Starting point is 00:00:00 In California during the summer of 1975, within the span of 17 days and less than 90 miles, two women did something no other woman had done before, try to assassinate the President of the United States. One was the protege of Charles Manson. 26-year-old Lynette Fromm, nickname Squeaky. The other, a middle-aged housewife working undercover for the FBI. Identified by police as Sarah Jean Moore. The story of one strange and violent summer, this season on the new podcast, Rip Current. K hasn't heard from her sister in seven years.
Starting point is 00:00:41 I have a proposal for you. Come up here and document my project. All you need to do is record everything like you always do. What was that? That was live audio of a woman's nightmare. Can Kay trust her sister or is history repeating itself?
Starting point is 00:00:55 There's nothing dangerous about what you're doing. They're just dreams. Dream Sequence is a new horror thriller from Blumhouse Television, iHeartRadio, and Realm. Listen to Dream Sequence on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hi, everyone. It's me, Katie Couric. You know, lately I've been overwhelmed by the whole wellness industry. So much information out there about flaxseed, pelvic floor, serums, and anti-aging.
Starting point is 00:01:23 So I launched a newsletter. It's called Body and Soul to share expert approved advice for your physical and mental health. And guess what? It's free. Just sign up at katiecouric.com slash body and soul. That's K-A-T-I-E-C-O-U-R-I-C.com slash body and soul. I promise it will make you happier and healthier. How do you feel about biscuits? Hi, I'm Akilah Hughes, and I'm so excited about my new podcast, Rebel Spirit, where I head back to my hometown in Kentucky
Starting point is 00:01:55 and try to convince my high school to change their racist mascot, the Rebels, into something everyone in the South loves, the biscuits. I was a lady rebel. Like, what does that even mean? It's right here in black and white in print. It's bigger than a flag or mascot. Listen to Rebel Spirit on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:02:17 Hello, the internet, and welcome to this episode of Trendle's Mother, or Trendle from Beowulf. Hmm. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I don't think I ever read Beowulf, but there's a Miles Gray classic. I had to for AP literature. Guess who just hit the spark notes?
Starting point is 00:02:39 Because I was like, nope. Spark those spark notes. No, seriously. That's exactly what's going on. But yes, shout out to Grendel. I'm jack you are miles yep i am let's tell the people what's trending katie couric is trending she just dropped her book on people uh and it is called going there um so. So you know it's going to be tone deaf. Right with a title like that? That's it.
Starting point is 00:03:11 I'm going there. She said, this is a direct quote. She said, I knew Matt loved beautiful women. He could charm the pants, parentheses, as it were, off any celebrity. She is, yeah. the pants parentheses as it were off any celebrity she is yeah she sure her her statement is basically like these gals should have just told matt to buzz off yeah seems like this whole thing sounds like she is looking at her career but cosplaying as a very confident white man who's a baby boomer looking back on their career based on some of these takes i mean it's bad when pierce morgan is condemning you he's saying like there's a special place in hell for like women who don't defend each other like
Starting point is 00:03:58 something just asinine like that my favorite feminist pierce morgan yeah please do go on pierce i mean please have you've handled the megan markel situation so splendidly we could we could really take a note from you so yeah it looks like a like i guess just a terrible look for katie couric yeah just a terrible look that she has it's just interesting when people like right you know they're like now i get to tell my story right harvey was pretty chill yeah she's i don't know what everyone else is going on about who knew roger ailes was a monster it's like literally every everybody that uh you work with just based off of that you should take away every fucking journalistic award she's ever received because you like you couldn't even compute that all right katie okay
Starting point is 00:04:45 her first husband who passed away from i think colon cancer and that's why she's like a big spokesperson for getting those checks uh those checkups yeah yeah uh she even like talking about him having some like small success as an on-air legal analyst uh she talks about finding herself silently admonishing him to stay in his lane um and she hates diane sawyer uh because she's everything i wasn't tall blonde with a creamy complexion her voice full of money her voice full of money yeah yo that's a fucking phrase i you know what i'm gonna take that katie i like that yeah that voice is full of money listen to it she also wonders why uh the the women who matt lauer abused didn't come to her instead of ann curry oh well I mean, I think you're caping for him all the time. It's strange.
Starting point is 00:05:54 Anyways, it seems like the review that I'm pulling these quotes from says like, don't buy this book. But don't buy it. But I don't know, maybe wait for your local library to get it. It does read like a very instructive case of, I don't know. It feels very American celebrity. Like she is unintentionally nailing what, what that sort of, what that very specific privilege looks like. You'll learn to hate Katie Couric like never before.
Starting point is 00:06:18 Oh, great. Okay. I guess that's the point of this. Learn to hate Katie. Facebook, IG, WhatsApp, all trending.
