An individual that came to the school saying that God sent him to talk to me about the mascot switch is a leader.
Starting point is 00:17:14 You choose hills that you want to die on. Why would we want to be the losing team? I just take all the other stuff out of it. Segregation academies. When civil rights said that we need to integrate public schools these charter schools were exempt from that bigger than a flag or mascot you have to be ready for serious backlash listen to rebel spirit on the iheart radio app apple podcasts or wherever you and we're back we are and um not too much new from the trump legal conflagration uh we we do
Starting point is 00:17:57 now have more information about how exactly he's going to pay for all of this and it is through campaign donation money yeah yep yep yep yep that's which i guess is legal yeah it's not like ethically okay but um yeah i mean i think i mean that's yeah that's they they clearly know how to sidestep the fec regulations and they're like yeah yeah it's more like that it's never been done before that's why we're always like with him we're like i know we would like no normal person would do that but there isn't an actual law on the books that prevents it so okay yeah yeah anyways it's it's a lot of money you know and when you look at again like the stories of how uh giuliani apparently like went to mar-a-lago twice being like i need money and basically it
Starting point is 00:18:53 was like yeah whatever we'll see what happens get this fucking loser out of here didn't give like a specific amount or when he would help and like i think and Giuliani, his lawyer, were like, it will help you a lot if you help him. You know what I mean? Because this motherfucker is shook. Which I love to read. How scared Rudy Giuliani has been this last week. Just terrified.
Starting point is 00:19:19 Yeah. I mean, our campaign finance laws at this point make running for president just a great tax dodge. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Just put on my super pack and just shield myself from any liability there. Yeah. All right.
Starting point is 00:19:37 Barbie is now Warner Brothers' top domestic film of all time, which is pretty crazy. What did that overtake? The Dark Knight. Oh, wow. How apropos. Yeah. Taking over Nolan's spot. And they think it'll probably overtake
Starting point is 00:19:54 the last Harry Potter movie for global box office pretty soon because it's still performing really strong. Oh, yeah. I was looking to maybe go see the ninja turtles movie over the week like last weekend and i just remember just just to see what ticket availability looked like for barbie and i was surprised how like not like fully packed out but you're like oh no people are fucking going we're still doing it because i know people who have triple dipped at this at this point. Wow. Yeah. Yeah. For the vibe.
Starting point is 00:20:25 It's a monster hit, not a sequel, so I don't know. Yeah. I don't know. Maybe we'll see them taking more swings. Are they going to make a fucking franchise out of this? Mm-mm. They're not, right? That's what they're saying now.
Starting point is 00:20:42 It's one and done. Well, that's what maybe Greta Gerwig is saying. Yeah. But will Warner Brothers and the fucking goblins in the c-suite who are just looking at more money and be like ring it out for one more go yeah and then there's uh there's a story about the director of sound of freedman free sound of freedom who is uh not capturing the freedmans the sound of freedom to that documentary oh yeah which is also about uh child sexual abuse but yeah uh so this one the director has like come through and been like guys like this is not fair to me why why first of? First of all, I'm not going to get a dollar
Starting point is 00:21:25 from this thing being a hit. Second of all, all of this negative press has made me feel sick to my stomach. Honey. And when you hear the origins of this film,
Starting point is 00:21:40 that should clear any misconceptions up that you might have. Oh, okay. Great. you're not actually going to listen to the origins of the film are you because it actually doesn't clear anything oh yo you really want me to stick around and tell you the origins shit yeah okay uh so work on the movie began back in 2015 okay before q anon was even a thing. Okay, I'll give you that. I got the idea from a TV news segment, and I wrote a script about human trafficking
Starting point is 00:22:09 that was purely fictionalized. Okay. And then the film's producers met with Tim Ballard, and the movie changed into a supposedly true story about Ballard's exploits. So I let him use my script for be a true story about this guy who's like super problematic and probably lying about everything um you just glazed over that whole part so what oh you're listening that part um it was before q anon dude we got there first
Starting point is 00:22:39 if anything i gave q anon the idea but that's not the final product. The thing that you originally ideated in 2015 is not actually the final product. So that's actually out of my hands at that point. All I could do was then direct the film. Dude, it's such a disingenuous defense. Yeah. To be like, I had the idea before Q q anon although in the development process it very yeah it got taken over by people of that mindset so you let them take a fictional movie and claim that it was non-fiction and then you directed it well it's not like you are the person whose ip was
Starting point is 00:23:20 like purchased and then like taken away from you you directed it right yeah you were there you yeah presumably you had a the ability to you know make some decisions there but hey yeah you know it just sucks because like that guy's basically kind of like on the q anon thing and also the guy we fucking cast in it is just screaming about it non-stop so yeah so this guy so this is his second film right his first movie was a film called bella that uh was actually pretty successful at like certain film festivals starring his now that movie okay some people claim it was an anti-abortion drama and did this director recruit faith-based communities to support
Starting point is 00:24:06 that film also? Yes. But it was not anti-abortion. Did he go and visit George W. Bush and Laura Bush at the White House because they were a fan of the anti-abortion message? Yes. But that doesn't mean QAnon stuff. Did they
Starting point is 00:24:23 use marketing practices that are in line with a cult where you would have to give your email address to interns who would then follow up with you and harass you to make sure that you brought people to see the movie? Yes. Remember your commitments. Gotta remember your commitment. Huh? Yeah. You remember?
Starting point is 00:24:43 Do you remember? You said you're gonna support bella that you said that you understood it was the most important movie in the world to help us and wait so you're not an abortion you're not a liar right because when i met you i didn't you didn't strike me as someone who lies or is disingenuous you seem to have someone who's very concerned about what's happening in america with abortion this poor guy just keeps accidentally backing his way into having movies that are hit because they get supported by right-wing hate mongers yeah and i feel sorry for him i really do and again it's gonna be so hard i was just looking in variety and seeing the next thing he's working on written house i just feel like people are gonna again
Starting point is 00:25:23 paint him with this brush that he's glorifying right-wing violence just really unfair shout out his wife ali landry from the doritos commercials though wait what his wife is ali landry no the filmmaker yeah yeah that guy that guy she was in bella she was bella whoa and i know she's she became like a right wing person right yeah or she's not bella she's celia in the movie but anyway she's in the film but yeah i don't know if she's out right outwardly right but anyway i'm like the doritos like oh wow look at you came up and she used to be with mario lopez before she got her marriage annulled and then hooked up with this dude like two years later.
Starting point is 00:26:05 All right. Well, there you go. That's what I bring to this story. All right. Well, those are some of the things that are trending on this Thursday, August 17th. We're back tomorrow with a whole last episode of the show. Until then, be kind to each other. Be kind to yourselves.
Starting point is 00:26:20 Get the vaccine. Don't do nothing about white supremacy. We will talk to you all tomorrow. Bye. Bye. Bye. There's a lot to figure out when you're just starting your career. That's where we come in. Think of us as your work besties you can turn to for advice.
Starting point is 00:26:49 And if we don't know the answer, we bring in people who do, like negotiation expert Maury Tahiripour.
