Starting point is 00:00:00 Hello, the internet, and welcome to this first episode of Trending Zeitgeist, or TDC Trends. Yeah, it's a working title. Working title. Look, this is what we do. Title TK. Exactly. Or Trending Zeitgeist, Daily Zeitgeist Trending. We're open to, you know, options, too.
Starting point is 00:00:17 My name is Jack O'Brien. This is Miles Gray. No, this is Miles Gray. That is Miles Gray. Yes, thank you. My bad. I just... We don't want to confuse our listeners. I want to be you.
Starting point is 00:00:29 Thank you. Is that weird? No, whatever. People are getting a slice of real life in this one. Yeah, so we just wanted to check in with you guys in the afternoon, tell you about some things that are trending right now. Yeah, in this moment. In this moment, and see if you guys find it useful, if you enjoy it, and if so, we'll
Starting point is 00:00:48 kind of keep putting it out there. Yeah, if you think it's useful, toss us a couple bucks. Hey! Putting my hat out. Also, I think it's just important because the news changes so much. So much. We're like, what if we already talk about stuff after we record the show? What if we just recorded some of that too
Starting point is 00:01:05 and then gave y'all another opportunity for us to annoy the shit out of you? This is what we're talking about in our office anyways. Might as well talk about it with you. I guess the theme is that we'll always obviously do our regular show and then sometimes we'll look at things that are just trending hard on Google or Twitter, things that might not quite make the show but still worth talking about because Earth is talking about it. Yes. So without further ado, I think we're just going to hit you with four quick topics off the record.
Starting point is 00:01:33 Crickins. Yeah. So up first, Disney Plus is trending, Miles. Yes. Because they launched. Yep. And immediately had some crashing. Streaming issues.
Starting point is 00:01:44 Streaming issues. Streaming issues. People are unhappy that The Simpsons is being cropped at 16.9. Aspect ratio versus 4.3, the old nearly square TV size we grew up on. Right. Because The Simpsons crams jokes into every single corner of the frame. So, yeah, by cropping that square to fit the rectangle that is 16.9, a lot of people are like, you're losing jokes
Starting point is 00:02:09 that are part of the establishing shots or just things in the corners or up above or below the R.I. line. So I get it. But the Mandalorian dropped, right? Yeah, and I still don't have Disney Plus. I need to do that because that is one of the things
Starting point is 00:02:23 I really want it for. And also knowing that all the Simpsons are there, plus Doug from the Disney era. There's a lot of nostalgia in there. Yeah, yeah. But I guess it could be dangerous. I could fully just regress in front of it, watching it and be like, I'm just eating Gushers and not brushing my teeth. It definitely feels like something that I will want to eat copious bowls of sugar cereal. Yeah, and like wear a blanket over me.
Starting point is 00:02:49 Number two is DACA. DACA is trending on Twitter. The Supreme Court is deliberating on this. Yeah. Seems to be sharply split. And there are some early indications based on some of the questions and comments that Chief Justice Roberts made and asked that they may be ruling in favor of the Trump administration. Yeah, it's yeah, definitely a 4-4, you know, conservative, liberal justices. Roberts, not looking too great.
Starting point is 00:03:22 But, you know, this this the decision won't come down to like may or june right um so we won't know until then um but you know i i think it's it's clearly going to be a huge issue on the campaign right um because at that point i mean we're talking like what we're nearly into the conventions and things like that so yeah I think this is what this does say is DACA will become a probably a big, big talking point during the upcoming election. And then something that's sort of related and also trending is a guy by the name of Stephen Miller. Have you heard about this guy?
Starting point is 00:03:56 You seen this guy? I seen this guy. So he is the president's kind of foreign policy or started out as a foreign policy advisor. He's baby Hitler in the White House dictating our immigration policies. Mostly famous for being his white supremacist policies. And some emails have leaked that he sent to Breitbart during the 2016 campaign. Yeah, even for that. Yeah. I mean, I guess the surprising thing is how unsurprising it is that somebody this close to the president is openly racist. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:35 When you think that he was cutting his teeth as an aid to Jeff Sessions, right. When he was in the Senate, like, yeah, we get, you have a very, a very unique world,
Starting point is 00:04:43 very unique worldview as my voice cracked. Yes. No, leave that, Dan. We have to be transparent. They must know what we sound like. How weak my voice is without cold brew. I will not let, I will not obscure the truth for y'all. But yeah, he is seen in these emails linking off to a white supremacist, white nationalist
Starting point is 00:05:03 site. linking off to a white supremacist, white nationalist site. He links off to The Camp of Saints, which is a book you probably aren't familiar with, but it's basically a work of propaganda that's all about- Nativist porn. Yes. Where the brown skins come to white world and literally eat their own shit. Yes.