Starting point is 00:06:27 They're down. Probably not the reason they wanted. Keep them down. Yeah. So as they are struggling in the public perception realm for being evil, Facebook is now just gone down um yeah and people are wondering what happened uh you looked into the into the tech behind it a little bit yeah so a lot of people like what's going on is this some kind of fantastic gift uh and people are will i go to church uh this sunday to be like i believe now um but no essentially what happened was it looks like an engineer at
Starting point is 00:07:13 facebook fucked around with some of the routing meaning that like a lot of people like that means it's gone because people can't access it just means people can't access the website like so there's apparently there's going to they have like it's so bad that some work may have to be done like at the physical level like to fix their servers um so i don't know yeah let this let this fucking uh i don't know whatever you call this this uh temporary disabling of facebook long may it last yes um yeah i mean i just i went to facebook.com as i do all the time just straight up want to see what's going on on the front page of facebook and it is just can't be found like yes so just yeah i mean like as many
Starting point is 00:08:02 people want to rejoice because they can't get there it's just that the infrastructure for your computer to connect to their servers is just not there right now so they're they're having to do a little bit of work i feel bad for them i honestly i mean i think for all the people like whatsapp is probably the one where it's like that people actually use whatsapp all the time just for general communicating. That one, I'm like, that'd be hard to switch it up because data and stuff can be super expensive in some places. But yeah, a lot of people on Twitter are like, it's gone forever. It's like, no, no, no. God doesn't exist.
Starting point is 00:08:36 Because if God was real, it would be gone forever. You use WhatsApp? Oh, yeah. I talk to people abroad all the time. Do you ever use signal yeah i'll use signal if people have it but like i got you know there's like old japanese people in my life right you know we're using that or like line the line app uh for a lot of people in asia but yeah i mean i don't use it super frequently but that is typically internationally
Starting point is 00:09:01 like it's easier to just connect with someone through that yeah yeah all right ozzy media ozzy media let's talk about um we uh so this is a media company that's been around for a while um they they have like an impressive presentation like they're like we have this many uh reporters around the world. We have newsrooms everywhere, but they never really seemed to like, I didn't know anybody who like voluntarily read Aussie media, never, never heard of anyone reading it. Never heard of a story being broken by Aussie media. I mean, so we suspected.
Starting point is 00:09:47 Yeah, we had our, we had our suspicions we had our suspicions about this company very early on that's what was being told very fantastic things that hey man it's like millennial cnn i'm like really because i'm talking about every person they never heard um they thought we're talking about ozzy osbourne they really did what people suspected was that they were just kind of juicing their traffic through acquiring it and didn't really have an audience and it was just like sort of selling this idea so a few months ago one of the big like investment firms was talking to them about their next round of funding and they were like well so the thing that we want to make sure is uh that people actually like have watched one of your videos at least once like we just want to know uh so we're gonna we'd love to like have a
Starting point is 00:10:38 conversation with your contact at youtube and they're like oh great it's this person they're the head of uh youtube user experience we're gonna schedule this call uh so goldman sachs folks are on hold then the guy from youtube calls in to the zoom and is like hey sorry i'm having like some tech issues could would you guys mind if we just did this as a phone call and they're like okay yeah yeah so like we've all had those uh you know zoom calls where your internet's not working so they call in the uh youtube exec tells them like everything that they want to hear in order to uh make the investment but they notice at a couple points that the uh youtube executive's voice is doing a weird like electronic glitching thing yeah so on a hunch
Starting point is 00:11:26 the uh one of the goldman sachs guys like reaches out to the uh assistant of the youtube person they were supposed to be talking about and not the email that they got from this phone call like where they were in contact before they independently i independently have this person who knows that person so let me reach out and they get in touch with that person and they're like i've never talked to you before in my life man like i don't know yeah yeah we're just on that call for ozzy you just said how all the traffic was litty no no i've never talked to you i've never said that i wouldn't say that because nobody actually watches their videos uh and i know because i'm looking at this right now data report and they so it turns out like that carlos watson is the ceo of ozzy like reaches out to goldman sachs he's like i'm so embarrassed
Starting point is 00:12:19 sorry that was our coo who did that or like one of our like you know someone in the c-suite of our company who did yeah pretended to call pretended to be this guy he was having like a mental health thing and so okay so you're gonna fire him then we feel very proud that we're standing by him during this mental health thing we're gonna stand by you know because we're inclusive and that's uh how we get down uh so actually it's a reason. Not because you might not have potential leverage going the other way. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. We're actually just a great workplace.
Starting point is 00:12:53 Anyways, Goldman Sachs surprisingly chose not to invest, but they did make their next round of funding because that's how capitalism works. And some other bank that didn't ask to talk to YouTube they did make their next round of funding because that's how capitalism works and you know some other bank uh that didn't ask to talk to youtube uh about their numbers they were quoting an elderly person of a bank where they're like yeah we're called ozzy man all the kids love us you should see these numbers they're buku y'all and they're like okay here's some money i mean the aussie fest thing like it has like your uh you know like carlos watson clearly knows like all the right people right and so like it had like he used to work at goldman
Starting point is 00:13:32 right and so they made their round of funding but then when the new york times reported last weekend then the last week aussie announced they were shutting down which is wild it's like a lot of people that work there and then uh now today uh on monday they're announced psych we're not shutting down we're back baby the comeback story of of a lifetime you know he said straight up this this is our lazarus moment did he really yeah bro you just announced you were shutting down last week. No, you're not. Man, no, you're dead dead. No, but OK. And a lot of it, I think you can tell was it the way the statement was worded. It felt like they didn't want to. They'd rather have a narrative be that it like just crashed and burned on its own rather than this expose being like the death blow.
Starting point is 00:14:24 Right, right, right, right. So they'll grift a few more dollars, I'm sure. Yeah, yeah. burned on its own rather than this expose being like the death blow to the company right right right right so um they'll grift a few more dollars i'm sure yeah yeah all right let's take a quick break we'll be right back it was december 2019 when the story blew up in green bay wisconsin former packer star kabir bajaabiamila caught up in a bizarre situation. KGB explaining what he believes led to the arrest of his friends at a children's Christmas play. A family man, former NFL player, devout Christian, now cut off from his family and connected to a strange arrest. I am going to share my journey of how I went from Christianity to now a Hebrew Israelite. I got swept up in Kabir's journey, but this was only the beginning. In a story about faith
Starting point is 00:15:13 and football, the search for meaning away from the gridiron and the consequences for everyone involved. You mix homesteading with guns and church and a little bit of the spice of conspiracy theories that we liked. Voila! You got straight away. I felt like I was living in North Korea, but worse, if that's possible. Listen to Spiraled on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. This summer, the nation watched as the Republican nominee for president was the target of two assassination attempts, separated by two months.
Starting point is 00:15:50 These events were mirrored nearly 50 years ago when President Gerald Ford faced two attempts on his life in less than three weeks. President Gerald R. Ford came stunningly close to being the victim of an assassin today. And these are the only two times we know of that a woman has tried to assassinate a U.S. president. One was the protege of infamous cult leader Charles Manson. I always felt like Lynette was kind of his right-hand woman. The other, a middle-aged housewife working undercover for the FBI in a violent revolutionary underground. Identified by police as Sarah Jean Moore. The story of one strange and violent summer. This is Rip Current.
Starting point is 00:16:28 Available now with new episodes every Thursday. Listen on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Daphne Caruana Galizia was a Maltese investigative journalist who on October 16th 2017 was murdered. There are crooks everywhere you look now. The situation is desperate. My name is Manuel Delia. I am one of the hosts of Crooks Everywhere, a podcast that unhurts the plot to murder a one-woman Wikileaks. Daphne exposed the culture of crime and corruption that were turning her beloved country into a mafia state. And she paid the ultimate price.
Starting point is 00:17:12 Listen to Crooks Everywhere starting September 25th on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. I've been thinking about you. I want you back in my life. It's too late for that. I have a proposal for you.
Starting point is 00:17:35 Come up here and document my project. All you need to do is record everything like you always do. One session. 24 hours. BPM 110. 120. She's terrified. Should we wake her up?
Starting point is 00:17:49 Absolutely not. What was that? You didn't figure it out? I think I need to hear you say it. That was live audio of a woman's nightmare. This machine is approved and everything? You're allowed to be doing this? We passed the review board a year ago.
Starting point is 00:18:06 We're not hurting people. There's nothing dangerous about what you're doing. They're just dreams. Dream Sequence is a new horror thriller from Blumhouse Television, iHeartRadio, and Realm. Listen to Dream Sequence on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts and we're back and iotsy uh we had talked last week about the tv and film production
Starting point is 00:18:39 you know international alliance of theatrical stage. But they're basically the people who do like everything on a film set. Yeah. And they voted to authorize the first nationwide industry strike in their 128 year history. And the solidarity was pretty fucking awesome. 98.68% voted yes. And voter turnout among eligible members was nearly 90%. So that's power. 98.6. What is that? Like leftover TV execs who are like still up on their IATSE
Starting point is 00:19:14 dues or something? Or they're like, Hey, I'll vote no. Yeah. Are you still current with IATSE? Yeah. You should, you should, you should be a no vote in there. But yeah, I mean, this definitely gives them very, a lot of leverage now in trying to sort out a new contract because now they're going into this with the studios being like so you already know uh you can find out if you'd like or right come to the table and have a good faith negotiation because we're just asking for things like you know uh more reasonable hours and time off and pay. Just the bare minimum.