Starting point is 00:05:23 Where people are like, you see see this is why man we can we got to save european culture right it's a they basically make you know how they're always talking about white genocide and that just means interracial couples right well this they create a white genocide well and this is where it was interesting you say you know sending links off to a white nationalist website and that is Breitbart, pretty much. But this is like a neo-Nazi editor. Yeah, ones where they're full on, like, we love white nationalism. But in one of the emails, right, talking about the Camp of Saints, he was going back and forth with one of the editors there
Starting point is 00:06:00 and basically saying, quote, you see the Pope saying the West must, in effect, get rid of borders. Someone should point out the parallels to Camp of the Saints. And then right after that, Breitbart put out an article comparing just that. Interesting. So that's sort of, you know, he was doing a little white supremacist whispering. And it's probably a pretty good approximation of what it's like to be the president and have this guy in your ear all the time just kind of whispering uh in parcel tongue he's got a hateful message he's gotta freak trump out oh no way you don't think so oh okay yeah i
Starting point is 00:06:39 see i see where you're coming from because he still looks obsessed. Right. Look at this guy. He's weak. He's pale. He's balding. He looks a lot like that dude from Big Bang Theory, but like if that dude was being consumed from the inside. Which one? Jim Parsons, right? Isn't that the dude's name? I don't know that show very well.
Starting point is 00:06:59 That's Bazinga, right? Bazinga, yeah. Is Bazinga a brand within the show or just a saying? I think it's just a thing that he says and that I now say constantly around the office. Yeah. And you say it at the worst times. Yes, exactly. Really inappropriate times. Well, white nationalism, as I always say, Bazinga. Bazinga to that. And what's the fourth story, Miles? The fourth story that everyone's talking about is Christian Serratos, who is the woman who is going to be playing Selena
Starting point is 00:07:25 in the upcoming Netflix series, Selena the Series. Very clever title, I will say. Kudos to Netflix on that. But the images of her, wow. As somebody growing up in LA, I think anybody who knew Selena's music, you were a fan, and maybe you were introduced to the j-lo version this looks really good right uh i am just in terms of how much she looks like her yes i mean she looks i mean there was that all eyes on me movie uh about tupac where everybody was like whoa they found a guy who looks exactly like tupac and then it turns out yeah it turns out they just found a guy who looked exactly like Tupac and then the movie followed without the well you know he was cast because he was a meme first right that it started off being like yo this dude looks like Tupac people were like I know where
Starting point is 00:08:14 Tupac is yeah and then they're like let's get that guy to take a bunch of acting this is I interviewed him when that film came out and he was saying they put him through all kinds of like acting classes, Shakespearean acting classes because he was starting from zero. Yeah. If you put me in a feature film, I wouldn't know how to do you think you, you think you could be saved with like going to like the Shakespeare theater and like getting a crash course from our greatest thespians?
Starting point is 00:08:41 No, no, no, I cannot. You've seen me unable when a camera comes around. I don No, I cannot. You've seen me unable, when a camera comes around, I can't figure out what to do with my hands. Imagine that in a feature film.
Starting point is 00:08:53 Playing someone so dramatic. Just in the background, me as Tupac, just holding my hands in the air in front of me. I mean, that would already be problematic. And Jack O'Brien as Tupac. And Miles as Madonna. Who would you play in a movie?
Starting point is 00:09:06 Who would I play? Regardless of your actual acting ability, who's someone, even as a kid, you're like, I'm that guy. Fictional or non-fictional? Either one. Matt Dillon. Matt Dillon?
Starting point is 00:09:19 The Matt Dillon story. Was that a movie? Or you just want to tell the Matt Dillon story? I just was told that I looked like Matt Dillon story. Was that a movie? No. Or you just want to tell the Matt Dillon story? I just was told that I looked like Matt Dillon one time when I tried to dress up as Magnum P.I. for Halloween, and it ended up I looked like Pat Healy from- Something About Mary? Something About Mary. Oh, boy.
Starting point is 00:09:37 I give off the pervy Matt Dillon vibes. Oh, because you had the mustache? Yeah. You've had a lot of mustaches. I have. None of which I've never seen. Yeah. Like in person, and it sounds like for the mustache? Yeah. You've had a lot of mustaches. I have. None of which I've never seen. Yeah. Like in person, and it sounds like for good reason.
Starting point is 00:09:48 Yeah. No, those days are long behind me. Yeah. I'll take no more handlebars. No more handlebars? Yeah. Okay. I'm not trying to.
Starting point is 00:09:55 Maybe we can start a petition on Twitter for Jack to bring back the handlebar. Oof. It was a look. Bring back the handlebar. Yeah. I just don't know if I want people like worried about my children when I'm walking around
Starting point is 00:10:09 I looked very strange especially if you're running with a stroller like if you were jogging with your stroller exercising catch that man he fucking stole that baby it's a fine line alright well that's what this is going to be
Starting point is 00:10:25 we hope you enjoyed it we hope you learned something about what people are thinking about and talking about at this very moment in the Zeitgeist
Starting point is 00:10:32 and we'll be back tomorrow with more podcasts and even more after that the saga continues