Starting point is 00:19:48 Yeah. I had joked last week that the production of the next season of Stranger Things will take place in a black box theater. But one of our listeners pointed out, I actually know because the IOTC also includes people who run the camera and stage. Yeah, everything. Yeah. Animation. They run everything. Yeah. the ioc also includes like theater who run the camera and stage and yeah everything yeah animation everything yeah animation is there they'll be able to to carry on yeah this is really going to be a really significant uh turning point in the entertainment industry so i i don't know like you you wonder if the the studios and networks blink or if they double down
Starting point is 00:20:26 because they think that they can grind out people, I'm like, no, we'll get them to fucking lower their demands because we'll hold their livelihood over their heads. But I honestly hope that, you know, the winds of change blow in IATSE's favor so they can, you know, actually start creating some equity for the crew because honestly the when you watch some shit it's not just uh you know matthew perry and uh these other
Starting point is 00:20:54 people in front of the camera and that's the whole show that the crew makes fucking every single thing happen like even driving the actors stinking asses to set and things like that there's all kinds of you know uh the levels of involvement for crew is just it's it's integral and i really hope that this leverage uh is able to get them a win yeah um blurred lines is trending because uh emily rochkowski or i i don't know is radikowski radikowski uh it has a book coming out uh which she describes being uh sexually assaulted by robin thick on the set of the blurred lines video which already was a video that aged like as poorly as any piece of culture like i feel like in our lifetime um yeah and yeah apparently behind the scenes it was nightmare he
Starting point is 00:21:46 like groped her on the set and the uh the whole production the whole like team was women except for like robin thick and pharrell and uh you know the the other the male singers everyone on the set was women and they shut down the production right away but oh wow he roped her? yeah that's what the director said that's not the impression you get from her
Starting point is 00:22:18 description but Robin Thicke was drunk which seems to be the what he's struggling with yeah and also awesome man that fucking song man too like they tried to act like they didn't just straight up rip off marvin gaye too i was like come on pharrell you're better than this yeah um people who listen to music are like that's just okay sure maybe that isn't gotta give it up by marvin gaye finally andrew wiggins has gotten the covid vaccine this whole thing is like he started off just being like hey man i'm not
Starting point is 00:22:51 knocking anybody who what does he say to each his own really this is a quote from him this is like back when he was saying with his chest out he's not getting it quote right now i'm not getting it but it's no knock on anyone else that's getting it. I make my own decisions, but right now I decided not to get it. Hmm. Then when you find out, okay, so you won't be able to play in home games. So that's about half your salary.
Starting point is 00:23:12 How's that? How do you like that? Uh, and then, then it just was just, I think just Steve Kerr basically is the one who announced it saying like, Andrew, this is from him,
Starting point is 00:23:21 quote, Andrew got vaccinated. He just told me today that he was fine with us acknowledging it and that this will be the end of it. There you go. I mean, that's, I'm sure there were other players on his team who were like, you know, pointing out that this was a distraction and they just want to get down to it.
Starting point is 00:23:39 But the standard stance of NBA players has been been like not that there's anything wrong with not getting it but we got it to like comply with the rules which yeah everyone's doing that they're handling their homies with kid gloves yeah you should be like i don't know what the fuck these people are on right they're trying to fuck my bag up too no right no no no no no this is a shot this is not gonna turn give you fucking hedgehog face or whatever the fuck right the uh reaction du jour is on the internet um kairi though tick tock tick tock don't know um because that's they're saying they did the math that's 380 000 per home game he's missing out on but yeah in uh on the route who's writing jay connor was writing just about but it's a
Starting point is 00:24:32 little bit different you know what i mean because uh oh he knows in the comment section on the route someone was just saying like kairi's a true believer though and he has a lot more money than andrew wiggins and like what did someone say in the comments? They're like, yo, he'd rather leave the game and walk off the edge of the flat earth than be told what to do. His response to the flat earth stuff was he eventually was like, oh, I didn't realize how big a deal it was going to be to people. Like, I recognize now that the earth is not flat. So maybe, maybe he'll come around on this. I just. Oh, I didn't know this is a big deal.
Starting point is 00:25:06 700,000 people died in this country. Right. Huh? Yeah. Shout out to Andrew Wiggins. Yes. I guess, uh,
Starting point is 00:25:15 that is going to do it for us. Uh, on this Monday afternoon, we are back tomorrow with a whole ass episode of the show. Until then, be kind to each other. Be kind to yourselves. Get the vaccine. Don't do nothing about white supremacy. And we will talk to you all tomorrow.
Starting point is 00:25:32 Bye. Bye. Bye.
